Résumé :
The current paper introduces a case study dealing with the problem of pumpability of the ready-mix concrete of grade of C16/20-X0v (H)-24-F3 []. During solving a practical industrial problem we have worked out a modified composition of the related concrete material in order to improve the pumpability. After describing some possible theoretical and practical methods the authors give suggestion for a practical solution. The characteristic feature of the method consists in modifying the recipe of the given grade of concrete without altering the additive structure, and to assure the pulp saturation. The paper reports the results of standardised physical and mechanical tests, executed on the novel concrete material. Based on these results it has been proved, that besides solving the original practical problem of pumpability, the new concrete material possesses better application and technological performance, and is more economical to produce.

Résumé :
This study aims to estimate the pumpability and shootability of wet-mix shotcrete (WMS) made with crushed aggregates and various admixtures such as silica fume, fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), metakaolin, and steel fiber based on rheological properties. The IBB rheometer was employed as an apparatus to measure the rheological properties of freshly mixed shotcrete such as flow resistance and torque viscosity. Results have shown that the use of silica fume and metakaolin led to satisfactory pumpability, whereas mixtures with fly ash and steel fiber failed to meet the pumping criteria at normal pump pressure. The build-up thickness, an indicator to represent shotcrete shootability, was predicted to vary between 68 and 218 mm, demonstrating that the use of admixtures resulted in a wide spectrum of shootability. In particular, the use of metakaolin was found to substantially increase the predicted build-up thickness only with a small replacement. The findings of this study are expected to be used as an easy-to-use guideline for estimating pumpability and shootability of WMS when no compliance testing data is available.

Résumé :
With the increasing use of pumping to place concrete, the development and refinement of the industry practice to ensure successful concrete pumping are becoming important needs for the concrete construction industry. To date, research on concrete pumping has been largely limited to a few theses and research papers. The major obstacle to conduct research on concrete pumping is that it requires heavy equipment and large amounts of materials. Thus, developing realistic and simple measurement techniques and prediction tools is a financial and logistical challenge that is out of reach for small research labs and many private companies in the concrete construction industry. Moreover, because concrete pumping involves the flow of a complex fluid under pressure in a pipe, predicting its flow necessitates detailed knowledge of the rheological properties of concrete, which requires new measurement science. This paper summarizes the technical challenges associated with concrete pumping and the development in concrete pumping that have been published in the technical literature and identifies future research needed for the industry to develop best practices for ensuring successful concrete pumping in the field.

Résumé :
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fiber from waste plastic bottles is an environmentally friendly fiber that can improve the mechanical properties of wet-mix shotcrete. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the effects of PET fiber parameters on pumpability, shootability, and mechanical properties of wet-mix shotcrete. For this purpose, the orthogonal test based on three factors and three levels was conducted. The width, length, and content of PET fiber were selected as the experimental variables. The tests of wet-mix shotcrete reinforced by PET fibers were carried out, along with properties tests such as slump, pressure drop, build-up thickness, compressive strength, and splitting strength. The results showed the change trend of shotcrete performances with increasing PET fiber parameters (width, length, and content). According to the orthogonal test, PET fiber parameters were determined (1 mm width, 20 mm length, and 5 kg/m3 content). Furthermore, relationships between slump and pumpability and shootability were explored, as well as the relationships between pumpability, shootability, and mechanical properties. It was found that pressure drop and compressive strength had the strongest negative linear relationship among all fitting relationships. We hoped that this study could contribute the useful information for the application of wet-mix shotcrete mixed with PET fibers.

Résumé :
Soil-bentonite cutoff walls are usually used to contain the contaminants of landfills. The pumpability, permeability, and adsorption capability of the slurry are all crucial to the performance of the cutoff wall. In this study, the effect of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was used to improve the performance of bentonite slurry. A series of lab tests were conducted to evaluate the pumpability, permeability, and adsorption capacity with different concentrations of PVA treatment. Results show that the addition of PVA can increase the fluidity and pumpable period of slurry, which facilitates the casting and grouting during construction. The addition of PVA also helps to reduce the permeability coefficient of slurry and improve the adsorption capability which enhances the cutoff performance of the walls.

Résumé :
Abstract: The primary challenge in achieving 3D printable concrete lies in balancing conflicting characteristics of Pumpability and Buildability. On one hand, the concrete must be sufficiently flowable to be pumped through hoses, while on the other hand, it needs to exhibit enough strength for layer-by-layer construction. Overcoming internal shear resistance due to particle interactions is crucial for pumpability, and the material must also retain its shape after extrusion. This thesis presents a comprehensive study on the optimization of mix proportions for Alkali Activated Concrete (AAC) tailored for 3D concrete printing applications, with a focus on the utilization of Agro-Industrial waste. The primary objective is to optimize the mix proportions of AAC by varying the composition of Agro-Industrial waste, thereby contributing to sustainable construction practices

Résumé :
In this paper, preliminary research on lightweight aggregate shotcrete is carried out. The main discussion is the pumpability and sprayability of light aggregate injection by single-mixed and complex-doped mineral admixture, and the different dosages and different types are studied. The effect of mineral admixture on the physical and mechanical properties of lightweight aggregate shotcrete. The results show that the small amount of fly ash, silica fume and nano-silica can prevent the segregation and bleeding of the mixture. With the increase of the content of silica fume and nano-silica, the pumpability can be reduced. At the same time, the sprayability is increased. It has also been found that, due to the difference in particle size, the mutual complementation of particles between the complex mineral admixtures in terms of physical and mechanical properties results in a significant increase in sprayability and strength.

Résumé :
With increasing number of melting-solidification plants for the domestic wastes and incineration ashes, the resulting molten slag is now expected as a recycled aggregate for concrete in Japan, while application examples until now are limited to non-loadbearing pre-cast concrete and concrete secondary products. This study deals with a full-scale application of molten slag recycled fine aggregate. Starting with the inspection of monthly variations in quality of molten slag fine aggregate in a plant, construction of a full-scale structure was attempted using the recycled aggregate concrete with a superplasticizer. During construction, pumpability of the recycled concrete was examined and the quality of hardened concrete in the structure was evaluated. It was shown that quality variation of the molten slag fine aggregate during eight months was sufficiently small, and pumpability as well as concrete quality in structure showed no significant difference with those of the ordinary concrete.

Résumé :
In coal mine paste filling technology, geomaterials like coal gangue and fly ash are used as the main component, and cement is applied as the cementing material. In the mining production, mining-and-filling is a cyclic work, where the filling immediately after mining and mining immediately after filling. Long solidification time after filling will affect mining; consequently, the paste should have early strength. In addition, the prepared paste will be conveyed to goaf through the pipeline. The paste flow characteristics will change to some extent in the conveying process, and there is uncertainty about whether the paste can meet the requirements of pumpability and strength. Therefore, the influence of pipeline conveying on flow characteristics of paste before filling the goaf should be taken into consideration. Based on the above two points, this paper studies the paste strength, backfill strength, and pumpability parameters in coal mine paste filling and determines the early and later strength of coal mine paste, as well as the pumpability parameters such as slump degree, segregation degree, setting time, and paste gradation. With the determined mass proportion of coal gangue, fly ash, and silicate cement, the orthogonal test was carried out with three factors including gypsum content, the content of early strength agent (Na2SO4), and the mass concentration, and at three levels. The factors affecting paste flow characteristics were determined by range analysis, and the factors affecting the paste’s early strength were determined by the XRD test and SEM test on its microstructure. With paste proportioning and pipeline conveying simulation system, taking slump, segregation degree, backfill strength, and other parameters as indicators, we obtain the influence law of pipeline conveying on the flow characteristics of paste. The research has great theoretical and practical significance for developing coal paste with early strength and its flow characteristics.

Résumé :
Remote-pumped concrete for infrastructure construction is a key innovation of the mechanized and intelligent construction technology. This has brought steel-fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) into undergoing various developments, from conventional flowability to high pumpability with low-carbon features. In this regard, an experimental study on the mixing proportion design and the pumpability and mechanical properties of SFRC was conducted for remote pumping. Using the absolute volume method based on the steel-fiber-aggregate skeleton packing test, the water dosage and the sand ratio were adjusted with an experimental study on reference concrete with the premise of varying the volume fraction of steel fiber from 0.4% to 1.2%. The test results of the pumpability of fresh SFRC indicated that the pressure bleeding rate and the static segregation rate were not the controlling indices due to the fact that they were far below the limits of the specifications, and the slump flowability fitted for remote-pumping construction was verified by a lab pumping test. Although the rheological properties of the SFRC charactered by the yield stress and the plastic viscosity increased with the volume fraction of steel fiber, those of mortar used as a lubricating layer during the pumping was almost constant. The cubic compressive strength of the SFRC had a tendency to increase with the volume fraction of steel fiber. The reinforcement effect of steel fiber on the splitting tensile strength of the SFRC was similar to the specifications, while its effect on the flexural strength was higher than the specifications due to the special feature of steel fibers distributed along the longitudinal direction of the beam specimens. The SFRC had excellent impact resistance with an increased volume fraction of steel fiber and presented acceptable water impermeability.

Résumé :
There have been numerous studies on shotcrete based on strength and durability. However, few studies have been conducted on rheological characteristics, which are very important parameters for evaluating the pumpability and shootability of shotcrete. In those studies, silica fume has been generally used as a mineral admixture to simultaneously enhance the strength, durability, pumpability, and shootability of shotcrete. Silica fume is well-known to significantly increase the viscosity of a mixture and to prevent material sliding at the receiving surface when used in shotcrete mixtures. However, the use of silica fume in shotcrete increases the possibility of plastic shrinkage cracking owing to its very high fineness, and further, silica fume increases the cost of manufacturing the shotcrete mixture because of its cost and handling. Colloidal silica is a new material in which nano-silica is dispersed in water, and it could solve the above-mentioned problems. The purpose of this research is to develop high-performance shotcrete with appropriate levels of strength and workability as well as use colloidal silica for normal structures without a tunnel structure. Thereafter, the workability of shotcrete with colloidal silica (2, 3, and 4%) was evaluated with a particle size of 10 nm and silica fume replacement (4 and 7%) of cement. In this study, an air-entraining agent for producing high-performance shotcrete was also used. The rheological properties of fresh shotcrete mixtures were estimated using an ICAR rheometer and the measured rheological parameters such as flow resistance and torque viscosity were correlated with the workability and shootability. More appropriate results will be focusing on the Bingham model properties such that the main focus here is to compare all data using the Bingham model and its performance. The pumpability, shootability, and build-up thickness characteristics were also evaluated for the performance of the shotcrete. This research mainly focuses on the Bingham model for absolute value because it creates an exact linear line in a graphical analysis, which provides more appropriate results for measuring the shotcrete performance rather than ICAR rheometer relative data.

Résumé :
Air entraining agent (AEA) can bring a lot of microbubbles into fresh concrete for improving its fluidity; however, high fluidity has adverse effect on the shootability of wet-mix shotcrete. In order to solve the contradictory issue, the paper developed a new type of green switch air entraining agent (GSAE) that can improve both the pumpability and shootability. The single-admixture and combination tests containing foaming ability and surface tension were performed with Deer agitator and automatic tension meter. The new AEA was developed with two constituents A and B. A was prepared withSapindus mukorossi(S-1), dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride(1231), and polyacrylamide. B was prepared with lauryl sodium sulfate (K12) and silicone oil. The mass mix proportion was S-1 : 1231 : polyacrylamide : K12 : silicone oil = 1 : 0.33 : 0.2 : 0.33 : 0.47. The application method of GSAE proposed that A was premixed with fresh concrete and then B was added at nozzle. Experimental investigation showed that the optimal mixing amount of GSAE was 0.1%–0.2% relative to cement. All performance measured of wet-mix shotcrete with 0.12% GSAE met the first-grade product requirements of the China National Standard. Compared with the conventional type of AEA, the proposed GSAE is capable of effectively improving pumpability and shootability.

Calcium Sulphate α-Hemihydrate (CaSO4 . ½ H2O) has been shown to be a promising material to replace Portland Cement in some applications. The hydration of gypsum pastes goes through the process of saturation of the medium with Ca+2 and SO4-2 ions, then the physical phenomenon of crystallization, and finally the phenomenon of hardening, where the crystals formed precipitate producing Dihydrate (CaSO4 . 2H2O). Gypsum pastes harden very quickly, and their pumpability is impaired with thickening times of less than 20 minutes. For applications requiring longer pumpability times, the use of retarding additives is necessary. This research studied the effects of retarding additives in α-HH gypsum paste systems by varying the water-gypsum factor (FAG 0.4; 0.5 and 0.6) using a pressurized consistometer, under conditions of 54 °C and 9500 psi, with the aim of obtaining formulations with admissible thickening times for oil well cementing applications. The results showed that it was possible to develop paste systems with varying thickening times, with intervals of more than 120 minutes. The 0.5 FAG system proved to be more stable at the same retarder concentrations when compared to the 0.4 and 0.6 FAG systems.

Résumé :
Abstract New concrete often deteriorates performance, segregation, water secretion, and other phenomena ₒ Concrete workability and pumpability are reduced, and concrete segregation resistance agents can effectively solve the problem, and effectively improve the construction performance of fresh concrete. This study shows that acrylamide is 3.40%, AMPS is 1.50%, H2O2 is 0.06%, and suspension block is 0.2%. The optimum performance of the best performing liquid segregation resistance agent allows for a significant reduction in the amount of liquid segregation resistance agent used while the performance of the concrete remains unchanged.

Résumé :
Long-distance pumping of concrete (up to 2000 m, with relay pumps installed at two locations) was carried out for placing invert concrete at a caisson—the construction site of a spillway discharge section. After quantifying the required performance and determining of the mix proportions of the invert concrete that would be used in the long-distance pumping, the authors focused on thixotropy as a factor that affects the pumping load. Through laboratory tests and using AE and a high-range water reducing agent with high dispersion effect, retention and pumpability enhancing admixture were found to be effective in reducing thixotropy.

Résumé :
A new polycarboxylate-lignosulfonate copolymerized high performance water reducing agent (PCL) was synthesized by polymerizing self-made methoxy polyethylene glycol methacrylate (MPEGMA), methacrylic acid (MAA), lignosulfonate (LS) and sodium methyl acryl sulfonate (SMAS) in aqueous solution. Influence of LS dosage used in synthesis on the performance of the product was investigated. The performance of the new polymer and compounds prepared by polycarboxylate based superplasticizer (PC) and LS were compared, which revealed that the former has better properties of plasticizing and strength improving. Engineering applications indicated that concrete incorporating the new superplasticizer has advantages on its cohesiveness and pumpability. Moreover, it’s not easy to bleed, segregate and stick to the ground.

Résumé :
In the spirit of the sustainable buildings, and with the goal of protection of river courses, in the near future an already announced directive ordering closing down of a large number of river aggregate dredging operations will be adopted. For that reason, usage of crushed mineral aggregate in concrete mixes is increasing. Irrespective of downsides of the fined crushed mineral aggregate, such as the presence of fine particles bordering the upper permissible limit and the unfavorable shape of the grain of the course aggregate for obtaining liquid consistency required for the pumpable concrete, the demanded pumpability of concrete during transport and placement has been achieved. By adding admixtures to concrete, the required concrete properties, such as: frost resistance, simultaneous frost and salt resistance and water tightness have been achieved.
