Résumé :
Purpose. One-piece titanium implants are not routinely used for reconstruction after tooth loss. Several limitations seemed to be apparent although the concept provides a straightforward approach for different clinical situations. A clinical documentation of five prosthetic restorations with one-piece titanium implants serving as a relevant treatment option in dental surgery is pursued. We demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of one-piece titanium implants for fixed dental prosthesis. Detailed descriptions of the technical features and the surgical approach by means of clinical cases are given. The prosthetic workflow when working with one-piece titanium implants is depicted in detail as well as examples for implant-supported tooth replacement in the posterior region and the esthetic zone. Conditions of applications regarding different timing of implant placement using the system and its limitations are discussed. Results. Clinical cases with a follow-up period of up to 10 years are presented to prove the long-term success of one-piece titanium implants in terms of bone and soft-tissue stability respecting the biological criteria for periodontal health. Conclusions. One-piece titanium implants represent a reliable treatment method for single-tooth replacements. Clinical success with long-time bone stability around the implantation site can be achieved. Taken into account the requirements for periodontal tissue stability, uneventful healing without extensive tissue loss is demonstrated by means of clinical cases presenting patients with periodontitis.

In this research, the writer chose the object of an advertisement for a phenomenal comic series, namely One Piece. The results of the study show that from the denotative side tells about the life of urban residents in the city center, from the connotative side it equality and from the mythical side it conveys the influence of the One Piece story on women's enthusiasm in realizing dreams. The results of the study also found 5 Roland Barthes narrative codes, including: hermeneutic code used in the dialogue about people who’ve never read One Piece mean they haven’t truly live. Proairetic code is used influence reading One Piece. Semantic code is in the description of the main character's work. Symbolic code can be seen in the antithesis of the main character's character, namely the nature of his partner. The cultural code is found in the depiction of the main character and his partner who live together even though they are not married.

Résumé :
Several histologic studies regarding peri-implant soft tissues and biological width around dental implants have been done in animals. However, these findings in human peri-implant soft tissues are very scarce. Therefore, the aim of this case series was to compare the biological width around unloaded one- and two-piece implants retrieved from human jaws. Eight partially edentulous patients received 2 test implants in the posterior mandible: one-piece (solid implants that comprise implant and abutment in one piece) and two-piece (external hexagon with a healing abutment) implants. After 4 months of healing, the implants and surrounding tissue were removed for histologic analysis. The retrieved implants showed healthy peri-implant bone and exhibited early stages of maturation. Marginal bone loss, gaps, and fibrous tissue were not present around retrieved specimens. The biologic width dimension ranged between 2.55 ± 0.16 and 3.26 ± 0.15 to one- and two-piece implants, respectively (P<0.05). This difference was influenced by the connective tissue attachment, while sulcus depth and epithelial junction presented the same dimension for both groups (P>0.05). Within the limits of this study, it could be shown that two-piece implants resulted in the thickening of the connective tissue attachment, resulting in the increase of the biological width, when compared to one-piece implants.

We present a statistical analysis of music scores from different composers using detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA). We find different fluctuation profiles that correspond to distinct autocorrelation structures of the musical pieces. Further, we reveal evidence for the presence of nonlinear autocorrelations by estimating the DFA of the magnitude series, a result validated by a corresponding study of appropriate surrogate data. The amount and the character of nonlinear correlations vary from one composer to another. Finally, we performed a simple experiment in order to evaluate the pleasantness of the musical surrogate pieces in comparison with the original music and find that nonlinear correlations could play an important role in the aesthetic perception of a musical piece.

Résumé :
This study conducts an in-depth analysis of the representation of justice systems and the duality of law enforcement as depicted in the popular manga and anime series "One Piece" by Eiichiro Oda. Employing a literature review with Siyasah Syar'iyah theory as the theoretical framework, this research explores how concepts within Siyasah Syar'iyah can be applied to understand the complex justice system presented in this fictional world. The research is divided into two main sections: firstly, examining the representation of the justice system in "One Piece," where law is applied across various characters and situations, highlighting conflicts and compromises between personal morality and the prevailing law. Secondly, the study integrates the perspective of Siyasah Syar'iyah to analyze how these principles are applicable in the context of law and justice within the narrative. The findings indicate that, although "One Piece" is a work of fiction, its representation of the justice system and the duality of law enforcement reflects relevant justice issues in actual society. The Navy and the World Government in "One Piece" often implement actions that are absolute and monolithic, demonstrating a tendency to disregard fair legal processes and human rights. This practice conflicts with the principles of Siyasah Syar'iyah, which emphasize justice, transparency, and accountability. The study also highlights how power and social status can influence the interpretation and application of justice, as represented by Tenryuubito and Yonko, showing disparities in social and legal justice. Therefore, "One Piece" not only entertains but also provides a platform for critical discussions on justice and law enforcement, enabling reflection on real-world justice practices. This research adds a new dimension to the study of law and justice by integrating the principles of Siyasah Syar'iyah. It enriches the literature on interdisciplinary analysis between law, pop culture, and Islamic studies.

AIM: To evaluate the visual and refractive outcomes in cases after sutured scleral fixation of existing subluxated or dislocated acrylic one-piece intraocular lenses (IOLs). METHODS: This study retrospectively enrolled a consecutive series of patients who underwent a surgery of sutured existing subluxated or dislocated IOLs from October 2018 to June 2020. All patients underwent comprehensive preoperative and postoperative ophthalmologic examination, and data were collected including age, sex, surgical indications, best-corrected visual acuity, refractive error, intraocular pressure. Presence of intraoperative and postoperative surgical complications was documented. RESULTS: A total of 20 consecutive cases were enrolled for analysis with mean final follow-up period 9.8±5.3mo. Visual acuity improved from a mean of 0.35 (0.46±0.32 logMAR) preoperatively to 0.61 (0.21±0.18 logMAR) at the 3-month follow-up (P=0.002). The mean amount of preoperative keratometric astigmatism and total postoperative refractive astigmatism was -1.24±0.80 diopters (D) and -1.42±0.97 D, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between preoperative and postoperative astigmatism (P=0.156). The mean IOL-induced astigmatism was -0.23±0.53 D. The mean spherical equivalent at the 3-month follow-up was -0.1±0.94 D. No major complications were noted during the follow-up period. CONCLUSION: Surgical techniques using sutured scleral fixation of existing subluxated or dislocated acrylic one-piece IOLs result in favorable visual and refractive outcomes without major complications.

AbstractThis piece raises critical questions regarding the sense of belonging in 2nd-generation Canadians, or those born in Canada to one or more immigrant parents. I am a multidisciplinary artist and a storyteller of Jamaican heritage, often describing myself as a wanderer due to not truly feeling at home anywhere. My interests surrounding cultural identity stem from my discontent with not feeling Jamaican enough, while simultaneously feeling misunderstood as a culturally marginalized Canadian. My experiences with isolation and my yearning to belong were the inspiration for this story.

AbstractThis manuscript narrates a pedagogic experience in a Furniture Design course at the American University in the Emirates (AUE). Senior students enrolled in the Interior Design Program tackled a studio project which was about designing a piece of furniture inspired by a pavilion of their choice pertaining to Dubai World Expo 2020. The direct learning outcomes were assessed through technical drawings and three-dimensional printed physical models scaled one tenth proceeded by real scale prototypes of the chairs. The indirect outcomes are considering these material objects, the furniture items, as tools of memory, holding symbolic and cultural connotations. The design process would allow a space of reflection on contemporary practices and rethink prototypes as tools for analysis and research. Beyond functionality and aesthetics, objects become means of communicating personal findings, translating urban, architectural, cultural, and social attributes. This research will demonstrate through combined research strategies how products of the real and the imaginary give material form to memory.

Résumé :
AbstractThe primary objective of the narrative, which spans the 1960s and 1990s, is to verify the contribution of industrial design – through the objects it uses (telephone sets but also fittings) and in their implications of function, form and production [1] – as a lever both in the private market (which Italtel Telematica used) but also considering how, beyond the object, the investment was part of a broader strategy of expansion of the telecommunications sector in Italy. The telephone, an element of connection par excellence that accompanied the physical and immaterial transition from mechanical to electronic and digital technology, in its parallel evolution with the development of communications technology, turns out to be only a piece, albeit an emblematic one, an instrument of cultural and social representation that satisfies the functional, symbolic and communicative dictates of every era.The essay therefore proposes a reinterpretation of the encounter between a fundamental player in Italy, Italtel – formerly Sit-Siemens (IRI) – with one of the nascent forces of the 1950s, industrial design, the new discipline that, in the years of the economic boom, promised through ‘good industrial product design’ the achievement of market success. The role of design as a catalyst for innovation and as one of the main drivers of Italian innovation in the Sit-Siemen and Italtel entrepreneurial venture is thus argued.

The reactivation of Rudi Fuchs’ 1983 exhibition ‘Summer Display’ took place in 2009 as part of the collection series, ‘Play van Abbe part 1: The Game and the Players’, and was entitled ‘Repetition: Summer Display 1983’. The reconstruction questioned the codes and systems used within (but also consciously and unconsciously outside) the museum and raised several questions, including: what story did the original composers want to tell, and how can this piece of history be understood today? Is the new presentation a separate exhibition entirely or a copy of the ‘original’ one? What is then the difference between the idea of copy, repetition, and reenactment? And what is the role of the museum’s archive in the process of restaging? What can curatorial institutional archives tell us about the museum itself?

AbstractIn this chapter, I explore how I would approach the hypothetical exercise of writing a chapter for a book on ‘Law and the Body’. As a socio-legal scholar whose work is mostly on issues of law and medicine, the theme of the book would echo quite closely much of the focus of my work. Yet, I have not to date engaged as explicitly with the body as such a specific invitation would require. As a result, the exercise would be one of thinking through a new lens about my ongoing research, and empirical data, and engaging both familiar and less familiar questions and resources. In this piece, I try to chart what the process and its outcome may look like, proposing that my focus would be on a particular series of empirical questions that have emerged as I researched the regulation of traditional healing in Senegal.

Résumé :
The Wall Street Crash of October 1929 caused havoc in the industry as a whole. Moorcroft’s trading figures declined progressively, and he was obliged, for the first time, to sell pieces at reduced prices. It is clear from his accounts, however, that losses were attributable not simply to reduced sales, but also to an increase in unpaid invoices, and Moorcroft’s continued reluctance to put his staff on part time. Significantly, even as he began to struggle commercially, his reputation as a designer continued to grow. He responded defiantly to the bleak economic climate with a series of new designs which celebrated the beauty and vitality of the natural world: Landscape, Leaf and Berry, and Fish. His exhibits at British Industries Fairs were reviewed as if they were artworks in a gallery rather than samples on a trade stand, and whose quality was never compromised by their affordability; as one critic noted, even the most modest object was, for its owner, a ‘collector’s piece’. This was the epitome of ‘everyday art’. Moorcroft’s art is examined, too, in the context of continued discussion about the improvement of industrial design. As leading manufacturers turned either to fine artists, or to Art School trained designers, Moorcroft’s commitment to his own designs became increasingly significant. Even more outspoken in his criticism of industrial production than Leach had been in 1928, he explicitly positioned himself as a craft potter, not least in an article written in 1930 on the occasion of the bicentenary of Josiah Wedgwood’s birth. He wrote as one who has the outreach of a manufacturer, but the creative principles of an artist. Letters written to his daughter during these years provide a unique insight into his aesthetic outlook and his ambition to combat the bleakness of the times with ceramic objects, both functional and decorative, characterised by their integrity of design and humanity of craft production. And this is how his work was received. One critic identified a quality of ‘soulfulness’ in his pottery, and private correspondence from individual owners attests to its inspirational effect.

AbstractA teenage girl’s journey of leaving her home in Iran to move to Canada with her family is shaped around a secret box of memories that needs to accompany the main character to her new home in Canada. The story focuses on themes of belonging, “home”, identity; and experiences of Iranian teenage women told through a simple tale of teenagehood in Iran. The teenage girl experiences an identity crisis that starts with the migration journey itself and as the family arrives in the Canadian airport for the very first time, new insights into their immigrant realities unfold. The story is called Things Lost, Things Not Lost, And the Ones That Were Found on The Way. It is a simple story of a family’s journey to Canada, and it begins when the family is leaving Tehran, ending when they arrive at Toronto’s Pearson International airport. Told in the voice of the family’s teenage daughter, it is a mix of imagination and experiences I personally have lived through. What I have tried to capture in this playful snapshot of a family’s journey are the feelings and emotions they experience before immigrating to a new country. These feelings of letting go are intertwined with meaningful pieces of identity and the journey is full of contradictions that mimic the paradoxes and the challenges immigrant families experience as they try to adapt to their new life, including changes in family dynamics and gender relations.

Résumé :
In recent years, Japanese anime and video games have been highly regarded as a part of Cool Japan content. Among them, a video game series Pokémon is standing out as globally famous content. The Pokémon series is a role-playing game developed by Game Freak Inc. and sold by The Pokémon Company. It has been popular since the release of Pokémon Red/Green in 1997, with many titles being released up to the latest. Throughout its long history, one of the important factors that has kept Pokémon popular is music. In a previous study, the character design of monsters was investigated, but there was no investigation on the music used in the Pokémon series. Pokémon includes various situations and scenes, such as battles with trainers and monsters, transfer on bicycles, walking around the towns, and visiting the hideouts of evil organizations, and so on. In the Pokémon series, corresponding musical piece is prepared for each situation and scene. The pieces are composed based on the theory and experience of musicians and it is not clarified whether they are matched to the situations or scenes. In the present study, a perceptual experiment was conducted to research the impressions of musical pieces in the Pokémon series using semantic differential method, and investigated whether the musical pieces are matched to the situations and scenes. For the experiment, 151 musical pieces used in the Pokémon series were prepared as sound stimuli. The stimuli were presented through headphones STAX SR-407 at the level of LAeq=55.9-70.4. Eighteen students of Kanazawa Institute of Technology participated as listeners. The participants listened to a stimulus and were requested to rate their impressions for the piece using 25 bipolar seven-step scales. The rated scores were averaged for each scale and used for factor analysis. The results of the factor analysis showed that the three-factor solution accounted for 86.9% of the data variance. These factors were labeled pleasantness, powerfulness and speed, respectively. The tonality of the musical piece determined the pleasantness, i.e. a piece with a major key was perceived as pleasant and a minor key was felt as unpleasant. A piece with a wide range of loudness change sounded powerful and a piece with a narrow range of loudness change sounded powerless. Contemporary game music is produced with various real sound sources and this allows realizing a wide range of loudness change. The rhythm and tempo of the musical piece determined speed. A piece with a fast rhythm and tempo sounded rapid and vice versa. Moreover, the results showed that the musical pieces were suitably composed and matched to the situations and scenes, in the Pokémon series. For example, the pieces used in the battle situations sounded powerful and rapid, the pieces used in the scene of towns sounded powerless, pleasant and slow, and so on. The results of the present study suggest how to compose for a situation or scene suitably, controlling the tonality, dynamic range of the loudness, rhythm and tempo.

A prototypical three-pulley serpentine belt drive with belt bending stiffness is extended to include a one-way clutch in order to understand the nonlinear dynamics of the system with the one-way clutch performance. The clutch is modeled based on the relative velocity of the driven pulley and its accessory. The clutch locks (engages) the pulley and accessory for zero relative velocity and produces a positive inner clutch torque. Zero clutch torque initiates clutch disengagement, allowing unequal velocities of the two components. This model leads to a piece-wise linear system. The transition matrix is used to evaluate the system response in discrete time series for the two linear configurations, saving significant computation time. The system dynamics including response and dynamic tension drop are examined for varying excitation frequency, inertia ratio of the pulley and accessory, and external load. The investigation of vibration reduction due to the single-direction power transmission of the clutch provides design guidelines in practice.

Résumé :
Abstract Case hardening by carburizing is the most common heat treatment in mass production, which relies on atmosphere, or vacuum carburizing followed by oil or gas quenching and finally by tempering. Parts being heat-treated undergo the process in a configuration of a batch consists of hundreds or even thousands pieces. Under these circumstances, individual parts can’t help but be exposed to different process parameters in terms of temperature, atmosphere and quenching depends on their position within the batch. Parts near the outer portion of the load see a more rapid rise in temperature, are first exposed to the carburizing atmosphere and are more effectively quenched than parts located in the center of the batch. This can lead to significant variation from part to part and load to load; the resultant effective case depth deviation can be as high as 50%. Similarly, during quenching from hardening temperature distortion becomes highly unpredictable and unrepeatable. Modern industry demands greater precision and repeatability of results beyond those achievable by so-called traditional batch or continuous technologies and their associated equipment. Elimination of batches and focus on individual parts is the only true way to advance the industry. The article will introduce the first operational system for truly single-piece flow method for case hardening by low-pressure carburizing and hardening by high-pressure gas quench. The system treats each part individually and as such provides virtually identical process parameters, which results in extremely accurate and repeatable results. Quenching one part at a time in a specially design chamber, achieves more precise control and significantly reduces distortion so as to all make it possible to avoid post heat treatment hard machining operations. This single-piece flow heat treatment method is easily adapted into manufacturing and can be directly integrated into in-line manufacturing operations, working directly with machining centers. Materials handling and logistical issues are eliminated thus saving time and reducing unit cost. The results achieved on series of automotive gears will be reported and demonstrate incredible accuracy and repeatability, while significantly reducing distortion. Productivity and process costs prove the system to be highly competitive with other technologies. These proven advantages and savings.

Résumé :
Abstract Dimensions of nonstationary time series is studied. The nonstationarity is considered to be due to multiple episode where an episode is a piece of stationary time series. The dimension estimation algorithms in the literature can be naturally extended to study multi-episode time series by restricting the calculation on data segment of pre-determined length. Inevitably, more than one episode will be included in the segment. This work focuses on finding when such dimension estimate has a local interpretation as the dimension of the episode. It was found that the local interpretation is valid if there is a large enough difference in the autocorrelation time of the episodes. This is termed EES. In practice, the average first passage time of the reconstructed “orbit” can be used to determine EES. Numerical evidence of these results are given and the application to the mechanical gearbox signal are shown.

Résumé :
The Lower Danube Museum is an important resource for cultural tourism in the lower Danube area, especially through its archeological collections. Gumelniţa culture is one of the most spectacular Chalcolithic cultures in the Balkans. During their existence on nowadays Romanian territory, these communities made a series of clay pieces that suggest a human foot, a rare form of its anthropomorphic plastic. In this study, we will discuss a type of artefact found in Gumelniţa settlements from Muntenia (Wallachia), preserved in the archaeology collection of the Lower Danube Museum from Călăraşi and its importance in the development of cultural tourism in the area. In the scientific literature, this type of piece is known as ”boot last” stem or clay stem (clay foot). Compared to other categories of clay artefacts, this type of legs discussed in this paper is rather reduced in quantity, and they are found especially in Gumelniţa settlements form the south and the southeast of Muntenia. The pieces that make the subject of our study were discovered in the settlement Măgura Cuneşti, Călăraşi county, only one of them coming from the tell Sultana-Malu Roşu. As for the methodological approach, for a clearer analysis, we will consider the more or less known context of discovery, technical data, and last but not least regards on the technological form in connection with discussing possible interpretations of these objects.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This study uses a nonlinear multibody dynamics model of a railway vehicle with three-piece trucks to perform a parametric study on a wide range of parameters influencing the performance of the truck on tangent track. One of the major disadvantages of the three-piece truck is that its performance can be greatly influenced due to worn parts or contaminants on friction surfaces, such as the friction wedge. The influence of worn parts is modeled as increased gap between bodies, using dead-band springs. The influence of environmental contamination is modeled as change in coefficients of friction. Lateral accelerations, measured at the center of gravity of the leading axle of the leading truck (Axle 1) are used for the hunting performance of the vehicle. For the baseline case, an eigenvalue analysis of a linearized model is used to evaluate the effect of speed on damping ratio and lateral motion frequency. A comparison of the linear model and non-linear time series analysis show that the linear model is less conservative, in that it predicts that the onset of hunting occurs at higher speeds. The results indicate a direct relationship between various coefficients of friction and hunting velocity of the rail vehicle. Increasing the gap between the pedestal legs and bearing housing does not influence hunting velocity, but reduces lateral acceleration magnitudes during hunting. The weights of the carbody and cargo also has a direct relationships with hunting velocity, meaning that hunting occurs at lower speeds for unloaded car and at higher speeds for a loaded car.

Résumé :
The flow field of a 15 stage axial compressor is analyzed using a 3-D Navier-Stokes CFD tool. The compressor under investigation is a prototype engine, first compressor version before optimization of the Siemens V84.3A family. The paper describes steady state and transient flow simulations of the entire 15 stages compressor in one computation (not piece by piece). The simulation includes tip gaps, mass bleeds, hub leakage flows, and ranges from single passage to full 360 degrees analysis. The work is divided into two companion papers. The second paper, “CFD Analysis of a 15 Stage Axial Compressor Part II: Results” describes the application of the methods in Part I to the entire 15 stage compressor (Belamri et al, 2005). The flow in the compressor is modeled first with one blade passage per component (periodicity assumed, an interface pitch change model employed). Steady state and transient models are compared. In a second series of computations, all blade passages in 360 degrees are modeled, (no periodicity or pitch change assumptions required), for portions of the compressor. The various simulation approaches are compared to each other, and to experimental data. Good agreement between predictions and experimental results, both in the details of the flow field and the integral prediction of operating range of the compressor, were found.

Résumé :
The bending of complex curved sheet metals of ship hull has long been a challenge in shipbuilding yard on account of some inherent defects of the traditional forming processes such as the line heating. This paper presents a novel incremental bending process based on punching to obtain complex curved steel plates in order to take the place of those inefficient traditional forming processes of ship hull. The presented incremental bending process is carried out by a series of stepping punches, so it is also defined as incremental punching in this work. By means of this process, the blank plate that is fixed and held by a flexible supporting system can incrementally be bent to the target shape by a press tool with a planned tool trajectory one step after another. Meanwhile, in order to improve geometric accuracy of the formed work-piece, a 3D scanning feedback system is applied to measure the deformation of the work-piece during the forming process. Three dimensional shape of the formed work-piece can be imaged and rebuilt with a large amount of point cloud data by the 3D scanning feedback system. Then the difference between the rebuilt model of the formed work-piece and the target CAD-model can be acquired, which can be used for feedback control of the forming accuracy if necessary. To validate the presented forming process, an original incremental punching prototype was designed and manufactured, which is mainly composed of a 3-axis CNC machine, a flexible supporting system and a 3D scanning feedback system. A forming experiment of a gradual curvature steel plate was carried out using this prototype and is discussed in detail in this paper in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed incremental bending process of complex curved steel plate.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
One of the most dangerous phenomena associated with chainsaw use is kickback. This occurs when the upper quadrant of the chainsaw bar’s tip catches on the work-piece, accelerating the saw toward the user. Safety devices currently installed on chainsaws rely on the rotational acceleration of the saw to move a difficult-to-design mechanical linkage and activate a band brake. Even with a well-designed braking linkage, the saw must rotate through a large angle (approximately 45°) before actuating the brake. A more effective kickback detection and chain-braking system is needed—one that is capable of (i) early detection of the kickback event and (ii) rapid braking of the moving chain. This paper deals with a method of detecting such a kickback event. The approach taken in this work determines the key kinematic parameters associated with kickback using an electronics package of accelerometers and a gyroscope attached to a typical chainsaw. Testing consisted of (i) performing a series of normal cuts through wooden poles, and (ii) purposely initiating kickback via several common scenarios. Data analysis consisted of comparing magnitude, duration, and frequency of sensor output between normal cutting and kickback scenarios. After data filtering, a method of scaling factor variation was used to extract the optimum detection algorithm of a single gyroscope with appropriate signal conditioning, Kickback is detected within 30 milliseconds, before the saw loses contact with the work-piece. The gyroscope magnifies the signal corresponding to the kickback event while attenuating signals corresponding to normal use. This method presents the possibility of a significantly improved chainsaw kickback control system.

Résumé :
A reliable satellite-based black-sky albedo time series is a crucial part of detecting changes in the climate. This thesis studies the solutions to several uncertainties impairing the quality of the black-sky albedo time series. These solutions include creating a long dynamic aerosol optical depth time series for enhancing the removal of atmospheric effects, a method to fill missing data to improve spatial and temporal coverage, and creating a function to correctly model the diurnal variation of melting snow albedo. Mathematical methods are the center pieces of the solutions found in this thesis. Creating a melting snow albedo function and the construction of an aerosol optical depth time series lean on a linear regression approach, whereas the process to fill missing values is based on gradient boosting, a machine learning method that is in turn based on decision trees. These methods reflect the basic nature of these problems as well as the need to take into account the large amounts of satellite-based data and computational resources available.

Résumé :
The 1943 art exhibition at the Mountain View Officers’ Club (MVOC), Fort Huachuca, Arizona should be considered one of the most significant events in the intersection of American art, military history, and segregation. Organizers of the event, entitled Exhibition of the Work of 37 Negro Artists, anticipated it would boost soldiers’ morale because Fort Huachuca was a predominately Black duty station during WWII. This report provides a brief history of Black art in the early 20th century, biographies of the artists showcased, and provides information (where known) about repositories that have originals or reproductions of the art today. The following is recommended: the General Services Administration (GSA) investigate the ownership of the pieces described in this report and if they are found to have been created under one of the New Deal art programs to add them to their inventory, further investigation be performed on the provenance and ownership of Lew Davis’s The Negro in America’s Wars mural, for the rehabilitation of the MVOC that the consulting parties agree upon the scope of the reproduction of the art, and request archival full reproductions of the pieces of art found in the collection of the Howard University Gallery of Art.

Résumé :
A seminal piece in our understanding of how high-profle cases of police violence can affect communities, Desmond, Papachristos, and Kirk (2016), found that resident calls to the police via 911 significantly declined after the beating of Frank Jude. These effects were especially prevalent in primarily Black neighborhoods. In this study, we used an interrupted time series design to replicate the original results in a different city using a fatal incident of police violence. We also extended the methods of original study by further disaggregating the follow-up efects to include officer-initiated events, which capture more discretionary activity for patrol officers. Our results confirm the original findings, with resident calls to 911 declining in majority-Black neighborhoods after a deadly incident of police violence, signifying a decay in community trust and legitimacy. Importantly, we also fnd an immediate and striking decline in officer-initiated activity after the same incident in majority-Black neighborhoods. Conversely, White neighborhoods experienced a slight increase. This study reinforces and adds further context to a growing body of research that explains how incidents of police violence can affect the actions of community residents and the police, including how we conceptualize and measure the concept of “de-policing.”

Résumé :
Much has been made of the Global Safety Net that has been put into place since the Great Financial Crisis but the distributional effects of some of the Fed’s strategies are still shrouded in mystery. In supplying bailout funds at below-market terms to uninsured creditors of firms and governments that were economically insolvent, the Fed reinforced the implicit expectation that megabanks are free to take on high levels of risk and benefit from the upside while being protected from any serious downside. An important example of this is the role of currency swaps. By extending its “temporary” dollar swap lines with other central banks, including the European Central Bank, “until further notice” the Fed broadcasted its intention to act as the financial world’s “liquidity provider” of last resort. The “liquidity” support provided by the Fed to megabanks through cross-border lending in fact acted as subsidies, the costs of which were borne by ordinary US citizens. This is just one piece of an unacknowledged game plan of building global strategies of crisis prevention and crisis management based on misdirection and piles of bullsh*t.

Résumé :
According to future projections based on current demographic growth trends, Auckland’s population will reach two million in 2033. Since the city is already afflicted by a serious housing crisis, at the beginning of 2017 the newly elected Mayor Phil Goff set up a task force. Formed by representatives of various stakeholders, it was given the task of producing a report with strategic and tactical guidelines to mitigate the situation. Unitec researchers were invited to respond to the report, which came out at the end of 2017, in the form of three think pieces towards the Building Better Homes, Towns and Cities National Science Challenge. This paper is a new iteration of one of these think pieces, focused on collaborative living, and expands on the new role that designers should play in this field. Its ideological position is that the house cannot and should not be considered as a commodity on the free market; nor should focus solely be on bringing down prices by increasing the number of houses on offer. Over time, housing might evolve to being more about social (use) value than exchange value. Other models of the production and consumption of household goods are documented throughout the world as alternatives to mainstream market logic, using collective procurement mechanisms to cut construction and marketing costs with savings of up to 30%. These experiments, not limited to achieving financially sustainable outcomes, are linked to new social practices of collaboration between neighbours. The sharing of spaces and equipment to complement private housing units also leads to social and environmental sustainability.

Résumé :
Religious populism and radicalism are hardly new to Pakistan. Since its birth in 1947, the country has suffered through an ongoing identity crisis. Under turbulent political conditions, religion has served as a surrogate identity for Pakistan, masking the country’s evident plurality, and over the years has come to dominate politics. Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) is the latest face of religious extremism merged with populist politics. Nevertheless, its sporadic rise from a national movement defending Pakistan’s notorious blasphemy laws to a “pious” party is little understood. This paper draws on a collection of primary and secondary sources to piece together an account of the party’s evolution that sheds light on its appeal to “the people” and its marginalization and targeting of the “other.” The analysis reveals that the TLP has evolved from a proxy backed by the establishment against the mainstream parties to a full-fledged political force in its own right. Its ability to relate to voters via its pious narrative hinges on exploiting the emotional insecurities of the largely disenfranchised masses. With violence legitimized under the guise of religion, “the people” are afforded a new sense of empowerment. Moreover, the party’s rhetoric has given rise to a vigilante-style mob culture so much so that individuals inspired by this narrative have killed in plain sight without remorse. To make matters worse, the incumbent government of Imran Khan — itself a champion of Islamist rhetoric — has made repeated concessions and efforts to appease the TLP that have only emboldened the party. Today, the TLP poses serious challenges to Pakistan’s long-standing, if fragile, pluralistic social norms and risks tipping the country into an even deadlier cycle of political radicalization.

Résumé :
The Southern Georgia Regional Commission (SGRC) is a regional planning agency that conducts economic development, regional transportation and environmental planning, local government services, aging programs, workforce development, geographic information systems (GIS), and other services for an eighteen-county region. The region includes Atkinson, Bacon, Ben Hill, Berrien, Brantley, Brooks, Charlton, Clinch, Coffee, Cook, Echols, Irwin, Lanier, Lowndes, Pierce, Tift, Turner, and Ware Counties. Within its rural regional transportation program, SGRC develops rural transit development plans (TDPs) under contract to the Georgia Department of Transportation. SGRC also administers coordinated human services transportation for clients of agencies within Georgia’s Department of Human Services. In the summer of 2021, SGRC began to operate rural public transit services on a regional basis called SGRC Regional Transit, providing a mobility option for 15 of the 18 counties in the region. One of the region’s goals in establishing region-wide rural public transit is to address economic development, including providing mobility to existing and potential employment sites. The region’s 2020 update to the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) notes: “While some growth has been experienced within the region, persistent poverty, underemployment, and unemployment continue to plague the area.” Several goals and strategies in the CEDS relate to these issues of addressing poverty and employment. These include encouraging the establishment of transportation systems and facilities that support residents and visitors to broaden mobility options. In addition, some employers have already begun transportation services at their own expense. Others, including food processing business, have expressed to area workforce development and economic development professionals that they could create additional jobs if they had access to additional workers.

Résumé :
Citizen science and food is part of a new programme of work to explore how we can involve the communities we serve when building the evidence-base on which policy decisions are made. Citizen science is an approach that can provide high volumes of data with a wide geographic spread. It is relatively quick to deploy and allows access to evidence we would ordinarily have difficulty collating. This methodology has been endorsed by the European Commission for Research, Science and Innovation. There is no one size fits all definition, but citizen science projects involves engaging with communities and asking them to be part of the project, either through engaging them in data collection or through other ways of co-creation. For participants, citizen science offers learning opportunities, the satisfaction of contributing to scientific evidence and the potential to influence policy. It can also give us data which is high in volume, has wide geographical spread, is relatively quick to deploy and that we couldn’t access any other way. Projects using these methods often involve engaging with communities and asking them to be part of the project. This can be either through working with them in data collection, or through co-creation. This report demonstrates that the research community are already undertaking numerous pieces of research that align with FSA’s evidence needs. This includes examples from the UK and other global communities. Participants in such research have collected data on topics ranging from food preparation in the home to levels of chemical contaminant in foods. The findings of this report outline that citizen science could allow the FSA to target and facilitate more systematic engagement with UK and global research communities, to help address key research priorities of the FSA.
