Texte intégralSub-Saharan Africa has the greatest proportion of people living with HIV. As of 2005, 28.5 million people in southern Africa were living with HIV and 57% of them are women (UNAIDS, 2005). As the pandemic progresses, scholarly work is produced surrounding HIV but this still remains within the confines of the hegemonic construct of HIV as a biomedical problem. The literature does not reflect the fact that HIV is a gendered experience nor does it reflect the discourses of HIV produced by the women who are living with the virus. This study focused on uncovering the discourses of women living with HIV by conducting 15 semi-structured qualitative interviews with women living in a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. The research was conducted within a feminist framework and the interview questions focus on women's experiences of living with HIV. The interview transcripts were discursively analysed. The analysis focuses on the context in which the women were speaking as well as the language they employed. The discourses that emerged are: normalisation through men and work, the positive and negative effects of disclosure, taking care of men and children versus abuse, and bodily changes. The findings indicate that future research must take into consideration not only the dominant bio-medical discourses of HIV, but the discourses of the very women living with the virus. In addition, the discourses of women that emerge in this study indicate the need for the global restructuring of oppressive hegemonic systems that have exacerbated the HIV problem for women as well as men, if we are to see the end of HIV as a social problem.

Texte intégralThe gender role self concept - developed throughout one’s socialisation - has strong relations to a number of affects, cognitions and behaviours. Instruments to asses that part of the self have yet only relied on mostly positive aspects of masculinity and femininity. However, the definition of the self concept is not limited to that kind of merely positive valence, and from health psychology as well as group research the relevance of negative traits for self description is known and proven. Hence, in a series of seven studies, new items were developed that reflect actual cultural descriptions of masculinity and femininity including both, traits of positive and negative valence. Following a critical reflection of the German BSRI, to once more identify its weaknesses of positive scales only, four new scales are introduced, based on evaluations of typicality and social desirability. In two studies those four scales were allocated to specific psychological constructs of emotions and behaviours. It was shown that each single scale has its own relevance regarding the gendered self in prediction of validation constructs: negative masculine traits e.g. had a stronger relationship to aggression and power compared to positive aspects of masculinity. The result of that development and validation process are four short, independent, and reliable scales, that reflect positive as well as negative aspects of masculinity and femininity. The introduction of an individual importance measure as part of the self description - comparable to the expectation-value-model in motivation and attitude research - could not add any predictive power in the validation process and therefore will not be included in the final instrument.

Texte intégralENGLISH ABSTRACT: To address the research question of how young women themselves experience the transition into womanhood, by looking at the articulated subjective experiences of young women involved in negotiating the process of 'becoming a woman'. The research question was approached from a post-modern feminist and social constructionist perspective, using qualitative methodology. In-depth interviews were conducted with two groups of young women - five white, middle class students who are involved in the Women's Mental Health Research Project (WMHRP) as interviewers, and five coloured, working-class young women who would be interviewees in the WMHRP. These two groups of participants were recruited from different social backgrounds in order to investigate contextual variations in their identity negotiation processes. Transcripts of the interviews were analyzed according to constructivist grounded theory protocol (Charmaz, 2003; Henwood & Pidgeon, 2003). Three main categories were constructed from the data, namely 1) the girl/woman dichotomy, 2) the "woman imperative", and 3) different processes experienced. In chapter one, an introduction is provided which discusses the importance of the research question to feminist and developmental psychologists, and highlights the paucity of research on the topic within these areas. Chapter two examines the empirical literature surrounding the research question, which highlights the marginalization of the transition into womanhood by psychological researchers. Anthropological studies of 'rites of passage' are also briefly discussed. In chapter three the theoretical framework that informed the present study is discussed, namely 1) social constructionism, with its focus on discourse and its rejection of essentialism, and 2) feminism, with its emphasis on gendered identity, difference and power. Concepts central to the present study, namely development, gender, and identity are also discussed in this chapter. Chapter four provides an explanation of the methodology and methods that were used in the present study, while chapter five presents the results and a discussion of the results. Finally, chapter six consists of a discussion of the conclusions that can be drawn from the findings, as well as their implications for research and practice.

------ ABSTRACT ------ The main object of the study was to determine the personality structure of women who delivered prematurely. Based on an exploratory, observational and transversal research design, a sample of 301 premature mothers was obtained in 2 health institutions on the outskirts of Lisbon. The demographic, clinical and psychological data was collected through a research protocol based on the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (Five-Factor Model) and a Sample Questionnaire. The clinical and demographic variables portray the participant in the following manner: average 28,39 years when pre-term child was born; 67,12% were first time mothers; 79,07% were Caucasian; 86,05% were married; 89,03% lived with partner in family home; 64,12% planned, 95,68% desired and 95,59% monitored the pregnancy; 23,23% had previously given birth to another premature child; 77,74% worked during pregnancy; 66,77% of births were through cesarean section; neonates were born with mean gestational age 31,63 weeks and mean weight of 1647,90 grams. The psychological variables, when compared with normative values (Portuguese population) depict a personality profile high in Extroversion (E; p = 0,0001) and low in Neuroticism (N; p = 0,0001). The participants can be characterized as not being hostile (N2; p = 0,0001), vulnerable (N6; p = 0,02) depressed (N3; p = 0,0001) or self-conscious (N4; p = 0,02). Instead they are assertive (E3; p = 0,0001), active (E4; p = 0,0001) and have more positive emotions (E6 p = 0,0001). Although they do not appreciate aesthetics (02; p = 0,01) and actions (04; p = 0,02), they are prone to having more ideas (05; p = 0,0001) and values (06; p = 0,04). Altruistic (A3; p = 0,04), self-disciplined (C5; p = 0,002), less deliberate (C6; p = 0,03) they are not very committed to duty (C3; p = 0,0001). Being what the authors consider as very "feminine", their extroverted and active nature on both the personal and social level is analyzed in view of what is commonly expected of a mother-to-be in the process of "emotional gestation".

This study intends to trace out the connections among femininity, maternity and identification through the forensic psychologist s task in family courts, in cases that involve child-custody disputes. This is a qualitative study, with a psychoanalytic basis. The dissertation was developed in a particular setting and is organized around two main focuses. In the first one, there is the institutional context. Here are presented which are the cases under evaluation by the Child and Youth Court and the Family Court, as well as the description of the task of the psychologist in those processes. Starting with the premise that Family Court cases concern parties who maintain emotional connections with each other, the study questions the forensic model. It affirms the possibility of an psycoanalytical listening that also contains the possibility of intervention (and consequently of psychoanalytical research) into the families that seek the courts to resolve intrapsychic or intersubjective conflicts. The second focus is directed to articulate femininity, maternity and identification from the exam of three cases. In these, the women are faced with the fact that provisory custody is given to the father, thus making them feel it like a narcissist loss and the alterity of the child is kept in secondary place. Without intending to generalize, inquiry is made into the narcissistic value of maternity and its relationship to femininity, discussing the question with a focus on identification of these women with their own mothers, outstanding an identification that operates in the mode of melancholic identification

Texte intégralThis work analyzes, according to Freudian texts, the route to become a woman, its contributions and impasses today. Its in the encounter with the feminine, attempting to understand the meaning of fantasies and hysterical symptoms, that Freud found out the inconsciousness, the trauma, sex, that drove to childhood sexual experiences. Studying sexuality in perversion, we face childhood sexuality and its many-formed perverted nature. Sexuality leaves then, perversion field to come into impulse and desire field. In this context, Freud develops a theory of feminine sexuality referred to castration and phallic primacy, only way to the acquisition of a normal feminism. Reflecting and analyzing to become a woman according to Freud, sent it to the society of spectacle and narcissism worship. Woman, through this path, has conquered many spaces, creating new social links: has left private space, meant by marriage and motherhood, to be at the spectacle scenery. Viewing this scenery in the consumers universe society and its consequences in the feminine subjectivity, tending to analyze in details womans relation with her own body and sexuality, stressed by sexual excess and tied to an ideal body, source of sorrow and pain. At present-day, thats the image of woman-body-sex that comes up with masks and technological devices, searching the desired-perfect body, trying to deceive failure incompleteness, death. Its body-sex as object of desire and consumption, that sells anything and becomes others object of pleasure. It shows an open-wide sexuality, primitive, without limits. It changes from a hysterical to a body-sex woman, the one that plays the whore in the masculine fantasy, legitimated by the social, idealized and feminine model. Feminism meaning what the seduction and erotism game owns as the most sublime, mysterious and gorgeous-showed in a subtle erotic gesture, a neckline,a revelation has no value today. The woman shows, through her highly erotized body, the necessity of searching other knowledges, before new forms of erotization she faces

Texte intégralTraditional femininity is a construct that impacts women throughout their development and manifests through inauthenticity in relationships, self-objectification and inauthentic sexuality. Traditional femininity has been associated with greater depression, body shame, dissociation, and negative sexual outcomes. Traits of traditionally defined femininity can impede women’s ability to assert their sexual wants and needs and can increase the likelihood of negative health outcomes and negative psychological consequences, all of which impact relationship satisfaction and sexual well-being. To date, the majority of research in this area has focused on adolescent and college aged women. The current study addressed the gap in existing research by focusing on women in their 30s (n=146) and women in their 60s ( n=81). The study assessed their level of traditional femininity ideology (TFI) and exploring whether their degree of TFI impacted their sexual well-being. The study took a quantitative approach and 230 participants were recruited through the internet to complete the studies survey. Results indicated that there was no significant difference between the two age cohorts on a measure of inauthenticity in relationships. Participants in their 30s were found to engage in greater self-objectification than the 60s cohort, and the study found that women in their 30s enjoyed sexualized attention to a greater degree than did the women in their 60s. Although the study had hypothesized that there would be a relationship between the participants’ level of TFI and their sexual well-being, no relationship was found. Implications for future research and application for clinical practice are discussed.

Hedjem, Louisa.
Texte intégralThis thesis is based on thinking around the unprecedented action of the Maid of Orléans which created the Joan of Arc matrix. In order to understand this intriguing and singular specificity, we hypothesise that the major changes operated in and by the anomaly of the Maid of Orléans can be explained by the adolescent process, the work of a creating adolescent. She is emblematic of the adolescent who finds themselves developing outside of the social framework of adolescence. The language of her transgressive verbal and behavioural actions, which can be viewed as phallic-narcissistic, express a masculine femininity in which a combination of identifications and ideals passed on by the parent figures are coalesced and reworked. In a pubescent context, we hypothesis that the voices heard by Joan of Arc are not a sign of psychosis but a sort of double of herself, a transitional intermediary, opening up the development of a relationship with herself and with others; a form of support which authorises and stimulates the creation of a self that is both original and disturbing in medieval times. In the XIXth century, Republicans and Nationalists, building a new France, on new foundations, established an ideological position through national storytelling which used Joan of Arc's heroic function to further patriotic idealism. A prototype of the patriotic hero, she was to be used as a support and vector of heroic identification and shared ideals. The identification-identity-ideal nexus is deployed in both the individual and the collective: it helps to understand the identity issues, to respond to the individual's need for identity and the desire to repair the trauma and damage inflicted

Texte intégralThis thesis seeks to study the relationship between fathers and daughters in a postmodern patriarchal society. Choosing the Syrian society as its main case study, the paper aims to crystallize a better understanding of how such relationships are established as well as exploring their characteristics, consequences, and effects on adolescence in general, and on teenagers in particular. It also focuses on the transformation effects from the current world, depending on subjective construction, expressions of suffering inherent to human conditions in the new symbolic order that imposes liberalism on interpersonal relations, galloping globalized economy ; and the technologization of exchange among the speaking-beings/parlêtres (Lesourd, 2007a, p. 11-12).The aforementioned factors this paper analyzes encourage further investigation into the influence of modernity on father-daughter bonds. Such investigation is particularly important in light of the remarkable and increasing number of suicide attempts among young girls and women in the Arab region, likely in response to difficulties they face. These suicide attempts, we argue, are a result of fathers’ absence, and the authority which could be abusively opposed to parents as per Serge LESOURD, holding them responsible for violence by their children. Lesourd argues that “fathers did not quit, on the contrary, the reference system which had given them weight, has been modified in the occident” (Lesourd, 2003, p.36). We believe that the case in the Arab world is similar to the one described by Lesourd. The paper is divided into two parts : the first contains theoretical reflections while the second contains clinical examples about the construction of Syrian female teenagers’ sexual identity. This clinical projective study was carried out as part of CoPsyEnfant research, conducted by l’URP/SCLS in Strasbourg
