Résumé :
This article engages in discussion on the concepts of recognition and redistribution in contemporary politic theory. It discusses the debate on the problem of identity-based injustice and the problem of economic injustice and charts the surprisingly diverse range of uses of the term recognition in recent political thought. It evaluates whether recognition is a discrete good or a general medium of social life and discusses the object of recognition and its relation to the idea of justice. It also analyses American critical theorist Nancy Fraser's views about the conflicts that arise between the politics of recognition and the politics of redistribution.

Résumé :
Sensing of user input lies at the core of HCI research. Deciding which input mechanisms to use and how to implement them such that they work in a way that is easy to use, robust to various environmental factors and accurate in reconstruction of the users intent is a tremendously challenging problem. The main difficulties stem from the complex nature of human behavior which is highly non-linear, dynamic and context dependent and can often only be observed partially. Due to these complexities, research has turned its attention to data-driven techniques in order to build sophisticated and robust input recognition mechanisms. In this chapter we discuss the most important aspects that constitute data-driven signal analysis approaches. The aim is to provide the reader with an overall understanding of the process irrespective of the exact choice of sensor or machine learning algorithm.

Résumé :
Pattern recognition prowess served our ancestors well. However, today we are confronted by a deluge of data that are far more abstract, complicated, and difficult to interpret than were annual seasons and the sounds of predators. The number of possible patterns that can be identified relative to the number that are genuinely useful has grown exponentially—which means that the chances that a discovered pattern is useful is rapidly approaching zero. Coincidental streaks, clusters, and correlations are the norm—not the exception. Our challenge is to overcome our inherited inclination to think that all patterns are meaningful.Computer algorithms can easily identify an essentially unlimited number of phantom patterns and relationships that vanish when confronted with fresh data. The paradox of big data is that the more data we ransack for patterns, the more likely it is that what we find will be worthless. Our challenge is to overcome our inherited inclination to think that all patterns are meaningful.

Den Otter, Ronald C. A Perfectionist Argument for Legal Recognition of Polyamorous Relationships. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198786429.003.0005.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Although several American legal scholars have defended the constitutional right to marry more than one person at the same time on substantive due process or equal-protection grounds, few have underscored the possibility that plural marriage could be beneficial. The standard liberal approach eschews comparative judgments between monogamy and polyamory, ultimately depending on the value of the exercise of autonomy for its own sake. The problem is that those who employ it must remain reticent about the benefits that the legal recognition of polyamorous marriage may produce. In this chapter, I formulate an atypical constitutional argument for polyamorous marriage, drawing inspiration from John Stuart Mill’s well-known idea of experiments of living, rooted in the benefits of unconventional beliefs and practices. I try to explain why polyamory can be a superior marital arrangement for some people under some circumstances. Such marital experiments also may assist polyamorists in becoming better human beings.

Résumé :
This chapter accounts for a distinctive kind of thought, born in and through European dance since the mid-1990s, which has thoroughly transformed choreography and performance by reinventing performed relations between the body, movement, and time under the theme of “problems.” The practice of this thought is rooted in the problematization of specific concerns within contemporary theater dance, such as the body-movement bind with respect to expression and form, improvisation and processuality, or spectatorship. Most important, its forte lies in introducing a method of creation by way of problem-posing, which merits philosophical attention. Choreographing problems involves composing ruptures between movement, the body and duration in performance such that they engender a shock upon sensibility, one that inhibits recognition. Thus problems “force” thinking as an exercise of the limits of sensibility that can be accounted for not by representation, but by the principle of expression that Gilles Deleuze develops from Spinoza’s philosophy.
