Résumé :
Thesis (M. Tech. ( Business administration )) - Central University of technology, Free State, 2012
Proliferation of the hair salon business in the Bophirima region has led to intense competition for customers and this can have unfortunate consequences for hair salon’s competitiveness hence survival and economic performance. The only choice left for hair salons in the words of owner/managers who were informally interviewed is to obtain accurate information on market trends and customer preferences so as to tailor products and services to meet customer preferences. From a strategic management perspective, it makes perfect sense that in the highly competitive arena that hair salons in the Bophirima find themselves, research on industry environment to obtain accurate information on market trends and customer preferences so as to tailor products and services that meet customer preferences is a must if they are to prosper. In other words, hair salons in the Bophirima region need to conduct marketing research if they must prosper. Conceptually, it is argued in this study that market research will reveal variables such as market demand, market opportunities, market threats, etc. which if scientifically analysed can produce information that can aid management in making informed decision that can lead to superior business performance. Unfortunately, there is the perception among the few hair salon operators informally interviewed in the Bophirima region that for small businesses such as hair salons, engaging in marketing research will be too expensive, cumbersome, and time consuming hence unnecessary. However, this perception may not be true as normative assertions and research evidence elsewhere suggests that for service organisations, regardless of size, marketing research leads to superior performance. The purpose of this study was to determine the status of marketing research within the hair salons in the Bophirima region and the impact that hair salon’s engagement in generally accepted (conventional) elements of marketing research activities have on the economic performance (as measured by profitability). Analysis of data obtained from 118 owner managers suggest that marketing research may not be something they engage in although they are very much aware of the business benefits of engaging in marketing research. The findings also suggest possible positive link between marketing research activity and profitability. Details of the research as well as conclusions and recommendations are presented and discussed in the report that follows.

Ulrich, Kristina. « Molecular epidemiological study on Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis Virus isolates from aquafarms in Scotland over three decades ». Thesis, University of Stirling, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/28340.

Résumé :
Introduction: RNA viruses are economically important pathogens of fish, and among these viruses, infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) is of particular concern for the aquaculture industry, especially for farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). This non-enveloped aquatic virus, which was first isolated in the UK in 1971, belongs to the family of Birnaviridae and has a bi-segmented dsRNA genome of about 6kb. IPNV is classified in 6 genogroups with correspondence to 10 known serotypes and an additional proposed genogroup of marine aquabirnaviruses (MABV). IPNV causes high mortality in fry and a reduced mortality in adult fish, respectively. Fish, which survive, can become carriers and this can lead to a clinical outbreak by releasing infective material into water or by vertical transmission via oocytes, milt and seminal fluids. Methods: This project aimed at determining the phylogeny and genomic changes of IPNV in Scotland by whole genome sequence analysis of IPNV isolates (diagnostic TCID50 supernatants) spanning 3 decades since 1982, using next generation sequencing technology. Viral RNA of IPNV culture supernatant (CHSE-214 and TO cell culture) was processed for next generation sequencing on an Illumina MiSeq platform. Library preparation was performed using the Nextera XT DNA Library Kit, prior to sequencing according to the manufacturer's MiSeq Reagent Kit v3 (150cycles) protocol. To optimize whole genome next generation sequencing for IPNV, we compared two RNA processing protocols, the Glasgow (GLAP) and the Goettingen protocol (GOEP) with focus on missing terminal nucleotides after a de novo genome assembly. Sequences were used to determine the phylogeny and selection pressure on the genome as well as a possible virus-host adaptation. Results: The results showed that both protocols were able to give full length genomes as well as genomes with missing terminal nucleotides. The phylogenetic analysis of 57 sequenced IPVN isolates shows that 78.95 % of the isolates group within genogroup V, which includes serogroup Sp and 5.26 % within genogroup I which includes serogroup Ja. Segment A of 15.79 % of the isolate grouped within genogroup III, which includes serotype Ca1 and Te but only 7.02 % of the segment B isolates grouped in the genogroup III. The remaining 8.77 % of segment B groups within genogroup II, containing the Ab serotype. Previous research has shown that residue substitutions at positions 217 and 221 in the major capsid protein VP2 have an impact on the virulence of the virus, leading to different virulence types: virulent (T217, A221), low virulence (P217, A221), avirulent (T217, T221) and persistent (P217, T221). Whole genome sequence results show that 58.93 % of the sequenced isolates belong to the persistent, 32.14 % to the low virulent type, only one isolate was of a virulent type and 7.15 % had not virulence assigned amino acid compositions in positions 217 and 221. The selection pressure analysis showed that especially VP2 is experiencing selection pressure in the variable region. In the VP1 protein we see two sites under positive selection pressure within specific motifs. VP5 showed positive selected sites mostly within the truncated region of the protein. Other proteins showed no particular interesting sites of selection. The codon adaptation analysis showed highest adaptation index for VP2. Besides VP5, which had an CAI index below one, therefore showing negative adaptation, other IPNV proteins had an CAI of barely above the value of 1. The dinucleotide abundance, focussing on CpG, showed that CpG is underrepresented in segment A and B. Discussion Phylogenetic analysis of the sequenced IPNV strains shows separate clustering of different genogroups. Genetic reassortment is observed in segment B showing a grouping within genogroup III and II although the segment A of these isolates was grouping exclusively within III. We found that over 50 % of the isolates belong to the persistent and over 30 % to the low virulent type, assuming that due to not sterilising vaccination these types were selected in the vaccinated population. The results from the CAI calculations indicate an adaptation of IPNV to its host. Together with the findings that CpG is underrepresented in IPNV it suggests that this leads to an immune escape. Especially since the selection pressure analysis showed positive selection in VP2 within the virulence determination sites of the protein, indicating that IPNV "tries" to downregulate immune recognition. The prevalence of mostly persistent type of isolates indicates together with the assumption of adaptation and immune escape that IPNV is evolving with the host in order to ensure survival.

Maleček, Petr. « Cross-Border Effects of Fiscal Policies ». Doctoral thesis, Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze, 2015. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-199301.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This study seeks to analyse and quantify cross-border effects of discretionary fiscal policies from two major points of view. The aggregate approach rests on the use of the structural vector autoregression model (SVAR) and its extension, the global vector autoregression model (GVAR). The discretionary fiscal impulse itself is then defined as a change in cyclically adjusted balance of the government sector, calculated at quarterly frequencies. This section is then complemented by a case study of a single measure: the German car scrapping scheme during 2009 and its effects on the Czech economy. It was found that cross-border effects of discretionary fiscal policies may be indeed present, in case certain conditions are met. Importantly, a fiscal impulse has to originate from a sufficiently large economy and there needs to be a tight trade linkage between examined countries. In most cases, cross-border effects have also been found of lesser magnitude than direct impacts of fiscal policies on the domestic country. Finally, as demonstrated on the German-Czech case, even a single fiscal measure can trigger substantial cross-border spillovers. It was estimated that this measure positively contributed to real GDP growth in 2009 in the Czech Republic by 0.44 pp.

Résumé :
The first International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) was held in Zurich in 1897, setting the standards for all future ICMs. Whilst giving an overview of the congress itself, this thesis focuses on the Swiss organisers, who were predominantly university professors and secondary school teachers. As this thesis aims to offer some insight into their lives, it includes their biographies, highlighting their individual contributions to the congress. Furthermore, it explains why Zurich was chosen as the first host city and how the committee proceeded with the congress organisation. Two of the main organisers were the Swiss geometers Carl Friedrich Geiser (1843-1934) and Ferdinand Rudio (1856-1929). In addition to the congress, they also made valuable contributions to mathematical education, and in Rudio's case, the history of mathematics. Therefore, this thesis focuses primarily on these two mathematicians. As for Geiser, the relationship to his great-uncle Jakob Steiner is explained in more detail. Furthermore, his contributions to the administration of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology are summarised. Due to the overarching theme of mathematical education and collaborations in this thesis, Geiser's schoolbook "Einleitung in die synthetische Geometrie" is considered in more detail and Geiser's methods are highlighted. A selection of Rudio's contributions to the history of mathematics is studied as well. His book "Archimedes, Huygens, Lambert, Legendre" is analysed and compared to E W Hobson's treatise "Squaring the Circle". Furthermore, Rudio's papers relating to the commentary of Simplicius on quadratures by Antiphon and Hippocrates are considered, focusing on Rudio's translation of the commentary and on "Die Möndchen des Hippokrates". The thesis concludes with an analysis of Rudio's popular lectures "Leonhard Euler" and "Über den Antheil der mathematischen Wissenschaften an der Kultur der Renaissance", which are prime examples of his approach to the history of mathematics.

Automobile purchasing is a high-involvement process for most consumers. Purchase experience and recommendation from others will impact consumer’s final decision. However, automobile manufacturers usually put sales skill before after-sales service, and regarded it as merely one source of revenue. On the other hand, there is few study focus on the relationship between after-sales service cognition and repurchase intention of car buyer. This study, explored the impact on customer satisfaction and repurchase intention from customer relationship, brand image, service quality, and product quality. In addition, this study investigated the moderating effect of after-sales service on the relations between consumer’s satisfaction and repurchase intention. Survey from 120 owners of Mercedes-Benz, the study found that brand image and product quality will be positive impact on customer satisfaction and thus improve the repurchase intention. After-sales service of equipment and professional will strengthen the impact of customer satisfaction on repurchase intention.

O’Dor, Matthew Arnold. « Identification of salmon can-filling defects using machine vision ». Thesis, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/7749.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
During the salmon can-filling process, a number of can-filling defects can result from the incorrect insertion of the salmon meat into the cans. These can-filling defects must be repaired before sealing the cans. Thus, in the existing industrial process, every can is manually inspected to identify the defective cans. This thesis details a research project on the use of machine vision for the inspection of filled cans of salmon. The types of can-filling defects were identified and defined through consultations with salmon canning quality assurance experts. Images of can-filling defects were acquired at a production facility. These images were examined and feature extraction algorithms were developed to extract the features necessary for the identification of two types of can-filling defects. Radial basis function networks and fuzzy logic methods for classifying the extracted features were developed. These classification methods are evaluated and compared. A research prototype was designed and constructed to evaluate the machine vision algorithms on-line.

Résumé :
The scope of this paper is to analyse the current dynamics adopted by the professional hair-care brand Redken in Italy, and how it can leverage on hairdressers and final consumers to co-create the salon-experience of the future. Qualitative interviews were conducted with hairdressers and managers, while consumers participated also to a quantitative questionnaire. The research demonstrates that the Brand is co-creating well with part of the hairdresser, which, in turn, co-creates the salon experience with customers. Other hairdressers are not able to make the relationship valuable. Finally, it seems to be missing a direct interaction between the brand and consumers.

Chamberlain-Salaun, Jennifer. « Consumers and the social world of health care : outsiders in the expert's world : a grounded theory study ». Thesis, 2015. https://researchonline.jcu.edu.au/45729/1/45729-chamberlain-salaun-2015-thesis.pdf.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Background Until the 1970s, the biomedical model was the predominant model of care used in Western health care system. Under this model, the human body and how it is affected by illness are central to treating patients, to the exclusion of peoples' experience of illness (Engel, 1977; Henderson & Henderson, 2010). Within this model, doctors dominate and patients are passive, obedient and admiring (Digby, 1997). The introduction of the biopsychosocial model of health care in the 1970s shifted focus from the human body and illness to consumers' psychological and social contexts being viewed in conjunction with their illness. Although the concept of patient-centred care was introduced in the mid 1950s (Balint, 1969; de Haes, 2006) it was not until the 1990s that it became prominent in Western health care policy and practice. The concept of patient-centred care emphasises care that is "respectful of and responsive to individual patient preferences, needs and values and ensur[es] that patient values guide all clinical decisions" (Committee on Quality of Health Care in America, 2001, p. 6). Under this model, there is an assumption that consumers share power and responsibility for their health and health care with health experts (Mead & Bower, 2000). The interactional relationship between consumers and health experts is central to the delivery of health care. While 'doctor-patient' relationships still play a key role in health care, these relationships are not as haloed as they once were (Bury, 2004). The "golden age of doctoring" is over (McKinlay & Marceau, 2002, p. 379). Consumers' central health professional may now be a nurse practitioner or a complementary practitioner (McKinlay & Marceau, 2002). Gaining insight into processes of interaction between consumers and health experts across health settings and health conditions enables improvements in both efficiencies and quality of health care, and has the potential to improve consumer health outcomes. Aim The aim of this study is to construct a grounded theory that explains the processes of interaction between health consumers and health experts. Justification There is a gap in the literature that presents processes of interaction between consumers and health experts across a variety of health settings and health conditions. Ethics Ethical considerations were followed in accordance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research 2007 (The National Health and Medical Research Council, the Australian Research Council, & and the Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee, 2014). The Far North Queensland Human Research Ethics Committee (FNQ HREC) approved the study (HREC/13/QCH/28–830) and James Cook University Human Ethics Research Committee endorsed the approval (H5173). Further to ethics approval, Site Specific Assessment (SSA) was required to conduct non-participant observation and to recruit study participants at the Cairns Hospital. Approval was granted (SSA/14/QCH/8 - #830). Methodology The researcher used Strauss and Corbin (Strauss & Corbin, 1990, 1998) and Corbin and Strauss' (Corbin & Strauss, 2008) evolved version of grounded theory to examine the process of interactions between consumers and experts. This version of grounded theory is explicitly underpinned by symbolic interactionism. Grounded theory provides a systematic approach to conducting research, which aims to generate theory grounded in data. It is also an appropriate way to examine an area of study in which there is little prior knowledge. Symbolic interactionism provides a perspective through which to explore processes of action and interaction. Methods Essential grounded theory methods (Birks & Mills, 2011) used in this study include: concurrent data collection/generation and analysis, theoretical sampling, initial and intermediate coding of data, constant comparative analysis of data, theoretical integration of data, selecting a core category and memo writing. Data were collected and generated using the following techniques: demographic information questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, participants' diary entries, fieldnotes, non-participant observation and digital storytelling. Sampling The study was conducted in the Australian regional city of Cairns in Far North Queensland. The researcher used purposive and theoretical sampling techniques, which resulted in a total of 32 study participants, comprising 23 health consumers and 9 health experts. Findings The resultant product of this study is the grounded theory titled: Outsiders in the experts' world. The theory consists of five categories and their sub-categories, which explain the process experienced by people who unexpectedly enter the social world of health care and become health consumers. Consumers generally move sequentially through the stages of the process, although the stages may overlap or be revisited. The categories and sub-categories of the grounded theory are: 1) Unexpected entrance (Emotional fluctuations; Changing perceptions of self); 2) Learning a new role (Acquiring knowledge; Learning the language of health care; Confronting mortality; and Cultivating support); 3) Establishing a presence (Gaining confidence; Choosing a voice; and Establishing relationships; 4) Confronting the dichotomy of 'us and them'; 5) Tailored care (Listening and acting; and Accessing experts). Discussion Findings from this grounded theory study present the processes of what happens when a person enters the social world of health care and how processes of interaction between them and health experts play out. The contingent relationship between what and how provides the basis for the discussion chapter, which addresses questions of why consumers are outsiders in the experts' world. The discussion chapter introduces extant theories to provide explanatory power to the grounded theory and to contextualise it within the broader literature. Conclusion Interactions between consumers and health experts are central to the delivery of health care. Findings from this study indicate that regardless of consumers' experience in their role, they remain outsiders in the social world of health care. The findings are significant in the current health care climate, which promotes consumer centred health care. A shared understanding between all stakeholders around the role of consumers will support the development of strategies to continually improve processes of interaction between consumers and health experts and to strengthen the consumer role.

Rollinson, Njal. « THE ADAPTIVE SIGNIFICANCE OF EGG-SIZE VARIATION WITHIN AND AMONG POPULATIONS OF ATLANTIC SALMON ». 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10222/31512.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis focuses on the classic problem of investment per offspring. It is an attempt to (i) reconcile theoretical research with empirical methods that can be used to test theory, (ii) test a fundamental prediction that arises from classic theory, and (iii) test one of the more recent theoretical developments. We use Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) as a model organism. Drawing from the classic Smith–Fretwell model, we provide defensible definitions of offspring fitness that can be used in empirical studies, and we show using simulation that the Weibull-1 statistical model provides the best estimates of optimal investment patterns. Next, we apply these methods to mark-recapture data collected for juvenile Atlantic salmon. This experiment supports the prediction that parental reproductive success is maximized by increasing investment per offspring when environmental conditions become unfavourable. Having verified this prediction, we test a general extension of classic theory which broadly suggests that large-bodied females decrease the quality of the offspring environment, such that larger females in a population ought to invest relatively heavily in investment per offspring. This might occur, for example, when larger females have a greater fecundity and if optimal investment per offspring increases with sibling competition among non-dispersive offspring. The results of this experiment generally do not support the idea that large females decrease the quality of the offspring environment in Atlantic salmon. Finally, we also provide evidence against a verbal hypothesis that attempts to explain inter-population variation in egg size of salmonids as an adaptation to population-specific spawning substrates. We conclude that the classic model of egg-size optimization can be a useful tool for understanding patterns of reproductive allocation in nature, but that investment per offspring is an extremely complex trait that cannot be fully understood by invoking a simple optimality model. Variation in investment per offspring, especially that which occurs within populations, is most parsimoniously attributed to the physiological factors (e.g., variation in testosterone levels), morphological constraints (e.g., the size of the pelvic aperture) and genetic factors (e.g., genetic correlations arising from pleiotropic genes) that affect this phenotype and that constrain adaptive evolution of this trait.

The present case study is based on the hairdressers market in Portugal. Our main objective is to study the brand L´Oréal Professionnel, together with the company´s program Salon Emotion, in order to understand how the brand will sustain its leadership and continue its growth, while contributes to the market´s transformation. In an industry that is growing slowly, side by side with a decreasing retail business, how is the professional sector thinking about reinventing itself? New business channels, like gross sellers and e-commerce, are getting stronger. Consumers have new habits, without time to waste; they are digital and look for solutions that can bring something different to their daily life. Here is where differentiation is the key, brands need to reinvent themselves to offer experiences based on personalization of services and products, as a way to attract consumers. Going to the hairdresser must became more than a basic hygiene need; it must be seen as a truly pleasurable moment, for consumers to relax and to take care of themselves. The quantitative and qualitative analysis here developed show that the brand has a huge potential to lead this transformation, once it is the market leader, with a strong history and reputation. Always seeking innovation and technology, to enlarge and enrich its portfolio, collaborating with the best hairdressers in the world to develop skills that empower the profession and being present as the leader of hair fashion trends all over the globe. Using these strengths the brands have the potential to impact both B2B and B2C market, helping their journeys and expectations to match in a transforming way.

Johnstone, Devon. « LONG-TERM EVIDENCE THAT PRECOCIOUS PARR CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE EFFECTIVE SIZE OF A POPULATION OF ATLANTIC SALMON (SALMO SALAR) ». 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10222/15321.

Résumé :
I describe temporal changes in the genetic composition of a small anadromous Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) population from South Newfoundland, an area where salmon populations are considered as Threatened (COSEWIC 2010). I examined the genetic variability (13 microsatellite loci) in 869 out-migrating smolt and post-spawning kelt samples, collected from 1985 to 2011 for a total of 22 annual collections and a 30 year span of assigned cohorts. I estimated the annual effective number of breeders (Nb) and the generational effective population size (Ne) through genetic methods and demographically using the anadromous sex ratio. Comparisons between genetic and demographic estimates show that the anadromous spawners inadequately explain the observed Ne estimates, suggesting that mature male parr are significantly increasing Nb and Ne over the study period. Spawning as parr appears to be a viable and important strategy in the near absence of anadromous males.

In this study, we adopt support vector machine (SVM) to predict the hair salon wash care product sales volume according to the weather information. With climate-related open data of the Central Weather Bureau including the minimum temperature, maximum temperature, average temperature, average rainfall, wind speed, maximum ten minutes, the maximum instantaneous wind, pressure, humidity, average rainfall for several days and sunshine hours, those weather information are used as the attributes of LibSVM to run the analysis of sales volume prediction. The number of monthly sales volume of the hair salon wash care products from Jan. of 2011 to April of 2016 are collected from Taichung hairdressing salon industry by combining the weather information from Central Weather Burea as the experimental data for the prediction model. The results show that support vector machines can accurately predict the weather information for the sales volume of the hair salon wash care products. The results can help the company of the hair salon wash care products to plan good marketing campaigns and reduce inventory costs.

This thesis focuses on applying the time-changed Lévy processes technique firstly presented by Carr and Wu (2004) in order to deduce the Bakshi et al. (1997) model with a general jump size distribution. The second goal is reach a full correlation scheme, after reaching the fundamental theorem, where we show how to compute the joint characteristic function of a finite number of time-changed Lévy processes under the leverage-neutral measure, we obtain an exact characteristic function for an asset price with stochastic volatility, stochastic interest rates, jumps and a full correlation scheme. As far as we know this is the first time that the exact characteristic function of an model that take into account stochastic volatility, stochastic interest rates, jumps and a full correlation scheme is achieved.

Résumé :
This thesis concerns a peer Francis Thun (1809-1871) who was one of the most important personalities in the public and cultural life in Bohemia from the 30s till the end of the 60s of the 19th century. Thun {--} a gifted visual artist himself - was particularly interested in the institutions connected with the visual art. The author shows where his long-life interest in the visual arts was formed. She follows his childhood, upbringing, his own artistic beginning and his studies. She particularly considers his ways around Europe and his stay in Dresden, that used to be one of the most important centres of the European Romanticism, and more than a year-long traveling around England, western Europe and Italy. The last part of this thesis deliberates František Thun{\crq}s public activities {--} mainly his work in the artistic politics and in the care of monuments. This work also follows Thun{\crq}s personal life, particularly his marriage with a burgher girl thanks to it he couldn{\crq}t inherite the fideicommissum. This biography is mainly based on personal materials {--} letters and diaries. In terms of them it attempts to show Thun{\crq}s personality and his important life moments.
