Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanaswami (1906-2001) popularly known as R. K. Narayan, an award winning novelist, essayist and storywriter is generally considered one of the greatest Indians writing in English. He shares this honour with Mulk Raj Anand and Raja Rao. D. S. Maini has observed in this regard: “Mulk Raj Anand, Raja Rao, and R. K. Narayan- brought the Indian novel to the point of ripeness”. But R. K. Narayan enjoys a place of rare distinction among these great writers too and it is partly because of the rare setting of his novels, his close association with the traditional Indian society, his simple language, his humour and irony, and his characterization, which is so varied and colourful. Many critics have praised R. K. Narayan for his literariness and for his aestheticism. V. Y. Kantak has observed, “…when we come to weigh Indian writing of fiction in English to date, Narayan with his penny whistle seems to have wrought more than most others with their highly pretentious and obstreperous brass” (21). R. K. Narayan has fourteen novels to his credit alongwith a large number of short stories. Narayan’s The Guide (1958) won him great fame and was widely acknowledged as a masterpiece by the world’s literary community. It also won him the much-coveted Sahitya Akademi Award in 1960.

Microneedles are small-scale devices that may be used for access to interstitial fluid and/or capillary blood for transdermal monitoring of chemicals [1]. In this presentation, the integration of several types of electrochemical sensors with hollow microneedles will be considered. For example, carbon fiber electrodes have been integrated with digital micromirror device-produced microneedles; ascorbic acid and hydrogen peroxide were detected with these devices [2]. Carbon paste electrodes have also been integrated with digital micromirror device-produced microneedles; electrodes made from rhodium-dispersed carbon paste were used for hydrogen peroxide sensing [3]. In addition, lactate oxidase-modified rhodium-dispersed carbon paste electrodes were demonstrated for lactate sensing, including in the presence of interferents such as ascorbic acid, uric acid, and acetaminophen. A multiplexed microneedle array containing digital micromirror device-produced microneedles was subsequently used for amperometric detection of glucose, lactate, and pH; detection of these analytes in complex media was shown [4]. More recently, digital micromirror device-produced hollow microneedles were modified with a working sensor, which was prepared with graphene ink and 4 (3-Butyl-1-imidazolio)-1-butanesulfonate) ionic liquid. Direct oxidation of fentanyl via square-wave voltammetry was shown; a detection limit of 27.8 μM was demonstrated using this approach [5]. Two photon polymerization has also been used to create hollow microneedles for biosensing; a porous carbon electrode created using interference lithography was used for potassium ion sensing in the presence of interfering sodium ions [6]. In another study, nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond coatings were deposited on Ti –6Al–4V alloy microneedles using microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition; dopamine and uric acid were electrochemically detected in an in vitro study [7]. These studies indicate that microneedles may have utility for minimally invasive detection of analytes in a real time manner. Benefits and disadvantages of the microneedle-based sensing approach as well as efforts needed for clinical translation of microneedle-based sensing technology will be considered. Healthcare education and practice has significantly been impacted by COVID-19. This includes the challenge on pedagogical approaches that highlight the potential of technology to facilitate innovative new approaches in response to social distancing, lockdowns, remote learning and improving the patient experience and positive outcomes. Many of these innovative approaches are not fundamentally new but are now seeing relevance beyond early adopters to mainstream implementation. This presentation draws upon collaborations with educational researchers and technologists that have explored the integration of technology into healthcare education and practice. COVID-19 Adversity to Opportunity Many healthcare programmes required reenvisaging teaching and learning approaches in response to COVID-19 restrictions. This had a particular impact on the development of interpersonal and practical knowledge and skills essential for healthcare graduates. The limited access to on-campus learning provided an opportunity for both institutional and individual evaluation of pedagogical practices. The affordances of traditional, didactic, and “hands-on” skills were compared with those that could be facilitated using online asynchronous/ synchronous strategies. A particular concern was the development of the interpersonal and practical skills required in safe and effective healthcare practice. Alongside easing of restrictions, these skills were adapted using online demonstrations within the limits of socially distanced “bubbles”, telehealth and limited clinical placements. Reconsideration of summative assessments was also required- with the introduction online synchronous and asynchronous verbal assessments, and asynchronous submissions of practical skills online (Cochrane et al., 2021; Narayan et al., 2021). In the prospect of COVID-19 restrictions continuing to lift, it is envisioned that most of the reenvisaged pedagogical approaches to healthcare education will persist, without compromising student critical thinking or practical skills. Interprofessional Collaboration This presentation will highlight the importance of interprofessional collaboration in healthcare curriculum design using a Design-Based-Research methodology (Chen et al., 2020; Kartoğlu et al., 2020) to facilitate authentic learning and develop self-determined learning capabilities for healthcare professionals. DBR- Design Principles in response to COVID Transferable design principles will be introduced for enhancing healthcare education that will improve practice in a COVID19 world, particularly drawing from eight healthcare projects including: STUDIO602 – enhancing clinical practice with mobile technologies (Cochrane & Sinfield, 2021), developing a virtual reality handover experience for healthcare students (Cochrane et al., 2018), using immersive reality to develop critical thinking in clinical health education (Stretton et al., 2018), enhancing first responder clinical simulation education using immersive reality and biometrics (Cochrane et al., 2020), designing authentic learning for graduate entry nursing students (Macdiarmid et al., 2021), designing public and environmental health education (Kersey et al., 2018), Biomedical engineering (Lam et al., 2021), and physiology education (Fabris et al., 2019). R. K. Narayan’s The Guide, considered a masterpiece, was made into an equally successful film. Guide was made in two versions — an English version in collaboration with Pearl S. Buck and directed by Ted Danielewski to introduce Dev Anand to Western audiences and the Hindi version directed by Dev Anand’s younger brother, Vijay Anand. Despite being warned by all and sundry not to touch the project and his brother’s strong reluctance to direct, Anand persisted with the film, which went on to fetch awards in almost all categories and remains a landmark in Indian Cinema. R. K. Narayan was most unhappy with the final film as he felt it deviated too much from his novel, particularly in Anand’s change of setting from Malgudi to Udaipur and the film’s ending, and disowned the film. The author’s disappointment with the cinematic translation of his text is understandable. But it overlooks the difference between fiction and film, the main issue being that the novel is a verbal medium whereas film is primarily a visual genre. What is the process through which the filmmaker translates the verbal into the visual mode? How did Vijay Anand translate Narayan’s complex fictional narrative that weaves in modernization, social reform, and development with spiritual quest in a cinematic code? How did he weave in the emboxed narrative of the unhappy dancer Rosie into the frame story about the Hindu concepts of the power of faith and renunciation? How did he handle descriptions of characters: “complexion not white, but dusky, which made her only half visible, as if you saw her through a film of tender coconut juice” and mood: “‘I’m prepared to spend the whole night here,’ she said. ‘He will, of course, be glad to be left alone. Here at least we have silence and darkness, welcome things, and something to wait for out of that darkness’”; interior monologue; the passage of time; the switch from the frame to the emboxed tale and so on? Through examining The Guide, this paper will engage with the handling of narrative in fiction and film.

It is known that the zero forcing number of a graph is an upper bound for the maximum nullity of the graph (see [AIM Minimum Rank - Special Graphs Work Group (F. Barioli, W. Barrett, S. Butler, S. Cioab$\breve{\text{a}}$, D. Cvetkovi$\acute{\text{c}}$, S. Fallat, C. Godsil, W. Haemers, L. Hogben, R. Mikkelson, S. Narayan, O. Pryporova, I. Sciriha, W. So, D. Stevanovi$\acute{\text{c}}$, H. van der Holst, K. Vander Meulen, and A. Wangsness). Linear Algebra Appl., 428(7):1628--1648, 2008]). In this paper, we search for characteristics of a graph that guarantee the maximum nullity of the graph and the zero forcing number of the graph are the same by studying a variety of graph parameters that give lower bounds on the maximum nullity of a graph. Inparticular, we introduce a new graph parameter which acts as a lower bound for the maximum nullity of the graph. As a result, we show that the Aztec Diamond graph's maximum nullity and zero forcing number are the same. Other graph parameters that are considered are a Colin de Verdiére type parameter and vertex connectivity. We also use matrices, such as a divisor matrix of a graph and an equitable partition of the adjacency matrix of a graph, to establish a lower bound for the nullity of the graph's adjacency matrix.

IntroductionMyelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibody mediated disease is an autoimmune demyelinating disorder which can resemble multiple sclerosis (MS).1 2 Thus, this condition can be misdiagnosed and treated as MS.3 We present the clinical trajectory of two cases initially diagnosed as MS, treated with Alemtuzumab followed by clinical and radiological deterioration. Both were subsequently found to have anti MOG antibody in their serum.MethodsThis is a retrospective case study based on a medical record search of neuroimmunology clinics in two teaching hospitals in Victoria. We searched for patients treated with Alemtuzumab who subsequently tested positive for MOG antibody.ResultsWe found two young women who fulfilled the eligibility criteria. One patient presented with dizziness and vertigo, the other with unilateral optic neuritis. Both had supratentorial MRI lesions and were both diagnosed as having MS. Both patients experienced multiple relapses while on treatment for MS. Hence, they were commenced on Alemtuzumab therapy. Unexpectedly, both patients experienced a decline in their clinical status with worsening of expanded disability status scale (EDSS) and an increasing lesion load on MRI brain. Their serum anti MOG antibodies were then found to be positive. Subsequently, patients were treated with rituximab and plasma exchange with a favorable response.ConclusionsThese two cases demonstrate that Alemtuzumab is ineffective and in fact can worsen cases of anti-MOG antibody associated encephalomyelitis. ABSTRACT Previous studies revealed that the heart suffers significant injury during experimental Lyme and relapsing fever borreliosis when the immune response is impaired (D. Cadavid, Y. Bai, E. Hodzic, K. Narayan, S. W. Barthold, and A. R. Pachner, Lab. Investig. 84:1439-1450, 2004; D. Cadavid, T. O'Neill, H. Schaefer, and A. R. Pachner, Lab. Investig. 80:1043-1054, 2000; and D. Cadavid, D. D. Thomas, R. Crawley, and A. G. Barbour, J. Exp. Med. 179:631-642, 1994). To investigate cardiac injury in borrelia carditis, we used antibody-deficient mice persistently infected with isogenic serotypes of the relapsing fever agent Borrelia turicatae. We studied infection in hearts 1 to 2 months after inoculation by TaqMan reverse transcription-PCR and immunohistochemistry (IHC) and inflammation by hematoxylin and eosin and trichrome staining, IHC, and in situ hybridization (ISH). We studied apoptosis by terminal transferase-mediated DNA nick end labeling assay and measured expression of apoptotic molecules by RNase protection assay, immunofluorescence, and immunoblot. All antibody-deficient mice, but none of the immunocompetent controls, developed persistent infection of the heart. Antibody-deficient mice infected with serotype 2 had more severe cardiac infection and injury than serotype 1-infected mice. The injury was more severe around the base of the heart and pericardium, corresponding to sites of marked infiltration by activated macrophages and upregulation of interleukin-6 (IL-6). Infected hearts showed evidence of apoptosis of macrophages and cardiomyocytes as well as significant upregulation of caspases, most notably caspase-1. We conclude that persistent infection with relapsing fever borrelias causes significant loss of cardiomyocytes associated with prominent infiltration by activated macrophages, upregulation of IL-6, induction of caspase-1, and apoptosis.

Mulk Raj Anand is very well- known as an Indian novelist, distinguished writer, reformer, art critic, editor, journalist, a short story writer and political activist. He opened a new section of writers of fiction along with Raja Rao and R. K. Narayan and produced a great deal of English literature and his mastery in the realistic and sympathetic portrayal of the exploited class of Indian society marks his genius as a socially committed novelist. That‟s why he is not only known as India‟s Charles dickens but also considered the messiah of the have-nots, unloved, down trodden and unwanted. The exploitation of the downtrodden in Indian society made him focus his attention on their miserable and pathetic condition and formed the major theme of his works. His writings reflect his urgent social concern, preoccupations and the social impulse and made the reader to be immediately aware of the exploitation faced by the downtrodden through the heart throbbing description of their wretched state. Painted with the colors of social realism Mulk Raj Anand‟s two novels Untouchable and Coolie reflect the hard core reality of the Indian society of early decades of twentieth century.. Written with a purpose both these novels condemn the modern capitalistic Indian society and feudal system for the shameless and tragic exploitation of the poor and underdog as there is nothing but a true, real and bitter reflection of the society in both the novels dealing with a similar central theme of social exploitation, the exploitation of the downtrodden and the under-privileged because of the curse of untouchability, poverty, hunger, child labour, social governance, social set up of society, customs, religious belief, prejudices and the suffering of the Indian masses by the forces of capitalism, industrialism and colonialism. The present paper shows the true colours of social realism in Untouchable and Coolie; the epic like novels of M. K. Anand to strike a cord in the hearts of the consciententious Indians through a beautiful and real to life portrayal of the exploited masses of Indian society.

The history of the short story is as old as human civilization. The parable, fable and folk tale are its different forms and all of them, share their origin and pattern with poetry. After the maturity of the novel as a genuine genre, the descendent craft of the short story writing sprang up from a variety of soil late in the nintenth century, previously, the short story was assigned an inferior statues, mostly recognized as a little piece of literature that an author/writer tossed of between major productions. At present, the prolific writers in this field have considered the modern short story as a complex form, making in depth but lacks in length.With the advent of literary art, the yearning for tales has acquired new dimensions. The range and scope of the stories has become extensive, wide and universal. Now the writer of short stories endeavours to explore various manifestations of life which primarily include inter-personal relationship,man’s association with nature,the learning experiences of life and other social issues. The human relationship continues to be the nucleus of any literary work. In a country like India,anyone, who wishes to be a writer,has to shoulder moral responsibility. The author through his work provides an outlet to his innermost unexpressed feelings and frees his mind from these emotions. Sometimes he brings to the notice of his readers his observations of social and cultural setup,thus performing the role of a social reformer. As a genuine artist the author needs to shoulder the responsibility to interpret life in all its shades and colours for the common man. The prominent Indian practitioner’s off short story as a literary form included K S Venkataramani, K Nagarajan, Raja Rao, Rabindranath Tagore, Mulk Raj Anand, Ruskin Bond, R K Narayan, etc.

This study aims to determine the development of scientific publications, mapping the scope and theme of publications related to obesity in early childhood published in Scopus-indexed journals from 2013-2023. This study uses the Scopus database which is retrieved using the publish or perish application. From the results of data extraction, 200 articles were obtained with keywords in the article titled Childhood Obesity. This research uses keyword co-occurrence analysis to identify and explore the main fields and topics that appear in publications. The application used to analyze the data is Vos Viewer. Based on the results of the analysis, 7 clusters were obtained. This study provides information to researchers, especially researchers in Indonesia about publication trends related to Childhood obesity. It is hoped that this research can be a foundation for further research, scientific development, and implementation in the fields of early childhood, health, and physical education. Abstract Background: Early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is challenging partly because most patients also have cirrhosis. Furthermore, patients with cirrhosis are at high risk of developing HCC. Loss of function of the transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) pathway is associated with HCC. The goal of this study was to determine if a reduction in TGF-β receptors (TGFBR1, TGFBR2) was able to reliably and reproducibly predict HCC in cirrhotic tissue. Methods: We performed quantitative immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis of biopsy tissue from patients with cirrhosis with or without HCC using 3 separate sets of samples. We developed an automated image analysis pipeline to quantify IHC of TGFBR1 and TGFRB2 in liver biopsies. Using logistic regression modeling, we evaluated the predictive power of staining intensity of TGFBR1, TGFBR2, or the combination in differentiating HCC from cirrhosis. Results: We found a consistently significant reduction in TGFBR2 in HCC (p < 0.02) among independent patient cohorts from 3 separate institutions. With the data, we developed an artificial intelligence-based image analysis pipeline that confirmed the significant reduction in TGFBR2 staining intensity in HCC compared to cirrhotic tissue (p < 0.002). Unfortunately, logistic regression modeling of the quantitative data showed that there is not a simple threshold of TGFBR2 staining intensity that is diagnostic of HCC. Instead, in 84% of samples with HCC, HCC was associated with a relative regional reduction in TGFBR2 compared to tumor-adjacent cirrhotic tissue. Conclusions: The qualitative and quantitative analyses indicate that evaluating biopsy samples for a reduction in TGFBR2 abundance relative to the surrounding cirrhotic tissue could be an early indicator of the development of HCC in high-risk groups undergoing surveillance for HCC. Furthermore, an automated image analysis pipeline for quantitative IHC of TGFBR staining could improve the reliability of image analysis across institutions participating in clinical trials. Father's involvement is something that influences the child's problematic behavior. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether father involvement can influence children's problematic behavior. This study used the systematic literature review (SLR) method by referring to 10 valid articles published in the last 10 years with the publication years between 2013 - 2023. The finding of the literature shows that there is a significant impact of father involvement on the children's problematic behavior. The more the father is involved in the children's development, the lower the level of children's problematic behavior is. The image of a father as a mentor and motivator for early childhood can still be explored in depth. Because of the limitations of this study, this study suggests that future research can further discuss the impact of the father’s involvement in the children's problematic behavior in a specific cultural aspect by considering cross-cultural factors. This is intended to conclude the relationship between the father’s interactive situations with the impact of the father’s involvement in the children's problematic behavior. R. K. Narayan's work has been faulted for its sidestepping of the brutal realities of colonial rule. Yet Narayan stages, in the dreaminess of his fictionalized township of Malgudi, the unwriting or undermining of the logics of language that subtend colonial rule. The author has fashioned a way to write about India that displays the vacuity of the colonial model of governance and, through his tales of failed authorship, points to something other. Emerging in his comic episodes and in his baffled protagonists is a recognition of the importance of keeping things unsettled, in suspension, or visible only in their negation. Narayan, this essay argues through a series of questions that underscore the uncertainty in his world, imagines passivity as an interruption of the progressive, purposive, and productive time that defines modernity.

ABSTRACT In a previous report we demonstrated that three injections of an rt-deleted noninfectious genome of the simian-human immunodeficiency virus SHIVKU2 induced protection against AIDS in macaques (D. K. Singh, Z. Liu, D. Sheffer, G. A. Mackay, M. Smith, S. Dhillon, R. Hegde, F. Jia, I. Adany, and O. Narayan, J. Virol 79:3419-3428, 2005). To make this DNA safer, we deleted two more genes, the integrase gene and vif, along with the 3′ long terminal repeat. We also replaced the gag, pro, and nef genes (SIVmac239 origin) with those of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1 strain SF2. The resultant construct, designated Δ4SHIVKU2 DNA, was used in this study to evaluate gene expression and immunogenicity in BALB/c mice. DNA-transfected human embryonic kidney epithelial cells (HEK 293) produced all of the major viral proteins and released p24 in the supernatant for 12 days. Inoculation of the vaccine DNA into the gastrocnemius muscles resulted in intense mononuclear cell infiltration at the inoculated sites and the production of viral p24 in myocytes, in infiltrating mononuclear cells, and in cells in the spleen and draining lymph nodes between 3 and 10 days postinoculation. Expression of p24 in the muscle cells peaked at day 7 and became undetectable after day 12. The same 12-day period of expression of p24 was observed in mice that were given a second injection 4 weeks after the first. Evaluation of immune responses in BALB/c mice revealed that the DNA induced enzyme-linked immunospot and antigen-specific proliferative cell-mediated immunity responses. The responses were stronger in mice that were coinjected with a second plasmid expressing granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor. Since new waves of viral antigen production could be induced with each boosting injection of the vaccine DNA, this DNA could be a safe and efficient agent to induce long-term protection against HIV.

R. K. Narayan was among the first Indian English writers to be taken note of the West. With a clever use of just the right amount of humour, Narayan was able to transform his seemingly ordinary characters into larger-than-lite individuals, who brought a change in the existing social and political structures of Malgudi, a microcosmic representation of our nation. And, with this, he inspired us to think, dream and write differently to delive into a magical reality for better than the one we know. His works are often considered synonymous with the innocence of childhood, and even today the social undertones of his writing echo the complexities of the Indian society.

R. K. Narayan (1906-2001) is considered one of the founding fathers of Indian writing in English, along with Raja Rao, Mulk Raj Anand and G.V. Desani, and is best known for creating the imaginary town of Malgudi. Another important feature of his fiction is what both critics and readers call a gentle or light-hearted humour. Humour has often been used to both subvert and survive various forms of political oppression (see Ştefănescu, Tripathi and Chettri). In Narayan, Malgudi, the centre of the action, is both a colonial and a post-colonial town, created and recreated over years and even decades. Since Malgudi can be considered a metonymy of India (see Mukherjee), Narayan’s use of humour as a subversive device, together with his skilful examination of the cultural and colonial context, can be perceived as a poignant criticism of the British colonial system and what it entailed, specifically the suppression of what constitutes ‘Indianness’, the Indian way of life and cultural values. On the other hand, the light-hearted and subversive irony allows Narayan to offer a more profound insight into the human nature as such, while juxtaposing a colonial and post-colonial context.

R.K. Narayan conforms to his times and during the period he wrote, there was a radical change in the status of women. Moreover, he maintains an objective detachment from his themes and characters. However detached he is from his characters, it is possible to draw out a conception that the portrayal of women characters takes a definite shape through his novels. As we read his novels, we can trace a gradual transition of his women characters from silence to speech. His pre-independence novels like Swami and Friends, The English Teacher, Dark Room have women who are submissive and docile even though they nurture the desire for liberation. But, R. K. Narayan was a genius to picturise the ordinary middle-class milieu. Narayan takes a different attitude in portraying his post-independence heroines. The middle-class is considered the citadel of tradition but has shown its heroines courageously negotiating their way out from stereotyped notions about women and their roles. His women who are presented as votaries of emancipation educate themselves, long for economic independence and do not hesitate in leaving their parents or dumping their husbands and lovers in their search for individual identity and desired happiness.

If inherently intermittent renewable energy technologies are to offer a practical alternative to conventional heat engines, it is critically important that efficient, cost-effective and sustainable energy storage solutions are developed to decouple supply and demand profiles. A promising strategy is to pair the competitive energy densities of batteries with the superior cycling lifetimes and power densities of supercapacitors,[1] employing an appropriate maximum power point tracking (MPPT) system to optimise energy exchange between these complementary devices.[2] Mixed-valence manganese(III/IV) oxides (MnOz, where z ranges between 1.5 and 2.0) have emerged as foremost candidates for the electroactive material in supercapacitor cathodes due to their low toxicity, minimal cost,[3] ready availability (manganese appears at an average concentration of ca. 1,000 ppm in the Earth’s crust[4]), wide electrochemical stability window (ca. 1.0 V in aqueous electrolytes[5]), and high maximum theoretical specific capacitance (ca. 1,370 F g-1, based on the reduction of Mn4+ ions by a single electron[6]). Charge storage in MnOz is predominantly mediated by the pseudocapacitive intercalation of cations from the surrounding electrolyte in each discharge phase, followed by the release of these guest ions during charging. Of the various crystallographic phases of MnOz, cryptomelane (α-MnOz) and birnessite (δ-MnOz) polymorphs are deemed two of the most promising candidates for storage applications because they possess characteristically wide channels for intercalation/de-intercalation:[8,9] α-MnOz consists of ca. 4.6 Å diameter one-dimensional tunnels enclosed between corner-sharing MnO6 octahedra, whereas δ-MnOz comprises two-dimensional layers of MnO6 octahedra separated by ca. 7.0 Å. Herein, a scalable, low-cost synthesis procedure is discussed that enables the production of highly pseudocapacitive birnessite and cryptomelane electrodes with tuneable material characteristics, including particle morphology, crystallographic structure, average Mn oxidation state, and the level of pre-intercalation by Na+ and K+ ions.[10] In addition to comparing the electrochemical properties of these NaxKyMnOz products in aqueous conditions, their application within an asymmetric supercapacitor is showcased: by optimising the relative masses of a NaxKyMnOz cathode and activated carbon anode in a 100 cm2 aqueous full-cell configuration, discharge capacitances in the range 10-30 F g-1 can be achieved over a voltage span of 1.8 V at current densities as high as 10 A g-1, with Coulombic efficiency exceeding 80% up to ca. 20 A g-1. With these competitive performance characteristics, the developed NaxKyMnOz materials are a promising option for high-power supercapacitor cathodes, helping to pave the way towards more efficient and sustainable energy storage. This essay depicts R. K. Narayan as a writer intricately and intensely involved with a changing India by looking at his treatment of sexuality in his fiction. It reveals a writer who is able to represent sexual proclivities in Malgudi subtly as well as comprehensively. The essay argues that in Narayan’s fiction. women increasingly display their dissatisfaction with prevailing sexual norms and attempt to negotiate a new role for themselves where they can respond to the sexual overtures of men they like in their own terms without giving up their quest for self-fulfillment. Orr the other hand, it argues that Narayan sees male sexuality as insidious, disruptive and uncontrollable. In tact, the essay shows that the plots of quite a few of Narayan’s novels depict male sexuality as a fundamentally unsettling phenomenon and suggests that many of his narratives are constructed to reveal it as constituting a threat to the status quo.

R.K. Narayan is considered one of the most eminent Indian authors in the English language. Narayan mostly focuses on portraying middle-class folks from Malgudi, a fictional location he created in South India. His writings feature a diverse array of male and female characters. Within each of his novels, there exists a female character that holds a significant role in the narrative. Rosie, in The Guide, is one such female character. She embodies a contemporary woman who is well-educated and driven, who aspires to achieve financial independence based on her own preferences and abilities, despite facing significant sacrifices. Raju's mother and Velan's sister are among the other female characters depicted in the story. Raju's mother embodies the conservative and orthodox ladies who adhere to tradition and culture. She is a conscientious spouse and an affectionate parent. She provides guidance to both Raju and Rosie regarding moral principles and ethical conduct. However, if her advice is ignored, she departs from her residence and accompanies her brother to reside with him. Velan's sister has a little yet significant part in the narrative, as her presence contributes to portraying Raju as a saintly figure. This technical note summarizes a technical comparison of common testing procedures, as well as reviewed of the UN Test N` 5, for the assessment of the self-heating properties of cargoes and materials that has shown a clear trend on maritime fire and explosions events, as well as considering of external factors that can combine self-heating and emit flammable gases to conclude in an unlikely event affecting the security of crews and ships. A high understanding of the external factors effect on the cargo materials certainly will help the application of spontaneous reactions management actions (SRMA) on board of ships during the cargo sea passage. The intended comparison is based on laboratory, industry and field observations and data, whereas the among the external factors considered are, moisture content, stockpile procedure and aging, air velocities and moderate pressures internal and externally to the cargo material. The comparison results have shown that the self-heating and the flammable gas emissions has a common pattern when reacting with any oxygen available source, regardless the reactive material chemical composition. ABSTRACTBackground: Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov2). The COVID-19 pandemic severely limits the community environment, one of which is the limitation of dental and oral health services. The wide spread of the COVID-19 virus has caused many people to feel afraid to have their teeth checked in the midst of a pandemic, thus affecting the motivation and interest of the public to visit the dentist's practice. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between motivation and public interest in visiting the dentist during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sungai Miai Village. Methods: This study used an analytic observational research with a cross sectional design. The subject of this research is the Sungai Miai Village Community aged 20-55 years using a sampling technique by means of cluster random sampling totaling 113 people. Results: The results of the analysis using the Gamma test to determine the relationship between motivation and interest in visiting the dentist during the COVID-19 pandemic obtained a significant value of 0.009 (<0.05) with a correlation value of -0.52 Conclusion: There is a relationship between motivation to visit the practice dentists and interest in visiting a dentist practice with a moderate correlation strength. ABSTRACT Islamic banking is undoubtedly faced with several potential financing risks, with the three largest financing contracts (Mudharaba, Musharaka, and Murabaha) that reduce the financial performance of Islamic banks. The potential risk is strengthened if the stability of national economic growth is contracted. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the impact of Mudharaba, Musharaka, and Murabaha financing on Financing Risk moderated by the business cycle and the relationship between Financing Risk and the Financial Performance of Islamic Commercial Banks. The sample of this study was 12 Islamic Commercial Banks in Indonesia during the period 2017-2021. The Data were then analyzed using the technique of Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA). Researchers found that Musharaka financing has a significant positive effect on Financing Risk, Mudharaba and Murabaha Financing has an insignificant effect on Financing Risk, and Financing Risk has a significant negative effect on Financial Performance. The Business Cycle does not moderate the Financing of Mudharaba, Musharakah, and Murabaha on Financing Risk. The results can encourage the Islamic Commercial Bank to evaluate the distribution strategy of Musharaka financing, optimize the distribution of Mudharaba and Murabaha financing, and prepare financing strategies that do not depend on macroeconomic conditions. Potensi risiko tersebut menguat jika stabilitas pertumbuhan ekonomi nasional juga terganggu atau mengalami kontraksi. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini hendak mengkaji pengaruh Pembiayaan Mudharaba, Musharaka, dan Murabaha terhadap Risiko Pembayaran dengan dimoderasi oleh Siklus Bisnis, dan sekaligus menguji hubungan antara Risiko Pembayaran dan Kinerja Keuangan Bank Syariah. Sampel penelitian ini adalah 12 Islamic Commercial Bank di Indonesia selama periode 2017-2021. Data tersebut kemudian dianalisis dengan menggunakan teknik Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA). Peneliti menemukan bahwa Pembiayaan Musharaka berpengaruh positif signifikan terhadap Risiko Pembiayaan, Pembiayaan Mudharaba dan Murabaha tidak berpengaruh signifikan terhadap Risiko Pembiayaan, dan Risiko Pembiayaan berpengaruh negatif signifikan terhadap Kinerja Keuangan. Adapun Siklus Bisnis tidak dapat memoderasi Pembiayaan Mudharaba, Musharaka, dan Murabaha terhadap Risiko Pembiayaan. Hasil penelitian ini dapat menjadi evaluasi bagi Islamic Commercial Bank agar dapat mengevaluasi strategi penyaluran pembiayaan Musharaka, mengoptimalkan penyaluran pembiayaan Mudharaba dan Murabaha, dan mempersiapkan strategi pembiayaan yang tidak bergantung pada kondisi makro ekonomi. The ability to recognize the concept of early numbers in early childhood is very important to develop so that children are ready to take part in learning mathematics at a higher level. This study aims to determine the effect of mathematics learning approaches and self-regulation to recognize the concept of early numbers ability in kindergarten. The study used an experimental method with a treatment design by level 2x2. The sample used was 32 children. Score data, ability to recognize number concepts, analyzed and interpreted. The results showed that: (1) The Realistic Mathematics Education approach is better than the Open Ended Approach in improving the ability to recognize children's number concepts; (2) There is an interaction effect between mathematics learning approaches and Self-Regulation to recognize the concept of early numbers ability; (3) The Realistic Mathematics Education approach is more suitable for children with high self-regulation, (4) The Open Ended approach is more suitable for children with low self-regulation. Subsequent experiments are expected to find mathematics learning approaches for children whose self-regulation is low on recognizing the concept of early numbers ability. R. K. Narayan, one of the greatest Indian writers and a major contributor to English fiction, has presented the lives of women around and depicted women characters with varied facets in his fiction. Most of his works reflect the predicament of women and the social reality in which they try to assimilate themselves at times. He is a writer who could portray women depicting their psychological urges. Narayan’s works depict the role of women in family and society and show a gradual transformation in these women characters and evolve them to their best at the societal spectrum. He portrayed his women characters with all shades creating a signature effect with regard to characterization of women in society.This paper examines the various female characters – modern as well as traditional and the differences in their thought patterns, habits, ambitions, beliefs, conduct, aspirations and their way of looking at life. My research focuses on few observations on the portrayal and depiction of women in the selected works of R. K. Narayan with a view of exploring the female characters and different aspects of human nature and human life. This paper also proves the fact that apart from providing aesthetic pleasure, these selected literary texts depict the various facades of women in our everyday lives. It also portrays a paradigm shift that the female characters experience by rendering a message to the world around. This paper gives few insights into life and the predicaments which as human beings we falter on. This paper also suggests and recommends the readers to explore such texts and characters to develop an aesthetic ability and a sense of appreciation for the works of R. K. Narayan.

Phosphate coatings have been a popular choice for the treatment of steels and other ferrous alloys for a number of decades. In the most common embodiment of the process, phosphate coatings are produced by a conversion reaction between the steel surface and an acidic conversion bath. The resulting coatings are composed of phosphate crystals which act as a physical barrier between the environment and the underlying metal, protecting it from corrosion and wear [1]. Despite being a cheap and well-affirmed technology, conversion phosphating has recently been scrutinized due to its high environmental impact. In fact, one of the main byproducts of the process is a sludge containing phosphates and heavy metals from the deposition bath. A potential solution to the environmental burden carried by the conversion process is represented by the electrolytic deposition method. In this case, the increase in interfacial pH necessary for phosphate precipitation is obtained by applying a cathodic polarization to the samples to coat in an electrolytic setup. As a consequence of the potential shift, substrate dissolution is prevented and so is sludge formation [2]. In this work, we demonstrate how the choice of current density influences the resulting properties of zinc phosphate coatings obtained by electrolytic deposition on low carbon steel substrates. Aside from the deposition rate, the applied current density is found to be a determinant factor in the morphology of the coatings as it can be seen in Figure 1. This article is mainly focused on the protagonist Savitri of the novel: The Dark Room by R.K. Narayan and how she is alienated from herself, from society and from the world and about her quest for marital identity. Savitri also goes through the crisis of discontent to the quest for happiness. Savitri of the ancient legend is a paragon of virtue and courage who confronts even Death to save her husband is finally victorious. Ironically, unlike the legendary Savitri, Narayan’s Savitri chooses to leave home, husband and children once she comes to know of her husband’s infidelity. Contrary to the legend, Savitri is just an ordinary, amiable, housewife. She abandons her gambler and drunkard husband and her family. But her independence proves detrimental to Savitri’s familial peace. Narayan skillfully portrays her every action and in his ironic subtle fashion puts across the artificiality behind it. ABSTRACT: The Covid-19 pandemic that has occurred in the world has harmed economies since 2020, especially Indonesia. Therefore, it is very important to study the impact of this pandemic on the stability of Islamic banking in Indonesia and examine potential signs of post-pandemic recovery. This study examines the stability of Islamic banking in Indonesia. Stability is measured using ROA and Z-score. The data in this study are panel data for Islamic Commercial Banks (BUS) and Islamic Business Units (UUS). The data used is quarterly data for 2016-2020. This study uses the Generalized Method of Moment (GMM). The results of this study are ROA for Assets, CAR, FDR, and Covid-19 do not affect profits. However, NPF and BOPO have a negative effect. Whereas on the Z-score for Assets, CAR FDR has a positive effect. NPF and BOPO harm the stability of Islamic banking, except for Covid-19. Lower efficiency and problematic financing reduce the stability of Islamic banking. In addition, the results of our analysis, based on profitability and financial stability during the quarterly period, Islamic banking was able to survive during the Covid-19 pandemic. This research implies that even though some variables do not significantly affect profits, Islamic banks must still pay attention to other variables, such as ROA, owned assets, CAR, FDR, and Covid-19 which are likely to have a large negative impact on the long term. Apart from that, Islamic banks must also maintain profits and stability to survive and compete with conventional banking amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Data dalam penelitian ini adalah data panel untuk Bank Umum Syariah (BUS) dan Unit Usaha Syariah (UUS). Data yang digunakan adalah data triwulanan tahun 2016-2020. Penelitian ini menggunakan Generalized Method of Moment (GMM). Hasil penelitian ini adalah ROA untuk Aset, CAR, FDR, dan Covid-19 tidak berpengaruh terhadap keuntungan perbankan syariah. Namun NPF dan BOPO berpengaruh negatif. Sedangkan pada Z-score untuk Aset, CAR FDR berpengaruh positif. NPF dan BOPO berpengaruh negatif terhadap stabilitas perbankan syariah, kecuali Covid-19. Efisiensi yang lebih rendah dan pembiayaan bermasalah mengurangi stabilitas perbankan syariah. Selain itu, hasil analisis, berdasarkan profitabilitas dan stabilitas keuangan selama periode triwulanan, perbankan syariah mampu bertahan selama pandemi. Hasilnya menunjukkan implikasi bahwa meskipun beberapa variabel tidak berpengaruh signifikan terhadap keuntungan, namun Bank Syariah harus tetap memperhatikan variabel lain, seperti ROA, Aset yang dimiliki, CAR, FDR, dan Covid-19 yang kemungkinan akan terjadi dampak negatif yang besar dalam jangka panjang. Selain itu, Bank Syariah juga harus mampu menjaga keuntungan dan stabilitas agar mampu bertahan dan bersaing dengan perbankan konvensional di tengah pandemi. K. Narayan was one of the pioneers of Indo Anglian fiction along with Mulk Raj Anand and Raja Rao. Their heydays were marked by complicated social issues such as India’s struggle for Independence and the more stressful period afterwards. Among the three, many consider R. K. Narayan as the most realistic in fiction considering Indian settings. The Financial Expert is again considered as Narayan’s masterpiece by many. It’s a well-constructed novel in five parts. The story is focused on three main aspects relating to the central character of Margayya. They are; Margayya’s determination to acquire wealth, his love for his own son Balu and his relationship with his brother and sister in law. It is at times mesmerizing to analyze Narayan’s use of humor and irony in crafting the fate of a normal middle class individual.

The Pervasive Presence in Asia of ascetic practitioners—whether sedate, shorn, and robed monks or fierce, ash-smeared, naked yogis—has long fascinated Western observers and certainly nourished stereotypes of a mysterious, otherworldly, and impenetrable East. In India especially, the ascetic's figure has fueled the speculations of scholars, artists, tourists, and religious seekers for centuries (Oman 1905; Narayan 1988). Most depictions of Indian culture, whether indigenous or foreign, evocative or analytic, include portraits or analyses of world-renouncers.1 And yet with the notable exception of numerous fictional explorations (e.g., Bhattacharya 1978; Markandaya 1963; R K. Narayan 1980), the renouncer remains a figure whose existence comments on the human predicament but whose human thoughts and feelings remain opaque.

K. Narayan is considered to be one of the outstanding writers of Indian writing in English whose contributions to novel writing and story writing is noteworthy. The present work depicts the aspects of self expression in his autobiographical novel ‘The English Teacher’. The novel consists of a story of a happily living couple Krishna and Susila who ultimately met unfortunate days when the female partner Susila leaves the world in an early age. Krishna finds himself amidst grief and pain after his beloved wife is dead and he tries contacting her soul. The complete study of the novel brings out the result that the story is of no one else but Narayan’s own.

Slurry electrodes have been proposed as a means to enhance the scalability of hybrid redox flow battery (RFB) chemistries for better usability in utility scale energy storage applications1–3. In conventional hybrid RFB’s, scalability is limited due the spatial constraints of the flow cell and the metal deposited by the negative half-reaction on charge1. By using a slurry electrode, the solid metal can be deposited onto electrically conductive particles dispersed in the electrolyte instead of on the stationary electrode within the flow cell. In this way, hybrid RFB chemistries can achieve the same scalability as more commonly studied true RFB chemistries, such as all-vanadium. Due to the high abundance, low cost, and low toxicity of iron electrolytes, the all-iron RFB chemistry is of particular interest for use with a slurry electrode2,4. The usefulness of the slurry electrode depends on the current distribution of the plating reaction. To successfully decouple the storage and power capacities of the RFB and thus enhance its scalability5, the faradaic current of the plating reaction must occur predominantly on the mobile slurry particles, as opposed to on the stationary current collector1. This current distribution is dependent on a variety of factors, such as the applied overpotential, the electrical conductivity of the slurry, the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte, the kinetics of the reaction, and the rate of ionic mass transport to reaction sites. Ionic mass transport in electrolytes containing slurry electrodes may differ from ionic transport in neat electrolyte in interesting and important ways. Due to the volume fraction of the electrolyte occupied by solid particles, the effective concentration of the ionic species may be lower than in neat electrolyte. Further, the solid particle volume fraction hinders ionic diffusion by introducing diffusion path tortuosity. This effect is more severe in higher slurry particle loadings. In this work, the effect of varying dispersed solid particle loading on ionic diffusivity is investigated via voltammetry using a rotating disk electrode. The diffusivities of ionic iron species are measured as a function of the volume fraction of solids dispersed in the electrolyte.
