The affirmation of strong and competitive identities has gained, contemporaneously, a lot of relevance not only among countries and cities but also in the regions. This movement arises primarily as a response and reaction to the globalization process. Given the homogenization, territories have been increasingly working and investing in their differentiation by building stronger identities, promoting them both internally and externally. Considering the context of the municipality of Gouveia, this study will be remedied by the development of a practical project focusing local promotion as a new centrality of the Serra da Estrela. In this sense, identity and branding were discussed as major themes, with special focus on brand place, in order to develop a theoretical framework able to support the project. This was followed by the analysis of two case studies, with similar premises. Finally, and posteriorly to an analysis of the region, it was developed the practical “Design as a promoter of regional identity”, that led to the proposal to promote Gouveia tourist destination for mountain / nature.

Résumé :
There has been almost fifteen years of political controversy surrounding changes to the rules and procedures by which aircraft conduct their flight within regional Australia. Decisions based on a predominately heuristic (rule of thumb) approach to design have had many adverse consequences for the integrity of the proximity warning function. A sound mathematical model is required to establish this function on a mature engineering foundation. To achieve this, the proximity warning function has been investigated as a hybrid-system. This approach recognises the dual nature of the design: that aircraft dynamics give rise to continuous mathematical models while the communication protocols controlling proximity require discrete mathematical approaches. The blending of each aspect has yielded a deeper insight into the operational limitations and failure modes of this function. The presentation of the thesis follows a design thread through the function. It begins with a description of existing standards and implementations. Risk models are then developed. The pilot interface is recognised as a primary design constraint. Mathematical models are then developed to describe the topology of flow, proximity dynamics, and the scheduling constraints associated with visual, voice, and data-link communications required by the proximity warning function. These analyses show that many aspects of design can be bounded by analytical formulae that bring new robustness to the design and resolve some of the misconceptions arising from the often inaccurate perceptions of present airspace operations. Failure modes, unaccounted for in existing designs are found to actually aggravate failure in the very situations in which the airspace design should be robust and should act to prevent collisions. In particular, there are divergences of performance between the demands required by the system design and the ability of the pilot to deliver such performances. In some cases, these failures may be traced to policy decisions such as service between Instrument Flight Rule and Visual Flight Rule category aircraft. On the basis of the conclusions of this research, a formal engineering review of the proximity warning function is required to assure the containment of the likelihood of mid-air collision for all future operations.

Résumé :
The purpose of this work is to develop a preliminary interior design of a regional aircraft considering ergonomic and cost aspects. The use of virtual humans provides a better interpretation of the aircraft interior environment, making possible to simulate movements and passenger comfort aspects. The importance of this study becomes evident through the necessity of the aircraft manufacturer of predicting human behavior during all the flight phases. This text also aims to present the difficulty to accomplish the design requirements and at same time meet the market expectations without oversizing the aircraft. The dissertation is applied to an aircraft (called "Unique") developed in the context of the EMBRAER Engineering Specialization Program (PEE) and includes different features of the aircraft interior environment as: cross section definition, seat configuration and passenger cabin layout. The ergonomics analysis comprises the living space (distance between seats) and oxygen mask accessibility. The used method was RULA tool (available in the Catia V5 package) that evaluate individuals' exposures to limb disorders like postures, forces and muscle activities that have been shown to contribute to Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSIs). A preliminary cost analysis is also presented by comparing a standard (30 pax at 32" seat pitch) and an advanced (28 pax at 30"/36" seat pitch) aircraft interior configuration.

Alila, Younes. « A regional approach for estimating design storms in Canada ». Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/6831.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The current design storm estimation method used in Canada is based on single site frequency analysis and single site intensity-duration-frequency relationships and involves large uncertainties, especially at short-term record stations and ungauged sites. To overcome the shortcoming of the current approach, a new improved method based on regional frequency analysis and regional depth-duration-frequency equations is proposed. The L-moments are used in the three stages of regional frequency analysis, namely the delineation of homogenous regions, the identification of a regional parent distribution, and the estimation of distribution's parameters. Following a numerical analysis of short duration (5 minutes to 24 hours) rainfall extremes from 375 stations, it was found that Canada may be considered as one homogeneous region where L-skewness and L-kurtosis display no significant spatial variability. Also, based on mean annual precipitation (map), Canada may be subdivided into climatologically homogeneous sub-regions, wherein the L-coefficient of variation in virtually constant. The regional parent distribution was identified as the general extreme value (GEV), the parameters of which depend on the map and storm duration. These findings are different from the present method, where the extreme value type I (EVI) is used irrespective of storm duration. A hierarchical regional approach is proposed for fitting the identified GEV distribution, where the L-skewness, L-coefficient of variation, and mean are estimated on a regional, sub-regional, and at-site basis, respectively. Monte Carlo simulation studies indicate that the hierarchical regional GEV frequency approach is substantially more accurate than the single site frequency method. In particular, it is shown that three times as much data are required for the single site method to provide the same accuracy as the hierarchical regional approach. The depth-duration and depth-frequency ratios computed by the developed hierarchical regional GEV approach are used to assess the hypothesis that convective cells associated with short duration storms (i.e. less than 120 minutes) have common properties in different hydrologic regions. Depth-duration ratios (defined as the ratios of the t-min to the 60-min rainfall depth of the same return period) are found to be independent of return period and geographical location for any storm less than 60 minutes. However, for storms of longer durations, depth-duration ratios depend on both the return period and the geographical location indexed by the at-site map. Depth-frequency ratios (defined as the ratios of the T-yr to the 10-yr rainfall depths of the same storm duration) are also found to depend on the return period and geographical location. Hence, the assumption of geographically independent depth-frequency ratios used in previous studies is incorrect. Generalized expressions of depth-duration and depth-frequency ratios are combined to develop a set of regional depth-duration-frequency equations that are applicable in Canada. These equations are found to be more accurate than other regional equations developed in previous studies. Furthermore, a split sampling experiment has verified that the proposed equations reproduce the rainfall frequency data at long-term record stations in different hydrologic zones better than the existing single site AES equations. Finally, the proposed hierarchical regional GEV approach and depth-duration-frequency equations are combined to develop a new design storm estimation method at ungauged sites. This method is shown to be a viable alternative to the current arbitrary interpolation procedure from isoline maps.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Prior to the Iraqi invasion and occupation, there was limited landscaping in Kuwait. Public gardens, highways, streets, governmental and private buildings had been planted to some extent. In the post invasion days the Amir of Kuwait has set a goal to beautify Kuwait by intensified landscaping. Responsibility for this Plan was given to the Public Authority for Agriculture and Fisheries (PAAF) which in turn, commissioned the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) to develop the Plan, in collaboration with PAAF staff. Currently, a Strategic and Master Plan for "Greenery" Development (1995-2010) is being prepared. The plan will consist of guidelines for the gradual landscaping of Kuwait focusing on the urban areas. The objectives of this thesis is to ensure the development of guidelines into a comprehensive body of knowledge which takes these categories into consideration: sociocultural factors, functional factors, environmental/ecological factors and aesthetic factors. It is hoped that this information could be synthesized into a thoughtful, utilitarian landscape design guideline for Kuwait.

Seeckt, Kolja. « Conceptual design and investigation of hydrogen-fueled regional freighter aircraft ». Licentiate thesis, KTH, Farkost och flyg, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-26348.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis presents the conceptual design and comparison of five versions of regional freighter aircraft based on the ATR 72. The versions comprise four baseline designs differing in their propulsion systems (jet/turboprop) and the fuel they use (kerosene/hydrogen). The fifth version is an improved further development of the hydrogen-fueled turboprop aircraft. For aircraft modeling the aircraft design software PrADO is applied. The criteria for the overall assessment of the individual aircraft versions are energy use, climate impact in terms of global warming potential (GWP) and direct operating costs (DOC). The results indicate that, from an aircraft design perspective, hydrogen is feasible as fuel for regional freighter aircraft and environmentally promising: The hydrogen versions consume less energy to perform a reference mission of 926 km (500 NM) with a payload of 8.1 t of cargo. The climate impact caused by the emissions of hydrogen-fueled regional freighter aircraft is less than 1 % of that of kerosene-fueled aircraft. Given the circumstance that sustainably produced hydrogen can be purchased at a price that is equivalent to kerosene with respect to energy content, hydrogen-fueled regional freighter aircraft are also economically competitive to current kerosene-fueled freighters. In consequence, regional freighters appear especially favorable as first demonstrators of hydrogen as aviation fuel, and cargo airlines and logistics companies may act as technology drivers for more sustainable air traffic. The potential of regional freighter aircraft alone to mitigate climate change is marginal. The share of national and regional air cargo traffic in global manmade climate impact lies in the region of 0.016 % to 0.064 %, which also represents the maximum reduction potential. The presented work was to a large extend performed during the joint research project "The Green Freighter" under the lead of Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg).

Résumé :
Envisioned in the next 15 to 30 years in the aviation industry, hybrid-electric propulsion offers theopportunity to integrate new technology bricks providing additional degrees of freedom to improveoverall aircraft performance, limit the use of non-renewable fossil resources and reduce the aircraftenvironmental footprint. Today, hybrid-electric technology has mainly been applied to groundbased transports, cars, buses and trains, but also ships. The feasibility in the air industry has to beestablished and the improvement in aircraft performance has still to be demonstrated. This thesisaims to evaluate the energy savings enabled by electric power in the case of a 70-seat regionalaircraft. First, energy saving opportunities are identified from the analysis of the propulsion andaerodynamic efficiencies of a conventional twin turboprop aircraft. The potential benefits comingfrom the variation of the size of prime movers and the new power managements with the use ofbatteries are studied. Also, possible aerodynamic improvements enabled by new propellerintegrations are considered. For each topic, simplified analyses provide estimated potential ofenergy saving. These results are then used to select four electrified propulsion systems that arestudied in more detail in the thesis: a parallel-hybrid, a turboelectric with distributed propulsion, apartial-turboelectric with high-lift propellers and an all-electric. Evaluating the selected hybrid-electric aircraft is even more challenging that the sizing of the different components, the energymanagement strategies and the mission profiles one can imagine are many and varied. Inaddition, the overall aircraft design process and the evaluation tools need to be adaptedaccordingly. The Airbus in-house Multidisciplinary Design Optimisation platform named XMDO,which includes most of the required modifications, is eventually selected and further developedduring the thesis. For examples, new parametric component models (blown wing, electrical motor, gas turbine, propeller, etc…) are created, a generic formulation for solving the propulsion systemequilibrium is implemented, and simulation models for take-off and landing are improved. In orderto evaluate the energy efficiency of the hybrid-electric aircraft, a reference aircraft equipped with aconventional propulsion system is first optimised with XMDO. Different optimisation algorithms aretested, and the consistency of the new design method is checked. Then, all the hybrid-electricconfigurations are optimised under the same aircraft design requirements as the reference. Forthe electrical components, two levels of technology are defined regarding the service entry date ofthe aircraft. The optimisation results for the turboelectric and the partial-turboelectric are used tobetter understand the potential aerodynamic improvements identified in the first part of the thesis.Optimisations for the parallel-hybrid, including different battery recharge scenarios, highlight thebest energy management strategies when batteries are used as secondary energy sources. All theresults are finally compared to the reference in terms of fuel and energy efficiencies, for the twoelectrical technology levels. The last part of the thesis focuses on the all-electric aircraft, and aimsat identifying the minimum specific energy required for batteries as a function of the aircraft designrange. A trade study is also carried-out in accordance with the service entry date for the otherelectrical components

Rajkumar, Vishnu Ganesh. « Design Optimization of a Regional Transport Aircraft with Hybrid Electric Distributed Propulsion Systems ». Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/84494.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
In recent years, there has been a growing shift in the world towards sustainability. For civil aviation, this is reflected in the goals of several organizations including NASA and ACARE as significantly increased fuel efficiency along with reduced harmful emissions in the atmosphere. Achieving the goals necessitates the advent of novel and radical aircraft technologies, NASA's X-57, is one such concept using distributed electric propulsion (DEP) technology. Although practical implementation of DEP is achievable due to the scale invariance of highly efficient electric motors, the current battery technology restricts its adoption for commercial transport aircraft. A Hybrid Electric Distributed Propulsion (HEDiP) system offers a promising alternative to the all-electric system. It leverages the benefits of DEP when coupled with a hybrid electric system. One of the areas needing improvement in HEDiP aircraft design is the fast and accurate estimation of wing aerodynamic characteristics in the presence of multiple propellers. A VLM based estimation technique was developed to address this requirement. This research is primarily motivated by the need to have mature conceptual design methods for HEDiP aircraft. Therefore, the overall research objective is to develop an effective conceptual design capability based on a proven multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) framework, and to demonstrate the resulting capability by applying it to the conceptual design of a regional transport aircraft (RTA) with HEDiP systems.

Résumé :
Puerto Penasco is a small Mexican town (pop. 26,141) located on the Sonora coast 65 miles from the U.S. border at Lukeville, Arizona. In recent years, over-fishing in the Gulf of California has resulted in a sharp decline in Puerto Penasco's fishing industry. Tourism is an economic alternative which holds potential for revitalizing the local economy, if planning and design for tourism is carefully conceived and executed. Review of international tourism and examination of economic, socio-cultural, and environmental impacts of tourism indicate that traditional forms of large-scale mass tourism may not be appropriate for Puerto Penasco. An alternative, integrated form of tourism is proposed for Puerto Penasco that respects local landscapes as well as local culture and heritage. Revitalization of the historic Old Town and the Harbor areas is proposed to attract tourists to existing urban areas while preserving natural open space along the coast.

Silva, Sallet Dayane. « Regional flood frequency analysis : evaluation of the design flood for 5 Brazilian dams ». Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2019. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/18856/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Engineers in the water resources field frequently have to estimate the probability of exceedance related to a determined flow value at a chosen river cross-section, also known as flood quantile. This estimation is necessary in order to proceed with the design of different structures, such as dam spillways, and for other functions, such as risk management. The accurate estimation of the flood quantile of interest is not an easy task, as return periods of interest usually require a data record that exceeds the length of the available gauging record at the site of concern. In order to accurately estimate flood quantiles at a given river cross-section, the regional flood frequency analysis (RFFA) is often used, allowing to compensate the lack of data by gathering information from other gauging stations which are supposed to be similar to the target station. The present Thesis deals with the evaluation of the 1,000-year flood quantile for five Brazilian dams based on a RFFA. The five studied dams are: Cachoeira Dourada, Ponte Alta do Bom Jesus, Quatiara, Poxoréo and Volta Grande. An index-flood method is applied as a usual approach in RFFA. The Region of Influence approach is then considered in order to define a homogeneous pooling-group of sites for a given target site. Overall, 79 gauging stations are examined for the evaluation of the 1,000-year flood quantile.

Résumé :
This study has presented a Planning Support System (PSS) design which is an integrated collection of computer technologies, and models, organized in the form of a toolbox to enhance and improve the planning practice. Such a system combines and facilitates different technologies in one well-designed environment to solve planning problems. Theses problems could address both routine (managerial) and non-routine (forecasting, location-allocation) activities. My goal in this thesis is to conceptually design a PSS from a regional planning perspective. If a Planning Support System is designed for the most complex planning problems (which typically concern regional planning issues), it would be adaptable to the other, more managerial types of activities. The process of Planning Support System would be similar, but not identical to the flow of strategic planning. The PSS would consist of five phases and each phase would include different combination of databases and workflows supported by recent and appropriate computer technology packages.

This paper analyzes data from a study which focused on understanding the informal scientific communication network among Biotechnology firms in the Boston-Cambridge Biotech area. A previous study (Allen, et. al., 2009) provided an overview of the network, how the firms were connected to one another and the frequency of the communications. The analysis for this study focuses on the firms and their communication patterns to the universities - to better understand the potentially continuing role of the universities. The goal of the study is to analyze the factors that influenced communication patterns. The following factors were studied: size, age, type of firm and degrees of centrality. In conclusion, the study finds the universities are tightly integrated into the biotech network. Some firms chose to communicate only with the universities. In addition, we find size and age to have the greatest influence on this. Finally, degrees of centrality also play a significant role in the tendency of research scientists within firms to communicate with universities.

Résumé :
As our southwestern cities continue to grow in essentially uncontrolled and sprawling patterns it becomes increasingly apparent that new planning approaches and design guidelines must be generated to rectify past and combat future problems. Today, many community developments focus decision making principles on purely economic gain at the expense of addressing the socio-cultural, aesthetic, functional, economic, and environmental issues. In an attempt to address these issues, we employed both qualitative and quantitative methods of research. The qualitative methods included: a case study analysis of past, present and future communities; a literature review of past communities and new theoretical movements; structured interviews with real estate developers in the southwest; and participant observation encompassing peer dialogue and design reviews. The quantitative methods included statistical analysis of questionnaires given to designers and developers practicing in the southwest. A series of design and planning guidelines were distilled from this research. They were then tested by applying them to the design of a new community in the southwestern United States.

During my childhood and until today I have been linked to the work of my parents, they work in the market plaza villa sur de villa el salvador, I always thought of improving their workplace, making it attractive and pleasant for both users and users. workers. In this search I began to interact with the market workers and with the activities they carried out, finding stalls that offer products from other departments of Peru, and not only that, but also stalls where they sell typical jungle foods have been implemented. , Sierra and the coast of Peru, also incorporated folk dances on its anniversary as an attraction for consumers and at the same time organize festivities, all these changes and characteristics generated spatial and organizational needs. That is why I decided to design a market that can meet all these deficiencies, adding the essence of the place and its inhabitants, because Villa El Salvador was born from a provincial migration, this generated a cultural diversity that has lasted over time and is projected in the streets, their food, religious beliefs, customs activities and altogether in the markets. Thanks to this research, I was able to design a market with the essence of the place, complying with the necessary spaces for its traditional activities, offering the various native products and gastronomy from different regions of Peru, and promoting regional cultural diversity as an attraction for the market.

Résumé :
During the 20th Century, concern started to grow that the towns of England were losing their individual identity. This unease became most evident in the development of new houses. The aim of the study is therefore to produce a framework that encapsulates recommendations to assist in the development of regionally responsive houses. The research is located in England, and specifically in the market towns of the North East. This is because Northumberland is perceived as a remote county, and therefore strongly expressive of the region. Within the county, the market towns are centres of traditional lifestyles, and therefore places where regionalism is most likely to be found. The focus is on domestic architecture, as this is individuals’ most immediate and personal interaction with the built environment. An early part of the study was to investigate the concepts of regionalism and regional architecture. The history of regionalism has been a transition from local methods to increasingly standardised approaches to design. This has resulted in a loss of identity through the use of design strategies that are not context driven. It is a lack of focus on region that makes similar architectural responses ubiquitous. Without a concerted focus on specific places, the nuances of climate, culture, and materiality cannot be sufficiently explored. Although there has been significant research into variation of architectural response and material use, there is no overall picture of the significance of vernacular architecture. However, as these houses are historic by nature, questions emerge about their relevance and whether they are replicable. The neo-vernacular revival may be a response. The study confirms the widely-held belief that speculative housebuilders dominate the market for new homes in England. These housebuilders started to produce the same houses all over the country, with little challenge from development control. The response was residential design guides, which aim to preserve the unique qualities of the built environment that have contributed to the character of market towns. However, their consistent emphasis on the past, does not offer the basis for developing a framework that can deliver contemporary regionally-expressive domestic architecture. Thus, a fundamental appraisal of home was undertaken, as a means of unpacking positive interaction between people, place and building that can form a set of socio-cultural values. The purpose of the appraisal was to identify aspects that may contribute to regional identity. This was applied in terms of the development of market towns in England, and a system for the architectural analysis of their houses. Corbridge in Northumberland, was selected as a typical market town, and the system was employed to assess its houses. The outcomes were verified by similar analyses of schemes in three other market towns in the region. Residents in all four towns were interviewed to determine the factors that influenced their purchase of the houses. Architects, planners and house developers were also interviewed to determine their perspectives. All parts of the study contributed to the framework, which is organised in terms of historical context, geographical context and design considerations based on the architectural analysis.

Résumé :
Much has been written on postwar suburbs in North America, and their impact on society. What are missing are histories of the housing that exists within these suburbs, and how both the idea behind suburbs, and the realities of the time, had an impact on the design of such housing. For this work, Bramalea, Ontario, was chosen as a case study location to begin exploring suburban housing design. Begun in 1958, Bramalea was unique in that it was designed as Canada's first suburban satellite city, which meant it was planned as a self-sufficient community. Houses in Bramalea were a product of both their location, but also of outside influences. Economic conditions, technological advances, and design trends, all influenced the history and evolution of suburban housing. Popular culture and the changing ideas about the nature of suburbs also played an important role in the houses that were built in Bramalea.

Résumé :
Transit agencies at all levels of government monitor trends in services, operations, and ridership using performance indicators. Federal and state agencies use these performance indicators in the appropriation of funds to transit agencies. Public transportation is subsidized through federal, state and local programs while only a portion of the operating expenses are covered through rider fares. In order to gather information on riders and travel patterns, transit agencies primarily focus on current transit riders, many of which are transit dependent populations. By definition, these populations use public transit services as the primary or only means of transportation. As a result, this offers limited opportunity for ridership growth among transit dependent populations. One segment of a population that offers high opportunity for ridership growth is commuters. A commuter is considered a worker that travels from home to work on a regular basis. However, in the case of commuter oriented transit services, it is important to survey non-riders so that any new services will have the greatest potential of increasing ridership among commuters. This report explores the potential commuter demand for additional or express bus services provided by San Luis Obispo Regional Transit Authority (RTA). RTA operates countywide fixed-route bus services and para-transit services for San Luis Obispo County. This report focuses on RTA’s Route 9, which operates between the North County and the Central County. In order to collect data from non-riders, electronics survey instruments were created and distributed using employer e-mail addresses. The survey instruments were sent to three major employers in San Luis Obispo County: California State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly), the City of San Luis Obispo, and the County of San Luis Obispo. A link to one of the surveys instruments was also included on San Luis Obispo Council of Government’s (SLOCOG) Rideshare’s March 2013 e-newsletter as a way to reach additional non-riders. Analysis of the survey responses resulted in the recommendations to RTA. Recommendations are separated into two categories: (1) Expansion of RTA Route 9 services and (2) Future RTA non-rider outreach.

Résumé :

This study seeks to understand the larger cultural context that gave rise to what is referred to as "non-design," a term designated to denote a particular aesthetic that is characterized by a suspicion of, and/or rejection of, "conscious" design, while embracing various phenomenon that emerge without "intention" or "deliberate human design." The study traces the phenomenon of "non-design" in British and American design culture of the postwar period. The author argues that following Friedrich von Hayek's theories of the "undesigned" nature of social institutions and his concept of a "spontaneous order" of the 1940s, non-design first emerged in design discourse and practice in the early 1950s in England, particularly in the work of certain members of the Independent Group, and by the mid-1960s it gained currency in the United States in the architectural and urban theories of Charles Moore, Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, and particularly in Reyner Banham's writing on American urbanism. While rarely made explicit, this dissertation argues that the concept of non-design played an important role in design and urban debates of the postwar period.

Résumé :
Thesis (MS en S)--Stellenbosch University, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The urban designer works within an environment characterized by constraints. Control mechanisms are part of these constraints. They were created out of necessity because the control of the urban environment became strained as cities grew in size. In the beginning control mechanisms regulated the urban environment to create better public safety. This objective evolved to include aesthetics and sustainability of the environment. Controls, however, tended to become standardized and were often blindly applied irrespective of changed circumstances and contexts. Control mechanisms include inter alia height, density, bulk, and aesthetic controls, which can be applied to regulate form, space and behavioural or activity patterns. These control mechanisms generally embrace a system of codes embodied in legislation enforceable in law. Urban designers should realize and take full advantage of the potential of the law as an urban design control element. This study examines the nature of control mechanisms as applied to town planning in general and urban design in particular and their efficacy in achieving and maintaining a range of human and social objectives. To this end, attention is paid to examining historical precedent, examples reflecting different cultures and approaches and resultant urban forms. On the basis of the aforementioned this study aims to identify a range of urban design principles and to propose suggestions as to how control mechanisms as part of a system of law can best be applied. A case study of central business district sites in Durbanville, Western Cape is researched.

Groundwater models are often developed as tools for environmental decision-making. However, sparse data availability can limit a model's utility by confounding attempts to select a single structural representation of a system or to find a unique and optimal set of model parameters. As a result, estimates of prediction uncertainty and the value of further data collection may be important results of a modeling effort. The Discrimination/Inference to Reduce Expected Cost Technique (DIRECT) is a new method for developing an ensemble of models that collectively define prediction uncertainty in a manner that supports risk-based decision making and monitoring network design optimization. We apply aspects of DIRECT to a modeling investigation of an aquifer system in Central Utah where a major Coalbed Methane gas field is located and a new approach for stimulating gas production is being explored. In the first stage of this study we develop an ensemble of regional MODFLOW models and calculate their relative likelihood using a set of observation data. These regional results and likelihoods are then transferred to a regional MT3D residence time model and to a local advective transport model to provide further information for the well design. A cost function is applied to the transport results to assess the relative expected costs of several proposed well field designs. The set of hydrologic results and associated likelihoods from the ensemble are combined into cost curves that allow for the selection of designs that minimize expected costs. These curves were found to be a useful tool for visualizing the ways that design decisions and hydrologic results interact to generate costs. Furthermore, these curves reveal ways in which uncertainty can add to the cost of implementing a design. A final analysis explored the cost of having uncertain model results by applying and manipulating synthetic likelihood distributions to the transport results. These results suggest the value that may be added by reducing uncertainty through data collection. Overall, the application of DIRECT was found to provide a rich set of information that is not available when ensemble methods and cost consideration are omitted from a modeling study.

Résumé :
Today, park use is at an all-time high with the number of city parks increasing at a growing rate each year. Designing a successful outdoor neighborhood recreational facility insures that the surrounding population has an enjoyable, safe, and lasting space to recreate. This study properly illustrates the process in designing a successful neighborhood park. A demographic analysis, conducted in Southern California's Coachella Valley, identified three neighborhood parks as ideal study sites. Likewise, the review of existing literature, site observations, and the analysis of a carefully designed survey developed the appropriate methodology in meeting the intent of this study. As author, I wish to stress the importance of process. If the designer of a neighborhood facility is to meet the recreational goals of any community, he or she must first take action in understanding the appropriate process. Once this understanding is achieved, effective design guidelines may then be developed.

The general objective of the research is to identify the graphic and editorial transformations of the newspaper Diário Popular de Pelotas between 1890 and 2016, tensioning how these relate to the local character of the journal and the contextual and technological changes that affect the publication. The methodological procedures are based on the model presented by Fonseca, Gomes and Campos (2016) for investigations into the history of design from printed materials. It covers the researcher's approach to the socio-historical context of the print from bibliographical and documentary research and graphic analysis of the journal itself. The cor-pus of analysis is composed of the newspaper's anniversary editions published at the begin-ning of each decade, as well as five other issues considered relevant in the pre-analysis survey, which resulted in a total of 18 editions, evaluated in their editorial aspects (covers, sections, columns and special pages, inserts and supplements) and graphic aspects (support, format, grid, newspaper name, typography and images). It can be observed that the construction of the editorial and graphic identity of the newspaper is associated with the principles of lo-cal/regional journalism, and turns to the scope in which it circulates – Pelotas and its sur-rounding cities. The editorial organization in special sections and columns, as well as the hierarchy of information that prioritizes the local news (with the largest section, supplements or with prominent spaces) lends visibility to these principles. Throughout the evaluated pe-riod, there is an editorial and graphic consistency, although the newspaper goes through ad-aptations related to technological and contextual changes. These changes are made explicit to readers as a strategy to renew the contract of reading between the paper and its public, especially in the newspaper's anniversary editions, where the publication tells and recounts its history, reaffirming its role in the community in which it circulates.

Résumé :
This study examines landscape regulations and their potential to improve the urban environments of developing countries. The literature on environmental problems of developing countries suggests that landscape solutions must be both economic and environmentally sound. Religion and cultural ethics are the basis for landscape values in the Muslim society. Religion governs Muslims. The religious landscape values would be readily acceptable by Islamic society when used as an implementation strategy. Model landscape guidelines are presented for Karachi, Pakistan which should be helpful in preparing actual landscape regulations. Karachi's economic constraints pose unavoidable restrictions. Setting up design standards requires a careful and realistic approach. Suggestions are made to build up a conceptual policy umbrella at the national, and provincial level, providing a basis for developing landscape regulations by local governments.

Résumé :
The electric vehicles (EVs) are emerging as an alternative solution to the conventional gasoline vehicles. The EV market faces different issues related to limited range, which are associated with the battery technology and the charging network. A clear emphasis is placed on how well the supporting recharging facilities (RFs) are deployed in order to reduce the limited range. The aim of this study is to investigate how suitably the locations for RFs can be chosen in order to satisfy the demand. Charging demand is a multifaceted problem, the majority of them charge at home and do not experience the maximum range of the EV in an attempt to avoid being stranded with a flat battery, and the deployment of rapid chargers is costly. A desired balance between supply and demand can be achieved by identifying the most influential factors affecting the design and use of the RFs. The fundamental monitoring of the use of RFs would reflect the quality of design, highlight the emerging design needs, and assist with the strategic deployment of the RFs. The interest in alternative transport is shaped primarily by consumer perceptions and users’ feedback. This thesis integrates visual and statistical elements in order to understand the end-‐user emerging design needs and to model the RFs. In this thesis, over 12,725 charging events were analysed in conjunction to 20 interviews with EV users and stakeholders. With the use of an agent-‐based modelling technique, it has been possible to capture and simulate the electric-‐mobility system. By means of integrated spatiotemporal modelling, the results indicated that the proposed model is capable of identifying candidate locations for deploying RFs. A multi method approach is presented to understand the concepts of, model and design the RFs. The outcome of this research should be of interest to planning authorities and policy makers of alternative means of transport.

The University Square Development Proposal (USDP) explores the redevelopment of the underutilized University Square site (the Site) in the City of San Luis Obispo (the City.) The Sites proximity to California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly), a university with significant student housing needs, makes it an ideal location for student housing. The City has also expressed interest in the Site, having identified it in the General Plan Land Use and Circulation Element (LUCE) update as a “Special Planning Area”. The LUCE proposes a new mixed-use typology on the Site that may include a mixture of multi-family housing, retail services, entertainment, and recreation. The USDP is an early take on redevelopment of the Site, and provides a development option that accommodates both the objectives of Cal Poly, by providing student housing, and the City, by proposing a mixed-use development typology. To this end, the USDP includes a site assessment, project program, design vision, and financial analysis. The USDP concludes with project evaluations and lessons learned.

This study develops a strategy design towards the creation of a set of bike sharing services in the Aveiro region, mainly surrounding the “Ria”, taking advantage of the flat geography conducive to the development of these activities, promoting the use of bicycle and the use as well of various bike paths available and underutilized in the region, responding effectively to the weakness of the regional bike share systems. It was found several problems in the service / free bikes of Aveiro, better known as " BUGA ", and the program “CicloRia” for functionality issues and several limitations in those bicycles, highlighted in the municipalities of Ovar and Murtosa. All these constraints contribute to a limited use of the two regional services, and apparently for recreational purposes, clearly moving away from the real purpose of their European counterparts, in order to offer appropriate services that allow everyday use and completeness of vehicles. All these problems justify various alternative solutions working in parallel with existing services in order to broaden the options of choice. The three new services are explained in detail and they are deployed in the region within six zones and are grouped on a common brand, " Salina". All of them are based on bike share operations but with different modalities depending on the needs of the user. The factor of intermodality is a plus, and allows the transportation of bicycles from “Salina” services, on trains and ferry's between S. Jacinto and Forte da Barra. It is concluded that the developed project offers various solutions based on social cooperatives and common good, motivating users to leave their cars and enjoy the cycling in various scenarios, whether recreational or professional, contributing to a green economy and healthier lives.

Résumé :
Windfarming can provide a reliable, renewable source of energy; its visible presence in the landscape can generate heightened awareness of energy use and sources. Sensitive integration of the technology with the environment is important for promoting sustainability in the region; it must also address public concern for visual quality. This study addresses the siting and design issues raised by proposed windfarms. Three windfarm design scenarios are thus developed and visualized in 3D within the region of Howe Sound, including the town of Squamish, British Columbia. A number of North American and European precedents are examined in terms of public education and acceptance, visual impacts, arrangement and public involvement. Initially, eleven sites within the region are considered in total, based on stakeholder, community and expert analysis. Site analysis is composed of a wind resource and visual inventory, and viewshed analysis. This highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the potential sites. A series of principles identify cultural, aesthetic and pragmatic rationale to guide the site selection process, and evaluating certain sites and designs as being better or worse than others. Design criteria which are explicit and measurable are developed for these principles, providing targets for site selection, informing design process and serving as a baseline for design analysis. Three favourable sites that will best cater to these motivations are selected for windfarm design and visualization. These designs are quantitatively and qualitatively assessed based on their adherence to the design criteria, and are ranked according to how well they satisfy the aesthetic, cultural and pragmatic principles for windfarming. A set of final recommendations for Squamish are offered that will facilitate planning and help to build citizen awareness building process for development of a wind resource industry in the region.

Résumé :
This thesis establishes the post-war regional impact of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Circulation Department (Circ) which sent touring exhibitions to museums and art schools around the UK in the period 1947-1977, an area previously unexplored to any substantial depth. A simplistic stereotypical dyad of metropolitan authority and provincial deference is examined and evidence given for a more complex flow between Museum and regions. The Introduction outlines the thesis aims and the Department’s role in the dissemination of art and design. The thesis is structured around questions examining the historical significance of Circ, the display and installation of Circ’s regional exhibitions, and the flow of influence between regions and museum. Context establishes Circ not as a straightforward continuation of Cole’s Victorian mission but as historically embedded in the post-war period. The Historical Study outlines the Department’s origins and then divides into three sections; 1947-60 under Keeper Peter Floud, 1960-75 under Keeper Hugh Wakefield, and 1975-77 until closure, also covering Circ’s legacy within the Museum. Debates concerning the industrial and commodified inform an investigation of Circ’s acquisitions; design displays are discussed in relation to practices of vision. The evaluation concludes that Circ’s approach was tripartite, based on scholarly provenance, attention to design process and embrace of the contemporary, presented with some innovative displays. Two chapters concerning Impact on Regional Museums and Impact on Schools of Art, Designers & Industry make an original contribution to knowledge in establishing a balanced picture of the regional impact of the Department. Circ’s post-war activities are assessed using new primary research conducted at archives in Brighton, Cardiff, Liverpool, and Manchester, and interviews with former Circ staff. Circ is posited as a uniquely distanced but authoritative locus between state, design culture and industry and as historically significant in design and museology. The Conclusion summarises the Circulation model.
