Résumé :
The work is investigated by the influence of variable geometric algorithms in modeling multifactor processes using multidimensional interpolation. Geometric models of multifactorial processes obtained using multidimensional interpolation inherent variability, which is a consequence of the multiplicity of the choice of reference lines during the development of geometric modeling schemes. At the same time, all possible variations of geometric interpolyns are fully satisfying the initial data. It has been established that the number of variations of geometric schemes directly depends on the number of current parameters and the dimension of the space in which the simulated geometrical object is located. Thus, a variable approach to geometrical modeling of multifactor processes generates a number of scientific tasks, the main one is the need to determine the effect of the variability of geometric algorithms on the final results of the computational experiment and, as a result, the choice of the best modeling results. To this end, the article presents the studies of variable geometric algorithms and computational experiments on the example of 2-parametric geometric interpolyns. A classification of 2-parametric geometric interpolytesses, which were conditionally divided into 3 types. Depending on the geometric scheme of constructing interpolynta, the square geometric scheme, a rectangular geometric scheme, a mixed geometric scheme. As a result of computational experiments, it was found that for a square geometric scheme, the variability does not affect the final results, in rectangular geometric schemes, the variability has a slight influence, and mixed geometric schemes may have significant differences and require additional research to select the highest quality geometric process model. Comparison of geometric models were performed by the methods of scientific visualization by overlaying the response surfaces on each other.

Résumé :
Abstract The microphysical processes inside convective clouds play an important role in climate. They directly control the amount of detrainment of cloud hydrometeor and water vapor from updrafts. The detrained water substance in turn affects the anvil cloud formation, upper-tropospheric water vapor distribution, and thus the atmospheric radiation budget. In global climate models, convective parameterization schemes have not explicitly represented microphysics processes in updrafts until recently. In this paper, the authors provide a review of existing schemes for convective microphysics parameterization. These schemes are broadly divided into three groups: tuning-parameter-based schemes (simplest), single-moment schemes, and two-moment schemes (most comprehensive). Common weaknesses of the tuning-parameter-based and single-moment schemes are outlined. Examples are presented from one of the two-moment schemes to demonstrate the performance of the scheme in simulating the hydrometeor distribution in convection and its representation of the effect of aerosols on convection.

Résumé :
The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model version 3.0 developed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) includes three land surface schemes: the simple soil thermal diffusion (STD) scheme, the Noah scheme, and the Rapid Update Cycle (RUC) scheme. We have recently coupled the sophisticated NCAR Community Land Model version 3 (CLM3) into WRF to better characterize land surface processes. Among these four land surface schemes, the STD scheme is the simplest in both structure and process physics. The Noah and RUC schemes are at the intermediate level of complexity. CLM3 includes the most sophisticated snow, soil, and vegetation physics among these land surface schemes. WRF simulations with all four land surface schemes over the western United States (WUS) were carried out for the 1 October 1995 through 30 September 1996. The results show that land surface processes strongly affect temperature simulations over the (WUS). As compared to observations, WRF-CLM3 with the highest complexity level significantly improves temperature simulations, except for the wintertime maximum temperature. Precipitation is dramatically overestimated by WRF with all four land surface schemes over the (WUS) analyzed in this study and does not show a close relationship with land surface processes.

An urn contains balls of different colours, which are randomly drawn one at a time. After each draw the number of balls in the urn with the same colour as the ball last drawn is changed. Special cases are sampling with and without replacement, and Pólya sampling. The drawing stops when a given number of colours has been drawn a given number of times. The number of times the different colours have been drawn is studied in this paper by imbedding the urn scheme in birth processes. Both exact and asymptotic results are obtained. In particular, waiting times for sampling with and without replacement and for Pólya sampling are considered.

Résumé :
An occupancy problem with an infinite number of bins and a random probability vector for the locations of the balls is considered. The respective sizes of the bins are related to the split times of a Yule process. The asymptotic behavior of the landscape of the first empty bins, i.e. the set of corresponding indices represented by point processes, is analyzed and convergences in distribution to mixed Poisson processes are established. Additionally, the influence of the random environment, the random probability vector, is analyzed. It is represented by two main components: an independent, identically distributed sequence and a fixed random variable. Each of these components has a specific impact on the qualitative behavior of the stochastic model. It is shown in particular that, for some values of the parameters, some rare events, which are identified, determine the asymptotic behavior of the average values of the number of empty bins in some regions.

Résumé :
The efficiency of Boyd's group charts -the classical scheme for the statistical control of multiple-stream processes- is impaired by its underlying model of the process not considering that part of the variation in such processes is common to all streams. Mortell and Runger (1995) and Runger, Alt and Montgomery (1996) proposed alternative schemes which take this fact into account. We propose a third scheme: a modified group chart, based on the differences between the values of the quality characteristic in each particular stream and the average of the values of all streams. The average run lengths of this scheme and of the competing schemes in the case of shifts in the mean of one individual stream are obtained either analytically or by simulation and compared. The results show the superiority of the proposed scheme except for shifts smaller than one standard deviation, against which no one of the schemes is really efficient.

Résumé :
The topic of this thesis is the study of approximation schemes of jump processes whose driving noise is a Levy process. In the first part of our work we study properties of the driving noise. We present a novel approximation method for the density of a Levy process. The scheme makes use of a continuous time Markov chain defined through a careful analysis of the generator. We identify the rate of convergence and carry out a detailed analysis of the error. We also analyse the case of multidimensional Levy processes in the form of subordinate Brownian motion. We provide a weak scheme to approximate the density that does not rely on discretising the Levy measure and results in better convergence rates. The second part of the thesis concerns the analysis of schemes for BSDEs driven by Brownian motion and a Poisson random measure. Such equations appear naturally in hedging problems, stochastic control and they provide a natural probabilistic approach to the solution of certain semi linear PIDEs. While the numerical approximation of the continuous case has been studied in the literature, there has been relatively little progress in the study of such equations with a discontinuous driver. We present a weak Monte Carlo scheme in this setting based on Picard iterations. We discuss its convergence and provide a numerical illustration.

Résumé :
In this thesis we consider several topics related to the construction of optimal Markovian dynamics in the context of sampling from high-dimensional probability distributions. Firstly, we introduce and analyse Langevin samplers that consist of perturbations of the standard overdamped and underdamped Langevin dynamics. The perturbed dynamics is such that its invariant measure is the same as that of the unperturbed dynamics. We show that appropriate choices of the perturbations can lead to samplers that have improved properties, at least in terms of reducing the asymptotic variance. We present a detailed analysis of the new Langevin samplers for Gaussian target distributions. Our theoretical results are supported by numerical experiments with non-Gaussian target measures. Secondly, we present a general framework for the analysis and development of ensemble based methods, encompassing both diffusion and piecewise deterministic Markov processes. For many performance criteria of interest, including the asymptotic variance, the task of finding efficient couplings can be phrased in terms of problems related to the theory of optimal transportation. We investigate general structural properties, proving a singularity theorem that has both geometric and probabilistic interpretations. Moreover, we show that those problems can often be solved approximately and support our findings with numerical experiments. Addressing the convergence to equilibrium of coupled processes we furthermore derive a modified Poincaré inequality. Finally, under some conditions, we prove exponential ergodicity for the zigzag process using hypocoercivity techniques.

Résumé :
The research is motivated by real applications, such as pasteurization plant, water networks and autonomous system, which each of them require a specific control system to provide proper management able to take into account their particular features and operating limits in presence of uncertainties related to their operation and failures from component breakdowns. According to that most of the real systems have nonlinear behaviors, it can be approximated them by polytopic linear uncertain models such as Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) and Takagi-Sugeno (TS) models. Therefore, a new economic Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach based on LPV/TS models is proposed and the stability of the proposed approach is certified by using a region constraint on the terminal state. Besides, the MPC-LPV strategy is extended based on the system with varying delays affecting states and inputs. The control approach allows the controller to accommodate the scheduling parameters and delay change. By computing the prediction of the state variables and delay along a prediction time horizon, the system model can be modified according to the evaluation of the estimated state and delay at each time instant. To increase the system reliability, anticipate the appearance of faults and reduce the operational costs, actuator health monitoring should be considered. Regarding several types of system failures, different strategies are studied for obtaining system failures. First, the damage is assessed with the rainflow-counting algorithm that allows estimating the component’s fatigue and control objective is modified by adding an extra criterion that takes into account the accumulated damage. Besides, two different health-aware economic predictive control strategies that aim to minimize the damage of components are presented. Then, economic health-aware MPC controller is developed to compute the components and system reliability in the MPC model using an LPV modeling approach and maximizes the availability of the system by estimating system reliability. Additionally, another improvement considers chance-constraint programming to compute an optimal list replenishment policy based on a desired risk acceptability level, managing to dynamically designate safety stocks in flowbased networks to satisfy non-stationary flow demands. Finally, an innovative health-aware control approach for autonomous racing vehicles to simultaneously control it to the driving limits and to follow the desired path based on maximization of the battery RUL. The proposed approach is formulated as an optimal on-line robust LMI based MPC driven from Lyapunov stability and controller gain synthesis solved by LPV-LQR problem in LMI formulation with integral action for tracking the trajectory.

Contracting continues to play an important role in the Department of Defense (DoD) as a means to acquire a wide array of systems, supplies, and services. More than half of DoDs budget is spent through contracts. With these large dollars spent comes the possibility of fraud in contracting that can subvert the process causing waste and possibly impeding mission accomplishment. The purpose of this research was to analyze DoDs contracting workforces level of fraud knowledge, according to the six phases of contract management, five internal control components, and six procurement fraud scheme categories. This was done through the deployment of a survey consisting of fraud knowledge and organizational perception questions. The survey was completed by contracting personnel at the U.S. Army Mission and Installation Contracting Command. The results displayed differences in fraud awareness and perception among the different contracting phases, internal control components, and procurement fraud scheme categories. Recommendations for improving fraud awareness were also presented as well as areas for further research.

Résumé :
This thesis investigates so called quantizations of continuous random variables. A quantization of a continuous random variables is a discrete random variable that approximates the continuous one by having similar properties, often by sharing weak convergence. A measure on how well the quantization approximates the continuous variable is introduced and methods for generating quantizations are developed. The connection between quantization of the normal distribution and the Hermite polynomials is discussed and methods for generating optimal quantizations are suggested. An observed connection between finite differences and quantization is examined and is identified to just be a special case. Finally a method of turning an Euler-Maruyama scheme into a deterministic problem by quantization is presented along with a convergence analysis. The method is reminiscent of standard tree methods, that can be used for e.g. option pricing, but has a few advantages such that there are no requirements on the grid point placements, it can even change for each time step.

Résumé :
The success of the emerging ATM networks depends both on switch performance at the cell level and routing strategies at the call level. In this dissertation, we address both issues. At the cell level, we propose a measure that captures cell loss behavior and analyze ATM switch performance by computing the distribution of consecutive cell losses. The extremely low loss probability requirements of an ATM switch preclude the use of simulation, calling for the use of analytic and numerical methods. The latter methods involve the construction and solution of the underlying stochastic processes associated with the switch and workload. Since the detailed stochastic process representations of the above are on the order of tens to hundreds of thousands of states, we use a tool called UltraSAN, which allows for the automatic construction and solution of these detailed stochastic processes. We also compute the distribution of the queue length rather than just the average queue length. At the call level, we propose two restoration schemes and a method to analyze their performance in the case of failures in ATM transport networks. The proposed restoration strategies utilize the existing portions of the network after a link or switch failure rather than relying on redundancy while restoring the affected calls. We also propose an efficient routing scheme for multi-class traffic with widely differing call characteristics. We develop as approach based on Markov decision theory and propose an adaptive band-width protection strategy to prevent any specific application type from monopolizing the link resources.

Résumé :
A point process model for the packet stream arising in teletraffic processes is the discrete, non-negative integer-valued, stationary process introduced by Neuts and Pearce. In this thesis, we examine an empirical approach to develop a monitoring scheme for that point process. Monitoring is a procedure of tracking a stochastic process to identify quickly the development of anomalous situations in the evolution of that process and detect their assignable causes. Further, a data-analytic scheme to evaluate the order of a Markov chain that quantifies the local dependence embedded in the point process and Walsh spectral techniques are examined.

Résumé :
The developing new products of high quality, low unit cost, and shortening lead time to markets are the key elements required for enterprises to obtain competitive advantages. In order to improve the creativity and shorten lead time to markets, a methodology of automatic virtual entity simulation of conceptual design results is proposed. At the end of conceptual design, the conceptual design results are expressed in the symbolic schemes generated by the computerized approach with a higher capability to obtain the innovative conceptual design. Then, the symbolic scheme is identified into basic mechanisms and their connections. To the identified basic mechanisms, their kinematic analysis is carried out by matching basic Barranov trusses, and their virtual entities are modeled based on feature-based technique and encapsulated as one design object. Based on the structures of the basic mechanisms and their connections, a space layout to the mechanical system corresponding to the symbolic scheme is fulfilled then. With the pre-assembly approach, all parts in the mechanical system are put onto proper positions where the constraint equations are met. In this way, the virtual entity assembly model of the mechanical system corresponding to the symbolic scheme is set up. Changing the positions of the driving links continually, the virtual entity simulation of the mechanical system will be fulfilled. As a result, with the aid of this approach, we can not only obtain innovative conceptual design results with excellent performances, but also shorten the design time and the cost of product developments.

Résumé :
The focus of this paper is on the complementary mechanisms and interventions likely to increase the effectiveness and impact of conditional cash transfer (CCT) schemes in South Asia that aim to reduce female infanticide and child marriage and promote girls’ education. The literature on the institutional aspects of these particular schemes is limited, but from this and from the wider literature on CCT programmes in similar contexts, the following institutional mechanisms are likely to enhance success: a strong information and communication strategy that enhances programme reach and coverage and ensures stakeholder awareness; advance agreements with financial institutions; a simple and flexible registration process; appropriate use of technology to strengthen access, disbursement, and oversight; adequate implementation capacity to support processes of outreach, enrolment, and monitoring; monitoring and accountability mechanisms embedded in programme design; coordination mechanisms across government across social protection schemes; an effective management information system; and the provision of quality services in the sectors for which conditions are required. There is a very limited body of evidence that explores these institutional issues as they apply to the specific CCT programmes that are the focus of this report, however, there is more available evidence of the potential impact of ‘cash-plus’ programmes, which complement the transfers with other interventions designed to enhance their results or address the structural barriers to well-being

Résumé :
Versioning of data and metadata is a crucial - but often overlooked - topic in scientific work. Using the wrong version of a (meta)data set can lead to drastically difference outcomes in interpretation, and lead to substantial, propagating downstream errors. At the same time, past versions of (meta)data sets are valuable records of the research process which should be preserved for transparency and complete reproducibility. Further, the final version of (meta)data sets may actually include errors that previous versions did not. Thus, careful version control is the foundation for trust in and broad reusability of research and operational (meta)data. This document provides an introduction to the principles of versioning, technical recommendations on how to manage version histories, and discusses some pitfalls and possible solutions. In the first part of this document, we present examples of change processes that require proper management and introduce popular versioning schemes. Finally, the document presents recommended practices for researchers as well as for infrastructure developers.

Résumé :
Estuaries trap much of the fine sediment delivered to them by rivers. This phenomenon presents challenges to the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) navigation mission, which maintains navigable waterways for waterborne commerce through estuarine regions. The USACE Regional Sediment Management Program and the USACE Norfolk District are conducting a regional sediment transport modeling study to identify cost-effective sediment management schemes in the James River, a tributary estuary of Chesapeake Bay. A key element of the sediment transport modeling study is the definition of cohesive sediment transport processes, such as erosion and settling velocity. This report describes field-based measurements of cohesive sediment erosion and settling velocity conducted in November 2017. The team conducted erosion testing on 15 cores collected throughout the tidal system. Additionally, two anchor stations were occupied to measure tidal variations in vertical distributions of suspended sediment concentration, particle size, and settling velocity. Recommended cohesive sediment transport parameters were developed from the field measurements.

A formative evaluation scheme for climate services. Fteval - Austrian Platform for Research and Technology Policy Evaluation, avril 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.22163/fteval.2022.541.

Résumé :
Climate change and its socio-ecological impacts affect all sectors of society. To tackle the multiple risks of climate change the field of climate services evolved during the last decades. In this scientific field products to be applied in practice are developed in constant interaction between climate service providers and users. To judge the effectiveness of these co-creation endeavours, evaluation is crucial. At present, output and outcome assessments are conducted occasionally in this research field. However, the summative evaluation does not help to adjust the ongoing process of co-creation. Thus, our work focuses on the formative evaluation of co-creative development of science-based climate service products. As the first step, main characteristics of the product development process were identified empirically. Secondly, we determined the six sub- processes of climate service product development and related process steps. Thirdly, we selected the questions for the formative evaluation relevant to all the sub-processes and process-steps. Then, a literature review delivered the theoretical background for further work and revealed further quality aspects. These aspects from literature were brought together with our results from the empirical work. In the end, we created a new scheme of quality criteria and related assessment questions for the different sub-processes in climate services, based on both, empirical and theoretical work. As the authors take into account the process of co-production in a real-life case, the criteria and assessment questions proposed are operational and hands-on. The quality aspects refer to the five principles of applicability, theoretical and empirical foundation, professionalism, transparency of processes and the disclosure of preconditions. They are elaborated comprehensively in our study. The resulting formative evalu- ation scheme is novel in climate service science and practice and useful in improving the co-creation processes in climate services and beyond.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Entity Relationship (ER) diagrams are among the most popular formalisms for the support of database design [7, 12, 17, 6]. Their classical use in the (usually computer aided) database design process can roughly be described as follows: after evaluating the requirements of the application, the database designer constructs an ER schema, which represents the conceptual model of the new database. CASE tools can be used to automatically transform the ER schema into a relational database schema, which is then manually fine-tuned. During the last years, the initially rather simple ER formalisms has been extended by various means of expressivity to account for new, more complex application areas such as schema integration for data warehouses [12, 3, 13]. Designing a conceptual model with such enriched ER diagrams is a nontrivial task: there exist complex interactions between the various means of expressivity, which quite often result in unnoticed inconsistencies in the ER schemas and in implicit ramifications of the modeling that have not been intended by the designer. To address this problem, Description Logics (DLs) have been proposed and succesfully used as a tool for reasoning about ER diagrams and thereby detecting the aforementioned anomalies [5, 6, 8].

Résumé :
In recent years there has been a growing concern over the performance of Israel and U.S. agricultural marketing organizations. In Israel, poor performance of some marketing institutions has led to radical reforms. Examples are the two leading export industries - citrus and flowers. In the U.S., growth of local market power is eliminating competitive row product prices which served as the basis for farmer cooperative payment plans. This research studies, theoretically, several aspects of the above problem and develops empirical methods to assess their relative importance. The theoretical part deals with two related aspects of the operation of processing and marketing firms. The first is the technological structure of these firms. To this end, we formalize a detailed theory that describes the production process itself and the firm's decision. The model accounts for multiple products and product characteristics. The usefulness of the theory for measurement of productivity and pricing of raw material is demonstrated. The second aspect of the processing and marketing firm that we study is unique to the agricultural sector, where many such firms are cooperatives. In such cooperative an efficient and fair mechanism for purchasing raw materials from members is crucial to successful performances of the firm. We focus on: 1) pricing of raw materials. 2) comparison of employment of quota and price regimes by the cooperative to regulate the quantities, supplied by members. We take into consideration that the cooperative management is subject to pressure from member farmers. 3) Tier pricing for raw materials in order to ensure efficiency and zero profits at the cooperative level. This problem is examined in both closed and open cooperatives. The empirical part focuses in: 1) the development of methodologies for estimating demand for differentiated products; 2) assessing farmers response to component pricing; 3) measurement of potential and actual exploitation of market power by an agricultural marketing firm. The usefulness of the developed methodologies are demonstrated by several application to agricultural sub-sectors, including: U.S. dairy industry, Oregon wine industry, Israeli Cotton industry and Israeli Citrus industry.
