Résumé :
Screen printing system has been used as one of the important technologies for developing ready to use portable biosensor devices. Screen printing allows the batch production of sensors on flexible substrates, textile materials and other wearable accessories. Owing to an exceptional performance such as flexibility, low cost, simple fabrication, and ability to translated into industrial scale production, screen printing technique advances the marketing potential of the electrochemical sensors. Unlike the advanced printing techniques, the screen-printing technique is less dependent on surface charge, particle size and the viscosity of the printing ink. In this work, we have attempted to develop a flexible electrochemical sensor for detecting cortisol levels using screen printing technique. Batches of three electrode sensor systems were designed and printed in uniform dimensions (2 cm x 2 cm). The mask for sensor design is fabricated using a transparent polyester sheet with an aid of XY cutter/plotter. Graphene ink was used to create working and counter electrodes, while the Ag/AgCl ink was used to create the reference electrode. A homemade silver ink stabilized with hydrogel network was used to create conductive tracks. A reagent-free detection of cortisol was demonstrated using a redox probe (methylene blue) tagged cortisol specific aptamer immobilized onto the working electrode. The variability between the sensor batches is also investigated. The functionality of the printed sensor was demonstrated for monitoring cortisol levels in human saliva samples. The printed sensing platform can also be integrated with wearable textile platform for monitoring cortisol levels in sweat.

Résumé :
In this study, the effects of different fabrication techniques on the electrochemical performance of solgel derived La0.6Sr0.4CoO3-? (LSC) cathode material for intermediate temperature proton-conducting fuel cells were investigated. Single-phase, sub-micron LSC powder was used to prepare cathode slurries by a simple grinding-stirring (G-S) technique and an advanced ball milling-triple roll milling (BM-TRM) technique. The prepared G-S and BM-TRM cathode slurries were brush painted and screen printed, respectively, onto separate BaCe0.54Zr0.36Y0.1O2.95 (BCZY) proton-conducting electrolytes to fabricate symmetrical cells of LSC|BCZY|LSC. The thickness of LSC cathode layer prepared by brush painting and screen printing was 17 ? 0.5 ?m and 7 ? 0.5 ?m, and the surface porosity of the layers was 32% and 27%, respectively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis revealed that the layer deposited by screen printing had lower area specific resistance measured at 700?C (0.25Wcm2) than the layer prepared by brush painting of G-S slurry (1.50Wcm2). The enhanced LSC cathode performance of the cell fabricated using BM-TRM assisted with screen printing is attributed to the improved particle homogeneity and network in the prepared slurry and the enhanced particle connectivity in the screen printed film.

Résumé :
There is a great demand for low-cost disposable sensors in a variety of markets, such as the food chainand health care. No assay is performed more than that of glucose and approximately 85 % of the entirebiosensor market accounts for glucose biosensors. Each year, 6 billion glucose assays are performed andthe majority of them are based on electrochemical detection. Organic electrochemical transistors(OECTs) have favorable properties in terms of low operating voltages and have previously been used asbase for electrochemical detection of glucose. A low-cost disposable biosensor can be achieved by theuse of high throughput printing techniques. Up until now, no printable biosensors based on organic electrochemicaltransistors have been developed. In this thesis a printable miniaturized prototype for a glucose biosensor based on an OECT with a platinizedgate electrode has been designed, developed and evaluated. The biosensor has been functionalizedwith the enzyme glucose oxidase. Different platinum deposition techniques have been used to depositplatinum onto the printed carbon gate electrode: electrodeposition, platinum nanoparticle solutiondeposited either by inkjet printing or pipetting and thermal evaporation. The gate electrodes were characterized with cyclic voltammetry in hydrogen peroxide, ferricyanide andglucose. The characterizations revealed no significant differences between the different deposition techniques. However, with gate electrodes produced by printed carbon followed by electrodeposition ofplatinum it was possible to sense glucose in a concentration in the range of the values for diabetic persons. Thus, the electrodes are a promising option as gate electrodes in a glucose biosensor based on anOECT. The characteristics of the OECT revealed that the responses resembled a transistor.

Résumé :
Active layer morphology of polymer-based solar cells plays an important role in improving power conversion efficiency (PCE). In this thesis, the focus is to improve the device efficiency of polymer-based solar cells. In the first objective, active layer morphology of polymer-solar cells was optimized though a novel solvent annealing technique. The second objective was to explore the possibility of replacing the highly sensitive aluminum cathode layer with a low-cost and stable alternative, copper metal. Large scale manufacturing of these solar cells is also explored using roll-to-roll printing techniques. Poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl (PCBM) were used as the active layer blend for fabricating the solar cell devices using bulk heterojunction (BHJ), which is a blend of a donor polymer and an acceptor material. Blends of the donor polymer, P3HT and acceptor, PCBM were cast using spin coating and the resulting active layers were solvent annealed with dichlorobenzene in an inert atmosphere. Solvent annealed devices showed improved morphology with nano-phase segregation revealed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis. The roughness of the active layer was found to be 6.5 nm. The nano-phase segregation was attributed to PCBM clusters and P3HT domains being arranged under the solvent annealing conditions. These test devices showed PCE up to 9.2 % with current density of 32.32 mA/cm2, which is the highest PCE reported to date for a P3HT-PCBM based system. Copper was deposited instead of the traditional aluminum for device fabrication. We were able to achieve similar PCEs with copper-based devices. Conductivity measurements were done on thermally deposited copper films using the two-probe method. Further, for these two configurations, PCE and other photovoltaic parameters were compared. Finally, we studied new techniques of large scale fabrication such as ultrasonic spray coating, screen-printing, and intense pulse light sintering, using the facilities at the Conn Center for Renewable Energy Research at the University of Louisville. In this study, prototype devices were fabricated on flexible ITO coated plastics. Sintering greatly improved the conductivity of the copper nano-ink cathode layer. We will explore this technique’s application to large-scale fabrication of solar cell devices in the future work.

To fulfill electronic device’s fast-change and innovative fancy design requirement, transparent series color ink with LED backlit design is massively applied in the industry. Because the composition of transparent color ink is quite different from traditional ink, it is difficult to control the printing flatness, quality consistency and backlit performance. The manufacture process is lack of systematic control. According to the high inspection standard of electronic device, the manufacture showed low yield and high quality cost. This study followed the framework of Six Sigma DMAIC methodology for improving the screen printing process of transparent color ink for a case company. The Taguchi’s design of experiment and the computational intelligence method were individually employed to determine the optimal settings of the critical-to-quality factors of the printing process. The results showed that the factor settings generated by the computational intelligence method can provide better printing performance. The average number of printing defects reduced by 71%, bring huge saving of quality cost for the case company.

This work studies the preparation of the working electrode of the dye-sensitized solar cells. The crystalline of the semiconductor materials of the working electrode, the thickness of the electrode, the uniformity of the coating layer, the pore distribution of the electrode and the surface condition of the electrode affect the energy conversion efficiency of the dye-sensitized solar cells. In this study, the effects of the screen printing parameters used for the preparation of the working electrode, the multilayer working electrode structure of and the surface modification of the working electrode on the photovoltaic performance of the dye-sensitized solar cells were investigated. Different formulation of the coating paste are required for different TiO2 layer preparation methods. The screen printing technique requires a relatively high viscosity coating paste, compared to the coating paste for doctor blading method. The layer prepared using P90 powder is denser compared to that using P25 powder. Hence, the energy conversion efficiency of DSSC using P90 powder is higher than that using P25 powder due to the dye absorption capacity. The uniformity of the coating layer is formed the best using the screen printing technique with the squeegee coating speed of 11 mm s-1 and the squeegee pressure of 3 laps. The thickness of the coating layer is about 5~7 μm using the stainless screen. The thickness of the coating layer is 15.2 μm using the stencil screen. The multilayer TiO2 structure with the composition of P200+P90+P25 shows a maximum DSSC conversion efficiency of 5.46%.

With the emergence of smart wearable devices connected to the Internet as IoT applications, the commercial electronics market is booming in a great diversity. The most popular applied scenarios are including health monitoring, exercise training, personal identification, etc. Besides, with the coming of aging societies, the need for health monitoring has become an urgent issue in developing and developed countries. Therefore, wearable health monitoring devices or portable medical usage take the lead in the market. However, all the wearable devices are encountering the challenge of long-term monitoring and low accuracy of measurement. To solve these two problems, screen printing method is used to fabricate the piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) in this thesis. By doing so, PZT can be deposited thicker in batch process then transferred to any flexible substrates which means the output power and sensitivity could be supposedly improved. In this research, the PZT (Lead Zirconium Titanate) is being used as piezoelectric material. The screen-printing fabrication process has improved with proper modification including paste producing, viscosity controlling and temperature control in the sintering process. Furthermore, the dielectric layer deposition is applied to improve the stability of the poling process. The devices have been improved comparing the results previously. In transferring process, the thin gold layer on silicon with thermal oxide on top is being the sacrificial layer of the process. PZT thick layer can be easily and successfully transferred after proper sintering process and then the piezoelectric layer can be bonded to any flexible substrates. In this thesis, an improved cantilever beam piezoelectric energy harvester(PEH) and transferred PEH are successfully fabricated. In improving PEH, the thickness of the PZT layer is about 22 μm. The resonance frequency and the maximum output power are 73.8 Hz and 4.51 μW in a vibration environment of 0.5 g. In transferred PEH. The thickness of the PZT layer is 12 μm. The resonant frequency and maximum output power are 85.7 Hz and 0.57 μW in the same environment.

Résumé :
Digital Light Processing (DLP) 3D printing allows for the creation of parts with advanced engineering materials and geometries difficult to produce through conventional manufacturing techniques. Photosensitive resin monomers are activated with a UV-producing LCD screen to polymerize, layer by layer, forming the desired part. With the right mixture of photosensitive resin and advanced engineering powder material, useful engineering-grade parts can be produced. The Bison 1000 is a research-grade DLP printer that permits the user to change many parameters, in order to discover an optimal method for producing 3D parts of any material of interest. In this presentation, the process parameter optimization and their influence on the 3D printed parts through DLP technique will be discussed. The presentation is focused on developing 3D printable slurry, printing of complex ceramic lattice structures, as well as post heat treatment of these DLP-produced parts.
