Abstract: The Brazilian group "Som Imaginário" emerged in 1969 with the purpose of accompanying the musician Milton Nascimento in his tour of 1970. The group gathered different musicians from differents music backgrounds and influences, and created a musical work full of hybridism as a result of the specific social, political and cultural context. Through the musical analysis of their three albuns, Som Imaginário (1970), Som Imaginário (1971), this study tried to identify many musical aspects such as form, genres and styles present in the sonority of the group, instrumentation used, harmony and lyrics, in order to relate these forms of musical expression with the cultural and political context of Brazil in that period, the transition between the 60's and 70's. By developing the narrative trajectory of the group, we tried to relate it to the growing phonographic industry in Brazil and associate elements of the musical production of the group with behavioral traits and ways of thinking related to the counterculture and to the term of military dictatorship in it most repressive stage

Design Analysis of the VCU Mainstage production process for The Nerd The comedic farce, The Nerd, written by Larry Shue and directed by Drew Fracher here at VCU, is the production I intend to analyze in terms of the scenic design process. From the initial conception of ideas, to their development through collaboration, to completion of construction, and ultimately, opening night, I plan to breakout my process step by step. I'd like to communicate the transformation of a literary play into the three-dimensional world in my mind.I. Introduction A. Overall description of process as it applies to this particular interaction with director and designers B. Each person involved in process and their specific roleII. Body A. Process breakdown B. Each insinuated step defined in a more concrete manner 1. play analysis by scenic designer 2. initial meeting with director to understand his/her interpretation and conceptual plans for play 3. research begins with previous steps in mind begins the collaborative effort 4. research presentation meeting with director 5. initial design ideas developed with input from director and interpreted into a floor plan or three-dimensional representation of the set 6. feedback from director 7. redesign or adjustments based on director's comments as well as functional and aesthetic developments 8. the build of the final design begins with the knowledge that contingencies remain that will create hopefully only small adjustments C. Although this breakdown may be somewhat matter of fact, the intricacies of the process I went through in designing the set for The Nerd will hopefully flush out the details into a more authentic realityIII. Résumé :
My practice-led research in Creative Writing consists of composing a novel closely focalised through three members of a dual-heritage family in Suffolk in 2004 after the teenage daughter is diagnosed with leukaemia. ‘Seventeen: Ethics and Aesthetics’ explores the question: what are the tensions between truth, kindness and the form and poetics of the novel? My critical reflection considers techniques used to convince the reader, and my attempts to represent unconscious psychic processes of the novel’s protagonists in relation to trauma fiction. The aim of the research programme has been to discover the appropriate form for a novel in which characters are paramount. My research methodology has consisted of revising repeated drafts in order to imagine and articulate the points of view of the novel’s protagonists: Rosie, a mixed-race teenager who has a vivid sense of the ridiculous, who wants to separate herself from her family and mix with her friends; Jay, her White mother, who works in anti-racist education and has ambitions as a photographer, together with a tendency to embrace New Age ideas; and Mel, Rosie’s stepfather, who runs an independent cinema, who never intended to be anyone’s father but finds himself caught up in loving Rosie. The novel is about the language and voices used, and about how the relationships between the characters change as a result of Rosie’s illness and impending death. Writing a commentary has informed the discipline of editing and revision. My completed critical reflection recounts decisions made on ethical or aesthetic grounds, while attempting to relate the research to cultural preoccupations in the study and composition of novels. The originality of this contribution to knowledge consists of fiction that focalises three original characters. A claim to originality may also be made in relation to my work on metaphor, metonymy and the unconscious.

Résumé :
The Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church operates one of the largest private educational systems in the United States. However, throughout the past ten years, there has been a steady decrease in the enrollment of Seventh-Day Adventist schools, although church membership has increased. Previous research has shown that SDA ministers have considerable influence, and have proved particularly influential in decisions regarding SDA schools. Since the educational values of SDA schools are conveyed to the church members by their ministers, it is important for Church leaders to have a knowledge of the values held by their ministers. The primary purpose of this study was to identify the perceptions of the SDA Church ministers concerning the values, effectiveness, fiscal status, and future structure of the SDA schools.

Résumé :
In this thesis I read a selection of novels by the Scottish writer Muriel Spark as participating in a broader ‘spatialization' of fictional and aesthetic production consolidated during the 1970s, through which they refract the decade's socio-cultural change. My intention is to establish a richer historical and theoretical context than that in which Spark's fiction has traditionally been understood, such that its distinctiveness will both emerge from and in turn shed light upon this wider background. In particular, the stylized, economical spatiality of Spark's work in this period seems at odds with the most influential accounts of spatialization as either an attenuation of historicity or an expression of an unconscious and broadly realist ‘mapping' impulse (these being the poles of Fredric Jameson's diagnoses of the spatial turn). What I consider Spark's more reflexive ‘miniaturism' reaches towards a condensation of the historical referent, while bringing into focus the discrepancy between container and contained; the playful collision of spatial scales in these postmodern allegories grants them a fabulist and gendered dimension distinct from Jameson's more expansive and totalizing ‘cognitive mapping'. Beyond situating Spark within a pre-existing context, then, approaching these novels theoretically and historically opens up a different perspective on the ‘spatial form' of much postmodern fiction. More broadly, I argue that it is through this parallel formal evolution within the longer history of the novel, with its particular limits and potentials for fiction's ‘utopian imagination', that these texts critically mediate (and not merely reflect) a perceived ‘cultural closure' in the years after 1968 – a teleological spatial metaphor which recent histories of the seventies have begun to contest.

Résumé :
Language maintenance investigations have, for the most part, been limited to the study of the effect that socio-cultural factors have on language preservation. Unfortunately, language maintenance has been studied in tandem with language shift. Language shift has generated more interested from scholars than has language maintenance. This dissertation is an attempt to open up new ways to look at the study of language maintenance by presenting a theoretical framework whereby the domain of language use is the principal focus of study. I studied the domain of religion, subdivided into several dimensions. One dimension, that of ideology, is at the center of my study. The main objective of the dissertation was to identify ideological themes within the doctrinal body of the church selected for the study. Twenty-five such themes were identified and analyzed to determine the ways in which the themes influence language maintenance among the church members. The case study approach and the use of several ethnographic data collection methods were employed to assist us in having a better understanding of the phenomenon of language maintenance and to pave the way for future language maintenance studies.

Heiser, Marshall Stuart. « The Playful Frame of Mind : An Exploration of its Influence upon Creative Flow in a Post-War Popular Music-Making Context ». Thesis, Griffith University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/366950.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The aim of this thesis is to explore how adopting a playful approach to contemporary popular music making influences creative flow within that context. In order to achieve this aim three component factors derived from the intersection of the scholarly humour, creativity, and play literature––frame of mind, flow, and playfulness (PF)––have informed a single unifying theme I call the “playful frame of mind.” Contemporary popular music makers live in an era where an over-abundance of affordable technological aids (along with the distribution capabilities of the internet) have created a glut of creative possibilities, and along with it an ever-present risk of cognitive dissonance caused by their “noise.” Such technology brings creative options to all and sundry once reserved for a few rock star elite signed to multinational record companies. It is now possible for every part of the popular music-making process to be performed, or enhanced, within a software context. Nonetheless, popular musicians today still operate according to paradigms largely informed by epoch-changing, post-War recording artists such as Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and The Beach Boys. The technology used for doing so may have progressed, but the basic rules (and roles) of the game have remained the same.

Résumé :
This thesis is an inquiry into how a 'consulting approach' can be used by a church helping organisation in the Seventh-day Adventist Church system to assist local church congregations. This inquiry will focus specially on the service providers known as Conference Departments and how a consulting approach can improve the service they provide. The exploration of the methodology and relationship between department personnel and churches will inform this inquiry. Consultancy within the Australian Seventh-day Adventist church is in its infancy. For the majority of churches the concept of using an external consultant to assist them on an ongoing basis would be a radical thought. The Seventh-day Adventist church system has traditionally provided resources and training to church parishes via their Conference departments youths, Bible school, outreach, health, welfare etc. However, few of these departments have offered a true constructive service where diagnostic assessment and long term problem-solving occurs. This thesis aims to develop a methodology by which consultants can gain entrance into churches and offer ongoing assistance to them. The study attempts to establish a model and identifies the issues that relate to using such an approach.

Résumé :
The purpose of this study was to identify seventh grade students&rsquo
computational estimation strategies and factors associated with these strategies. A case study was conducted with five students. They were selected among 116 seventh grade students from a public elementary school in Aegean region. Two sessions of clinical interviews were carried out with each participant. In the first interview session, the Computational Estimation Test, which was consisted of 15 estimation questions, was administered to students with requesting explanations of solving procedure. In the second interview session, students answered to semi-structured questionnaire prepared by the researcher to understand their feelings and thoughts on estimation. The results of the study indicated that students used three kinds of computational estimation strategies, which were reformulation, translation, and compensation. Reformulation was the most used types of estimation and by all interviewees. It was divided into four sub-strategies, which were observed during the interviews, among them rule based rounding was the most preferred one. The most sophisticated strategy was compensation, which was used least frequently by the participants. The other kind of computational estimation strategy was translation, which means changing the operation for handling the questions more easily. Translation strategy was used students who performed well in number sense. Based on interviews and observations, there were some cognitive and affective factors, which were associated with the specified strategies. Number sense and mental computation were two sub categories of the cognitive factors. Besides these cognitive factors, confidence in ability to do mathematics, perception of mathematics, confidence in ability to do estimation, perception of estimation and tolerance for error, which were identified as affective factors, played important role for strategy selection and computational estimation. Good number sense may lead to use of multiple representations of numbers and use of translation strategies. Moreover, mental computation ability may enable students both to conduct reformulation and use compensation strategy easily. Interviewees who had both high confidence in ability to do mathematics and low confidence in ability to do estimation, preferred exact computation and more rule dependent estimation strategies, like rule based rounding. Low tolerance for error may influence students&rsquo
answers, in order to produce them in a narrow interval. Additionally, perception of estimation may lead students recognize estimation as useful and use of variety of computational estimation strategies. According to data analysis, feelings and thoughts about computational estimation may influence interviewees&rsquo
strategy usage, such as students, who had negative feelings on estimation and thoughts about mathematics wanted exactness, generally preferred exact computation process and did not use diverse computational estimation strategies. Students who had poor in number sense and mental computation could not conduct computational estimation strategies. Therefore, the research study may lead to better understanding of students&rsquo
perspectives on computational estimation. With understanding used strategies, and related factors are affecting computational estimation strategies, it might be produce effective instructional designs for teaching computational estimation.

Résumé :
Aristotle proclaimed in his Poetics that there were six elements to drama: spectacle, music, diction, thought, character, and plot. This paper will analyze the play Thom Pain (based on nothing) against these six elements. I will discuss the aspects of each element that are present in the show as well as the ideas and concepts my director, Tad Ingram, and I brought to the show. Through the rehearsal and performance process I discovered a seventh element; the element of fearlessness. In his Poetics, Aristotle does not fully address what the actor brings to the performance and this aspect is just as important as what the script and staging bring to the performance.

Texte intégral
Résumé :

Mahler's Seventh Symphony stands out as one of the most provocative symphonic statements of the early twentieth century. Mahler's musical past is summoned in particular way in this work, knitting a complex web of associations that provide multiple hermeneutic leads. Yet despite the work's stunning qualities and a positive reception at the time of its first performance in 1908, the Seventh has progressively acquired the status of "problem child" in the Mahlerian canon. One of the main factors in this process is precisely its highly intertextual character, since the Seventh has been often heard either as "existing in the shadow" of the Sixth Symphony, or as "too reminiscent" of Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.

By focusing on sketch materials previously considered as "discarded" - which are generally overlooked in sketch studies - my dissertation reveals unexpected connections between the Seventh and both the Sixth and Meistersinger. This shows that Mahler's compositional project was strongly grounded in a dialogue with works from the past, and that this referential aspect should be taken as an important key to interpreting the work.

My study sheds light on the complex genetic history of this work. First, it reveals that the composition of the Seventh was deeply entangled with that of the Sixth, since Mahler was already at work on the second, fourth and last movements of the Seventh in 1904 - while he was completing the outer movements of the Sixth.

Second, I argue that Mahler's open allusions to Meistersinger in the Finale are only the audible remainder of a deeper compositional interpretation of Wagner's music. In fact, Wagnerian references are more explicit in the sketches than in the final version, which suggests that Mahler, in the end, sought to occlude the audible "Wagnerizing" in the symphony.

My study proposes a reassessment of the least well known of Mahler's symphonies and shows how this specific work enriches our understanding of Mahler in a unique way. Finally, it invites us to explore the question of Mahler's reception of Wagner; and, by extension, of Mahler's view of his Jewish heritage, as well as of his relation to German culture.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Gustav Mahler's Seventh Symphony seems to belie traditional notions of symphonic unity in that it progresses from E minor in the first movement to C major in the Finale. The repertoire of eighteenth and nineteenth century composers such as Haydn, Beethoven, and Brahms indicates that tonal holism is a significant factor for the symphonic genre. In order to reconcile Mahler's adventurous key scheme, this dissertation explores a multidimensional harmonic model that expands upon other concepts like Robert Bailey's double-tonic complex and transformation theory. A multidimensional musical object is a nexus of several interconnected chords that occupy the same functional space (tonic, dominant, or subdominant) and can be integrated into a Schenkerian reading. Mahler's Seventh is governed by a three-dimensional tonic object that encompasses the major and minor versions of C, E, and A-flat and the augmented triad that is formed between them. The nature of this multidimensional harmony allows unusual formal procedures to unfold, most notably in the first movement's sonata form. To navigate this particular sonata design, I have incorporated my own analytical terminology, the identity narrative, to track the background harmonic events. The location of these events (identity schism, identity crisis, and identity reclamation) is critical to the entire structure of the Seventh.

Résumé :
Thesis advisor: Devin O. Pendas
This dissertation shifts our understanding of 1970s human rights activism from a minimalist politics of salvation to a maximalist commitment to kindred spirits. Scholars see the 1970s as the time when the internationalist dreams of the 1960s disappeared to be supplanted by the salvation of a few over the transformation of the root causes of society's ills. By contrast, this dissertation examines West German activism on behalf of Latin Americans chaffing under military rule in the 1970s as a campaign of international political solidarity by different means. Faced with an environment hostile to transnational solidarity at home and abroad, West Germans of varying political doctrines and Christian confessions, as well as exiles from Latin America, embraced a common language of human rights as they pursued their political agendas. Its neutralist and humanitarian overtones made "human rights" discourses appealing to activists with diverging political goals. This dissertation reinterprets human rights activism as a continuation of internationalist commitments at a time when the foundations for transnational solidarity eroded. Grassroots embrace of human rights occurred during a tense state of securitization provoked by left-wing terrorism in West Germany. With the West German state increasingly unwilling to stand up for human rights on the international stage, especially for leftist victims, or accept them as refugees, grassroots solidarity activists were compelled to embrace a discourse that the state would accept. The Chilean and Argentinean cases--the most prominent instances of state-perpetrated abuses in 1970s Latin America--prompted leftists, left liberals, trade unionists, and Christians to advocate for the admission of political refugees and the imposition of economic embargoes and sanctions. Chilean and Argentinean exiles advocated for political change in their countries, but were forced to utilize human rights rhetoric to escape the stigma accorded to left-wing politics. Conservatives embraced human rights argumentation against the military regime in Chile when the wave of repression reached their political partners of the Christian Democratic Party in Chile. Lacking similar partners in Argentina, West German Christian Democracy did not demonstrate interest in conditions there. The West German government responded to grassroots advocacy with a minimalist vision for human rights protection that emphasized private negotiations on behalf of select individuals, which was abhorrent to many grassroots activists. The embrace of human rights by grassroots activists occurred in a highly contested process of political defeats and realignments. It was not a turn to a new utopia. Drawing on research in state and civil society repositories in Europe and the Americas, as well as oral interviews, this dissertation offers a window into transnational political activism between West Germany and Latin America in the 1970s. It shows how activists from the left and the right, as well as government officials, arrived at different definitions of human rights and diverging strategies for protecting them

Résumé :
The aim of this paper is to present, analyse and explain the image of Millerites and Seventh-day Adventists in literature. Most of the authors studied are Americans, but for comparative purposes reference is also made to British and Australian writers. Millennialism and apocalypticism are pervasive themes in both American fiction and Adventist belief. An outline of these subjects is given by way of introduction to the thesis topic. Since Adventists are inexplicable without an understanding of the American culture in which they were nurtured, and by which they continue to be sustained, the literary works which mention them have been related to the historical context. Chapter I details the origin and development of both the Millerite movement and the Seventh-day Adventist Church from the 1840s to the late twentieth century. This provides the setting for and explanation of the religion. Chapter II deals with the "moral approach" which some writers have used in describing Adventists. Despite preaching imminent catastrophe as well as renewal and rebirth only through apocalypse, they have been seen as a virtuous people having moral integrity from which writers can draw important lessons. Chapter III describes the humorous, satirical approach to Adventists includinq recent postmodernist apocalyptic works which use irony as a comical method to depict the church and its followers. Adventists become figures of polarity and radica1 ambiguity. Chapter IV is a study of Adventists presented in literature as caricatures, stereotypes and parodies. Writers set out to debunk and ridicule. It is a convenient strategy for some authors who wish to avoid polemical discussion. Chapter V describes Black writers and Adventism. Over the past sixty years a number of African-American authors with a beckqround in Seventh-day Adventism have published their experience with this religious faith. All writers reject the religion and prefer to embrace the culture of their black heritage. The study silhouettes the difference and similarities among the various writers in the treatment of a single subject.

The central objective of this work is to critically discuss the production and reception of Brazilian popular music during the seventies. Opposite to what happened to bossa nova, tropicalism and the 80s rock movement, the reflections about this period of great importance in our music seem to be disperse and fragmented, not presenting the consistency of the analyses of the aforementioned movements. This consistency is not based on an homogeneous interpretation of the cases, on the contrary, the diversity of interpretations is what confers to them a privileged position at the Cultural Studies field in Brazil. The exact proposal of this dissertation is to join this disperse and fragmented theoretical-reflexive production about the 70s presenting one more voice, an outlook, a written body that somehow may intercede in the debates on Brazilian culture and its vitality at that moment. My proposal is to discuss questions that somehow affected the artists, audiences and critics of this decade, taking in consideration the specificity of a political context of authoritarism and violent restrictions of freedom of speech and opinion, whilst not accepting any form of determinist reading of this condition.

Résumé :
The main purpose of this study was to investigate sixth, seventh, and eight gradeTurkish, English, Mathematics, Science and Technology, and Social Studies teachers&rsquo
conceptions of assessment. It was also aimed at finding out the differences, if any, in teachers&rsquo
conceptions of assessment according to their teaching subject, years of teaching experience, in-service training, and the undergraduate institution they graduated from. There were 414 teachers included in the study. Data were gathered through the short version of Teacher Conceptions of Assessment Scale (TCoA-IIIA), which had 27 items. Exploratory Factor Analysis results revealed that there were four factors in the scale which were called Student Accountability, School Accountability, Improvement, and Irrelevance like in the original scale. Then, the correlation results revealed that Student Accountability, School Accountability and Improvement conceptions were significantly correlated with each other at moderate level. However, Irrelevance conception did not have a significant relationship with other conceptions. The findings of Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) indicated that teaching subject and in-service training did not make any significant difference in teachers&rsquo
conceptions of assessment. However, years of teaching experience and undergraduate institution teachers graduated did significant differences in teachers&rsquo
conceptions of assessment.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Using a multimethod approach, this study set out to examine the concept of faculty morale - what it is, what affects it, and how to improve it - in the setting of the four South Pacific tertiary institutions owned and run by the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church. Based on three research questions and three major expectations, the study, done between October 1997 and March 1998, was carried out in two stages representing the two models of research - quantitative and qualitative. The study confirmed the multi-faceted and complex nature of morale as well as the close relationship between this concept and that of job satisfaction. While faculty morale appeared better in some institutions than others, the data reported in this study indicate that faculty morale overall seemed to have suffered due to a variety of factors. Most notable among these was the perceived leadership style of senior administrators as manifested through a range of activities and attitudes comprising their willingness or otherwise to share power with the faculty, to follow a satisfactory process of consultation, to allow adequate academic freedom, to promote faculty participation and representation in institutional policy- and decision-making, and to communicate openly with academic staff. Faculty satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the above and other aspects of their senior administrators' leadership style, along with their satisfaction or dissatisfaction with other aspects of their work, were the principal factors linked to faculty morale. The surprising absence of a significant relationship between faculty morale and a religious-oriented commitment among SDA faculty members suggests that religious commitment and morale may, to a large extent, operate independently of each other. Although religious commitment was shown to be very solid among SDA faculty members, the study indicates that this type of commitment has its limits and may be unrelated to commitment to a particular institution. Implications of these findings were drawn out for administrators of the SDA Church in the South Pacific and the on-site administrators and faculty at each of the four institutions studied. The study also contributed to the theoretical understanding of the concept of morale and proposed areas for further research.

Bowdery, Francis T. « Music for player piano : a study of seventeen selected examples ». Thesis, Loughborough University, 1995. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/6989.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
From virtually the beginning of the twentieth century, musicians were sufficiently intrigued by the possibilities of the player piano to compose and specially arrange music for it. The aesthetic of 'automatic music' reaches back at least as far as JS Bach and forward to Conlon Nancarrow and Georgy Ligeti, as well as in developments in electronic popular and art music. This thesis makes a case study of seventeen compositions, arrangements and fragments from the period of the instrument's greatest commercial success, 1900-1927, including music by Bax, Busoni, Casella, Hans Haass, Hindemith and Stravinsky, and seeks to relate them to the broader range both of player piano compositions and music for other automatic musical instruments, as well as the stylistic developments of the time. A number of items are in score for the first time, and an attempt at a complete listing of the repertory for player piano is included.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In this work of historical fiction, a twelve-year-old girl called Emmetje journeys from the streets of Constantinople to the decks of a smuggling boat and on to the back streets and canals of 17t h century Amsterdam. In her pocket she carries the bulb of a unique blue tulip, and in her hand is a strange treasure map that uncovers the heart of a nation's strange obsession. Emmetje's mother had drawn tulips. Hovering beside the elegant petals she drew butterflies, and on their wings she drew her map. Compelled by curiosity and an adventurous spirit, Emme sets out to discover where her mother's map might lead. Her journey is shared by her three-legged tabby cat and a cabin boy called Sander. Emmetje's journey inevitably becomes one of self-discovery where fathers, mothers and horticulture all play their part. The blue tulip bulb is the silent hero, but the not so silent metaphor for Emmetje's identity. Precious, protected, rich with potential and waiting to bloom.
