Résumé :
Porte Sante is one of the monumental cemetery in Florence, located within the fortified bastion of the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte. In the 1840s the town council decided to find a large area near Florence, to use as a cemetery. It was chosen the Fortress of San Miniato for the solemnity of the place. The first project was entrusted to Niccolò Matas in 1844 and in the 1860s the architect Mariano Falcini designed a new project using the area of the sixteenth-century fortress that stretched around the church. The Porte Sante cemetery surprised visitors with its comingling of styles: it was important to appear, to show the dignity of their own social class. This eclectic mix reveals interesting monuments for the style, for materials and construction methods. One of this examples is the Ruspoli chapel, designed in 1891 by Giovanni Paciarelli, architect sensitive to modernism and designer of Paggi Palace in Florence. The chapel, commissioned by Valsè-Pontellini family, stands out in the landscape for the precious texture of exotic carvings and inlays of polychrome marble, mosaics and historiated glass. Today it is in bad state of conservation.Today it is in bad state of conservation. The recovery of the chapel must provide for a careful restoration project whose foundation is the comprehensive knowledge of good, which can be achieved through the survey operations, the historical analysis and diagnostic investigations. The use of a photogrammetry software allowed us to obtain a virtual 3D model, which forms the basis for subsequent analyzes and evaluations on the state of conservation of the building. Such study will be applied to other artifacts in the cemetery, by implementing current and future studies on the whole complex of the Porte Sante.

The Cemetery of the Porte Sante in Florence is located on San Miniato al Monte, one of the highest hills of the city. The cemetery was built in 1854 and it has always been characterized by a monumental nature. Since the end of 1800 the excavated burials were enriched with decorations, and other areas were dedicated to the creation of chapels and mausoleum made by the most famous architects of the time. Today the cemetery is not well preserved: many tombs are abandoned and there is a general need of restoration. During the Diagnostics Laboratory of the Specialization School of the University of Florence, many studies on the major chapels of the cemetery have been carried out. In this paper is presented the survey and the analysis on the state of decay of the Bogliaco Bartolani Chapel, projected in 1913 by Architect Enrico Dante Fantappiè, an Italian master of Eclecticism. This chapel is a very interesting example of the style, in which stands out the juxtaposition and contrast of different materials and crafts. The studies on the chapel follows a line that go from an initial photographic and metric survey, to a bibliographic and archive research work and finally to an examination of the decay phenomena on the exterior façades. The final phase will be a comparison between this tomb and another example of chapel by Fantappiè, located in the same cemetery: similar construction design leads to similar state of decay. Moreover the workflow presented could be an interesting example of how studies can be carried out with reduced expenses in case of a very low budget. In the cemetery public and private properties (often dispersed) are converging: pushing the boundaries of proprieties is crucial to carry out a policy of recovery of one of the monumental hills of Florence.

Résumé :
Archaeomagnetic dating using full geomagnetic vector was performed on three furnaces cropping out at San Genesio archaeological zone, an ancient settlement located in the Arno River plain, near San Miniato (Pisa). The first evidence of human presence in this area dates back to the period between the VI century BCE and 1248 CE, when the village of San Genesio was destroyed by the inhabitants of the nearby castle of San Miniato. Three burned structures were located at different stratigraphic levels. The SGEN01 represents a kiln to produce pottery. The SGEN02 is probably a furnace for domestic use, while the SGEN03 is interpreted as a metallurgic kiln due to the presence of some hematite fragments possibly coming from Elba Island. Both mean paleodirections and absolute intensity were compared with the global geomagnetic model SCHA.DIF4K (Pavón-Carrasco et al., 2021) for Europe. The obtained age intervals at the 65% probability are 846-911 CE for SGEN01, 696-799 CE for SGEN02, and 623-644 CE for SGEN03. These new absolute dates agree well with their archaeological/stratigraphic position and with the history of the archaeological place.

Garassino<em> et al.</em> (2012) reported on a rich community of decapod crustaceans including axiideans, gebiideans, anomurans, and brachyurans from the Zanclean (Early Pliocene) of the “La Serra” quarry near San Miniato (Pisa, Tuscany, central Italy). In this decapod-rich assemblage some carapaces of the common pebble crab<em> Ristoria pliocaenica</em> (Ristori, 1891) (<em>Leucosiidae Samouelle</em>, 1819) are drilled in characteristic ways, due to the predatory activity of individuals belonging to two different taxa of marine clades, possibly naticids (Gastropoda, Naticoidea), and to octopodids (Cephalopoda, Octopoda). This is the first report of direct evidence of predation by cephalopods on crabs in the fossil record.

The anatomy of the thalattosauriform reptile Askeptosaurus italicus from the Middle Triassic of Monte San Giorgio is redescribed. Important anatomical features are the plesiomorphic braincase, the unique fronto-lacrimal contact, the absence of a previously described thyroid fenestra, and significant intraspecific variation in the carpus. An analysis of thalattosaur ingroup relationships reveals that Endennasaurus and the monophyletic Askeptosaurus and Anshunsaurus are the sister group to all other thalattosaurs, whereas the Monte San Giorgio taxa Clarazia and Hescheleria form the sister clade of Thalattosaurus, and the Chinese Xinpusaurus and the Californian Nectosaurus form a monophyletic group. The analysis supports the biogeographic interpretation of trans-Pacific relationships and a re-invasion of Tethyan areas.

The trial aims to improve the protection and management of the soil, the well-being of the plant and the quality of production in the wine supply chain organic and biodynamic, using an innovative product “ZEOWINE” resulting from the composting of waste of the wine and zeolite supply chain. At present, the use of zeolites in agriculture is a fast-spreading practice; their application to soils (both as natural zeolites and in combination with organic and mineral fertilizers) not only increases production but also leads to the exaltation of quality indices. The research was conducted in the 2019 season in San Miniato (Tuscany) on the vineyard of Sangiovese in production, performing the following inter-row treatments at the beginning of January: commercial organic fertilizer, zeolite (clinopthylolite) and zeowine (combination zeolite and compost obtained through grape processing waste) in the respective doses of 20 t/ha, 10 t/ha and 30 t/ha. Following the treatment, we measured gas exchanges and water potential, berry weight, °Brix, pH, acidity, total and extractable anthocyanins and polyphenols. Treatments with Zeowine and zeolites reduced water stress. In Zeowine treatment, soluble solids were lower, while acidity, pH and berry weight do not vary from control. Statistical differences are also noted in the concentrations of anthocyanins and polyphenols. Results suggest a positive impact of Zeowine treatment on physiology and quality characteristics in V. vinifera.

Through its “Kids Can't Wait” program, Apple has donated computer systems to more than 9,000 elementary and secondary schools. Apple also encourages companies that make products for Apple systems to add these products to Apple's systems donations. Del Monte Corporation began making product donations of occasional excess production on a decentralized basis many years ago. Products were given to local communities, food banks, and even company employees. However, these recipients were frequently unable to absorb large quantities of often single-product contributions. Concerned with the waste and inefficiency of this decentralized distribution method, Del Monte searched for a better way to contribute excess products to needy recipients. In 1985, it arranged with a national food-bank clearinghouse to distribute excess products through a network of local food banks.

Résumé :
The main ecosystem in northern Patagonia, Argentina, is the Monte, a semi-desert scrubland home to a high biodiversity. Monte is the most endangered ecosystem of southern South America, with an annual rate of clearance of the native vegetation estimated at 3.7%. Here we report the results of bird surveys carried out in the province of Río Negro, northern Patagonia. We surveyed four localities mostly dominated by the Monte ecosystem, between 1986 and 2010. Three localities are Important Bird Areas (IBAs): El Cóndor, San Antonio Oeste and Meseta de Somuncurá. The fourth locality is the Paso Córdoba nature reserve. We recorded a total of 263 bird species. The highest species richness was observed at San Antonio Oeste, followed by El Cóndor. Information regarding the period of occurrence and habitats are provided for all species and localities. Additionally, we indicated the cases in which breeding behavior was observed. This information is urgently needed for the evaluation of the consequences of habitat destruction and deterioration as well as for the success of intended remediation measures.

Résumé :
The evolution of Structure from Motion (SfM) techniques and their integration with the established procedures of classic stereoscopic photogrammetric survey have provided a very effective tool for the production of three-dimensional textured models. Such models are not only aesthetically pleasing but can also contain metric information, the quality of which depends on both survey type and applied processing methodologies. An open research topic in this area refers to checking attainable accuracy levels. The knowledge of such accuracy is essential, especially in the integration of models obtained through SfM with other models derived from different sensors or methods (laser scanning, classic photogrammetry ...). Accuracy checks may be conducted by either comparing SfM models against a reference one or measuring the deviation of control points identified on models and measured with classic topographic instrumentation and methodologies. This paper presents an analysis of attainable accuracy levels, according to different approaches of survey and data processing. For this purpose, a survey of the Church of San Miniato in Marcianella (Pisa, Italy), has been used. The dataset is an integration of laser scanning with terrestrial and UAV-borne photogrammetric surveys; in addition, a high precision topographic network was established for the specific purpose. In particular, laser scanning has been used for the interior and the exterior of the church, with the exclusion of the roof, while UAVs have been used for the photogrammetric survey of both roof, with horizontal strips, and façade, with vertical strips.

Résumé :
Abstract. The increased availability of end use measurement studies allows for mechanistic and detailed approaches to estimating household water demand and conservation potential. This study simulates water use in a single-family residential neighborhood using end-water-use parameter probability distributions generated from Monte Carlo sampling. This model represents existing water use conditions in 2010 and is calibrated to 2006–2011 metered data. A two-stage mixed integer optimization model is then developed to estimate the least-cost combination of long- and short-term conservation actions for each household. This least-cost conservation model provides an estimate of the upper bound of reasonable conservation potential for varying pricing and rebate conditions. The models were adapted from previous work in Jordan and are applied to a neighborhood in San Ramon, California in the eastern San Francisco Bay Area. The existing conditions model produces seasonal use results very close to the metered data. The least-cost conservation model suggests clothes washer rebates are among most cost-effective rebate programs for indoor uses. Retrofit of faucets and toilets is also cost-effective and holds the highest potential for water savings from indoor uses. This mechanistic modeling approach can improve understanding of water demand and estimate cost-effectiveness of water conservation programs.

Résumé :
Archaeological investigations at three Formative period sites near San Martín Tilcajete in the Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico, have recovered a sequence of temples. The temples span the period when the Zapotec state emerged with its capital at Monte Albán during the Late Monte Albán I phase (300–100 bc), coinciding with Monte Albán's conquest of neighbouring regions. Zapotec rituals of sanctification practised in pre-state times may have been affected by Monte Albán's military expansionism. The historically documented case of military expansion and political unification of the Hawaiian islands by the paramount, Kamehameha, shows similarities in the adoption of ideology and religious institutions. Among them are the establishment of standardized temples and the ascendance of a militaristic ideology and ritual order attuned to the early state rulers' coercive authority.

Amatta E, Calcaterra LA, Giannoni SM. 2018. Ant species (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in the three forests of the Ischigualasto Provincial Park, a protected area of the Monte Desert, Argentina. Biodiversitas 19: 831-839. Deforestation and overgrazing mediated by the humans have caused a serious process of desertification in the Argentine Monte Desert, which threats biodiversity of this ecosystem. Forests provide important resources and refuge for animal species, such as ants. The objective of this work was to survey the ant fauna of dryland forests of Ischigualasto Provincial Park, a protected area located in the hyper-arid Monte Desert ecoregion in the province of San Juan, Argentina. Ant species were surveyed in summer in three types of forests (Prosopis, Ramorinoa and Bulnesia forests), using a combination of sampling methods: pitfall-traps, baiting, and hand collection. A total of 33 ant species were collected, of which 17 are new records for the Monte Desert and Dry Chaco and 24 for the San Juan province. The species richness is within the range reported for other Argentine desert and semi-desert areas. Prosopis forest was the richest with 32 species (24 exclusive), followed by Ramorinoa and Bulnesia forests with 11 and 4 species, respectively. This study contributes to improve the knowledge of ant fauna in desert habitats of the world, especially those inhabiting Prosopis forests, which are the most important ant diversity hotspots within the hyper-arid desert.

Abstract In the Mediterranea area, major effects of climate change are a modification in rainfall patterns, an increase in temperature with an intensify in tropical nights, and an increase in incoming radiations, especially UV-Bs. Despite the various adaptation strategies, grapevines are sensitive to altered climatic conditions. This paper aims to assess the benefits of applying a new sustainable product to the soil that can implement farmers’ resources to adapt to this changing situation. Zeowine was realized by combining the properties of zeolite, which has excellent potential in many sectors such as in agriculture, with the organic substance of a compost obtained on a company scale from the reuse of waste processing grapes, pomace and stalks. The effects of two different soil management (Z – Zeowine, 30 t/ha dose and C – Compost, 20 t/ha dose) on vine physiology and berry compositions in Sanforte grapevines (new plantation) were studied during the 2019–2020–2021 growing seasons in the San Miniato area, Italy. The following physiological parameters of grapevines were measured: leaf gas exchange, leaf temperature, stem water potential and chlorophyll fluorescence. The results showed that Z increased single leaf photosynthesis, reduced leaf temperature and water stress. In addition, phenolic and technological parameters were studied. The Z-treated vines had higher sugar content and total and extractable anthocyanin content as well as berry weight. These results suggested that the application of zeolites added to compost in the vineyard to the soil can be a valid tool to mitigate the effects of climate change.
