Résumé :
Taking a long view of mycological history, this essay considers how studies of fungal life have modeled fugitive, cryptic, and queer forms of belonging that open the body and the body politic to modes of collectivity that trouble the equation of ecology with holistic closure. Turning to Arthur Machen's The Hill of Dreams, this essay shows how the geographies of desire and belonging created through fungal intimacies make it impossible to speak of either the self-contained individual or ecology in the singular. Open and plural, selves and worlds proliferate, contaminate, and interpenetrate through the infectious touch of fungal relations.

Résumé :
Abstract How does loss tear a hole in the world and produce a collective remaking of a new social order in which grief-work is not contained singularly but is a process done in feminist, queer, and Black and Brown ensemble? Interested in how we deliberately incorporate loss into collective grief-work, this article pulls from feminist and queer theorists of color who move across social and psychical constructions of sorrow. Highlighting contemporary art by minoritarian artists such as Eva Margarita Reyes and Pedro Lopez, who embrace loss, the author argues that grief-work is a communal labor we undergo together in acts of intimate meditation, suffering, spillage, and transformation. Happening in feminist and queer ensemble, grief-work is a deliberate decision to assemble in nonlinear feelings and attachments; it is an intention to work together to defend not only the dead but also the living, tending to immaterial energies that shift the fecund terrain of both life and death.

Résumé :
In The Maltese Falcon (1929/1930), U.S. hard-boiled author Dashiell Hammett used common colloquial terms (queer and fairy) and specialized slang terms (gunsel, the gooseberry lay) to include homosexual characters at a time when pulp magazines and mainstream publishers frowned on diverse sexualities. Hammett subversively introduced these terms in a resolvably ambiguous fashion, relying on readers to trigger underlying homosexual interpretations. Instances of queer and fairy were attenuated in early versions (1933, 1946) but in more recent versions (1968, 1974, 1992, and 2011) were generally preserved (marica) or even intensified (maricón). In many cases, the Spanish translators misinterpreted the gooseberry lay, which has no sexual connotations at all, thinking it meant something homosexual. In all cases, the term gunsel, which does have a homosexual meaning, was stripped of all male same-sex significance and was cast into slang terms for gunman, thug or killer.

Résumé :
Drawing upon queer theory and Said’s notion of the counterpoint, the article analyses the launch episode of a reality television series produced by the South African NGO loveLife, which focused on a young, self-identified lesbian woman in Soweto. We offer a counter example to discourses of the powerless victimhood of Black, gender and sexually non-normative individuals in South African townships. We unveil contrapuntally the pushes and pulls between the voice of the authoritative facilitator, aligned with loveLife’s HIV-prevention and youth leadership development methodology, and that of the young woman herself, who volunteered for the intervention, focusing on their disagreement on how best to ‘accommodate’ the prevailing social norms of contemporary South Africa. We also discuss the counterpoint between us – a discourse analyst observing the effects of particular articulations on South African society related to loveLife’s social aims, and the producer of the episode, charged with the protection of the NGO’s brand identity. We conclude that norms governing gender and sexuality in a rapidly evolving society such as South Africa’s are best understood as presenting analysis with dilemmas and contradictions, and that contrapuntal reading is a valuable tool for bringing these tensions under scrutiny without succumbing to the urge to resolve them.

The aim of this research was to explore body image and well-being within the pup community for gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (GBTQ) men in Canada. Data was collected through cellphilming methods (production of short films by participants using their cellphones) and workshops from seventeen self-identifying GBTQ pups. Transcripts were analyzed through discourse analysis. Three discursive considerations were noted: 1) (re)defining sexual bodies, 2) wearing the pup hood, and 3) rejecting gender and gender norms. Implications for nutritional counselors working in the areas of body image are discussed.

Résumé :
We present a detailed description of the predatory behavior of the beetleCanthon virensMannerheim, 1829, on the leafcutter antAttasp. We observed 51 acts of predation, which were also recorded on film and subjected to behavioral analysis.Canthon virensexhibited 28 behaviors while predating uponAttasp. queens. Adult beetles search for queens while flying in a zigzag pattern, 15 to 20 cm above the ground. After catching a queen, the predator stands on its back and starts cutting the queen cervix. Once the prey is decapitated, the predator rolls it until an insurmountable obstacle is reached. The distance from the site of predation to the obstacle can vary widely and is unpredictable. The beetle rolling the queen also buries it in a very peculiar way: first, it digs a small hole and pulls the queen inside, while another beetle is attached to the prey. The burial process takes many hours (up to 12) and may depend on the hardness of the soil and the presence of obstacles. In general, one or two beetles are found in a chamber with the queen after it is buried. They make the brood balls, which serve as food for the offspring. This study contributes to the knowledge of the predatory behavior ofCanthon virens, a predator poorly studied in Brazil and widespread in the country.

Résumé :
The propagation of the palm Syagrus romanzoffiano is done sexually with seeds, making the process of obtaining new plants slow and difficult, especially on large scales. In addition, seed germination is slow, uneven and susceptible to degradation and loss of vigor because of embryo deterioration, even under laboratory conditions. As a result of the lack of information on efficient depulping methods for queen palm fruits, the present study aimed to establish a depulping methodology that is less aggressive to embryos, maintaining emergence quality. This experiment was carried out in Goiânia, Brazil, using fruits from eight stock plants submitted to three pre-depulping treatments (control, fermentation and drying) and two depulping methods (industrial depulping and concrete-mixer with the addition of gravel). After the different pre-sowing processes, the fresh and dry pyrenes mass, remaining fibers adhered to the pyrene and seedling emergence were evaluated. The pulper removed an average of 45% more pyrene pulp than the concrete mixer. However, these methodologies did not result in differences in the emergence of plants, which was affected only by the pre-depulping treatment, with superiority in the use of fresh fruits. Thus, the pulper was more efficient for the removal of pulp and pulp fibers than the concrete mixer. The depulping method did not significantly affect the pyrenes mass. Higher seedlings emergence values were observed for the fresh fruits that were pulped and sown immediately. Fermentation and partial pulp dehydration exert a negative influence on seedling emergence.

Résumé :
Abstract The article presents the results of the analysis of the cultivation of potato varieties for yield and quality data. The aim of the study was to determine the technological and consumer characteristics of various varieties of potato grown in the Ryazan region. During the experiments were used potato varieties of domestic and foreign selection, which were approved for zoning in the Ryazan region. Potato was cultivated at the experimental agrotechnology station of Ryazan State Agrotechnological University in 2019-2020. As a result of research, it was revealed that only the varieties “Gala”, “Queen Anna” and “Kolobok” are classified as type C, which is suitable for cooking most culinary dishes, and accordingly they are universal. According to the quality indicators “taste and smell” and “darkening of the pulp”, the tubers of the “Gala”, “Queen Anna”, “Red Scarlett” and “Kolobok” varieties showed themselves worthily. According to the number of tubers on the bush, varieties “Queen Anna” and “Kolobok” also performed best. The highest average mass of tubers was given by the varieties “Rodrigo” and “Kolobok”.

Résumé :
Focusing on unlikely field sites and life’s flotsam, such as a cramped apartment, an urban alley, a pile of clothes, dust motes, face masks, stale air, and trash, this work limns the pivotal value of the visceral, the fleeting, the contingent, the small, and the infra-ordinary to possibly nurture a particular “worlding” of queer anthropology in the early twenty-first century. Taking a motley crew of inspirational productions and encounters, including affective experimental texts, trashy makeover television shows, everyday encounters, professional intrigues, and banal boredom, this essay pulls out from diary pages of seemingly incoherent scribblings some vital moments of world-(un)making, living, detachments, attachments, carings, refusals, and disaffections. This essay offers an embodied sense of queerness as a refuge, a refusal, a placeless nowhere-ishness, a hopeful elsewhere-ishness—all constituting a queerness that is tacitly embedded in the uncertainty and precarity of the times.

Résumé :
This chapter focuses on the cyclical evolution of queer vampires in the public imagination from the eighteenth century to the twenty first. Commencing with Polidori’s The Vampyre (1819), the author considers homoeroticism and friendship married together in the framework of the vampire tale. The author then traces the trajectory of queer vampire tales through the nineteenth century, where queer vampires of all genders were most often considered monstrous. As the chapter moves into the twentieth century, the author considers two classic depictions of vampiric lesbianism in film: Dracula’s Daughter (1936) and Rebecca (1940). These two films are rich with coded queer language in order to get by the Hollywood censors. From Hollywood, the chapter considers much more openly queer global vampire films like the British bodice ripper The Vampire Lovers (1970) and the Spanish and West German collaboration on the overtly BDSM themed Vampyros Lesbos (1971). In the final portion of the chapter, the author examines contemporary queer vampire pulp fiction produced by Bold Strokes Books, a queer and trans independent press in the U.S. alongside the TV series What We Do In The Shadows (2019-). The vampire has thus gone from friend to fiend to friend again.

Résumé :
Chapter 1 begins with Michael Warner’s question, ‘What will we do with our shame?’, and proceeds to consider, and to critique, the revisiting of shame in much recent queer theory – a revisiting that generally seeks to mine that affect for its positive political potential. The chapter assesses the uses and limitations of ‘queer shame’, via a consideration, first, of contemporary queer theory, and second, of the recent republication – and implied ‘recuperation’ – of the formerly shameful sub-genre of mid-century lesbian pulp fiction. Through readings of Ann Bannon’s Women in the Shadows (1959/2002) and Della Martin’s Twilight Girl (1961/2006), the chapter focuses particularly on questions concerning the (in)visibility and (un)intelligibility of gender and race, and matters of performance and ‘passing’. It shows how, in both novels, non-whiteness becomes a site of both fascination and shame, functioning indeed as both an intensifier of queer shame and a mirror of/analogy for that shame, in what might be viewed as a troubling case of shame appropriation.

Résumé :
Abstract I begin with the wish to laugh with the dead. There is something of a tradition in early modern scholarship of books that open with an expression of philosophic if necrophilic desires: to sleep with the dead, to talk with the dead.’ Hearing the laughter of the dead seems a simple concept. Early modern theatrical audiences undoubtedly laughed when Sampson threatened to cut off ‘the heads of the maids, or their maidenheads’. Surely they chortled when Flute as This be professed to have often kissed the hairy stones of Wall, given that ‘stones’ was a common pun on ‘balls’. Their wit, in Dryden’s prim phrase, ‘was not that of gentlemen’. We have little trouble hearing the echo of that laughter. Prince Hal pulls Falstaff’s pistol from its case; the pistol turns out to be a bottle of sack; twentieth century audiences howl with laughter. Cowardice and alcohol are as potent subjects for knockabout farce in 1998 as they were in 1598, when Shakespeare’s The History ofHenry IV appeared in the Stationers’ Register.

Résumé :
Abstract Richard Deming’s tale of seduction and murder during a honeymoon cruise is a fine example of post-pulp magazine fiction that uses sexual tension to hook the reader. When Deming wrote “Honeymoon Cruise” at the age of fifty-one, he was already an experienced fiction and television writer, used to depicting enough sexuality to titillate the reader or television viewer without upsetting the censors. A native of Iowa, Deming served in the army and worked briefly as a social worker and for the Red Cross before becoming a full-time writer at the age of thirty-five. He used seven pseudonyms during a career in which he progressed from writing for pulps to digest-sized mystery magazines, then paperback original novels, and finally to novelizations of the Charlie’s Angels and Starsky and Hutch television series, written under the pseudonym Max Franklin. Under his own name, he turned out novels and short stories centered on the activities of the wisecracking Manville “Manny” Moon and hard boiled police procedurals featuring Matt Rudd, as well as novelizations of The Mod Squad television series. He also penned ten novels using the pseudonym Ellery Queen (as other authors did at the time) between 1962 and 1970. In addition, he wrote nonfiction volumes on subjects as diverse as American spies, civil and criminal law, sleep, and the metric system.
