Résumé :
Built in 1897 in Hangzhou, China, “Qiu shi Shu-yuan(求是書 院)” is a new type of Confucian academy founded in cooperation with the “Wei-xin faction(維新派)” at the time. This Confucian academy emphasized the spirit of “Shi shi qiu shi(實事求是)”, based on the parallelism of Chinese and Western studies, and further had a clear purpose of contributing to the activities of saving the country by cultivating practical talents. Chinese intellectuals, who were suffering from a national crisis at the time, were leading the establishment of various new schools or modern educational institutions to break down the chaotic situation. In that time, Qiu shi shu-yuan was not only built purely by the Chinese, but also developed into today's Zhejiang University. Thus, it is considered one of the “ideal models of modern Chinese educational institutions” in that it shows a consistent educational view and stable development in terms of operation and development.

Résumé :
The article deals with the authorship of the Confucian treatise Xiao Jing (“The Classic of Filial Piety”). Xiao Jing is one of the classical treatises that constitutes a part of the Confucian corpus Shisan Jing (“The Thirteen Classics”). This confirms the importance and high significance of this text for the traditional philosophical thought of China. The earliest mention of the title “Xiao Jing” was recorded in the work from the 3rd century BC, Lu shi chun qiu (“Spring and Autumn of Mr Liu”), which indicates the terminus ante quem non for the treatise Xiao Jing. According to some Russian scholars, the treatise Xiao Jing was compiled in the IV-II centuries BC. The Chinese scholarship acknowledges eight main versions of authorship, and therefore dating of Xiao Jing. The author stresses the importance to establish the authorship of the Xiao Jing treatise since this can be a piece of additional information for a comprehensive understanding of the philosophical heritage of the Confucian tradition of this text. After presenting an outline of the main versions of authorship of the Xiao Jing treatise, the author states that this issue can hardly be solved unambiguously. Therefore, this article can be considered as a preliminary essay for further research. The appendix offers a complete Russian translation of the Xiao Jing made by the author of the present article.

Résumé :
AbstractThe present paper aims to investigate the idea of “elevating the worthy” (shang xian尚賢) as it appears in the newly found manuscriptZhou xun周訓. This manuscript is part of the Peking University collection (Beijing daxue cang Xi-Han zhushu北京大學藏西漢竹書), presumably copied in the first half of the first centuryb.c.e. In sharp contrast to most recently discovered manuscripts promulgating “elevating the worthy,” theZhou xunintroduces the meritocratic principle to support hereditary power transfer, by positing that the right to rule should be passed on to the most able son of a ruler. I argue that this position served several purposes. First, it provided a solution to the central problem of abdication discourse, namely, the conflict between the principles of “respecting worthies” (zun xian尊賢) and “loving kin” (ai qin愛親). Second, this interpretation of “elevating the worthy” entailed a significant extension of the number of potential contenders to the throne, challenging the system of primogeniture, the very cornerstone of political order in early China. This fundamental challenge appears to be deliberate and can be interpreted as an attempt to formulate a new paradigm for the ruling house of Zhou. The complete absence of the idea of Heaven's Mandate (tian ming天命) from theZhou xuncertainly underscores its radical departure from Zhou conventional claims to power. However, I argue that, given the close association between theZhou xunand theLüshi chunqiu呂氏春秋, it is also plausible that the former's theory was created to justify the Zhou's overthrow by the Qin 秦. In any case, theZhou xunprovides us with new insights into how the idea of “elevating the worthy” was applied to politics in early China.

Résumé :
Abstract As one of the industrial centers of Western China, Xi’an is undergoing a process in which surrounding “urban villages” are incorporated into the urban area. This paper reports on the contact situation between the Xi’an dialect of Beishan Menkou “urban village” and Mandarin Chinese. Data collection started with traditional dialect survey methodology which assumes the dialect to be homogeneous and shared across village members. It requires respondents to read a standard list of Chinese characters. The assumption that the dialect is homogeneous is generally agreed upon for older generations but is doubtful for the younger generation who are exposed to modern education and modern life. We therefore stratified the survey across three generations with six informants, a male and female informants for each generation. The results show that the dialect among the two older generations was still homogeneous and shared, whereas the youngest generations showed influence of Putonghua on the dialect. This resulted in a new dialect variant “Dialect with Putonghua features”, which is recognized by urban village members as such. Female respondents generally were conceived of as speaking the New Dialect more clearly than their male counterparts. We also investigated the impact of the dialect on Putonghua and concluded that among the younger generation, a form of “Local Putonghua” developed, whereas the accented forms used by older generations are a variety of intermediate forms of this “Local Putonghua”. The paper further provides details of the changes taking place in the New Dialect in terms of tones, initials and finals, vocabulary and grammar. Words in local Putonghua were also listed.

The article gives a overview of translations of I.A. Krylov’s fables in China. The first of them appeared more than 120 years ago, but the real acquaintance of Chinese readers with his work took place in the 1950s because of the translations of Meng Hai and Wu Yan. From the late 1970s to the present, the number of translations and editions of Krylov’s fables has been constantly increasing. Now in China there are more than 300 separate editions of his selected fables and 33 complete collections. At various times, at least 64 translators worked on translations of Krylov’s fables into Chinese, and 15 of them translated all nine books of the collection of his fables (these are Wu Yan, He Shiying, Feng Jia, Gu Yu, Xin Weiai, Han Guiliang, He Maozheng, Pei Jiaqin, Qu Hong, Yue Yan, Shi Guoxiong, Ding Lu, Zhu Xiansheng, Qiu Jingjuan and Yang Jianfeng). Some translations are made in prose, but some in poetry. The article summarizes the history of translations of Krylov’s fables in China and provides information about the most important translations and translators.

Résumé :
Abstract Xi'an has a special historical position in ancient China, and it has made great achievements in water conservancy projects in all dynasties. The water network skeleton formed mainly by the ‘Eight Waters’ in the territory, along with the historical changes of Xi'an, has experienced the Lantian ape-man ‘living by the water’, the Western Zhou Fenghao ‘two capitals along the Fenghe River’, and the Qin Xianyang city ‘capital passed by Weihe river’. Developments and changes such as the ‘diversion of water to develop the capital’ in Chang'an in the Western Han Dynasty, the ‘capital be ringed by eight rivers’ in Chang'an in the Sui and Tang Dynasties, ‘reduced water’ from the end of the Tang Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, and the ‘coordinated supply’ after the founding of the People's Republic of China. After sorting out the system, it is believed that the ‘Eight Waters’ in the territory are the original driving force for the flourishing Chang'an in history. From ancient times to the present, with the development of industry, there has been a trend that human settlements and rivers are farther away. Urban water supply has shifted from groundwater sources to surface water sources. This article investigates the evolution of water conservancy projects in Xi'an from the Paleolithic Age to the present, and studies the relationship between human production and life and water resources. The changing law and development trend of the water supply structure in Xi'an urban area in modern times are analyzed. We have summarized the enlightenment left to us by the practice of water conservancy projects for thousands of years. This paper provides references for the development and planning of water resources in similar cities.

Résumé :
Introduction. In the modern educational space of each state, music education plays an essential role in the upbringing of the rising generation. The national musical culture of Ancient China, as well as some aspects of musical education organization in the Pre-Qin period, have served as the primary basis in the sphere of modernization and improvement of the modern musical education system in this country. The aim of this article is to summarize some theoretical aspects of the organization of music education in ancient China – in the Pre-Qin period (8500–221 BC). Materials and methods. The generalized materials of researchers' works reveal the practice of “early” musical education in Ancient China, expressing the interests of this or that ruling dynasty (from the primitive society, where the Chinese national musical culture had originated, up to the Qin dynasty). Representing an important historical epoch, the Pre-Qin period reflects the time of the formation of a unique system of organization of traditional music education in China. Each era that is part of the Pre-Qin period has its own distinctive features and cultural and historical characteristics. Results. In the course of summarizing certain theoretical aspects of the organization of music education in the Pre-Qin period, the names of four epochs were specified, as well as the peculiarities of the organization of general and music education in ancient China. Thus, the first era “Chinese music education in primitive society” (or) “Prehistoric China” (8500–2070 BC) is conventionally considered a time of origin of music education; a period of formation of genres of Chinese folk music culture, based on myths, religion, legends, and customs of ancient China. The second era, “Chinese Music Education in the Xia and Shang Dynasties” or “Bronze Age” (2070–1046 BC), is characterized by the appearance of the first musical instruments; the transformation of the functions of music education – from religious service to entertainment; the consolidation of the name “court music and dance education”; the appearance of the first specialized educational institutions and “special” music teachers. Music education in the third era “Chinese music education in the Western Zhou Dynasty” (1046–771 BC) had the name “rites and music education”; distinguished by the appearance of the first musical performance groups; the training of “professional personnel” in music education. The peculiarity of the fourth epoch “Chinese music education in the Spring and Autumn Era and the Age of Fighting Kingdoms” (770–221 BC) is the modernization and improvement of forms, methods, and means of music education; production of musical instruments; wide practice of performing schools and educational activities of Chinese thinkers, politicians, and educators; and availability of music education to various strata of the population. Conclusion. This study allows arguing that the Pre-Qin period is the initial stage in the formation of music education in ancient China. Moreover, it also can be considered one of the most important times in a historical retrospective – the active development of the Chinese music education system.

Résumé :
This study delves into the Pre-Qin Confucian understanding of “ren 人” (human beings), focusing on the tripartite dimensions of “shen 身” (body), “qing 情” (sentiment), and “xin 心” (mind) as viewed through the lens of “li 礼” (ritual). By analyzing the works of Confucius, Mencius, Xunzi, and other significant early texts, we unravel how these early Confucian philosophers reconceptualized human beings within the framework of “li 礼” (ritual). In doing so, they presented a novel perspective on the human experience that emphasized the interconnectedness of these three dimensions, transforming the way people thought about themselves and their place in the world. This research illuminates the unique contributions of Pre-Qin Confucianism to the understanding of human beings and provides valuable insights into the philosophical breakthroughs of this period in Chinese thought. Furthermore, this understanding of human beings persisted throughout the subsequent imperial history of China.

This study focused on the concept of agricultural system as a research structure, so the researcher personally went to Mainland China for field investigaion and had chosen the Qi-Xia city as a study area to understand apple production. The purposes of this thesis were to study the transformation process of specialized agriculture areas, causes of agro-economic activity, industrializing development, and the effects of globalization on apple production. The Huang-Jia-Zhuang in Qi-Xia was selected as a case study, using agricultural system to analyze the importation of Fuji apple specie for Qi-Xia farmers and the utilization of land with regards to the apples. The farmers’ cognition and expertise in cultivating Fuji apples, their economic condition, government’s reservation policy for cultivated-land, and the quality of the soil were basic considerations to initiate the farmers to apply different strategic processes in importing Fuji apples. Thus, there were three different types of apples cultivation, including advanced, transitory, and retarded types in the study area. All of these had shaped the specialized Fuji area, and changed the land use types. As a result, there were altering farmland scenic views and farmers’life styles, and creating a commercial site in the village. In addition, there were causing swift increase in production and upgrading quality, and marking a new step into the development of apple transportation’s complete system. After China’s trade liberation and entry into the WTO, local and international corporations have increased their investment on Qi-Xia’s apple industry as well as increased cooperation with the farmers. Thus, there were producing high quality Fuji apples for export, shaping an unique operational process, and allowing the Qi-Xia to represent a more complete specialized apple-cultivated area.

Résumé :
The ‘Mandate of Heaven’ (Tian ming), a heaven-endowed right to rule over ‘All-Under-Heaven’ (Tian xia), receives most of the attention in contemporary discussions of pre-modern Chinese politics. Upon unification under Qin in 221 BCE, however, the ‘Mandate of Heaven’ played no role, with Qin declaring an entirely new imperial order. Nonetheless, its titles and terms drew upon pre-imperial concepts, including the metahuman powers of the ancestral temple and practices of royal gift-giving and punishment. As the centuries passed under Western Han, Xin, and finally Eastern Han rule, such concepts continued to receive pride of place, even while new ideas, including the ‘Mandate of Heaven’, rested on top of them. This chapter analyses four different sources, composed over the early imperial period, to illustrate this conceptual layering over time. The effort provides not only a more accurate understanding of early Chinese imperial politics, but also highlights a feature of all sovereign claims: they inevitably entail call upon history and rest in tension with previous narratives that never entirely go away. Attempts to establish and build political power and institutions must explain away such contradictions and construct narratives which render that power natural and sensical.

Résumé :
The xin is most commonly characterized in pre-Qin texts as a locus of thought and decision making, sometimes linked to cognition or moral emotions like worry or compassion, but primarily concerned with what we could very well call “reason.” Especially once we enter the Warring States, it is represented as at most only vaguely located in the body, with an extremely tenuous relationship to both the body itself and other bodily parts. It is reasonable to describe the xin as metaphysical, somehow free of the limitations of the physical world. Focusing on the term xin (heart, heart-mind, mind), this chapter uses qualitative textual analysis to make the case that early Chinese texts were written by people who embraced, at least implicitly, a “weak” form of mind-body dualism. This includes the idea that the mind is at least somewhat immaterial, qualitatively different from the other organs, and the seat of reason, free will, and the individual self.

Résumé :
This chapter combines the comparative study of political institutions with the methods of environmental history to examine the ecology of state formation in early China. The chapter traces this process in the central Yellow River valley, the heartland of Chinese civilization, from the origins of farming until the fall of China's first empire. It also focuses on the Guanzhong Basin of Shaanxi Province, a region known outside China for the city of Xi'an and the terracotta army that guards the tomb of the First Emperor of China. The chapter explores the ecology of political power from the origins of agriculture around ten thousand years ago to the fall of the Qin Empire in 207 BCE. The formation of Chinese culture was always a process of hybridization between conquerors and conquered, but in the long run the imperial center tended to have the upper hand.

Résumé :
Abstract In the year 221 bc, the state of Qin eliminated the last of its rivals, thereby unifying the ‘Chinese’ world after centuries of endless wars. Proudly, the king of Qin assembled his to discuss administrative and ritual adjustments appropriate to commemorate his achievements. The uncial’s in response praised the king: In antiquity, the lands of the Five Thearchs were one thousand li squared, beyond which was the overlords’ domain and the aliens’ domain. The overlords sometimes came to the court and sometimes did not, and the Son of Heaven was unable to regulate this. Now, your Majesty has raised a righteous army, punishing the savage criminals, has paced and stabilized All-under-Heaven, turning the territory between the seas into commanderies and counties; and laws and ordinances have a single source. From antiquity it has never been so; the Five Thearchs could not reach this This declaration, echoed elsewhere in Qin’s propaganda, proclaims the superiority of the First Emperor of Qin (Qin Shihuangdi, literally, the First August Thearch, r. 246–221–210 bc) over the former paragons, such as the legendary Five Thearchs (wu di) or the semi-legendary founders of the Three Dynasties (Xia, Shang, and Zhou, c. 2000–256 bc).

Résumé :
Manas K. Ghorai of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur depended (J. Org. Chem. 2013, 78, 2311) on memory of chirality during deprotonation to convert 1 to the aziridine 3. X. Peter Zhang of the University of South Florida demonstrated (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 5309) that Co-catalyzed enantioselective aziridination is compatible with fluoro-aromatics such as 5. David M. Hodgson of the University of Oxford prepared (J. Org. Chem. 2013, 78, 1098) the azetidine 8 by double deprotonation of 7 followed by acylation. Laurel L. Schafer of the University of British Columbia assembled (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 2182) 11 by Ta-catalyzed aminoalkylation of 10 with 9, followed by cyclization. Nicholas A. Magnus of Eli Lilly reduced (J. Org. Chem. 2013, 78, 5768) the ketone 12 to the alcohol 13 with high de and ee. Pei-Qiang Huang of Xiamen University effected (J. Org. Chem. 2013, 78, 1790) the reductive addition of 14 to 15 to give 16. The titanocene protocol reported (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 3494) by Xiao Zheng, also of Xiamen University, effectively mediated similar transformations. En route to (–)-quinocarcin, Nobutaka Fujii and Hiroaki Ohno of Kyoto University cyclized (Chem. Eur. J. 2013, 19, 8875) 17 to 18 with high diastereoselectivity. Dipolar cycloaddition, long a workhorse of pyrrolidine synthesis, has been improved by enantioselective organocatalysis. For instance, Liu-Zhu Gong of the University of Science and Technology of China combined (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 2676) 19, 20, and 21 to give the triester 22. Qi-Lin Zhou of Nankai University reduced (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 6072) the tetrahydropyridine 23 to 24 in high ee. Takaaki Sato and Noritaka Chida of Keio University cyclized (Chem. Eur. J. 2013, 19, 678) the intermediate from reduction of 25 to the piperidine 26. Yasumasa Hamada of Chiba University devised (Tetrahedron Lett. 2013, 54, 1562) the rearrangement of 27 to the piperidine 28. In a synthesis of (–)-hippodamine, Shigeo Katsumura of Kwansei Gakuin University used (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 2758) the chiral auxiliary 29 to direct the combination of 30 with 31 to give 32.

Résumé :
The first wave of film comedy in socialist China enjoyed only an ephemeral presence amidst the Hundred Flowers Campaign. This chapter turns attention to the intersection of and interaction between cinema and the traditional Chinese performing art of xiangsheng in the mid-1950s, seeking to tease out an innovative strand of comic filmmaking in the Mao era. Specifically, it takes as its case study the xiangsheng dianying (crosstalk film) of 1956, Wandering in the Zoo, Awaking from a Dream (Youyuan jingmeng), starring the well-known xiangsheng duo of Hou Baolin and Guo Qiru. Through an introduction of xin xiangsheng, a new type of xiangsheng created for the new Chinese society and a careful textual analysis of this particular xiangsheng dianying, the chapter illustrates that the interplay of xiangsheng and film, as seen in Wandering in the Zoo, Awaking from a Dream, transfigured each of the two media, increased much of the viewing pleasure of this film, and provided an understanding of the specificities of both xiangsheng and film. This rather ingenious experimentation of dynamical intermediality demonstrates that laughter under Mao could be innovative and experimental.

Résumé :
Jianhui Huang and Kang Zhao of Tianjin University devised (Chem. Commun. 2013, 49, 1211) a protocol for the oxidation of a terminal alkene 1 to the valuable four-carbon synthon 2. M. Christina White of the University of Illinois effected (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013, 135, 7831) the oxidation of the terminal alkene 3 to the enone 4. Miquel Costas of the Universitat de Girona developed (J. Org. Chem. 2013, 78, 1421; Chem. Eur. J. 2013, 19, 1908) a family of Fe catalysts for the oxidation of methylenes to ketones. Depending on the catalyst, any of the three ketones from the oxidation of 5, including 6, could be made the dominant product. Yumei Xiao and Zhaohai Qin of China Agricultural University optimized (Synthesis 2013, 45, 615) the Co-catalyzed oxidation of the methyl group of 7 to give the aldehyde 8. Thanh Binh Nguyen of CNRS Gif-sur-Yvette established (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013, 135, 118) a protocol (not illustrated) for the oxidation of methyl groups on heteroaromatics. Shunsuke Chiba of Nanyang Technological University cyclized (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 212, 3214) the amidine 9 to 10, and the hydrazone 11 to 12. These cyclizations proceeded by sequential C–H abstraction followed by recombination, and so were racemizing. In contrast, the conversion of 13 to 14, developed (Science 2013, 340, 591) by Theodore A. Betley of Harvard University, proceeded with substantial retention of absolute configuration. Tsutomu Katsuki of Kyushu University designed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013, 52, 1739) a Ru catalyst that was selective for the allylic position of the E-alkene 15 to give 16. Amination was highly regioselective, and proceeded with excellent ee. Ilhyong Ryu of Osaka Prefecture University and Maurizio Fagnoni of the University of Pavia reported (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 2554) the direct carbonylation of 17 to the amide 18. David W. C. MacMillan of Princeton University devised (Science 2013, 339, 1593) a protocol for the β- arylation of an aldehyde 19 to give 20. Directed palladation of distal C–H bonds continues to be developed. Srinivasarao Arulananda Babu of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research effected (Org. Lett. 2013, 15, 3238) diastereoselective arylation of the cyclopropane 21 with 22 to give 23.
