Résumé :
My PhD dissertation (Guiney Yallop, 2008) is an arts-based, autoethnographic, queer study. I wrote poetry to generate the data for my research. The first section of my dissertation consists of 46 poems, the first 23 of which are my Catholic terrain and the other 23 are my Education terrain. The poems are followed by an exegesis divided into 12 pauses. This article comes from the fifth pause where I explained the process I engaged in while writing the poetry and when I was putting the poems together in my dissertation. While each writer has her or his own processes when writing, I believe that making our processes explicit allows us and our readers to more fully appreciate how we construct our writing. As well as reflecting on the process, the reader may consider the content and the form of the writing; what are the poems saying and how are they saying it?

Résumé :
The framing strategies of social movements are typically characterized by movement actors conceptually and rhetorically expanding frames. We contend that movement actors also contract frames by deliberately excluding frame elements. We add the concept of contraction to the frame-alignment construct and show how frame contraction allows for enhanced theorizing about the dialectical and dynamic nature of social movements. We describe three distinct frame contraction processes, frame removal, frame minimization, and frame restriction, which characterize common frame contraction strategies. We illustrate frame contraction by examining the framing approaches used by the United Auto Workers as they bargained with automakers across two rounds of negotiations in 1945–46 and 1949–1950. We show how frame contraction articulates undertheorized complexities in changes to social movement frames. We also illustrate potential blind spots, biases, or distortions that may arise absent the frame contraction construct.

Résumé :
We have all heard the quote “A picture is worth a thousand words” when describing how much information can really be represented by a single image. Many of you may have written and published pages of results all based sometimes on a single piece of important data such as an electron micrograph. Of course, if one image is worth a thousand words, as the saying goes, how much would 30 or more be worth? With the advent of better performing electronics and development of newer CCD (charge couple device) technology, it is now possible to extend the famous saying and complete it with “but a movie tells the whole story”. By extending the single acquired image into a series of fast-acquired frames, movie creation is possible. This capability allows us to record dynamic events in many different applications, leading towards sharing the sequence of images and telling a more complete story that cannot be done with one image alone. A brief background on how this technique is used in electron microscopy follows.

Résumé :
Abstract The study reported in this article investigated the design and implementation of a flexible bilingual mathematics assessment that allows for translanguaging whenever needed, to help the mathematics knowledge of emergent bilingual students emerge. The assessment included 10 mathematics items, six selected-response and four constructed-response items, which were enhanced with dual language supports such as seeing and listening to the items, writing or saying a response, and showing synonyms for certain words, all in English, Spanish, or any combination of both languages. These supports allow test takers to draw on their entire linguistic repertoire and their full range of linguistic practices to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in mathematics. Ten emergent bilingual students participated in cognitive interviews designed to collect data on usability and perception of the usefulness of the dual language supports. It was found that students were able to use the available supports strategically whenever needed, used their entire linguistic repertoire to complete the items, and had a positive perception of the supports.

Résumé :
This is a paper about different ways of revealing materials, and a theory of organization. It moves through a kaleidoscope of perspectives which reveal the tower crane as made through its relations with a series of different ways of seeing – engineering and mathematics, capitalist economics, and a workplace labour process. It employs a wide variety of sources, including some interviews that I have done with crane drivers. I then move into an account of the modernist fascination with technology, particularly Soviet constructivism. The latter provides the theoretical scaffolding which allows me to see the crane as a temporary stabilization of structure, and structure as an arrangement of planes and lines of force which allows certain moves just as it prevents others. This is a way of saying that an adequate understanding of ‘organization’ requires thinking multiples and relations. Nodding towards Deleuze and Guattari towards the end, I suggest that cranes are good to think with for these multiple purposes, but that any assemblage would do.

Résumé :
The subject of this research is Bolshoye Boldino as the landmark of the Russian culture. The goal is to give characteristics to the image of Bolshoye Boldino established in the Russian literature, as well as analyze the possibility of formation of the local text. It is proven that constant traits of Boldino, such as solitude, isolation from the big world, simplicity of life, and vagueness of time boundaries, were formed based on the letters, works, and events in the life of A. S. Pushkin, and later comprehended by other authors. It is noted that the collection of texts about Bolshoye Boldino consists of the saying and interviews, fiction and folklore compositions. The research material includes the poems and an saying M. S. Petrovyh, Y. V. Drunina, D. S. Samoilov and B. A. Akhmadulina. The conclusion is made that in the Russian culture, Bolshoye Boldino resembles the place of commemoration of A. S. Pushkin, as well as the space that allows a person to achieve comprehension and mindfulness. In the aforementioned works, the image of Bolshoye Boldino in ambivalent: the space is interpreted as a place of salvation or as the origin of the tragic events in life of the poet. The author assumes that the Boldino text is in the process of formation and has low intensity, which is substantiated by its remoteness of from the cultural centers.

The concept of Research Gestaltis proposed to explain the transformations that scientific theories undergo in their development without losingtheir identity. The advantages of the Gestalt of research over other approaches such as Kuhn's paradigms, Lakatos' Scientific Research Programs, Laudan's research traditions, Foucault's episteme or Feyerabend's global theories consist,in the first place,in that its application is not the product of a convention of scientists. Secondly, it handles the concept of truth as an adequacy between saying and being and not as a truth by consensus. Finally, it allows to understand the changes in scientific theories not as absolute breaks where the new theory does not contain anything of the old one, but manages to reconcile scientific tradition with innovation.

What does the (possible) truth of a metaphor consist in? The first part of this paper is a critical analysis of the following model: A metaphorical statement is true if and only if it somehow leads to the recognition of literal truths. This model of metaphorical truth as indirect literal truth is not utterly inadequate, but it fails to account for certain central features of the metaphorical: the openness of the interpretation of living metaphors, the phenomenon of the so called metaphorical chains (or nets), the non-propositional aspects of many metaphors, and the active, creative role of the interpreter. In the second part I develop an alternative model, based on: a) a pragmatist methodology with respect to the truth-issue in general (truth without representation), b) Goodman's concept of rightness, c) the difference between saying and showing, and d) the idea, that a good metaphor creates a new context which not only allows us to say something new concerning the topic in question, but which allows us to treat the topic in a new manner.

Résumé :
This case study investigated athletes’ use of a specific social-media platform—Twitter. Social media are a rising force in marketing and have been fully embraced by the sport industry, with teams, leagues, coaches, athletes, and managers establishing presences. Primarily these presences have been focused on Twitter, a microblogging site that allows users to post their personal thoughts in 140 characters or less. Athletes, in particular, have engaged in tweeting at a fast pace, which raises the question, What are they saying? This case study investigated the tweets of athletes over a 7-d period in an attempt to answer that question. The findings indicate that athletes are talking predominantly about their personal lives and responding to fans’ queries through Twitter. The results indicate that Twitter is a powerful tool for increasing fan–athlete interaction.

Résumé :
The article is devoted to the analysis of translatability of the French ethnophraseological unit “c’est pas grave” into Russian. Its ethnophraseological nature has been established according to Bert Peeters’ criteria: it has to be regarded as “typical French” by speakers of other languages, used as a title of movies, songs, books or articles. 964 translations of this expression into Russian were analyzed, and 40 possible variants were identified. In most cases, the translation of the phraseological unit into Russian is represented by affirmative constructions, in spite of the fact that it is negative in French, as for instance “это нормально / все нормально” (it’s ok; everything is fine). Some translations are sentences in the imperative mood: “забудь” (forget it), “не волнуйтесь” (don’t worry). The paper describes each type of translation. In the conclusion the phraseological unit “c’est pas grave” is presented in Natural Semantic Metalanguage which allows us to conclude that this saying is used after some event happened in which the speaker and his/her partner are involved. The speaker says that the event is not bad, has no negative consequences and that it is not worth worrying about. She / he asks the other communicant not to worry, thus implying that she / he himself / herself will not think about it anymore. The frequency of this saying, the fact, that it is regarded as “typically French” by others, and a large number of translation variants prove its ethnolinguistic character and its link with hypothetical French cultural values, which can be described as “insouciance”.

Résumé :
The textbook and the workshop were prepared taking into account the content of the curriculum of the discipline "Russian language and culture of speech". The selection of theoretical material, its volume, style of presentation (popular science), comments - all takes into account not only the non—philological profile of the recipients' training, but also the nature of errors, as well as the degree of their frequency in the speech of ordinary native speakers of the Russian language. The structure of the textbook (the theoretical part divided into sections; thematically grouped control questions; training exercises for each section) allows you to freely navigate in it. Illustrative material includes examples from mass media, prose and poetic texts; statements of public and political figures, figures of science and culture, art, as well as proverbs and sayings. According to the same principle, the material for training exercises was selected. Meets the requirements of the federal state educational standards of higher education of the latest generation. For non-philology students, as well as individuals working independently to improve the culture of their own speech.

Résumé :
This chapter is concerned with what is often taken for granted in the Romantic lyric and in Leopardi’s poetry in particular: that is, the act of speech in a poetic context, and its realization in the figure of voice. The focus is on the poet’s speaking, that speech which presents itself immediately, before any reference, and that, for the reader or listener, always re-presents itself, looping, so that even when we are absorbed in the reading of what the poem says, we never entirely succeed in forgetting its saying. This is one of the capital differences between lyric poetry—at least, in the affective, strongly personalized, version that it assumes in the eyes of Leopardi—and narrative forms; for while the reading of a novel allows us to enter into another, entirely imagined and imaginable reality, which leaves its sources and its departure points behind it, the poem continually reminds us that there is a someone or a something that is saying it.

Résumé :
This exhibition catalogue accompanies Gilded: Contemporary Artists Explore Value and Worth, organized by the Weatherspoon Art Museum at UNC Greensboro, on view September 10, 2022 - April 8, 2023. Across time and cultures, gold has served as a metaphor for what we value most. Symbolically, it stands in for goodness, excellence, brilliance, and wealth. He has a heart of gold. She is going for gold. It shone like gold. They struck gold. Found in crowns and regalia that bestow power, rings that signal matrimony, and currency traded among peoples, the metal has profound social significance. Across the arts, craftspeople have long pounded gold into thin sheets called leaves, which are applied in a process called gilding. In realms of the spiritual, gilding illuminates sacred texts, gives otherworldly luster to holy spaces, and allows religious sculptures to shine. While we most often associate gold leaf with historic traditions, the material appears frequently in the work of contemporary artists. Specifically, the artists represented in this exhibition turn to gilding as a means to reconsider our value systems. Gilding images of graffiti and sidewalks, cardboard boxes and architectural fragments, they ask us to see the beauty in what we so often overlook and honor that which we so often throw away. Gilding images of people—often those who have been disempowered or forgotten—they ask us to hold up our collective humanity. If, as the saying goes, “all that glitters is not gold,” the artists represented here offer an inverse proposition: perhaps that which does not always shine is most worthy of our attention. Gilded features the work of Radcliffe Bailey, Larissa Bates, william cordova, Angela Fraleigh, Gajin Fujita, Nicholas Galanin, Liz Glynn, Shan Goshorn, Sherin Guirguis, Titus Kaphar, Hung Liu, James Nares, Ronny Quevedo, Shinji Turner-Yamamoto, Danh Vo, Stacy Lynn Waddell, and Summer Wheat. After its Weatherspoon debut, the project will travel to the Hunter Museum of Art in Chattanooga, TN and the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth in Hanover, NH.

Delgado, Melvin. State-Sanctioned Violence. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190058463.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The role and function of the state is not to harm its residents but rather to help them develop their potential and meet their basic human needs. The importance of violence is well attested to by Oxford University Press devoting a book series on interpersonal violence. However, state-sanctioned violence in the United States is not, for example. The saying “The truth will set you free, but first it will make you miserable” comes to mind in writing this book because it holds personal meaning that goes beyond being a social worker and a person of color (Latinx). The basic premise and interconnectedness of the themes in this book were reinforced and expanded in the course of writing. Bonilla-Silva (2019, p. 14) states, “We are living, once again, in strange racial times,” which, indeed, is true. The hope is that readers appreciate the numerous threads between themes, some of which have not gotten close attention by the general public and scholars. Harris and Hodge (2017), for example, adeptly interconnect environmental, food, and school-to-pipeline social injustice issues among urban youth of color, illustrating how oppressions converge. Future scholarship will connect even more dots to create the mosaic that constitutes state-sanctioned violence. It was a relief to see the extent of scholarship on the topics addressed in this book. Bringing together this literature, public reports, and the experiences from those currently dealing with state-sponsored violence allowed for a consistent narrative to unfold. Writing a book is always a process of discovery. There is a body of scholarship to buttress the central arguments of this book, but no such literature addressing the structural interconnectedness of the types of state-sanctioned violence for social work. The sociopolitical, interactional consequences of place, time, people, and events set a social-political context that is understood by social workers and makes this mission distinctive because of this grounding. Viewing state-sanctioned violence, including its laws and policies, within this prism allows the development of a vision or charge that can unite people, as well as a deeper commitment to working with oppressed groups in seeking social justice. Social work is not exempt from having a role in state-sanctioned violence. This book only delves into the profession’s history and evolution to appreciate how it has reinforced a state-sanctioned violence agenda, wittingly or unwittingly. Practice is never apolitical; it either supports a state-sanctioned violence narrative or resists it with counternarratives. Social work must be vigilant of how it supports state violence.

Résumé :
Aphorisms—or philosophical short sayings—appear everywhere, from Confucius to Twitter, the Buddha to the Bible, Heraclitus to Nietzsche. Yet despite this ubiquity, the aphorism is the least studied literary form. What are its origins? How did it develop? How do religious or philosophical movements arise from the enigmatic sayings of charismatic leaders? And why do some of our most celebrated modern philosophers use aphoristic fragments to convey their deepest ideas? This book crisscrosses histories and cultures to answer these questions and more. The book demonstrates how aphorisms—ranging from China, Greece, and biblical antiquity to the European Renaissance and nineteenth century—encompass sweeping and urgent programs of thought. Constructed as literary fragments, aphorisms open new lines of inquiry and horizons of interpretation. In this way, aphorisms have functioned as ancestors, allies, or antagonists to grand systems of philosophy. Encompassing literature, philology, and philosophy, the history of the book and the history of reading, this book invites us to reflect anew on what it means to think deeply about this pithiest of literary forms.

The US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq led to more than a million people being killed, displaced five million from their homes and shattered countless more lives. It was a colossal, premeditated war crime. Leaders of governments in the countries responsible for this enormity seek to minimise and forget about it: to ‘move on’. We must not let them, because they want to retain the option of making the same political decisions, condemning more innocent people to death, somewhere else in the future. Contributors to this book are united in saying: never again. They examine how and why this unmitigated disaster for humanity was allowed to happen, and how we can prevent it being repeated. And they imagine more peaceful ways to engage with conflicts and crises in times to come. It raises a question: what will you do to help end war and build peace?

Résumé :
John Aubrey constructed an intimate and nonthreatening biographical persona, which allowed him to collect sensitive material about people in a politically turbulent period. He preserved documents and facts, but also anecdotes and “sayings,” as records of the human voice and the reputations of biographical subjects. He developed an expectation that comprehensive and factual biographical reference works were necessary, and that biography could be an aspect of social or historical knowledge. He wrote the lives of women and of those who were not privileged, rejecting the exemplary tradition and writing sympathetically about ordinary people. When writing the life of Hobbes, he disagreed with his collaborator, Dryden, about the nature of biography, which Dryden saw as a neoclassical rhetorical art, requiring the suppression of ignominious or inelegant facts and creation of a pantheon of eminence. Aubrey created a new form, fame for disillusioned times, with modern values and a respect for fact.

Résumé :
AbstractThis chapter presents the theory of practice architectures, which allows us to look at and reflect upon parental involvement as a practice with its own traditions. As such a practice, parental involvement is constituted by cultural-discursive, material-economic, and social-political arrangements that Kemmis et al. (Changing practices, changing education, 1st edn. Springer Singapore, Imprint: Springer, 2014) have respectively referred to as sayings, doings, and relatings. This theory allows us to study parental involvement by focusing on each of these aspects, but also on ecologies that are shared with other practices, which is shown in empirical examples from the Czech Republic and Tanzania. The strength of this theory as a conceptual toolkit lies in its ability to capture the complexity of the social practice that PI is, its openness to contextualisation, and its potential for explaining how the same sayings turn into very different doings because of power and solidarity relations.

Abstract This is a book about semantic theories of modality. I am not too comfortable trying to define modality, but a definition provides a useful place to start: modality is the linguistic phenomenon whereby grammar allows one to say things about, or on the basis of, situations which need not be real. Let’s take an example: I say “You should see a doctor.” I am saying something about situations in which you see a doctor; in particular, I am saying that some of them are better than comparable situations in which you don’t see a doctor. Notice that what I say can be useful and true even though you do not see a doctor. Thus, what I say concerns situations which need not be real.

Abstract In this chapter, for a locally compact Hausdorff space X, we attempt to construct a measure space with a “natural” affinity to X. The central result of this chapter is the Riesz–Markov theorem, essentially saying that all positive functionals on Cc(X), the space of compactly supported complex-valued continuous functions on X, arise from positive measures by integration. This allows a simple construction of the Lebesgue measure on Rk. We also prove Lusin’s theorem and discuss differentiability of complex measures. The generalized fundamental theorem of calculus is given in detail as a guided exercise. Finally, the chapter offer exercises to challenge the reader.

Résumé :
This chapter reads Suppliants, focusing on the form of its allegory and allegory as a tragic form. If all tragedy is inherently allegorical, as historicist scholarship assumes, Euripides turns this generic feature into a resource for thought. His experiment in mimetic compression allows him to explore the nature of tragic mimesis as a mode of representation, both aesthetic and political. The mimetic form itself becomes a kind of theoretical content: the doubleness of allegory offers not only a means of saying one thing through the vehicle of another, but also a way of thinking about the relationship between vehicle and tenor, tragedy and politics. By heightening tragedy's inherent allegorical potential, Suppliants challenges our historicist presuppositions, forcing us to rethink tragedy's role in and relation to the city and the possibilities and paradoxes of “political tragedy.”

Abstract As canonical procedures are heavily textual, spoken language plays a reduced role. However, speech is key in the hearings, the only context in which most parties are confronted with ecclesiastical tribunal staff in person. The language of hearings is therefore of vital importance in a twofold sense: it provides the tribunal with evidence and influences public opinion about ecclesiastical judicature. As the tribunals mostly depend on the voluntary participation of the parties and witnesses, a good reputation is one precondition for their work. In addition, forensic communication is also about silence as an instrument of communication, as suggested by the Latin saying “Qui tacet consentire videtur” (“she or he who is silent is taken to agree”). In some contexts, silence is suggested or requested by law, for instance, when the law allows a suspect to remain silent when faced with a charge.

Résumé :
Abstract War, as the bumper sticker would have it, is not good for children and other living things. For medics, though, it is another matter entirely. The wounds of warfare, it goes without saying, require much medical attention—to keep up the morale of the troops, if not actually to cure many of those treated. (Prior to the spread of aseptic surgery, battlefield mortality was frightful, and medicine’s weapons against infectious diseases, which regularly decimated the troops, were equally weak and unsatisfactory.) But beyond that, war allows army medics to observe the impact of all sorts of trauma on the human body, an array of naturalistic experiments from which much can potentially be learned, and which could never be replicated on a similar scale in normal times, even among such vulnerable populations as the mentally ill and the mentally retarded.

Résumé :
Aristotle once said, “The soul never thinks without a mental image.” From the author's experience as an ESL program director, ESL instructor, technology coach, and teacher educator, this saying is absolutely true. This chapter reviews an innovative web-based platform and a technology-based approach to teaching called Popplet that can be found at www.popplet.com. Popplet is a mind mapping application and a graphic organizer that allows teachers and students to create visually pleasing graphic organizers that integrate different features such as colors, texts, images, videos, and links to organize and present information. In addition to its use to enhance students' brainstorming, presentation, and discussion techniques, Popplet can also support the students' 21st century skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, and collaboration. This chapter will highlight some of Popplet's important features for teachers who would consider implementing it in their teaching pedagogy in the future.

Abstract Under Austin’s leadership, the Martians became very efficient, and the section was moved to Norfolk House, St James’s Square, London, and substantially enlarged. The testimony of several people who worked under Austin allows us to examine the qualities of his leadership. A more personal issue is also looked at. Austin had to send Renée a message saying that he has married someone else, and the method he might have used to smuggle this message through to her is investigated. The bulk of the chapter, however, is devoted to the motivation, planning, and execution of the disastrous Dieppe Raid in August 1942, and how much responsibility for this failure the Martians should bear. The chapter ends by looking at the vastly larger and more successful Operation Torch—the Anglo-American landings in North Africa in November 1942—and the Martians’ role in this success.

Résumé :
Abstract This chapter examines disagreements over whether victims of wrongdoing ought to overcome their resentment and forgive the perpetrators. Many people encourage victims of wrongdoing to forgive, saying that forgiveness ends conflict and allows victims to heal. However, there are some cases in which victims are criticized for forgiving unrepentant wrongdoers. Holocaust survivor Eva Kor forgave the Nazis and was subsequently told by fellow survivors that her act of forgiveness was impermissible. The fact that people disagree over the moral permissibility of forgiveness prompts us to ask what forgiveness amounts to. Dictionary definitions and common metaphors provide limited assistance in relation to answering this question. Nor is it easy to identify the nature of forgiveness by looking to the Bible or other religious texts. Psychologists do not operate with a shared definition of forgiveness, and they appear to be investigating a range of different things under this heading. None of these authorities give a clear answer to the question of what forgiveness really is.

Résumé :
We study the design of data publishing mechanisms that allow a collection of autonomous distributed datasources to collaborate to support queries. A common mechanism for data publishing is via views: functions that expose derived data to users, usually specified as declarative queries. Our autonomy assumption is that the views must be on individual sources, but with the intention of supporting integrated queries. In deciding what data to expose to users, two considerations must be balanced. The views must be sufficiently expressive to support queries that users want to ask -- the utility of the publishing mechanism. But there may also be some expressiveness restriction. Here we consider two restrictions, a minimal information requirement, saying that the views should reveal as little as possible while supporting the utility query, and a non-disclosure requirement, formalizing the need to prevent external users from computing information that data owners do not want revealed. We investigate the problem of designing views that satisfy both an expressiveness and an inexpressiveness requirement, for views in a restricted declarative language (conjunctive queries), and for arbitrary views.

Résumé :
Dreams attract by their mysticism, and works of literature are a vivid example of how through them a person can rethink certain aspects of his life, to analyze certain moments. But the main thing is to understand the significance of such a reception on the scale of the whole work. The analysis of works of Russian literature is presented, the analysis and synthesis of dreams in the works of Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky "Crime and Punishment" and Mariam Sergeyevna Petrosyan "The House in Which..." are given in detail. It is worth saying that dreams and daydreams of the characters in literature are a common compositional, artistic device. With their help, readers can better understand the feelings, thoughts, experiences of the character. The field that explores dreams in literature is oneiropoetics. Several types of dreams - as an artistic device - are distinguished. Dreams are the most important artistic device, which helps the author to fully convey his idea to the reader. Dreams of the characters allow to better understand their characters, the reasons for their actions, their attitude towards other people and themselves, and sometimes determine their life in general. Dreams foretell the future of the characters, clarify their past, help to make the right choice or try to warn against mistakes.

Résumé :
Presentation is a skill that everyone has, and it is very commonly seen in companies, schools, conferences, etc [1]. And the purpose of a slide is to give the audience a better understanding of the topic and to add ideas that they forgot to mention [2]. It also adds visual support to the speaker's discussion. Usually the presenter held a slide remote or just used their computer to control the slide pace while presenting. However, the slide remote can often be unstable due to battery switching. Even those who do not have a slide remote are unable to ensure a smooth presentation because they need to constantly switch back and forth on the computer screen with the mouse, which not only makes the speaker more nervous but also likely to skip the slide. Slidecontroller uses existing AI technology, voice recognition, as a medium to allow users to enter the transition word used to switch slides [3]. For example, when the user enters "Now I am going to talk about'' when this word is spoken the Slidecontroller will receive the voice and match the speaker's turn to the next slide. The user can be creative with the keyword selection that best fits their presentation vibe. Or the user could use the Slidecontroller default option which controls the slide by simply saying “Next” to go to the next slide, “Previous” to go to the previous slide, and “Thank you” to stop the App to prevent from catching a similar keyword that accidentally switches the slide [4].

Résumé :
Abstract As teams plan and coordinate work, some do so better than others when ensuring a group process that is free from error. Generally, the saying ‘two brains are better than one’ is very true, but only if a focus on inoculating against social-brain hazards is installed within the work system. Examples include avoiding groupthink and other related error traps that lead to flawed planning, increased risk, or catastrophe. Many work-related critical errors stem from the natural functioning of the brain, including when several team members come together to communicate about the work but succumb to social norms embedded in our habitual interactions with peers. It is important for organizations to apply enhanced communication processes to detect latent conditions to ensure operations are planned safely, anomalies are detected through focused attention and discussion, and so that dissenting opinions are raised despite human biology that prompts us all to remain quiet and not disrupt the status quo, or question well regarded others. Companies around the world are improving the way important communications occur to ensure the most critical tasks execute as planned and operations are kept in control. The discipline of Human Performance Improvement has allowed organizations to now take better control of the human factor with a focus on communication, job task design enhancement, and employee education on error prevention. Science based interventions that harness the power of the social brain and improve decision quality and foster situational awareness, yield powerful results that allow employees to detect weak signals amongst equipment but also the team, and other latent error conditions that are aligning to create a brewing storm leading to upset operations, injuries, or catastrophe. We know a lot about how human beings naturally interact at work, so keeping the helpful portion of this in place and addressing natural limitations built within our neuroscience are the key to sustainably safe operations respectful of the people who run them. Results include: Capacity-Yield/On time performance improvements of 27% to 65%Rework/waste reductions of 27% to 45%Absenteeism reductions of 15% to 37%Talent retention improvement of 21% to 60%Productivity increases of 18% to 47%Recordable injury reductions of 25% to 95% As our systems and work design continues to improve, the greater the impetus to apply human performance science to address the human side of how work really gets done. Most interventions focus on awareness training, and presentation of academic models to people who execute the work. A better approach harnesses the science but integrates it into the natural way work happens. Knowing how people tick, paired with practical tweaks to systems makes all the difference.

Dans Offshore Technology Conference. OTC, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.4043/35326-ms.

Résumé :
Abstract The scope of this paper is to discuss the successful replacement of badly corroded pipe support on the Bonga using an innovative cold work technique. The objective of this project was to safely replace corroded pipe supports on top of the crude oil cargo tank without a facility shutdown. The approach employed in delivering the project involved a systematic process, where a thorough assessment of the corroded pipe support was conducted. The structural engineering team reviewed the replacement pipe supports design for assurance and fit for purpose to carry the load. Pre-fabrication of the replacement pipe support was completed onshore, ensuring precise measurements and adherence to safety standards. An innovative and non-intrusive fastening technique was utilized to securely install the new supports without the need for hot work or welding. This process-controlled technique involves the vacuum-assisted application of an adhesive system to create a durable bond between the deck plating and C-Claw®, a non-intrusive and heavy-duty fastener made of 316L grade stainless steel; the prefabricated support structures are then secured to the fastener stud via washers and nuts. The badly corroded support is cut-off using a cold cutting tool. The installation was completed within the designated timeframe with no disruption to production operations. All the equipment used were intrinsically safe and rated for zone 1 use. This repair campaign of corroded pipe supports using cold work technique on the Bonga FPSO (Floating, Production, Storage, and Offloading) was completed successfully. The pre-fabrication process allowed for meticulous planning and ensured accurate fitting during installation. Thirty-three pipe supports were replaced in a 10-day timeframe, demonstrating the efficiency of the approach. Observation of the installed support over a period showed excellent performance with respect to load bearing, high durability, and corrosion resistance. The overall value proposition can be summarized as follows: Debottleneck shutdown operations: structural repair can now be performed during live production on top of crude oil tank. Zero deferment Reliability & durability: technology class certified for marine environments. Operational flexibility: fast and reliable installation process with no disruption to production operations. This paper presents valuable insights and additional information for practicing engineers involved in FPSO maintenance, asset life extension and structural replacement. It showcases the effectiveness of a credible alternative to welding in addressing the challenges of corroded structural replacement on brownfield FPSOs. It goes without saying that the advantages include zero downtime, improved safety, and integrity assurance. The methodology, procedures, and results presented in this paper can serve as a practical reference for engineers seeking innovative solutions for structural replacement in offshore facilities.
