Résumé :
Protestants mobilize objects such as ‘Holy Land’ flowers, Jordan River stones, vials of Dead Sea water, sand from Lake Tiberias, and Golgotha soil as potent metonymic resources, promising a kind of direct access to the scriptural past and its sacred stories. This article uses this case of biblical landscape items to reflect on the historic ambivalence that characterizes Protestant relations with religious materiality. Building on scholarship that has demonstrated the prolific role of religious materiality in Protestant ritual and everyday lifeworlds, the author extends this analysis by asking: under what conditions do Protestants experience materiality as untroubled and under what conditions is a more anxious disposition activated? To differentiate among conditions, the author proposes that it is helpful to conceptualize Protestant engagements with materiality vis-à-vis legitimized frames (e.g. pedagogy, devotion, evangelism, entertainment). Drawing together archival and ethnographic data, primarily among US Protestants, the article argues that when Protestants function within legitimized frames they are prone to embrace biblical landscape items, but when they find themselves out of frame, their engagement with this particular species of materiality becomes troubled.

Résumé :
The issue of the Edict of Toleration legalised Protestants of Lutheran and Reformed confessions in Bohemia and Moravia. Their religious life required the support of printed materials in the form of religious literature of the corresponding confession approved by the state. Relatively high production of Protestant books, both original and translated, began to emerge. They anchored both Protestant denominations but simultaneously became mutually competitive and sometimes came into controversy with Roman Catholic authors. The author of this article monitors all printed Protestant literature in Bohemia and Moravia of the so-called toleration period, i.e. the period when the believers of the two Protestant confessions did not have full-fledged positions and were affected by numerous restrictions. In terms of book culture, it is divided into: 1) the period of early toleration (1781–1800), 2) the period of established toleration (1800–1848) and 3) the period of late toleration (1848–1861). In this framework, he provides an overview of Protestant literature in terms of its typological, authorial and publishing development and also evaluates the readership of this literary production.

The divorce rate in Indonesia is getting higher. come from all classes of Indonesian citizens, both high and low social status, and from different religious backgrounds. In Law Number 1 of 1974 concerning Marriage, the aim is to complicate Divorce, but it also regulates divorce. Teachings on the norms of Protestant Christianity also prohibit Divorce which is an act that is hated by the divine Jesus. The church as an institution that regulates Protestant Christians does not allow divorce decisions made by its congregation. Therefore here the author raises the issue of how the juridical review of Divorce according to the Marriage Act and the christian norms of Protestants and the legal consequences for protestant Christians. This research is normative legal research using legislation approach and comparison approach, therefore this research uses primary, secondary, and tertiary legal materials.Based on the research results, the authors obtained answers to existing problems. Termination of Marriage due to Divorce based on the norms of Protestant Christianity for adherents is legal according to the Legislation, however the church as an institution that regulates its people there is still no certainty regarding Divorce. Protestant churches only assist congregations who want to divorce but do not prohibit them because divorce is a civil right of all Indonesian citizens, but the church is still responsible for its congregation who commits divorce. The legal consequences of divorce are the breaking up of the husband and wife relationship, the consequences for the child, and the consequences for joint property. According to the norms of Protestant Christianity, the result of Divorce is sin.

Résumé :
Beginnings of Reformation in Kurów in the Lublin Province: “heretic” readings and First Followers of Protestantism On the basis of excerpts of distinguished historian Stanisław Kot, deposited in the library of the Jagiellonian University, the author reconstructs the contents of a silva rerum of the Zbąski family from the Lublin Province. The silva rerum itself was destroyed during World War II, yet the remaining notes enable us to reconstruct many facets of the Zbąski family’s life in sixteenth-century Lublin Province, including the inventory of books kept by this noble family in their library in 1547. The author believes that this collection was the property of Abraham (Abram) Zbąski, son of the Lublin Castellan Stanisław (d. 1553). Abraham was studying in Wittenberg in 1544 and sympathized with Lutherans, a sentiment which finds its expression in the inventory. In 1553, the Knurów Catholic church was turned into a Protestant temple, but the local active Protestants were prosecuted by the Kraków diocese bishop, Andrzej Zebrzydowski. In the later Protestant historiography, one of them – vicar Mikołaj (Nicholas) – is named and considered a martyr of the Protestant case.

Résumé :
Protestant spirituality is characterized by the mutual relationship between Word and Spirit. The doctrinal formulations of this relationship in the confessions of the Reformation period show that this specific feature of Protestant spirituality originated from the opposition to Rome and the Radical Reformation. The objections by Protestants against the mediaeval view that grace was infused through the sacraments led them to emphasize that faith was worked by the Spirit, in the heart. On the other hand, their objections against spiritualizing tendencies in the Radical Reformation led them to emphasize that faith was a matter of trust, based on the external Word. This two-sided tension led to a nuanced view of the relationship between the external Word of God and the internal work of the Spirit. In Lutheran and Reformed theologies this led to different spiritualities. The author traces these developments by analysing several Protestant confessions of the Reformation period.

Abstract It is an honourable job to consider the way of Protestant ethics and its position in moral conflicts of the present from the perspective of Catholic perception. The author persecutes this perspective in three steps. Firstly, he elaborates his personal fascination about Protestant ethics. In a second step, the irritations about Protestant ethics are shown. Not only are the necessary for the perspective from the Catholic to the Protestant side. The ambivalence of individualization processes as well as the ethical relevance of the faith in the Creation has to be taken into account. Before closing the essay with the third step, what the author hopes for the Protestant ethics, the theological significance of a relational ontology is explained

Résumé :
Protestants in the Region of Kalisz from 16th to 18th Century and Their Sacral Architecture: an Outline The aim of this study is to offer a brief outline of protestant sacral architecture in the region of Kalisz, comprised of historic counties of Kalisz, Pyzdry and Konin from the 16th to 18th Century. Author tries to trace foundations of new parish churches for the United Brotherhood and lutheran communities. The general research question posed in this study targets different typologies of protestant church architecture in the region, including analysis of architecture and arrangements of interior, with focus on longevity of some typological units. Those issues were backgrounded in the historical framework of protestantism in the region of Kalisz, including situation of different waves of immigration or religious exile from other countries, affecting local confessions (to mention imigrants from Bohemia, Silesia or German-speaking rural colonists, called “Olędry”) from the outbreak of protestantism, counterreformation in Poland and introduction of religious tolerance in the mid-18th Century. The last factor affected protestant sacral architecture in many ways, allowing many new interesting and monumental churches of lutheran confessions to be constructed, often showing innovation in form and spatial arrangement.

Résumé :
This study presents an overview of the institutions and forms of higher education in Switzerland. In addition to the University of Basel, founded in 1460, the author deals with Protestant Hohen Schulen (academies) (established in Zurich in 1525, in Bern in 1528, in Lausanne in 1537, and in Geneva in 1559) and Jesuit colleges which were founded between the last third of the sixteenth century and the first third of the seventeenth century. Apart from the Basel university, which was transformed into a Protestant university after the Reformation, Swiss Protestants had no possibility of studying law or medicine or even obtaining an academic degree in their own country. The Protestant academies were essentially training centres for the next generation of pastors and the same applied to the Jesuit colleges, which likewise granted no university privileges. Many students therefore had to seek academic training in the neighbouring countries. Both the University of Basel and the Protestant academies (though less so the Jesuit colleges) nevertheless attracted high numbers of foreign students, especially religious refugees who immigrated to Switzerland in several waves from the second half of the sixteenth century onwards, initially from Italy and England, but later also from France, Savoy-Piedmont, and Hungary. As a result, all Protestant educational institutions functioned as ‘exile colleges’ until the early eighteenth century. This specific situation of institutions of higher learning remained largely in place until the end of the nineteenth century – largely in consequence of the peculiarities of Switzerland’s strong federal constitution.

The study shows the overrepresentation of Protestant journals among religious periodicals in the Czech lands in the second half of the ‘long’ 19th century and attempts to analyse it. The author explains why these periodicals did not emerge earlier and first appeared in the revolutionary years of 1848–49. In several epochs of different character, he then outlines the frequency and types of Protestant journals of the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century. He notes that they were mostly written in the Czech language and were issued by both popular Protestant churches (Lutheran as well as Reformed). Among the reasons for this uniqueness, the author includes the economic, social, cultural and intellectual rise of the Protestant minority in this period, its social and geographic characteristics, and the high value placed in that environment on the diversity of opinion and debates.

Résumé :
AbstractProtestant critique of the Catholic idea of inherent righteousness has, since the time of the Reformation, given rise to counter-questions about the status of faith in Protestant theology. Is faith a human condition for justification (that is, a human act or inherent property which is necessary for justification), and why should not faith in that case be counted as a kind of work? Many Protestant theologians, however, view it as very important to dissociate faith from works. This article examines a number of Protestant attempts to explain why faith is not a work. The examined explanations rely on a number of ideas, for example, that faith is not a work because faith is a gift of God, or because faith is non-voluntary, or because faith is not a condition of justification, or because faith does not merit justification, or because faith is union with Christ. The problem with many of these Protestant answers to the question of why faith is not a work is that they can equally well be used to explain why the supernatural virtue of love is not a work. The Reformers, however, strongly associated love with ‘works of the law’, and wanted to keep love out of the doctrine of justification. For Protestants who share this view of love, the present article poses a challenge. Is it possible to dissociate faith from works without at the same time dissociating love from works, thereby legitimising the Tridentine understanding of justification? The author concludes that this is indeed possible, but only if an important identity marker for much Protestant theology is given up, namely the purely forensic understanding of the doctrine of justification.

Résumé :
This article considers how, impelled by confessional divisions caused by the Reformation, a general sense of pan-Protestant community grew across Europe, and its members launched a long battle against Roman Catholicism far beyond the 16th century. Indeed, it continued into the mid-18th century, the so-called Age of Reason. If it cannot necessarily be described as an open war of religion like the Thirty Years War, it was at least a cold war. From their points of view, the Protestant minorities threatened by the Roman Catholic Counter Reformation, such as the Waldensians in northern Italy and the Lithuanian Calvinists, stood on the front line in this war. Thus, financial support was regularly offered by the Protestant churches in Great Britain and Ireland to their distressed brethren across the continent, university scholarships were set up for students from Catholicdominated areas, and plans were drafted for a Protestant union in Europe, from a military level to an ecclesiastical one. It is in this context that we must understand how apparently strange a phenomenon as British support for the translation of the Bible into Lithuanian developed. The author sees Chylinski’s activities in the tradition of learning and charity exhibited in the 1650s by the three leading members of the Hartlib philosophical circle, namely, Samuel Hartlib (originally from Elbing), Jan Amos Comenius (from Moravia), and John Dury (born in Edinburgh, he spent his early life in various places in northern Europe), who were, in a sense, Protestant refugees to England from north-central Europe. After Chylinski, British support for Lithuanian Protestants did not end. She traces the work of Robert Boyle and the foundation of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (1699), which organised relief for Žemaitijan Calvinists in the early 1730s.

Résumé :
The article examines the historical origins of the notion of Christ's threefold office as priest, prophet and king as applied to the church, highlighting the seminal contribution of John Calvin. After an initial reception into Catholic theology in the nineteenth century, it is Vatican II's document Lumen gentium which first receives the trilogy into official Catholic teaching in a significant way. The author examines issues that need addressing in any reconstructed theology of, in particular, the “prophetic office” and proposes that future ecumenical dialogue with Protestants on the three offices may provide opportunities for further Catholic reception of this Protestant framework.

Résumé :
Thomas Cromwell's association with various writers has long been noted, but how these authors' writings might reflect his personal religious beliefs has not been closely studied. An examination of one such author, William Marshall, and of his work, reveals not only that Cromwell was likely a Lutheran, but that he used the press to promote doctrinal Protestantism in England. Through Marshall, Cromwell sponsored English translations of doctrinally radical texts by Martin Luther, Joachim von Watt, and Martin Bucer. And when these books got Marshall into trouble, Cromwell protected him. The picture that emerges substantiates John Foxe's description of Cromwell as a ‘valiant soldier and captain of Christ’, but also the charge made in his bill of attainder, that he had circulated heretical books.

Résumé :
In this article, the author attempts to reveal some aspects related to the transformation of the confessional identity of members of Protestant religious organizations operating in the Southern, Middle and Polar Urals and identifying themselves as representatives of “other” ethnic groups that are not widespread in Russia. The article presents data on the confessional identity of the respondents and on the factors that contributed to their adoption of Protestant Christianity. The research materials allow us to conclude that the religious identity (or lack of it) of the respondents before coming to Protestantism is close to that of the respondents from the general sample in the Urals; most of all among the “other” Protestants were atheists or non-denominational theists who “simply” believed in God. Most of all, both among “other” Protestants and among believers from the general sample of those who came to Protestantism with the assistance of close people who enjoy the greatest trust: friends, parents, relatives and spouses. Domestic and foreign missionaries, as well as members of religious communities personally unknown to the respondent, played an insignificant role in the religious choice of the respondents from both samples. The data presented in the article demonstrate that the confessional affiliation (or lack of it) of the respondents before they adopted Protestantism, as well as the factors contributing to the acquisition of their religious identity by Protestants, do not depend on ethnic identity.

Devotions in the Ancient Way of Offices was first published as a Catholic primer for worship between intimates, then reformed for individual Protestant worship, and then reformed again for Protestant worship between intimates. Each adaptation engages the so-called “ancient” quality of its offices, primarily medieval, as authorization for the kinds of domestic worship it promotes. I examine how the author and adapters of the text authorize their creative and adaptive devotional texts through a nostalgic interpretation of medieval worship practices as uniquely representative of the worship practices of the early church. While confessional debates had polarized discussions about the lineage of the church, this text represents a trend in seventeenth-century Protestant devotional primers attempting to reconcile spiritual divisions by re-introducing Protestant believers to pre-Reformation practices of domestic devotion.

On the basis of versatile source materials, the author examines the problem of the preservation of the Roman Catholic and Protestant faith among the German colonists of Bessarabia in the 19th – early 20th centuries. The author comes to the conclusion that religious specificity, along with the German language, contributed to the preservation of their ethnic identity in the conditions of a different ethnic environment. Attention is drawn to how, under the influence of the German colonists, Protestant views in the form of Stundism (Baptism) became widespread among those professing Orthodoxy. The author focuses on the fact that for a long time, almost until the reforms of the 70s. XIX century, the Russian government was very loyal to the heterodoxy among the German colonists, which to a large extent contributed to the preservation of their ethno-confessional identity and isolation.

The article is dedicated to the diplomatic relationships between the British Kingdom and the Huguenots during the Anglo-French War of 1562-1564 and their influence on the foreign policy of England and France. The author analyzes the main directions of the diplomatic relations of the Elizabethan politicians with the French Protestants, finds out the factors and circumstances of the defeat of the Huguenots in the Battle of Dre and change the course of diplomatic relations between the countries. Also, author observes the course and results of the war of 1562-1564, and concludes that the defeat for England in this military conflict in the future had positive effects. For Elizabeth I became clear that it makes no sense to rely on the further assistance of Protestant forces from other states to the English case. Résumé :
The article discusses seven melodies of the Christian Orthodox church hymns, which have counterparts in Uniate, Catholic and Protestant church music since the first influences in the 17th century until the 21st century. The Lithuanian Orthodox, Catholic, Uniate and Protestant church singing has been widely researched; the author has discussed the parallels between Orthodox and Uniate singing in her previous publications, yet paleographic data of the musical text of the Uniate and Orthodox hymnals (irmologions) dating from the 17th–18th centuries allows supplementing and clarifying the data regarding “Vilnius” Uniate and Orthodox hymns of the 17th–18th centuries as well as presenting transcriptions of the melodies carried out by the author. Correspondences between the Orthodox church melodies of the 18th–21st centuries in the Catholic and Protestant church singing in Lithuania have never been studied. The comparative analysis of the melodies of the Christian church hymns from Vilnius reveals that the related Orthodox and Uniate and Orthodox and Catholic melodies were connected by the common historical sources, namely, the “Greek” and “Bulgarian” melodies of the post-Byzantine singing style that was common on the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 17th–18th centuries, while current interconnections between the Vilnius Protestant and Orthodox church singing are reflected in the church music created by composers.

Résumé :
Summary The paper deals with the Bohemian Reformation literature. Culture of the Bohemian Reformation belongs to a little-known phenomenon in Czech historiography. Art and culture historians have focused mostly on the Hussite period and less on the 16th and 17th centuries. An important issue is the reception of German Lutheran religious educational literature in Protestant Circles of the Czech lands. The author focuses primarily on books in which the genre of mediation dominates, and explores the prompt Czech reaction to several German authors (Martin Moller, Johann Gerhard etc.) active between approximately 1580–1620 who found intensive response in the Bohemian Lands. The second important field is the Czech hymnography in the 17th–18th centuries. The author finds German inspiration for Czech hymnbooks. He deals with Luther’s songs in the hymnbook Cithara sanctorum by Jiří Třanovský and especially with late baroque Protestant exile hymnbooks influenced by the Pietistic Circle in Halle and Herrnhut (Harfa nová [‘A New Harp’] by Jan Liberda, Lipský kancionál [‘Hymnbook of Leipzig’] by Georg Sarganek). Owing to the German stimuli, the spectrum of genres, ideological processes and stylistic registers in Czech literature from the 16th to 18th centuries is comparatively rich and diversified.

Résumé :
The Protestant Reformation was a crucial spring of modern international relations. Had it lever occurred, a system of sovereign states would not have arrived, at least not in the form or at he time that it did at the Peace of Westphalia. This is the counterfactual the author seeks to sustain. He first advances an elaborated but qualified defense of the conventional wisdom that Westphalia is the origin of modern international relations. He then accounts for how Protestant deas exerted influence through transforming identities and exercising social power. Structural heories, emphasizing changes in material power, are skeptical of this account. The author roots lis empirical defense of ideas in the strong correlation between Reformation crises and polities' interests in Westphalia. A description of the historical causal pathways running from ideas to political interest then follows. Germany and France are brought as cases to illustrate two of these pathways. Finally, the author shows the evidentiary weakness of alternative structural material explanations.

Résumé :
The article addresses representations of the Evangelical denomination at contemporary permanent museum exhibits in the region of Masuria, inhabited between 1525–1945 by a Protestant majority. Applying semiotic analysis, the author presents the outcomes of field studies in the local museums in Olsztyn, Mikołajki, Mrągowo, Ogródek, Szczytno, and in the open-air museum in Olsztynek. The principal research question is the issue of visibility and recognisability of Evangelism-related items at permanent exhibits. The author concludes that there are three types of omissions in the presentation of the history of Masurian Evangelicals. The silencing of the Protestant past of Masuria results from the cultural colonisation that took place after 1945 and from identifying Evangelicalism with Germanness in the common consciousness of the currently dominant Polish Roman Catholic community.

InReforming Hollywood, William D. Romanowski defends mainline Protestants from the charge that they acted like bluenose censors during the movie controversies of the twentieth century. In fact, he claims, they consistently supported free expression even as they fought to make Hollywood acknowledge and give scope to moral values beyond the profit motive. Unlike these mainline Protestant “structuralists,” who sought to morally elevate the broader society, both Catholics in the earlier part of the century and evangelicals in the latter took a “pietistic” approach that emphasized individual morality and sought to censor obscenity, blasphemy, and ideological unorthodoxy in film. While structuralists (whom the author often simply identifies as liberals) wanted to cooperate with Hollywood in campaigns of “movie betterment,” pietists (conservatives) wanted to rein in the moviemakers and cleanse the screen of “unwholesome” content.

Résumé :
A historic review of the emergence of domestic faith-based higher education institutions founded by the Protestants is proposed, from informal and underground presence to full participation in the educational realm. Best achievements worth scaling are systematized. Best accomplishments of the public organization "Evangelical Accreditation Theological Association" in terms of performing the functions provided by the unrealized provisions of Article 23 of the Law of Ukraine "On Search for Education" on independent institutions for evaluation and quality assurance of higher education are examined. In the official letter, issued by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine on July 5, 2018, under № 1/9-421 addressed to the leaders of all higher education institutions, there is a list of 230 ‘faith-based’ schools, with about 44 % qualifying as Protestant. Historically it was the Protestant Branch of Christianity that laid foundational principles even in the world-recognized Universities like Harvard. Quality assurance is being declared as one of the top priorities of Ukraine’s development. At the same time within almost 30 years, none of the Ukrainian Universities made it to the top of world rankings. At the same within almost 30 years of Ukraine’s Independence, Protestants of Ukraine were able to establish their own network of education institutions without any governmental financing. Thus best achievements are to be identified and scaled to the whole Ukraine. Faith-based educational institutions founded by the Protestants of Ukraine in their early years applied American educational standards. Level of awareness is still low, thus any research in this area will have scientific novelty by default. The research objective is to identify ways of development among the Protestants on the example of NGO “EATA”. Two possible scenarios are proposed: 1) a preferred way when Agency acquires State and International recognition as agency that is licensed to issue accreditation to educational institutions, and 2) less preferred way one Agency serves inner Christian circles, author argues against that approach.

In today's Indonesian churches there are two types of music in worship, namely: hymnal songs or hymn (which are still used in mainstream Protestant churches) and contemporary Christian songs (used in Pentecostal and Charismatic churches). Nevertheless, contemporary Christian singing began to be accepted by some Protestant Christians and its existence increasingly dominated and urged the hymn. In order for the hymn to not be easily abandoned and felt contemporary, the author offers a new alternative to the creation of the hymn that has based itself on the major-minor mode for centuries. The alternative is the use of church mode, namely the Dorian mode as the basis for the creation or arrangement of a hymn. For this reason, the author tries to present a hymn arrangement for the song "Holy, Holy, Holy" by Reginald Heber in the SATB format in Dorian mode.

Résumé :
Focusses on how since the arrival of Haitians in South Florida since 1979 many of these increasingly joined and converted to Haitian evangelical Protestant churches, and came to disavow the combined Catholic and Vodou beliefs they adhered to. Author points out how this echoes trends in Haiti since the 1970s of increased conversions to evangelical Protestantism, with these localized/Haitianized Protestant churches later also moving to Florida. She further examines the motivations behind and meanings of these conversions, and argues that poor Haitian migrants construe conversion as a rhetoric and set of behaviours for mastering a model of individual, social, and economic success in the US. At the same time, she shows how this Protestant evangelical practice offers converts an escape route from familial and other obligations and interdependence connected to traditional, transnational domestic and ritual ties, that are also spiritually and magically enforced. Author however indicates that while the pastors model for their flock an assertive, separatist disposition, central to Protestantism's historical appeal, combined with a modern, ascetic approach, underneath this is often an instrumental logic aimed at instant money and private ambition. As these traditionally were illicit rewards of sorcery and magic, the pastors are seen by some as renewed and successful sorcerers. Author further examines the conversions relating these to the moral dialectic from Vodou, known as Guinea and Magic, mediating the conflicts between individualism and community, and gives examples of often pragmatic motivations for conversion. She thus concludes that Haitians' interpretations of their conversions are unique in that they are filled with their cultural concerns, images, and morality.

Résumé :
The transcription of biblical Hebrew names may seem a relatively easy subtask of Bible translation, but, in reality, it is a serious challenge, requiring clearly established philological principles, transcription rules, and – with respect to church use – a high degree of willingness to compromise. The paper examines the origins of those forms of biblical Hebrew personal and place names which were borrowed from Greek and Latin and appear in contemporary Hungarian Protestant Bible translations; reiterates a translator’s main dilemma of retaining these familiar name forms or transcribing them based on pronunciation of the original Hebrew forms. Then presents the practical problems stemming from the use of long established name forms in the translation and spelling of the names of biblical characters. The author describes the methods used in the 1975 new Protestant Bible translation and its 1990 and 2014 revised versions, in some cases also quoting relevant examples from the Károli Bible and from its 1908 revised version. The author concludes that Hungarian Protestant Bible translations and their revised versions – in accordance with international and Hungarian ecumenical trends – are firmly moving from the use of traditional name forms towards the usage of name forms transcribed from the Hebrew pronunciation of names. This may pave the way for an ecumenical rapprochement and possibly for the completion of an ecumenical Bible translation.

The author reviews the past and present examples of the diffusion of values in the Christian Churches, i.e., of the Eastern (Orthodox and Unite) and West (Roman Catholic and Protestant). They are portrayed through mutual conversion of temples, incorporation of traditional orthodox iconography in contemporary Roman Catholic churches as well as by adaptation of historic temples for their mutual ecumenical use. The values give testimony to the synthesis of art of both Christian Churches as well as to the return to their ecclesial unity. Apart from a retrospective look at contemporary, post-war buildings of this type the authors’ realizations are also introduced. These examples are representative for the architecture of cultural borderland which attempts to synthesize both the Western and Eastern Christian art. Résumé :
The outline addresses the set of songs included in one of the editions of the Toruń cantional by Petrus Artomius (1601). The small extract of the text provided the opportunity to grasp the range and nature of the changes taking places in the Old Polish language when the Polish culture was affected by the Reformation. For this reason, the author attempted to indicate the origin of the works and to trace the edition modifications introduced in the text with particular emphasis on linguistic alterations. In the cantional there appear texts rooted in the Polish Catholic tradition of religious songs (e.g. XVII, XX, XXI, XXVI, XXVII), translations of Protestant carols of Martin Luther known from earlier songbooks (e.g. XXX, XXXII, XXXVI); however, they are often new, modified versions of the songs. In comparison with the first edition of the cantional, the discussed edition was somewhat reorganized, which may be observed in the editor’s attempt to modernize the language of the songs. On the basis of the presented description of philological- stylistic nature one may conclude that the language of the old Protestant community of Toruń did not differ significantly from the Old Polish language of the time. On the one hand, the texts included in the cantional refer to medieval songs stylistically and linguistically. On the other hand, they illustrate the popularity and universality of Polish songs used in religious practices of Protestants, not only Lutherans.

Abstract The article explores the latent impact of traditional Chinese culture on worship in one Three-Self Patriotic Movement Protestant church in a mid-sized, provincial city in central China. Employing a case study approach, the author visited the church under consideration numerous times over a several-year period and interviewed pastors, evangelists, and members about their worship services. The author’s conclusion is that subtle aspects of the Chinese tradition, and above all Confucianism, can be seen in the worship services of this church. Additionally, the author suggests that these influences can be seen in worship in provincial urban churches around the country and considers the probability and process of change taking place in their worship services.

It cannot be denied that historical figures, when literarized, are also coloured by their respective authors and how they can be found in the literary field and also played a role outside their literary context. The Author would like to assume a literary sociological point of view, and in this contribution the tension between the authority and autonomy of the author is linked to the characters he has created. In this research, the Author focuses on the Flemish hero Jan de Lichte and three authors who have written a work about Jan de Lichte’s gang. He starts with Ernest Ternest from Wetteren. It is interesting to consider for a moment the reputation and the life and work of popular writer Abraham Hans, who was born in (Sint-Maria-)Horebeke in a community now known as the Geuzenhoek, a small Protestant community in at that time predominantly Catholic Flanders. Finally, the Author looks at the role outside the literary field of Louis Paul Boon, who also called himself a tender anarchist, worked for a while as a journalist for the left-wing magazine De Roode Vaan and immediately after the Second World War sympathised with communist ideas.

Therefore, the author conducted a study entitled: "The Concept of State Defense in the Perspective of Islam and Protestant Christianity". The type of research that the authors conducted was library research, namely survey techniques used to collect data and information from various types of materials such as books, newspapers, magazines, journals, theses related to the discussion of this research, and several other works related to researcher this Tian. While the presentation of the data is qualitative. The results of the research findings that have been carried out can be stated as follows: State defense in an Islamic perspective is in Islam, jihad aims to defend, maintain, and also elevate the religion of Allah (Islam). Islam permits jihad or defending the country as long as it is not with war. Where to reject tyranny, to respect places of worship, to guarantee the independence of the homeland, eliminate slander, and guarantee the freedom of everyone to embrace their respective religions. Protestant Christianity explains that the participation of Protestant Christians in defending the country in life, nation and state should always try to make a contribution to the state. Defending the country is synonymous with the values contained as a mandatory action for every citizen. For Islam peace and if the country is good depends on the actions of their people, and always as a guide is the Al-Qur'an and Hadith to make the country better. The Qur'an also explains obeying Allah SWT, Rasulullah and ulil amri according to Allah's teachings. Meanwhile, in the Protestant Christian concept of defending the country that they think that the country is God, the formation of the country is from God, if they submit to the state then submit to God.

The article deals with the main Reformation ideas of Martin Luther that later influenced the building and formation of the fundamental humanitarian values in Europe and further on in the whole world. The main of them are freedom, justice, autonomy, fairness and responsibility, as well as the value foundations of personal identification, which are closely connected with the problem of free will and choice. They were forged in the process of shaping principles of a new faith by Martin Luther, whereon the new Protestant Church was built with its new ethic dissolving all life spheres of its adepts and building a new type of European rationality. Luther is considered a personality that embodies a significant era in the development of Europe: he did not only demonstrate with his own example what the real faith meant, he set a new direction for the development of society based on the new principles of the Protestant Church. The author of the article analyzes social and geopolitical circumstances under which Luther the Great Reformer lived and formed a new Protestant theology.

The author contends that throughout the duration of the present conflict in NorthernIreland, the world has been repeatedly given a one-dimensional image of this culture depicting it as mainly a product of ethnicity and also a reflection of class sentiment and lived experience. As drummer and songwriter of Ruefrex, a musical band internationally renowned for its songs about the Troubles conflict in Northern Ireland, Burgess discusses the need to express Protestant cultural traditions and identity through words and music. Citing Weber’s argument that individuals need to understand the world and their environment and that this understanding is influenced by perceptions of world order and attitudes and interpretations of symbolic systems or structures, the author argues that losing the importance of symbolic structures in relation to actual events will result in failure to understand why communities embrace meaning systems that are centrally informed by symbol and ritual. In his mind, rather than seeking to promote an understanding of Protestant or Catholic reality, it is important to speculate how the practice of difference might be used in developing any kind of reality of co-operation and co-ordination

In Poland, the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century is most often associated with Martin Luther. However, together with Luther, the reforms were introduced into the Church by Ulrich Zwingli in Zurich, while Philip Melanchthon, Luther’s friend and collaborator, was a very important theologian in Germany. It was him who determined the ultimate doctrinal and organizational form of Lutheranism. Melanchthon was a theologian and a humanist, the reformer of German education, author of numerous textbooks widely used in all over Renaissance Europe, including Poland and Lithuania. One of Melanchthon’s major textbooks was Loci communes (1521). In this book, Melanchthon made an attempt to systematize evangelical doctrines. Consequently, it is considered the first evangelical theology textbook and, at the first time, the first work on Protestant dogmas.

From 1998 to 2005, the once left-wing Protestant Dutch broadcasting company VPRO aired 26 episodes of The White Cowboy, including the episode ‘De Kerkgangers’ (‘The Churchgoers’). In this article, the author argues that this episode is an excellent example of the contemporary reception of the 16th century Protestant reformation within the Netherlands at the turn of the millennium. Within the secular context of contemporary Dutch society, the stereotypical world-avoidance and lack of any joie de vivre associated with the strict observants of the Dutch reformation are used to mock Protestantism specifically and Christianity (or even religion altogether) in general. Nevertheless, a more positive interpretation also remains possible if one is able to understand secularism itself as a product of the Christian tradition to begin with.

Résumé :
Abstract The five hundreth anniversary that we commemorated in 2017 is a good opportunity to remind the significance of vocal works by Martin Luther. Creative musical activity of Dr. Martin Luther is somehow in the shadow of his other historically significant activities. It is a well-known fact that he was an outstanding musician who could play lute and could sing. In his household, he constantly played music and sang, while he actively engaged his family in performing music. In performing the reformatory ideas, he was aware of the extremely important role of religious singing, which he started composing since 1523. He is the author of 38 songs – chorales, while at the same time, he is the author of 20 melodies. In most cases, he used the texts of the Psalms. From his chorals the best known is entitled Ein feste Burg is unser Gott – The Fortified Castle is the Lord our God, that became worldwide the anthem of the Protestants. Luther have become an important inspirational source for the next generation of composers, and they culminated in the work of Johann Sebastian Bach, including the works of contemporary Slovak composers – Roman Berger, Víťazoslav Kubička. The prevailing majority of Lutheran chorales is also the part of the Protestant Songbook in Slovakia.

Résumé :
Applying the typology of R. Niebuhr to the Protestant environment of Ukraine is nearly impossible, because despite the preserved faith statements, the level of involvement of Protestants in Ukrainian society has changed significantly. Thus, the usual classification is not efficient due to the dynamics of the social dimension of Protestants and the background of theological conservatism. Author agrees with the proposed paradigm of D. Hollinger, that in any interaction with society there are two dimensions, in the middle of which we can make a certain ranking. The impact can be individual or structural, as well as reactionary or preventive. The following vectors have become especially common among Protestants: 1. Christian relief; 2. Creating alternative Christian institutions; 3. Evangelism, not just a method to introduce beliefs to others, but also as a vehicle of structural changes in society; 4. Prophetic proclamation as a way to react on existing negative trends; 5. Political lobbying with an attempt to prevent the adoption of certain bills, or vice versa, their promotion; 6. Creation of political parties or political groups; 7. Nonviolent resistance; 8. The practice of Christian incarnation as a manifestation of faithfulness to God with the understanding that the attainability of ethical standards is possible only within the Christian community; 9. Individual impact with understanding that Christians hold views and moral (ethical) principles that differ from secular society, however Christians apply those principles, within and outside boundaries of Christendom.

The purpose of this article is to describe only one aspect of the missionary activity of the Orthodox Church - anti-sectarian. The author dwells on the analysis of the legal field in which religious sectarian communities function, the peculiarities of the organization of the Orthodox missionary apparatus and the confrontation between the sectarian and Orthodox missionary directions. Note that the use by the author of the term "sectarianism" is due to specific historical circumstances - in the early twentieth century. Protestant and other religious entities were qualified as sectarian in official literature and official relations.

Résumé :
In the article the author explores some peculiarities of the protestant marriage, its foundations developed by the reform movement at the early 16th century. Marriage occupied a special place in the Luther’s doctrine due to the critique of the Catholic ideal of celibacy and asceticism. The author tries to show the new type of marriage through the prism of the biography of Katharina Luther (maiden name von Bora), an unusual representative of her epoch. Another significant question is how gender roles described in works by Luther, applied to his own family. The research is based on various sources of information: the evidences of the contemporaries, collected in the “Table Talk”, on the private cor-respondence of Luther and his wife with their companions. The author explains a role of a woman as wife and as mother and em-phasizes her opportunities and rights in the new Reformed socie-ty. Therefore, the article evaluates how the marriage alliance be-tween the leader of the Reformation and his wife, which became a role model of marital relationship, influenced the future devel-opment of the institute of family.
