Résumé :
This article aims to report the transition from intuitive to intentional projective activities in design recorded in the visual modes of sketchbook to analyze the metacognitive processes of design students. Phenomenography was used as an empirical sampling method to diagnose the sketchbooks of industrial design and graphic design students. The observation criteria focused on describing the metacognitive characteristics of the students with respect to the way they recorded their ideas visually, which showed design-specific projective actions. This research demonstrated and codified how students externalize intentional approaches in their sketchbook iterations, which can be grouped into three representation strategies: technical, methodological, and reflective; they are related to their experiences in projective activity. Consequently, we propose a new category called metacognitive transcendence, which refers to a strategy for controlling and regulating cognitive processes to transform an intuitive action into an intentional action mediated by a cognitive artifact: the design sketchbook. Three ways of metacognitive transcendence are suggested: instrumental (technical aspects), procedural (related to projection), and comprehensive (own reflection about the project itself).

The mathematical describing of the production process in mechanical engineer work in the euclidean space model and the base of the analytical describing of the projective space model is practically identical in the form, which makes it reasonable to discuss of the production geometry to approach of the projective geometrical negotiation in the . It is a fact that in one of the cases, using the approach of a projective geometrical connection and the mathematical-kinematical model resulted in expansion in the field of production precision, specifically considering the examination of the production of the conical worm by grinding wheel. The abstraction of the production geometry on projective space model has a few results in case of conical worms. The elliptical errors in production of the conical worm with arched or anything profile by grinding wheel can be eliminated by this method way to achieve the constant pitch, the torsion of profile and others.

Résumé :
We present a novel, fast differentiable simulator for soft-body learning and control applications. Existing differentiable soft-body simulators can be classified into two categories based on their time integration methods: Simulators using explicit timestepping schemes require tiny timesteps to avoid numerical instabilities in gradient computation, and simulators using implicit time integration typically compute gradients by employing the adjoint method and solving the expensive linearized dynamics. Inspired by Projective Dynamics ( PD ), we present Differentiable Projective Dynamics ( DiffPD ), an efficient differentiable soft-body simulator based on PD with implicit time integration. The key idea in DiffPD is to speed up backpropagation by exploiting the prefactorized Cholesky decomposition in forward PD simulation. In terms of contact handling, DiffPD supports two types of contacts: a penalty-based model describing contact and friction forces and a complementarity-based model enforcing non-penetration conditions and static friction. We evaluate the performance of DiffPD and observe it is 4–19 times faster compared with the standard Newton’s method in various applications including system identification, inverse design problems, trajectory optimization, and closed-loop control. We also apply DiffPD in a reality-to-simulation ( real-to-sim ) example with contact and collisions and show its capability of reconstructing a digital twin of real-world scenes.

Résumé :
Since subjects are often uncomfortable disclosing sensitive information, questions gauging respondent reaction to survey questions about drug abuse may aid in the interpretation of responses. Such debriefing questions can be worded subjectively, i.e., asking subjects about their own reactions to questions, or projectively, i.e., asking subjects about their perceptions of the reactions of others to questions. Using data from a study employing both types of debriefing questions, we examined whether question wording made any difference. We evaluated the extent to which drug reporting was associated with respondent reaction to the survey and whether reactions varied by type of debriefing question. A factor analysis of debriefing questions appended to an experimental household survey on drug abuse yielded factors reflecting distinct subjective and projective dimensions. Analyses suggested that debriefing question wording does make a difference with respect to respondent reaction. Contrary to expectations, analyses suggested that those reporting drug use expressed less comfort on subjectively worded items and more comfort on projectively worded items. Subjects who self-administered their survey also reported lower levels of subjective comfort. The projective measures derived from analyses were associated with three demographic variables: Younger subjects reported higher levels of projective ease than older subjects. Those with some college reported higher levels of projective ease than those with the least amount of formal education. African-Americans reported lower levels of projective ease than White/Other subjects. Implications for the design, interpretation, and analysis of drug use surveys are considered.

Abstract The resolutions and maximal sets of compatible resolutions of all 2-(120,8,1) designs arising from maximal (120,8)-arcs, and the 2-(52,4,1) designs arising from previously known maximal (52,4)-arcs, as well as some newly discovered maximal (52,4)-arcs in the known projective planes of order 16, are computed. It is shown that each 2-(120,8,1) design associated with a maximal (120,8)-arc is embeddable in a unique way in a projective plane of order 16. This result suggests a possible strengthening of the Bose–Shrikhande theorem about the embeddability of the complement of a hyperoval in a projective plane of even order. The computations of the maximal sets of compatible resolutions of the 2-(52,4,1) designs associated with maximal (52,4)-arcs show that five of the known projective planes of order 16 contain maximal arcs whose associated designs are embeddable in two nonisomorphic planes of order 16.

Résumé :
This study demonstrates the modified projective synchronization in Chen-Lee chaotic system. The variable structure control technology is used to design the synchronization controller with input nonlinearity. Based on Lyapunov stability theory, a nonlinear controller and some generic sufficient conditions can be obtained to guarantee the modified projective synchronization, including synchronization, antisynchronization, and projective synchronization in spite of the input nonlinearity. The numerical simulation results show that the synchronization and antisynchronization can coexist in Chen-Lee chaotic systems. It demonstrates the validity and feasibility of the proposed controller.

A function projective synchronization is defined to synchronize two different systems up to a scaling function matrix f with different initial values. The function projective synchronization is more general than the complete synchronization, the generalized projective synchronization and the modified projective synchronization. The corresponding framework of synchronization is set up and used to achieve a function projective synchronization design of two different chaotic systems: the unified chaotic system and the Rössler system. Résumé :
Traditional four-position mechanism synthesis focuses on the poles corresponding to four displacements of a rigid body. From these poles equations for the center-point and circle-point curves are developed. However, if a pole is infinite (the associated displacement is a pure translation), the established derivations for the pole curve equation break down. One can eliminate this problem by expressing the pole curve equation in the projective plane, because all points, including points at infinity, have finite homogeneous coordinates. In this paper, the pole curve equation is derived in the projective plane. This projection derivation is an analytic expression of Alt’s graphical construction of the pole curve. The pole curve is the intersection of a pair of projective pencils of circles (one pencil for opposite sides of the opposite-pole quadrilateral) which are defined by the homogeneous coordinates of the poles. The resulting equations are applied to several problems in the synthesis of four-bar linkages. In addition the rotation curves, the locus of displacement poles for a four-bar linkage, are computed for linkages with sliding joints.

Résumé :
We present a GPU algorithm for deformable simulation. Our method offers good computational efficiency and penetration-free guarantee at the same time, which are not common with existing techniques. The main idea is an algorithmic integration of projective dynamics (PD) and incremental potential contact (IPC). PD is a position-based simulation framework, favored for its robust convergence and convenient implementation. We show that PD can be employed to handle the variational optimization with the interior point method e.g., IPC. While conceptually straightforward, this requires a dedicated rework over the collision resolution and the iteration modality to avoid incorrect collision projection with improved numerical convergence. IPC exploits a barrier-based formulation, which yields an infinitely large penalty when the constraint is on the verge of being violated. This mechanism guarantees intersection-free trajectories of deformable bodies during the simulation, as long as they are apart at the rest configuration. On the downside, IPC brings a large amount of nonlinearity to the system, making PD slower to converge. To mitigate this issue, we propose a novel GPU algorithm named A-Jacobi for faster linear solve at the global step of PD. A-Jacobi is based on Jacobi iteration, but it better harvests the computation capacity on modern GPUs by lumping several Jacobi steps into a single iteration. In addition, we also re-design the CCD root finding procedure by using a new minimum-gradient Newton algorithm. Those saved time budgets allow more iterations to accommodate stiff IPC barriers so that the result is both realistic and collision-free. Putting together, our algorithm simulates complicated models of both solids and shells on the GPU at an interactive rate or even in real time.

Résumé :
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to argue for the reflective use of visual techniques in qualitative inter-viewing and suggests using visuals not only as projective techniques to elicit answers, but also as facilitation techniques throughout the interview process. Design/methodology/approach – By reflecting on their own research projects in organization and management studies, the authors develop a practical approach to visual interviewing – making use of both projective and facilitation techniques. The paper concludes by discussing the limitations of visualization techniques, and suggesting directions for future research on visually enhanced interviewing. Findings – The integration of projective and facilitation techniques enables the interviewer to build rapport with the respondent(s), and to elicit deeper answers by providing cognitive stimulation. In the course of the interview, such an integrative approach brings along further advantages, most notably focusing attention, maintaining interaction, and fostering the co-construction of knowledge between the interviewer and the interviewee(s). Originality/value – This paper is reflective of what is currently occurring in the field of qualitative interviewing, and presents a practical approach for the integration of visual projection and facilitation in qualitative interviews.

Résumé :
In this paper, a nonlinear state observer control strategy is developed for projective self-synchronization of the fractional-order chaotic attractors of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) system. The mathematical model of PMSM system in a smooth fractional-order form is derived by using the fractional derivative theory. A state observer control design can achieve the full-state projective synchronization of the fractional-order PMSM (FO-PMSM) system without the limitation of partial-linearity. Global stability and asymptotic synchronization between the outputs of drive system and response system can be obtained. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

Furthermore, the scaling factor can be adjusted arbitrarily in due course of control without degrading the controllability. Finally, feasibility of the technique is illustrated for the unified chaotic system.

Résumé :
The modern dynamic and fast-paced way of life, the provocative environment, urbanization and the new priorities in our interaction with the surrounding world, require not only the creation but also the effective deepening of the environmental competence of Adolescents from preschool age. This, on the other hand, shows the current issue, for educators as well as psychologists, of examining the ecological competence of preschool children.Considering the antagonism in the relationships "human - society - nature”, we believe that it is entirely appropriate to draw the following conclusion: To date, pedagogical science faces the difficult, but necessary task, to create and approve methodologies for the study of the environmental competence of children at pre-school age. This article examines the projection methodologies as a reliable and valuable component of pedagogical diagnostics. It is the projection methodologies that provoke impulsive associations in the studied children, which allows to make a more accurate judgment in the diagnostics of the studied area. Not coincidentally, prof. G. Bizhkov summarizes that “Pedagogical diagnostics has no reason not to focus on a wider use of these methods, despite the fact that they rarely lead to the display of coefficients and do not offer great opportunities to use more complex statistical methods”[2].The occurring theoretical and methodological analysis allows us to deduce that, to date, pre-school pedagogy is missing the methodologies that examine the environmental competence of children at pre-school age. This is precisely why the article proposed the standardized version of the projective methodology for investigating the ecological competence of pre-school children. The scientific-research goal of our methodology is to investigate the emotional intelligence of the child that affects the feeling of experiencing contact with the environment (as a habitat for all living creatures). The suggested diagnostic procedure is a modification of the Index of Compatibility for Children and Adolescents, Brenda K. Bryant. We believe that the results obtained from the projective methodology proposed by us could effectively serve to determine the ecological competence of pre-school children.

Résumé :
Metamodels have been widely used in engineering design to facilitate analysis and optimization of complex systems that involve computationally expensive simulation programs. The accuracy of metamodels is directly related to the experimental designs used. Optimal Latin hypercube designs are frequently used and have been shown to have good space-filling and projective properties. However, the high cost in constructing them limits their use. In this paper, a methodology for creating novel Latin hypercube designs via translational propagation and successive local enumeration algorithm (TPSLE) is developed without using formal optimization. TPSLE algorithm is based on the inspiration that a near optimal Latin Hypercube design can be constructed by a simple initial block with a few points generated by algorithm SLE as a building block. In fact, TPSLE algorithm offers a balanced trade-off between the efficiency and sampling performance. The proposed algorithm is compared to two existing algorithms and is found to be much more efficient in terms of the computation time and has acceptable space-filling and projective properties.

Résumé :
Investigations into the management of turn-taking have typically focussed on pitch and other prosodic phenomena, particularly pitch-accents. Here, non-pitch phonetic features and their role in turn-taking are described. Through sustained phonetic and interactional analysis of a naturally occurring, 12-minute long telephone call between two adult speakers of British English, sets of talk-projecting and turn-projecting features are identified. Talk-projecting features include the avoidance of durational lengthening, articulatory anticipation, continuation of voicing, the production of talk in maximally close proximity to a preceding point of possible turn-completion, and the reduction of consonants and vowels. Turn-projecting features include the converse of each of the talk-projecting features, and two other distinct features: release of plosives at the point of possible turn-completion, and the production of audible outbreaths. We show that features of articulatory and phonatory quality and duration are relevant factors in the design and treatment of talk as talk- or turn-projective.

Résumé :
In this study, we developed a computer-aided product design method for goblet styling design based on two methods. The first was parametric design derived from an adjustable cam mechanism, which was used for shape generation, and the second was Kansei engineering, which was used for shape evaluation. In the shape generation method, motion curves from an adjustable cam were used. Designers can collect feature point data from existing products to define the boundary conditions of adjustable cam motion equations; furthermore, adjustable motion curves allow parametric design. Through adjusting a single parameter, motion curves were changed to be used as projective curves for the styling design of goblets. Then, a coordinate transformation method was applied to support the three-dimensional styling design of goblets. In the shape evaluation method, some goblet stylings were regularly selected to determine adjective degrees by production design experts. Adjective degrees for goblets that had not been selected were determined through interpolation. Market demand was defined as the preference of customers for specific adjective degrees for goblets.

Résumé :
The article analyzes the connection between some forming relevant tendencies and the newest cultural practices, the development of which is due to economical, technical and social context. Such features as mass character, consumerism, innovativeness, integrality, media character, network and information unity, fundamentally transform the image of civilization and people’s lifestyle. Human projective activity vectors are explored with terminological tools of cultural anthropology and civilizational movement dominants defined by modern thinkers. Evolution of language and aims of substantial practices are showed and new architectural and design styles, like recycling-, pop-, eco-, recreational, motion-, media-design and so on, are marked and characterized. Modern phase of art’s development, that integrates it with other cultural practices, such as science, trade, production, communication, medicine, show-business, tourism, etc., which change its forms and nature (media-art, video-art, transmission-art, technological art (electronic, robot- and genomic-art, internet-art). All these types of architectural, design and artistic activity exist and are fulfilled in kind of intensive fusion, organizing and fundamentally changing human’s habitat. The variety of design styles are strongly connected today with the commitment to unify form-creating intentions, that had been disconnected during the movement of social progress, which means conformity with modernity’s character and requirements while maintaining ontological basis that gives a human sense of home and self-identity. Designer practices that implement communicative interactive potential in projectivity while keeping spaces alive and human are able to perform this harmony. Hence, exploration of features and vectors of the embodied in real and virtual substance projective activity gives a deeper understanding of the sense of civilizational transformations and their connection with human’s substantive dimensions.

Résumé :
In the context of multiple view geometry, images of static scenes are modeled as linear projections from a projective space ℙ3 to a projective plane ℙ2 and, similarly, videos or images of suitable dynamic or segmented scenes can be modeled as linear projections from ℙk to ℙh, with k > h ≥ 2. In those settings, the projective reconstruction of a scene consists in recovering the position of the projected objects and the projections themselves from their images, after identifying many enough correspondences between the images. A critical locus for the reconstruction problem is a configuration of points and of centers of projections, in the ambient space, where the reconstruction of a scene fails. Critical loci turn out to be suitable algebraic varieties. In this paper we investigate those critical loci which are hypersurfaces in high dimension complex projective spaces, and we determine their equations. Moreover, to give evidence of some practical implications of the existence of these critical loci, we perform a simulated experiment to test the instability phenomena for the reconstruction of a scene, near a critical hypersurface.

Résumé :
Cluster modified projective synchronization of two community networks with nonidentical nodes is studied in this paper. Each network has a unique dynamics and its clusters have different parameter sets which could make their dynamics chaotic or periodic for instance. Therefore, we are dealing with varieties of dynamics in these clusters. By introducing an adaptive control gain in our controller design and using Lyapunov stability theory, we show that two community networks can reach to the synchronized state having arbitrary matrix scaling factor between corresponding nodes of the networks. Moreover, using this matrix we can observe different synchronization regimes simultaneously in each pair of corresponding nodes.

Résumé :
As helical surfaces, in their many and varied forms, are finding more and more applications in engineering, new approaches to their efficient design and manufacture are desired. To that end, the helical projection method that uses curvilinear projection lines to map a space object to a plane is examined in this paper, focusing on its mathematical model and characteristics in terms of graphical representation of helical objects. A number of interesting projective properties are identified in regard to straight lines, curves, and planes, and then the method is further investigated with respect to screws. The result shows that the helical projection of a cylindrical screw turns out to be a Jordan curve, which is determined by the screw's axial profile and number of flights. Based on the projection theory, a practical approach to the modeling of screws and helical surfaces is proposed and illustrated with examples, and its possible application in screw manufacturing is discussed.
