Résumé :
This study evaluated three types of books under different reading conditions and using two measures of personality. Data from 163 women were analyzed in a 3 × 2 × 2 multivariate design, with control groups, which varied type of book (fiction, autobiography, self-help), reading condition (supervised and unsupervised), and order of testing (Eysenck Personality Questionnaire and Personal Orientation Inventory). None of the groups who received books to read had mean scores significantly different from those of the control groups. However, the group reading the self-help book had significantly higher scores on scales of self-actualization than the groups using fictional or autobiographical books.

Résumé :
In a study examining the effects of a social stigma on impression management concerns, 28 menstruating and 30 nonmenstruating women were interviewed by a male confederate who either was or was not aware of their menstrual condition. Relative to menstruating women who thought the interviewer was unaware of their menstrual condition, menstruating women who believed that the interviewer knew they were menstruating perceived that the interviewer liked them less, yet were less motivated to make an impression on him. Nonmenstruating women reported more self-presentational motivation and perceived that the interviewer viewed them more positively than he did the menstruating women. These results suggest that the interviewer's knowledge of their menstrual condition inhibited menstruating women's self-presentational motivation. Implications of this social stigma for interpersonal relationships are discussed.

Résumé :
The subject of the research is self–actualization and subjectiveness of men and women looking for a job, and the goal is to identify differences. The article uses the method of psychological testing, i.e. J.E. Aleshina’s adaptation of E.L. Shostrom’s SAT test and M.A. Shchukina’s LPSD test. As a result of the study, both groups have revealed developed subjectiveness and a minimum of signs of self-actualization. In the group of men the indicator of orientation in time corresponds to the level of personality disorders, in the women one it is normative, with more developed self-support. Signs of self-actualization in men are marked only by contact, in women – by contact, acceptance of aggression, and flexibility of behavior. The share of self-actualizing men is 13 %, of women is about 22 %. Men have a higher level of subjectiveness, in the structure of which creativity dominates, and women have integrity. The field of application of the results obtained is applied and practical social psychology, and psychology of employment services. Prospects of the study conclude development of self-actualization programs for young people in search for a new job. The article concludes young men and women with work experience looking for a new place of employment emphasize their subjectiveness and do not hurry to include self-actualization mechanisms to become more competitive.

Résumé :
The present study examined age, sex and personality correlates of self-actualization among older adults. The Personal Orientation Inventory and Personality Research Form were administered individually to 80 community men and women aged 56 yr.—84 yr. No main effect for sex was observed on inventory scores, but younger subjects (56 yr.—67 yr.) obtained higher scores than older subjects (68 yr—84 yr.) on four subscales: Existentiality, Feeling Reactivity, Acceptance of Aggression and Capacity for Intimate Contact. Age was negatively correlated with Feeling Reactivity in both sexes; Inner-directedness decreased with age in men and Capacity for Intimate Contact diminished with age in women. For men, inventory scores were positively associated with the traits of Change and Endurance and negatively correlated with Abasement, Order and Succorance. For women, Impulsivity correlated positively and Order was associated negatively with scores on the inventory. These results suggest that the components of self-actualization are differentially influenced by age for men and women and that the traits accompanying self-actualization are sex-linked.

Résumé :
The article examines the theme of “connection” of male and female, the theme of “another state”, in which the male or “rationoid”, active, intellectual principle strives to merge with the female, “non-rational", passive, sensual in the work of the Austrian writer of the 20th century R. Musil “Portuguese”. Currently, the role relations of men and women are being reconsidered. The issue of the gender picture of our society (which is also formed in people’s minds by fiction) is more often raised. Based on the axiological and anthropological approaches, as well as the method of general textual analysis, integrated study of language means, the authors come to the conclusion that the self-realization of men and women occurs through the merging of the male and female leading to harmony and unity. The striking contrast of the male and female images in the portrait characteristics, actions, and deeds of the characters, the psychology of behavior in the development of the plot is expressed in vivid comparisons and epithets, and in the vocabulary of certain semantic groups. Despite the two polar ways of perception of one reality, the desire to understand each other, the feeling of love become a force that unite the opposites.

Résumé :
This study tested the prediction that individual differences in self-actualization would be associated with six academic orientations which influence college students' adjustment to their studies. Volunteer undergraduates, solicited from courses in the sciences and liberal arts and invited to complete internet measures of the academic orientations and self-actualization were 137 men and 311 women ( M age = 21.1, SD = 4.8). Statistically significant bivariate correlations obtained between scores on self-actualization with all six orientations: creative expression, reading for pleasure, academic efficacy, and, inversely, structure dependence, academic apathy, and mistrust of instructors. Regression analysis showed that four orientations were independently related to self-actualization scores. The role of these four orientations in actualizing students' adjustment was discussed, and implications were drawn about the interpretation of scores on the four orientations.

Résumé :
In contemporary transpersonal theory, women‟s experiences of transformation have largely been overlooked. This study seeks to answer the question, what are women‟s lived experiences of the path of transformation through self-other relationships? In setting the stage for the study, the researcher identifies two transpersonal theorists, Wilber and Almaas, and describes their models of consciousness development. She then outlines the feminist critique of existing psychological literature and the need for exclusively female research. Following is an inclusion of themes that have been extracted from the existing literature, themes which represent the biases of the researcher in what she expected to encounter in the current research. Further is a description of existentialism and the role it plays in inviting women to embark on a journey of transformation. The methods employed by the researcher were qualitative phenomenological-hermeneutics. Seven females participated in a three-stage interview process, whereby information was gathered via interviews, then further transcribed and interpreted. This information was then synthesized and presented in a thematic analysis where women‟s experiences were categorized into four separate stages. Finally, the sub-themes of each stage were compared to the stages of development as illustrated by Wilber and Almaas. Ultimately it is concluded that women‟s experiences are highlighted by the relational nature of self-development, and the cyclical process of the journey itself.

My thesis consists of a novel in stories, each taking place in or around the Brooklyn Art Institute. My characters fall along a spectrum of artistic failure, whether because they have lost touch with both their former successes and their former selves, or because they are unable to reach the upper echelons of the artistic community. The stories themselves are a testament both to failure and to the dreams and desires that lead to it, and ultimately ask the reader whether it is better to lead a life of comfortable contentment or to fail gloriously.

Résumé :
In the following nine linked stories, characters from disparate backgrounds and socio-economic strata converge in a rural community along the Missouri river in central Montana. A Texas-based oil exploration and production company takes up residence in the area, causing a stir in the neighborhood. Long-time local residents experience their daily lives amid a tourist driven economy and reaffirm their aspirations to leave despite significant obstacles and limitations. In "Show Me the Way to Go Home," a young waitress is stranded after a car accident and seeks help from residents living on the single row of houses in the area. In "Give Death Grace," a resident artist leaves to resolve her tumultuous past with her father. In "A Good Little Fisherwoman," a woman deals with the repercussions of her recent reproductive decisions during a fishing trip. In "Little Fires," a local man deals with the tragic burn injury of a child while also facing deeply rooted resentments with his mother. In "Dwelling," an aging local must decide whether or not she will sell her home to two strangers. In "Other Important Areas of Functioning," a woman decides to discontinue her mood stabilizing medications in favor of a more natural lifestyle. While this place means something different to each of these characters, they all coexist while facing individual challenges.

Résumé :
The number of women who choose to combine careers and traditional roles as mothers has been increasing steadily over the last number of years. As a result, the subjective wellbeing of these women has been the focus of many research projects over the last number of years. Subjective well-being has been defined in various ways by different authors. One definition describes subjective well-being as people's evaluations of their lives, which includes happiness, pleasant emotions, life satisfaction, and a relative absence of unpleasant moods and emotions. The current study, which took the form of a multiple case study, attempted to explore and describe White employed married mothers’ subjective experience of their well-being. The study also explored these women's experiences of combining the roles of employee and motherhood. The sample was obtained through the snowballing technique, and both qualitative (in-depth interviews) and quantitative techniques (two questionnaires - the Satisfaction with Life Scale and the Beck Depression Inventory) were utilized. The analysis of the data that was gathered was done by means of thematic and content analyses.

Résumé :
Thesis (M Social Work)--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to gain understanding of the perceptions and experiences of divorced women in the postdivorce phase, with specific reference to rural divorcees. During intervention with divorced women the social worker ought to be informed about the needs of divorcees, as well as be skilled to deal with the trauma of divorce. It is therefore necessary to understand how women experience the post-divorce process. The Systems, Ecological, Strengths and Feminist Perspectives are used as a frame of reference to understand the adaptation of divorced women. First, a study of relevant literature is undertaken which presents a broad review of the process of divorce; divorce as a mourning process, as well as the influence of divorce on the women and children. Attention is also devoted to literature on the adaptation of women in the post-divorce phase. Second a qualitative, phenomenological research subject is chosen to explore the experiences and perceptions of divorced women’s adaptation during the post divorce-phase. Factors which obstruct adaptation, as well as factors which stimulate personal growth, came to light during the empirical research. Four themes unfolded from the research. The first theme relates to tension: tension regarding finances; tension regarding health; tension arising from the overloading of roles and tension resulting from the relationship with the ex-husband, as well as how divorce is experienced int the rural areas. The second theme deals with spirituality: divorce as a spiritual crisis; deepenig spirituality; spirituality in the shaping of identity and facilitating to a large extent the mourning process. In the third theme various sources of support are discussed, while the fourth theme focuses on the positive side of divorce, namely personal growth. The before mentioned themes contain the challenges divorced women experience during the post-divorce phase. Recommendations focus on post-divorce intervention which are aimded to relief stress, strengthen spirituality, to obtain knowledge of supportsystems in the community, and also to stimulate the process of personal growth.

Hartrick, Gweneth Ann. « Women who are mothers : experiences of self-definition ». Thesis, 1994. https://dspace.library.uvic.ca//handle/1828/9668.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Recent literature has challenged traditional views of women's development of self . Many scholars have suggested that the traditional concept of self-as-autonomous being does not reflect women's experiences. Further, it has been suggested that for women who are mothers the conceptualization of self-as-autonomous is particularly questionable. With no other apparent research existing to illuminate the nature and experience of self-definition for women who are mothers, this study addressed the question: "What is the experience of defining self for women who are mothers?". A human caring methodology which integrated elements of interpretive phenomenology and feminist inquiry was employed to explore this research question. Seven women who were actively engaged in motherhood participated in the study. Data gathering involved two individual interviews with each of the participants and concluded with the women participating in a focus group where the preliminary findings were discussed. The study revealed two interrelated aspects including, (a) a description of the nature of self, and (b) the ongoing process of defining self. The nature of self consisted of three themes. The themes which arose were: (a) self as a multiplicity of parts, (b) self as a relational process, and (c) self as a synthesis. The process of defining self consisted of three phases: (a) non-reflective doing, (b) living in the shadows, and (c) reclaiming and discovering self. Each of these phases were continually experienced with different ones dominating at varying times and in varying situations. Within each of the phases, a number of themes were described and illuminated. The study pointed to the definition and their experience of health in addressing the implications for practice, therefore, a framework for health promoting practice to support women's process of self–definition was developed.
