Bibliography: leaves 57-58.
The purpose of the thesis is the design of a seaside resort in the island of Andros in Greece. A year-round focus of attraction amidst the Aegean Sea the resort would center around sea related activities. The experience of a strong landscape, in peace with the proposed architecture, and the Greekness of the place are the central design objectives of the project. The attempt is to bring aesthetics together with seaside life and nature in such a state so that one can appreciate them together, and understand that architecture can be sacred and essential in forming a successful environment.

Résumé :
The North American ski industry has grown over the past century from a small, family-owned and -operated industry, to a multi-billion dollar industry dominated by corporate management organizations. The rise of corporate resort ownership has led to the trend of the construction base village developments at ski resorts around the country to attract guests, and therefore revenue, to their resorts. Though many base villages have been very successful in attracting skiers, examples of poor landscape architectural design practices abound in the industry. This study examines several design elements considered to be the "fundamental elements of designed space," applies these elements to base village design throughout the country, critically examines their implementation in built examples, and presents suggestions and recommendations for future mountain resort base village design practices.

Résumé :
Master of Landscape Architecture
Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning
Eric A. Bernard
Many mountain resorts lack balance in revenue from season to season. Mountain resorts are most often geared toward, and capitalize on, peak ski season, receiving much less visitation and revenue in the summer season and even more so in the spring and fall. Due to projected climate changes, “increasing temperatures will affect important winter activities such as downhill and cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling, which require snow on the ground. Projections indicate later snow and less snow coverage in ski resort areas” (Karl, Melillo, Peterson, 133). This indicates an even greater need for a shift to year-round attractions for visitors in order to balance the revenue stream of mountain resorts. The infusion of an all-season action sports camp is a catalyst to generate an increase in year-round visitation and profit for the resort. Examples of action sports include skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, BMX biking, and mountain biking. When integrating an action sports camp into the existing resort, striving for balance, harmony, and oneness between the existing and proposed is imperative to success. These principals are present in the sports and allow for the connection from the athletes to the landscape. With any proposed development, specifically in mountain environments, potential environmental impacts are an issue, especially at a site where the natural scenic beauty is in such high demand. “It is the resort’s environment that draws the customer” Schwanke, 119). The relationships between the mountain, resort, camp, and users must be balanced and work in harmony with each other. Copper Mountain Resort provides an ideal location to implement this strategy. Catalyst Action Sports Camp plays on the tension between the mountain and the human, capitalizing on the balance, harmony, and oneness between them. Campers are connected to the surrounding mountain majesty through directed views, inspiring and exciting them to progress their skills and challenge their fears and become one with the mountain. Catalyst is infused into the existing resort, harmonizing with resort operations and stimulating life in the village in all seasons. Ultimately,Catalyst Action Sports Camp helps balance the revenue stream and provide additional stability given changing climate scenarios.

Résumé :
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2001.
Includes bibliographical references (leaf 76).
Is investing in residential properties located in Rocky Mountain ski resorts a prudent financial decision? That is the central question this paper will address. The author examined sales data from almost 3,000 residential transactions in Whitefish, Montana occurring between 1983 and 2000. Whitefish was chosen partially because this town exhibits many characteristics typical of Rocky Mountain ski resort towns as well as many of the non-ski characteristics that affect second home purchases in the Rockies. The author also gathered tax record information to determine the new number of units constructed during that period. Other external data, ranging from annual visitors in Glacier National Park to national economic data, was also collected. This data was examined in conjunction with the appropriate sales data to determine what factors influence the pricing of residential real estate. Through the use of a hedonic model, many home-specific variables that commonly influence pricing were removed, allowing for an "apples-to-apples" comparison within the data set. Utilizing regression analysis, this data evolved into a representative price index that tracked real property pricing as a function of time. For the 18 years of data collected, the real price index trended cyclically but steadily upwards, confirming the existence of a robust property market. Using the real price index, a system of equations was developed as the foundation for the econometric model. The New Home Construction Equation (a measure of Supply) and projections for relevant economic and Demand variables were input into the Real Price Equation (a measure of inflation-adjusted housing Price) to predict future housing prices. This model worked very well, with one significant exception. In the detailed analysis comparing price to housing stock, new supply apparently had a positive affect home prices. This apparent violation of Supply/Demand principles can be explained by the housing stock itself: Existing stock is limited and generally outdated, meaning that new stock has little affect on pricing and that overbuilding risk, at least historically, has not been a factor. There is also the possibility that the only supply for which significant demand existed was new supply. This will almost certainly change as the market matures. Six plausible scenarios of future conditions for the years 2001-2010 were tested using the model. Three simplistic scenarios were run utilizing linear projections for realistic, pessimistic and optimistic scenarios to establish the basic understanding of pricing behavior. Three slightly more complicated scenarios projecting cyclical behavior (more typical of real world conditions) were then run for realistic, pessimistic and optimistic scenarios to predict a more realistic pricing pattern. The linear pessimistic case predicted a steady downward trend, while the cyclical pessimistic case exhibited a flat trend line through its cyclical pricing behavior. All other cases showed steadily to aggressively upward trends. This analysis concludes that until new supply begins to lead to a more significant overbuilding risk, prices in Whitefish will likely continue to escalate in all but a significant, prolonged downturn in the economy. Another conclusion drawn from the analysis gathered is that the existing housing stock is outdated and/or in limited supply, leading to an unusual situation where new supply causes an increase in housing prices. When compared to resorts in the east, these results proved quite different. Over the same time period, real pricing for ski condos in New England fell. The author concludes that a combination of western population growth, greater "four-seasonality" in Rocky Mountain Resorts and a more disciplined supply market created the conditions permitting real estate appreciation in the Western US. These results were explained to individuals throughout the Rockies to assess their relevance. While the pricing behavior varied somewhat across the region, all individuals surveyed indicated a significant positive trend in pricing over time. Furthermore, the explanations regarding the differences between the east and the west were generally agreed upon. Overall, the consensus was the conclusions taken from this study were generally true across the region.

Résumé :
The subject of the diploma thesis is the design of a hotel in the foothills of Králický Sněžník for 62 guests. The hotel has a restaurant, wellness center with swimming pool, fitness center, games room, ski room, sports equipment store, sports equipment rental, 40 covered parking places in the basement, rooms for bikes and baby carriages. This new building is located on the outskirts of the town of Králíky, in places of territorial development with a sports and recreational focus. The design concept is based mainly on the interaction with the future ski slope and works with maximum use of a quality view of the slope and the picturesque landscape. When solving the design, care was taken to ensure that the building complied with the design principles of passive structures.

The thesis project, in question, consists of a wine and tourism complex located in the Cañete Valley, in Lunahuaná. The objective of the project is to respond to a lack of modern equipment that contemplates the latest trends in the architecture of wine cellars and hotels in rural areas such as the valley. This project responds to this lack due to the fact that in Peru there is recognition for our drinking flag of El Pisco, but this is not reflected in the existing infrastructure. That is why this research is carried out through motivations and intentions, current problems, emphasis on architectural concepts and theories, history of its architectural typology, analysis and comparison with referential projects, analysis and selection of the best terrain; and all the analysis and calculation of the users that will intervene, as well as the necessary environments that the project will contemplate. With all this research and information analysis, we proceeded to generate an architectural proposal located on the selected land, which could respond to such problems and motivations discussed above to achieve a complete architecture project.

A two meter rise in sea levels projected by the end of this century threatens the sovereignty of the Maldivian nation state. While flight from the Maldives to establish a new homeland elsewhere has been proposed, the culture and economy of this country is inextricably entrenched in its geophysical environment. Although the Maldives is known for super luxury resorts, the nation's government is poorly positioned to defend a population of 400,000 people spread across 1200 islands. This thesis proposes a strategy by which the international resort operator, an autonomous and independently funded entity, can be mobilized as an agent of coastal defense. Also investigated are issues of artificial reef ecology, defensive coastal infrastructures, and prefabricated composite construction and modularity.

Résumé :
Two fundamental components of causality are the Cause and the Result. In linguistic work the distinction between these aspects is commonly blurred, presumably because the primary research focus has been on describing how language encodes causality. The semantic nature of the component events and the constraints on their relationship are seldom discussed; however, the current work aims to shed light on a broader spectrum of features that underlie the concept. This is an essential foundation for understanding how language communicates Result. The present discussion explores and illuminates the nature of this concept focusing on a relatively open-ended set of linguistic elements that can play a role in shaping a discourse relation in addition to discourse connectives. This is in contrast to the majority of the previous research, which has been quite intensely concerned with investigating a limited collection of well-established causality markers. Also, despite the fact that English has been used in studies on causality both as a control language and a metalanguage, there is surprisingly little work on the semantics of the relations that occur specifically in English, let alone Result relations. By borrowing from several cognitively-oriented approaches and combining empirical data from two written corpora (British National Corpus and the Penn Discourse Treebank) with experimental work, the current study systematically investigates the conceptual and linguistic properties of several closely related Result relation types (including Purpose), along with the joint role of discourse connectives and other discourse elements in conveying the intended sense. The findings indicate that linguistic signals of the conceptual structure of the relation seem to play a more significant role in the interpretation than explicit marking. Two factors emerged as more vital cues than the presence of the ambiguous connective so.  In Purpose relations, a modal auxiliary conveying an intended effect, and in Result relations the presence/absence of an intentionally acting actor are crucial for disambiguation. The multifunctional connective therefore seems to merely satisfy the mandatory marking requirement related to the intrinsically unrealized (‘nonveridical’) nature of Purpose. In Result the presence of an ambiguous marker is to a great extent optional in English. However, discourse markers can also reflect how language users categorize causal event types. This claim has been confirmed in several cross-linguistic analyses, but the lexicon of English connectives has not been systematically investigated from this vantage point. The few existing studies found that the uses of English connectives are quite unconstrained across causal categories. The present work contributes to this line of research and suggests that two unambiguous markers, as a result and for this reason, indeed cover a wide range of causal event types; however, they also exhibit significant tendencies to occur prototypically in certain relation types. The presence and role of an intentionally acting discourse participant behind both real-world and linguistic causally-related events contributes to these tendencies. The contexts that include such a participant are regarded as intrinsically subjective and have been found to manifest surface expressions of subjectivity in previous work on other languages. The current study confirms similar tendencies in the linguistic construal and marking of Result relations in English, which proves that certain language elements partake in establishing the intended interpretation on a par with discourse connectives.  What emerges as a result of this discussion, is therefore an account on how English utilizes the broad category of Result and what linguistic elements are used to convey the array of resultative events.

Résumé :
Using only one line of evidence for a study of historic sites can be problematic if it does not provide a complete picture of the material culture or lifeways of a people, group, or community. In order to understand the ideas and objects, of culture present at historic sites, it is necessary to use archaeological methodologies with vernacular architecture studies and folklore to create a more holistic image of the world and its inhabitants. To facilitate this, I conducted original research on a mineral spring resort, Massey Springs Resort (Massey Springs) in Warren County, Kentucky, a popular resort in the early 1900s. This project examines the site in terms of its archaeological resources, primary and secondary archival data, and vernacular architectural resources. Since there are no standing structures, Massey Springs is worthwhile example of the explicit need of using a multidisciplinary and integrated approach to investigate past lifeways.

The project is about time and hierarchy, it’s a time vortex and a privileged paradise. The project is based on the ruin of abbey Jumièges, Normandy, France. The abbey has kept being destroyed and rebuilt during the past millennium and the architectural style is always changing through the time. Hierarchy was created within this privileged paradise. The hotel has swallowed the entire ruin and all the history, strategies, like mixing & misusing of programs and collisions with history are applied to it. I’m always interested in the introversion of architecture, a desire of being narcissism and vulnerable and the meaning of hierarchy. This project can be read as a terminal of privilege, and model of aggressive arrogant but reasonable attitude towards the history. It makes me contemplating the relations between negativism and hedonism and society.

This thesis studies the feasibility and methodology of applying state-of-the-art computer technology in scientific workflow modelling, within a collaborative environment. The collaborative environment also indicates that the people involved include non-computer scientists or engineers from other disciplines. The objective of this research is to provide a systematic methodology based on a web environment for the purpose of lowering the barriers brought by the heterogeneous features of multi-institutions, multi-platforms and geographically distributed resources which are implied in the collaborative environment of scientific workflow.

The purpose of this thesis was to come up with a new architecture for an existing web based planning and administration tool at Ericsson. The main objective was to create a new architecture with a proof of concept implementation. To find out how the existing tool were being used we interviewed people with different roles within the company. We made observations as they performed their day-to-day activities in the tool. We then designed and implemented a new version of the tool. We came up with a database design that handles a very dynamic use of data types. On top of the database we created REST API to allow data to be easily consumed by a web interface and other internal systems at Ericsson. We also showed that the architecture we ended up with performed well even with a lot of objects in the database. We did also come up with a solution to allow people to work simultaneously with the same parts of the system without overwriting each other’s changes.

Résumé :

Nowadays there are different forms and technologies for implementing web applications without much concern for their architectural model. Without a good and stable architecture those applications may fail during their operations. Thus, this thesis project is focused on exploring different architectural models for creation of web solutions. Moreover, this thesis project is also part of the collaboration between Linnaeus University and Ljungby municipality with the aim to create a system that grow up local economies by showing the local producers’ locations, providing customers with different information about the products etc. The result of the thesis shows that an application can be developed in various architectural models. The choice of one architectural model over another depends on the project needs. I found that by using ASP.NET MVC framework there is more separation of concerns, easy maintenance of the code, and unit testing for an application. Search engine of find local food system can be used to search for different local producer’s location and their services.

Golf landscapes have been cast as selfish land use, only for the recreation of those who are fortunate enough to play (Kiss, 1998). Recently, golf has been used by precedent programs like the Salute Military Golf Association (SMGA) and American Lake Veterans Golf Course (ALVGC) for its perceived therapeutic value, specifically for those who are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The following study presents an academic exploration of the potential therapeutic benefits a therapeutic golf landscape can provide U.S. combat veterans and service members suffering from PTSD. Ownership at a golf course in House Springs, Missouri is inspired to renovate their facilities to incorporate a playing experience of honor and healing for combat veterans. The golf course at Deer Creek USA is used as a model landscape for the purpose of this study. An analysis of the existing literature on the subjects of golf course design, therapeutic landscapes and memorial landscapes provided the foundation for the study. Precedent studies were used to extract specific design principles from each subject which was next interpreted and presented into two design frameworks. The design frameworks informed a series of design consideration for both memorial landscapes and therapeutic landscapes. A detailed analysis of the existing conditions at Deer Creek USA revealed that the golf course needed an intensive renovation in order to meet the report’s goals and objectives. The final Renovation Master Plan is one of many potential applications of the design guidelines to illustrate a vision for Deer Creek USA as a therapeutic landscape for U.S. combat veterans and service members. The following report reveals an innovative approach to the renovation of a golf course specifically designed to foster a complementary form of therapy for PTSD. If built, Deer Creek USA would be a place where U.S. combat veterans and service members suffering from PTSD can go to feel honored while benefiting from the potentially therapeutic sport of golf in a landscape optimized for stress reduction.

Résumé :
The arrival of the Spaniards to the Colca Valley not only had repercussions in the public sphere but also the native populations were deeply influenced. Notwithstanding the records of these populations in the form of visitas (censuses) and other documentation, the nature of those changes brought about by the application of political-religious discourse on their material culture is unknown. This article aims to further the knowledge of this context of change, through defining the characteristics of the late prehispanic villages of the upper Colca valley and the architectural analysis of Malata, an early Christian doctrina, to understand the transformation of the domestic space based on changes in the public space over the time.

Between the time that it was first frequented by foreign visitors taking the waters for their health in 1820 and the building of Saint Nazaire’s bridge and the Blue Road in 1975, the landscape of the Jade Coast has undergone significant changes. On virgin coastline that had been left undeveloped at the end of the 18th century, this part of the Atlantic coast became a favourite destination for foreign bathers in the early years of the 19th century, attracted by the benefits of chalybeate spring waters and the chance to bathe in the sea. The picturesque charm of this varied landscape, with its steep coast mixed with long sandy beaches and pine trees, was an invitation to enjoy an escape and a change of scenery. Having been initially devoted to the demands of an aristocratic and middle class clientele, seaside resorts became, in the middle of the twentieth century, the meeting place for large numbers of tourists and consequently the form of the coastline has been modified substantially. These seaside resorts reflect the profound changes to our society, and as well as being constrained by function, morphology and ideology, they are responses to their geographical location and to their date. Seaside housing reflects the taste of owners and a growing enthusiasm among developers for this new seasonal architecture dedicated to relaxation and leisure, architecture conditioned by the presence of the sea and the sun. Despite the spread of building models through architectural catalogues, the variety of interpretation of these models creates a broad stylistic diversity, which is specific to seaside resort architecture

This investigation situates itself in the frarnework of the studies on the seaside resort heritage of the Côte d'Azur in the second part of the 20th century. It concerns the history of three creations ex nihilo: Port-Grimaud, Marina-Baie-des- Anges, Port-la-Galère,initiated by three seashore builders. The grounds, still available because of their hostile character, had in common to combine natural beauty of the sites with inhospitable conditions of life. The consumer society of the sixties, turned towards watersports activities, was at the origin of a new way of urban development close to that of American marinas. Urban development and architecture being indissociable concerning seaside resorts, the functional typology of former seaside resorts was replacecl by more or less standardised constructions secreting a facility of identification: fishermen's housings, aligned on peninsulas, conceived by François Spoerry at Port-Grimaud, meandering pyramids bearing staggered terraces organised as an amphitheatre around the harbour and imagined by André Minangoy, grapes clung to the roc at Port-la-Galère. The style of the seaside resort isdue to the abundance of façade decoration, set off by the use of various materials. The new seaside resorts retlect Mediterranean architecture, with the prevalence of tenaces extending the outside inside, with architectural motives from the South and t'rom watersports semantics, These waterside constructions allowed the society of the sixties to satisfy their desire of seashore access and beeame the market of a bygone urban development

Résumé :
REpresentational State Transfer or REST is the software architecture style most commonly used for Web Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and was first defined in 2000 by Roy Thomas Fielding in his PhD dissertation Styles and the Design of Network-based Software Architectures and became a standard for the design of the early World Wide Web and Web-based software. The REST standard continues to be influential in the design of Web systems today, however, it was defined over 15 years ago when the Web was still in its infancy. This paper analyzes REST as it was originally defined by Fielding in 2000 and investigates the validity of its original principles in the modern Internet and Web APIs by sampling a number of prominent APIs and their use of REST. REST definitely has drawbacks for certain types of APIs as evidenced by deviations in the majority of sampled APIs. It is not popular with services that are difficult to represent in REST's resource model. However, REST’s popularity has not noticeably decreased since it was defined rather it has most likely increased. Additionally, each use case that is unsupported by REST goes against some REST constraints that crucial in other areas of it implementation. In conclusion, RESTful properties were not only relevant in the late 1990s and early 2000s but continue to be relevant today as evidenced by its continued widespread use by reputable Web APIs.

Résumé :
This thesis details the design of a protocol translator between the industrial-automation protocol OPC UA, and HTTP. The design is based on the architecture of the protocol translator of the Arrowhead framework, and is interoperable with all of its associated protocols. The design requirements are defined to comply with a service-oriented architecture (SOA) and RESTful interaction through HTTP, with minimal requirement of the consuming client to be familiar with OPC UA semantics. Effort is put into making translation as transparent as possible, but limits the scope of this work to exclude a complete semantic translation. The solution presented in this thesis satisfies structural- and foundational interoperability, and bridges interaction to be independent of OPC UA services. The resulting translator is capable of accessing the content of any OPC UA server with simple HTTP-requests, where addressing is oriented around OPC UA nodes.

Résumé :
In line with the growth of software, code bases are getting bigger and more complex. As a result of this, the architectural patterns, which systems rely upon, are becoming increasingly important. Recently, decomposed architectural styles have become a popular choice. This thesis explores system behavior with respect to decomposing system granularity and external communication between the resulting decomposed services. An e-commerce scenario was modeled and implemented at different granularity levels to measure the response time. In establishing the communication, both REST with HTTP and JSON and the gRPC framework were utilized. The results showed that decomposition has impact on run-time behaviour and external communication. The highest granularity level implemented with gRPC for communication establishment adds 10ms. In the context of how the web behaves today, it can be interpreted as feasible but there is no discussion yet on whether it is theoretically desirable.

"Land Mosaic" is a term often referred to by Richard Forman as the fundamentally different ecotopes which play out within a landscape forming a spatial juxtaposition of landscape patchworks. Each ecotope is defined by a variety of factors such as landform, soils, hydrology and weather. In a natural setting, the relationship between two different ecotopes tend to be less abrupt than that of an urban setting. When two different ecotopes meet, a gradual gradient is formed called an Ecotone. A sort of "mosaic" or gradient of ecotopes entwined within the boundary of the ecotone. Gradient is a critical characteristic of many healthy ecotope edges. In the book "Urban Ecology" by R. Forman a comparison is made between this ecological theory and the functioning of an urban setting. This study uses Formans theory in Section A. to analyse the zoning, land use and function of the urban fabric within the diverse neighbourhood of Elsieskraal, CT, following the rapid changing zones along the public river corridor, to reveal relationships between the spatial qualities of ecotope boundaries and the success of the ecotopes functioning. The study finds an interesting process is hindered by an unconventional boundary, perhaps the type of boundary a city planning or urban design method of analysis might have overlooked. The process of crop pollination by Cape honey bees (Apis mellifera capensis). The study found that although no physical conventional barrier stops the bees from flying into the desired agricultural land from their more permanent foraging grounds, they are restricted by the spatial quality of the two ecotopes edges. The lack of curve linear "lobed" edges prevent the interaction between the two ecotopes through short flight range by the bees. In Section B. the document further continues to investigate the process of pollination, bee life cycle and desired nectar-rich plant palette to design system which encourages the interaction whilst assisting the devastating bee crises, increase crop yield. The design lays out a network of proposed corridors in a specific off-set from one another, running through the agricultural land, linking schools environmental, tourism and economic activities as a "spin-off" effect. Emphasis is placed on designing landform and soils within the network of corridors to help grow the largest variety of colourful, nectar abundant and scented flowering species possible, all which are carefully chosen for their desire by the cape honey bee and their flowering time in comparison to local crops. By the morphing the boundary of nectar-rich foraging grounds into the mono-cultural farm land in the form of lobes the project creates an essential relationship between crop and foraging ground, reintroducing a critical process of pollination and bridging the boundary between socioeconomic and environmental aspects.

Résumé :
The objective of this thesis was to design and implement a scalable and load efficient back-end system for web game services. This is of interest since web applications may overnight gain a significant increase in user base, because of viral sharing. Therefore designing the web application to service an increasing amount of users can make or break the application, in regard to keep the user base. Because of this, testing how well the system performs during heavy load can be used as a foundation when making a decision of when and where to scale up the application. The system was to be generically accessible through an Application Programming Interface (API) by the different game services. This was done using a RESTful architecture where emphasise was put on building the system scalable and load efficient. This thesis focuses on designing and implementing such a system, and how load testing can be used to evaluate this systems performance for an increasing amount of simultaneous clients using the web application. The results from load testing the implemented system was above the expectations, considering the hardware used when running the tests and hosting the system. The conclusion of this thesis is that by following REST when designing a web service, scalability becomes a natural part of how one would design the system.

Résumé :
Distributed infrastructures (e.g., water networks and electric Grids) are difficult to manage due to their scale, lack of accessibility, complexity, ageing and uncertainties in knowledge of their structure. In addition they are subject to loads that can be highly variable and unpredictable and to accidental events such as component failure, leakage and malicious tampering. To support in-field operations and central management of these infrastructures, the availability of consistent and up-to-date knowledge about the current state of the network and how it would respond to planned interventions is argued to be highly desirable. However, at present, large-scale infrastructures are “data rich but knowledge poor”. Data, algorithms and tools for network analysis are improving but there is a need to integrate them to support more directly engineering operations. Current ICT solutions are mainly based on specialized, monolithic and heavyweight software packages that restrict the dissemination of dynamic information and its appropriate and timely presentation particularly to field engineers who operate in a resource constrained and less reliable environments. This thesis proposes a solution to these problems by recognizing that current monolithic ICT solutions for infrastructure management seek to meet the requirements of different human roles and operating environments (defined in this work as field and central sides). It proposes an architectural approach to providing dynamic, predictive, user-centric, device and platform independent access to consistent and up-to-date knowledge. This architecture integrates the components required to implement the functionalities of data gathering, data storage, simulation modelling, and information visualization and analysis. These components are tightly coupled in current implementations of software for analysing the behaviour of networks. The architectural approach, by contrast, requires they be kept as separate as possible and interact only when required using common and standard protocols. The thesis particularly concentrates on engineering practices in clean water distribution networks but the methods are applicable to other structural networks, for example, the electricity Grid. A prototype implementation is provided that establishes a dynamic hydraulic simulation model and enables the model to be queried via remote access in a device and platform independent manner. This thesis provides an extensive evaluation comparing the architecture driven approach with current approaches, to substantiate the above claims. This evaluation is conducted by the use of benchmarks that are currently published and accepted in the water engineering community. To facilitate this evaluation, a working prototype of the whole architecture has been developed and is made available under an open source licence.

Résumé :
Wilderness has inspired the imagination and passion of Americans for the past two centuries. However, the places that are most often designated as wilderness are frequently far away and difficult for most people to access. It is therefore important to understand how the idea of wilderness can be rescaled and rethought to allow for its benefits to be more attainable within common and accessible areas. Interstate rest areas provide an excellent subject to study how a wilderness experience can be designed within an area not typically associated with wild nature. The rest areas on Interstate 64 in Virginia provide a good opportunity to conduct this study due to the variety ecological conditions that the interstate passes through. This thesis explores the varying conditions of all the rest areas on Interstate 64 in Virginia and develops a design for one of them, New Kent County Eastbound at mile marker 213. This design process is a site specific model for designing a wilderness experience at an interstate rest area that provides opportunities to experience local ecology, improve storm water management features, and increase wildlife habitat.

Francis, Alexandra Michelle. « REST API to Access and Manage Geospatial Pipeline Integrity Data ». DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2015. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/1496.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Today’s economy and infrastructure is dependent on raw natural resources, like crude oil and natural gases, that are optimally transported through a net- work of hundreds of thousands of miles of pipelines throughout America[28]. A damaged pipe can negatively a↵ect thousands of homes and businesses so it is vital that they are monitored and quickly repaired[1]. Ideally, pipeline operators are able to detect damages before they occur, but ensuring the in- tegrity of the vast amount of pipes is unrealistic and would take an impractical amount of time and manpower[1]. Natural disasters, like earthquakes, as well as construction are just two of the events that could potentially threaten the integrity of pipelines. Due to the diverse collection of data sources, the necessary geospatial data is scat- tered across di↵erent physical locations, stored in di↵erent formats, and owned by di↵erent organizations. Pipeline companies do not have the resources to manually gather all input factors to make a meaningful analysis of the land surrounding a pipe. Our solution to this problem involves creating a single, centralized system that can be queried to get all necessary geospatial data and related informa- tion in a standardized and desirable format. The service simplifies client-side computation time by allowing our system to find, ingest, parse, and store the data from potentially hundreds of repositories in varying formats. An online web service fulfills all of the requirements and allows for easy remote access to do critical analysis of the data through computer based decision support systems (DSS). Our system, REST API for Pipeline Integrity Data (RAPID), is a multi- tenant REST API that utilizes HTTP protocol to provide a online and intuitive set of functions for DSS. RAPID’s API allows DSS to access and manage data stored in a geospatial database with a supported Django web framework. Full documentation of the design and implementation of RAPID’s API are detailed in this thesis document, supplemented with some background and validation of the completed system.
