Résumé :
This chapter focuses on tales in which the virtue of compassion is embodied in the persona of the devoted mother. Collectively, Maithil women's tales assert that maternal devotion presents an especially intensified and idealized form of the otherwise gender undifferentiated virtue of compassion. The action women take based on this maternal sentiment is portrayed as making a positive difference in the lives of children, even other women's children. As mentioned in the previous chapter, a mother may pass on her moral or sinful nature through the sharing of bodily substances. In these ways, through their stories, Maithil women position their own embodied selves as a fundamental source of social virtue.

Résumé :
Islamophobia and anti-Muslim sentiment have existed as parts of the religious landscape since Europeans first arrived in North America. The long history of these antipathies is a balance between continuities of received wisdom regarding Islam and Muslims and historically specific outbursts sparked and shaped by current social, economic, political, and military events. Tapping into enduring suspicions, some provocateurs deliberately aim to perpetuate stereotypes, broadcast misinformation, promote discrimination, and even instigate violence. A comparative logic drives the skepticism, wariness, and—occasionally—outright hostility toward, at different times, Islam as a religion, a specific Muslim, or Muslims as a religious, racial, or ethnic stereotype. This comparison presupposes a positive American norm that Islam and Muslims fail to meet in terms of theology, development, sexism, and nationalism.

Résumé :
Over the decades Europe has received many and diverse flows of people from around the world. Migrants coming from outside the EU along intra-European migrants have changed the landscape of migrations with their diverse mobility projects. At the same time European citizens residing in their countries of origin are mobile in multiple ways when they engage in travel and consumption across the borders or they connect to family and friends based in other countries. In this chapter I will argue that while European citizens themselves have become more mobile engaging in cross-border exchanges and interactions, these processes have also brought about the change in their thinking about mobility of others who migrate from other EU Member States and beyond. Using the Eurobarometer data I illustrate how attitudes towards intra- and extra-European migration differ, with largely positive sentiments towards migrants coming from within the EU and predominantly negative attitudes towards migrants from outside the EU. However, determinants of these attitudes remain similar, irrespectively if they are directed at European movers or third country nationals. Among examined determinants of sentiments, engagement in cross-border practices seems to coincide with more positive opinions about migration.

Résumé :
This article proposes an entirely different understanding of the goals of cultural sociology, arguing that the subject position of the “spectator” should replace that of the “social scientist.” It contends that cultural sociology should aspire for fidelity—to moods and experiences, to locations and dramas, and to the truth of experience—and that this fidelity can be achieved through witnessing. In order to build the case for a new kind of cultural sociology, the article cites the works of Adam Smith, and especially his theory of social morality founded on the figure of the “impartial spectator.” It also examines four initial problems, including the problem of the alleged distinction between social action and spectatorship and the problem of identifying the appropriate “spectacle.” It concludes by highlighting some important lessons that need to be taken into account so that cultural sociology will continue to flourish.

Résumé :
The chapter summarizes the main argument of the book. It contends that previously identified value-based arguments—from constitutional identity, common sentiment, and universal reason—fail as independent grounds of moral judgment. However, combining these arguments allows constitutional courts to emulate the moral point of view in a process that is both sensitive to different moral perspectives and attuned to their institutional position. The chapter concludes that constitutional courts ought to respect the moral intuitions of the people that can be reflectively attributed to their constitutional identity.

Résumé :
The evidence on the positive economic impact of migration has become stronger; yet anti-immigration politics and sentiments have increased. ‘The future of international migration’ explores the coming challenges for migrants, citizens, and policymakers in light of the current trends in migration patterns and processes as well as policies. It considers the changes in Asian migration; the growing issue of increased internal migration; the impact of climate change on migration; temporary migration which combats brain drain and fills specific short-term gaps in employment; the shifting policies on irregular migration from control to management; the reform of the international refugee regime; and the challenges of integration and the need for respect of migrants.

This chapter presents key findings from neuroimaging studies on the neuronal network underlying pain and the affective states. After reviewing the basic concepts and methodological issues relating to research in the field of affective neuroscience, the chapter considers basic negative affective states before turning to basic positive affective states. For each affective state, the chapter analyzes the contribution of neuroimaging studies in elucidating the neuronal mechanisms of the perceptual identification of stimuli related to them, along with the neuronal correlates of the actual experiences (the sentiments) and of the emotional reactions that characterize these affective states. Finally, it discusses the basic neuronal circuitry involved in pain perception in humans and animals as well as the results of neuroimaging studies on pain.

Green, Karen. Locke, Enlightenment, and Liberty in the Works of Catharine Macaulay and her Contemporaries. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198810261.003.0006.

Résumé :
This chapter demonstrates how a number of women in eighteenth-century Europe exploited a contrast between ‘liberty’ and ‘licence’ in their political writings. The authors discussed include Catharine Macaulay (1731–91) and her contemporaries Catherine II of Russia, Octavie Belot, Louise Keralio, and Elise Reimarus. It is shown that, in their works, these women are strongly opposed to unfettered licence, the freedom to do as one wills in the absence of external impediments and constraints. They distinguish this kind of freedom from their own positive notion: the freedom to govern one’s self in accordance with the moral law of reason. In this respect, this chapter argues, these women adapt the earlier ideas of English philosopher John Locke. It is shown that in the writings of Macaulay, in particular, Locke’s sentiments about liberty and law are taken to a radical democratic conclusion: an ideal of fair and equal representation of the people.

Bergès, Sandrine, dir. Sophie de Grouchy's Letters on Sympathy. Traduit par Eric Schliesser. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190637088.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Sophie de Grouchy (1764–1822), published her Lettres sur la Sympathie in 1798, together with her translation of Adam Smith’s The Theory of Moral Sentiments. This short text is presented as her critical commentary on Smith, but also offers original analyses of the relationship of emotional and moral development to economic, institutional, and political reform. Like Smith, Grouchy believes that sympathy is fundamental to social well-being. She improves on his theory by offering an account of its origin; and she argues it is the result of early relationships of dependence. The political conclusions Grouchy draws from her analysis are in tune with her republican views: social equality can only be the result of recognizing that we depend on each other. Deepening Smith’s position, Grouchy argues that inequality hinders the growth of sympathy and renders fruitful cooperation between the different strata of society unlikely or impossible. This new translation of the text is presented with an introduction divided into three chapters. Chapter 1 covers Sophie de Grouchy’s life, times, and sources. Chapter 2 discusses Grouchy’s work, with a special emphasis on the relationship of the Letters to Smith’s The Theory of Moral Sentiments, which the Letters were a response to, as well as a discussion of other writings by Grouchy. Chapter 3 touches on three main philosophical themes present in the Letters: political philosophy, with an emphasis on the republican aspect of Grouchy’s thought; her legal philosophy and political economy; and her aesthetics.

Résumé :
This chapter examines masculine individualism’s push–pull relationship with sympathy, beginning in The Scarlet Letter’s Custom-House. There, Hawthorne’s narrator sympathetically presses Hester Prynne’s dusty, scarlet A against his heart, feeling a burning tingle as he places himself in her position. Sections read touch and untouchability in The Scarlet Letter, exploring what encouraged male readers to overcome what Henry Thoreau referred to as masculinity’s “gulf of feeling” to experience sentimental connection. Writing through alienation and writer’s block, Hawthorne’s tingling connection with Hester in the Custom-House propelled him to complete the novel in just five weeks, after being fired from his position as surveyor. His imagined intimacy with Prynne emerges against myths of the self-made man and the untouchable citizen-subject. Readings of tactility reveal alphabetic print and textual space as sites of flux and flow, intimacy and distance, as writers and readers sympathetically lean into and recoil from page and print.

Résumé :
Chapter 4 deals with the evolution of the party in the post-war period until the late 1960s. It suggests that because the recovery of democracy after the Second World War coincided with multi-partism, this credited parties with an unprecedented legitimation in the first post-war years. This general sentiment was built on the role parties played in all countries under Fascist or Nazi rule, and the more parties were active, the more confidence they gained. The positive reception of parties went hand in hand with their organizational development. However, precisely when parties deployed their full strength, they were tamed by societal and technological transformation. The chapter discusses how the parties’ response to 1960s’ post-industrialization by becoming catch-all structures depressed their legitimation. The post-war general consensus on the parties’ central role faded, opening the way for a new type of party criticism: parties now were considered not divisive enough but rather too consensual.

Boddice, Rob. Sympathy as Callousness ? Physiology and Vivisection. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252040580.003.0004.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
There has been much confusion about Darwin’s connection to the field of physiology, with regard to his support for vivisection. The chapter connects the intellectual position of Darwin with regard to sympathy to the laboratory practice of animal experimentation, and lays out the moral argument of scientists that vivisection involved a necessary temporary callousness in the operating room for the sake of a greater good. This callousness, the possibility of which was greatly enhanced by the use of anesthetics, was ascribed to the highly evolved man of science, uniquely disposed to turn off immediate aesthetic and sentimental responses to the causation of pain or to the sight of blood, based on his ability to abstract or rationalise sympathy and project it to suffering humanity.

Pack, Jason. Libya and the Global Enduring Disorder. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197631317.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
We no longer live in a world governed by coherent international coordination, a unified NATO bloc, or an American hegemon capable of solving collective action problems. The post-Cold War Order is history. Libya and the Global Enduring Disorder argues that Libya's ongoing conflict constitutes an ideal microcosm for examining the salient features of this new era of geopolitics, especially its self-reinforcing nature. Libya's post-Qadhafi turmoil is facilitated by the absence of coherent international cooperation, while the country's incremental implosion gives rise to cross-border contagion--corroding global institutions and further gumming the gears of diplomacy. Full of unexpected takes and gripping anecdotes, Jason Pack draws on over two decades of work focussing on Libya and Syria to highlight the Kafkaesque aspects of today's global affairs. He shows how even the momentous and tragic events of the Arab Spring uprisings and the assassination in Benghazi of his friend Ambassador Christopher Stevens failed to occasion a unified Western response. Actually, they further undercut global coordination and indirectly led to both Brexit and Trump's election. Pack draws back the traditional veil of secrecy surrounding Washington lobbyists to share his counterintuitive discovery that in key industries certain dominant multinationals behave as a cartel, seeking to block new entrants to their market niche. By eschewing positive-sum thinking, such incumbent psychology creates lose-lose, beggar-thy-neighbour, self-reinforcing conflicts. This dynamic mirrors the fear-based, zero-sum thinking that animates trade wars, nativist anti-migrant sentiment, and neo-populist leaders like Trump, Orban, Bolsonaro and Putin. Welcome to the Enduring Disorder.

Feinstein, Yuval. Rally 'round the Flag. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197629710.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This book revisits the rally-round-the-flag phenomenon in the United States, which is characterized by a sudden and sharp increase in the public approval rating of the sitting US president in response to a war or security crisis. Notably, relatively few wars and security crises have generated rallies. Therefore, the book examines the conditions and processes through which rallies have emerged. The first chapter characterizes the rally phenomenon, explains its political importance, and discusses the book’s broader contribution. The following theoretical discussion (Chapters 2–3) critically assesses the relevance of influential arguments about public opinion for the rally phenomenon and then introduces a novel rally theory. Five empirical chapters feature an extensive comparative investigation of public reactions to US military actions and security crises in the years 1950–2020, through which the author identifies the unique sets of conditions for the emergence of rallies in this period. A sixth empirical chapter analyzes survey data to identify individual-level mechanisms of attitude shifts during rally periods. The findings reveal that rally periods have emerged in the United States in the focal period only under circumstances that lead most Americans to believe it was necessary to take military action to maintain or restore collective honor and gain the respect of other nations. In most rallies, a desire to restore collective honor and prestige stemmed from a preexisting feeling of national humiliation. In response, presidential rhetoric that appealed to national sentiment to justify military action and marked the target around a despised national enemy evoked positive emotions that motivated the majority in the public to rally behind the commander-in-chief. The book concludes by proposing future directions for research on the rally phenomenon in the United States and other countries.

Hill, Mark J. Actors and Spectators : Rousseau’s Contribution to the Eighteenth-century Debate on Self-interest. Edinburgh University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474422857.003.0005.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
A debate between virtuous self-interest and social morality emerged in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The historical narrative of these ideas has been touched on by others – such as Albert O. Hirschman, Pierre Force, and Eric MacGilvray – with nuance and detail, but broadly one can recognize two camps: those who saw public utility in self-interest through the positive externalities of commerce, and those who had serious concerns over the political outcomes of the entanglement of commerce and virtue. This chapter follows these studies and attempts to locate Rousseau (primarily) and Smith (secondarily) within this debate. By looking at how their particular moral philosophies interact with their political thought it is argued that Rousseau is distinct from Smith in an important, but often confused, way: while some have argued that Rousseau is a moralist and Smith a philosopher of the political and social value of self-interest, it will be argued here that the opposite may be true. That is, despite Rousseau's “general will” and Smith's “impartial spectator” having been identified as similar moral tools used to overcome the negative aspects of self-interest through externalized self-reflection, it is argued that Rousseau is a moral rationalist who is skeptical of reason as a moral motivator, and thus dismisses the general will as a tool which can encourage personal moral action, while Smith is a moral realist, but a particularly soft one in regard to the motivational force of morality, and instead turns to rationality – through the impartial spectator – as a source of moral action. The upshot of this distinction being, Rousseau does not deny the power of commerce and self-interest as motivational forces, simply their social utility; social institutions like English coffeehouses – centres of politeness and doux commerce – should exist, and self-interest should motivate, but both need to be cleansed of the vice of commerce. That is, this chapter argues that Smith is moral realist who relies on reason – specifically that one must be a spectator who can impartially and rationally reflect on situations in order to will moral ends – and Rousseau is a moral rationalist who relies on sentiment – one must have an interest in situations if they are to be a moral actor.
