Murray, Sarah E. Interrogative sentences. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199681570.003.0005.

Résumé :
Chapter 5 extends this implementation to interrogative sentences, accounting for the various behaviors of evidentials in questions. Not only does this extension provide support for the proposed analysis of evidentials, it provides support for the general semantics for mood. Interrogativemood is treated as a different kind of illocutionary relation, but evidentials still contribute not‐at‐issue content. In combination, they account for a range of properties, including the flip interpretation of evidentials, where the addressee has evidence for one of the answers to the question.

Résumé :
When people use language, they produce and exchange sequences of connected sentences. This article provides an overview of the devices that can be used to organize extended discourses. It also gives a detailed description of discourse level phenomena and incremental interpretation. It explores the various devices (choices of words and word order, forms of reference, use of explicit links) that are used to indicate the structure of an extended discourse and to explain the relationships between its parts, in other words to see how a discourse is broken into segments and how such segments are organized. It deals with the issues involved in identifying and relating the notion that discourses consisting of more than a single sentence are composed of related segments are not contentious, where there is much less agreement.

Résumé :
Acquisition of the passive voice has been studied since the sixties; these earlier results have provided evidence for difficulties in both comprehension and production at 4–5 years of age with differences depending on the shape of sentences and the type of verbs involved. This led to an interpretation expressed in the A-chain deficit hypothesis, whereby children are challenged by movement of the internal argument to the subject position. More recent studies, using new techniques and new insights, have shown an earlier mastery of some passives (age 3), have narrowed down the scope of difficulties focusing more thoroughly on specific sources of challenge and this has promoted new interpretative hypotheses.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
From this chapter the book goes more deeply into one productive and central author: Plutarch. The basis for the book is a scansion of all of Plutarch’s Lives, not just the end of sentences but every small phrase: 2,297 pages, almost 100,000 phrases. For the other half of Plutarch’s work, the philosophical and related writings, the end of every sentence has been scanned. There thus exists a much more abundant body of material for the consideration of Plutarch than for any other Greek author. It is possible to advance from scansion into interpretation. With many detailed examples, and with the help of ancient comments, a connection is indicated between rhythm and emphasis, or attention; thus a rhythmic close draws attention to the words that create it. This can be independently confirmed from context, word-order, etc., and is demonstrated on a large scale in the book as a whole.

Résumé :
If there is a line between semantics and pragmatics, where is it drawn? In this essay I propose that appreciating a sentence is subject to two sets of processes: linguistic (viz., syntactic, semantic) driving the composition of shallow propositions, and unbounded pragmatic (viz., thinking). In section 1, I discuss some guiding assumptions on cognitive architecture, which constrain the nature of linguistic and cognitive representations and processes—and by implication, the conception of the semantics/pragmatics divide I have to offer. The phenomena I examine in section 2, relying on linguistic arguments and experimental evidence, suggest that for certain constructions there is an early “literal” process of interpretation followed by a period of uncertainty, indicating that the early linguistic computations produce a “shallow” semantic representation, not a fully enriched one. The cases I discuss, culminating in metaphors and so-called indeterminate sentences, challenge the prowess of linguistic computations for resolving—even suggesting—interpretations.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Fodor’s The Modularity of Mind (1983) and subsequent work propose a principled distinction between perceptual computations and background knowledge. The chapter argues that language input analyzers produce a minimally—and highly constrained—context-sensitive propositional representation of the sentence, built up from sentence constituents. Compatible with the original Modularity story, it thus takes the output of sentence perception to be a “shallow” representation—though a semantic one. The empirical data discussed bear on alleged cases of sentence indeterminacy and how such cases might be assigned (shallow) semantic representations, interact with context in highly regulated ways, and whether and how they can be enriched. The chapter proposes a semantic level of representation that serves as output of the module and as input to other systems of interpretation, arguing for a form of modularity or encapsulation that is minimally context-sensitive provided that the information from context is itself determined by linguistic principles.

Burke, Megan M. Becoming A Woman. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190608811.003.0010.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The author argues that the exclusion of the indefinite article in Borde and Malovany-Chevallier’s translation of “the famous sentence” in The Second Sex obscures Beauvoir’s phenomenological account of feminine existence. While it is best to understand the recent translation as an informed, interpretative reading of Beauvoir, this essay suggests that reading the end of the sentence as “becoming a woman” undoes the common Anglo-American reading of Simone de Beauvoir as a social constructionist (for example, in the work of Judith Butler). This undoing is important for the way readers become oriented to Beauvoir’s phenomenological commitments. Thus the inclusion of the “a” gestures to a phenomenological sensibility. There is a sphere within the lived experience of femininity that the exclusion cannot capture.

Galves, Charlotte, et Alba Gibrail. Subject inversion in transitive sentences from Classical to Modern European Portuguese. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198747307.003.0009.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This chapter focuses on Classical Portuguese and its change to Modern European Portuguese, bringing to the debate new data concerning transitive sentences. The data are drawn from the Tycho Brahe Parsed Corpus of Historical Portuguese (texts written by Portuguese authors born 1502–1836). It is argued that both constituent order syntax and the information structure functions of word order in transitive sentences (SVO, VSO, VOS) support the characterization of Classical Portuguese as a verb-second language: the verb occupies a high position in clause structure, which makes a high position for post-verbal subjects available as well. This explains why post-verbal subjects in Classical Portuguese are not obligatorily associated with an information focus interpretation, but very frequently receive a familiar topic interpretation. The empirical evidence discussed in this chapter supports the claim that there was a syntactic change from Classical to Modern European Portuguese, rather than a discursive reinterpretation of the same syntax.

Résumé :
This article examines the semantics of “mood”, both in the sense of the opposition among clause types, that is, “sentential/sentence moods,” or “sentential forces”, and in the sense of the distinction between realis and irrealis, or indicative and subjunctive. It begins by considering the most important sentence moods, namely, declaratives, imperatives, interrogatives, exclamatives and optatives. It then discusses the notions of realis and irrealis or indicative and subjunctive. It concludes by underscoring the importance of a study of interpretive effects in elucidating the interaction between semantics and pragmatics, since the semantics of mood appears to depend on a set of contextual clues which arise from different sources and provide non-conceptual input to the pragmatic process of utterance interpretation.

Frascarelli, Mara. The interpretation of pro in consistent and partial null-subject languages. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198815853.003.0009.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This chapter deals with the acceptability and interpretation of referential null subjects (NSs) and compares consistent pro-drop in Italian with equivalent sentences in Finnish (a partial NS language), in different syntactic constructions (matrix, completive, factive, and adverbial clauses). This leads to the formulation of an original proposal that opens new perspectives for future research. Specifically, based on the interpretive judgements of 273 native speakers of Finnish, it is shown that a Topic chain analysis (Frascarelli 2007) can (and should) be assumed in partial NS languages as well, and that ‘partiality’ cannot be explained through narrow syntactic constraints. The Locality requirement is thus re-proposed as an Interface Visibility Condition (IVC), according to which in partial NS languages a pro is preferably interpreted as referring to the closest overt link in a Topic chain. The Topic Criterion is thus proposed as a Macroparameter of NS languages and the necessity of a ‘graded analysis’ ascribed to the IVC (as a Mesoparameter).

Résumé :
According to Frege’s context principle, we must never ask for the meaning of a word in isolation but only in the context of a sentence. This chapter examines the context principle and its role in Frege’s philosophical project, paying special attention to the question of whether the principle provides a way to understand the idea of thin objects. Various analyses of the principle are presented and assessed. It is argued that, appearances notwithstanding, the principle survives into Frege’s Grundgesetze and that this provides valuable information concerning its interpretation. Interpretations based on an ultra-thin conception of reference and the idea of recarving of content are dismissed, and a more promising metasemantic interpretation is canvassed.

Résumé :
The chapter provides an overview of the interaction between quantification and information-structural properties, especially focus, givenness, and topic. While quantification affects truth conditions, information-structuring devices can have an effect on the interpretation of quantificational expressions. After a short introduction to the nature of quantification, the chapter covers the main areas where such effects have been identified, in particular in adverbial quantification, in generic clauses, in conditional sentences, and in sentences with nominal (or determiner) quantification, including intersective determiners and comparative determiners likemost. It reviews different theoretical proposals how this sensitivity to information-structural categories arises, in particular whether they are related to focus or givenness. It also discusses cases in which the quantifier itself is topical, given, or focused.
