Résumé :
Venous thromboembolism is one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality in modern societies. The entirety of events involved in venous thrombus formation and resolution remains to be elucidated. Temporal relation between the initial cellular insult, thrombus formation and resolution is critical for instituting a prompt treatment. This paper analyses the current basic knowledge and the events involved in venous remodelling after an episode of venous thrombosis.

Résumé :
Due to Brexit, the UK has been involved in a continuous political debate between Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister, and Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the opposition. This paper compares and analyses the modality used in a corpus consisting of their political speeches until Brexit day. Modal verbs are used to express ability, possibility, willingness, certainty, obligation and necessity. Politicians’ choice of certain words can be a useful tool to affect voters’ decisions and modality is a resource which reinforces that influence. The findings show remarkable similarities between both politicians and reveal that possibility is the most frequent meaning of the modal verbs used in the corpus.

Résumé :
AbstractWith the advent in the near future of radio telescopes such as LOFAR and the SKA, a new window on the high-redshift Universe will be opened. In particular, it will be possible, for the first time, to observe the 21-cm signal from the diffuse IGM prior to its complete re-ionization and thus probe the ‘dark ages’. I discuss the theoretical modelling of the re-ionization process and its observability through the 21-cm signal and the CMB anisotropies.

Résumé :
In Dynamic Software Product Lines (DSPLs) product configuration occurs at runtime. Modelling variability and configuring the product in DSPLs should consider the context and non-functional requirements (NFRs) satisfaction. ConG4DaS (Contextual Goal models For Dynamic Software product lines) is a Requirements Engineering (RE) approach for DSPL which supports (i) modelling of variability with goals, NFRs, contexts and the relationship be-tween them; and (ii) offers a product configuration based on contexts, NFRs and their priority and interactions. In this paper, we present a survey evaluation of ConG4DaS with RE and DSPL researchers in regard to the perceived usefulness. In the survey, both RE and DSPL researchers perceived ConG4DaS as useful for modelling and configuring DSPLs. However, the RE group gave more positive answers than the DSPL group.

Résumé :
The choice between substance ontology and process ontology has been haunting our thinking since, at least, Ancient Greek philosophy. The assumption seems that things are the way they are and that one has to put work into changing them. Constancy or substance, in this view, is primary and change (or process) secondary. In translation studies, this plays out in the source text as the stable starting point that has to be transformed into a target text. Based on Peirce’s process semiotics and other process thinkers, I inverse the above argument, arguing that change or process is primary and constancy or substance secondary. Because the universe is subject to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, it is a process taking form rather than a form changing. Any text is a process that has been constrained materially to be relatively stable, but the stability is not original; it is the effect of semiotic work, translation. My interest is in the semiotic work done to constrain the semiotic process into some form of stability and how one can get to know or understand these constraints. Part of this paper explores some of the implications of process thinking for translation studies. However, this reversal of ground and figure also challenges the modeling of translation. If translation is a process, how do we model it in a static medium such as print? Therefore, I explore the affordances that new computational technology offers for translating static models into dynamic ones.

Résumé :
This paper explores connections between Radical Empiricism (RE), a philosophic attitude developed by William James at the beginning of the 20th century, and Empirical Modelling (EM), an approach to computer-based modelling that has been developed by the author and his collaborators over a number of years. It focuses in particular on how both RE and EM promote a perspective on the nature of knowing that is radically different from that typically invoked in contemporary approaches to knowledge representation in computing. This is illustrated in detail with reference to the modelling of several scenarios of lift use. Some potential implications for knowledge management are briefly reviewed.

Résumé :
Although mechanical stimulation is considered a promising approach to accelerate implant integration, our understanding of load-driven bone formation and resorption around implants is still limited. This lack of knowledge may delay the development of effective loading protocols to prevent implant loosening, especially in osteoporosis. In healthy bone, formation and resorption are mechanoregulated processes. In the intricate context of peri-implant bone regeneration, it is not clear whether bone (re)modelling can still be load-driven. Here, we investigated the mechanical control of peri-implant bone (re)modelling with a well-controlled mechanobiological experiment. We applied cyclic mechanical loading after implant insertion in tail vertebrae of oestrogen depleted mice and we monitored peri-implant bone response by in vivo micro-CT. Experimental data were combined with micro-finite element simulations to estimate local tissue strains in (re)modelling locations. We demonstrated that a substantial increase in bone mass around the implant could be obtained by loading the entire bone. This augmentation could be attributed to a large reduction in bone resorption rather than to an increase in bone formation. We also showed that following implantation, mechanical regulation of bone (re)modelling was transiently lost. Our findings should help to clarify the role of mechanical stimulation on the maintenance of peri-implant bone mass.

Résumé :
A neural network modelling approach has been developed to estimate the disinfectant dose adjustments required during water re-chlorination in storage tanks. The approach is based on representative operational and water quality historical data which intrinsically characterize the operators' use of know-how in their routine tasks. The development of the model requires the elimination of the historical cases in which re-chlorination results were inadequate. The results obtained for the model demonstrate that neural networks are capable of satisfactorily identifying the knowledge patterns contained in data with regard to the re-chlorination process for both winter and summer conditions. The practical use of such a model may assist operators in adjusting re-chlorination doses and may favour chlorine economization and the improvement of the water quality in the distribution system. Key words: drinking water, neural networks, distribution systems, chlorination, modelling, water quality.

Résumé :
AbstractAims“Athlete’s heart” is a cardiac adaptation to long-term intensive training. The aims of this study were to show the prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy in teenagers who participate in sports, to define the different types of cardiac re-modelling, and to differentiate between physiological and pathological hypertrophy.MethodEchocardiographic measurements were obtained by M-mode, two dimensional, and Doppler techniques of participants from sports and control groups.ResultsThe echocardiographic examinations included 100 healthy teenagers taking part in dynamic sports such as football and basketball and 100 healthy teenagers taking part in static sports such as karate and judo. The control group (n=100) included healthy, sedentary teenagers. Sports participants had significantly higher left ventricular mass when compared with the control group, (p<0.001). In the dynamic sports group, 29% of the respondents had left ventricular mass above the 95th percentile, whereas 71% had left ventricular mass below the 95th percentile (p<0.001). The cardiac re-modelling was eccentric (79.4 versus 20.6%, p<0.001). In the group of static sports participants, 37% had left ventricular mass above the 95th percentile, whereas 63% had left ventricular mass below the 95th percentile (z score 0.74±0.82, p<0.001). The prevalence of concentric and eccentric types of re-modelling was equally manifested (54.05 versus 45.95%, p>0.05). Respondents from both groups had E/A ratios (transmitral flow velocity ratio)>1, preserved diastolic function, and statistically they did not differ from the control group.ConclusionEchocardiographic parameters show that physiological hypertrophy and cardiac re-modelling are present in teenagers who play sports. Unexpectedly, the prevalence of concentric and eccentric types of re-modelling is equally possible in the group of static sports participants.

Complex systems are used, studied and instantiated in science, with what consequences? To be clear and systematic in response it is necessary to distinguish the consequences, (i) for science, of science using and studying complex systems, (ii) for philosophy of science, of science using and studying complex systems, (iii) for philosophy of science, of philosophy of science modelling science as a complex system. Each of these is explored in turn, especially (iii). While (iii) has been least studied, it will be shown how modelling science as a complex process may change our conception of science and thereby query what a philosophy of science adequate to this complexity might look like.

Résumé :
THE RE‐PROFILING, RE‐SHAPING OR re‐modelling of sheltered housing has become a topical issue. At Eastleigh, we first considered the problem of difficult‐to‐let sheltered accommodation and the need for upgraded support ten years ago. The focus of this article is on the conversion of three conventional Category 2 schemes built in the mid‐1960s.
