Résumé :
ABSTRACTSchubert’s lifelong interest in literature, his close friendships with poets and his preference for lyric poetry in his prolific song settings suggest that his compositional language may be shaped as much by a literary imagination as by musical concerns. This article argues for a close correspondence between Schubert’s late instrumental style and Friedrich Schiller’s conception of the elegiac. In ‘On Naïve and Sentimental Poetry’ Schiller describes the sentimental poet as having to contend with two conflicting objects, the ideal and actuality, and to represent their opposition either satirically or elegiacally: whereas satire rails against the imperfections of present reality, elegy expresses longing for an ideal that is lost and unattainable. Paradoxically, however, the poet’s longing must take place in a flawed present; the elegiac thus projects not only a disjunction between divided worlds, but also a cyclic temporality in which memory and desire, past and future, are both entwined with the immediacy of present experience. In both Schiller and Schubert, this paradoxical temporal sensibility is often represented by patterns of returning, repetition and circularity. A close reading of Schubert’s Moment musical in A flat major, d780/2, illustrates how Schiller’s conception of the elegiac might be put into analytical practice.

Résumé :
While the cultural importance of sentimental fiction has been well documented by critics such as Jane Tompkins and Claudia Tate, the nature and function of sentimental poetry has remained largely unexplored. This essay offers a corrective to this critical tendency by reading major poems by Emily Dickinson in terms of the contemporary sentimental fictions of death and immortality to which they are indebted. Against those critics who have emphasized Dickinson's embrace of sentimentality's domestication of death, the essay argues that her poems contest and even negate the fictions of immortality made available by popular authors such as Elizabeth Stuart Phelps and Ik Marvel. Dickinson's poems employ certain distinctive generic conventions of sentimentality's conduct of death-the passage from life to immortality, the posthumous reunion, the equation of heaven and home. But where sentimental fictions employ familiar scenes of earth and home to represent the less-familiar prospect of heaven and immortality, Dickinson's poems remove hometown places and persons from heaven's scene; where sentimental fictions domesticate death, her poems detach and strip it bare. The characteristic features of her poetry-scenelessness and temporal transcendence-are thus the mark neither of Dickinson's incipient modernism nor of the lyric voice's isolation from society or history, but rather of Dickinson's deliberate departure from a historically specific mode of representing immortality.

The medieval respect towards progenitors induced not only sentimental feelings but also practical steps, such as sponsoring works of art. In the present study, the family connections of Landgrave Hermann I of Thuringia to the Carolingians and to (Saint) Guillaume/Guilhem d’Orange, from the family of the Counts of Autun, have been explored. The possibility of the role of these kinships as a “driving force” behind initiating and sponsoring the epos Willehalm of Wolfram von Eschenbach has been analyzed.

Résumé :
From "A Psalm of Life" and "The Village Blacksmith" to Evangeline and The Song of Hiawatha, Longfellow provided middle-class Americans with models of self-comportment and means for coping with the anxieties and stresses of a commercial society on the move. Mixing tones of melancholy and patient resolution, the poetry served to attenuate polarized gender roles and, especially, to authorize a sentimental or domestic style of masculinity in opposition to more aggresive, competitive, business-oriented modes of "manliness." Though this body of verse employs martial imagery and masculinist terms in order to evoke the tenor of mind and will required by an increasingly complex socioeconomic environment, Longfellow converts these images and terms to elaborate a "feminized" ideal of personal and social behavior: sublimative, spiritualized, quietly persistent. The figure of Evangeline crosses gender lines to instruct both men and women how to bear up under the burden of American "modernity," while that of Hiawatha blends gender traits to embody a soft-but-still-manly masculinity, with implications for both heterosexual and homosocial relations. The efficacy and the very premises of Longfellow's cultural service, which secured his enormous popularity in the antebellum period, were called into question with the advent of realist antisentimentalism, and the poet's work suffered permanent devaluation under the canons of the modernist taste.

Résumé :
Scholars of nineteenth-century women's poetry often recount that the sentimental piety – indeed, the quasi-religiosity – of the Victorian “poetess” disappears from women's poetry in the mordant irony of thefin de siècle.Virginia Blain, for instance, has recently identified Mathilde Blind and Constance Naden as representatives of “the new breed of post-Darwinian atheists” that comes to replace an earlier, implicitly Christian feminine tradition associated with Elizabeth Barrett Browning (Blain 332). On a related note, I have recently proposed that George Eliot'sLegend of Jubalcollections (1874, 1878) present a rather late instance of this poetess tradition (LaPorte 159–61). In what follows, I would like to argue thatfin-de-siècleiconoclasts such as Blind and Naden actually work hard to reclaim and redeem some of the prominent religious elements of the mid-century poetess tradition, and that Eliot's unusual combination of sentimental piety and religious skepticism gives them a particularly useful model for doing so.

Résumé :
Karen L. Kilcup, “Feeling American in the Poetic Republic” (pp. 299–335) Recent scholarship concerning nineteenth-century American poetry has challenged petrified attitudes that depict it as almost exclusively sentimental, unoriginal, and meritless. Yet, absent a historicized conceptual framework for assessing the considerable achievements of these poets, we still undervalue and oversimplify their work. Poetry reviews published between 1820 and 1840 show how properly calibrated emotion shaped readers’ tastes and identities, individual and national, in what I call the poetic republic: a country in which nearly everyone read, wrote, or heard verse. Critics’ appraisals intimate their anxious investment in creating authentic American poetry. Given British contentions that Americans were uncivilized, this anxiety coalesced around several related questions: How should writers approach the subject of Indians? What affective stances should poets assume? Was sentimental discourse, especially on Native Americans, inherently “savage”? This essay illuminates the period’s genre norms, concurrently questioning two current critical conventions. Demonstrating how poetry—including its producers and its publics—participated energetically in American nation-building, the essay complicates Benedict Anderson’s assumption that newspapers and novels singularly shaped national self-concepts. It also establishes how sentimentalism was attacked much earlier than today’s scholarship asserts. Simultaneously accommodating and disciplining wilderness (whether formulated as untamed nature and its wild inhabitants, or as uncontrolled, feminized sentimentality), reviewers collectively endorsed dispassionate, elevated nature poetry—often inhabited by Native Americans—as prototypically American, while they disparaged affective excess that they typically gendered as feminine. These verse norms strongly impacted the reception and reputations of the period’s two principal poets, William Cullen Bryant and Lydia Sigourney.

While looking to the body and finding it engraved by cultural, imaginary and power-related texts through a discourse embodied in itself, this research proposes a new vertiginous approach to it by analyzing the following works: Poesia completa II, more specifically, Educa??o sentimental, and Novas cartas portuguesas. Such transgressive and performatic works are from Maria Teresa Horta (1937-), Portuguese writer, who proposes a new education by a renewed language: a sentimental education spawned from the erotic element. Starting from the deconstruction of the view over the spoiled body and exposed in Novas cartas portuguesas, from the poetic texts in Educa??o sentimental, as well as in remaining ones in Poesia completa II, Horta disassembles and reassembles the body, giving a new meaning to the symbols that surround us and our experiences. Other than proposing to all, men and women, such new meaning of the behavior and current practices models, Horta s education allows, through a performance action, the construction of a stage for female identity, free from the phallic influence. A new identity, able to handle all holy and profane characteristics of women, discarding the chromatic lens of sin. Horta s poetry emerges as a new proposal of literary labor
Garber-Roberts, Scottie. « Deconstructing the "Woman of Sentiment" : Parody as Agency in the Poetry of Phoebe Cary ». Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2020. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/3766.

Résumé :
The work of nineteenth-century American poet Phoebe Cary presents a complex puzzle of exigence and purpose that combines social structure, political climate, and personal history. Known for her somber and spiritual sentimental poetry, Cary shocked readers and reviewers alike when she published her collection Poems and Parodies in 1854, which contained a series of scathing and hilarious parodies based on popular sentimental poetry. In my thesis, I work to untangle the various contextual elements surrounding Cary’s writing in order to gain a better understanding of the dual nature of the poet and her work. Through an examination of nineteenth-century American culture, sentimentalism, Cary’s career, and a close reading of selected parodies, I argue that by intentionally undermining patriarchal, sentimental conventions, Cary both reinstates agency and plurality to women through her female speakers and asserts her own agency as an autonomous artist.

Militello, J. « From the maternal to the mechanical : the struggle against sentiment in contemporary American motherhood poetry ». Thesis, Bath Spa University, 2017. http://researchspace.bathspa.ac.uk/9484/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The purpose of this study is to examine the poems of a small number of contemporary American poets who have worked to undermine poetic traditions of sentimentality that have sometimes figured large in the representation of motherhood. The study focuses on writers who have been formative to my own practice and who have helped me consider a challenge that I have wrestled with in my own writing and personal life. I write about their practices in relation to my own creative project, and to a concern that the more challenging aspects of motherhood not be oppressed. The first two chapters define idealism and sentimentality as factors that have been an important strand of motherhood poetry, explore the ways in which some contemporary American poets have sought to counter these factors in their work, and address the ways in which poets such as Sylvia Plath have examined the loss of maternal identity, which acts as precursor to the depersonalization of the mother in poetry. The thesis then investigates the depersonalization of the maternal figure by addressing the ways in which the mother can be mechanized and objectified in poems, and explores the objectification of the child in the work of several poets, showing how children have been embodied as objects in order to counter the culturally enforced response a child’s presence engenders. These later chapters also explore some of the reasons a poet might objectify the mother and child figure, and address the effects of this approach. As a way of concluding each chapter, the study speaks to the creative manuscript and its contextualization, discussing the ways in which the research has influenced the writing of the poems. The creative portion of the work is a manuscript of poems titled 'The Reproduction Cinema', which also addresses maternal struggle. The study finds that the objectification and depersonalization of mother and child is one important method by which poets wishing to write against more traditional ideas of motherhood might do so. The conclusion suggests that this more inclusive version of a poetics of the maternal experience will help broaden the discourse around the poetry of motherhood.

MacCartey, Kelli. « "Different sentiments & ; different connections supports them" : sensibility, community, and diversity in British women's Romantic-period poetry ». Thesis, University of Warwick, 2004. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/55479/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
With diversity as an overarching theme, women writers' responses to the cultural feminisation and developing social climate of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Britain are explored through analyses of their poems on sensibility, community, and abolition. To determine a focus for expressive criticism and recover Romantic women writers from the social and historical contexts that have previously succeeded in highlighting male literary achievements, women's poetry is considered a distinct contribution to Romanticism. This dissertation analyses poems written by Joanna Baillie, Anna Barbauld, Harriet and Maria Falconar, Frances Greensted, Frances Greville, Elizabeth Hands, Eliza Knipe, Isabella Lickbarrow, Hannah More, Amelia Opie, Priscilla Pointon, Mary Robinson, Mary Scott, Helen Maria Williams, Ann Yearsley, and Mary Julia Young. Although literature brought together the public and private spheres, sensibility mediated between the two and served as a social currency for women. The various applications of sensibility are apparent in its dual-gendered nature, its link with reason, and the significance of economic language. A new genre of the "Address to Sensibility" was prominent in the period and followed a loose formula which defined sensibility, traced its personal impact, and determined a link between the Romantic culture and heightened emotion. Through explorations of poems on intellectual coteries, patronage, creative influence, Reviews, and literary critique, it is evident that women poets' affiliations with the literary community were marked by a discomfort based on their literary associations, the anxiety about their public reception, and the social differences in the literary community. However, the development of social, intellectual, literary, and critical communities alleviated this discomfort and contributed to women's participation in literary culture. In addition, women poets expressed sensibility and used images of community in diverse ways in their works against slavery and the trade. Abolitionist poetry acts as a case study of the particular motifs, highlighted throughout, such as the amalgamation of masculine and feminine, the political and economic applications of sensibility, the association of feeling with reason and community, and the assertion of individuality amidst commonality. Women poets' petitions to alleviate the sufferings of slaves paralleled arguments for the improvement of British society to benefit women. The poems discussed signify the complexity of the issues of sensibility, community, and diversity.

Neveux, Julie.

This dissertation studies poetic meaning using linguistic tools. It offers a cognitive, phenomenological and enunciative definition of the distinction between the abstract and the concrete, based on statistics carried out on work of the metaphysical poet, John Donne (1572-1631): Meditations upon Emergent Occasions and The Complete English Poems. I argue that the “concrete” is the result of indirect – implied, unsemiotized – lyricism, a form of lyricism used by the poet when s/he is emotionally implicated in a speech situation. The speaker’s expressivity relies on a temporal decategorization enabling him to (implicitly) claim that generalized (abstract) terms are insufficient to articulate the specificity of his own sentimental experience. Words in –ness – grammatical metaphors – result from a grammatical decategorization, while traditional metaphors derive from a lexical decategorization. Metaphors reflect the affect of the incarnate speaker, who thus repossesses language. Lastly, I understand John Donne’s poetry – hinging on metaphors and comparisons, concrete and abstract elements – as expressing a working of feelings, which is the strongest when the feeling is religious and needs to make up for the absence of the beloved

This study consists of the transcription, classification and analysis of Mário de Andrade\'s marginalia (1893-1945) on Brazilian romantic poetry. The research has been focused on studying the notes made by the Brazilian modernist writer and critic on the books of Gonçalves Dias, Álvares de Azevedo, Casimiro de Abreu, Fagundes Varela and Castro Alves, all of which are part of his personal library kept in IEB-USP. Considered as paratexts, the notes relate to different projects - either finished or unfinished - of studying Brazilian Romanticism, as well as reveal sources for the poet and novelist. It is possible to affirm that Mário de Andrade\'s study of the \"five grand romantics\" is born in the marginalia, nourishes notes, sketches and plans in his archives - manuscripts Amor e medo, Castro Alves and Artigos por escrever - and turns into the published versions of his works - \"Álvares de Azevedo I e II\", \"Mosqueiro nº 2\", \"Álvares de Azevedo I, II e III\", \"Momento\", \"Amor e medo\" and \"Castro Alves\" - without exhausting the original material.

This essay aims to achieve a possible reading of the novel, Memórias Sentimentais de João Miramar, from the theoretical concepts of film, from Eisenstein's theory of montage, once we see the need for a technique of montage in reading the chapters-fragments in this novel. In addition to the theory of montage of Eisenstein s movie, this research will also use the concept of image from Ezra Pound theory of imagism in order to understand the process of condensing the image used in Oswald de Andrade novel. We also analyze the process of metonymy, caused by telegraphic language used in the novel, and the possible presence of cubism in the concatenation of its chapters and juxtaposition-pieces in order to corroborate the theory that Oswald de Andrade anticipates several concepts of modern literary theory, creating, therefore, a real poetry of visuality in his work

This essay studies the relations between geography and literature increasingly important as a theme and his most important purpose is to investigate the lyrical work of Carlos Drummond de Andrade, one of the most important poets of the contemporary Brazilian literature. The selection of Drummond among many other important poets Mario de Andrade, João Cabral de Melo Neto, Manuel Bandeira, Ferreira Gullar and others occurred essentially by the recognition, among his most important critics, of the intense public and social character of his poetry, permeated by a desire of participation and an accurate sensibility towards the world. In addition, the strong association between the poet and his native environment, the state of Minas Gerais and the city of Itabira do Mato Dentro, as well as the strong connection he established with the city of Rio de Janeiro, has been important inspirations for the choice. Due to the extension of his lyrical work, only three books have been selected for the achievement of our aims, Sentimento do Mundo, A rosa do povo (books that represent the most social period of his poetry) and Boitempo II Menino Antigo (a book that represent a regress to Minas Gerais and Itabira). In the initial analysis of the works, we used statistical procedures, applied to the totality of poems, but the essential interpretation has been established by a critical reading of a minor number of poems. However, the subject proposed engenders some controversial questions, and it is important to discuss these questions in order to contribute with the debates. Thus, we are aware that poetry is a minority genre in the researches that relate geography and literature. For several reasons, that we attempt to discuss in the course of this dissertation, geography tends to be more interested in studying novels. This fact led us to establish a history of the approach between the geographical science and the literary art, in order to discuss the causes of this predilection, which have, undeniably, theoretical and methodological basis. It\'s also this fact that lead us to claim Towards a geography of lyric and to dedicate part of this work to a discussion about the definition of the concept of lyric, as well as to the defense of the pertinence of this subject for the geography. The matter of this research and the poetry selected for this work engendered this part of the work, proving how rich can be the approach between lyric and geography.

Résumé :
Expressing diverse sentiments is one of the main purposes of human poetry creation. Existing Chinese poetry generation models have made great progress in poetry quality, but they all neglected to endow generated poems with specific sentiments. Such defect leads to strong sentiment collapse or bias and thus hurts the diversity and semantics of generated poems. Meanwhile, there are few sentimental Chinese poetry resources for studying. To address this problem, we first collect a manually-labelled sentimental poetry corpus with fine-grained sentiment labels. Then we propose a novel semi-supervised conditional Variational Auto-Encoder model for sentiment-controllable poetry generation. Besides, since poetry is discourse-level text where the polarity and intensity of sentiment could transfer among lines, we incorporate a temporal module to capture sentiment transition patterns among different lines. Experimental results show our model can control the sentiment of not only a whole poem but also each line, and improve the poetry diversity against the state-of-the-art models without losing quality.

Résumé :
Bai Juyi’s poetry creation generally pursues the easy style, but there is also a strong side in the easy style. The mutual integration and dialectical unity of easy style and strong strength constitute the diverse features of his poetry. His poems often show pride when writing about the theme of caring for the country and people’s livelihood, strong and broad when writing about the natural landscape, and momentum in poems on things. This heroic spirit is not only reflected in Bai Juyi’s allegorical poems, but also in his leisure poems and sentimental poems. These poems are full of emotion. Poet is good at selecting magnificent and vigorous images, words conveying power and breadth, and often use vigorous images as metaphors. The heroic spirit in Bai Juyi’s poetry is not only influenced by Du Fu, a poet of the prosperous Tang Dynasty, and Liu Yuxi, a poet of the same era, but also closely related to the overall atmosphere of advocating heroism in the poetry circle of the middle Tang Dynasty; The Confucian spirit hidden in his heart and the heroic spirit in his temperament are the internal root of the heroic spirit in Bai poetry.

Résumé :
It is widely believed in the academic circles that the the cardinal drive behind Confucianism’s revival during Mid-Tang’s cultural transformation was the “Ancient-Style Prose Movement” led by Han Yu. Meanwhile, the “New Yuefu Movement” advocated by Bai Juyi is also and expansion of this very “Ancient-Style Prose Movement”. If we re-examine Bai Juyi’s propositions concerning poetry and his own verses, we can find that he highly praised the radition of Confucian poetical education and imitated this canon in his works. Combining studies over Confucian Classics and literature, Bai Juyi reinvented the Confucian theory of human nature and emotion. His emphasis on “Yi Lei” (rhetoric rules and types of poetry) and “Shi Shi” (current affairs) as well as expressions of social and cultural sentiments in poetry, enriched the connotation of “Liu Yi” (Six Formations) in studies over The Book of Songs. And his thoughts do bear the characteristics of Mid- Tang Confucianism Reform.

Résumé :
This study evaluates the impact of using Stemming and Stop-words removal techniques on machine learning classifiers, Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Logistic Regression (LR), in detecting sentiment from Libyan dialect poetry. The lack of Arabic Natural Language Process resources has made sentiment analysis for Arabic a challenging task compared to other languages. A secondary dataset was used and two experiments were conducted, with the first exploring the use of Stemming with Stop-words removal techniques and the second investigating the impact of using Stemming alone. Other preprocessing techniques were applied alongside TF-IDF with a combination of Unigrams and Trigrams during feature extraction. The results show that the Stop-words removal technique may have a negative impact on classifier performance. SVM outperformed LR in both experiments, achieving an accuracy of 71.63%, while LR achieved 70.92% in the second experiment. This study's accuracy outperformed previous research on the topic, achieving 71.63%, compared to 69% in earlier studies.
