Résumé :
AbstractWe consider higher secant varieties to Veronese varieties. Most points on the rth secant variety are represented by a finite scheme of length r contained in the Veronese variety – in fact, for a general point, the scheme is just a union of r distinct points. A modern way to phrase it is: the smoothable rank is equal to the border rank for most polynomials. This property is very useful for studying secant varieties, especially, whenever the smoothable rank is equal to the border rank for all points of the secant variety in question. In this note, we investigate those special points for which the smoothable rank is not equal to the border rank. In particular, we show an explicit example of a cubic in five variables with border rank 5 and smoothable rank 6. We also prove that all cubics in at most four variables have the smoothable rank equal to the border rank.

The least number of products of linear forms that may be added together to obtain a given form is the Chow rank of this form. The Chow rank of a generic form corresponds to the smallest [Formula: see text] for which the [Formula: see text]th secant variety of the Chow variety fills the ambient space. We show that, except for certain known exceptions, this secant variety has the expected dimension for low values of [Formula: see text].

AbstractWe study the regularity of the higher secant varieties of ℙ1 × ℙn, embedded with divisors of type (d, 2) and (d, 3). We produce, for the highest defective cases, a “determinantal” equation of the secant variety. As a corollary, we prove that the Veronese triple embedding of ℙn is not Grassmann defective.

Résumé :
We consider here the problem, which is quite classical in Algebraic geometry, of studying the secant varieties of a projective variety X. The case we concentrate on is when X is a Veronese variety, a Grassmannian or a Segre variety. Not only these varieties are among the ones that have been most classically studied, but a strong motivation in taking them into consideration is the fact that they parameterize, respectively, symmetric, skew-symmetric and general tensors, which are decomposable, and their secant varieties give a stratification of tensors via tensor rank. We collect here most of the known results and the open problems on this fascinating subject.

Résumé :
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the tensor decomposition of structured tensors related to SL(n)-irreducible representations. Structured tensors are multilinear objects satisfying specific symmetry relations and their decompositions are of great interest in the applications. In this thesis we look for the decompositions of tensors belonging to irreducible representations of SL(n) into sum of elementary objects associated to points of SL(n)-rational hoogeneous varieties. This family includes Veronese varieties (symmetric tensors), Grassmann varieties (skew-symmetric tensors), and flag varieties. A classic tool to study the decomposition of symmetric tensors is the apolarity theory, which dates back to Sylvester. An analogous skew-symmetric apolarity theory for skew-symmetric tensors have been developed only few years ago. In this thesis we describe a global apolarity theory called Schur apolarity theory, which is suitable for tensors belonging to any irreducible representation of SL(n). Examples, properties and applications of such apolarity are studied with details and original results both in algebra and geoemtry are provided.

Résumé :
The aim of this essay is to gain knowledge about attitudes towards the use of different varieties of English in the classroom from the perspective of seven English teachers in Swedish upper secondary school. The study was carried out through interviews with teachers from different upper secondary schools in Sweden. Qualitative interviews were used to gain information from the teachers. The results showed that the language varieties most of the teachers used were American English and British English, which had to do with what variety they were more exposed to. When asked about their students’ choices of language variety in the classroom, the teachers said that they used American English because of the frequent presence of the variety in films and television. The teachers worked with language varieties in the classroom by incorporating different varieties into the teaching using films, clips or listening comprehensions with speakers of, for example, Indian English or Australian English. Regarding the significance of working with language varieties in the classroom, the teachers said that it could develop knowledge and understanding of other people and that it could expand knowledge about the English-speaking world. In conclusion, the results showed that, even though American English and British English are the most commonly used English varieties in Swedish upper secondary schools, there are many ways teachers try to incorporate other language varieties to help students develop their English.

Résumé :
According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau (2012), the United States is the world's fifth most populous Spanish-speaking country, with over 35 million Spanish-speakers. In addition, Spanish is the most widely taught foreign language in the United States, with more students enrolled in Spanish at the higher-education level than in all other modern languages combined, as detailed in a 2010 report from the Modern Language Association (MLA). How are these two realities connected? Is the United States' status as a top Spanish-speaking country reflected in Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL) and Spanish as a Heritage Language (SHL) curricula at the university level? This case study of a large, Southwestern university, which is home to SFL and SHL programs among the largest in the country, explores that question using a two-tiered approach. First, Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is employed to examine the ideological underpinnings of how spoken varieties of Spanish, with particular emphasis on U.S. Spanish, are presented in first-year and second-year university-level SFL and SHL textbooks used at the university. Second, focus groups of SFL and SHL instructors are conducted to gain insight into their beliefs and practices regarding language variety in the classroom. The study finds a systematic reinforcement of the ideology of a monolithic 'standard' Spanish in the SFL and SHL textbooks and curricula, with only cursory attention paid to regional varieties of Spanish and an oftentimes explicit de-legitimization of U.S. Spanish in particular.

Wang, Ning.

Having identified the phonological system of the Wu language spoken in Suzhou according to the principles of Functional Phonology, we are interested in the phonic substance of the stops, by describing in detail the voicing, the non-voicing, the aspiration and the breathy voice correlated with the tonal register. Our biggest challenge is to prove the fact that the Wu speakers from Suzhou indeed have a non-phonological but phonetic voicing realization due to the position of the consonant and the tonal register in a particular context. To solve this, we have recorded the production of about twenty Wu speakers from Suzhou of both genders and two generations. In addition, we have measured the acoustic parameters such as F0, VOT, v-ratio, H1-H2, H1-A1, H1-A2, and CPP. These results are statistically tested with ANOVA, ART and GLMER methods on binomial-type responses. The ultimate goal of our research is to know if this phonetic production observed in Wu speakers from Suzhou has influenced the learning of the perception and production of the voiced stops of French and gave them an advantage over the Chinese who only speak mandarin. To do this, we have selected about thirty French beginner from the same group, half of whom are the Wu speakers from the Suzhou and half of whom are native speakers of mandarin from northern China, so as to carry out a series of perception and production tests focusing on French stops. The obtained results are analyzed and compared based on the principles of reputable models of Second Language Acquisition such as the Speech Learning Model and the Perceptual Assimilation Model

Thesis, Örebro universitet, Institutionen för humaniora, utbildnings- och samhällsvetenskap, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:oru:diva-75548.

Résumé :
This paper presents a qualitative study with semi-structured interviews investigating 1) How teachers in the course English 6 interpret the terms "relatively varied" and "well-grounded and balanced", and how their interpretations differed, 2) How do the teachers interpret the terms in relations to the National Agency for Education’s commentary material?, and 3) What kind of resources do the teachers use to understand those terms? The reason for conducting this research is to gain a greater understanding of how teachers in the course English 6 in upper secondary school interpret the terms in the requirements. The terms in our requirements leave a lot of room for interpretations, and I want to find out how teachers with experiences of teaching interpret the terms in order to better understand how they can be interpret. My finding revealed that three out of four of the interviewed teachers did not mention the terms in their description of them, they brought in other aspects from the requirements, and did not address neither of the terms clearly. This applied to all the teachers, except for T4. The teacher that did address the terms was the only one who read the National Agency’s commentary material, therefore T4’s interpretations of the term aligned closest to the description in the commentary material. From the answers the teachers provided me with, they seemed to interpret the requirements in their own way and this is a validity and reliability issue when assessing the students’ texts. The teachers answers are also discussed from a norm-referenced perspective.

Amrane, Amazigh. « Posets série-parallèles transfinis : automates, logiques et théories équationnelles ». Thesis, Normandie, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020NORMR102.

We study in this thesis structures extending the classical notion of word. They are built from a partially ordered set (poset) verifying the following properties : — they do not contain 4 distinct elements x, y, z, t whose relative order is exactly x < y, z < y, z < t (posets called N-free) ; — their chains are countable and scattered linear orderings ; — their antichains are finite ; and each element is labeled by a letter of a finite alphabet. Equivalently, the class of posets which we consider is the smallest one built from the empty poset and the singleton, and being closed under sequential and parallel products, and ω product and its backward ordering −ω (series-parallel posets). It is a generalization of both of finite series-parallel labeled posets, by adding infinity, and transfinite words, by weakening the total ordering of the elements to a partial ordering. In computer science, series-parallel posets find their interest in modeling concurrent processes based on fork/join primitives, and transfinite words in the study of recursion. The rational languages of these labeled posets are defined from expressions and equivalent automata introduced by Bedon and Rispal, which generalize thecase of transfinite words (Bruyère and Carton) and the one of finite posets (Lodaya and Weil). In this thesis we study such structures from the logic point of view. In particular, we generalize the Büchi-Elgot-Trakhtenbrot theorem, establishing in the case of finite words the correspondence between the class of rational languages and the one of languages definable in monadic second order logic (MSO). The implemented logic is an extension of MSO by Presburger arithmetic. We focus on some varieties of posets algebras too. We show that the algebra whose universe is the class of transfinite series-parallel posets and whose operations are the sequential and parallel products and the ω and −ω products (resp. powers) is free in the corresponding variety V (resp. V 0). We deduce the freeness of the same algebra without parallel or −ω product. Finally, we showthat the equational theory of V 0 is decidable. These results are, in particular, generalizations of similar results of Bloom and Choffrut on the variety of algebras of words whose length are less than ω!, of Choffrut and Ésik on the variety of algebras of N-free posets whose antichains are finite and whose chains are less than ω! and those of Bloom and Ésik on the variety of algebras of words indexed by countable and scattered linear orderings

Picot, Gautier.

This PhD thesis provides a numerical study of space trajectories in the Earth-Moon system when low-thrust is applied. Our computations are based on fundamental results from geometric control theory. The spacecraft's motion is modelled by the equations of the controlled restricted three-body problem. We focus on minimizing energy cost and transfer time. Optimal trajectories are found among a set of extremal curves, solutions of the Pontryagin's maximum principle, which can be computed solving a shooting equation thanks to a Newton algorithm. In this framework, initial conditions are found using homotopic methods or studying the linearized control system. We check local optimality of the trajectories using the second order optimality conditions related to the concept of conjugate points. In the case of the energy minimization problem, we also describe the principle of approximating Earth-Moon optimal transfers by concatening optimal keplerian trajectories around The Earth and the Moon and an energy-minimal solution of the linearized system in the neighbourhood of the equilibrium point L1

Résumé :
‘Naturalism’ is a category that applies to different philosophical perspectives sharing the idea that nature is the primary object of philosophical enquiry. However, the philosophical debate of the second half of the twentieth century, mainly within analytical philosophy, has led towards an identification of naturalism with the sole scientific naturalism. The volume contains the proceedings of a doctoral workshop, in which PhD students and professors of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne critically discussed this tendency. The contributions present some versions of naturalism, from ancient to contemporary philosophy, with the aim of showing how a naturalistic approach, together with some notions it implies (i.e. nature, habits, disposition, behaviour), may constitute valid categories of interpretation of reality out of a scientist paradigm.

Résumé :
Abstract While the EHEA has achieved its goal to reduce structural barriers for student and staff mobility, the situation is different when it comes to the realization of the agreed upon promotion of basic values and principles. For example, in a number of EHEA countries the adherence of academic freedom has deteriorated since 2010. In addition, various studies have suggested a decreasing level of political commitment to Europeanisation of higher education in a growing number of countries. Achieving progress in the coming period in this key part of the EHEA’s objectives is difficult also as a result of the problems the overall process of European integration faces. For example, Brexit, the rise of anti-EU political parties and movements, and growing disagreements among EU member states on the key ideas and principles underlying European integration are posing serious challenges for Europe’s way forward in higher education collaboration. In this chapter, we will discuss a number of the challenges facing, directly or indirectly, the EHEA. We will start with a discussion of the importance of the rise of science diplomacy for the EHEA, being a consequence of the growing connection between foreign affairs and the higher education & science policy areas. Next, we will analyse the growing intra-European political tensions, with a number of EHEA countries not adhering to basic European values and principles concerning liberal democracy and open societies. Further, we will examine relevant trends in EU-funded higher education collaboration within the EHEA, with special attention for the European University Initiative. Finally, the discussions and analyses presented in the chapter lead to proposing two complementary EHEA trajectories for the coming period, the first implying a move away from the geographical focus on Europe, the second including only those countries that adhere to promoting academic freedom, institutional autonomy and other basic values and principles. Both trajectories take as a starting-point that the EHEA is in need of fundamental reforms.

Résumé :
Just as laws are variably realized so are objective chances: in the patterns identified by the best system analysis and in propensities. Theories of chance face two significant problems: the problem of undermining that is alleged to afflict Humean accounts of chance and, second, the relationship of chance to frequencies and, thus, to successful action. Although some propensity accounts can avoid undermining, they do so at the expense of the second relationship. More concessive propensity theories make some headway with regard to the second problem but start to suffer from the first problem. The perceived advantage for agents in conforming their beliefs to chances, understood as propensities, is rooted in the same mistake about induction identified in Chapter 14. So the successful treatment of chance does not tell in favour of one theory of the laws that support them than another.

Résumé :
If one set of properties supervenes upon another, then the former have causal powers if: first, the supervenience base properties minimally metaphysically necessitate the supervening properties; second, part of the minimal supervenience base causes the target effect; third, instances of the supervening properties would all cause certain target effects in the right kind of circumstances, as a result of this. When these conditions are met, the causal relationship holds not only in virtue of the supervenience base properties but also the supervening ones. Two further explanatory virtues that citing property causes may display are: when a property has a distinctive causal profile (when it makes a causal contribution that no other property would) and when an instance of the property supplies the precise contribution required for a certain effect. Pragmatic appeal to the second explanatory virtue explains away our tendency to hear certain explicitly contrastive statements mistakenly as true.

When counterfactuals hold concerning entities with properties that stand in some kind of loose existential dependency relation, counterfactual dependence only indicates a causal relationship if part of their corresponding minimal supervenience bases satisfies the analysis of causation. The idea has application even if properties are understood in ways proponents of a powers ontology recommend. An analysis of intrinsic properties in this chapter appeals to three features—External Independence, Duplication Characterization, and Maximizing Recombination—each of which, by itself, doesn’t quite work to demarcate what we have in mind. This provides a second way of approaching the issue as well as assisting with later analysis of varieties of Humean supervenience.

Résumé :
As a country prone to earthquake disasters, seismic-resistant building design in Indonesia is one of important key in minimizing the impact of losses due to the damage caused. In building construction, innovation using cold-formed steel material is currently growing rapidly because of its advantages, such as very light weight, low prices, and practicality in assembly. For this reason, this experimental research focuses on the utility of cold-formed steel as a building frame using a variety of sheathed wall panel materials. The purpose of the study is to observe the structural strength of cold-formed steel frames with void panel walls subjected to seismic lateral loads. Two types of panel materials are commonly used, namely plywood and fiber cement board (FCB) which are installed on one side with the same thickness on the column of the frame test specimens. From the test results, the usage of sheathed wall panels in the cold-formed steel frame structure can increase its maximum lateral load capacity. The larger the area of the wall panels used, the greater the maximum load that can be resisted. Both of tangent stiffness and secant stiffness, the greater area of sheathed walls used will increase the shear stiffness of frame specimens. For all specimens, the FCB specimens have higher structural strength than frame with plywood sheathed walls.

Résumé :
Purpose – This paper aims to identify major supply data sources for short-term rental market research and to provide their advantages and limitations. Methodology – In the paper a grounded approach was used based on a literature review. This review comprised two steps with the first being the query in major databases that was supplemented by academic search engine that resulted in 170 articles. The second step was to investigate the papers’ methodological sections to identify characteristics and limitations of all data sources. Findings – This study identifies three major data sources for the short-term rental market: web scraping with the use of self-made bots, Inside Airbnb and Airdna. A majority (e.g. 74% of papers using Airdna as a source) did not mention any limitations and provide no discussion about the data source, while the remainder gave only superfluous information about possible limitations of its use. Their characteristics and limitations are extensively discussed using a proposed framework that consists of three levels: intermediary, web scraping, and source-specific. Contribution – Very limited number of studies have focused on the short-term rental data sources and this is the first one that discusses advantages and limitation of their use. This paper may be of help to academics or professionals in identifying the right source of data to suit their technical knowledge, financial and technical resources and research areas.

Résumé :
Abstract The study presented here explores the influence that an educational intervention has on students in generating requirements during a design task. An experiment was performed in a fourth-year level mechanical engineering design course in which student participants are given a design problem for which they generated a list of requirements, a lecture on requirements in engineering design, and a second design problem for which they generated a second list of requirements. The results from the two problems were tested for determine whether the problems were similar in terms of variety and novelty of requirements generated. The effects of the lecture were evaluated by comparing results from the pre- and post-lecture activity with the two problems. Variety was assessed by sorting the individual requirements generated by each participant into eighteen categories. Novelty was evaluated on the level of uniqueness of the requirement against the complete set generated by all participants, based on both syntax and semantic filtering. The findings suggest that the lecture had a positive impact on the students in increasing the variety of the requirements generated individually by the participants. Further, all the identified novel requirements belonged to the activity performed after lecture.

Résumé :
The possible applications of micro-thermofluid control are overviewed, mainly on the basis of the total of seventeen proceedings of IEEE International Workshops or Conferences on Micro Electro Mechanical Systems held since 1987. The contents consist of three aspects. The first is thermofluid control in microsystems; particularly, the attention is focused on the various types of micropumps. The second is thermofluid control in miniaturized thermofluid machines such as a microturbine and a microcooler. The third is micro-thermofluid control for conventional-sized flow phenomena such as turbulent shear flows and a flapping-wing micro-aerial vehicle. The author stresses that, in this field, considerable advances have been achieved by relatively young researchers with various backgrounds other than the classical theromofluid dynamics, and many challenging works are in progress which will lead to new possibilities in the field of thermofluid dynamics. Also, the author has gained the impression that the researchers’ byword has recently changed from “what can MEMS research do?” to “what should MEMS research do?”

Résumé :
Abstract Developing a robust, product platform architecture brings an important competitive advantage to a company. The major benefit is reduced design effort and time-to-market for future generations of the product. This paper describes a step-by-step method that aids companies in developing such a product platform architecture. Using the concept of specification “flows” within a product development project, the design for variety (DFV) method develops two indices to measure a product’s architecture. The first index is the Generational Variety Index (GVI), a measure for the amount of redesign effort required for future designs of the product. The second index is the Coupling Index (CI), a measure of the coupling among the product components. The design team uses these two indices to develop a decoupled architecture that requires less design effort for follow-on products.

Résumé :
Abstract This paper proposes a simultaneous optimization method for both module combination and module attributes of multiple products. As manufacturing competition has become restricted with high profitability and external constraints, simultaneous design of multiple products, which is called product variety design etc., becomes an important strategy. System-based optimal design paradigm is expected to be essential to rationalize such practices, since design for product variety is more complicated than one for a single product. Toward such a direction, we configure an optimization method for both module combination and module attributes across multiple products. The optimization method hybridizes a genetic algorithm, a mixed-integer programming method with a branch-and-bound technique, and a constrained nonlinear programming method, i.e., a successive quadratic programming method. In its optimization process, the first optimizes the combinatorial pattern of module commonality and similarity among different products, the second optimizes the directions of similarity on scale-based variety, and the third optimizes the continuous module attributes under the others. Finally it is applied to the simultaneous design problem of multiple airplanes to demonstrate its validity and effectiveness.

Résumé :
Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) is of strategic importance to the Ghanaian economy. It is the second most important industrial crop after cocoa and is used widely in local food preparation as well as in industrial processing. In spite of its importance, however, oil palm has consistently underperformed since the early twentieth century. This paper conducts a value chain analysis of the crop, foregrounding the political economy factors that shape the performance of the sector. It draws on a combination of in-depth interviews conducted in March 2020 with a variety of value chain actors and a review of the secondary literature. Additionally, between late May and early June 2020, twelve further interviews were conducted as part of a rapid market survey to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the value chain.

“Learning About Sexuality: A Practical Beginning” is divided into three main parts. The first includes approaches that program staff, activists, and researchers are taking to understand people’s experiences of sexuality. The second explores the explicit and implicit links among health-seeking behavior, contraceptive practice, reproductive health, and sexuality. The chapters in part three focus on activities that challenge entrenched attitudes and behavior about sexuality that have real and potentially harmful effects on women’s and men’s reproductive health. The book features program and research work in all regions of the world with women, men, girls, and boys. The chapters are written by authors from over a dozen countries, with over half the contributions coming from developing countries. Collectively, these chapters represent an exploration of the relationship of sexuality to reproductive health, contraceptive practice, and overall well-being. For all their variety of place, approach, and focus, a number of common themes emerge.

Résumé :
The financial losses caused by COVID-19 are extraordinary in scope and have affected every facet of the small business ecosystem. For entrepreneurs, recovery from the pandemic has similarly required extraordinary levels of assistance. We assess the connection between COVID-19 grant and loan emergency interventions with a variety of positive community economic development impacts. Our analysis draws from a survey of aid recipients across ten COVID-19 relief programs offered or administered by Carolina Small Business Development Fund between February 2020 and February 2022. The data highlight three main findings. First, while the pandemic’s economic damage was high across all underprivileged communities, in many cases the harms disproportionately accrued to Black-owned firms. Second, the results show that grant initiatives are better for short-term financial stability and are likely to position recipients for future financing opportunities. Finally, disaster loans are favored for outcomes related to higher employment retention and a creating a more favorable business sentiment outlook.

Aim 1: To determine levels of this second messenger in: a) B. melitensiscyclic-dimericguanosinemonophosphate-regulating mutants (BMEI1448, BMEI1453, and BMEI1520), and b) B. melitensis16M (wild type) and mutant infections of macrophages and immune competent mice. (US lab primary) Aim 2: To determine proteomic differences between Brucelladeletion mutants BMEI1453 (high cyclic-dimericguanosinemonophosphate, chronic persistent state) and BMEI1520 (low cyclicdimericguanosinemonophosphate, acute virulent state) compared to wild type B. melitensisto identify the role of this second messenger in establishing the two polar states of brucellosis. (US lab primary with synergistic assistance from the Israel lab Aim 3: Determine the level of Brucellacyclic-dimericguanosinemonophosphate and transcriptional expression from naturally infected placenta. (Israel lab primary with synergistic assistance from the US lab). B. Background Brucellaspecies are Gram-negative, facultative intracellular bacterial pathogens that cause brucellosis, the most prevalent zoonosis worldwide. Brucellosis is characterized by increased abortion, weak offspring, and decreased milk production in animals. Humans are infected with Brucellaby consuming contaminated milk products or via inhalation of aerosolized bacteria from occupational hazards. Chronic human infections can result in complications such as liver damage, orchitis, endocarditis, and arthritis. Brucellaspp. have the ability to infect both professional and non-professional phagocytes. Because of this, Brucellaencounter varied environments both throughout the body and within a cell and must adapt accordingly. To date, few virulence factors have been identified in B. melitensisand even less is known about how these virulence factors are regulated. Subsequently, little is known about how Brucellaadapt to its rapidly changing environments, and how it alternates between acute and chronic virulence. Our studies suggest that decreased concentrations of cyclic dimericguanosinemonophosphate (c-di-GMP) lead to an acute virulent state and increased concentrations of c-di-GMP lead to persistent, chronic state of B. melitensisin a mouse model of infection. We hypothesize that B. melitensisuses c-di-GMP to transition from the chronic state of an infected host to the acute, virulent stage of infection in the placenta where the bacteria prepare to infect a new host. Studies on environmental pathogens such as Vibrio choleraeand Pseudomonas aeruginosasupport a mechanism where changes in c-di-GMP levels cause the bacterium to alternate between virulent and chronic states. Little work exists on understanding the role of c-di-GMP in dangerous intracellular pathogens, like Brucellathat is a frequent pathogen in Israeli domestic animals and U.S. elk and bison. Brucellamust carefully regulate virulence factors during infection of a host to ensure proper expression at appropriate times in response to host cues. Recently, the novel secondary signaling molecule c-di-GMP has been identified as a major component of bacterial regulation and we have identified c-di-GMP as an important signaling factor in B. melitensishost adaptation. C. Major conclusions, solutions, achievements 1. The B. melitensis1453 deletion mutant has increased c-di-GMP, while the 1520 deletion mutant has decreased c-di-GMP. 2. Both mutants grow similarly in in vitro cultures; however, the 1453 mutant has a microcolony phenotype both in vitro and in vivo 3. The 1453 mutant has increased crystal violet staining suggesting biofilm formation. 4. Scanning electron microscopy revealed an abnormal coccus appearance with in increased cell area. 5. Proteomic analysis revealed the 1453 mutant possessed increased production of proteins involved in cell wall processes, cell division, and the Type IV secretion system, and a decrease in proteins involved in amino acid transport/metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, fatty acid production, and iron acquisition suggesting less preparedness for intracellular survival. 6. RNAseq analysis of bone marrow derived macrophages infected with the mutants revealed the host immune response is greatly reduced with the 1453 mutant infection. These findings support that microlocalization of proteins involved in c-di-GMP homeostasis serve a second messenger to B. melitensisregulating functions of the bacteria during infection of the host.

Résumé :
Magnetic responsive materials can be used in a variety of applications. For structural applications, the ability to create tunable moduli from relatively soft materials with applied electromagnetic stimuli can be advantageous for light-weight protection. This study investigated magnetorheological composite materials involving carbonyl iron particles (CIP) embedded into two different systems. The first material system was a model cementitious system of CIP and kaolinite clay dispersed in mineral oil. The magnetorheological behaviors were investigated by using parallel plates with an attached magnetic accessory to evaluate deformations up to 1 T. The yield stress of these slurries was measured by using rotational and oscillatory experiments and was found to be controllable based on CIP loading and magnetic field strength with yield stresses ranging from 10 to 104 Pa. The second material system utilized a polystyrene-butadiene rubber solvent-cast films with CIP embedded. The flexible matrix can stiffen and become rigid when an external field is applied. For CIP loadings of 8% and 17% vol %, the storage modulus response for each loading stiffened by 22% and 74%, respectively.

Résumé :
Agencies use a variety of technologies and data providers to obtain travel time information. The best quality data can be obtained from second-by-second tracking of vehicles, but that data presents many challenges in terms of privacy, storage requirements and analysis. More frequently agencies collect or purchase segment travel time based upon some type of matching of vehicles between two spatially distributed points. Typical methods for that data collection involve license plate re-identification, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or some type of rolling DSRC identifier. One of the challenges in each of these sampling techniques is to employ filtering techniques to remove outliers associated with trip chaining, but not remove important features in the data associated with incidents or traffic congestion. This paper describes a curated data set that was developed from high-fidelity GPS trajectory data. The curated data contained 31,621 vehicle observations spanning 42 days; 2550 observations had travel times greater than 3 minutes more than normal. From this baseline data set, outliers were determined using GPS waypoints to determine if the vehicle left the route. Two performance measures were identified for evaluating three outlier-filtering algorithms by the proportion of true samples rejected and proportion of outliers correctly identified. The effectiveness of the three methods over 10-minute sampling windows was also evaluated. The curated data set has been archived in a digital repository and is available online for others to test outlier-filtering algorithms.

Résumé :
In 2012, a giant salvinia (Salvinia molesta Mitchell) biological control project was initiated in Louisiana. Although similar quantities of salvinia weevils (Cyrtobagous salviniae Calder and Sands) were released at all sites, weevil densities were highly variable among sites. Additionally, signs of plant nitrogen depletion (yellowing plants) were observed at some sites. Because it is well known that plant nutrition can affect the success of a biocontrol agent because of slowed development and/or reduced fecundity, the correlation between giant salvinia nitrogen content and Salvinia weevil density was investigated during the growing seasons of the second and fourth years. During 2013, weevils were reintroduced to sites, and the magnitude of adult weevil density increase varied by site. Giant salvinia nitrogen content varied among sites and sampling dates. Upper Big Break plants had greater nitrogen than all other sites during 75% of sampling dates. Additionally, adult and larval densities were significantly correlated to plant nitrogen content. During 2015, trends were less distinct and weevil densities and nitrogen content varied based on the interaction between sampling date and site, but a significant correlation was not detected. Results from 1-yr of a 2-yr study confirmed published reports of the importance of plant nitrogen content to salvinia weevil productivity. Additional studies are warranted to evaluate and understand the role of nitrogen at giant salvinia biocontrol field sites.

Review question / Objective: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a novel infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which has caused a huge impact in many countries and has attracted great attention from countries around the world. However, since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, most attention has focused on containing transmission and addressing the surge of critically ill patients in acute care settings. As we enter the second phase of the pandemic, emphasis must evolve to post care of COVID-19 survivors. A variety of persistent symptoms, such as severe fatigue, shortness of breath, and attention disorder have been reported at several months after the onset of the infection. We urgently need to identify safe and effective COVID-19 rehabilitative strategies. Overwhelming evidence exists that physical activity produces short-, middle- and long-term health benefits that prevent, delay, mitigate and even reverse a large number of metabolic, pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of physical activity interventions for rehabilitation of post-covid-19 patient and provide a reliable method and credible evidence to improve the prognosis of post-COVID-19 patients via systematic review and meta-analysis.

Résumé :
Pesticide leaching in heterogeneous field soils is relatively unstudied and is the focus of this project. A wide variety of heterogeneous soils exist, characterized by processes that result from the presence of structural cracks, worm holes, and other preferred pathways within which the majority of transport can occur (called physical non-equilibrium processes), along with the presence of sorption processes that are both equilibrium and kinetic (chemical non-equilibrium processes). Previous studies of pesticide leaching have focused primarily on relatively homogeneous soils, which are less widely distributed in nature, but more studied due to the relative ease with which quantitative theory can be applied to interpret experimental results. The objectives of the proposed project were: first, to gain greater insight into the basic physical and chemical processes that characterize non-equilibrium systems, second, to improve our ability to predict pesticide leaching in heterogeneous field soils, and third, to estimate the consequences of non-equilibrium processes at the field scale by conducting an analysis of the probability of pesticide leaching when non-equilibrium processes prevail.
