Résumé :
Purpose This paper aims to study age differences in responsiveness to shocking prosocial campaigns. It specifically investigates the differences between seniors and young adults regarding the persuasive effect of emotional charity campaigns, the intensity of negative emotions and empathy elicited, the affect-based persuasive process leading to the ad effectiveness and the role of perceived self-efficacy. Design/methodology/approach Two studies are conducted on seniors (n1 = 173; n2 = 118) and young adults (n1 = 170; n2 = 123) exposed to appeals for “Action against Hunger” incorporating various levels of emotional content. Findings The results indicate that seniors are more receptive to emotional campaigns but only for higher emotional ads and only regarding intention to donate. Young adults report lower levels of empathy, and findings do not suggest major age differences in the reported negative emotions after exposure to low or high emotional appeals. The affect-based persuasion differs; young adults are particularly influenced by negative emotions, whereas the persuasive effect on the elderly stems from an empathetic reaction. Self-efficacy moderates the effect of negative emotions only among older participants. Practical implications Social marketers are advised to use vivid and realistic stimuli to reach young people and develop these appeals in social media. For an older target audience, however, marketers are advised to use creative components and media support designed to foster personalisation and proximity. Originality/value This study provides a better understanding of age-related effects on emotional persuasion, and addresses the specificity of prosocial appeals involving responsiveness to the suffering of others.

Résumé :
Background Family caregivers of seniors and disabled adults frequently bear the responsibility of aiding in instrumental activities of daily living and locating resources, often while raising their own families. As the demand for care rises, caregivers may experience declining physical health and increased social and emotional stress compared to their noncaregiving counterparts. This study aims to better understand the journey of unpaid family caregivers and identify opportunities for improvement across organizations, policies, systems, and teams. Research design and methods: A purposive sample of 28 current and former unpaid caregivers of seniors or people with disabilities (26 females and 2 males) participated in four separate focus groups. Recordings were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using open coding. Results Six major themes surrounding the experience of caregiving emerged from the coding process: Ambivalence, “Boiling Point,” Coping, Acknowledgment and Acceptance, Family Dynamics, and Interaction with the System. Focus groups indicated an urgent need to identify and support unpaid caregivers earlier in their trajectory of caring for a senior and to provide consistent, right-time resources over the trajectory of the senior’s lifespan. Discussion and implications: The rational, emotional, and relational components of caregiving represent distinct but overlapping themes within the experience of giving care. Each theme influences another, creating an experience that is complex, fluid, and sensitive to change. The system surrounding caregivers must proactively identify caregivers as equal members of the care team for a senior or disabled adult early in the patient’s disease trajectory.

The Cognitive Stimulation and Emotional Intelligence for Seniors Program (PECI-PM), combines cognitive stimulation with intervention and stimulation of aspects related to emotional intelligence. The purpose of this study was to analyze the emotional intelligence results of the first stage of PECI-PM implementation. A sample of 28 program users who had completed 20 sessions and participated in the two evaluations (pre-post) was employed for this. Emotional Intelligence was evaluated before and after intervention using the Inventario Breve de Inteligencia Emocional para Mayores [Brief Emotional Intelligence Inventory for Senior Citizens] (EQ-i-M20). After intervention with the PECI-PM, improvement was observed in most of the emotional intelligence dimensions (Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Adaptability and Mood). In the Stress Management dimension, there was no change in scores after intervention, which leads us to reconsider the weight of this emotional intelligence dimension in the older population. On the other hand, the role of the Interpersonal dimension, which correlates significantly with other emotional intelligence factors (Intrapersonal and Adaptability) in older people, should be emphasized.

Résumé :
Senior Reach program outcomes for older adults referred for care management and mental health services through a Gatekeeper model were examined in this study and compared with the Spokane Gatekeeper model. The two programs were compared for seniors served on service variables and outcome ratings for isolation, depression, and functioning. Approximately 41% of seniors served by both programs were referred by nontraditional sources: community gatekeepers. Findings indicate that individuals served by the Senior Reach program demonstrated significant improvement in reduction of isolators (such as social isolation), improved functioning, increased optimism about the future, increased positive activities with others, decreased emotional disturbance, and improvements on the Geriatric Depression Scale. Additional program comparisons and findings are discussed. Findings for the Senior Reach program demonstrate that the gatekeeper approach to training community partners is effective in finding at-risk seniors and meeting their needs, resulting in positive impacts on their lives.

Résumé :
Emotion regulation in old age was found to be more efficient; seniors seem to focus less on the negative aspects of experiences. Here, we ask, do older individuals regulate their emotions more efficiently or are they numb to the physiological changes that modulate these emotions? Interoception, the perception of physical feelings, influences a person’s mood, emotions, and sense of well-being, and was hardly tested among older adults. We examined the awareness of physiological changes (physiological arousal—blood pressure and heart rate) of 47 older adults, compared to 18 young adults, and their subjective reports of emotional experiences while viewing emotional stimuli. Interoception was decreased in old age. Blood pressure medications had a partial role in this reduction. Moreover, interoception mediated emotional experience, such that low interoception led to lower experiences of changes in physiological arousal. These findings may account for the emotional changes in old age, suggesting a decline in sensitivity with age, which leads to a positive interpretation of information.

Résumé :
ABSTRACTBackground:Foreign domestic workers (FDWs) play an important role in long-term caregiving of seniors at home. However, how FDWs cope with the caregiving demands, the dynamic interaction between familial and FDW caregivers and its impact on care recipients remain largely un-explored. Existing caregiver interventions mainly target familial caregivers; little assistance is available for FDW caregivers. This study explores FDWs’ challenges, coping strategies, and the support they need in caring for seniors. Methods:FDWs were recruited from a geriatric ward and outpatient clinic of a tertiary hospital in Singapore. Qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted with 25 FDWs caring for frail seniors and five healthcare staff. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results:FDWs were from Indonesia, Philippines, and Myanmar. Nineteen cared for seniors with dementia (SWDs). We derived six subthemes, clustered into three salient themes: two described social support to FDWs by the senior's family members, two described their coping strategies, and two described their job satisfaction. Those who cared for SWDs faced more difficulties. We derived two family models of care: FDW-centered family dynamics, where family members rely on FDWs to perform most duties, causing poor impact on seniors’ well-being and team-based family dynamics, where family members and FDWs share the caregiving burden, resulting in better impact on seniors’ well-being.Conclusion:FDWs face significant challenges in eldercare. Improving FDWs’ access to training courses in eldercare, providing them with more emotional support, engaging employers to create healthy caregiving spaces at home, and improving access to senior care services can be helpful.

Résumé :
Emotional Intelligence (EI) fosters positive synergies for an intergenerational match in business. The main goal of this contribution is to investigate the components of ЕI for selected young people and seniors and to formulate recommendations for their successful intergenerational business cooperation in Slovakia. The 4-component instrumental model for EI in business and the “Emotional Intelligence in Business” questionnaire were used to construct an average EI profile for different generations. 157 young people (Generation Z) and 236 seniors (Baby Boomers generation) from Slovakia participated in the research. The statistical study of the components of EI was conducted using unadjusted and adjusted univariate tests for repeated measures and multiple comparisons. The results of both tests were identical and therefore considered robust. The research confirms that EI in business increases with the respondent’s age: investigated seniors demonstrate a higher level of EI than selected young people in three components. At the same time, findings show that seniors are more focused on self-awareness, while the young are more empathic. The research considerably deepens the understanding of the potential contributions of different generations in business collaboration and benefits social unity and sustainable economic development.

Résumé :
An emerging topic in robot design and scholarly research is socially assistive robots (SAR) for senior citizens. Compared to robots in other sectors, SARs can augment their assistive-utilitarian functions by offering social, emotional, and cognitive support to seniors. This study draws upon interviews with 45 senior citizens to understand this group’s expectations for human-robot interactions (HRI) and their anticipated needs for robots. Our grounded theory analysis suggests that senior citizens expect robots to meet three types of needs: physical, informational, and interactional. Furthermore, they seek assurances that they will have complete control over interactions with robots. Findings show that seniors’ mental models about robots are shaped by their recent experiences with advanced communications technologies and mediated representations of robots in popular culture. Findings are discussed in light of practical design considerations and two theoretical perspectives.

Résumé :
Chronic conditions and lifestyle behaviors have a detrimental influence on the quality of life for seniors because of physical disability and emotional concerns. This study aimed to assess the influence of chronic illness, smoking, and alcohol use on quality of life among Thai seniors. A cross-sectional study was conducted in three communities, selected purposively from the North, Northeast, and Central regions, and 1278 senior participants were recruited. Binary logistic regression was used to predict the influence of factors on quality of life with adjusted covariates. Most participants were aged 60–70 years and married, earned 500–1,000 Baht/month (US $17–$35), had one chronic illness, and were nonsmokers and nondrinkers. Surprisingly, there appeared to be no link between chronic conditions and quality of life. Current drinkers were more likely to have a high quality of life, with Odds Ratios of 2.16 for men and 2.73 for women. Seniors of both genders who were current drinkers were more likely to accept death and dying and this improved their quality of life. Social participation in alcohol consumption may encourage seniors to share their concerns about death and dying and eventually accept this as a foundation of life.

Résumé :
This study extends our knowledge on the role of informal caregivers of seniors and the impact of this role on presenteeism and absenteeism at work. Based on the conservation of resources theory, this article seeks to gain insights into the mechanisms and antecedents of presenteeism and absenteeism among employees who are also informal caregivers of seniors. Specifically, this article argues that family–work conflict and emotional exhaustion mediate the relationship between the informal caregiver’s role, presenteeism, and absenteeism. Quantitative data (questionnaire) from this cross-sectional study were collected from 915 informal caregivers of seniors from 8 Canadian organizations. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was undertaken using IBM SPSS AMOS 28.0 to test all hypotheses. Informal caregivers of seniors who need to coordinate and organize healthcare are at a higher risk of experiencing family–work conflict. Family–work conflict experienced by informal caregivers subsequently leads to emotional exhaustion, presenteeism, and absenteeism. Because informal caregiving of seniors is likely to increase in coming years for many workers, organizations must be aware of the possible consequences of this role on work productivity. This study shows that not all tasks of informal caregivers of older adults lead to presenteeism and absenteeism through family–work conflict and emotional exhaustion. This study is innovative because, to our knowledge, no study of informal caregivers of older adults has examined the effect of different tasks in this role on presenteeism and absenteeism.

Résumé :
Seniors are usually perceived as an unattractive segment, mostly due to their limited spending power. In Slovakia, the number of seniors has continuously been increasing. The population has been growing older. In Europe, more than a quarter of the population is expected to be aged 65 years or older by 2050. That is the main reason why we have to understand the consumer behaviour and decision-making processes of senior consumers. The presented paper deals with the consumer behaviour of seniors on the Slovak market of cow’s milk since it is the most commonly consumed type of milk in Slovakia. Opinions of nutrition specialists differ on whether it is beneficial or not for humans to consume milk. However, in general, milk is considered to be an essential component of the diet not only for children but also for adults and especially for seniors because of its high nutrition value. Milk and dairy products should be a daily part of the seniors’ diet. Since older people no longer have the necessary enzyme (lactase) to break down milk sugar (lactose), it is recommended to consume milk products that no longer contain milk sugar, but that lactic acid is produced by fermentation. Sour milk products such as curd, yoghurt or kefir have a beneficial effect on stomach, intestines and also the immune system. Long-term insufficiency of calcium intake causes osteoporosis – a disease that manifests itself in bone loss and structural disorders. It leads to increased fracturing of the bones and thus an increased risk of health complications resulting from there. This study explores senior consumers’ preferences for milk and their decision-making strategies on the market of cow’s milk. The study is oriented primarily on visual cues catching the attention of consumers. Anonymous survey was conducted on a sample of 470 senior respondents (210 males and 260 females) aged 61 – 84. Using selected psychological tools and a short questionnaire it was found out that Slovak seniors prefer traditional motives and bright colours on the milk packaging, they highly prioritise price over quality of milk products and in comparison with young adults, they are loyal to chosen products or brands. Seniors who score higher on the scale of neuroticism personality trait state that the packaging of milk products is significant for their decisions. Seniors with higher emotional stability tend to experiment more on the market of milk. Keywords cow’s milk, seniors, consumer behaviour, packaging, persuading techniques.

Résumé :
This study examined the emotional expressions and social support provided to senior YouTubers by analyzing comments on their content. First, LDA topic modeling revealed that these comments were categorized into three distinct topics. Second, we extracted 751 adjectival expressions occurring at least once within the entire comment dataset. Notably, younger viewers predominantly conveyed positive sentiments towards senior YouTubers, using words such as “nice,” “cool,” “cute,” and “adorable.” Negative sentiments directed at seniors such as “dislike,” “weird,” “stuffy,” and “dirty were comparatively rare. Finally, we extracted expressions of online social support within the comments and identified four components of such support: respectful-emotional support, companionship support, material support, and informational support. Based on the above results, this study has uncovered insights into addressing generational conflicts and has proposed opportunities and implications for fostering a harmonious coexistence between older and younger generations within society.

This study examined the prevalence, types, and perceived impact of intergenerational programs in schools. Programs involving senior volunteers assisting children, or children participating in activities with older people were considered. Of the schools reached, 47% reported intergenerational programming. Thirty-three schools in the Tel-Aviv region participated in the study. Data were collected from 85 seniors, 26 teachers, and 20 coordinators. Assessments included program characteristics, program preparation, and perceived benefits and difficulties. Both programs were reported to have beneficial effects for seniors and to benefit children in the academic, social, and emotional domains. However, programs appeared to attract different types of volunteers and different degrees of volunteer commitment. Findings suggest that there is a need to pay additional attention to both participants’ specific requests and needs and to the allocation of resources to improve the design and implementation of intergenerational programs.

Résumé :
The adverse effects of the pandemic on the emotional state of older adults have fuelled the debate regarding their digital exclusion and the need to promote their genuine inclusion. During this period, technology and technology-mediated learning have improved the quality of life of older adults in many ways. The purpose of this research is to identify the socio-emotional role of technology-assisted learning programmes for seniors ever since the onset of the pandemic. The results reveal a positive impact on the emotional well-being of older adults from these forms of learning. Participants highlight the value of intergenerational socialisation enabled by these learning formats in the process of self-learning and reciprocal learning that takes place on platforms such as YouTube and WhatsApp. However, a preference among seniors for in-person learning has also been observed, which is sometimes linked to a certain level of technological anxiety.

The purpose of this study was to assess the reproducibility of scores on an instrument designed to measure physical therapy students’ burnout. Physical therapy students (28 juniors and 28 seniors) completed an adapted educators version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory on two occasions within a week interval. At each testing session, a separate score was obtained for each student for the three (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment) subscales of the instrument. These scores, analyzed with a two-factor repeated-measures analysis of variance, indicated a significant difference in the personal accomplishment score between the junior and senior students during the two time frames. Scheffé post hoc tests showed that the junior students reported higher personal accomplishment affect at both testing sessions than the senior students. Both junior and senior students reported higher personal accomplishment at retest than at baseline testing. A test-retest reliability coefficient of .850 was obtained for the Depersonalization subscale; .907 and .715 were obtained for the Emotional Exhaustion and Personal Accomplishment subscales, respectively.

Changes caused by aging manifest themselves in physical, cognitive, emotional and social areas. Dance and movement therapy ensures that it is possible to work with a client in all four areas – promote physical activity, stimulate cognitive functions, activate emotional component and encourage social interactions. The aim of this research was to create a mixed methods systematic review on dance and movement therapy (DMT) for seniors, to assess the methodological quality of included studies, analyse structural and content indicators of applied DMT interventions, their effect and experience of seniors gained during dance and movement therapy sessions. Findings suggest that the methodological quality of studies varies from high to low. Data acquired by meta-analysis indicates a statistically significant reduction of depression scores for research (DMT) group in comparison to control group (95% CI: -3.74 to -2.52, total effect Z = 10.05 (P < 0.00001)). Qualitative data shows changes in all four areas as well as provides dance and movement therapists with a framework for different client groups such as individuals with depression, Parkinson’s disease, etc. Further research on seniors’ experiences is needed.

Résumé :
ABSTRACTThis paper examines social interaction among seniors in Bermuda, the relationship of various interaction variables with psychological or emotional well-being, and caregiving. The data come from the first ever social science survey conducted among seniors in this country. The findings are compared with selected industrialised countries. Bermudian seniors have strong social ties, somewhat stronger than have been reported in other developed nations. Overwhelmingly, perceived health is related to life satisfaction and functional disability is related to self-esteem among Bermudian seniors. The lack of relationship with social support may well be due to the lack of variation in social support, with virtually everyone having strong social ties. Informal assistance is strong in Bermuda as has been demonstrated for seniors elsewhere. Similarly, the predictors of informal assistance were no surprise, including functional disability, perceptions of health, and having a household member. That is, Bermudian seniors were somewhat distinctive, particularly in their strong social ties, but otherwise appear to be quite similar to seniors in other developed nations. Their geographical isolation and relative small size are believed to be related to their strong social network.

Résumé :
The article presents the results of the theoretical and methodological substantiation and empirical verification of the approach to investigation the changes in elderly’s personality features during postemployment period. Theoretical analysis revealed that professional activity should be considered as the significant predictor of differences in perception and adaptation of the elderly. To meet the purpose of the study the sample of research participants was split into two subgroups (employed and unemployed seniors) to reveal changes in their personality features. Results of the empirical study confirmed the significant differences in dispositional traits and other personality features among groups of employed and unemployed seniors (adaptation, self-perception, acceptation of other people, internality, dominance, time orientation, autonomy, spontaneity, self– understanding, autosympathy, sociability, flexibility in communication, self-actualization appeared to be higher among employed seniors comparing to unemployed). Employed elderlies also showed higher level on such scales as: extraversion, agreeableness, self-control, emotional stability, expressiveness in comparison to the group of unemployed ones. The group of unemployed seniors tend to experience higher level of emotional comfort, but at the same time they are characterized by high level of anxiety, frustration, loneliness, aggression and rigidity. The multiple correlation-regression analysis yielded the following hierarchy of the most informative aspects of the elderly’s adaptation. They include: spontaneity and self-realization. The findings open up new prospects for identifying the potential personality precursors of adaptation of the elderly people.

Résumé :
The goal of the authors of this empirical study is to present the results of research on the effectiveness of the intervention program focused on co-educational activities of children and seniors living in social service homes. Program creators and implementers are convinced that the interaction of children and seniors, having different forms and contexts (communication, educational, sports, artistic, work, relaxation, etc.), has the potential to influence inner experience and its subsequent manifestation of behaviour in all participants. Used research tools (Child Mental Health Problems Questionnaire, Rohner’s Personality Assessment Questionnaire for Children, Satisfaction with Life Scale for Old Age) pointed out that the program had a facilitating and developing effect on some psychological characteristics related to the quality of life of participants. In children, there was a reduction in symptoms of problem behaviour and a higher rate of adequate emotional manifestations. In the elderly, there was an increased level of overall subjective satisfaction and reduction of negative emotional manifestations.

Emotional Intelligence dimensions of motivation as well as social and communication skills were associated with perceived entry-level employability. Feedback from internship hosts was the measure of association for 77 college juniors or seniors between the ages of 18 and 22 (49 women, 28 men), enrolled in a one-semester communications internship. Chi squared supported the hypothesis that interns scoring high on emotional intelligence are more likely to be considered for employment by the internship host than those scoring low. Given replication of this work applications for an internship curriculum can be identified.

Résumé :
Assisted living is a fast-growing living option for seniors who require residence-based activities for maintaining mental and physical health. Guided equine interactions may benefit seniors, so an on-site equine program was started at Hacienda at the River senior living community. For research purposes, twenty-four residents and associates, aged fifty-five or over, consented to physiological measurements before, during and after four guided sessions of stroking one of three horses for 10 min over 4–6 weeks. Heart rate variability (HRV) was measured simultaneously in humans and horses during interactions. We hypothesized that human heart rate (HR) and HRV would increase during stroking and HRV power would shift toward the very low frequency (VLF) range common in horses, indicative of healthy function. During stroking, human HR increased (p < 0.05) but HRV (SDRR) and %VLF of HRV power did not change. Diastolic blood pressure (DBP), an exploratory measure, significantly increased after stroking, consistent with arousal. Two horses showed no significant changes in HR or HRV, but one relaxed. Sixteen horse–human pairs demonstrated synchronized HRV peak frequencies during sessions, suggestive of social connection. Participants used more positive than negative words describing their experience during exit interviews (p < 0.05). These data show that horses animate seniors without causing emotional stress and provide opportunities for social bonding.

Résumé :
Introduction Analysis of psycho-emotional aspects in children suffering from spinal deformities demonstrates a high level of dysfunctionality in mechanisms of personal and intra-family adjustment. There is a paucity of publications on the problem. Objectives included multidimensional psychometric assessment of parents' attitude toward children with spinal deformities and the correlation with psychological characteristics of patients. Material and methods Results of a survey performed for 45 patients who underwent operative treatment for spinal deformities of different etiology and their parents were reviewed. The patients' age ranged from 7 months to 17 years inclusive. Validated questionnaires used as survey tools included the "DOBR" questionnaire, FACES-3, SDQ and DERS. Patients were assigned to two age-related groups, Juniors aged from 7 months to 6 years inclusive and Seniors aged from 7 to 17 years inclusive. An intergroup and correlation analyses were performed in the study groups. Results Multidimensional analysis showed that parents of children with spinal deformities tend to downgrade the severity of the child's condition neglecting postoperative prescription standards that was more common for Seniors (p = 0.001). Parents look toward the maximum intra-family cohesion but do not have the necessary knowledge to achieve it. Emotional problems and social adjustment difficulties are more common for Seniors (p = 0.031). Conclusion Lack of adequate parental knowledge about the child's disease is the key factor behind the imbalance in intra-family functioning. Therapeutic intervention and parent management training can facilitate to psycho-emotional well-being in the family and postoperative improvements for maladapting children with spinal deformities.

Background and objective: This study aimed to develop agro-healing program to enable the elderly to improve cognitive health, and to determine impacts on cognitive, emotional, and physical function through applying the program to seniors at welfare facilities. Methods: The agro-healing program was developed in consultation with experts on material selection, activity types, physical exercises, and evaluation methods. The program was conducted for seniors who used Jeonju Y Senior Welfare Center from May to August 2022. The total of 19 participants in the program were divided into 9 in the control group and 10 in the experimental group.A agro-healing program with 12 activities was given to the experimental group. As a pre- and post-test, the results of a cognitive screening test, short form of geriatric depression scale, and physical fitness test for the elderly were compared. For the experimental group, their activity preference was surveyed. The results were analyzed using SAS 9.4.Results: The agro-healing program to promote cognitive health did not show significant results in terms of differences in mean scores for cognitive, emotional, and physical area between the control and experimental groups in the pre- and post-test. However, through this study, it was found that the subjects preferred interesting activities with work stages using plants. Conclusion: A cognitive health promotion program for the elderly was developed and applied. Although the effectiveness of program was not proven, it is expected that activities preferred by the elderly can be used as basic data in agro-healing programs for the cognitive health of the elderly.

Résumé :
The world's population is aging rapidly; by 2025, the elderly, or anyone over 60, are expected to account for 22% of the total population. Even though older adults participate in fewer regenerative activities, the rise in age-related illnesses and impairments puts them at greater risk. This has a number of detrimental social and economic effects on individuals as well as society at large. Methods: A review of the literature was done in the light of these potential problems to locate empirical studies assessing the health and well-being of senior citizens. Results: Empirical data retrieved from multiple studies indicates that seniors who live outside of institutions have higher levels of emotional well-being than those who live in them. This is because the former has access to better medical care, social connections, family care, and financial independence. Older adults without substantial financial resources experience abuse, are left behind, and are no longer included in family decision-making or selection procedures. For this subset of the population, spiritual care is recommended. It follows that seniors should continue exercising and participating in physical activity at the recommended level.

Résumé :
In today’s modern world, emotional intelligence (EI) has a strong connection in the work environment and it is considered to be one of the key factors in the well-functioning of institutions, especially of educational ones. The main aim of this study is to identify, whether the directors of the schools of the pre-high educational system in Albania are aware of the concept of emotional intelligence, are trained and if they implement it in their leading style, in order to achieve an overall success in schools. The study also aims to identify the differences between new and senior principals in using EI. The research methodology is quantitative, 183 questionnaires were filled in by teachers in 11 different schools of the pre high educational institutions in Tirana. The instrument used consists of 40 standard statements that cover all five characteristics of the emotional intelligence: self-awareness, self-control, motivation, empathy and social skills, by analyzing the level of agreement in a 1-5 Likert scale. The study has shown that principals and teachers of the pre high educational system in Albania have no knowledge on emotional intelligence and as a result they do not implement it. The principals do possess some elements of emotional intelligence as a part of their soft skills, but they are not aware of them and do not use them in increasing the teachers’ work satisfaction. Also, there is no difference in the usage of emotional intelligence between young and senior principals, apart from the fact that the seniors have better developed soft skills. This would help them to come closer to the characteristics of emotional intelligence. The results of the study imply some recommendations for policy makers, school’s principals and mentor teachers in increasing the use of emotional intelligence in the pre high educational system in Albania. The results confirm the necessity to train the principals about the latest news in the field of education, ethics, communication and leadership with a focus on raising leadership within the focus of Emotional Intelligence. The ministry of Education, Sport and Youth should design policies for the professional development of leaders and teachers in accordance with new management strategies such as emotional intelligence.

Résumé :
When the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, the elderly were identified as a vulnerable group due to their significantly higher risk of severe or fatal outcome of COVID-19. Senior residential facilities were heavily affected and in an effort to constrain the spread of the virus, many organized enrichment programs were paused. This was a concern to many as clinical literature in the fields of Occupational Therapy and Art Therapy has found that art enrichment courses, including textile arts and crafts activities, are effective in managing excess time and coping with loneliness and other emotional challenges. The purpose of this research is to understand how senior residents engaged with textile arts and crafts independently and through a time of increased stress. Due to socializing restrictions, the pandemic provided a unique opportunity to examine the benefits and challenges seniors face when working with textile crafts. Twelve interviews with senior participants were conducted and analyzed to locate key themes related to their experiences. Results of this analysis have applications for enrichment programming in senior housing facilities, design planning for senior housing, and in shaping further clinical research on the potential benefits of textile crafts.

Résumé :
Purpose – This study aims to extend emotional labor theories to the customer outcomes by examining a theoretical model of how emotional labor performed by the service worker affects customer satisfaction in a mediated way. Design/methodology/approach – Structural equation modeling analyses partially support for our hypotheses from 282 dyadic survey data [i.e. service interactions customers (seniors) and service employees (caregivers)] from a home caregiver firm in South Korea. Findings – The results of our study found that employee’s emotional regulation strategies of deep acting and surface acting differentially affect customer satisfaction, and that employee’s job satisfaction mediates the relationship between employee’s emotional regulation strategies and customer satisfaction. More specifically, the relationship between surface acting and customer satisfaction is fully mediated by employee’s job satisfaction, whereas the relationship between deep acting and customer satisfaction is partially mediated by employee’s job satisfaction. Originality/value – Our study is the first to provide an empirical test of how employee job satisfaction mediates the relationship between employee emotional labor and customer satisfaction in service interactions. This research sheds light on the crucial role of employee job satisfaction that can be an important consideration to boost service quality and customer satisfaction by facilitating employee emotional labor.

Résumé :
Quality of life is an extraordinarily multidimensional term. It includes both objective and subjective factors. This article reviews the quality of life of an extremely sensitive group – people over the age of 65, based on data from the pan-European SHARE survey (Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe). The survey revealed the disparities in the quality of life of seniors regarding material, health, social and emotional dimensions in 16 European countries. According to the European survey of the evaluation of the quality of life of seniors, those living in Western and Northern European countries are more satisfied with the quality of their life. Generally, it has become apparent that quality of life is interlinked with the institutional framework of the country, family support and individual approaches. Countries in Southern and Eastern Europe have lower values in individual dimensions as well as in the aggregate quality of life index.

Résumé :
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to answer fundamental questions on the perceived value of active senior visitors (55+ years old) in the context of cultural heritage sites, when using immersive technologies, conceptualizing technological experience by illustrating an extended space in the pre, during and post phases of visits. Furthermore, it will reveal a better understanding of digital transformation opportunities and risks in the tourism industry and its related sectors regarding active senior travelers and it will further provide some insights and tools that are required to follow. Design/methodology/approach Since the authors are studying a population that is thus far not fluent in the means of digital opportunities, the authors will conduct two semi-structured interviews before and after visits to the museums in order to lower the level of emotional bias responses. Moreover, observations of the participants’ interaction with technological devices will be assessed during their visit. Findings Current findings enrich the theoretical perspective of perceived value. First, they extend our knowledge on the perceived consumers’ value of active senior visitors in the application of immersive technologies pertaining to archeological museums. They also shed new light on the different dimensions of the perceived value (epistemic value, functional value, hedonic value and social value) of active senior visitors concerning museum transformation. Third, they provide an integrative framework for extending the boundaries of the museum technological visit experience, linking the pre-, during-, and post-visit phases. Research limitations/implications Having a longitudinal study that evaluates the same population of seniors over a longer period would enhance our understanding of perception and adoption behavior in non-users. It entails the dimensions that are necessary from a theoretical and managerial point of view, thus contributing to strategic planning for museum managers who are planning on going digital in the coming years aiming at creating further value and satisfaction for their active senior visitors to cultural heritage sites. Originality/value The majority of research concerning technological developments and experiences to date has focused on holistic views studying different stakeholders’ perspectives or on digital natives’ perception regarding museum digital transformation. However, only few studies have evaluated the perceived value of active senior travelers and their overall satisfaction when visiting museums that became digital.

Résumé :
Background Intergenerational exercise possesses the potential to becoming an innovative strategy for promoting physical activity in seniors and children. Although this approach has gained attraction within the last decade, controlled trials on physical and psychosocial effects have not been performed yet. Methods Sixty-eight healthy preschool children (age: 4.9 y (SD 0.7)) and 47 residential seniors (age: 81.7 y (7.1)) participated in this five-armed intervention study. All participants were assigned to either an intergenerational (IG), peer (PG) or a control group (CON). Children were tested on gross motor skills (TGMD-2), jump performance and handgrip strength. Social-emotional skills questionnaires (KOMPIK) were assessed by kindergarten teachers. Seniors performed the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), including gait speed. Arterial stiffness parameters were also examined. Questionnaires assessing psychosocial wellbeing were filled in with staff. IG and PG received one comparable exercise session a week lasting 45 minutes for 25-weeks. CON received no intervention. Measurements were performed before and after the intervention. Results In children: IG improved all measured physical parameters. When adjusted for baseline values, large effects were observed in favor of IG compared to CON in TGMD-2 (Cohen’s d=0.78 [0.33;1.24]) and in handgrip strength (d = 1.07 [0.63;1.51]). No relevant differences were found in KOMPIK between groups (−0.38<d≤0.14). In seniors: IG showed moderate to very large improvements in all main physical performance (0.61<d≤2.53) and psychosocial parameters (0.89<d≤1.20) compared to CON. Conclusion IG children showed large benefits in motor skills compared to CON while IG seniors benefit especially in psychosocial wellbeing and functional mobility necessary for everyday life. Intergenerational exercise is comparable and in certain dimensions superior to peer group exercise and a promising strategy to integratively improve mental health as well as physical fitness in preschool children and residential seniors.

Purpose. To estimate the independent effect of cigarette smoking on respiratory tract symptoms and health status indicators among high school seniors. Design. Consolidated data sets from one-time cross-sectional survey designs. Setting. High schools in the United States, 1982–1989. Sample. A total of 26,504 high school seniors, with an 83% response rate. Measures. Odds ratios for respiratory tract symptoms and health status indicators for cigarette smokers compared with nonsmokers, while controlling for sex, socioeconomic status, and use of other drugs. Results. High school seniors who were regular cigarette smokers and who began smoking by grade nine were significantly more likely than never smokers to report shortness of breath when not exercising (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 2. 7), coughing spells (OR = 2.1), productive cough (OR = 2.4), and wheezing or gasping (OR = 2.6). These smokers were also more likely to have seen a doctor or other health professional for an emotional or psychologic complaint (OR = 3.0) and to rate their overall health as poorer than average (OR = 2.4). We found strong dose-response relationships for most outcome measures. Conclusions. Cigarette smoking among high school seniors is associated with respiratory tract symptoms and poorer overall physical health and may be a marker for underlying mental health problems. Smoking prevention activities directed at adolescents should include information on the early adverse health consequences of cigarette smoking.

The article aims to describe the medium-term impacts of a major earthquake event (Chile, February 27, 2010) on 26 seniors. The authors adopted a qualitative study approach. Data obtained using the Impact of Event Scale–Revised (IES-R) show the presence of manifestations of posttraumatic stress in the majority of respondents. In addition, data collected in interviews demonstrated a progressive deterioration of the health of respondents over a period of 4 years following the disaster. Seniors are particularly vulnerable to the effects of material loss, emotional stress, and postdisaster health complications. These impacts are exacerbated by low economic status. Furthermore, broader research is necessary involving elderly living in poverty who have survived natural disasters and others without such experiences, in order to better identify and differentiate between health complications associated with exposure to disaster events and those linked more strictly with natural aging processes.

Résumé :
The emotional functioning of older people depends on many factors. Diverse and rich activity every day seems to be very important. Undertaking a large number of activities at an elderly age and fulfilling oneself in social roles (also ones newly started) is a condition for efficient functioning, life satisfaction, well-being and health. Older people are at risk of social exclusion, being unnecessary for others or even being a burden on one’s surroundings. Hence, support and inclusion programs for various tasks and activities become extremely important. The aim of the presented research was to present proposals and evaluate the effects of a program dedicated to seniors, which was to improve their quality of life, psychophysical and social health. The program involved 50 seniors from 2 different support centers, including 43 women and 7 men, average age 77.51 ± 9.51. The assessment used the SUPIN questionnaire (Positive and Negative Feelings Scale), MMSE (Mini-Mental State Examination) and the VAS pain scale. The obtained results confirmed the beneficial effect of the proposed activation program on the psychophysical health of the respondents. All subjects increased their level of positive emotions, while the level of negative ones decreased (p <0.05), hand functionality and general well-being improved, back and pain significantly decreased.

Aim. The aim of the study was to determine the level of motor activity, functional and motion fitness of seniors above the age of 60 as well as to examine the relationship between physical activity and the level of depression in this group of people. Material and methods. The study covered a group of 50 participants above the age of 60. The Seven-day Physical Activity Recall, ADL, IADL and GDS scales, as well as the Tinetti test and the authors’ specially designed questionnaire were used. Results. Analysis of the results showed a relationship between age, education as well as chronic diseases and the level of undertaken physical activity. A significant relationship was found between the level of activity and functional and motion performance as well as the emotional state of the elderly. There was no relationship between gender, place of residence and self-assessment of health state and the level of physical activity. The most important motivating factor for performing physical activity in seems to be the improvement of well-being, and the most frequently indicated barrier, is state of health. Conclusions. The level of physical activity is related to functional and locomotor fitness and the emotional state of the elderly. There is a correlation between age, education and the occurrence of chronic diseases and the level of physical activity. The most important motivating factor for undertaking activity seems to be the improvement of well-being, the most frequently indicated barrier is state of health.

The purposes of this study were to identify trajectory groups of frequent marijuana use during emerging adulthood; distinguish among trajectory groups according to demographic and lifestyle characteristics; and examine how the trajectory groups relate to behavioral, attitudinal, and social-emotional correlates over time. National panel data from the Monitoring the Future study were used: 18 cohorts of high school seniors (classes of 1977–1994) were followed biennially through age 24. Frequent marijuana use was defined as 3+ occasions of use in past month and/or 20 to 40+ occasions in past year. Based on four waves of complete longitudinal data (N=19,952), six frequent marijuana use trajectory groups were identified: chronic, decreased, increased, fling, rare, and abstain. Categorical analyses revealed trajectory group differences in demographic and lifestyle characteristics at senior year and age 24. The trajectory groups varied significantly in longitudinal patterns of other substance use, problem behaviors, and well-being.

(2017) noted that “[i]mproving FDWs' access to training courses in eldercare, providing them with more emotional support, engaging employers to create healthy caregiving spaces at home, and improving access to senior care services can be helpful.” This finding is very interesting. In fact, FDW service is common in several countries and approved for usefulness (Østbye et al., 2013). Of interest, the FDWs are usually from the poor developing countries. It is no doubt that the FDWs usually have low education level. Therefore, the education for them has to be carefully considered. We would like to share ideas from Thailand, where several FDW from nearby countries are currently employed. At present, there are many local schools offering inexpensive short course training on home care for elderly people and this becomes a popular course for FDW to attend. Nowadays, before employment, the employers usually ask for certification for verification of the proficiency of the FDW.

Résumé :
The prevalence of cognitive impairment increases with age, particularly impacting seniors as it advances to severe dementia. These conditions pose significant challenges for afflicted individuals and their caregivers, manifesting as profound impacts on daily life and imposing considerable emotional and financial burdens on families. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) denotes an intermediate stage between normal cognitive function and dementia, signifying a decline in cognitive abilities while maintaining normal daily life activities. Identifying MCI early in seniors within the community is pivotal to preventing further cognitive decline. In response to the challenge of traditional cognitive function assessments, which require trained healthcare professionals and take 20-30 minutes per case, we introduce "Dementia U-Care," an innovative app designed to assist community health workers in screening, monitoring, and collecting cognitive data. Accessible on mobile devices, it allows seniors to respond through drawing and writing, simplifying data collection compared to paper forms. Dementia U-Care streamlines preliminary assessments, empowering professionals and reducing fatigue and errors. This tool enables prompt screening, minimizing test-related stress, with an average testing time of 13.06 minutes, ranging from 9 to 20 minutes. The evaluation indicates high satisfaction with Dementia U-Care, with a mean score of 9.37±1.12. Users are generally pleased with its quality and user experience, demonstrating its effectiveness in meeting their needs and providing a positive experience.

Résumé :
Aging brings several significant changes in a person's life, and one of the main challenges older people face is loneliness. Loneliness can have a profound impact on the mental and physical well-being of seniors, increasing the risk of mental illness, lowering quality of life, and even accelerating the aging process. This study aims to determine the relationship between family social support and loneliness in older people. The research approach used is a quantitative research approach with correlative descriptive. The population in this study was 42 more senior people, all of whom were elderly. The sample in this study was 42 older adults who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. In this study, the technique used was the total sampling technique. The results of statistical tests conducted with Chi-square obtained a p-value of 0.1000, informational support p-value of 0.758; reward support a p-value of 0.115, emotional support p-value of 0.767, instrumental support can be concluded that social support from family plays a vital role in influencing the level of loneliness in older people. Families that provide emotional, physical, and social support can help create a supportive environment, strengthen social bonds, and reduce the risk of loneliness in later stages

Résumé :
Abstract Successful aging (Rowe & Kahn, 1997) is conditioned by aspiration to be active and by the ability to maintain social relations. Activity improves the emotional lives of seniors and is associated with a reduction of some symptoms of aging. Our study verifies if the number of activities (informal and solitary) is associated with quality of life and whether subjective age may be a mediator of this relationship. The 136 seniors above 60 were tested by our authorial scale of activity and the WHOQOL-BRIEF. The results showed that older persons’ higher quality of life levels are related not only to the number of activities undertaken, but also to the frequency that these activities are engaged in. The mediating role of subjective age in relation to one’s activities and quality of life was also indicated, which, concerning general quality of life, turned out to be a cooperative suppression.

Résumé :
Loneliness - a subjective, emotional state of feeling social isolation and being cut off from others. It comes and goes when life situation changes. In the case of chronic loneliness, it is experienced no matter what the circumstances. Loneliness functions in the temporal (time) dimension: it can be continuous, but it can also occur temporarily. The feeling of loneliness occurs in situations where the emotional bond is broken or in the case of isolation. The aim of this article is to address the problem of seniors' loneliness which is caused by the limitations of the Covid-19 pandemic. The participants of the study are seniors living in Poland and Slovakia. Research conducted in Poland, with two elderly women over 70, living in a small fishing village in the north of the country, shows that they experience unpleasant states of loneliness despite having adequate relationships with other people. As observations show, the increase in loneliness is caused by conditions that require the observance of precautionary measures related to the pandemic and restrictions on socializing and conducting classes in senior clubs. The above factors result in shallowing interpersonal interactions; weakening interpersonal relations; contribute to more superficial contacts mainly by telephone. Seniors who are in care at the Retirement Home and Nursing Home in Slovakia also admit to feeling lonely, though not directly. From the conversation, however, it can be concluded that this condition does not result directly from pandemic limitations, but rather from too little contact with loved ones. The presence of other residents and staff, contact with people, meals, activities and conversations significantly fill the time during the day. The study was aimed at checking the facts of loneliness faced by seniors living in Slovakia and Poland as well as providing information about their views on their situation. The aim of the study is also to indicate the direction that will be helpful in combating and preventing such a pejorative phenomenon as loneliness. The research was conducted in the form of an interview. In order for the quality of the interviews to be as high as possible, the respondents were selected from various backgrounds. In Poland, there were two single women, aged over 70, living in a tiny fishing village; in Slovakia they were clients of the Retirement Home and the Nursing Home in Rimavska Sobota. The authors of the texts on the situation in Poland and Slovakia would like to add that the respondents waited with interest for contact from the authors of the publication; were happy that they could speak; that there were people who were interested in their problems. The researchers tried to comprehensively present the analysis of the obtained data, situations and statements of the respondents and, using the bricollage technique, to interpret it in detail. The most important issues raised in the interviews were additionally summarized in the conclusions.

Résumé :
Abstract Understanding the resident experience is a critical step to creating a sustainable and replicable model of affordable resident-centered housing with supportive services programs. This study thus draws lessons from focus groups with participants in the R3 program for designing and implementing such initiatives in affordable senior housing. Findings indicate that the R3 program brings value to residents: they benefit from reliable information on health-related issues, as well as emotional support and assistance with accessing appropriate care. By focusing on prevention and ensuring timely access to services, findings suggest how the intervention could promote seniors living independently longer and lower health system costs. Results also suggest ways to improve the effectiveness of housing with services programs, including providing clarity regarding the purpose of the program, its components and staffing, building trust between program staff and residents, addressing concerns about privacy and confidentiality, and implementing a multipronged marketing and promotion strategy.

Kornelia Czerwińska, Izabella Kucharczyk, Senior citizens losing vision as a challenge to contemporary special education. Interdisciplinary Contexts of Special Pedagogy, no. 25, Poznań 2019. Pp. 333-351. Adam Mickiewicz University Press. ISSN 2300-391X. DOI: https://doi.org/10.14746/ikps.2019.25.14 Acquiring blindness or low vision at the senior age usually results in decreased quality of life due to a decrease in functional performance in the areas of activities of everyday activities, spatial orientation and mobility, physical activity, spending free time and obtaining information. Loss of vision also implies serious emotional consequences, which in the absence of professional therapeutic help and social support can lead to mental health disorders. Research analyses indicate that the level of satisfying rehabilitation needs of seniors who are losing vision is relatively low, and the specificity of their functioning resulting from the coexistence of various health problems is rarely included in support programs. The aim of the article is to indicate areas that have been so far neglected in the rehabilitation of elderly people who have acquired visual impairment and to formulate proposals aimed at increasing the availability and quality of therapeutic services for this social group.
