Résumé :
By the example of school reformer and education scholar Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827) along with editions of his writings and correspondence, this article examines the relationship between sources, research traditions, historiography, and the production of editions. What emerges is that those sources that have been turned into editions for use by researchers exercise a significant influence on the issues researchers explore and on historiography, while the kind of historiography dominant at any given moment has always privileged a particular kind of edition. In light of two examples, this paper elaborates on the problems this creates for historiography after the linguistic turn and how these can be minimized – in significant part by tapping the potential of digital editing. Résumé :
Arabic and Islamic studies, whether of the Abbasid or later periods, suffer from the lack of reliable editions of fundamental resources such as al-Ṭabarī’sTārīkh al-rusul wa-l-mulūk, al-Masʿūdī’sMurūj al-dhahab wa-maʿādin al-jawhar, Abū l-Faraj al-Iṣbahānī’sKitāb al-Aghānī, and others, despite a long history of scholarly interest in, and intensive use of these particular texts. The appearance in 2009 of the new edition of theFihristof Ibn al-Nadīm (d. 380/990) by Ayman Fuʾād Sayyid (hereafterafs) provides an opportunity to reflect on this general problem by considering the historical progress made in the editing and contextualization of this text that is central to the understanding of Abbasid history and letters and to nearly all the intellectual traditions that had arisen in the Islamic world by the fourth/tenth century. As will become clear, the complex history of scholarship on theFihristis an object lesson on the problem of failing adequately to take into account the work of earlier editors and scholars, made particularly difficult in this case by linguistic barriers and limited access to widely scattered publications. The following remarks attempt to reviewafs’s edition of theFihrist, to compare the views ofafs, the Russian scholar Valeriy V. Polosin, and others regarding the context and background of theFihrist, and to give an overview of the current state of knowledge about Ibn al-Nadīm and theFihrist. It will be argued that, beyond reliably publishing the contents of the earliest extant manuscript of theFihrist, substantial emendations to the text are required to produce a reliable edition of the work. An evaluation ofafs’s emendations to the text is followed by a number of additional proposed emendations.

Since the beginning of the excavations in Ancient Corinth by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens in 1896, a multi-period, intricate stratigraphy of the urban landscape of this site has been unravelled. This century-long history of excavations in Ancient Corinth has been previously disseminated by six editions of the site guide published by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. Previous editions were curated by the ASCSA director Rhys Carpenter in 1928 and in 1933; the scholar Charles Morgan in 1936; Oscar Broneer in 1947 and 1951, whose 1951 edition was revisited by Robert Scranton in 1954; and, finally, Corinth director Henry Robinson in 1960.

Résumé :
The increasing dissemination of Digital Scholarly Editions has highlighted not only the great potential of this method of publication, but also a good number of theoretical problems that affect both the DSEs as editorial products, and the impact of tools and methods of computer science on the methodology of textual criticism. On the one hand, the editions published so far are an evolution of the practice of ecdotics and represent not only a col- lection of interesting experiments, but also innovative and effective research tools. On the other hand, however, the limits within which an author of digital editions is forced to operate and the most appropriate strategies to minimize their impact have not yet been thoroughly investigated. The adoption of IT tools and methods, in fact, provides many answers to the requests of digital philologists, but the very nature of these tools imposes very strict modes of action, sometimes perceived as too rigid by the scholar. This article presents and describes a software tool that comes at the end of the process of creating a digital edition, to be used in that crucial phase when the edition is prepared for publication on the Web. The aim is not to show the more technical aspects of this tool, even if its fundamental characteristics will be introduced to better understand the terms of the issue, but to describe its genesis and development, and to highlight how visualization software represents a crucial element of the whole editorial process.

Google Scholar is a Google search tool that allows you to search academic papers, school literature, university newspapers and various articles. Launched in November 2004, it started offering searches in Portuguese on January 10, 2006 [1]. Currently, the Google Scholar H index has become a CAPES evaluation criterion for classifying and ranking journals on the sucupira platform, through the Qualis note [2]. The BJIHS in just one year achieved the feat of having the H 6 index. This means that the newspaper has 6 articles with at least 6 citations within the Google Scholar database. We are very grateful to the authors of these articles who help to boost the BJIHS metrics and make the newspaper each edition more relevant within the scientific community.

Abstract: The Indonesian Minister of Religion, Lukman Hakim Saifuddin, Fachrul Razi and Yaqul Cholil Qoumas, always gave directions to the Indonesian people to make religious moderation a shared commitment. One of the important elements of the implementation of religious moderation is carried out byscholar of Indonesian PTKIN in the form of reviewing journal articles. This article analyzes religious moderation in Indonesian PTKIN scholarships recorded in the form of journal articles from the first edition of 2016 to the second edition of 2020. To analyze these various articles, Verbalization will be adopted which was originally used to analyze the Qur'an for religious moderation. The Verbalization method, coined by Muhammad Alwi HS, has a strong epistemology, because it is based on the orallity of Qur'an which is the initial form as well as the identity of the Qur'an. Finally, this article concludes that PTKIN scholars are active in responding to the issue of religious moderation, which is carried out with various perspectives and scopes. What is more important is that almost all PTKIN scholars make efforts to verbalize religious moderation to the context or scope of their studies. This scholar is an important contribution of PTKIN scholars to efforts to produce patterns, guard, and develop religious moderation in Indonesia, especially since 2016-2020.

Résumé :
The article compares two approaches to studying line segmentation in verse. Line segmentation probably corresponded to pauses in declamation. The Estonian scholar Ants Oras studied syntactic breaks in Elizabethan dramas using punctuation as a signal of a “pause”. His research yielded valuable results, and his method has recently been followed by Professors Mac Donald P. Jackson and Douglas Bruster: places of punctuation can be quickly found by a computer. However, punctuation came from the random choices of copiers, editors and typesetters, therefore it is not too reliable. The Russian school of thought to which I belong looks for places of syntactic breaks of various strength. These do not change from edition to edition. Ants Oras’s tables at first glance remind us of those by Russian “Formalists”, for example, Boris Tomashevsky. However, no Russian scholar is quoted in Oras’s works, so the question is: did he know about the Russian works?

In 1894, the German scholar Edmund Parish published his classic work Über die Trugwahrnehmung, with an expanded English edition called Hallucinations and Illusions appearing in 1897. Both versions won critical acclaim from celebrities such as Joseph Jastrow and William James, although, curiously, few others seemed to have noticed the book. After two more publications, Parish inexplicably stopped publishing. During the century that followed, it seemed as if neither he nor his work had ever existed. Now that scholars have finally started to appreciate the book, the present paper seeks to answer the questions of how it came into being, why it disappeared for so long, and who its mysterious author was.

Résumé :
Abstract In 1890, Katharine Lee Bates, Wellesley professor, published a college/upper high school textbook entitled Ballad Book. Bates’ volume pre-dates by 4 years Francis Barton Gummere’s Old English Ballads (1894) and Helen Child Sargent and George Lyman Kittredge’s English and Scottish Popular Ballads (1904) by 14 years, making it the earliest ballad collection by an American scholar explicitly designed for classroom use. In 1904, Bates published a second edition of her textbook with the result that her two editions flank ballad work during the formative years of American ballad scholarship. This essay describes Bates’ approach to ballad teaching, how it changed between editions, and what her work demonstrates about early American academic ballad scholarship: that is, as an outcome of the political consequences of Bates’ promotion of a ballad study aimed at supporting classroom learning rather than one aimed at producing academic scholarship.

A review of the bilingual edition of the play Double Falsehood, or, The Distressed Lovers, prepared by ‘Book Centre Rudomino’. The play is supplied with three presentations: a translator’s introduction by Andrey Korchevsky, a foreword by the most renowned scholar of this highly mysterious play, Brean Hammond (he edited the play for the Arden series in 2010), and an afterword by Dmitry Ivanov, a Russian scholar of the period and translation. Is there much left of Shakespeare and Fletcher in Double Falsehood, and what exactly is it? Can one single out the earliest language stratum stemming from Cardenio? Stylistic and metric similarities aside, can one indeed recognize Shakespeare and Fletcher on the higher level of the whole work: its plot, composition, mise en scfnes, images and ideas? Does Double Falsehood preserve traces of the original composition and plotline of Cardenio? The paper is published on the eve of this extensively commented edition of Double Falsehood becoming available to Russian reading audiences and theatre practitioners.

[Rev. of: Verner I. V. The Interlinear Slavonic-Greek Psalter of 1552 Translated by Maximus the Greek. Moscow: Indrik, 2019, 928 pp. (in Russian)] The article offers a review of the study and publication of Maximus the Greek's 1552 translation of the Psalter. This translation, which has remained in manuscripts until now, is viewed as part of the European biblical revision, ialongside other well-known Renaissance translations and editions of the Holy Scriptures. The Church Slavonic-Greek Psalter of 1552 is a monument at once to Byzantine-Slavic, European-Slavic, and inter-Slavic cultural and linguistic ties of the early Modern period. The edition contains an exemplary linguistic and textological description of the Psalter of 1552 which clearly highlights the stages of Maximus the Greek's work on the text, reveals his methods using handwritten and printed sources in different languages, and explicates the translation technique of the Athos scholar. The book identifies the printed Greek original of the Psalter of 1552, which turns out to be the 1498 edition of Justin Decadius. The second part of the book contains a critical edition of the Psalter of 1552 based on the interlinear manuscript of the Russian State Library (RSL f. 173.I # 8) incorporating variant readings of six copies studied. The Greek part of the interlinear manuscript is presented in accordance with its specific Slavonic spelling. This book is a major contribution to paleoslavistics and to the research on biblical studies in Early Modern Russia.

The edition completes a correspondence that includes a letter from Warburg that has already been published several times. The two letters cast light on the hitherto barely known relation of Wilamowitz to Warburg himself and to his Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek in Hamburg. They centre on the Warburg Library’s special research interest, namely the influence of the ancient world on later cultural periods, especially the Renaissance.

In 1968 E.K. Borthwick, with a brilliant conjecture, cleared up a passage from Aristophanes’Peacethat had been considered ‘nonsense’ since antiquity. ‘Bell goldfinch’ (κώδων ἀκαλανθίς) the line seemed to be saying: a jumbled idea at best, gibberish at worst (1078). The scholium reads ad loc.: ταῦτα δὲ πάντα ἐπίτηδες ἀδιανοήτως ἔφρασεν, ‘all this is said as deliberate nonsense’, and later scholars generally follow suit (W.W. Merry, for example, in his 1900 edition ofPeacerefers to the line as ‘magnificent nonsense’). But Borthwick showed that this was not the case: ‘even nonsense expressions in Aristophanes’, he writes, ‘are not haphazard collocations of incongruous words signifying nothing’. What, then, to do with the ancient scholar (and those later ones) who failed to understand the passage, claiming it instead to be ‘nonsense’?

Abstract One of the masterpieces of the medieval Qurʾān commentary tradition is al-Basīṭ by the Nishapuri philologist and Qurʾān scholar, Abū l-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-Wāḥidī (d. 468/1076). It was the first Qurʾān commentary to start quoting Sībawayhi (d. ca. 180/796) extensively; it was also the first to position al-Zajjāj (d. 311/923) as a central authority in Qurʾān exegesis (tafsīr), a process already started by al-Wāḥidī’s teacher al-Thaʿlabī (d. 427/1035). Al-Basīṭ is a massive Qurʾān commentary, by any standard. The critical Imām University Edition of 2009 spans twenty-five volumes. It is rather unfortunate that this edition has left the task of studying the manuscript transmission of the work out of the picture. As a result, there is a lacuna in the edition covering verses Q 4:41-53, a substantial portion. In this article, an overview of the transmission history of the work is presented, followed by a critical edition of the missing part.

Résumé :
Manseong Park Chibok was a literary figure and scholar of the late Joseon period who, although not yet well known to the academic world, but now he leaves two types of literary collections. Comparing his two literary works, there is a considerable difference. This difference is due to the deletion and arrangement of the poems and sentences contained in the first edition book while bringing out the republished book. In a sentence, the difference between the first edition and the republished book can be divided into the cases where a sentence of a type not included in the first edition is included in the republished book, the sentence of the first edition is more than the republished book, and the sentence of the republished book is more than the first edition. This difference is also evident in the poetry. In the case of poem, the first edition is more than the republished book in the total number of works, but a poem not to be included in the first edition in the republished book has, so it is necessary to pay attention to comparison and review. In particular, in the case of series poem, a few poems have been deleted from some works in the first edition, so they should be carefully examined. The phenomenon found in Park Chibok's literary collection can be seen not only in his literary collection but also in most of the literary collections published in Korea in the pre-modern period. However, the difference between the series poem in the first edition and republished book shows that the person who leaves both the first edition and the republished book needs to be more cautious in his approach to the literary collection, and the literary capacity of the person who is responsible for correction or compilation in the publication of the republished book should be reviewed.

Résumé :
Introduction. The article examines a range of dharani (Mong., Kalm. tarni) texts included in the 108-volume canonical collection of Mongolian-language Kangyur. This xylographic edition of the Mongolian Kanjur had been delivered from China by the Indian scholar Raghu Vira to be further published by the renowned Buddhist scholar Lokesh Chandra in the Śata-Piṭaka Series in the 1970s. The whole set of this canonical edition was acquired by Ven. O. M. Dordzhiev (Kalm. Tügmüd Gadji), and is currently stored at the Scientific Archive of the Kalmyk Scientific Center (RAS) as part of the Collection of this Buddhist cleric. Goals. The paper aims to analyze the texts of prayers against diseases, similar in name and content, presented in different volumes of this canonical collection. Materials. To facilitate this, the study investigates a number of texts from the category of dharani (tarni) aimed at eliminating various diseases and their consequences. Those are included in the 14th and 24th volumes of Kangyur, which corresponds to the ‘Dandr-a’ (‘Tantra’) section. Results. The publication transliterates and translates works from the category of dharani (tarni), pacifying various diseases and epidemics.

Résumé :
British Library manuscript Cotton Titus A.xix, a miscellany compiled in the fifteenth century, contains on folios 153r–155r an untitled Latin version of the legend of Roland with the colophon ‘Explicit de tradicione Guenonis.’ This text was first published in 1837 by Francisque Michel as an appendix to the editio princeps of the Chanson de Roland in the Oxford manuscript, with no commentary of any kind. In 1838 Wilhelm Grimm declared that the Latin version was a deliberate condensation of the legend and hazarded that it might have been composed in the twelfth century. In 1839 the Swiss scholar Johann Caspar von Orelli reprinted Michel's text in a classicizing orthography with occasional conjectural improvements, and dated the poem in the twelfth or thirteenth century on the basis of its resemblance to the Ysengrimus and the Speculum stultorum.

A. C. Cassio has recently pointed out that Μαρικ⋯ς, the name which Eupolis applied to the demagogue Hyperbolus, is a transliteration of the Old Persian word . In fact, a Persian origin μαρικ⋯ς was suspected long ago. The seventeenth-century English scholar Edward Bernard, whose notes were used by J. Alberti in his edition of Hesychius, connected μαρικ⋯ς with the Modern Persian mardekeh, which literally means ‘a little man’ and has the connotation ‘a vile person’, ‘a scoundrel’. A. Meineke followed Bernard's derivation of μαρικ⋯ς from Persian, as did K. Latte in his recent edition of Hesychius. These references should be added to Cassio's citation of E. Maass' quotation of K. F. Geldner's opinion.

As the title of this edition indicates, it provides a critical apparatus for a holistic understanding of this alliterative epistolary poem by C.S. Lewis, which has never appeared in print before. With this in mind, all points requiring clarification are addressed: a description and history of the manuscript, Lewis's relationship with the addressee, the dating of the work, the Old English phrases and connection to Beowulf, and the poem's alliterative nature. It is the editor's hope that the edition provides a solid foundation for all further work on ‘Mód Þrýþe Ne Wæg', a poem which highlights once more that Lewis the scholar and Lewis the author often operated under the same guise.

Abstract A Linguist As International Entrepreneur M.J. de Goeje and the Annals of al-Tabari (1872-1901) Modern-day scientists and humanities scholars are often expected to possess personality traits, skills, and virtues typically associated with entrepreneurs. These include (but are not limited to) a willingness to take risks, the ability to lead a diverse team of collaborators, and a flexible mindset. The roots of the ideal of the entrepreneurial scholar, however, are older. In this article, I investigate the realization of Michael Jan de Goeje’s al-Tabari edition in the last decades of the nineteenth century. To finance this ambitious endeavour and to successfully gather and manage a team of scholarly and non-scholarly collaborators, De Goeje needed to possess all the traits, skills, and virtues mentioned above. This case study demonstrates how an entrepreneurial spirit could be an asset for ambitious nineteenth-century scholars. At the same time, it illustrates one of the ways in which seemingly modern ideals of scholarship build on existing ones.

Rewriting Boewulf: J.R.R. Tolkien’s Meandering Translation J.R.R. Tolkien’s works related to translation include both translations and adaptations in the form of pastiche. All of them have been published as posthumous editions, equipped with detailed critical commentaries and edited by the writer’s son, Christopher Tolkien. Among recent publications in English and Polish, one that deserves particular attention is a 1926 prose translation of the Old English poem Beowulf (2014, Polish ed. 2015). This edition presents Tolkien performing a few roles, acting as a translator, translation critic, editor, commentator, literary scholar, linguist, and creative writer. In fact, “translation” becomes a textual hybrid in which one can observe the work of a translator from the initial phase of close reading of a source text through three variants of prose translation (two from 1926 and one from 1942); alternative fragmentar translations in alliterative verse; a detailed philological and cultural commentary composed of lecture notes; original literary works inspired by Beowulf, which include the short story Sellic Spell (in two English versions and as a back translation into Old English); and two versions of the original poem The Lay of Beowulf. As a result, the 2014 edition of Tolkien’s Beowulf realizes the ideal of a translation once described by Vladimir Nabokov: the text of translation emerges from multilayered commentary, which, in Tolkien’s work, crosses the boundaries of languages and genres.

Although the discovering of a complete Palestinian Targum in the Codex Vatican Neofiti 1 (N) erroneously marked in the spine as ‘ Targum Onkelos ’ was not of archaeological but merely archival nature, it was an event of major importance in Aramaic studies. Its announcement by the discoverer, Alejandro Diez Macho, a former student of P. E. Kahle, in Estudios Biblicos, 16, 1956, 446 ff., and Sefarad, 17, 1957, 119 ff., and especially the impressive voluminous publication by the same scholar, Neophyti 1 Targum Palestinense MS de la Biblioteca Vaticana (Madrid-Barcelona, I, Genesis, 1968; II, Exodo, 1970; III, Levitico 1971; IV, Numeros, 1974; v, Deuteronomio, 1978), provided with detailed scholarly introductions to each volume as well as translations of the edited text into Spanish (by the editor), French (by R. Le Déaut) and English (by M. McNamara and M. Maher), aroused great and justified enthusiasm among scholars. Meanwhile, a facsimile edition in 140 copies was published by Makor in Jerusalem (1970), which helped to clear up certain problems in Macho's edition (esp. the omission of the Hebrew lemmata at the beginning of each verse and errors obliterated by the copyists) deplored by David M. Golomb in his recently published thesis, A grammar of Targum Neofiti (p. 1 f.).

AbstractIn the Almagest, Ptolemy proposed the concept of winding motion, especially to explain planetary latitudes. Ibn al-Haytham (beginning 11th c.) wrote a treatise entitled Fī ḥarakat al-iltifāf, “Concerning the winding motion”. An anonymous scholar wrote a refutation of this treatise. Both texts have been lost; but the answer of Ibn al-Haytham has survived: Fī ḥall šukūk ḥarakat al-iltifāf, “The resolution of doubts concerning the winding motion”. There he reminds us of his model and gives us a more detailed explanation. We give here a critical edition, translation and commentary of this answer, as well as an edition and translation of some related excerpts from Ptolemy's Planetary Hypotheses and Quṭb al-Dīn al-Shīrāzī’s Nihāyat al-idrāk (13th c.).

Résumé :
Almost 75 years after the initial publication of Theodor Nöldeke's Geschichte des Qorâns, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Zanjānī (1892–1941), an Iranian religious scholar, made a brief reference in the final chapter of his Tārīkh al-Qurʾān to an edition of Nöldeke's work revised by Schwally, Bergsträsser and Pretzl. He described Nöldeke as a great scholar and his Geschichte des Qorâns as a valuable contribution. Al-Zanjānī’s work also included an outline of Nöldeke's discussion on the order of the revelation of the suras. It is probably safe to say that al-Zanjānī’s book is the first independent work on the history of the Qur'an by a Muslim scholar. This fact leads one to wonder about the apparent lack of previous interest in the historiography of the Qur'an among Islamic scholarship. The present paper seeks to address this question and offer an overview of historiographical scholarship on the Qur'an contributed by Muslim writers both before and following Nöldeke

Résumé :
Mykhailo Hrushevsky’s presence in French culture dates back to the beginning of the 20th century (a course of lectures in Paris, a review of É. Verhaeren’s drama, a 1912 Paris edition, etc.). Scholar’s most outstanding work in the context of Ukrainian-Francophone literary relations is his «Anthologie de la literature ukrainienne» (1921), which helped Francophone researchers learn about the literary heritage of Ukraine from ancient times to the 19th century. The main thesis of the article is the importance of this anthology in further acquaintance of the French speaking world with Ukrainian literature. The preface to this book written by the French linguist professor Antoine Meillet of College de France was important as it emphasized such an significant fact about the publication as «literature in Ukrainian not well known in other countries». M. Hrushevsky explained that it was only the first step of Ukrainian sociological institute which started its work on creation of the anthology of Ukrainian literature of later period. Materials from the edition of Ukrainian Sociological Institute were partly used in 1928 by the editorship of the Belgian-French magazine «La Nervie», being completed by some other samples of Ukrainian literature of the second half of the 19th century and the first two decades of the 20thcentury. Another fact that testifies about the importance ofHrushevsky’s anthology is that the outstanding French scholar and literary critic Roger Tisserand, the author of numerous encyclopedia articles about Ukrainian writers and the work «Life of a nation. Ukraine», referred to it more than once using some samples of Ukrainian poetry. Two excerpts from Mykhailo Hrushevsky’s edition («Galician–Volhynian Chronicle» (fragment) and «Praise to St. Volodymyr») were reprinted in Vol. 4a (1993) by the compilers of Belgian encyclopaedia «Patrimoine littéraireeuropéen» (12 vols.). A separate chapter about Mykhailo Hrushevsky and an excerpt from his foreword to the «Anthologie…» were included into Sarcelles anthology of Ukrainian literature (2004) by literary scholar Arkady Zhukovsky. The scholar described extensively Mykhailo Hrushevsky with special focus on his scholarly-research work, teaching and organization of academic life. The literary critic illustrated life and creative activity of the scholar by extracts from the preface to «Anthologie de la littérature ukrainienne…» and gave a short explanation of the issues, raised by Mykhailo Hrushevsky in his subsequent works. The material in the article about the resonance of M. Hrushevsky’s French anthology in the French speaking milieu testifies to the presence of the outstanding scholar, historian and literary critic in European culture. Such works as André Mazon’s memorable article in the Slavic journal «Le Monde Slave» (V. 12, № 1–2, 1935) and A. Joukovsky’s French language research «Mykhailo Hrouchevskyi. Sa vie et son œuvre. Paris, 1997» are of great interest.

Green. This editorial features an interview with Dr. Green and previews the forthcoming 5th edition of Green and Kreuter’s seminal health promotion planning textbook. The new title will be Health Program Planning, Implementation and Evaluation: Creating Behavioral, Environmental and Policy Change, with the Johns Hopkins University Press as the new publisher. Co-Editors for this new edition are Larry Green, Andrea Gielen, Judith Ottoson Darleen Peterson, and Marshall Kreuter. This edition shows the vital progression from planning and implementation to evaluation and has further refined and simplified the visual representation of the planning model. The “enabling factors” that will spawn more practice based evidence are discussed. To enable practice-based research will mean that end users of a service or intervention must be taught to be leaders and advocates for approaches that are responsive to their needs, preferences and values.

The legacy of the rich, stratified work of Roger Caillois, the multifaceted and complex French scholar and intellectual, seems to have almost solely impinged on game studies through his most popular work, Les Jeux et les Hommes. Translated in English as Man, Play and Games, this is the text which popularized Caillois’ ideas among those who do study and research on games and game cultures today, and which most often appears in publications that attempt to historicize and introduce to the study of games—perhaps on a par with Johan Huizinga’s Homo Ludens. The purpose of this article is to introduce the papers and general purposes of a collected edition that aims to shift the attention of game scholars toward a more nuanced and comprehensive view of Roger Caillois, beyond the textbook interpretations usually received in game studies over the last decade or so.

Résumé :
Abstract Using the Jesuit scholar Louis Cheikho’s (1859–1927) work on pre-Islamic and early Islamic ascetic poetry as a focal point, this article examines two strategies which contemporary and later scholars accused Cheikho of using to falsify the Arabic literary heritage. Cheikho de-Islamized Arabic language texts through editorial interventions, as evinced by his edition of the Dīwān of the Abbasid ascetic poet Abū al-ʿAtāhiya. Furthermore, he overtly laid claim to the past by Christianizing pre-Islamic poetry. In his work al-Naṣrāniyya wa-ādābuhā bayna ʿarab al-jāhiliyya, Cheikho tried to establish the “origins” of Arabic cultural and literary production in Christianity. He did so in response to Arab and European intellectuals who challenged the Christian contribution to Arabic. Above all, he rejected racist ideas embedded in nineteenth-century European philology, notably the denigration of Semitic languages and their speakers based on the “Aryan”/“Semite” binary in Ernest Renan’s (1823–1892) work.

Abstract Elijah of Fulda was the first Ashkenazi Jew in the Early Modern period to write a commentary on the Palestinian Talmud, printed in Amsterdam in 1710. Through a close reading of the nine approbations that preface Elijah’s commentary, this article reconstructs his itinerary throughout Europe and his journey from relative obscurity to the center of the Hebrew and Jewish book world of his day ‐ Amsterdam. The article argues that although other commentaries replaced that of Elijah of Fulda in popularity in subsequent editions, he should be remembered as the first to establish a tradition of Ashkenazic study of the Palestinian Talmud, and as the scholar who shaped the impagination of subsequent editions.

Résumé :
We study the exemplar of the first edition of the «Eneida» (1798) by I. Kotlyarevskyi from the personal library of the famous Slavist Pawel Joseph Šafařik, which is kept in the Dept. of Manuscripts and old prints of the National Museum in Prague Library. The book was offered to P. J. Šafařik by the known Russian and Ukrainian scholar Osyp Bodyanskyi. The influence of «Eneida» on the «Naski Ukrainian Tales» (1835) by O. Bodyanskyi is confirmed by the works of Ivan Franko, where compares the national flavor of both books. We analyse the letters of O. Bodyanskyi to P. Šafařik during 1836–1857 years, published by Leonid Biletskyi (Pragus, 1932) from the archive of P. Šafařik in Prague, as well as the letters of Šafařik to Bodyanskyi during 1838–1857 years, prepared for publication by Petro Lavrov and Mykhaylo Nestorovych Speranskyi (Moscow, 1895). The letter exchange between these scholar-slavists provides grounds for exposing the international and intercultural connections. We define the areas of a common interest of O. Bodyanskyi and P. Šafařik which are: the book exchange, especially the scientific literature on Slavic studies, publishing of Slavic artefacts, providing the information on Ukraine, its language, population, history and literature by O. Bodyanskyi for the «Slavic folk studies» of P. Šafařik. We emphasize on the personal acquaintance of both scholars in Prague in 1837, confirm their contribution in establishing the status of Ukrainian language as an independent one among the other Slavic languages. The also brought into attention the fact that Taras Shevchenko first came across the studies of Šafařik via O. Bodyanskyi, and he regarded the role of the Chech scholar in Slavic revival in the first half of 19ct. We also pay particular attention to the history of the autograph of T. Shevchenko — the beginning of the poem «Ivan Gus» (later, the «Heretic») dedicated to P. Šafařik. This autograph was sent by Vasyl Bilozerskyi to the Narodnyi Dim Library in Lviv in 1863.

Résumé :
Marcel Bataillon is a notable instance of a scholar who found his line early and pursued it unremittingly. His Érasme et I'Espagne was published in 1937; a translation into Spanish appeared in 1950, with a second edition in 1966; but the original work has long been out of print and commonly unavailable. Thanks to Bataillon for ‘most important help’ were expressed in volume vii of P. S. Allen's Opus epistolarum Erasmi Roterodami, published in 1928, and again by Allen's widow in volume xi, published in 1947.

Résumé :
Abstract A new edition of the poems of Catullus was published in 1738 in Venice by a young scholar named Gianfrancesco Corradino dall’Aglio. The title and preface promised a revolutionary edition that would surpass all its predecessors and restore the authentic text of Catullus with the help of an excellent early manuscript discovered in Rome. Corradino dall’Aglio’s grandiose claims attracted criticism and he soon came to be accused of having invented his manuscript sources. This article shows that the accusations go back to a misunderstanding by Scipione Maffei, who accused the editor in 1749 of having invented a liber Maffei. In fact the references to that manuscript stem from Achilles Statius’ commentary of 1566. More recently, that manuscript has been identified by Berthold Ullman with BAV, Ott. lat. 1829, that is, the famous codex Romanus of Catullus. But from the late eighteenth century onwards, the accusations of fraud directed against Corradino dall’Aglio centered on the Roman manuscript that is mentioned in his title and preface. This article shows that that manuscript cannot be identified with any surviving manuscript of Catullus, but due to several factors there is no reason to believe that it was invented by Corradino dall’Aglio. The article closes with an examination of the editorial practice of the young scholar, who turns out to have been a conservative editor of Catullus: he often advocated the reading of the manuscripts against the conjectures of earlier editors.

WILKINSON, ROBERT J. « Immanuel Tremellius' 1569 Edition of the Syriac New Testament ». Journal of Ecclesiastical History 58, no 1 (janvier 2007) : 9–25. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0022046906008980.

Résumé :
Tremellius' 1569 edition of the Syriac New Testament was a quite distinctive product of Heidelberg oriental scholarship, very different from other sixteenth-century editions produced by Catholic scholars. Tremellius produced his edition by first reconstructing an historical grammar of Aramaic and then, in the light of this, vocalising the text of Vat. sir. 16 which he took to be more ancient than that of Widmanstetter's editio princeps. Thus in this way he sought to construct the earliest recoverable linguistic and textual form of the Peshitta. The anonymous Specularius dialogus of 1581 is here used for the first time to corroborate this assessment of Tremellius' achievement and to cast light on the confessional polemics his edition provoked.
