Résumé :
The aim of this paper is to analyse the relationships between family configurations and creative occupations. For this purpose, a biographical perspective was taken through the reconstruction of the life histories of sixteen creative professionals in Spain. We have followed two lines of approach, namely Florida’s classification of occupations (2002), which distinguishes between a creative class and a super-creative core, and Lahire’s conception of family configuration (1995). The main results reveal the importance of practices that are carried out on a daily basis by the family network (both internally and externally): reading and writing, cultural consumption (theatre, music, exhibitions, etc.), types of leisure (travelling) and forms of authority that lead the way to self-control and domestic family order. We have shown with this study the importance of the transmission of family culture in the construction of people who have creative occupations and the relationship that exists between the family educational capital and the educational level attained by the offspring.

Wang, Yuejia. « “Family Keepers” or “Career Seekers” : Understanding the Life Experiences and Educational Trajectories of the Young Chinese Restaurant Owners in the United States ». International Journal of Sociology of Education 12, no 2 (25 juin 2023) : 141–67. http://dx.doi.org/10.17583/rise.10877.

Résumé :
This qualitative research investigates how Chinese restaurant owners negotiate their education opportunities, family solidarity, and social identity during their migration for success in the United States. The researcher conducted in-depth interviews with nine Chinese restaurant owners in Western New York and identified two types of participants on the basis of their family backgrounds and educational attainments: the "family keepers" and the "career seekers". In short, "family keepers" tend to see ethnic business ownership as a way to sustain their families, while "career seekers" regard the ethnic business as a jumping-off point toward a new career. Incorporating the concept of transnational habitus from Bourdieusian scholars, this study argues that immigrants develop different transnational habitus within which they constantly reframe distinct mechanisms to evaluate their ethnic, family, and human capital for upward social mobility. By offering a comprehensive lens to understand immigrants’ human agency in coping with social and racial inequity, this study suggests one’s capital is dynamic and two-sided when transferring internationally. A certain type of capital denotes both advantages and disadvantages in immigrants’ transnational journey. It also raises the significance of with-group variance in understanding new immigrants’ upward social mobility.

Résumé :
This paper, which uses the concepts of ‘cultural capital’ and ‘practice’ from Pierre Bourdieu’s theory, presents the family cultural activities that Day High School students in Greece adopt in their everyday life and which contribute to shaping their cultural capital. Moreover, an attempt is also made to investigate the role played by the family cultural activities that students adopt, in shaping their expectations concerning their educational future. The research sample consists of 1430 2nd grade Day High School students, who attended High School during the school year 2017-2018, and the research data were collected using a questionnaire. The research results showed that the students in the sample tend to accumulate and integrate into the system of their predispositions a smaller or larger volume of cultural capital, which is a function of the range of family cultural activities they adopt in their everyday lives. In addition, the students’ everyday family cultural activities tend to ‘organize’ the system of their expectations, defining their future educational careers, and orienting them to different educational outlets

Corti, Giulia. « Educational assortative mating and the rise of hypogamy : causes and consequences ». Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Trento, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11572/323980.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The dissertation explores recent trends in educational assortative mating in Western countries. In particular, the rise of hypogamy is analyzed, focusing on its causes and consequences. The dissertation aims at providing new evidence on issues concerning the rise of hypogamy at the individual level. As for its causes, changes in the partner market composition are analyzed in a life course perspective as a possible driver of hypogamy, underlining the dynamic nature of its role during the partner search. Moreover, elements from the social psychology field such as the activation of behaviors to find a partner are analyzed. Finally, the dissertation studies how partner choice shapes processes of social reproduction, and in particular educational reproduction. A penalty for hypogamy is found among higher educated women, but it does not persist across generations. The dissertation provides two main contributions to the literature. First, it provides evidence of the relevance of adopting a life-course approach when looking at dynamics of union formation, and in particular hypogamy. Second, it provides evidence of the importance of partner choice for social reproduction processes, especially among women.

Résumé :
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1990.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 39-41).
This thesis examines the potential application of the L-shaped courtyard house in an American context. Privacy for the dwelling and its grounds is a key issue to be addressed. It is shown than a traditional single-family detached house will provide sufficient privacy on lots of one-quarter acre or more. However, an alternate solution must be developed in higher-density applications of one-eighth acre or less. The principal design elements desired in a traditional home are identified and incorporated into an alternate design solution. The courtyard house is proposed as an alternate and it is shown that, contrary to popular belief, such a house form can function in temperate climates without excessive heat loss. The reason for prizing an L-shaped courtyard house over other variations in a high-density application is explained in light of privacy and solar access issues. A detailed discussion of design elements in an L-shaped application include: inter-unit privacy issues, the courtyard size and passive solar heating applications, the dwelling layout and interior zoning, entry location, Circulation, facade treatment, parking, grouping or clustering, and expansion potential. It is demonstrated that the L-shaped design will satisfy American standards within a high-density urban context of eight to twelve units per acre.

Kang, Youngkol. « The rise of Korean chaebols from the perspective of organization theory ». Diss., The University of Arizona, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185257.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This study has sought to probe the origin of Korean chaebols by employing theories that have been developed to account for the rise of American business organizations. By examining the top four chaebols qualitatively through detailed case analyses and 143 business groups quantitatively through statistical analyses, this study tests hypotheses raised by the three theoretical perspectives. The major findings of this study indicate that the political economy has been the dominant factor that contributed to transforming mediocre business groups into large chaebol groups. In particular, an organization's relationship with the state was of utmost significance. This study also indicates that the institutional isomorphism approach can complement politically motivated or efficiency-oriented theories. One of the major findings of this study is that Chandler's theory accounting for the rise of Korean chaebols is weak. However, its weakness does not stem from its main proposition that strategy calls for structural reform, but from its premise that growth strategy and structure presuppose economic and technological development. Williamson's transaction cost economics has a limited capability to account for the rise of the Korean chaebol. It is argued that the relative weakness of this theory may be inherent in its "universal" nature, which makes little provision for societal and cultural differences between the United States and Korea.

Résumé :
AbstractFamilies in OECD member countries have changed dramatically in recent decades. Across almost all OECD countries, couples are marrying and starting a family later than ever before. Fertility rates are low. Divorce and re-partnering have become much more common, giving rise to a diversity of new family forms. The (male) single-earner family model, previously dominant, is now largely a thing of the past. This chapter examines how families and family policies have changed in OECD countries in recent decades. It starts with an overview of changes in families, in partnering behaviours, in family living arrangements, and in family work arrangements. The chapter then turns to the evolution of family policy and the policy response to changing families, such as increases in public Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) support and the provision of fathers-only paid parental leave. It concludes by highlighting important key challenges ahead, including how policy must adapt to growing inequalities between families.

Résumé :
ABSTRACT Background: Chronic exposure to organophosphate pesticides can increase the risk of neuropsychiatric disorders, including depression and anxiety. Unsafe behavior from farmers will endanger the health of farmers, especially in the form of neuropsychiatric disorders (depression and anxiety). This study aimed to analyze the effects of pesticide exposure and psychosocial determinants on depression and anxiety. Subjects and Method: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in Sukoharjo, Central Java. The study population was rice farmers. A sample of 200 rice farmers who use organophospate pesticide was selected by fixed exposure sampling. The dependent variable was neuropsychiatry (anxiety and depression). The independent variables were exposure to organophospate pesticide, had family history of depression, loss and grief, post trauma, work stress, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). The data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed by a multiple linear regression. Results: The risk of depression increased with high exposure to organophospate pesticide (b= 0.15; 95% CI= 0.05 to 0.26; p= 0.005), had family history of depression (b= 5.10; 95% CI= 2.60 to 7.60; p<0.001), loss and grief (b= 2.94; 95% CI= 0.76 to 5.11; p= 0.008), post trauma (b= 2.57; 95% CI= 0.24 to 4.89; p= 0.031), and work stress (b= 0.16; 95% CI= 0.05 to 0.27; p= 0.005). The risk of depression decreased with the use of PPE (b= -0.69; 95% CI= -1.32 to -0.076; p= 0.028). The risk of anxiety increased with high exposure to organophospate pesticide (b= 0.13; 95% CI= 0.02 to 0.24; p= 0.025), post trauma (b= 5.96; 95% CI= 3.48 to 8.44; p<0.001), loss and grief (b= 3.39; 95% CI= 1.07 to 5.71; p<0.001), had family history of depression (b= 2.95; 95% CI= 0.29 to 5.62; p= 0.004), and work stress (b= 0.19; 95% CI= 0.07 to 0.30; p=0.002). The risk of anxiety decreased with the use of PPE (b= -0.09; 95% CI= -1.57 to -0.024; p=0.008). Conclusion: The risk of depression increases with high exposure to organophospate pesticide, family history of depression, loss and grief, post trauma, and work stress. The risk of depression decreases with the use of PPE. The risk of anxiety increases with high exposure to organophospate pesticide, post trauma, loss and grief, had family history of depression, and work stress. The risk of anxiety decreases with the use of PPE. Keywords: Neuropsychiatry disorder, depression, anxiety Correspondence: Ayu Laela Fitriyani. Résumé :
The performance of compressors can be enhanced by the judicious removal of the viscous boundary layer fluid from the flow path. Removal of the boundary layer fluid just prior to or in a region of rapid pressure rise, either at shock impingement or more generally at the point of rapid pressure rise on the suction surface of the blade, can give significant increases in the diffusion and therefore increase the work done per stage for a given blade speed. It also provides a thermodynamic benefit by removing the high-entropy fluid from the flow path. Design studies have been done using quasi 3-D viscous and 3-D Euler computational tools on a family of fan stages of varying tip speed that lake advantage of such viscous fluid removal. One stage in this family is a low tip speed fan stage designed to produce a pressure ratio of 1.5 at a tip speed of 700 ft/sec. Fan noise reductions resulting from the decrease in tangential Mach number, without sacrificing total pressure ratio, could make this design attractive for the fan of medium-bypass ratio engines. Another stage in the family would produce a total pressure ratio of 2.0 at a tip speed of 1000 ft/sec and could be very attractive as a fan stage on a lower bypass ratio engine or as a first stage of a low speed core compressor. The final stage in the family would achieve a pressure ratio of more than 3.0 at a tip speed of 1500 ft/sec and could be very attractive as a first stage of a core compressor, or as a fan for a military engine. A design for the suction passages to deal with the fluid removal has been completed for an experimental version of the 1.5 pressure ratio design. A tip shroud allows bleeding of the tip surface boundary layer from the rotor, and carries the fluid removed from the blade surfaces through the tip. One of these stages will be tested in the MIT Blowdown Compressor, serving a dual purpose: as a validation of the computational design process and as a test of the concept of aspirated compressors.

Résumé :
Abstract This study concerns propagation of waves in a coupled array of soft/stiff oscillators. We show that the array supports a family of purely slow waves, including a solitary one, and a family of purely fast waves. The slow and fast waves interact to give rise to chaotically modulated slow/fast and fast/slow waves. Slow and fast waves are realized as two-dimensional invariant manifolds (normal modes) in phase space of a singular perturbation problem.

Résumé :
With the expansion of rice production in Ethiopia’s Fogera Plain, the rural labour market, highly characterised by the casual unskilled labour supply, has flourished. This is mainly associated with the nature of rice production, where certain agronomic practices demand a significant investment of time and thus family labour may not be sufficient. This has created an opportunity for rice farmers to hire labour when they need for extra help, and also for unskilled labourers to gain casual employment. This paper explores the characteristics of rural labour markets, trends in hired labour use and the impact of hired labour on smallholder farmers’ rice productivity and commercialisation using data collected from 723 randomly selected smallholder rice farmers in the Fogera Plain.

Résumé :
Despite the sharp drop in transit ridership throughout the USA that began in March 2020, two different uses of land near transit stations continue to be implemented in the United States to promote ridership. Since 2010, transit agencies have given priority to multi-family residential construction referred to as transit oriented development (TOD), with an emphasis on housing affordability. In second place for urban planners but popular with suburban commuters is free or inexpensive parking near rail or bus transit centers, known as park-and-ride (PnR). Sometimes, TOD and PnR are combined in the same development. Public policy seeks to gain high community value from both of these land uses, and there is public interest in understanding the circumstances and locations where one of these two uses should be emphasized over the other. Multiple justifications for each are offered in the professional literature and reviewed in this report. Fundamental to the strategic decision making necessary to allocate public resources toward one use or the other is a determination of the degree to which each approach generates transit ridership. In the research reported here, econometric analysis of GIS data for transit stops, PnR locations, and residential density was employed to measure their influence on transit boardings for samples of transit stops at the main transit agencies in Seattle, Los Angeles, and San José. Results from all three cities indicate that adding 100 parking spaces close to a transit stop has a larger marginal impact than adding 100 housing units. Previous academic research estimating the higher ridership generation per floor area of PnR compared to multi-family TOD housing makes this show of strength for parking an expected finding. At the same time, this report reviews several common public policy justifications for TOD as a preferred land development emphasis near transit stations, such as revenue generation for the transit agency and providing a location for below-market affordable housing where occupants do not need to have a car. If increasing ridership is important for a transit agency, then parking for customers who want to drive to a station is an important option. There may also be additional benefits for park-and-ride in responding to the ongoing pandemic.

Résumé :
Recent estimates show that almost 15% of the Jamaican population is 60 years old or more. About 7% of this population need help with at least one activity of daily living. The demand for long-term care services is expected to rise as the countrys population grows older. In a context in which family sizes are shrinking and older adults are experiencing poor health and critical socioeconomic vulnerability, the means to meet care needs privatelyeither by relying on unpaid care, provided by their families or close networks, or by purchasing services in the marketare scarce. The regulation and provision of long-term care services in the country is highly fragmented and focuses mostly on those that are economically and socially vulnerable, as part of poverty-relief programs. Residential care is the main long-term care service available in Jamaica. Public institutions target the poor, while the private sector also offers various levels of institutional care, from residential to nursing care. The nongovernmental sector is also heavily involved in the provision of residential care in Jamaica, especially through churches. All things considered, women in the family are still the main providers of care. The main conclusion of the report is that long-term care in Jamaica is still an unmet need that requires the development of comprehensive policies and programs.

Résumé :
We discuss explanations in Description Logics (DLs), a family of logics used for knowledge representation. Initial work on explaining consequences for DLs had focused on justifications, which are minimal subsets of axioms that entail the consequence. More recently, it was proposed that proofs can provide more detailed information about why a consequence follows. Moreover, several measures have been proposed to estimate the comprehensibility of justifications and proofs, for example, their size or the complexity of logical expressions. In this paper, we analyze the connection between these measures, e.g. whether small justifications necessarily give rise to small proofs. We use a dataset of DL proofs that was constructed last year based on the ontologies of the OWL Reasoner Evaluation 2015. We find that, in general, less complex justifications indeed correspond to less complex proofs, and discuss some exceptions to this rule.

Résumé :
This rapid review synthesises the literature from academic, policy, and knowledge institution sources on how demography affects labour markets (e.g. entrants, including youth and women) and labour market outcomes (e.g. capital-per-worker, life-cycle labour supply, human capital investments) in the context of sub-Saharan Africa. One of the key findings is that the fast-growing population in sub-Saharan Africa is likely to affect the ability to get productive jobs and in turn economic growth. This normally happens when workers move from traditional (low productivity agriculture and household businesses) sectors into higher productivity sectors in manufacturing and services. In theory the literature shows that lower dependency ratios (share of the non-working age population) should increase output per capita if labour force participation rates among the working age population remain unchanged. If output per worker stays constant, then a decline in dependency ratio would lead to a rise in income per capita. Macro simulation models for sub-Saharan Africa estimate that capital per worker will remain low due to consistently low savings for at least the next decades, even in the low fertility scenario. Sub-Saharan African countries seem too poor for a quick rise in savings. As such, it is unlikely that a lower dependency ratio will initiate a dramatic increase in labour productivity. The literature notes the gender implications on labour markets. Most women combine unpaid care for children with informal and low productive work in agriculture or family enterprises. Large family sizes reduce their productive labour years significantly, estimated at a reduction of 1.9 years of productive participation per woman for each child, that complicates their move into more productive work (if available). If the transition from high fertility to low fertility is permanent and can be established in a relatively short-term period, there are long-run effects on female labour participation, and the gains in income per capita will be permanent. As such from the literature it is clear that the effect of higher female wages on female labour participation works to a large extent through reductions in fertility.

Résumé :
Over the past two and a half decades, significant progress has been made in relation to girls’ education in Ethiopia. However, challenges remain, particularly in terms of girls’ progression, completion, and learning, with girls in more rural and remote areas facing the greatest difficulties. Drawing on data from the RISE Ethiopia qualitative study, we explore the factors at the individual, family, school, and community levels that impact girls’ education and learning from the perspectives of girls themselves. Specifically, we include the views of 15 female students enrolled in Grades 4 and 5 of primary school and of their parents/caregivers from five different regional states in Ethiopia, and across both rural and urban locations. We situate our analysis within the context of the government’s large-scale quality education reform programme (GEQIP-E) that has a specific focus on girls’ education. Our findings highlight the importance of taking account of the heterogeneity of girls’ experiences, including the varied challenges that diverse groups of girls face, and the different challenges they may encounter at distinct stages of their educational journeys. Our findings also highlight the importance of including the perspectives of girls and their families, within the context in which they are located.

Résumé :
Seedless cultivars dominate the table grape industry. In these cultivars it is mandatory to apply gibberellin (GA) to stimulate berry development to a commercially acceptable size. These cultivars differ in their sensitivity to GA application, and it frequently results in adverse effects such as decreased bud fertility and increased fruit drop. Our long term goals are to (1) understand the molecular basis for the differential sensitivity and identify markers for selection of sensitive cultivars (2) to develop new strategies for targeted manipulation of the grape berry response to GA that will eliminate the need in GA application and the undesirable effects of GA on the vine, while maintaining its desirable effects on the berry. Both strategies are expected to reduce production cost and meet growing consumer demand for reduced use of chemicals. This approach relies on a comprehensive characterization of the central components in the GA signaling cascade in the berry. Several key components in the GA signaling pathway were identified in Arabidopsis and rice, including the GA receptors, GID1s, and a family of DELLA proteins that are the major negative regulators of the GA response. GA activates its response pathway by binding to GID1s, which then target DELLAs for degradation via interaction with SLY, a DELLA specific F-box protein. In grape, only one DELLA gene was characterized prior to this study, which plays a major role in inhibiting GA-promoted stem growth and GA-repressed floral induction but it does not regulate fruit growth. Therefore, we speculated that other DELLA family member(s) may control GA responses in berry, and their identification and manipulation may result in GA-independent berry growth. In the current study we isolated two additional VvDELLA family members, two VvGID1 genes and two VvSLY genes. Arabidopsis anti-AtRGA polyclonal antibodies recognized all three purified VvDELLA proteins, but its interaction with VvDELLA3 was weaker. Overexpression of the VvDELLAs, the VvGID1s, and the VvSLYs in the Arabidopsis mutants ga1-3/rga-24, gid1a-2/1c-2 and sly1-10, respectively, rescued the various mutant phenotypes. In vitro GAdependent physical interaction was shown between the VvDELLAs and the VvGID1s, and GAindependent interaction was shown between the VvDELLAs and VvSLYs. Interestingly, VvDELLA3 did not interact with VvGID1b. Together, the results indicate that the identified grape homologs serve as functional DELLA repressors, receptors and DELLA-interacting F-box proteins. Expression analyses revealed that (1) VvDELLA2 was expressed in all the analyzed tissues and was the most abundant (2) VvDELLA1 was low expressed in berries, confirming former study (3) Except in carpels and very young berries, VvDELLA3 levels were the lowest in most tissues. (4) Expression of both VvGID1s was detected in all the grape tissues, but VvGID1b transcript levels were significantly higher than VvGID1a. (5) In general, both VvDELLAs and VvGID1s transcripts levels increased as tissues aged. Unfertilized and recently fertilized carpels did not follow this trend, suggesting different regulatory mechanism of GA signaling in these stages. Characterization of the response to GA of various organs in three seedless cultivars revealed differential response of the berries and rachis. Interestingly, VvDELLA3 transcript levels in the GA-unresponsive berries of cv. Spring blush were significantly higher compared to their levels in the highly responsive berries of cv. Black finger. Assuming that VvDELLA2 and VvDELLA3 are regulating berry size, constructs carrying potential dominant mutations in each gene were created. Furthermore, constitutive silencing of these genes by mIR is underway, to reveal the effect of each gene on the berry phenotype.
