The creative nature of games makes trying new ideas desirable, but these changes are sometimes very risky. We need to find ways to minimize risks while we build innovative experiences. Driver San Francisco did this by using Hinted-execution Behavior Trees; this technique allows developers to modify existing AI behaviors dynamically with very low risk, and was used to adapt Driver’s getaway AI to players’ skills.

In the final issue of the original series of Theatre Quarterly, TQ40 (1981), R. G. Davis described his experiences directing the plays of Dario Fo in Canada and the USA, focusing mainly on his work with We Won't Pay! We Won't Pay! Here, he looks not only at his own but at the half-dozen other productions of Fo's Accidental Death of an Anarchist which have so far been presented in North America – and finds himself, in retrospect, critical of his own work, as well as that of others. He concludes that it is impossible to attempt Fo's plays properly without at least an understanding of the political point of view he sums up as ‘anarcho-communist’ – a point of view which must communicate through the leading players. A regular contributor to the present and its predecessor journal, R. G. Davis, who founded the San Francisco Mime Troupe in the sixties, is presently teaching at San Francisco State University, reviewing for the magazine of the California Confederation of the Arts (by whose kind permission the following article is reprinted), and is now engaged in staging his own adaptation of llya Ehrenburg's The Life of an Automobile, as an ‘imagistic theatre’ production.

Football player safety, specifically concussions, has been a growing area of debate in U.S. mainstream media. Whereas many of these discussions are centered on the health effects experienced by former players, active National Football League (NFL) players often discursively minimize concussions. However, in March 2015, 24-year-old, San Francisco 49ers player Chris Borland voluntarily retired, specifically citing concerns about the health risks associated with concussions sustained while playing football. A textual analysis of 112 digital media and 187 print media articles revealed 10 frames that were used to discuss Borland’s decision. Analysis revealed that the most prominent frame used in media outlets was centered on the health risks and consequences of playing football, while other frames discussed parental choice and social mobility associated with football. The results suggest that decisions by NFL players with respect to concussions can be framed in the context of larger social and cultural issues. As this occurs, conversations around safety, masculinity, and football move beyond the microlevel of participation, capturing macrolevel elements, such as parental consent, socioeconomic status, and health prioritization that factor into football participation.

In October 1928, an amateur troupe at San Francisco’s Temple Emanu-El performed the most famous play of Yiddish theater, The Dybbuk by S. An-sky (or Ansky). This production, only the third English-language staging of the play in the United States, was a signal event in the evolution of Jewish American identity in California and across the West. The players were a mix of elite San Francisco Jews of Western European descent and recent immigrants from Eastern Europe steeped in Yiddishkait, an approach to Jewish life that sought to transform and fortify the commonplace language and culture of Eastern European Jewry into a growing range of artistic, literary, intellectual, and social movements. The director, Nachum Zemach, had worldwide renown as an artist in Yiddish theater. The backers of the production had intended to bring about a revitalization of Jewish life in the city and the unification of a Jewish community splintered along lines of class, regional origin, and religious practice. Instead, the performance of the play became a catalyst for legitimizing the ongoing process of creating and recreating American Jewish identity out of a variety of cultural, social, and religious practices.

During a 2016 National Football League (NFL) preseason game, former San Francisco 49er quarterback, Colin Kaepernick sat during the playing of the national anthem in protest of police brutality. His actions prompted national outrage: ultimately calling into question his national identity and patriotism towards the United States. The anthem protest continued throughout the 2016 and through the 2017 season. Consequently, the NFL decided to implement a national anthem policy to discipline players who continued to protest. Thus, this study examined individuals’ perceptions of the NFL’s crisis responsibility in handling the anthem protest and how it affected their reputation. Further, this study examined national identity and patriotism as mediators between crisis responsibility and organizational reputation. Results indicated that national identity did not serve as a mediator and that only one level of patriotism mediated the relationship. A discussion was also forwarded.

Early attitudes toward women playing football tended to see such games if not as a joke than at least something to be approached with bemused curiosity, often combined with voyeuristic sexism. Despite such views, many of the first female players took up the pastime with a determination to show that they could excel at the sport. Such was the case with the players who competed in the earliest documented women’s soccer games in the United States. Two matches between teams called the Colleen Bawns and Bonnie Lassies took place in San Francisco in December 1893. The chapter contextualizes the matches within the city’s sporting culture and shows how they reflected the broader growth of athletic opportunities for women in the second half of the nineteenth century.

Abstract This chapter investigates the so-called Fintech ecosystem. Fintech has evolved from technology-driven financial products and services to more complex and multidimensional ecosystems, with various players interacting with each other to shape the industry development. The key players include Fintech corporations, consumers, regulators, governments, and investors. This chapter studies two elements of the Fintech ecosystem: the venues (global Fintech hubs) and financial regulators. It assesses the competitive advantages, local features, and regulatory environments of Fintech centres in six continents, including San Francisco, New York, Sydney, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Mumbai, Singapore, Paris, Frankfurt, London, Dubai, and Nairobi. It then investigates Fintech regulators’ strategies and toolkits, such as the regulatory sandbox and RegTech, and considers how financial authorities balance multiple policy objectives (e.g., promote financial innovation, ensure an adequate degree of consumer protection, and maintain financial stability) when supervising Fintech.

Soccer had been played for decades prior to World War I, but the experience of war transformed it from a marginalized pastime into an established part of the American sporting tradition. The chapter tells the stories of Joe Cunat and Maurice Hudson to illustrate how the war contributed to the growth of soccer in the United States. A foundation of soccer clubs, leagues, and players already existed in many communities, including areas around Chicago and San Francisco where the two men competed. The government along with the YMCA spent enormous resources to encourage at soldiers to play and watch soccer. Such investments introduced the game to hundreds of thousands of men, thus providing a new cohort of players and spectators that could support the competitions that had emerged over the previous decade. The experience of war led to a golden age of soccer in the 1920s.

Ceremonies and patriotic pageants are typically immune to symbolic challenge, but the rankling of political and corporate elites over the Colin Kaepernick-led protests that saw a number of National Football League (NFL) players kneeling during the traditional pre-game playing of the “Star-Spangled Banner” suggests that a line has been drawn as it pertains to the nation’s anthem. Despite safeguards embedded in the U.S. Constitution regarding freedom of speech and expression, Kaepernick, a former NFL quarterback who steered the San Francisco 49ers to the 2012 Super Bowl, has since the initial August 2016 protests been collectively (albeit unofficially) barred from participation following the end of that season while subsequently emerging as one of the primary voices in the social justice movements of the early twenty-first century. Challenging the presumption that silently ‘taking a knee’ during the anthem is tantamount to subversion, Brian Carroll explores the racial implications of this ongoing controversy that he contends mirrors the contemporary embrace of ‘reality television’ and is enveloped in a debased form of patriotism.

Public engagement in climate adaptation planning is often described as a matter of urgency. Global, atmospheric change indeed amplifies the need to build trust, transparency, and consensus. However, rushing to action can preclude a deeper interrogation of the very political and economic systems that framed climate insecurity in the first place. This paper reflects on a public decision-making tool that navigates this tension between pragmatic action and structural reform. In It Together is a tabletop board game that engages urban stakeholders in a probing deliberative process over sea level rise adaptation and social equity. Originally designed by the author to facilitate public engagement in the 2017-8 San Francisco Bay Resilient by Design Challenge, this game has been revised for publication and widespread release to designers, community-based organizations and city agencies. The revised version of the game invites players to challenge rules of fair play and rewrite common protocols of urban development. This paper will unpack the rule sets, logics, and opportunities for resistance orchestrated by this game to both ready pragmatic opportunities for action and unearth more enduring strategies for sharing power and resources.
