Future and sporadic historical interventions did not allowe time to spare the very high profile of one of them: Rinaldo Corso.
From the (school) basement to the web: proposals for teaching language variation The rich documentation preserved in the school archives has elements is very interesting for the history of italian language and for teaching italian. Through these texts students develop the awareness of working for a common good. The “Giornali della classe” of the elementary teachers constitute an opportunity for teaching variation and for reflection on the language, based on the direct experience of sources “dal basso” taken from one's own territory. This paper illustrates the theoretical references and some proposals relating to the use of non-literary sources for teaching Italian and described the structure, contents and linguistic and stylistic characteristics of the “Giornali” in the first half of the twentieth century. The article then presents some educational proposals that use the web, with multimedia and multimodal products, activities on speech, writing and the interaction between different systems. Texts can be transcribed (also for the reconstruction of scholastic and local memory and with other schools, trhough crowdsourcing) by students of various school cycles. Workshop, such as the one commented for a middle school, can be conducted with experiences of reflection on the different levels of analysis and with writing activities.

Socio-linguistic profiles of Italian ‘versions’: is classical translanguese a subcode? This article deals with the variety of Italian used in translation from classical languages – the so-called ‘classical translanguese’ –, analyzing its linguistic and sociolinguistic properties and arguing for its inclusion in the diasystem of contemporary Italian as a subcode (Berruto, 1987). Characterized by a high degree of formality and formalization, translanguese marks an opposite trend on all axes of socio-linguistic variation with respect to the current re-standardization process of Italian, typically oriented to accommodate sub-standard traits. The paper is articulated as follows: paragraph 1 contains an introduction in which the notion of ‘classic translanguese’ is framed; paragraph 2 gives a socio-functional profile, clarifying which circumstances determine its emergence; paragraph 3 identifies its peculiar linguistic features; paragraph 4 argues that translanguese should be considered a subcode of the Italian diasystem and paragraph 5 contains brief conclusions; finally, paragraph 6 compares the properties of translanguese and neo-standard Italian.

Résumé :
The article presents provisions that develop the linguistic personality theory, which is actively developed in Russian linguistics. The material, used for research, is two autobiographical works and political speeches of the 44th US President Barack Obama. In this work, within the framework of the cognitive-discursive approach, which made it possible to analyze the key concepts of B. Obama’s linguistic profile, the hierarchies of meanings and values characteristic of the politician’s worldview in different periods of his life were identified. It is proved that the linguistic profile of a politician is characterized not only by the level structure, but also by the dynamics of its conceptual and discursive components. The article traces the change in the concept sphere of B. Obama based on the results of a study of concepts identified in his works over 20 years: 1995 to 2015. Based on the methodology developed by the authors, the key concepts of the politician’s linguistic profile were identified. It is shown that the UNITY concept is central in Barack Obama’s speeches. Along with considering the multidimensionality of the linguistic profile in structural terms, the authors of the article pay attention to the dynamics of the politician’s linguistic profile both in chronological and conceptual terms. It is proved that B. Obama’s linguistic profile is undergoing changes, which consist in the dynamics of linguistic and mental representations. The vision of the multidimensionality of the linguistic personality proposed in the article is an interesting direction of the development of the linguistic personality theory.

Résumé :
This article deals with the phenomenon of overregularization in a language already extremely regular, i.e. Esperanto, in children who are learning it as their mother tongue together with one or two other national languages. It consists of an analysis of the diaries kept by Esperanto-speaking parents, tracing the development of five children who were brought up speaking Esperanto as one of their two or three mother-tongues. The children were all of European origin, and their ages ranged from one to five years. The different forms of overregularization have been subdivided into three levels of complexity based on the number and type of morpheme compositions used, and the degree of semantic elaboration. Detailed comments are provided on the forms and meanings of the various examples representing each level, showing the correlation between the age of the children and the growing complexity of the forms. This study can be seen as a first step towards a more systematic analysis of the typologies of overregularization specific to this category of early bilingual children and a better understanding of their language development profile.

The article characterizes the sources of the historical dictionary of linguistic terms. The source base for the study of the evolution of Ukrainian linguistic terminology includes secondary sources, divided into such groups: 1) grammars and textbooks; 2) dictionaries and encyclopedias; 3) monographs and scientific articles on linguistic issues. The concept of “linguistic profile of the source” is used to describe the linguistic source of the historical dictionary of linguistic terms. The conceptualization process as a cognitive mechanism of the meaning formation is based on speech operations that a person uses in language usage. Determinant in the perception of information is the phenomenon of attention, which has several designations in cognitive linguistics: highlighting, perspectivization, profiling, focusing. The linguistic conceptualization of the cognitive profiling operation is based on the thesis that a person has the cognitive ability to perceive, interpret and describe the same reference situation differently, using different linguistic means. It is because a person chooses the most important and significant information for him at this moment from all other. Terms figure and background are used to describe the perceptual connection between the object of focus and the rest of the perceptual field. The links between terms figure and background at first were described by the Danish Gestalt psychologist E. Rubin. The concept of a linguistic profile of source is used to focus the researches attention on those aspects of the analyzed sources that are important for studying the evolution of the linguistic term. The following key points are I. “External” criticism of the source. 1. Time of the source creation. 2. Place of the source creation. 3. The historical and cultural and linguistic situation in the region of the source creation. 4. The author of the source, its age, education, worldview, etc. 5. Motives and circumstances of the source creation. 6. Estimation of the source in linguistic works. 7. Works that are the basis of the analyzed source. “Internal” source criticism. 1. Complete coverage of language tiers. 2. The terms that denote the linguistic concepts, their hierarchical organization. 3. The author’s orientation on the specific Ukrainian / borrowed vocabulary to describe linguistic concepts. 4. Features of the usage of lexical units to denote the linguistic concepts in the source text, their paradigmatics and syntagmatics. This article is modelled the linguistic profile of I.H. Verkhratskyi’s works. The analysis of linguistic sources by these parameters makes it possible to present the history of a linguistic term in a linguistic text, taking into account its contextual environment and the richness of syntagmatic and paradigmatic connections. The linguistic profile of the source/works is an actual basis of dictionary articles of historical dictionaries of linguistic terms of different genres. Keywords: linguistic term, historical dictionary of linguistic terms, linguistic source studies, profiling, linguistic profile of a source, language personality.

Resumo: The objective of this article is to outline a discursive ethos profile from the meaning effects instituted by linguistic elements in two songs by the Brazilian singer, violinist and songwriter Nando Reis. For this purpose, two of the singer’s musical career albums were selected, being one from his career in the group Titãs and the other from his solo career. Subsequently, one song was randomly selected from each album and the linguistic mechanisms that possibly enhanced the speaker’s self-image construction were identified and analyzed. Finally, the discursive ethos profile that emerges from linguistic materialities was interpreted. In order to achieve such objective, the theoretical assumptions from the Linguistics of Enunciation were used as basis, mainly from Émile Benveniste’s theory and his definitions of “language”, “enunciation” and “subjectivity”. Moreover, other theoretical branches were adopted for the concept of ethos, from the Discourse Analysis perspective, by Dominique Maingueneau (2005) and debreagem, from Semiotics, by Greimas e Courtés (2008). To support the methodological parameter, Carlo Guinzburg’s (1989) indiciary paradigm was used. Résumé :
Health systems are heavily promoting patient portals. However, limited health literacy (HL) can restrict online communication via secure messaging (SM) because patients’ literacy skills must be sufficient to convey and comprehend content while clinicians must encourage and elicit communication from patients and match patients’ literacy level. This paper describes the Employing Computational Linguistics to Improve Patient-Provider Secure Email (ECLIPPSE) study, an interdisciplinary effort bringing together scientists in communication, computational linguistics, and health services to employ computational linguistic methods to (1) create a novel Linguistic Complexity Profile (LCP) to characterize communications of patients and clinicians and demonstrate its validity and (2) examine whether providers accommodate communication needs of patients with limited HL by tailoring their SM responses. We will study >5 million SMs generated by >150,000 ethnically diverse type 2 diabetes patients and >9000 clinicians from two settings: an integrated delivery system and a public (safety net) system. Finally, we will then create an LCP-based automated aid that delivers real-time feedback to clinicians to reduce the linguistic complexity of their SMs. This research will support health systems’ journeys to become health literate healthcare organizations and reduce HL-related disparities in diabetes care.

Résumé :
The present study analyses the phenomena of deepfakes and fake news, together with their linguistic fingerprints, to understand how these may influence the public, including in their decision making. Nowadays, linguistic fingerprints are present mostly in digital forms; therefore, forensic linguistics was also recently introduced as a subject and involves the analysis of linguistic fingerprints. The present study provides an insight into the contribution of linguist and forensic linguist experts in the work of investigative authorities. Linguistic fingerprints can convey messages and provide evidence to support an investigation, such concerning the following questions: Who could the perpetrator be? Who could have written the message? The linguist expert can also help develop a profile of perpetrators, including their likely age, sex, ethnicity, or help prove the validity of news versus fake news as well as other attributes of sources. These aspects are all covered in the present study.

Case study research has played a very important role in applied linguistics since the field was established, particularly in studies of language teaching, learning, and use. The case in such studies generally has been a person (e.g., a teacher, learner, speaker, writer, or interlocutor) or a small number of individuals on their own or in a group (e.g., a family, a class, a work team, or a community of practice). The cases are normally studied in depth in order to provide an understanding of individuals’ experiences, issues, insights, developmental pathways, or performance within a particular linguistic, social, or educational context. Rather than discuss constructs, hypotheses, and findings in terms of statistical patterns or trends derived from a larger sample or survey of a population of language learners, as in some quantitative research, a qualitative case study of a person presents a contextualized human profile. Case study has contributed substantially to theory development, generating new perspectives or offering a refutation or refinement of earlier theories in applied linguistics by analyzing linguistic, cultural, and social phenomena associated with children, adolescents, young adults, and older adults. In recent years, the purview of case studies in applied linguistics has expanded to include many previously underrepresented topics, linguistic situations, theoretical perspectives, and populations. This article provides an overview of some traditional areas of coverage and then newer foci in terms of methodology, thematic areas, and findings pertaining to language learners in transnational, multilingual, and diaspora contexts especially.

Résumé :
Historical dictionaries have not yet incorporated prototype theoretical principles, from which singular enhancements might be obtained in historical lexicography. Revisiting diachronic definitions from a prototypical standpoint underlines how salience-based definitions comply more accurately with the cognitive constraints of the human mind. Upon this realization, the paper presents a template for reorganizing historical definitions according to the principles of prototype theory. The resulting definitions depict the semasiological profile of terms in a more transparent way while stressing the mutual interface between linguistic and extralinguistic data and between synchrony and diachrony. At the same time, the paper shows how the theoretical tenets of cognitive linguistics can be put to use in the field of applied linguistics, viz. lexicography.

Abstract Profile/base organization in cognitive linguistics emphasizes a hierarchy of salience imposed on construal by usage events of some concept. Shift in terms of profile/base alignment is highly likely to occur in a cross-linguistic/cultural context. Granted two definitive features of translation, i.e., accountability of a TT to the ST’s textually-grounded intention, unless the TT has an otherwise stated intention, and systematicity attained within the TT itself, whether the shift(s) in a translation are explainable and how fall within our concern. This paper has examined the profile/base organization in two Chinese translations of the opening paragraph of William Faulkner’s The Sound and The Fury, and attempted to locate the factors to account for the textual realization in the TTs as such.

Résumé :
The sixth volume of the Annual Review of Applied Linguistics (ARAL) concerns itself with international bilingual communities, and specifically with the linguistic and educational issues associated with such communities. The objective of this collection of articles is to identify multilingual communities by profile and to deal with such issues as the functional allocation of linguistic repertoires, the implications for education of the existence of multilingual communities, and the implications for the professions resulting from the allocation of linguistic repertoires. The volume aims to survey both field research and linguistic description and to cover as much of the world as it is possible to do in such a limited volume. In fact, contributions covering Australia, Canada, Ghana, Great Britain, the Philippines, South Asia, and Southeast Asia were received, while a number of other areas which had been solicited were not completed in time for publication. In addition, the material covers such concerns as the bilingual's creativity, cognitive development, education, and the media. The several studies raise a number of important questions in addition to supplying extensive annotated and unannotated bibliographies.

Résumé :
The study attempts to justify the development of linguistic personology in Bulgaria as an interdisciplinary scientific paradigm, which comprises theoretical foundations of psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, anthropological linguistics, linguistic pragmatics, semiotics and phonоstylistics. The applied aspect of the approach consists in describing speaker's physiognomic expressions and speech markers, and their anthropological characteristics, which enable researchers to present a speech profile of the respective person through two parameters: their personal identity and personal voice with its unique inherent features. Linguistic personology through speech as an autonomous interdisciplinary research paradigm, serves in forensic (phonoscopic) expertise for the speakers' characteristics diagnostics, considering typical voice peculiarities. The approach studies speaker's verbal behaviour and distinctive features of his or her personal identity signaled by personal voice expression measured through linguistic (phonoscopic) expertise. Linguistic personology through speech is a unique method of personality typization as well as characterizing the speaker based on the analysis of his / her specific pronunciation and voice transformation, used in the field of forensic phonetics. It is proposed to supplement the expert assessment with the results of acoustic analysis of voice samples, as well as their perception, for more objective identification of matching linguistic data. The article represents speech excerpts, the acoustic images of which demonstrate audio-and-visual comprehension of gender differentiation of speakers, whose voices indicate that the recipients belong to the diagnosed group of men, women or transvestites.

Résumé :
Aristotle’s definition of rhetoric as the art of observing the available means of persuasion is one of the most widely used quotations not only in linguistics but also in social, political, and communication sciences. Aristotle, apart from defining the elements of rhetoric (logos, ethos and pathos), has proposed three types of rhetoric that refer either to the present situation (ceremonial), the past (judicial), or the future (political). The current president of Latvia and his language use is one of the most widely discussed topics across the media and academia due to the register, style, and content of his speeches. Moreover, the president of Latvia has a direct impact on how the state is perceived nationally and internationally; thus, it is significant to investigate the linguistic profile of the linguistic expression of the ideas communicated by the president to the wider public. The current study analyses 160 speeches given by president Egils Levits on nationally significant occasions as well as internationally with the aim to investigate whether the speeches of the president of Latvia correspond to the ceremonial, political or judicial rhetoric because the president represents both legal and political discourse as the former judge of the European Court of Human Rights and the former minister of Justice, and as the head of the Republic of Latvia represents the state nationally and abroad. The study is grounded in the theories on rhetoric and Critical Discourse Analysis applied to political discourse and presidential language and discussed by scholars such as Aristotle (1959), Van Dijk (2006), Chilton and Schäffner (2002), O’Keeffe (2006), Van Dijk (2008), David (2014), Wilson (2015) and Wodak and Mayer (2016). The results of the current study reveal that the speeches are a clear representation of a combination of legal, political, and ceremonial rhetoric and cross various semantic fields that are marked by the use of field terminology in combination with topos of definition and name interpretation to explain the terms directly in the speeches. The speeches by Levits are furthermore marked by relatively frequent use of loanwords, neologisms, obsolete words, and compounds that is one of the main characteristics of the linguistic profile of his speeches. Additional characteristic features are the use of parallel sentence constructions, inverted word orders, rhetorical questions, and pronominal referencing to attract the listener's attention and emphasize the thematic areas of the speeches. Nevertheless, it has been concluded that such linguistic techniques as metaphors, metonymies, synecdoche, or hyperbole are used comparatively less frequently, thus making the speeches appear more formal and less emotional from the linguistic point of view.

Résumé :
This paper argues that corpus linguistics offers a methodology which benefits variational pragmatic analysis in a number of ways. Corpus linguistic tools such as word frequency lists allow the researcher to construct a detailed “pragmatic profile” of a word, cluster or act. This, coupled with the fact that most corpora are constructed to be representative of a particular language variety, facilitates an accurate account of language-use differences across various social categories. Pragmatic analysis relies heavily on context for its interpretation. Therefore, an illustrative case study of two corpora representing spoken language recorded in the home environment, one from a middle class Irish family and one from a family from the Irish Traveller Community will be utilised in order to elucidate the benefits of the synergy of corpus linguistics and variational pragmatics. Specifically, the variational distribution of the occurrences of hedges across these two distinct cultural groupings will be examined.

AbstractThe notion of ‘textual colligation’ predicts that certain lexical items have a tendency to occur at particular points in a text, i.e. the beginning or end of texts, paragraphs or sentences. This paper describes new corpus-based methods developed to identify the profile of words, clusters (n-grams) and concgrams (non-contiguous patterns in variant order) in terms of their most common textual locations. Groups of co-occurring text-initial items are then analyzed in terms of their discourse function in relation to theories of newspaper structure. This analysis illustrates how methods from corpus linguistics, when targeted to specific textual positions, can complement text-linguistic analyses.

Résumé :
Repeatedly in recent years, phylogenetic analyses of linguistic data have reached the world's leading scientific journals, but in ways hugely controversial within linguistics itself. Phylogenetic analysis methods, taken from the biological sciences, have been applied to date and track how major language families dispersed through prehistory, with implications also for archaeology and genetics. As this approach is extended to ever more language families worldwide, this review offers methodological perspectives and cautionary tales from the most high-profile and hotly disputed case of all: Indo-European. This article surveys the checkered history of these phylogenetic methods and of the cognacy databases they have relied on for their linguistic input data. It clears up cross-disciplinary misconceptions about this new methodology, identifies major flaws in the current state of the art (hence its highly inconsistent results), diagnoses the causes, and outlines new solutions that might bring the field closer to living up to its potential.

Learner's Lexicography has reached a high standard of quality in language description. However, it is still necessary to face an old and, at the same time, always new challenge: increasing the user-friendliness of learner's dictionaries. This work deals with how to improve learner’s dictionaries, focusing on the user profile and the user's needs. To achieve this aim, notions from Psycholinguistics, Contrastive Linguistic, Applied Linguistics, Lexicology and Cognitive Psychology were central for this research. This study covered the delimitation of the user profile and the relevance of their mother tongue and the user's learning needs in relation to their proficiency level in the foreign language. At last, I carry out a brief analysis of entries in learner's dictionaries to discuss how straightforward and user-friendly the information provided is. This work allows the conclusion that an interdisciplinary approach can improve the user-friendliness of learner's dictionaries, particularly EFL and SFL dictionaries.

Résumé :
Software operational profile (SOP) has found its extensive use in applications such as estimation of software reliability, allocation of testing resources, evaluation of software quality attributes, performance analysis and testing of software. However, benefits of the SOP can only be reaped if it is developed during early stages of software life cycle and updated for changes in operational structure with the progress in development of software process. In the early stages of software life cycle usage data is available only in linguistic form. This linguistic data may be obtained from previous release of software usage data, marketing surveys, experts or user's opinion or from combinations of these. Moreover, due to limited data resources and large efforts required to convert the gathered data into point estimates, reluctance is observed towards the development of SOP in spite of its numerous benefits. This paper proposes a fuzzy software operational profile (FSOP) approach, which takes input data in the form of linguistic variables from experts and assigns occurrence possibilities to the input parameters. Linguistic data collected from the experts are processed to obtain the resultant fuzzy operational profile. Further, the resultant profile is defuzzified and normalized to estimate occurrence probability of operations. The proposed method has been applied to various software systems and results obtained are compared with existing practice. Besides simplicity, FSOP can easily be altered for changes in operational architecture and frequencies simply by changing the location and value of the affected linguistic variable.

The principles of selecting educational texts of a medical profile for practical classes in Russian as a foreign language are considered. The ways of their linguodidactic adaptation for foreign students who speak Russian in the volume of the basic and first certification levels are described. The novelty of the research lies in the application of the methodology of corpus linguistics and the modeling method in the preparation of educational material for the lesson. The author presents examples of adaptation of the educational text in the discipline “Anatomy” in order to prepare students for further study of the subject and successful communication in this subject area. It has been determined that for foreign students with a basic level of Russian language proficiency, it is necessary to apply non-linguistic and linguistic adaptation of the text, while for students with a B1 language proficiency level, non-linguistic text adaptation should be carried out, aimed at preserving the meaning of the original text of the textbook. It has been established that the Latin version of the terms makes it difficult to perceive the Russian-language text and, therefore, necessitates the creation of a terminological dictionary on the subject with parallel translation into Russian and English.

Résumé :
Within the field of Linguistics, Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, a crowdsourcing marketplace specializes in computer-based Human Intelligence Tasks, has been praised as a cost efficient source of data for English and other major languages. Spanish is a good candidate due to its presence within the US and beyond. Still, detailed information concerning the linguistic and demographic profile of Spanish-speaking ‘Turkers’ is missing, thus making it difficult for researchers to evaluate whether the Mechanical Turk provides the right environment for their tasks. This paper addresses this gap in our knowledge by developing the first detailed study of the presence of Spanish-speaking workers, focusing on factors relevant for research planning, namely, (socio)linguistically relevant variables and information concerning work habits. The results show that this platform provides access to a fairly active participant pool of both L1 and L2Spanish speakers as well as bilinguals. A brief introduction to how Amazon’s Mechanical Turk works and overview of Hispanic Linguistics projects that have so far used the Mechanical Turk successfully is included.

This study considers, both transversally and longitudinally, advanced second language (L2) learners’ profile portraits, how these correlate with their sociolinguistic and linguistic performance, and how changes in these portraits over time connect to changes in sociolinguistic performance. The results show a strong correlation between high degrees of learner engagement, as captured in the profile portraits, and the three measures of sociolinguistic and linguistic performance. The longitudinal data point to an increase over time both of levels of engagement and of use of informal sociolinguistic variants. By measuring the impact of learners’ evolving engagement on their use of sociolinguistic variants as they progress to a more advanced level of proficiency in their L2, the present study shows that an index of engagement can usefully summarize the multiple effects captured by the learner profile portraits and can shed light on rates of use of certain forms.

AbstractThis paper claims that the inner heterogeneity of the so-called Southern or Atlantic Spanish can be best analyzed under the theoretical framework commonly known as German Varieties Linguistics developed by the Fribourg School. This heterogeneity is shown in the diverse status of materially identical linguistic facts in the Andalusian and American varieties of the Spanish language. The paper argues that these status-related differences can only be properly explained under an analytical framework that duly takes into account the complexity of the discursive interaction taking place among different linguistic varieties (diatopic, diastratic and diaphasic), hence allowing for a dynamic description of both Andalusian and Spanish-American varieties. The theoretical framework elaborated by Varieties Linguistics, which offers a modellization of how the linguistic behavior of speakers differs depending on the profile of the communicative situation, facilitates the adscription of different status to some linguistic facts in Andalusian, Canarian and American Spanish which are materially identical, but are diasystematic marked in some communities and diasystematic unmarked in other, where they constitute a polycentric norm in their own right. We take as a setting point the Fuzzy Temporal Profile (FTP) model, which is used to describe the temporal evolution of a certain physical parameter. This model defines the approximation of an evolution curve by means of a set of linear sections between a series of significant points (X0, X1, …, XN), and in which each section is defined by means of an imprecise constraint on the duration, the increase in value and the slope between the points connected by the section. Following the FTP model we present a language for the representation of trends, the semantics of which is projected onto a fuzzy definition of each one of the constraints of a profile of interest.

Résumé :
The fundamental question that this paper addresses is to what extent an individual’s judgment of incoming linguistic stimuli – in the form of a translation product – can be thought of as static and objective, as opposed to dynamic and subjectively constructed. By extension, this article proposes that rather than being viewed (solely) as displaying a set of stable features, the target text can be construed as a cognitive construct that is dynamically shaped. This proposition is tested against the cognitive mechanisms of expectations. I discuss two empirical studies examining how expectations about the authorship of translation, and therefore its characteristics like quality, can influence the audience’s perception of the translation product. The question is examined for written translation (Study 1) and subtitling (Study 2). While in both cases, the central subject of inquiry are linguistic stimuli, in the latter case, these are embedded multimodally. The hypothesis is that generating certain product expectations through the use of linguistic cues will lead the audience to assess the product differently than in a condition where identical material is assessed without cuing or where opposite receptor expectations are generated. It is relevant to note that both experiments were conducted with students whose background included linguistics and translation. Such a participant profile could be associated with a more rigorously principled – and therefore stable – assessment of linguistic stimuli in both monosemiotic and polysemiotic contexts. This, in turn, would make our participants less susceptible to the effects of anticipatory cognition than would be the case with participants without formal training in the relevant fields

Children’s (N = 48) and adults’ (N = 28) truthful and deceptive statements were compared using a linguistics-based computer software program. Children (4 to 7 years of age) and adults (18 to 25 years of age) participated in a mock courtroom experiment, in which they were asked to recount either a true or fabricated event. Testimonies were then analyzed using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count Software (LIWC; Pennebaker et al. 2007). This software has been previously used to detect adults’ deceptive statements (e.g., Bond and Lee, 2005). To date, no research has used this method on children’s narratives, nor has this software been used to compare those narratives to adult counterparts. Markers generated through the LIWC program achieved detection rates of 72.40% for samples of both children’s and adults’ narratives combined. In contrast, adult laypersons’ (N = 48) detection rates, for the same narratives (i.e., both children and adults) were close to chance. More specifically, detection rates were above chance for truth (65.00%) and below chance for lies (45.00%). Thus, the linguistic profile provided through LIWC yielded greater accuracy for evaluating the veracity of children’s and adults’ narratives compared to adult laypersons’ detection accuracy.

Résumé :
The paper investigates Hungarian imperative sentence types from a pragmaticosemantic point of view. In addition to the baseline imperative, it analyzes types with non-standard intonation pattern and/or discourse markers. We apply the (S)DRT-based discourse-semantic framework of ℜeALIS for the examination and representation of five form–function pairs. The discussed types are all assigned an intensional profile which encodes the interlocutors’ beliefs, desires and intentions (from the addresser’s perspective). The analysis derives the different meanings of the variants from parametric differences.

Résumé :
The article presents the bibliographic database “Türks of Siberia (book editions)”, on which base an eponymous index was formed. The resources were generated within the framework of the Otrar electronic library project curated by the YERTAD Association of History and Culture of the Republic of Turkey. While creating the database and index, the task was to show publications devoted to particular Turkic peoples and their subjects. Thus, the DB documents were indexed by two rubricators: topical and subject, where the subject headings were the Turkic people names including all variants of peoples’ names reflected in publications (above 50 nations). Combining bibliographic resources on Siberian Türks in the form of a database and a printed bibliographic index allows the consumer to view in full the information on the topic accessible to different categories of users. The article analyzes a documentary flow on linguistics of DB “Türks of Siberia (book editions)” with the objectives to characterize publications (dictionaries, monographs, textbooks) on studying the linguistic culture of Siberian Turkic peoples (Yakuts, Tuvans, Altaians, Khakasses, Shors, Siberian Tatars, Dolgans, Kumanlins, Telets, Chelkans, Tofalars of the Chulyms). The analysis showed rather huge volume of book editions on linguistics (over 36% of the total number of publications). Scientific institutes of the relevant profile and universities investigate language and prepare publications on linguistics. The authors state that studying languages of almost all Siberian Turkic peoples is provided with appropriate book editions.

In recent decades there has been a trend towards greater use of empirical data, for instance corpus data, within linguistics. I analyse a sample of linguistics articles from the past half-century in order to establish a detailed profile for this trend. Based on consistent criteria for classifying papers as evidence-based, intuition-based, or neutral, the resulting profile shows that the trend (i) is real, but (ii) is strikingly weaker in general linguistics than in the special subfield of computational linguistics, and (iii) appears to have begun to go into reverse.

Résumé :
Cognitive Grammar analyses the semantics of linguistic features in relation to human cognition; Free Indirect Style allows authors to represent their characters’ cognition with language. This article applies Cognitive Grammar to the analysis of a character’s mind that is represented with Free Indirect Style. In the tradition of mind style analysis, it aims to use linguistics to reveal some of the underlying cognitive processes and proclivities at work in the character’s psychology. The character in question is the protagonist in Malcolm Lowry’s Under the Volcano, an alcoholic who is largely characterised by his drunken behaviour and ideation. This article therefore focuses on the linguistic features that serve to represent his inebriated state of mind. It analyses the semantic effects of those features primarily in terms of attentional focus, drawing on Cognitive Grammar concepts, such as objective construal, specificity, scope, profile and domain, and relating these to the protagonist’s cognitive proclivities for solipsism, partial awareness, delayed reaction, attenuated experience and self-delusion. The article also discusses the theoretical background for mind style analysis, arguing for the continued importance of focusing on the relationship between the text and a character’s mind, alongside the focus on the reader’s mind that has come to dominate cognitive stylistics.

Résumé :
Pragmatists and discourse grammarians have benefited tremendously from examining naturally occurring data. An examination of all and only the necessary discoursal conditions obtaining when a certain linguistic expression occurs has paved the way for pragmatists to describe the appropriateness conditions placed on linguistic forms. These were identified as the discourse functions of those linguistic expressions. For example, based on an empirical study of English itand wh-clefts in discourse, Prince ( 1978) defined distinct discourse functions for it-clefts and wh-clefts. She argued that the discourse function of the embedded clause in it-clefts is to mark "known (factual) information" and that of wh-clefts is to mark information "Given (currently available) to the addressee". These discourse functions should hold true in (virtually) every case the clefts are used.

Résumé :
Recent progress in comparative linguistics, distributional typology, and linguistic geography allows a unified model of Uralic prehistory to take shape. Proto-Uralic first introduced an eastern grammatical profile to central and western Eurasia, where it has remained quite stable. Proto-Indo-European and Proto-Uralic had no connection, either genealogical or areal, until the spreading Indo-Iranian branch of Indo-European came into contact with the already-diverged branches of Uralic about 4,000 years ago. A severe and widespread drought beginning about 4,200 years ago cleared the way for a rapid spread of Uralic-speaking people along the Volga and across southwestern Siberia. It also contributed to the sudden rise of the Seima-Turbino bronze-trading complex, one component of the Uralic spread mechanism. After the initial spread, the Uralic daughter languages retained their Volga homelands remarkably stably while also extending far to the north in a recurrent Eurasian pattern.
