Texte intégralBackground This research project was aimed at investigating psycho-physical well-being through the lens of the bio-psycho-social model, endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the definition of health as state of complete well-being. The different health models and the challenges of health promotion were explored with a specific focus on the issue of disability in children, interpreted within the framework of the International Classification of Functioning, Disabilities and Health (ICF). At the empirical level, psychological well-being components contributing to global health promotion were investigated, based on constructs developed in the domains of personality studies and Positive Psychology. Goals The major study aim was the investigation of psycho-physical well-being in children with typical development and with disabilities. Data were collected on their nutritional status, lifestyle and health-related quality of life, in order to identify risk factors and problematic aspects, and envisage potential educational and social interventions. As concerns psychological dimensions, data were collected on various well-being components, as well as on personality. Parents’ and teachers’ well-being was also assessed, in order to investigate correlations with the well-being of children, with particular attention to children with disability. Method This study involved 515 participants. Among them, 426 were children, 363 with typical development and 63 with disabilities or learning disorders; 33 participants were parents and 56 teachers. The sample was further divided into groups, in order to address different issues within the general study aims. The research tools included measures of health and lifestyle (Questionario Multiscopo ISTAT), health-related quality of life (PedsQL – Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory Varni, J.W., 1999; 2001; italian version Trapanotto, M., et al., 2009), life satisfaction (MSLSS - Multidimensional Students' Life Satisfaction Scale Huebner, 1994; Huebner et al., 1998; italian validation: Zappulla et al., 2014), psychological well-being (PWB-18 - Psychological Well-being Scales, Ryff, D., 1995 – Italian version Ruini et al., 2003), academic self-efficacy (ASCP - Scala di autoefficacia scolastica percepita italian validation: Pastorelli et al., 2001a), and personality profiles (BFQ-C C Big Five Questionnaire for Children, validazione italiana: Barbaranelli, Caprara e Rabasca, 1998b, self and proxy-administration). Results Some significant differences were detected in participants’ lifestyle, overall less healthy among children with disabilities. No significant differences instead emerged between children with typical development and children with disabilities in health-related quality of life and life satisfaction values. Findings also highlighted significant relationships of children’s well-being with both stable personality traits and the context sensitive dimension of academic self-efficacy. Finally, correlations emerged between children’s well-being and the well-being of their teachers and parents. Findings are however exploratory, and further studies are needed to better disentangle these relationships. Conclusion The findings obtained through this study provide some hints about possible intervention strategies to appropriately promote the psychophysical health and well-being of children, especially those with disabilities. Projects grounded into an integrated biopsychosocial view of health and well-being, and capitalizing on personal and contextual resources, may prove more effective in triggering virtuous developmental circles, in both the educational and social domains.
