Texte intégralThis PhD titled “The effect of race and selective laser trabeculoplasty on the aqueous humor dynamics in patients with glaucoma” is the result of two prospective studies. The first study compared the baseline aqueous humor dynamics between 32 white-Caucasian and 37 African descent subjects with treatment-naïve ocular hypertension (OHT) or primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured using a pneumatonometer; morning aqueous humor flow rate was measured by fluorophotometry and trabecular outflow facility by electronic Schiøtz tonography. Uveoscleral outflow was calculated using Goldmann's equation with assumed episcleral venous pressure of 8, 9, 10, and 11 mmHg. Differences among groups were analyzed with parametric and nonparametric tests and the relationship between aqueous dynamics parameters were evaluated with linear regression analyses. No differences in aqueous humor dynamics between black African and white Caucasian patients were found. However, black patients were found to have significantly thinner corneas that could have been masking potential differences in outflow facility and IOP measurements between the racial groups. A group of these patients were treated with selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) to reduce their IOP. The second study investigated the effect of SLT on the aqueous humor dynamics in 18 eyes. A 21% reduction in IOP with a 55% increase in trabecular outflow facility was observed 3 months after laser treatment. No differences in aqueous humor production were found. Thus, our results showed that SLT reduces the IOP by increasing the trabecular outflow facility.

Texte intégralPart-White Multiracial adults undergo a unique racial identity development process within a racially stratified society. Theorists suggest that different ways of self-designating either improve or impede healthy psychological outcomes for Multiracial people, but virtually no theoretical rationale or empirical studies account for the internal mechanisms underlying self-designations and mental health outcomes. People of Color and White racial identity theories were used to investigate racial dynamics implicit in the identity development and self-designations of Multiracial individuals. The current study examined the relationships between racial self-designations, internalized racial identity, and well-being in part-White Multiracial adults. Part-White (Asian/White or Black/White) Multiracial adults (N = 169) completed a measure of frequency of use of five multiracial self-designations, People of Color and White Racial Identity Attitudes Scales to assess their internal race-related processes (i.e., statuses), and the Brief Symptom Inventory 18 (Derogatis, 2001) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1979) to assess healthy and unhealthy psychological outcomes. Multivariate Multiple Regression Analyses were conducted to examine the relationships among racial self-designation and well-being, racial self-designation and internalized racial identity, and internalized racial identity and well-being. Results specific to racial self-designations were (a) greater disorientation about racial dynamics predicted more frequent identification as White and Multiracial, (b) withdrawal from Whiteness increased monoracial minority self-designation and decreased self-designation as Multiracial (c) more complex appraisals of Whiteness predicted more frequent use of most self-designation choices, and (d) an intellectualized view of Whiteness reduced use of the monoracial minority designations and increased identifying with no racial groups at all. Self-designation use was not related to psychological outcomes, but racial identity statuses were. Overall, the results of the study supported examining racial self-designation, internalized racial identity and well-being in a single study. As expected, internalized racial identity was predictive of self-designations and well-being. This study provides initial support for adding conceptual and empirical complexity to discussions about the mental health and wellbeing of Multiracial people. Methodological limitations and implications for future theory, research, and practice are discussed

Texte intégralThis dissertation presents the study of a off-road competition vehicle ride and the double rate suspensions elastokinematic behavior using the multibody software MSC-ADAMS. The vehicle multibody model includes the rear and front suspensions, the steering system, the tires and the sprung mass. The suspensions elastokinematic analysis defined geometric configurations that allowed long jounce and rebound travel of wheel, without undesirable project parameters variations. In the modal analysis of the vehicle multibody model, the springs rates that results in natural frequencies values similar to passenger cars for the first suspension stage and, for the second stage, similar to competition vehicles, were defined. The ride analysis during the simulation of the vehicle running on a rough track showed that the force elements defined on the modal analysis resulted in a good ride quality, rarely found in competition vehicles.

Texte intégralThis thesis work revolves around the analysis of inter-individual factors affecting performance and their connection with environmental factors within the context of triathlon, particularly focusing on the triathlon formats featured in the Olympic Games. Performances in triathlon races, where triathletes interact with each other, as seen in the short-distance triathlon formats (super-sprint, sprint, and standard), depend on the optimal utilization of individual capacities and the adaptation of effort to the race dynamics. The discipline of short-distance triathlon has evolved both in terms of regulations and technology over the past two decades. Therefore, the research objective was to understand race dynamics in these short formats based on the profiles of the participating triathletes and to quantify the performance levels of each athlete while taking into account the competition, which is the most consistent parameter across different races. The initial studies (1 and 2) focused on the innovative format of mixed relays introduced in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This ultra-short format involves race dynamics centered around maintaining position and high proximity among athletes. We observed the strategies adopted by teams and identified the profiles of triathletes corresponding to each relay.Subsequently, our research shifted towards the standard format (studies 3 and 4), also featured in the Olympics and compulsory for relay athletes. In these studies, we aimed to estimate the level of each athlete using points exchange system based on the probabilities of victory and defeat between each pair of athletes. This system allowed us to assess the density of competition in a race and the target performance of an athlete. Furthermore, by connecting it to course typology, we were able to observe race group dynamics and estimate the probability of a successful breakaway after the swimming and cycling segments

The rand has since the mid-1980s maintained a long swing of decline that reversed in 2002 for a brief while; resuming the swing shortly thereafter. In contrast to these fairly predictable fluctuations, the rand’s short run movements are increasingly volatile and seemingly unpredictable. Anchored in the asset approach to exchange rate determination, this study examines the two issues of the long run and short run exchange rate dynamics of the rand.
