Gonzalez, Gabriel. « Hidden Scars : The Art of PTSD ». Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2013. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5636.

Résumé :
Through the use of mixed media, I explore imagery that reveals the trauma of returning combat veterans, of which I am one, as we try to reintegrate into a society that does not understand the war that still lingers within us. In my work, I depict emotional disturbances that are related to my personal encounters with war. My working process starts by referencing mainstream media imagery, which I juxtapose against harsh images inspired by veterans' drug and alcohol use, trauma and death. My black-and-white pixelated paintings feature the fragmented memories of a hostile combat environment, and although “Out of My Mind” depicts the chaotic emotions associated with PTSD, my whimsical style of illustration suggests a detachment from reality. Whether we call it shell shock, battle fatigue or PTSD, the war-related disorder is real. I want society to be aware of the hidden scars that our veterans carry with them. I do not anticipate my subject matter changing any time soon.

Sobopha, Mgcineni. « Skins, scars, blankets and blood : a pictorial response to the tensions and conflicts that arise from the representation and the practice of Ulwaluko in contemporary South Africa ». Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/25960.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Ulwaluko (the subject of this study) is a Xhosa male initiation or rite of passage normally marked by elaborate ritual ceremonies and authenticated by circumcision. Human longing for ritual is deep, and in our contemporary culture is often frustrated. As an artist working in such an environment, my close association with these 'visible experiences' or contradictions in life has been the source and stimulus of my creative impulse. Ulwaluko is very close to me and an intensely personal aspect of my history and experience. It forms part of my identity and I ascertain very little distance between it and myself, if there can be any. It should be understood that this study is not an anthropological analysis of the Xhosa society and their cultural practices. Rather, it is a combination of autobiography and social commentary in which emphasis on first-hand experience is of primary importance for better understanding of the subject studied. This subjective experience also provides the basis, both conceptual and emotional, of the theoretical and creative process of this body of work. This project premises itself on the contentious issues around ulwaluko as practised by the Xhosa society, with particular reference to communities in Engcobo and Cape Town, and the tension in the creative work is rooted in the conflict and debate around this subject. An attempt is made to examine the impact of colonialism in the displacing and disrupting of this traditional Xhosa cultural practice. Basically, this study is a visual response to and an exploration of the tensions and conflicts that arise from the practice of ulwaluko and its representation in contemporary South Africa. And more important, it is a reflection of the struggle and the affirmation of the self in relation to my work as an artist. However, due to the complexity and sensitivity of this subject, I cannot generalise my understanding and experience of ulwaluko to be that of every Xhosa. The Xhosa people are not a homogeneous group as has been often perceived and discussed in various European discourses that are now under severe criticism by contemporary theorists such as Edward Said. It is a fact that people are different individuals, with dissimilar life experiences. Explaining other people's beliefs and feelings in an objective manner can seem to ignore or does not necessarily take into account, the personal value of emotions, of the joys and sorrows, and even of the transformation of the participants in the practice analysed. In recent years the practice and the visual representation of ulwaluko in South African society, by both 'insiders' and 'outsiders, has stirred concerns and provoked heated moral debates.

Résumé :
Master of Visual Arts
This Dissertation explores the metaphor of Ariadne’s thread in terms of interconnection, when an element from the everyday is used as a locus linking broader concepts of time and space. Such experiences and associations are reflected in the work of Louise Bourgeois, Eva Hesse, Doris Salcedo, Lucio Fontana, Richard Tuttle, Mona Hatoum, Simone Mangos, Anya Gallaccio and Yoshihiro Suda. In relation to my own work, the metaphor of interconnecting thread allows a sense of freedom and journey of discovery. My studio and related research are closely aligned in developing my understanding of interconnection, through my studio process of making and continuing experiences of looking at and interpreting others artists’ work.

Torresin, Chiara <1996&gt. « Genesis and development of Chinese Scar Art ». Master's Degree Thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/19245.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This work analyses the birth and development of Chinese Scar Art of late 1970s and early 1980s. With the end of the Cultural Revolution and the death of Mao Zedong, China went through a period of political and social loosening. This was also reflected in art and literature: following the motto "Seek the truth from facts", new scenarios opened up in the Chinese artistic and literary panorama, especially thanks to the works produced by young people returning from the Down to the Countryside Movement launched by Mao Zedong in 1968. They left little more than teenagers, returned as adults after more than ten years of forced labour and oppression in the countryside, they found a completely changed society. Afterwards, artists began to wonder the reason of what they had experienced, exposing in their works the reality of what they had seen and lived. The advent of Scar Literature first, and Scar Art later, upset public opinion. Based on realism and developed mainly in Sichuan, Scar Art included various currents: the art of the so-called Sichuan School of Painting (Native Soil Art, Melancholy Youth Painting, Contemplative Painting) and Life-stream Art. By analysing the artworks of artists such as Gao Xiaohua, Cheng Conglin, Luo Zhongli, He Duoling, Ai Xuan, Chen Danqing, this thesis researches how they exposed, and then tried to heal, the deepest and most intimate scars of an entire generation, denouncing what they had experienced or saw during the Cultural Revolution.

A SCARA-robot that draws requires a high level of precision and accuracy. This project aims to build a three degree of freedom robot arm that uses inverse kinematics, to draw a picture that has been assigned to it. The project explores the robot’s accuracy as well as its speed. Several measurements were conducted during the project to assess the Robot Arm’s reliability. When the robot makes points in the same position several times, it achieves near-perfect precision, but it has trouble recreating the proper geometrics of the picture being drawn. It may be caused by a variety of factors, it is most likely caused by a play in the timing belt. When the robot performs a circular movement, the problem arises when one of the arms switches its direction. In this paper, the robot’s construction and programming are described.

Sonti, Vuyisile Matshawe. « Bullying of educators by learners : a pastoral challenge ». Diss., University of Pretoria, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/61202.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Aims and objectives The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of bullying of educators by learners they teach, thereby make an effort to improve the methods of dealing with bullying in our schools by introducing a pastoral counselling approach to our schools. The objectives of the study were the following: • To journey with the bullied educators through method of positive deconstruction, so as to give a supportive system and to cease their pain of being shamed and belittled. • To develop a pastoral model to help bullying victims and perpetrators. • To avail to the educators another possible effective method to deal with bullying in our schools, "A formation of pastoral model". • To combat the acts of violence in our society • To create awareness of bullying in our society. This qualitative study endeavoured to answer the following research questions: What is the impact of bullying on the educator? The other forms of bullying like verbal bullying, teasing and threats found hard to investigate, as at times it is the victim's word against the perpetrator's word. The research found that it's not easy to get witnesses, especially from learners. Cases of the bully acts normally get neglected, unless, they ended up being physical. Findings and recommendations The study, presented findings and recommendations. These were to be piloted in one school with the aim to get to buy in of the Department of Education, so to have this approach implemented in all schools and be incorporated in the already existing policies and programmes of intervention. The author aimed at assisting our Department of Education and schools with an alternative method that can improve interventions. The study was feasible, as it was easy to find former educators and learners for interviews and study cases. Not much information was found from schools due to protocol, red tape and right procedure given our schools by the Government as far as information related to learners in our schools. It would have been difficult to complete this study on time if the author was to wait for authorization. Financially the author had to rely on his congregational and diocesan support. The author being a former educator was able therefore to work with adults who are no longer at school but have experienced bullying as former learners and educators. The following points are in the authors mind, as he seeks to research on the bullied, the bullies and the bystander: • Physical bullying is the most feared form of bullying and educators felt it a challenge as they can't retaliate due to policy. • Cyber bullying is the most difficult form of bullying that is highly perpetuated against educators and caused internal wounds and scars that take very long to heal. • Sexual bullying is one of the causes of high pregnancy amongst girls in our school. • Drugs and alcohol are a catalyst to many boys who bully their educators

Résumé :
The purpose of this thesis was to create a robot that through the use of visual recognition and robotics could play chess. The idea for this project came from the fact that there is an increasing demand for smart robots that can make their own decisions in a changing environment, and the fact that chess has recently seen a surge of new players. The optimal design of the arm making the moves was decided to be of SCARA type, which is a common robotic arm that excels in pick-and-place operations. The movement of the arm was driven by two stepper motors connected to a Raspberry Pi and an external power supply. Movement in the Z-direction was achieved through the use of a servo motor driving a gear rack vertically. A camera was placed above the chessboard, and through the use of numerous programs and functions, images were converted to chess notation which was then sent to a chess engine running on the Raspberry Pi. The visual recognition worked optimally when the chessboard was well and evenly lit. When lighting was poor, values that defined colors could be changed, allowing for proper evaluation of the colors, however when the illuminance dropped below 15 lux the blue pieces became indistinguishable from the black squares and therefore the visual recognition stopped working.

Isaacs, Sofie. « How hardwired are we against threats ? : An EDA study comparing modern and evolutionary fear-relevant stimuli ». Thesis, Högskolan i Skövde, Institutionen för biovetenskap, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:his:diva-13141.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The threat superiority effect refers to an ability to quickly and efficiently detect threatening cues in one’s environment. Hence, ensuing and appropriate behavioral defense responses entail greater chances of survival for an organism. Some researchers argue that natural selection has led us to automatically prioritize threats that would have been salient during the period of evolutionary adaptation; as for example snakes. However, others have also argued that activation of our defense response system is more flexible, thus able to also be triggered to dangers of more recent age: such as guns or airplane crashes. The present study has sought to impact this debate, by measuring the electrodermal activity (EDA) – more specifically the skin conductance responses (SCRs) – of subjects who were visually presented with both evolutionary (snakes and spiders) and modern (guns and knives) fear-relevant stimuli. The results demonstrated no significant difference between the two categories within subjects, suggesting that both evolutionary and modern threatening cues activate the defense response system in a similar manner. Although the results are preliminary, and would need further verification in higher powered studies, they can be seen to favor the view that our defense response system is flexibly adaptive in relation to the age of a given threat.

Résumé :
The purpose of this study was to provide a basis for understanding among Tech Prep and School-to-Work change agents, and educational leaders, of the role that Discipline-Based Art Education (DBAE) can perform as a part of the core curriculum, within the framework of these reform movements. The literature indicated that the federally supported Tech Prep and School-to-Work reform movements were not acquainted with DBAE reform initiative which were supported by the Getty Education Institute for the Arts through the work of Regional Institutes. Therefore, they had no ideas about the possible worth of art as an education core component. Also, DBAE was not acquainted with Tech Prep and School-to-Work and therefore had established no common terminology to communicate the power of what they do in a manner which was relevant to that audience. The DBAE Regional Institutes provided individuals to assist in the development and validation of the study tools, and to participate in the pilot study. The Regional Institutes also identified the 10 Discipline-Based Art Education experts who composed the national Delphi panel for the study. The findings were reported according to research questions. They show the national Delphi panels' perceptions of which SCANS skills can be developed by Content Standards and Performance Standards from the National Standards for [Visual] Arts Education. The study concluded that: 1) there is a relationship between the Content and Performance Standards taken from the National Standards for [Visual] Arts Education and the SCANS skills; 2) SCANS Basic skills, Thinking skills, Resources skills, Information skills and Systems skills could be developed through the achievement of the Performance Standards of the National Standards for [Visual] Arts Education; and 3) the relationship between the SCANS Workplace Know-How skills and the National Standards for [Visual] Art Education was validated by a national Delphi panel. Recommendations were made for DBAE, Tech Prep and School-to-Work, and Future Studies.

Smith, Austin. « The Red Scare and the BI's Quest for Power : The Soviet Ark as Political Theater ». Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2013. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/6021.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The Red Scare of 1919-1920 has been presented as a wave of anti-Radical hysteria that swept post WWI America; a hysteria to which the state reluctantly capitulated to by arresting Radicals and deporting those alien Radicals they deemed most threatening. This presentation, however, is ludicrous when the motivations of the state and its conservative allies are examined. The truth of the matter was that almost all of the people targeted by the Red Scare represented no significant threat to the institutions of the United States and were merely targeted for holding Leftwing ideas, or being connected to a group that did. This work examines how the Red Scare deportations were used as a performance to gain power and funding for the Bureau of Investigation and how the Bureau sought to use this performance to set itself up as the premier anti-Radical agency in the United States. While the topic of the Red Scare of 1919-1920 has been thoroughly covered, most works on the subject attempt to cover the whole affair or even address it as part of a larger study of political repression in the United States. In these accounts these authors do not see the Red Scare as a performance, which culminated in the Soviet Ark deportations, put on by the BI in order to fulfill its goal of expanding its own importance. This work addresses the events leading up to climactic sailing of the Soviet Ark, as political theater put on by the BI and its allies in order to impress policy makers and other conservative interest groups. Since the Soviet Ark deportations were the climax of the Red Scare performance, this work addresses the event as a theatrical production and follows a three act dramatic structure. It begins by exploring the cast of characters, both individuals and organizations, in the BI's performance. This is followed by an analysis of the rising action of the BI, and other reactionary groups in the evolution of their grand performance. Finally the deportations serve as the climax of the Red Scare in this performance that the BI and its allies would use to justify an expansion of their influence. Through the use of government records, biographies, and first hand accounts, this work explores the Soviet Ark deportations as the high point of the first Red Scare, the point in which the BI and its allies took their quest for expanded power the furthest before having to change course. The grand performance that the Bureau of Investigation put on is looked at, not as a response to placate others – something the BI was merely swept up in – but as a performance that they designed to meet the specific needs of their campaign to grow their agency, a performance for which they were willing to draft those that represented no real threat despite the consequences to those individuals.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The Social Cognition and Object Relations Scale—Global (SCORS-G) is a relatively new scoring system for the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) that provides information about an individual's functioning in a variety of domains, including intrapsychic and interpersonal. Participants in this archival study had been administered a variety of measures as part of a routine clinical assessment, including the TAT, Rorschach, Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2, and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale. Selected TAT stories were rescored using current SCORS-G scoring criteria. This dissertation evaluated the factor structure of the SCORS-G in an outpatient sample with a principal component analysis (PCA), finding support for a two-component solution. The SCORS-G was then compared to well-established measures of personality functioning, social cognition, and object relations using correlational analyses, with mixed results. Lastly, support was found for using the SCORS-G as a tool for discriminating individuals with a history of violent or problematic relationships from those without such a history. Implications for card selection based on card pull and the impact of bland protocols were explored.

Résumé :
When the national Democratic Party began to transform to progressive era politics because of the New Deal, conservative reactionaries turned against the social welfare programs and used red scare tactics to discredit liberal and progressive New Deal Democrat professors in higher education. This process continued during the Second World War, when the conservatives in Texas lumped fascism and communism in order to anchor support and fire and threaten professors and administrators for advocating or teaching “subversive doctrine.” In 1948 Texas joined other southern states and followed the Dixiecrat movement designed to return the Democratic Party to its original pro-business and segregationist philosophy. Conservatives who wanted to bolster their Cold Warrior status in Texas also played upon the fears of spreading communism during the Cold War, and passed several repressive laws intended to silence unruly students and entrap professors by claiming they advocated communist doctrine. The fight culminated during the Civil Rights movement, when conservatives in the state attributed subversive or communist behavior to civil rights organizations, and targeted higher education to protect segregated universities. In order to return the national Democratic Party to the pro-business, segregationist philosophy established at the early twentieth century, conservatives used redbaiting tactics to thwart the progressivism in the state’s higher education facilities.

Résumé :
Between 1947 and 1954, the Texas State Legislature enacted a series of eight highly restrictive anti-communist laws. Designed to protect political, military, and economic structures in the state from communist infiltration, the laws banned communists from participating the political process, required registration of all communists who entered the state and eventually outlawed the Communist Party. Drawn from perceptions about Cold War events, such as the Truman Doctrine and the Korean War, and an expanding economy inside of Texas, members of the state legislature perceived that communism represented a threat to their state. However, when presented with the opportunity to put the laws into action during the 1953 Port Arthur Labor Strike, the state government failed to bring any charges against those who they labeled as communists. Instead of actually curtailing the limited communist presence inside of the state, members of the state government instead used the laws to leverage political control throughout the state by attacking labor, liberals in education and government, and racial minorities with accusations of communism.

Jacobs, Donovan George. « An appropriateness review of urgent in-hours nontrauma CT brain scans at a single tertiary referral centre in South Africa - are we scanning rationally ? » Master's thesis, Faculty of Health Sciences, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/30814.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Aim: To determine if urgent, non-trauma in-hours CT head scan requests in the GSH department of radiology are being appropriately requested and completed, as well as determining the radiation dose for each study. Secondly, to make recommendations to improve local practice based on the findings of this study. Methods: A retrospective study was undertaken of 100 qualifying in-hours urgent, nontrauma CT head scans completed at the GSH department of radiology between 01/10/2015 and 31/03/2016. All qualifying CT request data and dose records were collected and anonymised, after ethical and institutional approval. Three radiologists at GSH were enlisted to review the request information. Each request was reviewed and categorised by both the researcher and each consultant individually to determine the indication and appropriateness. The researcher used previously published, objective criteria (Rothrock Criteria) to review requests, while the radiologists used their own interpretation of accepted local practice. The researcher recorded positive and negative scan outcomes, radiation doses and calculated the Effective Dose (ED) for each study. Results were recorded in Excel and statistical analysis using weighted Kappa analysis was undertaken. Results: Study cohort CT scans made up 15.6% of the total emergency head CT scans over the study period. The mean patient age was 52.3 years (range: 18.8-87.4 years). One-third (34; 34%) were older than 60 years with 33 (97%) having at least 2 positive Rothrock criteria. Most CT scans (86%) consisted of a single study, while the remaining comprised two or more. Average ED was 3.27 mSv (range: 1.03-4.33 mSv). 52 (52%) participants had abnormal CT findings, independent of age-group. Discrepancy in assigning study indication and appropriateness between the researcher and consultants was present, with at best moderate agreement (weighted-Kappa range 0.09-0.52). The researcher showed slight to fair agreement between scan outcome and request appropriateness using the Rothrock criteria (weighted kappa 0.20; 95% CI: 0.06-0.35, p=.00861), while the consultant consensus performed slightly worse (0.10; 95% CI: -0.05-0.26, p=.19728). Conclusion: Retrospective application of the Rothrock criteria to patient referrals produced better correlation with outcome than current departmental practice. However, there is at best moderate agreement between consultants with regard to classification of referrals which could negatively affect the application of Rothrock criteria in practice. Incorporating the Rothrock criteria into published departmental guidelines, in conjunction with other interventions to improve clinician requesting practices, is recommended. The formation of a Quality Assurance team and the use of existing dose-reducing techniques may assist in reducing radiation doses further.

This work is an use-wear analysis of the upper sequence of Grotte Mandrin in Mediterranean France (from the 55th to 43rd millennium). In this sequence, the Neronian level of Grotte Mandrin appears as an anomaly, both from a technical and a functional perspective. Its profusion of points and their not only microlithic but also standardized character prompts reflection on the purpose of these productions. What is the meaning of this signature, combining standardization and real microlithization within a single unit of this vast archaeological sequence? Through a functional study specifically oriented toward research, determination and understanding of the associations of impact scars, a method of approach, an impact study, is presented here, and constructed from a systematic, original experiment. An impactological study of the Mandrin E points reveals that at least 15.5% of them were used as weapons. In the absence of any other criteria revealing other functions, and in view of the exceptionally high rate of impacted pieces, we must consider whether all of these small objects belong directly and exclusively to the sphere of armaments. The extreme reduction of these micro- and nanopoints results in a particularly weak inert weight that can only be compensated for by a propulsion system with very high kinetic energy. Attention has therefore been focused on the mode of propulsion used to make these very small, sometimes less than a centimeter, points effective and efficient. The results lead to the conclusion that only a propulsion system such as the bow would be able to offset the low kinetic energy of all of these small impacted elements discovered at Mandrin E

Résumé :
Two analyses of data recorded in proton-proton collisions at the ATLAS detector in 2012 are presented in this thesis. The first pertains to the beam separation (van der Meer) scans required to calibrate the absolute luminosity. An estimate is made for the size of the correction needed to the standard van der Meer calibration method, which assumes that the proton bunch density profiles are factorisable. This is done by observing and modelling the evolution of various beam spot phenomena during the separation scans. The second analysis described is a series of measurements of the Z/gamma cross-section, differential in the phi star observable, for different ranges of the boson invariant mass and absolute rapidity. In particular the events in which the boson decays to electron-positron pairs are considered. The phi star observable is defined in terms of the well-measured lepton directions and enables a probe of initial state gluon radiation in the non-perturbative regime of QCD.

Hese deficits coexist in the acute phase of a depressive episode and interfere with decision-making and goal-directed behaviors, and the associated feeling of effort. They appear to persist in periods of clinical remission, decreasing the quality of the therapeutic and functional response and lately worsening the prognosis of the disorder. The aim of this work is to identify objectively measurable neurocognitive markers in clinical practice, and to study their association with the prognosis of a depressive episode, in order to better predict remission and potentially to optimize therapeutic prescribing strategies for patients accordingly. The impairment of neurocognitive processes related to reward constitutes a first vulnerability marker for major depressive disorder (MDD): in a study assessing the production of motor effort in order to obtain a reward, depressed patients had a deficit in production of effort, unlike healthy subjects. Such deficit in incentive motivation - a process underpinned by the activation of ventral cortico-striatal circuits in healthy subjects - may constitute a specific dimension of MDD. It participates in the decision-making and action processes impairments and is associated with – and possibly a consequence of- more specifically cognitive deficits. In a study assessing several cognitive functions in a large cohort of depressed patients, the persistence of psychomotor retardation after 6 to 8 weeks of treatment - in patients considered as being in clinical remission - was positively and independently correlated with the number of past depressive episodes, thus constituting a marker of "cumulative" marker of past depressive episodes. Finally, in a literature review on the progressive evolution of cognitive deficits in MDD, we discussed the existence of a “neurotoxic” effect of the lifetime accumulation of depressive episodes on neurocognitive deficits and its consequences on disease prognosis (increased risk of incomplete functional/clinical remission, relapses, evolution towards dementia). One of the main interest in identifying clinical and cognitive markers of vulnerability is to highlight their capacity to predict the course of a depressive episode-or disorder. In a study based on a cohort of more than 500 depressed patients, a measurement of attention (d2 attention test) was able to significantly and independently predict the subsequent course towards complete remission (clinical and functional) and to constitute a trait -marker of depression, easy to use in clinical practice. Other cognitive markers (such as executive functions) have shown high predictive values for therapeutic response, comparable to those provided by imaging or electrophysiology markers, according to the results of a recent meta-analysis, that emphasizes the interest of using them in patient’s follow-up. Finally, in order to better assess the prognosis of depressive disorder, we have shown that Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) diagnosis criteria - which nevertheless represents a specific depressive disorder with well-known physiopathology substrates (construction validity) - had a low predictive validity, prompting to consider this disorder as a temporary expression of a mood disorder, rather than a specific disorder. The identification of clinical tools measuring motivational and cognitive deficits in clinical routine and predicting the course of a depressive episode or disorder represents a major challenge in the improvement of personalized therapeutic management and the long-term prognosis in depressed patients

Résumé :
The ONE Exhibition explores an era in American history marked by intense government sponsored anti-gay persecution and the genesis of the LGBT equality movement. The study begins during World War II, continues through the McCarthy era and the founding of the nation’s first gay magazine, and ends in 1958 with the first gay Supreme Court case in U.S. history. Central to the story is ONE The Homosexual Magazine, and its founders, as they embarked on a quest for LGBT equality by establishing the first ongoing nationwide forum for gay people in the U.S., and challenged the government’s right to engage in and encourage hateful and discriminatory practices against the LGBT community. Then, when the magazine was banned by the Post Office, the editors and staff took the federal government to court. As such, ONE, Incorporated v. Olesen became the first Supreme Court case in U.S. history that featured the taboo subject of homosexuality, and secured the 1st Amendment right to freedom of speech for the gay press. Thus, ONE magazine and its founders were an integral part of a small group of activists who established the foundations of the modern LGBT equality movement.

Résumé :
This research project investigates the possibilities of visual art as an effective means of expressing the lived experience of trauma and subliminal memory without direct reference to any specific event. The projects theoretical and practical research explores the delineation between the intentional expression of repressed emotions and the unintentional presence of suggestive elements within visual works of art. The practical work considers that we construct our understanding of the world through memories and visual (or visualised) cues attached to language. The motivation for this project stems from the diaries my father wrote during his incarceration as a POW in WWII. Although they form a tangible link to the experiences of being a soldier and prisoner during WWII, it is the emotional aftermath which creates the catalyst for this research. His work as a potter and sculptor inspires the questions that form the boundaries of the research. Artists who have been inspirational for the studio research during this project include contemporary artists Doris Salcedo and William Kentridge as well as historic artist Otto Dix. The aim of the studio research has been to work through the medium of printmaking to examine the visual expression of the subliminal emotive responses that traumatic events can render in a person's psyche. Mechanisms of plate sequence, site specific arrangement and tonal variation contribute to the development of prints on paper and clay. In the exhibition work, which comprises of over 80 prints of primarily etchings and lithographs, the literal and sense memories are carried through time and place informing and affecting the interpretation and emotional engagement with each encountered environment. An installation utilising audio recording and raw clay is also in the exhibition and these works are supported by bodies of work that relate to the questions posed in the project.

Résumé :
Nonconvex optimization is NP-hard, even the goal is to compute a local minimizer. In applied disciplines, however, nonconvex problems abound, and simple algorithms, such as gradient descent and alternating direction, are often surprisingly effective. The ability of simple algorithms to find high-quality solutions for practical nonconvex problems remains largely mysterious. This thesis focuses on a class of nonconvex optimization problems which CAN be solved to global optimality with polynomial-time algorithms. This class covers natural nonconvex formulations of central problems in signal processing, machine learning, and statistical estimation, such as sparse dictionary learning (DL), generalized phase retrieval (GPR), and orthogonal tensor decomposition. For each of the listed problems, the nonconvex formulation and optimization lead to novel and often improved computational guarantees. This class of nonconvex problems has two distinctive features: (i) All local minimizer are also global. Thus obtaining any local minimizer solves the optimization problem; (ii) Around each saddle point or local maximizer, the function has a negative directional curvature. In other words, around these points, the Hessian matrices have negative eigenvalues. We call smooth functions with these two properties (qualitative) X functions, and derive concrete quantities and strategy to help verify the properties, particularly for functions with random inputs or parameters. As practical examples, we establish that certain natural nonconvex formulations for complete DL and GPR are X functions with concrete parameters. Optimizing X functions amounts to finding any local minimizer. With generic initializations, typical iterative methods at best only guarantee to converge to a critical point that might be a saddle point or local maximizer. Interestingly, the X structure allows a number of iterative methods to escape from saddle points and local maximizers and efficiently find a local minimizer, without special initializations. We choose to describe and analyze the second-order trust-region method (TRM) that seems to yield the strongest computational guarantees. Intuitively, second-order methods can exploit Hessian to extract negative curvature directions around saddle points and local maximizers, and hence are able to successfully escape from the saddles and local maximizers of X functions. We state the TRM in a Riemannian optimization framework to cater to practical manifold-constrained problems. For DL and GPR, we show that under technical conditions, the TRM algorithm finds a global minimizer in a polynomial number of steps, from arbitrary initializations.

The thesis develops a four axis SCARA robot arm using Delta servo motors and pressure control element. The SCARA robot arm uses PLC-based control system to realize high stability and high precious, and uses vision processing technology to identify color and shape of the objects. In the robot structure, we use the Delta ASDA-MS system as the control core. The ASDA-MS system controls the AC servomotors through the driving devices. The motion trajectories of Delta servo motors are programmed, through the Programmable Logic Controller and motion planning agency itself. The first and second axis are horizontal rotation by two Delta servomotor drivers. Then install the ball screw spline in the second axis of the robot arm through Delta servomotor drivers. And reach Z-axis rotation and linear motion mode. The gripper is driven by a pressure control element, and catches the assigned object. The robot arm can finish the control functions of point-to-point control and continuous path control. Users can program these functions of the robot arm on the user interface. In the modern community, various robot arms are widely used in different industrial areas. In general, the engineer manually set target point and pathway via the computer in advanced so that the robot arm can strictly move along with the preset path. If there exists a problem of visiting multiple targets, the preset path cannot be ensured that is the best arrangement. In order to improve the production efficiency, the moving cost of the robot arm needs to be reduced to carry out our study purpose. In this paper, we will present an experiment of locking screws to clearly introduce our proposed algorithm. Each point needs to be passed only once for the overall experimental procedure. Obviously, this is a typical travelling salesman problem (TSP). To be honest, the previous algorithms can only solve some problems in 2D space. However, this study is applied to cope with the issue of optimal path of locking screws in 3D space by the Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm (SCARA). The heights of screw holes are different when the detected object is 3D structure. Then, it is observed that the path between two points may be obstructed by certain obstacles to seriously disturb the normal work of a robot arm. In order to solve this problem, Kinect is used to build the 3D model of the object and simultaneously detect screw holes based on the image processing method. To avoid the robot arm hitting the obstacle on the path, we have to utilize avoiding algorithm to stop this situation appearance. The avoiding algorithm based on the visibility graph algorithm has been proposed in this study in order to let the general visibility graph algorithm transfer to 3D space. Namely, we propose a strategy to add new nodes so that it can help us easily calculate the moving cost of each point. Substituting the moving cost into TSP to calculate the optimal path where the TSP problem can be solved by the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and 2-Opt algorithms. Finally, transferring the image coordinate to SCARA coordinate to let the robot arm complete the whole task.

This thesis presents a integral design method for the integration of "DFM"(Design for Manufacturing) and "DFV"(Design for Verification) that gradually complete the development from simulation to actual verification. In the aspect of kinematics of horizontal joint, the 2D model is established by the mathematical derivation and the analysis of the left and right arm characteristics of the "Jacobian" kinematic, and integrated into the verification design. The Electromechanical integration of the system is combined SCARA’s characteristics, automatic control components, sensors, electrical, pneumatic circuit design and software programming for implement, and then lead the robotic arm to run the coordinates and movement path with proper accuracy, efficiency and reliability. In handling, the study presents a methold to control robotic arm by modern smartphone based on WLAN(Wireless Local Area Network). In the verification of coordinates precision, the remote system collects the robotic controller operating data via LAN(Local Area Network), and automatically import to "Ppk" standard algorithm form for precision analysis. As for the motion trajectory, the SCARA drew characters on self-designed paper by the procedures of "DRL"( DELTA Robot Language) program. This research also proposes a design of automatic palletizing simulate layout using the SCARA, and its framework of "IoT"(Internet of Things) is used LAN and WLAN(WiFi) to build the near-end and remote application. abstract: The relationship between Chinese modern and contemporary artistic creation and the national sovereignty of China is a worthy subject of debate. Within it, modernism and intellectual/artistic subjectivity are two necessary starting points. However, there is still a good deal of uncertainty around these two points. First, can the modernization process of China be accepted as the general meaning of modernization? Second, are some Chinese modern and contemporary artists actually modern intellectuals? Based on clarification of the above two uncertainties, this thesis is an attempt to argue that the Chinese artists who regard themselves, their artworks and creations, as intellectual, reflect the collision domain between themselves and the political entity of national sovereignty in China: the communist regime controlled by the CCP, Chinese Communist Party中國共産黨. In this thesis, three chapters discuss the relationship between Chinese modern and contemporary art and the CCP. In my theoretical exposition, I argue that the artistic/intellectual subjectivity of modern Chinese artists gradually developed and changed during the conflict and struggle with the Communist rule. In the first chapter, I introduce the biography and artistic creation of Chinese literati painters under the communist rule, exemplified by Wu Hufan吳湖帆. I analyze and demonstrate how the subjectivity of the traditional literati gradually lost strength under the pressure of nationalism, the disenchantment with modernization, and communism. In the second chapter, I focus on the Scar Art art movement of the 1970s to the 1980s, as well as representative artists and their works in this direction of art, such as Cheng Conglin程叢林 and Gao Xiaohua高小華. In this chapter, I use feminism and Foucault's political-philosophical theories to explain these visual expressions of the memory of historical trauma in Scar Art during this period. In Chapter 3, by discussing the works of two artists, He Gong何工 and Ai Weiwei艾未未, in the context of Foucault’s political philosophy, I argue that artists how to express their intellectual subjectivity and political resistance through their contributions to Chinese contemporary art.
