In radio interferometry, the quantization process introduces a bias in the magnitude and phase of the measured correlations which translates into errors in the measurement of source brightness and position in the sky, affecting both the system calibration and image reconstruction. In this paper, we investigate the biasing effect of quantization in the measured correlation between complex-valued inputs with a circularly symmetric Gaussian probability density function (PDF), which is the typical case for radio astronomy applications. We start by calculating the correlation between the input and quantization error and its effect on the quantized variance, first in the case of a real-valued quantizer with a zero mean Gaussian input and then in the case of a complex-valued quantizer with a circularly symmetric Gaussian input. We demonstrate that this input-error correlation is always negative for a quantizer with an odd number of levels, while for an even number of levels, this correlation is positive in the low signal level regime. In both cases, there is an optimal interval for the input signal level for which this input-error correlation is very weak and the model of additive uncorrelated quantization noise provides a very accurate approximation. We determine the conditions under which the magnitude and phase of the measured correlation have negligible bias with respect to the unquantized values: we demonstrate that the magnitude bias is negligible only if both unquantized inputs are optimally quantized (i.e. when the uncorrelated quantization error model is valid), while the phase bias is negligible when (1) at least one of the inputs is optimally quantized, or when (2) the correlation coefficient between the unquantized inputs is small. Finally, we determine the implications of these results for radio interferometry.

We consider quantized chaotic dynamics for a spiking oscillator with two periodic inputs. As the first input is applied, the oscillator generates various periodic and chaotic pulse-trains governed by a pulse position map. As the second input is added, the oscillator produces pulse positions restricted on a lattice, and the pulse position map is quantized. Then the oscillator generates a set of super-stable periodic pulse-trains (SSPTs). The oscillator has various coexisting SSPTs and generates one of them depending on the initial state condition. In order to characterize the set of SSPTs, we elucidate the number and the minimum pulse interval of the SSPTs theoretically. By presenting a simple test circuit, we then verify some typical phenomena in the laboratory environment.

This paper is concerned with the quantized identification of rational systems, where the systems’ output is quantized by a logarithmic quantizer. Under the assumption that the systems’ input is periodic, the identification procedure is categorized into two steps. The first step is to identify the noise-free output of systems based on the quantized data. The second is to identify the unknown parameter based on the input and the estimation of the noise-free output. The identification algorithm is also summarized. Asymptotic convergence of the estimators is analyzed in detail, which shows that the estimators are convergent almost everywhere. A numerical example is given to illustrate the results obtained in this paper.

The deconvolution problem has been drawing the attention of mathematicians, physicists and engineers since the early sixties. Ubiquitous in the applications, it consists in recovering the unknown input of a convolution system from noisy measurements of the output. It is a typical instance of inverse, ill-posed problem: the existence and uniqueness of the solution are not assured and even small perturbations in the data may cause large deviations in the solution. In the last fifty years, a large amount of estimation techniques have been proposed by di fferent research communities to tackle deconvolution, each technique being related to a peculiar engineering application or mathematical set. In many occurrences, the unknown input presents some known features, which can be exploited to develop ad hoc algorithms. For example, prior information about regularity and smoothness of the input function are often considered, as well as the knowledge of a probabilistic distribution on the input source: the estimation techniques arising in diff erent scenarios are strongly diverse. Less eff ort has been dedicated to the case where the input is known to be aff ected by discontinuities and switches, which is becoming an important issue in modern technologies. In fact, quantized signals, that is, piecewise constant functions that can assume only a fi nite number of values, are nowadays widespread in the applications, given the ongoing process of digitization concerning most of information and communication systems. Moreover, hybrid systems are often encountered, which are characterized by the introduction of quantized signals into physical, analog communication channels. Motivated by such consideration, this dissertation is devoted to the study of the deconvolution of continuous systems with quantized input; in particular, our attention will be focused on linear systems. Given the discrete nature of the input, we will show that the whole problem can be interpreted as a paradigmatic digital transmission problem and we will undertake an Information-theoretic approach to tackle it. The aim of this dissertation is to develop suitable deconvolution algorithms for quantized-input linear systems, which will be derived from known decoding procedures, and to test them in diff erent scenarios. Much consideration will be given to the theoretical analysis of these algorithms, whose performance will be rigorously described in mathematical terms.

AbstractConcurrent with autonomous robots, teleoperation gains importance in industrial applications. This includes human–robot cooperation during complex or harmful operations and remote intervention. A key role in teleoperation is the ability to translate operator inputs to robot movements. Therefore, providing different motion control types is a decisive aspect due to the variety of tasks to be expected. For a wide range of use-cases, a high degree of interoperability to a variety of robot systems is required. In addition, the control input should support up-to-date Human Machine Interfaces. To address the existing challenges, we present a middleware for teleoperation of industrial robots, which is adaptive regarding motion control types. Thereby the middleware relies on an open-source, robot meta-operating system and a standardized communication. Evaluation is performed within defined tasks utilizing different articulated robots, whereby performance and determinacy are quantified. AbstractIn a previous paper, we have shown that clause sets belonging to the Horn Bernays-Schönfinkel fragment over simple linear real arithmetic (HBS(SLR)) can be translated into HBS clause sets over a finite set of first-order constants. The translation preserves validity and satisfiability and it is still applicable if we extend our input with positive universally or existentially quantified verification conditions (conjectures). We call this translation a Datalog hammer. The combination of its implementation in SPASS-SPL with the Datalog reasoner VLog establishes an effective way of deciding verification conditions in the Horn fragment. We verify supervisor code for two examples: a lane change assistant in a car and an electronic control unit of a supercharged combustion engine.In this paper, we improve our Datalog hammer in several ways: we generalize it to mixed real-integer arithmetic and finite first-order sorts; we extend the class of acceptable inequalities beyond variable bounds and positively grounded inequalities; and we significantly reduce the size of the hammer output by a soft typing discipline. We call the result the sorted Datalog hammer. It not only allows us to handle more complex supervisor code and to model already considered supervisor code more concisely, but it also improves our performance on real world benchmark examples. Finally, we replace the before file-based interface between SPASS-SPL and VLog by a close coupling resulting in a single executable binary.

Heavy minerals (HMs) are minerals with a specific gravity greater than 2.9 g/cm3. They are commonly highly resistant to physical and chemical weathering, and therefore persist in sediments as lasting indicators of the (former) presence of the rocks they formed in. The presence/absence of certain HMs, their associations with other HMs, their concentration levels, and the geochemical patterns they form in maps or 3D models can be indicative of geological processes that contributed to their formation. Furthermore trace element and isotopic analyses of HMs have been used to vector to mineralisation or constrain timing of geological processes. The positive role of HMs in mineral exploration is well established in other countries, but comparatively little understood in Australia. Here we present the results of a pilot project that was designed to establish, test and assess a workflow to produce a HM map (or atlas of maps) and dataset for Australia. This would represent a critical step in the ability to detect anomalous HM patterns as it would establish the background HM characteristics (i.e., unrelated to mineralisation). Further the extremely rich dataset produced would be a valuable input into any future machine learning/big data-based prospectivity analysis. The pilot project consisted in selecting ten sites from the National Geochemical Survey of Australia (NGSA) and separating and analysing the HM contents from the 75-430 µm grain-size fraction of the top (0-10 cm depth) sediment samples. A workflow was established and tested based on the density separation of the HM-rich phase by combining a shake table and the use of dense liquids. The automated mineralogy quantification was performed on a TESCAN® Integrated Mineral Analyser (TIMA) that identified and mapped thousands of grains in a matter of minutes for each sample. The results indicated that: (1) the NGSA samples are appropriate for HM analysis; (2) over 40 HMs were effectively identified and quantified using TIMA automated quantitative mineralogy; (3) the resultant HMs’ mineralogy is consistent with the samples’ bulk geochemistry and regional geological setting; and (4) the HM makeup of the NGSA samples varied across the country, as shown by the mineral mounts and preliminary maps. Based on these observations, HM mapping of the continent using NGSA samples will likely result in coherent and interpretable geological patterns relating to bedrock lithology, metamorphic grade, degree of alteration and mineralisation. It could assist in geological investigations especially where outcrop is minimal, challenging to correctly attribute due to extensive weathering, or simply difficult to access. It is believed that a continental-scale HM atlas for Australia could assist in derisking mineral exploration and lead to investment, e.g., via tenement uptake, exploration, discovery and ultimately exploitation. As some HMs are hosts for technology critical elements such as rare earth elements, their systematic and internally consistent quantification and mapping could lead to resource discovery essential for a more sustainable, lower-carbon economy.

The overall objectives of the project were: (a) To measure and study in situ the effect of irrigation with reclaimed sewage effluents on redox processes and related chemical dynamics in soil profiles of agricultural fields. (b) To study under controlled conditions the kinetics and equilibrium states of selected processes that affect redox conditions in field soils or that are effected by them. Specifically, these include the effects on heavy metals sorption and desorption, and the effect on pesticide degradation. On the basis of the initial results from the field study, increased effort was devoted to clarifying and quantifying the effects of plants and water regime on the soil's redox potential while the study of heavy metals sorption was limited. The use of reclaimed sewage effluents as agricultural irrigation water is increasing at a significant rate. The relatively high levels of suspended and, especially, dissolved organic matter and nitrogen in effluents may affect the redox regime in field soils irrigated with them. In turn, the changes in redox regime may affect, among other parameters, the organic matter and nitrogen dynamics of the root zone and trace organic decomposition processes. Detailed data of the redox potential regime in field plots is lacking, and the detailed mechanisms of its control are obscure and not quantified. The study established the feasibility of long-term, non-disturbing monitoring of redox potential regime in field soils. This may enable to manage soil redox under conditions of continued inputs of wastewater. The importance of controlling the degree of wastewater treatment, particularly of adding ultrafiltration steps and/or tertiary treatment, may be assessed based on these and similar results. Low redox potential was measured in a field site (Site A, KibutzGivat Brenner), that has been irrigated with effluents for 30 years and was used for 15 years for continuous commercial sod production. A permanently reduced horizon (Time weighted averaged pe= 0.33±3.0) was found in this site at the 15 cm depth throughout the measurement period of 10 months. A drastic cultivation intervention, involving prolonged drying and deep plowing operations may be required to reclaim such soils. Site B, characterized by a loamy texture, irrigated with tap water for about 20 years was oxidized (Time weighted average pe=8.1±1.0) throughout the measurement period. Iron in the solid phases of the Givat Brenner soils is chemically-reduced by irrigation. Reduced Fe in these soils causes a change in reactivity toward the pesticide oxamyl, which has been determined to be both cytotoxic and genotoxic to mammalian cells. Reaction of oxamyl with reduced-Fe clay minerals dramatically decreases its cytotoxicity and genotoxicity to mammalian cells. Some other pesticides are affected in the same manner, whereas others are affected in the opposite direction (become more cyto- and genotoxic). Iron-reducing bacteria (FeRB) are abundant in the Givat Brenner soils. FeRB are capable of coupling the oxidation of small molecular weight carbon compounds (fermentation products) to the respiration of iron under anoxic conditions, such as those that occur under flooded soil conditions. FeRB from these soils utilize a variety of Fe forms, including Fe-containing clay minerals, as the sole electron acceptor. Daily cycles of the soil redox potential were discovered and documented in controlled-conditions lysimeter experiments. In the oxic range (pe=12-8) soil redox potential cycling is attributed to the effect of the daily temperature cycle on the equilibrium constant of the oxygenation reaction of H⁺ to form H₂O, and is observed under both effluent and freshwater irrigation. The presence of plants affects considerably the redox potential regime of soils. Redox potential cycling coupled to the irrigation cycles is observed when the soil becomes anoxic and the redox potential is controlled by the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox couple. This is particularly seen when plants are grown. Re-oxidation of the soil after soil drying at the end of an irrigation cycle is affected to some degree by the water quality. Surprisingly, the results suggest that under certain conditions recovery is less pronounced in the freshwater irrigated soils.
