CICIOTTI, FULVIO. « Oscillator-Based CMOS Readout Interfaces for Gas Sensing Applications ». Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/241089.
Texte intégralDetection of toxic and dangerous gases has always been a need for safety purpose and, in recent years, portable and low-cost gas sensing systems are becoming of main interest. This thesis presents fast, high precision, low-power, versatile CMOS interface circuits for portable gas sensing applications. The target sensors are Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOX) sensors which are widely used due to their inherent compatibility with integrated MEMS technologies. The chosen readout typologies are based on the time-domain Resistor-Controlled Oscillator. This guarantees wide dynamic range, good precision and the ability to cope with the large MOX sensor resistance variations. Four different prototypes have been successfully developed and tested. Chemical measurements with a real SnO2 MOX sensor have also been performed to validate the results, showing a minimum CO detection capability in ambient air of 5 ppm. The ASICs are able to cover 128 dB of DR at 4 Hz of digital output data rate, or 148 dB at 0.4 Hz, while providing a relative error always better than 0.4% (SNDR >48 dB). Target performances have been achieved with aggressive design strategies and system-level optimization, and using a scaled (compared to typical implementations in this field) 130nm CMOS technology provided by Infineon Technologies AG. Power consumption is about 450 μA. Moreover, this work introduces the possibility to use the same oscillator-based architecture to perform capacitive sensors readout. Measurement results with capacitive MEMS sensors have shown 116 dB of DR in CSENS mode, with an SNR of 74 dB at 10 Hz of digital output data rate. The architectures developed in this thesis are compatible with the modern standards in the portable gas sensing industry.
Mobili, Alessandra. « Geopolymeric and cementitious mortars for buildings : comparison at the same strength class ». Doctoral thesis, Università Politecnica delle Marche, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11566/243089.
Texte intégralThe work deals with the study of geopolymeric and cementitious mortars with the same mechanical strength class (R1, R2, R3 and R4 according to UNI EN 1504-3:2006) for building applications. In the first part, cementitious mortars strengthened with fibres or textiles applied to masonry panels assembled with hydrated lime- or cement-based joining mortar were compared. R2 mortar with polypropylene fibres is the best reinforcement, since it hinders the collapse under axial compression and enhances of 47% the diagonal strength of masonry panels assembled with cement-based joining mortar. In the second part, cementitious and geopolymeric mortars belonging to R1, R2, R3 and R4 strength classes were tested and compared in terms of density, workability, dynamic modulus of elasticity, adhesive strength, porosimetry and water vapour permeability. Capillary water absorption, drying and restrained shrinkage, resistance to sulphate attack, corrosion behaviour of embedded black and galvanized reinforcements in chloride-rich solution and after carbonation were also investigated. In geopolymers, drying shrinkage is higher than that of cementitious mortars, but restrained shrinkage is lower due to lower modulus of elasticity. Pore dimensions affect water vapour permeability, more pronounced in geopolymers, and capillary water absorption, much lower in fly ash ones. The high alkalinity of geopolymers delays the achievement of the passive state in particular for galvanized steels, but after one month of curing they reach the same corrosion rates of those embedded in cementitious mortars. During chlorides exposure and after carbonation, fly ash geopolymers offer the highest protection to embedded black bars. On the other hand, cementitious mortars maintain the lowest corrosion rates of galvanized steels. To permit easier practical use, the manufacture of one-part “just add water” geopolymers by substituting the alkaline activators with biomass ash was also investigated.
Abuaddous, Musab. « Experimental analysis of time-temperature dependency of bituminous interlayer shear strength ». Doctoral thesis, Università Politecnica delle Marche, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11566/243102.
Texte intégralThis research focuses on the parameters influence the interlayer shear strength in in flexible pavements through the experimental investigation and the analysis of several parameters that affect interlayer bonding. The interlayer shear strength depends on various parameters such as the asphalt materials, the interface characteristics (presence of reinforcements or tack-coat) and the testing parameters. The first part of the study concentrates on the presence of the tack coat and the testing parameters influencing the shear strength. The specimens were prepared with and without tack coat to evaluate the influence of the tack coat in the interlayer bonding. Several testing parameters were invested using two testing equipments to measure the shear strength (Leutner and ASTRA), testing parameters such as the specimens diameter (100 and 150) mm, the testing temperature (5°, 20° and 40°) C and deformation rate (mm/min) in particular deformation rate (1, 2.5, 5, 10, 25 and 50) mm/min used in Leutner test and (1, 2.5, 5 and 9.5) mm/min in ASTRA test were used the evaluate the interlayer shear strength. The second part investigate the existence of a geocomposite reinforcement between asphalt layers by evaluate interlayer shear strength using ASTRA test and the toughness (i.e. fracture resistance) of the pavement system using the three point bending test. The experimental analysis for the first part showed higher values of the interlayer shear strength for the specimens prepared with tack coat at 5°C and 20°C, at 40°C the tack coat specimens showed a small improvement and in some cases negative influence on the shear strength compared to the specimens prepared without tack coat. The shear strength values showed an increase with the increase of the deformation rate and the decrease of the testing temperature, also the specimens with a 100mm diameters achieved higher result compared to the 150 mm specimens in general. Finally the results of Leutner test were more scattered compared to the result of the ASTRA test under the same deformation rate. Regarding the second part, the Shear tests showed that the reinforcement at the interface reduces the bonding between asphalt layers even if a residual cohesion contribution is provided after shear failure. As far as flexural properties are concerned, the real contribution of the reinforcement consists in the delay of crack propagation rather than in the inhibition of crack initiation.
