Birch, Jonathan. Conceptualizing Social Behaviour. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198733058.003.0001.

Résumé :
Hamilton classified social behaviours by the sign of their effects on the reproductive success of the actor and the recipient, leading to a four-part schema that categorizes behaviour as altruistic, selfish, mutually beneficial, or spiteful. While broadly endorsing Hamilton’s approach, this chapter argues that we should categorize social behaviour in terms of the selection processes that have maintained the behaviour in recent evolutionary history. Given its close affinity with a recent history theory of function, this approach faces objections that parallel the well-known objections to that theory, but parallel responses are also available. This chapter further argues that the classification of an action should be (i) strategy-relative and (ii) task-relative.

Résumé :
As sleep medicine advances, there is increasing demand on services including neurophysiology to investigate sleep disorders. This chapter classifies the sleep disorders according to the main symptom presenting to the clinician, including excessive daytime sleepiness, insomnia, patients sleeping at the wrong times due to a circadian rhythm disorder, and movements or behaviours in sleep. The clinical presentation of common sleep disorders in each category are outlined, including obstructive sleep apnoea, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, periodic leg movements disorder, circadian rhythm disorders, and non-rapid eye movement and rapid eye movement parasomnias. The chapter discusses the overlap of symptoms in different sleep disorders, and the importance of selecting appropriate sleep studies, and recognizes the pitfalls, both clinical and in interpretation of sleep studies. The difficulties in diagnosing narcolepsy and differentiating from other causes of excessive daytime sleepiness, and when to investigate parasomnias is explained.

Weisberg, Herb. Total Survey Error. Sous la direction de Lonna Rae Atkeson et R. Michael Alvarez. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190213299.013.22.

Résumé :
The total survey error (TSE) approach is a useful schema for organizing the planning and evaluation of surveys. It classifies the several possible types of errors in surveys, including in respondent selection, response accuracy, and survey administration. While the goal is to minimize these errors, the TSE approach emphasizes that this must be done within limitations imposed by several constraints: the cost of minimizing each type of error, the time requirements for the survey, and ethical standards. In addition to survey errors and constraints, there are several survey effects for which there are no error-free solutions; the size of these effects can be studied even though they cannot be eliminated. The total survey quality (TSQ) approach further emphasizes the need for survey organizations to maximize the quality of the product they deliver to their clients, within the context of TSE tradeoffs between survey errors and costs.

van der Vlag, Johan, et Jo H. M. Berden. The patient with systemic lupus erythematosus. Sous la direction de Giuseppe Remuzzi. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199592548.003.0161.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a systemic autoimmune disease with various clinical manifestations. The hallmark of SLE is the presence of antibodies against nuclear constituents, such as double-stranded (ds)DNA, histones, and nucleosomes. Local deposition of antinuclear antibodies in complex with nuclear autoantigens induces serious inflammatory conditions that can affect several tissues and organs, including the kidney. The levels of antinucleosome and anti-dsDNA antibodies seem to correlate with glomerulonephritis and these autoantibodies can often be detected years before the patient is diagnosed with SLE. Apoptotic debris is present in the extracellular matrix and circulation of patients with SLE due to an aberrant process of apoptosis and/or insufficient clearance of apoptotic cells and apoptotic debris. The non-cleared apoptotic debris in patients with SLE may lead to activation of both the innate (myeloid and plasmacytoid dendritic cells) and adaptive (T and B cells) immune system. In addition to the activation by apoptotic debris and immune complexes, the immune system in SLE may be deregulated at the level of (a) presentation of self-peptides by antigen-presenting cells, (b) selection processes for both B and T cells, and (c) regulatory processes of B- and T-cell responses. Lupus nephritis may be classified in different classes based on histological findings in renal biopsies. The chromatin-containing immune complexes deposit in the capillary filter, most likely due to the interaction of chromatin with the polysaccharide heparan sulphate. A decreased renal expression of the endonuclease DNaseI further contributes to the glomerular persistence of chromatin and the development of glomerulonephritis.Current treatment of lupus nephritis is not specific and aims to reduce the inflammatory response with general immunosuppressive therapies. However, research has revealed novel potential therapeutic candidates at the level of dendritic cells, B cells, and T cells.
