Résumé :
Set within the theoretical framework of cultural sustainability, this in-depth case study examines the Juer Hutong new courtyard housing prototype built in the inner city of Beijing, China, whose phase one was completed in 1990 and phase two in 1994. Juer Hutong (Chrysanthemum Lane) is located in the area of the celebrated Nanluogu Xiang (Gong and Drum Lane South), in proximity to the historic Drum and Bell Towers. It was a typically decayed traditional courtyard house neighborhood that urgently needed remodeling. After a decade of research and design led by Professor Wu Liangyong, and a group of students at the School of Architecture of Tsinghua/ Qinghua University, phase one of the project has won six awards, including the 1992 World Habitat Award. However, its proposed phases three and four were suspended from construction. This study elucidates the residents’ views of the completed two phases and offers four lessons and two new courtyard garden house design models for discussion and future practice.

Li, Wei, et Xijie Feng. « Discovery of the Qinghe fault, the inner part of the Weihe graben, central China, and its geological significance ». Frontiers in Earth Science 11 (17 avril 2023). http://dx.doi.org/10.3389/feart.2023.1127897.

Résumé :
The Weihe graben is an active Cenozoic continental rift with frequent seismic activity. The previous work focused on the graben boundary faults, but less work has been conducted on the faults in the internal graben. The Weihe basin is an economically developed and densely populated area. Therefore, identifying these potential risks is significant for the evaluation of regional seismic hazards and to understand the evolution of continental rifts. Prior work used oil exploration methods to document a fault (we named it “Qinghe fault”) in the Qinghe river area of Sanyuan County, north of Xi’an. But the shallow structure and activity was not clear. Therefore, we carried out shallow seismic detection and borehole exploration, as well as a geological survey in the area. Based on seismic reflection profile and boreholes, the Qinghe fault is the main fault and with other secondary faults, together they constitute a typical Y-shaped structure, with a fracture zone width ∼4 km. Combined with the field survey, we provide evidence that the Qinghe fault is a Holocene active fault and capable of earthquakes of magnitude 5.2–5.5. The discovery of the Qinghe fault shows that the Weihe rift is active, and the faults inside the rift play an important role in tectonic deformation.

The thesis studies a body of confessional manuals produced in the Chinese territory (and written in Chinese, with the help of local collaborators) by European missionaries during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties (about 1580-1780). Its objective is to examine the modifications that the normative (doctrine and liturgy) of the confession underwent during the process of adaptation to the cultural, spiritual and social circumstances of the Middle Empire, a process that we have called ""transcultural translation"". Specifically, it seeks to unravel the discursive strategies and resources of cultural adaptation to which the authors resorted in order to confront the penitential practices, already present in the Chinese thought in the moment of the arrival of the first European missionaries The thesis analyzes, in short, the diffusion of Christianity in the imperial China as an elaborate and complex evangelizing enterprise, an amalgam of political, religious and cultural interests and motivations.

As Chin Ping Mei, Xing Shi Yin Yuan, and the Dream of the Red Chamberto be the objects, this study is to reflect these four domestic fictions in Ming and Qing dynasties for the theme of time and cultural meanings they represented Along with readers’ prior exiting knowledge, a conception of eras which ordinarily established in domestic fictions is developing to be a metaphor of the time period. There is usually a close relationship between an individual and his family, and wax and wane in a family mainly bound with its nation; however, fatalism is not presented in the domestic fictions. In those novels, individuals are encouraged to be able to handle their own lifes. The sense of time in domestic fictions is in the process of everyday occurrence, such as meals, dressing, worship. Those domestic matters narrativing in daily life differences from the description in regular novels but approaches female's point of view. Blooming or adolescent flowers performs years went by rapidllly. Time and space are composing each other in the stories to complete time in the past or illusion in a dream. Seeing time fading away brings about much more emtion and effects in domestic fictions which are in the method of narrative. Therefore, as we can see that the narratives are affacted by a deeper sensation and transfered into lyrics, the expression of time is determined to be the significant role.

Résumé :
1 Michal Vázal: The Confucian Ideal of Harmonious Community according to the Norms of the Wu Lineage from Mingzhou Abstract Abstract: This paper aims to characterize the structure and values produced by rituals in a kinship community, and how these characteristics subsequently helped to shape a harmoniously working community and its ideological relationship with the state in terms of local governance. The rituals in question are partially confined in time and place, as they are observed on one particular community, and are examined only in the extent of the primary source named "The Norms and Rituals of the Wu Lineage of Mingzhou" (Mingzhou Wu Shi Jiadian) - a ritual manual authored mainly by Wu Di (died 1736) from the village of Mingzhou, which belonged to the Huizhou prefecture (the south of the present day Anhui province). On the other hand, this text is largely based on Zhu Xi's "Family Rituals" (Jiali) which were viewed across the country as the ritual standard. The most essential rituals used to govern the lineage were coming of age ritual, wedding rituals, funeral rituals and sacrifices to ancestors. A unifying principle behind the structure and values these rituals created was seniority. The lineage structure was created mainly by the system in which the branches of firstborn sons were superiors to...

Résumé :
This chapter focuses on how China provides the starkest alternative to the western European experience in terms of political development. It discusses how Westerners have sometimes seen China as an aberration that carries the culturalist baggage of an older era, which is a case called “oriental despotism.” The chapter considers the evolution of the Chinese state from the earliest dynasties, the Xia and the Shang, to its final dynasty, the Qing. It emphasizes how the Shang dynasty set the stage for what would become China's bureaucratic alternative. It also describes the early development of intensive, high-yield agriculture that provided a better explanation for Chinese autocracy.

Résumé :
This chapter explores how the notion of civilization affected historical consciousness in the U.S. and China, and was also involved in the creation of the subjectivities of the New Woman: on the U.S. side as a benevolent female emancipator by a country at the vanguard of historical progress in the world, and in China as a self-sufficient modern female in a country in imminent danger of falling into a state of wangguo. In addition, the chapter discusses the experiences of the first generation of American New Women missionaries who sailed to China to be part of the civilizing mission otherwise known as the U.S. foreign mission movement. They took issue with the direction of Chinese xin nüxing and with the radical activism among young Chinese women in the 1911 Revolution that overturned the Qing dynasty. By appropriating popularized versions of evolutionary theories, these missionaries constructed their legitimacy as teachers of Chinese women on the basis of comparisons with them, and they created educational projects and enterprises for Chinese women designed to create a more acceptable kind of New Woman that fell in line with mainstream views of American missionary women.
