Résumé :
From the perspective of the path and mechanisms of rural integration, this article explores the logic behind the integration of cooperatives into rural governance, using the Hongyuan Farmers' Cooperative in Binchuan County, Dali City, Yunnan Province, as a case study.By leading villagers in development initiatives and embedding itself culturally and socially, the cooperative uses its organisational advantages to promote the healthy economic growth of villages and foster harmonious livelihoods among villagers. Through specific benefit-sharing mechanisms, the cooperative provides governance resources to the village collective, thereby strengthening the community's governance capacity. As the development of the farmers' cooperative progresses, the joint development of rural economic and public governance goals leads to the gradual formation of a new rural governance community.Practical experience shows that integrating the institutional strengths of farmers' cooperatives into rural governance, coupled with internal and external policy management, reshapes the governance structure of different rural governance units. This becomes a new direction for promoting the modernisation of rural governance systems and governance capacities. In essence, this article highlights how the cooperative, by integrating itself culturally and economically into the village, not only promotes economic growth but also empowers villagers to live harmoniously. Moreover, the incorporation of the cooperative's institutional strengths into rural governance redefines the structure of rural management units, suggesting a promising way to modernise rural governance systems.

Résumé :
The paper is preoccupied with the cooperative sector in central Mongolia. Its aim is to provide new insights into the role and importance of cooperatives in regard to poor rural populations. In the paper we analyze the inclusiveness of smaller herders and farmers with in the cooperatives. The research is based on data collection in selected provinces of the Tov region. The data were collected for three distinctive target groups-cooperative board members, cooperative members and non-members/herders. We found that the cooperative sector in Mongolia is strongly affected by the governmental policy of wool subsidies, which allows subsidies only to cooperative members, and is thus potentially leading to very low levels of members self-identification with the cooperative due to big increases in the numbers of new cooperative members. This policy is potentially also affecting the inner organizational structure of cooperatives. Further, we have found suggestions that poorer herdsmen tend not to be members of cooperatives and overall benefits for non-members and the general community arising from local cooperatives are rather low.

Résumé :
Rural credit cooperatives are the main force serving “agriculture, rural areas and farmers” in China. Zhejiang and Shaanxi are the first pilot provinces of the rural credit cooperative reform in China. The research on the reform of rural credit cooperatives in Jiaxing, Zhejiang and Yan 'an, Shaanxi shows that there are significant regional differences in the reform and development of rural credit cooperatives. Yan'an rural credit institutions play a more prominent role in supporting agriculture, but Jiaxing rural credit institutions have comparative advantages in overall operational efficiency, anti-risk ability, profit model and other aspects. On this basis, it is proposed to follow the principle of “six insistence” in promoting the reform of rural credit cooperatives, continuously improve the operating capacity of rural credit cooperatives, and promote the supply side structural reform of rural finance.

Résumé :
The article presents the results of study of the possibilities and prerequisites for the development of rural territories based on the restructuring of the agri-food system at the local level. The inclusion of peasant farm enterprises, private subsidiary farms, agricultural consumer cooperatives and agricultural cooperative markets into short supply food chains has been observed. The study was conducted on the basis of Rosstat data across the subjects of the Russian Federation. The polling survey was carried out in Vologda, Leningrad and Novgorod regions. The methods of correlation and socio-economic analysis were used. Groups of regions with a high share (60-70%; 71-80%; > 80%) of peasant farms and private subsidiary farms in food production as territories with prerequisites for the formation of short supply food chains were identified. The tendencies of decreasing the number of agricultural consumer cooperatives and their localization in a limited number of regions have been established. In ten regions of Russia 52.6% of agricultural consumer cooperatives are concentrated and 49.2% of peasant farms as their members are located. Cooperatives in Russia as a whole cover only 5.2% of all peasant farms. Operating agricultural consumer cooperatives provide their services only to 4% of private subsidiary farms. Based on the correlation of Spearman's ranks, a moderate tightness of the direct relationship between the number of agricultural consumer cooperatives and the number of peasant farms - members of the agricultural consumer cooperatives (correlation coefficient is 0.56) and a weak relationship between the number of agricultural consumer cooperatives and the number of private subsidiary farms served by them (0.08) has been established. It is concluded that agricultural consumer cooperatives can have a significant impact on the formation of short supply food chains only in certain regions with a developed cooperative network. The results of the questionnaire of agricultural consumer cooperatives have revealed a number of interrelated problems concerning the sale of products, the need for the development of agricultural cooperative markets and other retail markets. It was proposed to manage markets and food chains in general on the basis of a corporate social responsibility model using rural web networks (Rural web).Conflict of interest: the authors stated that there was no conflict of interest.

Résumé :
Qualitative methods are highly appreciated in both foreign and Russian sociological research focused on practical results and recommendations. Among numerous qualitative methods, case study seems to be the most relevant for the study of rural cooperation. Cooperatives are traditionally the most important means for supporting small producers in agriculture. Historical studies show that rural cooperation has always revived under social transformations. Today in Russia, transformations in rural areas are not complete and still determine serious social-economic consequences. The state support for cooperatives and small business is one of the priorities in rural development, but it has contradictory effects. Every year, many new cooperatives are registered, but their number is always smaller than the number of closed cooperatives. The study aims at understanding motives for creating cooperatives, and at identifying mechanisms of economic interaction of cooperative members and risks and conflicts that affect the life of the cooperative. The author shows the relevance of the case study method for studying the formation and functioning of cooperatives and for testing the hypothesis about combination of formal and informal mechanisms of economic interaction in cooperatives. The case study proved the dependence of formalization of economic relations in the cooperative on the scale of its activities, and revealed motives for cooperation of small agricultural producers. This work is a part of the research within the state assignment of the RANEPA Informal economy of rural households: Possibilities and limitations of economic practices in increasing the potential and general attractiveness of rural areas.

Serbia is among few countries that have two ministries, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management and the Ministry of Rural Welfare, active in solving actual problems linked to living and working conditions in rural space. Establishment of cooperatives, or joined action of rural population could enable developmental processes in rural areas. Both ministries offer certain programs of public support focused on cooperatives advancement or establishment, and indirectly securing the competitiveness and sustainability of cooperative members (i.e. mainly family farms). The main research goal is observing the economic impact of the one of program support lines of the Ministry of Rural Welfare directed to development of cooperatives, and further prevention of disappearing of rural communities in Serbia. Analysis shows that mentioned support has turned over the previous trend of shutting down the cooperatives into situation when over 1,100 new agricultural cooperatives have been established in last several years. Additionally, derived results initiate certain recommendations, useful both for policy makers and cooperatives.

Rural saving and credit cooperatives have their own challenges that retard their financial solution to their members and the economical contribution to a country. In Ethiopia, the development of SACCOs is low due to the existence of different challenges. Some of the most important challenges include lack of capacity for providing competent managerial services, limited participation of members in decision making and controlling activities (because of limited capacity and skill), and lack of finance, basic infrastructure, and market information against the need for a better linkage of cooperative members. And recommending Government cooperative agency offices, Unions, and NGOs should provide sustainable technical training for cooperatives technical staffs on financial planning, financial management, and inventory handling issues are the possible recommendations. Saving and credit cooperatives play a crucial role in economic and social development for rural farmers in Ethiopia.

Résumé :
Cooperatives play a crucial role in the economic development of communities, especially in rural areas like Desa Namo Bintang, Kecamatan Pancur Baru. Cooperatives can be an effective means to stimulate economic growth and improve the welfare of the community. However, in fulfilling their role, cooperatives face various challenges that need to be overcome in order to provide maximum benefits to the community. This research aims to analyze the role of cooperatives in the economic development of the community in Desa Namo Bintang and identify the challenges faced by cooperatives in achieving their goals. The research methodology employed in this study is field research, including interviews and direct observations of the cooperatives in Desa Namo Bintang. The research identifies several challenges faced by cooperatives in Desa Namo Bintang. Firstly, there is a limitation of capital that affects the cooperative's ability to provide loans to its members. Secondly, the lack of access to a broader market limits the sale of cooperative products. Thirdly, the insufficient involvement of the younger generation in cooperative activities threatens the sustainability of the cooperatives in the future. In addressing these challenges, several recommendations are provided. Firstly, the government needs to provide financial and technical support to cooperatives through mentoring and training programs. Secondly, cooperatives need to innovate in product marketing and expand their networks. Thirdly, cooperatives must actively engage the younger generation by involving them in decision-making processes and providing opportunities for skill development. Résumé :
Financial cooperatives, commonly known as credit unions or savings and credit cooperative societies (SACCOs), have emerged as integral components of Nigeria's financial landscape, especially in rural areas. This paper explores the effectiveness of financial cooperatives as cost- effective models for financing rural economies. The study delves into their structure, benefits, challenges, and impact on rural communities, with a focus on Nigeria's unique context. Financial cooperatives, characterized by member ownership and control, aim to provide affordable financial services to low-income populations. In Nigeria, where rural areas face challenges in accessing traditional banking services, financial cooperatives have been promoted as a sustainable approach to extend financial inclusivity. SACCOs leverage member savings to offer loans at reasonable interest rates, fostering cost-effectiveness compared to other microfinance models. The paper also discusses the structure of the rural economy in Nigeria, its challenges, and potential policy pathways for fostering rural economic growth. The components of financial cooperatives, such as membership, governance, savings mobilization, lending methodology, and regulation, are examined. The study emphasizes the significance of good governance in ensuring cooperatives act in the best interests of their members. It also discusses the positive impact of financial cooperatives on rural communities, offering accessibility, affordability, and contributing to community development. In conclusion, financial cooperatives present a promising model for rural economic development in Nigeria. The paper provides recommendations for enhancing their effectiveness, emphasizing collaboration with regulatory bodies, targeted initiatives for financial inclusion, capacity building, technological adoption, diversification of financial products, community

Résumé :
Empowerment of women is a new ideology for carrying democratic values into the family and society. Empowerment of women means equal status to women. Women and children, equal ownership of productive resources, increase participation in economic and commercial sections, awareness of their rights and responsibilities. Rural women suffer the curse of being both socially and economically ‘invisible’. The civil society organizations work towards making them visible in these areas. Among these organizations, one with an open membership and democratic control, i.e., a cooperative organization will be more effective than other organizations working for the promotion of social and economic development. A dairy cooperative is one such civil society organization which aims at improving the rural people. Dairying has been an agriculture allied sector and indoor economic activity for women living in rural areas. It gives mass employment and thereby helps to promote economic development of the rural masses. Rural landless, small and marginal agricultural farmers and women are involved in the process of milk production. Dairy cooperatives, as workers level socio-economic organizations, have been working for the strengthening of the rural masses. In this context, the present study aims at examining the Social Change and Economic Development of Rural Women through Dairy Cooperatives. The purpose of the study specifies that the socio- and economic background, awareness of dairy cooperatives and participation of rural women members in dairy cooperatives have helped them achieve social change and economic development. Résumé :
In view of isolated small scale farmers still dominating the Nigerian agricultural sector, the import of this study is on the need to employ agro-based cooperatives in mobilising rural farmers for effective marketing of their products since they lack the capacity to effectively market these products individually. This will invariably spur them towards increased production hence promoting agricultural development. Hence the study analysed the involvement of agro-based cooperatives in agricultural marketing and development in Nigeria. It specifically examined the reason behind the formation of these cooperatives, assessed their involvement in agro processing and marketing. It further identified the various constraints to their active participation in agro-marketing. The paper adopted a qualitative research design. Thus structured interview and focus group discussions were employed in collecting qualitative data from selected agricultural cooperatives in Aninri LGA of Enugu State, Nigeria. The qualitative data collected were analysed using thematic analysis. The study revealed that most agro-based cooperatives in Nigeria were yet to evolve from the level of solely seeking assistance to a purpose driven business oriented enterprise. It also found out that most of these cooperatives are multipurpose in nature with very few performing marketing functions for their members. It identified farmers’ apathy towards cooperative marketing, poor appreciation by rural farmers of the economic benefits of cooperative marketing, absence of a felt need to run a business oriented venture among rural farmers as factors militating against the active involvement of these cooperatives in agro processing and marketing. The paper suggests the need for the transformation of agricultural cooperatives in Nigeria into market competitive ventures characterised by active involvement in agro marketing, extensive education of rural farmers on the economic benefits of cooperative marketing, introduction of economic policies and measures that will create an enabling environment for these cooperatives to effectively engage in marketing activities.

Résumé :
This study aims to explore the impact of new rural cooperatives on the implementation of China's rural revitalisation strategy, focusing on the roles and challenges of new cooperatives in promoting agricultural modernisation, facilitating the optimisation of socio-economic structures, and achieving an ecological civilisation. Through literature review, case study analysis and field research, this study comprehensively assesses the importance and impact of new rural cooperatives in rural revitalisation. The study finds that new rural cooperatives have significantly improved agricultural productivity and product quality and contributed to agricultural modernisation by pooling farmers' efforts and introducing modern agricultural technologies and management models. These cooperatives have also contributed to the optimisation of rural socio-economic structures by providing employment opportunities, skills training and increasing farmers' incomes. In addition, co-operatives have demonstrated a positive role in promoting rural ecological environment protection and sustainable development, such as promoting green agriculture, conserving resources and protecting the ecological environment. At the same time, this study also points out the challenges faced by new rural co-operatives in the process of development, including management and operational efficiency, market adaptability, balance between environmental protection and sustainable development, fund raising and resource allocation. In response to these challenges, the study proposes a series of countermeasures, such as strengthening the internal management of cooperatives, broadening market channels, promoting environmentally friendly agricultural practices, enhancing the effective use of funds and resources, and strengthening policy support and guidance. Overall, new rural cooperatives play an important role in promoting rural revitalisation strategies, and their successful experiences and challenges are of great reference value in guiding the implementation of rural revitalisation strategies. Through an in-depth study of new rural cooperatives, this paper provides practical insights and suggestions for policymakers, cooperative managers and rural development researchers.

Rural tourism in Serbia and its development has positive effects on all aspects of rural development, both economic and social. The aim of this paperwork is to investigate the importance that touristic cooperatives in rural areas of Serbia, although relatively new in this area, have and can have on the overall development of rural areas. For the purpose of the research, an interview was conducted with the directors of the existing tourist cooperatives in Serbia. Based on the obtained data, it was determined that this form of cooperative association is necessary, not only because of the development of tourism in the countryside, but above all because of the survival of the Serbian village. The obtained data on the problems and limiting factors that cooperative members face in business can be a further basis for future research on the topic of rural development through the establishment and strengthening of tourist cooperatives.

This study examines the impact of cooperative membership on rural income generation. It also analyzes the factors influencing participation in cooperatives among rural households in Southwest, Nigeria. The study was designed to account for selection bias into cooperative organizations. Rural household survey data were used and the estimates were based on both the Probit model and non-parametric propensity score matching method. The findings show that income generated through cooperative membership is approximately 10% higher than those generated by noncooperative members. Empirical estimates of determinants of cooperative membership indicate that years of education, age and land size have significant influences on the decision to join cooperatives.

Résumé :
This article shows the driving factors of rural women's participation in the TWITEZIMBERE and REKATUJANE rice cooperatives in the GIHANGA commune. These factors are related to the preservation of traditional culture in Burundi in general and in rural areas in particular, where women are in the majority. To achieve this, the research methodology used is both qualitative (individual interviews and documentary research) and quantitative (questionnaire administered to respondents). The results of this research show that traditional culture has forced rural women to stay at home to care for children and perform various household chores. This situation of isolation leads to a lack of information about the benefits of rice-growing cooperatives and the value they can bring to their members. It is also observed that rural women lack the will to adopt the new rice farming practices in Cooperatives. This situation of lack of will to adopt new behavior has hindered the massive participation of rural women in rice cooperatives. Finally, the article emphasizes that the illiteracy of these rural women and the lack of external technical and financial support are considered other important factors that constituted the barriers to their massive participation in rice cooperatives. To deal with this series of problems, the researcher has discovered strategies that can encourage rural women to participate massively in rice cooperatives, in particular, to become members of rice cooperatives that help their members to make them known and receive external technical and financial support, for example, incentives from the government. For this, the Government must therefore help them by providing multifaceted support including local and foreign technical and financial partners. Similarly, cooperative leaders might seek out various donors for their agricultural cooperative associations.

Résumé :
Based on the analysis of the current state of existing agricultural cooperatives within the country and their features in Lviv region, main problems of development of this organizational and legal form have been identified. It is established that the functioning of agricultural cooperatives in Lviv region is still in its infancy due to imperfect institutional environment and their production and economic results do not have a significant impact on the overall economic condition of the agricultural sector and the welfare of the rural citizens. Dynamics of registered cooperatives in Ukraine is compared with the actual ones. It is shown that the development of cooperative process is made due to changes to general socio-economic situation in the industry, which is facilitated by state authorities, as well as development of the latest forms and methods of organizing economic activity in rural areas, implemented on a project basis. Conclusions are made that creation and functioning of cooperatives is the result of institutional changes, and cooperative organizational forms can be considered as a certain social capital. It is established that the main problems of agricultural cooperation development in Ukraine are: incomplete restructuring of the agricultural sector, weak material and technical base of cooperatives, especially in capital-intensive areas of agricultural production, unavailability of loans and weak financial support of agricultural cooperation by the state. It is shown that the state policy should be aimed at creating conditions for the development of agricultural cooperatives, intensification of cooperatives, state support and legal protection of cooperatives, optimization of tax policy by differentiating tax rates and facilitating access to credit for agricultural cooperatives. rural households. It is recommended in further research to pay attention to the elimination of identified obstacles, primarily of an institutional nature, in accelerating the development of agricultural cooperatives as an organizational and legal form that has significant potential for its development. Keywords: agricultural cooperatives, organizational and economic form, cooperative movement, production cooperatives, service cooperative.

Résumé :
Although past studies have shown that cooperatives can improve the welfare of rural communities. However, many farmers did not aware about the cooperative advantages. This begs a question as to whether cooperatives really contribute to the rural incomes and economies. This study aims to assess farmers’ perception on cooperative membership and how members have adopted innovative technologies. Data were obtained from a survey with 300 dairy farmers in Malang and Batu, East Java. The data were examined using a descriptive analysis. The results showed that farmers who do not join any cooperatives perceive that the institution is not able to determine the quality of their milk produce. Meanwhile, farmers who are members of a cooperative perceive that the institution can maintain stability of milk produce’s sales prices. This implies that education about cooperatives among farmers needs to be improved so that they can objectively view the benefits of cooperative membership and make informed decision in their economic activities.

Résumé :
The purpose of this article is to investigate agricultural territories and their impact on agricultural cooperatives. In this case, the cooperative acts as a mechanism for rural development. The defining feature is that the mechanism of integrated development of rural territory to provide a comprehensive solution to the problems of the economy of the area and settlement, the formation and increase of investment attractiveness of the territory of the rural settlement and the creation of a “working” climate for private business are agricultural cooperatives. Analyzing the state of cooperation in the context of the European integration tendencies, which currently permeate the agrarian sector of the Ukrainian economy, studying the experience of cooperation among farmers of the European countries can be useful both from the point of view of its adaptation to domestic realities, and from the point of view of the most significant mistakes in development and miscalculations in rural areas. In addition, marketing studies have been conducted in rural areas of Ukraine, which have revealed the most significant areas of rural settlement development, including the creation and development of enterprises of meat, construction, tourism and recreational clusters and the development of joint ventures as growth points that activate the development of small and medium-sized businesses around them and the formation of interregional ties and rural cooperatives. Methods. Creating an agricultural consumer supply cooperative is the most effective mechanism for developing identified growth points and creating infrastructure to support them in rural Ukraine. The basis for the construction of an agricultural cooperative in rural areas is the formation of a model of maximum cost reduction for all members of the cooperative. Results. The further development and effective management of the cooperatives will contribute to solving socio-economic problems, improving the well-being of the peasants and, as a consequence, ensuring the integrated development of rural areas. Value/originality. Analyzing the activities of agricultural cooperatives operating in the world, we point out that research on the institutional foundations of the cooperative and its functioning as a mechanism of economic self-regulation give reason to claim that the cooperative does not have sufficient state support for its development. As a consequence, the number of cooperatives is steadily decreasing, we believe that the cooperative system of interaction of economic agents in the agricultural sector should include nationwide programmatic measures on institutional adaptation of cooperation as a mechanism of market self-regulation, a special form of integration, institutional mechanism for regulating entrepreneurship and the basis of cooperation, rules, traditions, organizations and institutions, the task of which is to determine the behavior of economic entities for the sake of satisfaction individual and social goals in the system of production and exchange of goods and services.

Résumé :
As the main demand side of rural financial services, farmers’ cooperatives are an important part of China’s rural finance. However, due to the lack of effective collateral, farmers’ cooperatives have problems such as difficulty in obtaining loans or expensive loans, which not only hinder the high-quality development of farmers’ cooperatives, but also limit the development of regional rural finance. Digital credit as a new financing model can effectively alleviate the problems of difficult and expensive loans and has received wide attention from the government and academia. Based on this, this paper analyzes the digital credit behavior of farmers’ cooperatives in detail by applying the “6C” family model to the grounded theory, and constructs a theoretical analysis model of farmers’ cooperatives’ digital credit behavior. The findings are as follows: The motivation for the digital credit of farmers’ cooperatives is that the credit procedures are simple, the loan period is short, and the loan interest rate is low; the condition is the farmers’ cooperative reputation advantage and government policy support,; the main form is the participation of cooperatives in short- and long-cycle digital credit; and the consequence is reflected in increasing the income of cooperative members, improving the availability of cooperative loans, promoting cooperative credit building, and achieving sustainable agricultural development. Different participation motivations have different effects on the form of credit. When motivated by simple credit procedures and short loan periods, farmers’ cooperatives choose “Huinong e-loan”; when motivated by simple procedures and low loan interest rates, farmers’ cooperatives choose “Funong Loan”. Different forms of credit will produce different performances. Farmers’ cooperatives choosing “Huinong e-loan” will produce economic performance; farmers’ cooperatives choosing “Funong Loan” will produce economic performance and social performance. In order to deal with the problem of digital credit of farmers’ cooperatives, the government needs to improve the relevant policies and regulations, reduce credit risks, and establish a sound credit system to provide credit guarantees for cooperatives and farmers. Financial institutions need to improve their financial services and innovate financial products and services to meet the multi-level credit needs of cooperatives.

Résumé :
The article presents the main research results on the peculiarities of the functioning of agricultural cooperatives and the practices of state regulation of their activities in the countries of the European Union. The high importance of agricultural cooperatives is justified, first of all, by their multifunctionality, and, consequently, by their contribution both to the development of the agricultural economy and to the stability of rural areas. The main trends in the development of agricultural cooperation in Europe are: (1) the enlargement of the cooperative business; (2) the development of vertical integration along the technological chain, (3) all kinds of organizational innovations to expand financial opportunities, (4) strengthening competitiveness through the growth of the scale of activities and all kinds of innovations, (5) socialization of cooperative activities in order to improve the living conditions of rural communities. The specificity of state support for European agricultural cooperatives lies in expanding the range of mechanisms and instruments used by the state, providing financial assistance mainly to small regional cooperatives (performing functions important for rural areas), taking into account the possibilities of cooperative activities under extraordinary conditions (such as the COVID-19 pandemic or emerging natural cataclysms).

Résumé :
AbstractIn this paper the authors consider some issues concerning the problems of rural cooperatives in contemporary Poland. In the first part, the important role of cooperatives in agricultural changes as well as rural development has been stressed, especially as an opposition to neo-liberal tendencies in the food economy. In such a context, the authors would like to compare some opinions concerning cooperative movements presented by farmers who are members and non-members of cooperatives. The characteristics of respondents contain some information about their sex, age, level of education as well as ownership status, including also the size of the possessed farms. Moreover, the presentation of attitudes has been focussed on the issues of cooperation with other farmers as well as general trust in others. The issues of knowledge about cooperative ideas and contemporary cooperative movements have been taken into consideration. In the final part of the empirical analysis some opinions concerning major obstacles to the development of cooperative movements have been considered. To conclude the whole paper the authors stress some differences in opinions and attitudes between members and non-members of cooperatives. However, what seems to be even more important is that even farmers who are members of cooperatives lacked sufficient knowledge on issues that make cooperatives successful.

Résumé :
Abstract: All over the world, cooperatives have made a significant contribution to sustainable economic development and ensuring stability in the labor market. Cooperatives are owned, managed and served by their members, which allows them to effectively solve economic problems, develop social and human capital, and, at the same time, encourages people to cooperate and help each other. The article is devoted to the definition of the role of cooperative enterprises in the problem of poverty reduction in rural areas. Theoretical views of scientists on the possibilities of cooperative enterprises in solving the problem of rural poverty are considered. The relationship between rural entrepreneurship and poverty is shown. The role of farming in reducing poverty in developing countries is evaluated. Data from surveys of rural residents and representatives of small businesses in foreign countries show that overcoming poverty is impossible without the development of rural infrastructure and a comprehensive state policy. Methods of poverty reduction and successful cooperation practices in China are considered. Using the example of energy cooperatives in the United States and European countries, the possibilities of cooperation in rural electrification were shown.

Résumé :
Rural entrepreneurship in the developing world has long been hailed as a powerful tool for promoting the socioeconomic integration of young people and the key to avoiding rural depopulation as well as ensuring these areas remain attractive places for rural youth. However, there have been no efforts to investigate the role of collective entrepreneurship in the creation and management of new businesses in Morocco. Furthermore, we build on the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to investigate and explain entrepreneurial intention among the rural youth members of agricultural cooperatives, and identify the vulnerabilities and factors that influence the choice or decision-making between permanent membership at the cooperative and an entrepreneurial career. In this case, we apply the cognitive approach to survey rural youth in the Drâa-Tafilalet region of Morocco in 2020. The binary logistic regression analysis technique has been used and applied to build the best model to explain why some rural youth members of the cooperative, but not others, choose to become entrepreneurs. We model how agricultural cooperatives may favor or inhibit the translation of entrepreneurial intention into new venture creation. A random sample size of 130 young people has been selected, from which 54 are intending to start a business and 76 have a negative intention of self-employment. The results of the analysis showed that socio-demographic variables, individual perceptions, previous experience, and the activities of the cooperative were statistically significant and reliable in building the binary logistic regression model. Findings also suggest that the risks of agribusiness and financing constraints have a negative influence on entrepreneurial intentions of the youth and women in agricultural cooperatives.

Résumé :
This paper aimed to explore the effectiveness of agricultural cooperatives towards the enhancement of food security in rural areas. The formation of agricultural cooperatives in South Africa is a prerequisite for obtaining government support concerning activities aimed at social and economic development. It is well-documented that agricultural cooperatives are business entities and vehicles for food security. However, this review sustained that agricultural cooperative do not completely alleviate the vulnerability of food-insecure households because of the dearth of institutional support and sufficient productive resources. Focus group discussions with six agricultural cooperatives and four face-to-face in-depth interviews with municipal officials were conducted to envisage the improvement of food security through agricultural cooperatives. Using thematic analysis to analyse data, findings confirmed that institutional support improves the efficiency of agricultural cooperatives at the local level. Furthermore, institutional support enhances productivity which renders the cooperatives as a supplementary intervention to food security. However, there is a gap in enabling access to agricultural inputs, such as funding for access to farming equipment. This paper recommends the implementation of a cooperative management structure to enhance planning, coordination, and monitoring. The municipality should review the agricultural cooperative governance frameworks to achieve enabling environments for farming activities

Résumé :
The need for Romanian agriculture development by efficient usage of resources and a rural environment has led to the establishment of agricultural cooperatives. Romania needs strong cooperatives and, in order to achieve this, the involvement of not only the authorities and agricultural producers, but also of each inhabitant from the rural area, is required. In the context of food market saturation with import products, it is necessary to revive the Romanian market in order to supply natural and quality products. A total of 1425 agricultural cooperatives were registered in Romania at the end of 2018, out of which 57% did not submit the Balance Sheet. The research performed within the study proposes the usage of fsQCA analysis in order to assess some conditions considered by us essential for the sustainability of the agricultural cooperatives. These conditions are represented by the initial contribution of the members, by the existence of a central collection space, by the employment of a manager, by the knowledge of the members on the development possibilities, and by the involvement of the members within the cooperative’s activity. The study highlights the fact that the absence of the conditions presented leads to the absence of a sustainable cooperative. We consider the dissolution of the cooperatives pertinent, which has not developed an activity for more than three years from their establishment and the publication on the MADR website of the National Registry of Cooperatives, which will offer a true image on the prosperity and viability of these types of entities.

Résumé :
Relevance. The widespread use of digital opportunities by modern cooperatives in their multifunctional activities is of genuine interest to both scientists and practitioners, in connection with which there are noteworthy scientific publications and analytical (coming from the cooperators themselves) reviews. It is important that cooperative organizations, both small, important for the regional economy, and large, business-oriented, use digital solutions not only to increase their competitiveness (for purely economic purposes), but also to overcome social and environmental problems that arise in rural areas due to biological, climatic and geopolitical challenges.Methods. To achieve the goal outlined in the work (identifying the potential of digitalization in ensuring high performance of cooperatives and, through their activities, sustainable development of rural areas), review and analytical methods based on a rigorous study of the results of theoretical research and reporting materials of large cooperatives were applied. having official websites and publishing their strategic and reporting documents on them. The analysis, primarily from the standpoint of the suitability of international experience for domestic practice, was subject to the information of the International Cooperative Alliance (International Cooperative Alliance, ICA), reflecting the positive practices of digitalization of cooperative activities in various countries of the world, as well as the difficulties faced by agricultural cooperatives in the new (digital) environment. The basis for empirical research and, consequently, for the application of quantitative methods in them was the generalized materials of sociological surveys organized within the boundaries of the subjects of the Ural Federal District, mainly in the Sverdlovsk Region.Results. The main results of the study include the specification of aspects of cooperative activity obtained in its process, in which digitalization is especially important and promising, as well as those that are preferable for implementation in the previous (traditional for cooperatives) forms. Of no less importance is the designation of the main problems and difficulties that stand in the way of creating a full-fledged digital space directly for agricultural cooperatives as a result of the peculiarities of agricultural production, the specifics of the conditions of rural life, the uniqueness of rural areas (their position and characteristics). As such, they noted, firstly, the limited investment opportunities of cooperatives in the creation and development of digital infrastructure facilities in the countryside, secondly, the digital divide (different preparation of villagers for the use of digital technologies), thirdly, some contradictions between modern (digital) formats of cooperative activities and the classical principles of its organization.

Résumé :

Résumé :
The purpose of the article is to identify the premises and prospects for organising and developing secondary and tertiary producers’ cooperatives in Ukraine, specifically for dairy service cooperatives. Research methods. The research uses dialectical methods of cognition and monographic method – for the analysis of works of Ukrainian and foreign scientists on the problem of agricultural dairy cooperation; empirical and graphical methods – to demonstrate the state of the cooperative movement in European countries and interactions between three levels of cooperatives; remote survey method – to find out the opinions of co-operators about secondary and tertiary cooperatives; abstract logical methods – for theoretical generalizations and formulation of conclusions. Research results. Most cooperators seek a collective solution to the problems of a competitive business environment in Ukraine. The functioning of cooperative unions, which include dairy cooperatives (secondary cooperatives), improved interaction between participants in the dairy business and contributed to better organization of agricultural production in rural communities. According to the respondents’ opinions, the tertiary cooperative is designed to support farmers and cooperatives in solving such significant problems as restrictive legislation, or to support in the process of such critical reforms for agricultural producers as land reform. Those organisations may be able to influence the market conditions, to raise the funding or subsidies for small-scale dairy farmers. Scientific novelty. This article identified the reasons for small-scale dairy farmers to cooperate and their opinions about premises and prospects for organising and developing secondary and tertiary farming cooperatives in Ukraine. It highlighted perspective points of development and improvement for such organizations to support the further functioning of the rural dairy business in Ukraine. In particular, the respondents of surveyed secondary cooperatives are aware of prospective benefits from cooperative unions and expect something similar from starting the tertiary cooperative. They prefer those to be organised based on sectoral mandate and mainly concentrated on legislation and funding matters, but 80% of respondents have doubts about practical realisation of this idea because of such risks as corruption and shadow economy matters. It is important to stress that secondary cooperatives are the business organizations and in the worldwide experience aiming at marketing, processing or trading the production, gaining the bargaining power and market share. Practical significance. Scientists and experts of the agricultural economy can use the results of the study to support the development of secondary and tertiary dairy service cooperatives for improving the working conditions in rural communities with cooperatives and business environment for small-scale dairy producers in Ukraine. Résumé :
Agricultural cooperation in Russia is considered today as the most important condition for the successful functioning of the agricultural sector of the economy, as well as the development of rural areas and communities. However, as the results of theoretical and empirical analysis of domestic cooperative practices development demonstrate, cooperative activities, despite significant efforts by the State to support cooperation, are still low in efficiency. At the same time, one of the reasons for the current situation in the activities of agricultural consumer cooperatives is that their organizational model (traditional cooperatives) is unable to realize its potential in a new (rapidly changing) economic environment (both global and national). In this connection, the article 1) reveals the peculiarities of the conditions in which domestic cooperatives operate, as well as the problems they face in implementing strictly traditional principles in their organizational structure; 2) justifies the need to transform both the model of cooperatives and the formal and informal institutions that determine the development of cooperation in rural space; 3) highlights the main directions of traditional cooperative principles modification to bring cooperative structures to the new level of efficiency and competitiveness. The main result of the research is the conceptual definition of three alternative models of business-type cooperatives with different strategies, as well as different degrees of individualization property rights, control, and management. The common features of the proposed varieties of contemporary entrepreneurial cooperatives include the restriction of membership, the application of up-to-date financial instruments to enhance additional investment opportunities, the involvement of a wide range of participants in cooperative activities (as members, specialists, managers), and the implementation of various motivational tools for rapid expansion of cooperative activities. In conclusion, the author presents the algorithm of organizational and institutional changes, which are necessary for the successful introduction of the entrepreneurial model of agricultural cooperatives into domestic economic practice.

Résumé :
The government of Kazakhstan is currently developing strategies and policies to stimulate milk production at an industrial production level to increase milk processing capacity. We use and expand the reasoned action approach as a framework to study the factors underlying the rural household’s motivation to participate in a governmental programme aimed at increasing rural cooperative production in Kazakhstan to increase milk production using primary data acquired from 181 randomly selected dairy households in the Akmola region of Kazakhstan. We account for the rural household’s psychological factors and socio-demographic characteristics along with the household’s risk attitudes, production structure, level of information about the government support programme and cooperatives, cultural aspects as well as the household’s proximity to the main market. A bivariate probit model is used to jointly estimate the impact of these factors on the rural household’s intention to join and create a cooperative. The results show that rural households which hold positive views towards cooperatives, have a relatively high production capacity, are aware/know of cooperatives, and do not have a dairy business as a source of household income are relatively keen to participate in collective actions. Perceived social norms and household risk attitudes also play a significant role in the rural household’s intention to participate in collective actions. Finally, gender and nationality are found to be positively associated with joining and creating a cooperative, while higher educated rural households are found to be less motivated to participate in the programme. In order to stimulate milk production at an industrial production level through a policy that encourages collective action, we recommend a policy that (a) supports rural households which have the capacity to produce and are in need; (b) is attractive to rural households which consider dairy as a source of income; and (c) is well disseminated and well explained to the targeted rural households.

Résumé :
AbstractThe first modern German cooperatives began operations in the 1840s and faced, among other challenges, unfriendly legal rules. In Prussia, cooperatives experienced official harassment as allies of the then-oppositional Liberals. More importantly, cooperatives lacked the right to act as bodies, forcing them to engage in expensive legal workarounds for simple tasks such as contracting debts. The first German cooperatives law, Prussia’s 1867 Act, made clear the cooperatives had a right to exist and gave them the right to act as entities. Further development in the cooperative movement exposed flaws in the original act. The 1889 (Reich) Cooperatives Act legalized some organizational differences in the newer, rural cooperatives, and introduced compulsory external audits for cooperatives. Most famously, the 1889 Act first allowed cooperatives with limited liability, a step that made German cooperatives more similar to those elsewhere in Europe. The historical literature on cooperatives has neglected two important parts of this story: problems with the way unlimited liability operated under the 1867 Act, and the close connection between cooperative and company law.

Résumé :
The study explores the impact of education of farmers’ cooperatives on members’ green production behavior. The Probit, Oprobit model and the mediation effect model are used to analyze the influence mechanism of the cooperative’s education on the members’ adoption of four types of green prevention and control technologies and the overall adoption rate, and the instrumental variable method is used for endogeneity treatment and robustness test. The results show that: (1) The education of cooperatives have a significant positive impact on the members’ physical pest control technology, biological pesticide application technology, water and fertilizer integration technology, scientific pesticides reduction technology, and the overall adoption rate plays a critical role. As a result, there is a certain degree of heterogeneity in different intergenerational member groups. (2) The education of cooperatives can significantly enhance members’ cognition of green prevention and control. (3) Through on-the-spot demonstration and general meetings of the members to carry out education, members are more likely to adopt green prevention and control technologies. These findings shed light on the mechanisms by which cooperative’s education affect the green production behavior of cooperative members and provide important policy implications for green agricultural development.

Résumé :
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to offer a new gender- and class-sensitive framework for research on rural women entrepreneurship by focusing on the women’s agricultural cooperatives in Turkey. Although these cooperatives have been promoted as ideal bottom-to-top organizations to integrate women into economy as entrepreneurs, there has been significant decline in their numbers. This paper tackles with this contradictory situation and intends to offer an alternative research framework on the viability of the women’s agricultural cooperatives in Turkey. Design/methodology/approach The paper is built on a critical assessment of the existing literature. It argues that a framework that brings together macro-, meso- and micro-factors will provide a springboard to unfold the gendered processes integral to rural female entrepreneurship in Turkey. Drawing on intersectional theory, the multilayered factors which operate to rural women’s (dis)advantages through the cooperatives are unfolded as policymaking, policy implementation and everyday experiences. Findings For policymakers and implementers, it points out the need for a holistic and integrated understanding of rural female entrepreneurship and for re-formulation of policies at the state level. For rural women, it draws attention to the measures required to be taken at the cooperative level to overcome inequalities. Originality/value This paper is original in making explicit social, political and economic embeddedness of female entrepreneurship in rural Turkey.

Résumé :
Abstract The technical innovation efficiency of farmer professional cooperatives has a far-reaching impact on the economic transformation and development in rural China, but it has been rarely studied. Addressing this gap, this article builds an index evaluating system for the technical innovation efficiency of provinces through a three-stage data envelopment analysis model that measures the relative efficiency of the technical innovation of cooperatives in China’s thirty-one provinces. The results show that the Eastern and Central provinces in China are more efficient than the Western provinces in terms of the technical innovation efficiency of farmer professional cooperatives. However, due to the lack of sustainable innovative capability of these cooperatives, investment redundancy is common in technical innovation. Besides, the impact of the external technology environment on the technical innovation of provincial farmer professional cooperatives is significant, and the scale of the rural market greatly incentivizes the cooperative technical innovation. Some policy suggestions are accordingly proposed.
