Résumé :
Abstract. In northern Europe, wetlands hold valuable cultural heritage and enable the conservation of organic material. The region of Lower-Saxony (Germany) boarders the Netherlands in the West and the North Sea in the North. Until the era of cultivation and drainage large parts of northern Lower-Saxony were covered by bogs. Human populations have been living in this environment and developed strategies for crossings since the Neolithic period. There are about 500 wooden trackways listed in Lower-Saxony and several of them have been excavated. The wooden trackway PR6 located in the Aschener Bog, district of Diepholz has been excavated from 2019 to 2021 in cooperation with the natural park Dümmer and the Lower-Saxony State Service for Cultural Heritage (NLD). The project aimed to study a segment of about 550m, which was endangered by peat mining. The company DENKMAL3D (D3D) was contracted for the project and conducted the excavation on site supervised by Dr. M. Heumüller (NLD). Additionally, several staff members from D3D were involved in different capacity: 3D documentation, surveying, and conservation-restoration. This contribution shows the importance of interdisciplinarity in an archaeological research project involving organic material, which is very challenging to excavated and to conserve long-term. Which ethical decision had to be made and how did 3D documentation played a central role in supporting this process? The technical details will be presented as well as future perspective will be discussed and the following research project shortly mentioned.

Résumé :
AbstractCretaceous sandstones occur mainly in the north and NE of Germany. Some of them have been quarried for more than a thousand years and they have been transported to other regions, even abroad, from as early as medieval times. These are the Elbe Sandstones in Saxony, the Wealden Sandstones and the Bentheimer Sandstone in Lower Saxony and the Baumberger Sandstone in North Rhein-Westfalia. All of these are still quarried, and all can be used as building stone as well as for sculptures. They are introduced with their special features and their use over the centuries.

Résumé :
Lusatian Serbs, also called Sorbs, are people living in Upper, Middle and Lower Lusatia. This small nation is a remnant of the Slavic settlement in East Germany (Brandenburg and Saxony). Lower Lusatia now lies in the state of Brandenburg, and Upper and Middle Lusatia in the Free State of Saxony. According to official data, in these areas there are approximately 50,000 – 60,000 Lusatian Serbs, of which it is assumed that two-thirds reside in Saxony and one-third in Brandenburg. The article draws attention to formal and legal issues aimed at protecting the culture and the Lower Sorbian language. The analyses carried out concern the general provisions of the European Union, Germany and more detailed guidelines adopted in Brandenburg. Legal acts are important formal means of protection, the effectiveness of which is expressed by the way of practice. Unfortunately, in Brandenburg, many of the existing regulations have no proper effect on everyday life or are distorted. The article is an attempt to identify the assumptions with the implementation, to recognize the limitations, but also to discuss the directions of improving the existing state.

Résumé :
This thesis analyses the commercial, maritime and military relations between Scotland and the cities and territories in the North Western parts of the Holy Roman Empire during the early modern period; specifically Hamburg, Bremen, the Swedish duchies of Bremen and Verden, Danish Altona and Braunschweig-Lüneburg. Having identified anomalies in the histories of these locations, and bringing a more international dimension to them, my study tackles a remarkable understudied geo-political location. The core of my research identifies the immigration of Scots and the establishment of commercial networks within a region rather than an individual territory, highlighting contact across political borders. This region differed significantly from other places in Northern Europe in that it did not maintain an ethnically distinct Scottish community enforcing and encouraging interaction with the indigenous German population and other foreigners such as the English Merchant Adventurers in Hamburg. The survey reveals that despite the lack of such a community the region was of commercial significance to Scots as evidenced by the presence of individual Scottish merchants, factors and entrepreneurs whose trade links stretched far beyond their home country. Significantly, these Scots present in mercantile capacities were demonstrably linked to their countrymen who frequented the region as diplomats and soldiers who frequently resided in the neutral cities of Bremen and Hamburg. Some of these Scots within the Swedish army were of importance in the administration of Swedish Bremen-Verden while others fought for Braunschweig-Lüneburg. Their presence encouraged chain migration, particularly offering shelter to Scottish political exiles in the later seventeenth century. Analysing the collective role of these men and the relationships between them, this thesis highlights the overall significance of the wider Elbe-Weser region to the Scots and vice versa, filling a gap in our understanding of the Scottish Diaspora in the early modern period, and broadening our understanding of the region itself.

Résumé :
Abstract Reduction of drilling costs in the oil and gas industry and the geothermal energy sector is the main driver for major investments in drilling optimization research. The best way to reduce drilling costs is to minimize the overall time needed for drilling a well. This can be accomplished by optimizing the non-productive time during an operation, and through increasing the rate of penetration (ROP) while actively drilling. ROP has already been modeled in the past using empirical correlations. However, nowadays, methods from data science can be applied to the large data sets obtained during drilling operations, both for real-time prediction of drilling performance and for analysis of historical data sets during the evaluation of previous drilling activities. In the current study, data from a geothermal well in the Hanover region in Lower Saxony (Germany) were used to train machine learning models using Random Forest™ regression and Gradient Boosting. Both techniques showed promising results for modeling ROP.

Résumé :
In Germany low / medium level waste, which is classified here as radioactive waste with negligible heat generation, will be disposed of in the Konrad underground repository. The construction and the operation of this nuclear facility required authorization by different fields of law, i.e., by nuclear law, mining law and water law. Whereas the nuclear law considers solely radiological aspects, the relevant permit issued according to the water law considers the impact of radioactive as well as non-radioactive harmful substances. The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) as operator of the repository and permit holder has (a) to record the disposed of radioactive and non-radioactive harmful substances and (b) to balance them. To meet these requirements BfS has developed a concept, which led to a site specific solution. Threshold values were defined for recording and for balancing the harmful substances. It had to be verified that by disposal of radioactive waste packages according to these values an adverse effect on the near-surface groundwater can be excluded. The Lower Saxony Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation Agency (NLWKN) as the responsible water law regulatory authority approved the operator’s concept as appropriate to comply with the requirements of the Water Law Permit. Nonetheless, collateral clauses were imposed to assure this.

Résumé :
Closely linked to the economic developments that followed after the Second World War, the emergence of golden shares was conceived as a way of preserving in favor of the public power the control over the companies initially owned by the state and subsequently privatized. They are shares that grant the state, as a shareholder, special prerogatives in companies that operate in strategic economic sectors (public security, defense, energy, telecommunications). Recognizing the state (minority in capital!) privileged faculties of a nature to ensure its control of the decision-making process, golden shares have been qualified by the Court of Justice of the European Union as barriers to the free movement of capital as they discourage acquisitions of participations and, implicitly, foreign investments. Traditionally, the Court in Luxembourg has shown very strict control over golden shares and very rarely has received the imperative reasons of general interest often invoked by states to justify them. A landmark judgment for the golden shares case law is the one pronounced in the case Commission v. Germany by which the Court, sitting as the Grand Chamber, admitted the action for failure to fulfill obligations introduced by the European Commission following the regime established by the provisions of the Volkswagen Law, more precisely the specific powers recognized to the Federal State and the Land of Lower Saxony in Volkswagen company. The Court not only had the opportunity to contribute to strengthening the free movement of capital but also to provide a model of analysis of the restrictions that stem from what we call golden shares. The study aims not only a detailed description of the case-law but also elements of novelty of the judgment that widens the debate on justifying restrictions from the perspective of specific reasons such as protecting the interests of employees and minority shareholders.
