Résumé :
This paper presents a method developed to predict the flight-time employed by a drone to complete a planned path adopting a machine-learning-based approach. A generic path is cut in properly designed corner-shaped standard sub-paths and the flight-time needed to travel along a standard sub-path is predicted employing a properly trained neural network. The final flight-time over the complete path is computed summing the partial results related to the standard sub-paths. Real drone flight-tests were performed in order to realize an adequate database needed to train the adopted neural network as a classifier, employing the Bayesian regularization backpropagation algorithm as training function. For the network, the relative angle between two sides of a corner and the wind condition are the inputs, while the flight-time over the corner is the output parameter. Then, generic paths were designed and performed to test the method. The total flight-time as resulting from the drone telemetry was compared with the flight-time predicted by the developed method based on machine learning techniques. At the end of the paper, the proposed method was demonstrated as effective in predicting possible collisions among drones flying intersecting paths, as a possible application to support the development of unmanned traffic management procedures.

Résumé :
In recent years, machine learning (ML) tools have gained tremendous momentum and received wide-spread attention in different segments of modern-day life. As part of digital transformation, the power system industry is one of the pioneers in adopting such attractive and efficient tools for various applications. Apparently, a nonthreatening, but slow-burning issue of the electric power systems is the low-frequency oscillations (LFO), which, if not dealt with appropriately and on time, could result in complete network failure. This paper addresses the role of a prominent ML family member, particle swarm optimization (PSO) tuned adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) for real-time enhancement of LFO damping in electric power system networks. It adopts and models two power system networks where in the first network, the synchronous machine is equipped with only a power system stabilizer (PSS), and in the other, the PSS of the synchronous machine is coordinated with the unified power flow controller (UPFC), a second-generation flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) device. Then, it develops the proposed ML approach to enhance LFO damping for both adopted networks based on the customary practices of statistical judgment. The performance measuring metrics of power system stability, including the minimum damping ratio (MDR), eigenvalue, and time-domain simulation, were used to analyze the developed approach. Moreover, the paper presents a comparative analysis and discussion with the referenced works’ achieved results to conclude the proposed PSO-ANFIS technique’s ability to enhance power system stability in real-time by damping out the unwanted LFO.

We suggest that the inclusion of prediction can assist in the design of proactive rather than reactive computational performance partners. We summarize the significant role prediction plays in human musical decisions, and the only modest use of prediction in interactive music systems to date. After describing how we are working toward employing predictive processes in our own metacreation software we reflect on future extensions to these approaches.

Résumé :
The concern for workers’ safety in construction industry is reflected in many studies focusing on static safety risk identification and assessment. However, studies on real-time safety risk assessment aimed at reducing uncertainty and supporting quick response are rare. A method for real-time safety risk assessment (RTSRA) to implement a dynamic evaluation of worker safety states on construction site has been proposed in this paper. The method provides construction managers who are in charge of safety with more abundant information to reduce the uncertainty of the site. A quantitative calculation formula, integrating the influence of static and dynamic hazards and that of safety supervisors, is established to link the safety risk of workers with the locations of on-site assets. By employing the hidden Markov model (HMM), the RTSRA provides a mechanism for processing location data provided by the real-time location system (RTLS) and analyzing the probability distributions of different states in terms of false positives and negatives. Simulation analysis demonstrated the logic of the proposed method and how it works. Application case shows that the proposed RTSRA is both feasible and effective in managing construction project safety concerns.

Résumé :
Adaptive modulation received significant attention for underwater acoustic (UA) communication systems with the aim of increasing the system efficiency. It is challenging to attain a high data rate in UA communication, as UA channels vary fast, along with the environmental factors. For a time-varying UA channel, a self-adaptive system is an attractive option, which can choose the best method according to the channel condition to guarantee the continuous connectivity and high performance constantly. A real-time orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based adaptive UA communication system is presented in this paper, employing the National Instruments (NI) LabVIEW software and NI CompactDAQ device. In this paper, the received SNR is considered as a performance metric to select the transmission parameters, which are sent back to the transmitter for data transmission. In this research, a UA OFDM communication system is developed, employing adaptive modulation schemes for a nonstationary UA environment which allows to select subcarriers, modulation size, and allocate power adaptively to enhance the reliability of communication, guarantee continuous connectivity, and boost data rate. The recent UA communication experiments carried out in the Canning River, Western Australia, verify the performance of the proposed adaptive UA OFDM system, and the experimental results confirm the superiority of the proposed adaptive scheme.

Résumé :
The aim of the present study was the internal validation of a DNA quantification method employing Ouantifiler® Humań DNA Ouantification Kit from Applied Biosystems, used for the quantification of human total DNA, coupled with the 7500 Real-Time PCR System and the HID Real-Time PCR Analysis Software v1.1, performed at the Biology Department of the Central Forensic Laboratory of the Police. The selection of parameters relevant to the laboratory’s routine casework was madę based on the ENFSI DNA Working Group recommendations included in the document Recommended Minimum Criteria for the Validation of Various Aspects of the DNA Profiling Process. The assessment regarded: sensitivity, linearity, rangę covered by the method and precision, including intralaboratory repeatability and reproducibility. Moreover, an attempt was madę to determine whether continuation of genetic analyses is rational if the 7500 Real-Time system reads are negative, i.e. no nuclear DNA is detected, while the internal positive control (IPC) results are correct. Based on conducted validation expeńments, it was found that the extent to which the validated method met the predetermined acceptance criteria is satisfactory, taking into account the specificity of the tests conducted in our laboratory. However, any negative indications of 7500 Real-Time PCR system, suggesting no presence of nuclear DNA along with correct results obtained for the IPC, should be interpreted very carefully. Apparently, it is not rational to discontinue further analyses of such samples due to the availability of very sensitive new DNA amplification kits which often allow obtaining a fuli DNA profile. To sum up, the validation of the DNA quantification method employing the Ouantifiler® Human DNA Ouantification Kit coupled with the 7500 Real-Time PCR System and the HID Real-Time PCR Analysis Software V1.1 was successful, therefore the method could be implemented and routinely used for the quantification of human total DNA in biological samples subject to forensic analyses conducted at the Biology Department of the Central Forensic Laboratory of the Police.

Résumé :
Photonic time-stretch (PTS) technology enables revolutionary technical breakthroughs in ultrafast electronic and optical systems. By means of employing large chromatic dispersion to map the spectrum of an ultrashort optical pulse into a stretched time-domain waveform (namely, using the dispersive Fourier transformation), PTS overcomes the fundamental speed limitations of conventional techniques. The chromatic dispersion utilized in PTS can be implemented using multiple optical prism arrays, which have the particular advantages of low loss in the extended spectrum outside of the specific telecommunication band, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness. In this article, we propose and demonstrate the PTS technology established for a pair of prisms, which works as a data acquisition approach in ultrafast digitizing, imaging, and measurement regimes.

Résumé :
Given the dramatic fluctuations in aggregate housing prices, this paper attempts to examine whether the implicit prices of different housing attributes are “stable.” Theoretically, this paper provides perhaps the first dynamic, general equilibrium model in which housing attributes’ implicit prices fluctuate. Empirically, this paper models the time paths of different implicit prices as auto-regressive processes by employing a hedonic pricing model on a large set of housing transaction data over a relatively long period of time. An endogenous structural break test is then performed. Except for a few attributes, structural breaks are not detected. Directions for future research are discussed.

Résumé :
Audio fading is performed in order to smoothly modify over time the level of an audio signal. In particular, the fade-in audio effect designates a gradually increase in the audio volume, starting from silence. In practice, audio fading is mostly carried out within audio editors i.e. in off-line mode by employing various transcendental functions to enforce the fade profile. Taking into account the increasing demand for interactive media services requiring real-time audio processing, the present approach advances an effective method of constructing the audio fade-in shape with a view to real-time computing. The paper encompasses plain and straightforward implementations in pure JavaScript, prepared precisely to validate the method of audio volume processing proposed here.

Résumé :
General Game Playing is an examination of AI agents that are designed without any explicit knowledge of a particular game. Instead, they are required to play a variety of games that they have never seen before by merely reading the description of the rules at runtime, without any intervention from a human being. Previous successful agents have concentrated their efforts on turn-based games, employing either generic heuristics or the Monte Carlo/UCT simulation technique. Real-time games have dominated the market in recent years, and as a result, agents that have more reflexibility have emerged as an important area of research. In this paper, the author evaluateswhether or not it is possible to implement the already-existing algorithms into a real-time playing GGP agent, and we present a potential algorithm structure that, on the basis of this evaluation, could be able to solve the challenge.

Résumé :
A Robot vision system was designed using a silicon retina, which has been developed to mimick the parallel circuit structure of the vertebrate retina. The silicon retina used here is an analog CMOS very large-scale integrated circuit, which executes Laplacian-Gaussian like filtering on the image in real time. The processing is robust to change of illumination condition. Analog circuit modules were designed to detect the contour from the output image of the silicon retina and to binarize the output image. The images processed by the silicon retina as well as those by the analog circuit modules are received by the DOS/V-compatible mother-board with NTSC signal, which enables higher level processings using digital image processing techniques. This novel robot vision system can achieve real time and robust processings in natural illumination condition with a compact hardware and a low power consumption.

Résumé :
The use of modern multibody simulation techniques enables the description of complex products, such as mobile machinery, with a high level of detail while still solving the equations of motion in real time. Using the appropriate modelling and implementation techniques, the accuracy of real-time simulation can be improved considerably. Conventionally, in multibody system dynamics, equations of motion are implemented using the full matrices approach that does not consider the sparsity feature of matrices. With this implementation approach, numerical efficiency decreases when sparsity increases. In this study, a numerical procedure based on semi-recursive and augmented Lagrangian methods for real-time dynamic simulation is introduced. To enhance computing efficiency, an equation of motion is implemented by employing the sparse matrix technique.

Résumé :
Abstract A single-station real-time earthquake detector has been developed which operates in the frequency domain. Frequency domain operation is possible because the method of calculation of the discrete Fourier transform and the data format have been adapted to suit the architecture of the microprocessor used. A test period of 10 days resulted in a detection reliability of greater than 95 per cent, with a false detection rate of less than 10 per cent (241 earthquakes total sample). The spectral detector outperforms time domain detectors in two respects. It is much more likely to identify the more distant, emergent earthquakes, and those recorded with a low signal-to-noise ratio. The algorithm operates on a Motorola MC6809 microprocessor and uses less than a quarter of the available time at a 50-Hz sampling frequency.

Résumé :
While web applications continue to employ traditional client-server model, most of the current applications demand real time bi-directional communication. In such setups, data exchanges between both the parties (client and server) are very frequent. Thus, performance of the network is subject to various factors decided by the choice of data exchange mechanism. This shows that the choice of data exchange mechanism is vital to performance of a web-application employing it. This paper compares various data exchange mechanisms with respect to factors affecting real time web applications. While the absolute values of benchmarking may vary with the systems, the relative difference between them can be used as a reference for selecting a mechanism for an application. Hence, this paper can be used as a reference to choose appropriate data exchange mechanism for the concerned application.
