Résumé :
Separations by density, such as the separation of non-ferrous scrap into light and heavy alloys, are often realized by means of heavy media. In principle, kinetic gravity separations in water can be faster and cheaper, because they do not rely on suspensions or salt solutions of which the density must be tightly controlled. Test results of a prototype kinetic gravity separator in combination with suitable size classification techniques show promising results for particle sizes between 2 and 10 mm.

Résumé :
AbstractPartitioning of americium from lanthanides (Ln) present in used nuclear fuel plays a key role in the sustainable development of nuclear energy1–3. This task is extremely challenging because thermodynamically stable Am(III) and Ln(III) ions have nearly identical ionic radii and coordination chemistry. Oxidization of Am(III) to Am(VI) produces AmO22+ ions distinct with Ln(III) ions, which has the potential to facilitate separations in principle. However, the rapid reduction of Am(VI) back to Am(III) by radiolysis products and organic reagents required for the traditional separation protocols including solvent and solid extractions hampers practical redox-based separations. Herein, we report a nanoscale polyoxometalate (POM) cluster with a vacancy site compatible with the selective coordination of hexavalent actinides (238U, 237Np, 242Pu and 243Am) over trivalent lanthanides in nitric acid media. To our knowledge, this cluster is the most stable Am(VI) species in aqueous media observed so far. Ultrafiltration-based separation of nanoscale Am(VI)-POM clusters from hydrated lanthanide ions by commercially available, fine-pored membranes enables the development of a once-through americium/lanthanide separation strategy that is highly efficient and rapid, does not involve any organic components and requires minimal energy input.

Résumé :
Two inherent problems associated with chromatographic separations are peak broadening and column efficiency. These are directly attributable to the interparticular porosity of the separation media in which limited utilization of column space results in column void volumes. In theory, a minimum of 26% void volume will occur if a column is packed using perfectly arranged monodispersed beads. Typically, with the best packed columns void volumes are 30 to 40%. Svec and Fréchet have introduced an HPLC separation media with no discontinuity that are prepared in a single step by a free-radical polymerization within a column acting as a mold. The resulting rods consist of a continuous molded monolith of rigid, highly porous polymer. These columns proved to be very efficient and extremely fast for reverse-phase HPLC separation of proteins and for the separation of small and mid-size molecules. In this study, we continue to explore various reaction conditions with the resulting polymerization products examined by SEM, for internal morphology.

Résumé :
Wave-mode separation can be achieved by projecting elastic wavefields onto mutually orthogonal polarization directions. In isotropic media, because the P-wave’s polarization vectors are consistent with wave vectors, the isotropic separation operators are represented by divergence and curl operators, which are easy to realize. In anisotropic media, polarization vectors deviate from wave vectors based on local anisotropic strength and separation operators lose their simplicity. Conventionally, anisotropic wave-mode separation is implemented either by direct filtering in the wavenumber domain or nonstationary filtering in the space domain, which are computationally expensive. Moreover, in conventional anisotropic separation, correcting for amplitude and phase changes of waveforms by applying separation operators is also more difficult than in an isotropic case. We have developed new operators for efficient wave-mode separation in vertical transversely isotropic (VTI) media. Our separation operators are constructed by local rotation of wave vectors to directions where the quasi-P (qP) wave is polarized. The deviation angles between the wave vectors and the qP-wave’s polarization vectors are explicitly estimated using the Poynting vectors. Obtaining polarization directions by rotating wave vectors yields separation operators in VTI media with the same forms as divergence and curl operators, except that the spatial derivatives are now rotated to implement wavefield projections in accurate polarization directions. The main increase in computational cost relative to isotropic separation operators is the estimation of the Poynting vectors, which is relatively small within elastic-wave extrapolation. As a result, applying the proposed operators is efficient. In the meantime, the waveforms corrections for divergence and curl operators can be directly extended for our new operators due to the similarities between these operators. By numerical exercises, we have determined that wave modes can be well-separated with small numerical cost using the present separation operators. The conservation of energy in wave-mode separation by applying waveform corrections was also verified.

This paper presents the results of a detailed study of the separation process in the range of characteristic values temperature (Т ≅ 0 ÷ 70 °C) and pressure (P ≅ 50 ÷ 700 kPa). The critical analysis of hydrocarbonaceous media separation process problem is made within functioning processing equipment on objects of the “Vyngapurovskoe” oil field in Russia. Modelling of first stage separation process is illustrated from data of reservoir fluid with detailed characteristic of evolution some components concentration into off-gas in dependence of temperature and pressure. Recommendations to the calculation of the component composition of hydrocarbonaceous fluids under the provisions of equilibrium thermodynamics using the model of Peng-Robinson are extradited. It has been established that the heavy hydrocarbons (С4+higher) concentration decreasing into off-gas theoretically could be achieved up to 48.41%.

Résumé :
Elastic wave propagation in anisotropic media is well represented by elastic wave equations. Modeling based on elastic wave equations characterizes both kinematics and dynamics correctly. However, because P- and S-modes are both propagated using elastic wave equations, there is a need to separate P- and S-modes to efficiently apply single-mode processing tools. In isotropic media, wave modes are usually separated using Helmholtz decomposition. However, Helmholtz decomposition using conventional divergence and curl operators in anisotropic media does not give satisfactory results and leaves the different wave modes only partially separated. The separation of anisotropic wavefields requires more sophisticated operators that depend on local material parameters. Anisotropic wavefield-separation operators are constructed using the polarization vectors evaluated at each point of the medium by solving the Christoffel equation for local medium parameters. These polarization vectors can be represented in the space domain as localized filtering operators, which resemble conventional derivative operators. The spatially variable pseudo-derivative operators perform well in heterogeneous VTI media even at places of rapid velocity/density variation. Synthetic results indicate that the operators can be used to separate wavefields for VTI media with an arbitrary degree of anisotropy.

Résumé :
Abstract Separating weak diffractions in the prestack domain plays a vital role in high-resolution imaging small-scale discontinuities or inhomogeneities, which are associated with the migration paths and storage spaces for carbonate fracture-cave reservoirs. A shot-domain diffraction separation method is proposed with a SVMF (space-varying media filter) in the flattened shot domain. The diffractions with fast dynamic changings, including damping amplitudes and phase reversal, are filtered out by the spacing-varying median filter along the prediction-step directions of the flattened shot domain. The proposed method opens a possibility for separating diffractions in the shot domain and has an advantage in the traditional common-offset diffraction separation method. A numerical experiment illustrates the good performance of the proposed method in eliminating reflections and separating diffractions in the shot domain, and the field application further verifies its potential value in resolving the hidden small-scale cavities and tiny faults in carbonate reservoirs.

Résumé :
To efficiently and synchronously separate oil/water mixture and adsorbed dyes, corn-cob-covered quartz sand (CCQS) filter media with underwater superoleophobic qualities and underoil extremely hydrophobic qualities were fabricated by grafting a corn cob onto the surface of quartz sand using the dip-coating technique. Due to the introduction of more hydrogen bonds on the quartz surface and the construction of a rough structure, the underwater oil contact angles and underoil water contact angles of the CCQS were 150.3~154.6° and 132.2°~154.6°, respectively. A separator for oil/water separation was devised, and the CCQS-filled separator could synchronously separate the oil/water mixture and adsorb malachite green. The separation efficiency of the oil/water mixture was over 99.93%, the removal rate of MG was 99.73%, and the adsorption capacity was 7.28 mg/g. The CCQS could keep its wettability steady under challenging environmental circumstances. Therefore, the study offered a novel concept for the successful oil/water mixture separation, while synchronously adsorbing dye.

Résumé :
The mergers and separations that shaped the decolonizing third world also made media history. Singapore’s separation from Malaysia on August 9, 1965, after two tumultuous years of union was no exception. Radio and television, which broadcasted the seminal moments, embodied the mergers and separations of media forms—this is a fact overlooked in both national histories and regional media scholarship. Reconfigured with the complex, shifting intersections of radio and television, the otherwise familiar account of merger and separation in the “Singapore Story” emerges anew with static noises, pauses, iterations, and interruptions. The technical effects of cuts and jumps in early radio and television editing undergird and thereby challenge the politics of representation in studies of decolonization. At the same time, technological transfer and adaptation in the former British colonies open the provincial confines of media theory to a more global, materialist trajectory. This article connects the televised broadcast of Singapore’s independence in 1965 to early enthusiasm for radio’s disembodied voice during the colonial, interwar period. The discussion then examines how Amir Muhammad’s 2007 independent documentary Village People Radio Show (Apa khabar orang kampung) recovers radio’s forgotten role in the Second Malayan Emergency, also known as the Communist Insurgency War (1967–89).

Résumé :
Abstract We present a method that combines the extraction of polychlonnated biphenyls (PCBs) and their separation from relatively large quantities of fat in biological matrixes by combined supercritical fluid extraction and separation. Cyano-functionalized silica gel, silica gel, aluminum oxide, Florisil, 3-aminopropyl- functionalized silica gel, and octadecyl-functionalized silica gel were tested for suitability as chromatographic media for separation of PCBs from lipids. Silica gel, 3-aminopropyl-functionalized silica gel, and Florisil adequately separated PCBs from lipids when eluted with supercritical CO2. Florisil allowed both the extraction of PCBs and their separation from lipids in PCB-spiked chicken egg and fish. Two grams of sample containing PCBs at 0.125 μg/g was sufficient for subsequent separations and the low-level analysis required for the more toxic PCB components.

Résumé :
Cutinase is a hydrolytic enzyme that has both properties of lipase and esterase, thus finding its use in many areas. Previous studies have investigated both upstream and downstream processes for cutinase production from microbial source. However, no study has yet to address the use of membrane chromatography for cutinase purification, which is more favourable in terms of process resolution and product throughput as compared to the conventional gel chromatography. Hydrophobic interaction was chosen as the separation mechanism for cutinase purification in this study. The optimisation of cutinase purification in two different types of chromatographic media; conventional packed-gel and membrane matrix, were pre-determined by the best compromise between the recovery and purity of the purified cutinase. It was found that the optimised condition were of pH 4.0 and 1.0 M ammonium sulfate for the conventional column (50% recovery, 4.8-fold purity) and pH 6.0 with 1.5 M ammonium sulfate for the membrane–matrix column(87% recovery, 30-fold purity). Preferential interaction analysis was used to describe the protein chromatographic behaviour in each chromatographic media. Graph of natural algorithm of protein retention data to the function of salt concentration at pH 4.0 and 6.0 for each column were plotted. It was found that at the optimum pH condition for gel-packed column, a small amount of ammonium sulfate was sufficient to achieve maximum cutinase recovery and purity since the effect of salt at that particular pH were less significant. Consequently, the number of released water molecules were calculated and it was observed that for membrane column, larger number of water was released at pH 6.0 illustrating more protein were bounded to the stationary phase, thus explaining the optimum pH condition of the particular column.

Until recently, the term “elastic” usually implied two‐dimensional (2-D) and isotropic. In this limited context, the divergence and curl operators have found wide use as wave separation operators. For example, Mora (1987) used them in his inversion method to allow separate correlation of P and S arrivals, although the separation is buried in the math and not obvious. Clayton (1981) used them explicitly in several modeling and inversion methods. Devaney and Oristaglio (1986) used closely related operators to separate P and S arrivals in elastic VSP data.

Résumé :
Abstract Phase separation in space is critical for gas-free propellant supply, life support systems, refueling of spacecraft in low earth orbit (LEO), and for deep space exploration missions. In the absence of gravity, the stability of the liquid-gas interface depends on capillary forces. High liquid flow rates, sudden accelerations, and vibrational disturbances can cause the free surface of the liquid to collapse, which results in the ingestion of gas. Propellant tanks may have screen channel liquid acquisition devices (SCLADs) to position and maintain a gas-free propellant supply to the outlet. A saturated porous screen permits liquid to pass through but acts as a barrier to the gas. We investigated phase separation in porous media integrated capillary channels during parabolic flights (33rd DLR parabolic flight campaign in March 2019). An open side of a rectangular channel was covered with a dutch twill weave 200×1400. The liquid was ingested into the channel from its surroundings by establishing a differential pressure across the screen section. The gas-phase was blocked during the liquid withdrawal. We could show that the gas breakthrough occurs when the pressure difference across the screen exceeds the bubble point pressure. The experimental results showed good agreement with correlations from literature.

Résumé :
As the effect of density separation for waste plastic mixtures was poor, this research studied the impacts of wetting agents on the sorting rates of waste plastic mixtures and the mechanisms of wetting agents in density separation. The results showed that the surface activity of plastics could be changed by wetting agents and thus the sorting rates of plastics under the density separation system could be improved. Impacts of wetting agents such as CaLS, NP-7 and MC on density separation of plastics are related not only to the molecular structure of plastic materials but also to the separating media. The density separation system in the presence of different wetting agents established in this research separated the target plastic with a rate of 100%, which applied to a mixture of 9 kinds of common plastics such as PVC, PC, PS and so on.

Résumé :
Single long spiral tube column pressure swing adsorption (PSA) unit, 25 mm diameter, and 6 m length was constructed to study the separation of water from ethanol at azeotropic concentration of 95 wt%. The first three meters of the column length acted as a vaporizer and the remaining length acted as an adsorber filled by commercial 3A zeolite. The effect of pressure, temperature and feed flow rate on the product ethanol purity, process recovery and productivity were studied. The results showed that ethanol purity increased with temperature and pressure and decreased with feed flow rate. The purity decreased with increasing productivity. The purity range was 98.9 % to 99.6 %, the recovery range was 0.82 to 0.92 and the productivity range was 0.3 to 1.05 kg ethanol/kg zeolite.h.

Résumé :
The effect of operating parameters on the batch scale separation of hydrocarbon mixture (benzene and hexane) usingemulsion liquid membrane technique is reported. Sparkleen detergent was used as surfactant and heavy mineral oil assolvent to receive the permeates. From the experimental results, the parameters that influenced the permeation are, composition of feed, contact timewith solvent, ratio of volume of solvent to volume of hydrocarbon feed, ratio of volume of surfactant solution to volumeof hydrocarbon feed, surfactant concentration, mixing intensity and glycerol as polar additive in the surfactant solutionto eliminate drop breakup. The best conditions for the separation in this study were found to be: composition of feed (mole fraction ofbenzene=0.5245), contact time of 10min. , ratio of volumes of solvent to feed equal 3.5 , ratio of volumes of surfactantsolution to feed of 0.4, surfactant concentration of 1wt%, mixing intensity equal 1000rpm and 70% by weight of polaradditive. These conditions gave a separation factor of (8.0).

Résumé :
The conditions of sorption of chloride complexes of Pb2+, Cd2+, Fe2+, and Fe3+ ions from media of hydrochloric acid have been studied with a strongly basic anion exchanger - Ostion LG AT. The experiments used an exchanger microcolumn connected with atomic absorption spectrometer as a selective detector of metal ions. From the relation found between retention of the ions studied and hydrochloric acid concentration, conditions of separation have been suggested and used for separations of small amounts of lead and cadmium from many times higher amounts of iron and aluminium in soil extract before determination of both the foreign metals by means of AAS method. The yield of separation exceeded 95%.

Résumé :
In this research paper, a numerical study regarding gas-oil separation is presented. Employing the geometry of a classic separator used by the NRDI for Gas Turbines COMOTI and a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, the computational domain was defined. To perform the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) investigation, the mesh was created with the ANSYS Meshing tool, and the ANSYS CFX was employed as a solver. The computational domain was split into 5 subdomains, 3 were fluid and 2 were defined as porous media. The volume porosity, loss model, and permeability were set up. In terms of turbulence flow, the standard k–ε model was adopted. The results of the numerical calculations in terms of oil volume fraction and streamline profiles were used to analyze the separator configuration. The results show that the numerical investigation with the VOF (Volume of Fluid Method) - CFD model is capable of analyzing the performance of a two-phase separator equipped with two demisters-porous media.

Résumé :
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as novel biomarkers and therapeutic material. However, the small size (~200 nm) of EVs makes efficient separation challenging. Here, a physical/chemical stress-free separation of EVs based on diffusion through a nanoporous membrane chip is presented. A polycarbonate membrane with 200 nm pores, positioned between two chambers, functions as the size-selective filter. Using the chip, EVs from cell culture media and human serum were separated. The separated EVs were analyzed by nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA), scanning electron microscopy, and immunoblotting. The experimental results proved the selective separation of EVs in cell culture media and human serum. Moreover, the diffusion-based separation showed a high yield of EVs in human serum compared to ultracentrifuge-based separation. The EV recovery rate analyzed from NTA data was 42% for cell culture media samples. We expect the developed method to be a potential tool for EV separation for diagnosis and therapy because it does not require complicated processes such as immune, chemical reaction, and external force and is scalable by increasing the nanoporous membrane size.

Résumé :
This work deals with the separation of benzene and toluene from a BTX fraction. The separation was carried out using adsorption by molecular sieve zeolite 13X in a fixed bed. The concentration of benzene and toluene in the influent streams was measured using gas chromatography. The effect of flow rate in the range 0.77 – 2.0 cm3/min on the benzene and toluene extraction from BTX fraction was studied. The flow rate increasing decreases the breakthrough and saturation times. The effect of bed height in the range 31.6 – 63.3 cm on benzene and toluene adsorption from BTX fraction was studied. The increase of bed height increasing increases the break point values. The effect of the concentration of benzene in the range 0.0559 – 0.2625g/cm3 and toluene in the range 0.144 – 0.21 g/cm3 was studied. The increasing of inlet solute concentration increases the slope of the breakthrough curve. The amount of toluene adsorbed in the packed bed at any time is higher than that of benzene while it decreases after the saturation time. The best operating conditions in this work for benzene and toluene adsorption are 0.77 cm3/min of feed and 31.6 cm bed height of zeolite 13X.

Résumé :
Abstract Dialytic enrichment, using a nonpolar polymeric film or membrane, is proposed as a new approach for the separation of organic contaminants from fish lipid. Nonpolar organochlorine analytes diffuse from the fish lipid through a polyethylene membrane into cyclopentane. Separations of 48 h or less in duration afforded excellent recoveries for all analytes tested and removed 93% of the fish oil. Kinetics of membrane diffusion and possible controlling factors are elucidated for selected analytes and model compounds. Potential advantages of this technique over conventional lipld-removal methods such as gel permeation chromatography include simplicity, large sample capacity, reduced solvent requirements, and amenability to interfacing in-line with other enrichment modules.
