Résumé :
We investigate the propagation properties of circular Airy beams (CABs) with propagational fractional-order optical vortices (OVs). The superposition of the phase singularity and polarization singularity from a vortex vector beam (VVB) plays a significant role in creating a propagational fractional vortex beam. Propagational fractional vortex beams can be considered as a superposition of left and right circularly polarized vortex beams with different integer topological charges (TCs). We study the propagation characteristics of two kinds of propagational fractional vortex CABs, and the results show that both of the two kinds of beams can stably propagate in free space, and they exhibit an “abruptly auto-focusing” property and “self-healing” property during the propagation. The intensity distribution of the first kind of propagational fractional vortex CAB has an odd number of petals (2m + 1), while the second kind of beam has a crescent-shaped intensity distribution. The influence of turbulence on the beam propagation through atmosphere under different turbulence strengths is also numerically studied in this paper. A fractional vortex CAB with an initial radius r0 = 10 mm can retain its shape after propagating 20 m when the atmospheric refractive-index structure constant CN2=0.2×10−12m−2/3. Our results are expected to broaden the application of CABs.

Résumé :
A new comparative propagation property parameter CP suitable to judge the propagation of the interface crack in the cladding part is proposed. The propagation criterion for the crack inclined across the interface is established. The theoretical research on the CPxA and CPxB of this interface crack propagating in the clad and substrate separately is carried out. The propagation law of the interface crack in the cermet cladding part is investigated with an example. The research results show that, within the ranges of the studied parameters, CPxA is bigger than CPxB, and that the crack initially propagates in the clad.

Résumé :
Based on the Snyder and Mitchell model, a closed-form propagation expression of astigmatic sin-Gaussian beams through strongly nonlocal nonlinear media (SNNM) is derived. The evolutions of the intensity distributions and the corresponding wave front dislocations are discussed analytically and numerically. It is generally proved that the light field distribution varies periodically with the propagation distance. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the astigmatism and edge dislocation nested in the initial sin-Gaussian beams greatly influence the pattern configurations and phase singularities during propagation. In particular, it is found that, when the beam parameters are properly selected, a vortex beam with perfect doughnut-shaped profile can be obtained for astigmatic sin-Gaussian beams with two-lobe pattern propagating in SNNM.

Résumé :
Effective and reliable reservoir monitoring is critically important for optimizing oil/gas production and ensuring safe geologic carbon sequestration. It requires an optimal sensor deployment that uses a minimum number of sensors to record the most significant information resulting from reservoir property changes. Conventional monitoring survey designs are typically based on seismic-wavefield illumination analyses, which cannot alone determine the best receiver locations for effective and reliable monitoring of reservoir property changes. We propose a new approach for designing seismic monitoring surveys by analyzing the sensitivities of elastic waves with respect to reservoir geophysical property changes. The method is based on differentiating the elastic-wave equations with respect to geophysical parameters. The resulting sensitivity equations are solved simultaneously with the elastic-wave equations using a finite-difference scheme. Numerical studies confirm that time-lapse seismic survey designs based on elastic-wave sensitivity analysis can be totally different from those based on elastic-wavefield illuminations. For time-lapse seismic monitoring, receivers should be placed at locations where elastic-wave sensitivities are significant. Modeling of elastic-wave sensitivity propagation provides a fundamental tool for effective seismic monitoring survey designs.

The concept of discrete conservation of symplecticity for discretizations of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) for shallow water wave is presented. This property is Endemic and we express that it also leads to exact discrete conservation of momentum and energy for propagation of shallow water wave. This restricted property is stronger than the global property which that synthesis over all spatial framework points leads to distinct symplectic scheme in the time route. Multi-symplectic integrators are earned for propagation of shallow water wave and investigate conservation property for multi-symplectic integrator. Numerical simulations are also offered.

Property of GFRP is naturally dependent on the property of matrix, but receives of temperature effects by external force. Therefore, determination of mechanical property by effect of temperature in GFRP is most crucial factor. In this paper, temperature distribution during crack propagation from temperature change under tensile test was proposed through IR thermography camera. Lock-in thermography method, which is one of technique in IR thermography camera to measure minute change in temperature, was utilized to monitor temperature distribution and change during crack propagation. Method to analyze temperature distribution during crack propagation under tensile test of GFRP via IR thermography camera was suggested. Résumé :
In this study, behaviors of electromagnetic wave propagation in a double-walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT) are investigated theoretically. For this purpose, the effects of carbon nanotube’s inner and outer tubes’ material property parameters (μ, ε) on electromagnetic wave propagation are discussed. The effects of interaction between the carbon nanotube’s inner and outer tubes on the electromagnetic wave propagation are defined. Nonlocal effects of the DWCNT on electromagnetic wave propagation are examined. Besides, the electromagnetic wave propagation frequencies are specifically investigated, taking the DWCNT’s nonlocal effects and material property parameters (ε, µ) into account. When the wavenumber, k, is greater than 1.8 × 1010, the frequencies of the fundamental mode and the second mode converge to 3.554 × 108 Hz. Additionally, the electromagnetic wave propagation frequencies decrease with the increase of the DWCNT’s nonlocal parameter (ν) and decrease with material parameter (D).

Résumé :
The authors introduce new measures of semantic similarity and relatedness for ontological concepts, based on the properties associated to them. They consider two concepts similar if, for some properties they have in common, they also have the same values assigned to these properties. On the other hand, the authors consider two concepts related if they have the same values assigned to different properties. These measures are used in the propagation of user interest values in ontology-based user models to other similar or related concepts in the domain. The authors tested their algorithm in event recommendation domain and in recipe domain and showed that property-based propagation based on similarity outperforms the standard edge-based propagation. Adding relatedness as a criterion for propagation improves diversity without sacrificing accuracy. In addition, assigning a certain relevance to each property improves the accuracy of recommendation. Finally, the property-based spreading activation is effective for cross-domain recommendation.

Austenitic stainless steel shows clear acoustic anisotropy. How to detect and evaluate the material becomes research difficulty and popular problem in acoustic detection field. In the paper, Civa software is applied for simulating ultrasonic wave propagation in austenitic stainless steel cladding layer. The influence of included angle between acoustic wave propagation direction and crystal axis on acoustic wave propagation is studied. The study results show that: the focusing property is good when the included angle is 30°-45°, which is beneficial for ultrasonic testing of cladding layer. When the included angle is greater than 70° or so, actual propagation path of acoustic wave and propagation direction of acoustic wave have certain deviation angle with poor acoustic wave focusing property and rapid acoustic attenuation speed, which is not conducive to acoustic detection of cladding layer.

Résumé :
In this study, the electromagnetic wave propagation behavior of two-dimensional photonic crystal plates with a defect is investigated. For this purpose, the partial differential equation for the electromagnetic wave propagation in various photonic crystal plates containing a defect or not is obtained by using Maxwell’s equations. The defect is also defined in the electromagnetic wave propagation equation appropriately. In order to solve the electromagnetic wave propagation equation, the finite differences method is used. The material property parameters of the photonic crystal plates are determined with respect to the defects. Accordingly, the effects of material property parameters on electromagnetic wave propagation frequencies, phase velocities, and group velocities are examined. The effects of the size and position of the defects on the electromagnetic wave propagation frequencies are also discussed. The highest electromagnetic wave propagation fundamental frequency value obtained from the analyses performed is 1.198 Hz. This fundamental frequency value is obtained for the electromagnetic wave propagation in the t-shaped photonic crystal plate. Electromagnetic field distribution maps for the fundamental frequencies of the photonic crystal plates whose electromagnetic wave propagation behaviors are examined are obtained with the ANSYS package program based on the finite differences time-domain (FDTD) method.

Résumé :
Abstract The Airy beam shows its peculiar property of self-healing which attracts lots of attentions to do the researches about the higher dimensional nondiffraction beams which can apply to lots of aspects to doing researches. We demonstrate the self-healing property of Airy beam which displays similar profiles both in weak and strong turbulence in atmosphere. Highly similarity has been shown when the propagation distance is not very long. The self-healing exhibits its own profile in strong turbulence and stability in weak turbulence respectively with the longer propagation distance. However, the variation of exponential truncation factors and the transverse scales would not change the conclusion that the self-healing property would vanish at the same propagation distance both in weak and strong turbulence. It means that they would reach zero intensity plane with the same self-healing critical distance zs and would not entirely disappear until reach the same disappearance critical distance zd . This study provide a method to enhance the self-healing property of Airy beams.

Résumé :
In situ SEM experimental system is employed to investigate the mechanical characteristics and the fracture behavior of 91W–6.3Ni–2.7Fe tungsten alloys. The crack initiation and propagation of tungsten alloys under tensile loadings are examined. Multi-particle unit cell models containing the microstructure characteristics of tungsten alloys are established. Fixed-point iteration method is firstly used for the multi-particle unit cell's boundary condition. By adopting the method, real displacement constrained conditions are applied on the multi-particle unit cell models. The mechanical and fracture behaviors of tungsten alloys under tensile loading are simulated. The effects of tungsten content, particle shape, particle size, and interface strength on the mechanical properties of tungsten alloys are analyzed. The relationship between the mechanical behaviors and the microstructure parameters is studied. A good agreement is obtained between the experimental results and the numerical predictions, verifying the rationality of the FE models using the fixed-point iteration method.

A novel enriched finite element method (EFEM) was employed to analyze the transient wave propagation problems. In the present method, the traditional finite element approximation was enriched by employing the appropriate interpolation covers. We mathematically and numerically showed that the present EFEM possessed the important monotonic convergence property with the decrease of the used time steps for transient wave propagation problems when the unconditional stable Newmark time integration scheme was used for time integration. This attractive property markedly distinguishes the present EFEM from the traditional FEM for transient wave propagation problems. Two typical numerical examples were given to demonstrate the capabilities of the present method.

Résumé :
In this paper we prove the propagation of chaos property for an ensemble of interacting neurons subject to independent Brownian noise. The propagation of chaos property means that in the large network size limit, the neurons behave as if they are probabilistically independent. The model for the internal dynamics of the neurons is taken to be that of Wilson and Cowan, and we consider there to be multiple different populations. The synaptic connections are modeled with a nonlinear “electrical” model. The nonlinearity of the synaptic connections means that our model lies outside the scope of classical propagation of chaos results. We obtain the propagation of chaos result by taking advantage of the fact that the mean-field equations are Gaussian, which allows us to use Borell’s Inequality to prove that its tails decay exponentially.

In this study, metal inert gas welding (MIG) was applied to 4 mm thick 6005A-T6 aluminum alloy welding. Compared with other parts, the hardness of the weld zone (WZ) was the lowest, about 67 HV. There was the Softening in WZ, which might make WZ the weakest zone. Then, fatigue tests were carried out on MIG welded joints. All the fatigue specimens fractured at the weld toe of the lap joint, and the fracture was characterized by a cleavage fracture. Crack closure induced by oxide was observed during the steady propagation of the fatigue crack. Impurities hindered crack propagation, changed the direction of crack propagation, and appeared in stepped fatigue strip distribution morphology; in the process of the main crack propagation, the initiation and propagation of small cracks were easily restricted and hindered by the main crack, which slowed down the propagation rate and even stopped the propagation directly.

Résumé :
The backpressure propagation mode accompanied by shock-train evolution is investigated numerically in a rectangular duct with an open space. On this basis, the balance mechanism and parametric effects of heat transfer and skin friction for backpressure propagation are revealed to understand the nature of force competition better. As a result, the backpressure propagation mode can be classified into two different flow processes with increased backpressure. In addition, balance property mechanism reveals that both the momentum inside the boundary layer and the shear force which transfers the momentum from the outer core flow to boundary layer are combined to resist the adverse pressure gradient. Further, parametric effect indicates that varying wall temperatures and roughness heights lead to different degrees of changes in balance property. According to quantitative results, both wall temperature and roughness height decrease the local boundary-layer momentum at the starting point of original pressure rise and thus the local adverse pressure gradient wins the force competition. In the subsequently continuous flow, the adverse pressure gradient continues to propagate upstream and then is retarded gradually by the boundary layer with a fuller velocity profile until a new force balance is generated.

Résumé :
How to accurately calculate the sound field formed by acoustic lenses is an important basis for the design of acoustic lens transducers. The radiation sound field distribution of the physical model of acoustics lens is simulated by numerical methods, including the ray propagation method and the wave propagation method. The ray propagation method can only get the focal length without considering the wave characteristics property, while the wave propagation method takes into account the amplitude and phase factors of the wave, and by which the distribution of the whole sound field can be got. The relationship between the property of refractive wave and incident angle of incident wave is analyzed, and theoretical results of the distribution of the focal field are obtained. The actual sound field of the real transducer is measured by acoustic field scanning system, and the measured results of focal length and focal area are obtained. The comparison and analysis of the numerical data and measured data show that the wave propagation method can be used to predict the focus field of concave spherical acoustic lens transducer accurately and effectively.

Résumé :
The Coulomb gauge has a long history and many uses. It is especially useful in bound state applications. An important feature of this gauge is that the matter fields have an infrared finite propagator in an on-shell renormalisation scheme. This is, however, only the case if the renormalisation point is chosen to be the static point on the mass-shell, p=(m,0,0,0). In this letter we show how to extend this key property of the Coulomb gauge to an arbitrary relativistic renormalisation point. This is achieved through the introduction of a new class of gauges of which the Coulomb gauge is a limiting case. A physical explanation for this result is given.

Résumé :
AbstractIn this study, the fatigue crack propagation in composite material is investigated by experimental result. When another material exists at fatigue crack propagation in case of composite, the durability against fatigue crack is smaller or greater than in case of matrix without another material. As another material is composite material, it refers to steel or material. Another material influences the crack propagation. As the experimental results can be agreed with simulation data, all experimental data in this study are verified. These experimental and analysis results can be applied into real field effectively. The estimation of safety design and life will be of great value industrially.

Résumé :
Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are nowadays applied as the most efficient methods in the majority of machine learning approaches, including data-driven modeling for assessment of the toxicity of chemicals. We developed a combined neural network methodology that can be used in the scope of new approach methodologies (NAMs) assessing chemical or drug toxicity. Here, we present QSAR models for predicting the physical and biochemical properties of molecules of three different datasets: aqueous solubility, acute fish toxicity toward fat head minnow, and bio-concentration factors. A novel neural network modeling method is developed by combining two neural network algorithms, namely, the counter-propagation modeling strategy (CP-ANN) with the back-propagation-of-errors algorithm (BPE-ANN). The advantage is a short training time, robustness, and good interpretability through the initial CP-ANN part, while the extension with BPE-ANN improves the precision of predictions in the range between minimal and maximal property values of the training data, regardless of the number of neurons in both neural networks, either CP-ANN or BPE-ANN.

Résumé :
For the free-space optical (FSO) communication system, the spatial coherence of a laser beam is influenced obviously as it propagates through the atmosphere. This loss of spatial coherence limits the degree to which the laser beam is collimated or focused, resulting in a significant decrease in the power level of optical communication and radar systems. In this work, the analytic expressions of wave structure function for plane and spherical wave propagation through anisotropic non-Kolmogorov turbulence in a horizontal path are derived. Moreover, the new expressions for spatial coherence radius are obtained considering different scales of atmospheric turbulence. Using the newly obtained expressions for the spatial coherent radius, the effects of the inner scales and the outer scales of the turbulence, the power law exponent, and the anisotropic factor are analyzed. The analytical simulation results show that the wave structure functions are greatly influenced by the power law exponent α , the anisotropic factor ζ , the turbulence strength σ ~ R 2 , and the turbulence scales. Moreover, the spatial coherence radiuses are also significantly affected by the anisotropic factor ζ and the turbulence strength σ ~ R 2 , while they are gently influenced by the power law exponent α and the inner scales of the optical waves.

Résumé :
Thermal fatigue property of a directionally solidified nickel-base superalloy with different notch radius was studied. The results show that cycle numbers of crack initiation increase and resistance of thermal fatigue decreases with the rise of notch radius at the upper temperature of 1050°C. Thermal fatigue crack initiates at carbide or oxidized cavity. The join of oxidized cavity makes crack propagate. The propagation rate lowers with the increasing notch radius. Crack propagation direction is along <110> direction in {111} plane. The stress concentration drops and thermal fatigue property improves with the increase of notched radius.

Résumé :
Light propagation in human dentin exhibits a strong directional dependence featuring the long-known optical magnification property. We hypothesized that this anisotropic effect is caused by multiple scattering at the dentin tubules, and not by fiberoptic effects, as had been previously assumed. We performed measurements of the transmitted intensity from dentin disks and compared them with Monte Carlo simulations of light propagation in dentin, considering the scattering by the tissue’s microstructure. We found that the optical anisotropy of dentin can be fully explained with this model. We concluded that the magnification property of dentin is due to multiple scattering by the dental microstructure.

Résumé :
A numerical method to simulate the crack propagation is presented in this paper. The FEM is used to estimate the influence of the material discontinuous zone on the propagation behavior of the crack placed in close to it in the matrix. The crack propagation paths in the matrix with different material discontinuous zone are simulated. The simulation results show that the crack propagation path will deviate toward the material discontinuous zone when the crack grows in closed to it and the property of the material discontinuous zone influences the deflection angle and the crack propagation rate.

Résumé :
The impact specimens with different hydrogen contents were solution treated at 540±3°C for 12h; water quenched at 60-100°C; and aged at 165±1°C for 6h. The impact test was carried out at Roell450 pendulum impact testing machine. The impact test results show that the impact energy has strong relation with the hydrogen content. The total absorption energy increases with the increasing of hydrogen content. The crack propagation energy Avp and present larger proportion than the initial crack energy Avi in the total absorption energy Av. The number of the pinholes increases and the pinholes turn from smaller irregular ones into sub-circular shape ones. The specimen with irregular sub-circular pinholes has larger KI, and has more crack propagation resistance.

Résumé :
Based on the fracture mechanics theory and fracture surface topography analysis (FRASTA) method, the interior fracture property of a bearing steel in very high cycle regime was studied by means of rotary bending fatigue test. As a result, this bearing steel represents the duplex S-N curves characteristic, where the interior inclusion-induced fracture is the predominant fracture mode in very high cycle regime. The rough granular bright facet (GBF) area corresponding to smaller inclusion is usually formed in the lifetime larger than 106 cycles, whose formation progress can be interpreted as the slow crack nucleation based on decohesion of spherical carbide from the matrix. The fatigue property in the fish-eye region outside of GBF can be interpreted as the stable crack propagation progress and that outside of fish-eye is instable crack propagation progress. The stress intensity factor ranges of GBF and fish-eye, ΔKGBF and ΔKfish-eye, can be regarded as the threshold values of controlling stable propagation and instable propagation of interior crack, respectively.

Résumé :
An effective structural health monitoring system fully exploits the flexibility offered by the 3D printing process by integrating a smart structural health monitoring technology inside the 3D-printed components. The system relies on the propagation of pressure waves with constant propagation speed through circular capillaries embedded in the structure. The nature of these waves seems to be determinant for the accuracy of the crack localization system. To achieve a better physical understanding of the nature of the propagating waves through the capillaries, computational fluid dynamics simulations are performed and compared to experimental results obtained with a self-built test setup. The presence of propagating shock waves is observed in the simulations and experiments, as well as a complex reflection mechanism around the leak location. Shock waves show the characteristic of not propagating at a constant velocity. This property complicates the actual localization system. To solve this, the constant velocity assumption should be replaced with the effective velocity evolution to increase the localization accuracy. The amplitude of the shock wave is attenuated with propagating distance, which proves that the effect of friction plays an important role and can, in turn, influence the localization system.
