Résumé :
The conclusion of Chrysalus' famous canticum comparing the successful duping of his master Nicobulus to the sack of Troy has often been suspected by critics (Plaut. Bacch. 976–7): nunc Priamo nostro si est quis emptor, comptionalem senemuendam ego, uenalem quem habeo, extemplo ubi oppidum expugnauero. Now, if there's any buyer for our Priam, I'll sell as a job lot the old man, whom I have for sale as soon as I've stormed the city. The lines are condemned by Leo, Gaiser, and Jocelyn, but defended by Lefèvre and printed by Lindsay, Barsby, Questa (in his first and third editions, but not his second), and most recently De Melo. In addition to qualms about the inconsistency of casting Nicobulus as Priam here when he was Ilium little over thirty lines earlier – an inconsistency which can surely be attributed to the ebullience of Chrysalus rather than the incompetence of an interpolator – the main objection to these lines is their divergence from the mythological tradition about Priam's fate at the sack of Troy. As Jocelyn puts it, ‘The threat senem uendam … would have been ludicrous to any audience acquainted with the heroic story.’

A commonly attested episode in ancient art and literature is the brutal death of Troilus at the hands of Achilles. Priam's son is mostly depicted as a defenceless pais (‘young man’ or ‘boy’), slain in a cruel ambush outside Troy while on horseback on some non-military business. The Iliad makes no reference to the slaying of Troilus. The only mention of him is in Book 24, where Priam, after a visit from Iris, the divine messenger, becomes determined to go and visit Achilles in order to ransom the body of Hector. It is at this moment that in an emotional outburst the Trojan king berates his surviving sons for the mere fact that they still live, while Mestor, Troilus, and Hector, his three ‘most excellent sons’, have lost their lives as a result of the war (Il. 24.255–60):

Résumé :
Priam has arrived at Achilles' hut. He has taken Achilles unawares. He has clasped his knees, he has kissed his hands. He has made his twofold plea: he has appealed for compassion in Peleus' name and, taking his cue from Achilles' sympathetic response, he has requested the ransom of Hector. It is the climax of the Iliad. We await Achilles' words, we await the response which has been the focus of the enormous expansion and elaboration of Book 24: the preparation for the journey, the journey, the meeting with Hermes, Priam's remarkable arrival at Achilles' hut, his painfully slow but deliberate approach to the single reason for his mission, to his request for the return of Hector's corpse. It has been the point to which the course of the Iliad has been implicitly directed since Achilles first learned of the death of Patroclus: his bitterness and his continuing obsession with Patroclus have found expression in the harsh negatives of his response first to Lycaon, then to Hector. That harshness has been translated into action, too: into the cruel rhythm of Achilles' ἀριστεία and his repeated mutilation of Hector's corpse.

Résumé :
“I have seen Priam's Treasure … I have held these vessels in my own hands.” This claim by Yevgenii Sidorov, the Russian Minister of Culture, in an interview in Literaturnaya Gazeta on 25th August 1993, was the first official admission that Priam's Treasure, thought lost since 1945, is now in Russia. It helps us to complete the story of this famous find, from the day of its discovery to the present. Research by David Traill, Reinhard Witte, and myself has clarified the earliest parts. Correspondence published by Joachim Herrmann, Gustav Mahr and Leslie Fitton helps illuminate the late 1870s and the 1880s. For the turbulent years of World War II we have an important publication by Mechthilde Unverzagt and intensive research by Klaus Goldmann. And finally from Russia comes documentation unearthed by Konstantin Akinsha and Grigorii Kozlov. The full story can now be told, and that is what I should like to attempt in this paper. There remains, however, the question, to whom does the Treasure properly belong?—to which I hope the outline of an answer will emerge.

Résumé :
Schliemann's first campaign of excavation at Troy (1871–3) culminated in the discovery of ‘Priam's Treasure’. The find remains the largest and certainly the most controversial ever to have been made at Troy. In 1984 l argued that it was not a single find, as Schliemann reports, but a composite, comprising a core of pieces actually found on 31 May 1873 and a number of other pieces found earlier (Traill 1984 = 1993: 127–53). The article generated a considerable response and, apparently, some confusion. For instance, after demonstrating that Schliemann's story of Sophia's assistance at the discovery was a lie, I asked if there were adequate grounds for believing that he had actually found the pieces of ‘Priam's Treasure’ at Troy rather than, say, bought them from local dealers. I then indicated that the answer was ‘overwhelmingly in the affirmative’ and listed six specific reasons why we should believe this. I concluded: ‘These facts constitute a powerful argument that most, and probably all, of the pieces of ‘Priam's Treasure’ were in fact found in Early Bronze Age Troy’ (Traill 1984: 111 = 1993: 148–9). It would have been remarkable if after this I went on to argue, or even to suggest, that some of the pieces might be fakes. I did not. I have never suggested that any item of ‘Priam's Treasure’ is a fake. Yet critics have persistently represented me, either explicitly or implicitly, as holding this view, thereby muddying waters already murky and distracting attention from the real issues. It is hoped that this paper will refocus the debate on relevant topics.

Résumé :
Abstract The inconsistency at Verg. A. 2.544-6 is usually regarded as either a slip on Vergil’s part, or as the result of an unrealistic conceptualization of Pyrrhus’ shield. This paper argues that the passage draws upon a similar inconsistency present at Il. 3.347 which, together with the allusions to the dynamics of the first clash between Hector and Achilles in Iliad 20, underlines Priam’s distance from the Iliadic epic models. The concept is reinforced by an anti-antiquarian reference to the behaviour of the Roman pilum, which further emphasizes Priam’s inadequacy as a warrior, and rules out any possible epic connotations of his spear-cast.

Résumé :
Tree-chopping in the Aeneid has long been seen as a disturbingly violent symbol of the Trojans' colonization of Italy. The paper proposes a new reading of the poem which sees Aeneas as progressive extirpator not just of foreign rivals but also of his own Trojan relatives. Although the Romans had no family “trees” as such, their genealogical stemmata (“garlands”) had “branches” (rami) and “stock” (stirps), and their vocabulary of family relationships takes many of its metaphors from planting, adoption, and uprooting, while plant life is often described in human metaphors. Imperial historians use the growth and collapse of trees to mark the rise and fall of dynasties; natural historians like Columella and Pliny use metaphors of adoption, abortion, and adultery to characterize the perversions of agriculture and horticulture. It is thus no coincidence that Aeneas' encounters with Hector, Priam, Deiphobus, and others often take place against a background of real or metaphorical trees (tree similes, headless or mutilated human trunks, ancient trees and woods). These encourage us to see an element of dynastic encroachment in scenes that look pious and peaceable but confirm Aeneas' ascendancy and claim to Trojan succession. The Polydorus episode in particular can be read not just as a grotesque interlude but as a nightmare about endlessly reproducing heirs; one loose strand from Priam's house is allowed to remain, while Virgil deals imperfectly with the problem of Aeneas' own successors. The paper ends by re-examining Virgil's account of grafting in Georgics 2 and arguing that it is viewed positively, perhaps in order to cast Augustus' adoption of heirs as a miracle solution.

Résumé :
Homer’s use of the address form δαιµονίη for Hekabe at Iliad 24.194, has been particularly troublesome, and these problems have remained largely unresolved because the word’s etymology, its later use, and its generally negative tone contrast with the otherwise non-confrontational tone of Priam’s speech at Il. 24.194-199. This mismatch has led to a wide range of interpretations, and no general consensus. In this paper I argue that the term here appears to be undergoing grammaticalization in the direction of a discourse particle, and as such does not characterize the addressee but the context of Priam’s subsequent speech. Although use of the term by later authors shows that this process was terminated, nevertheless, the development of δαιµόνιε proposed here patterns with that of other divine address forms such as Latin mehercule! and edepol!, French mon Dieu!, English oh my God!, etc. which have come to function like other discourse particles such as wow!

Résumé :
Kamalia priapus (Schitlmeister, 1997) (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae) is a dangerous species which larva is bark-feeding and damaging Homalium ceylanicum trees in plantations and urban areas in Vietnam. Recent field surveys conducted in the central provinces of Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien Hue in Vietnam highlighted the significant impact of K. priapus on H. ceylanicum trees. Their findings reveal a damage incidence (P%) ranging from 30.6 to 36.5% and damage index (DI) between 1.01 to 1.33 in plantations. Furthermore, effects were observed in urban areas with P% increasing to 39.5–51.3% and DI reaching 1.50–1.68. The extensive damage caused by K. priapus has significantly affected the growth and quality of the trees, resulting in numerous large scars on the trunks of the affected trees. To effectively control the pest, breaking nests and killing the larvae may be helpful. However, it is crucial to implement these methods when the larvae are still young. Future research directions have been proposed to understand the biological and ecological characteristics of K. priapus and developed management solutions to control this pest.

The article is devoted to the role of an adjective in the structure of a compound term, to clarify the motivation of the scientific and professional name, the functioning of terms with a direct component in various fields of knowledge. The following terms are collected from the relevant branch dictionaries, which contain the named adjective, their motivation and internal form, correct and incorrect orientation of terms are considered. Attention is paid to the reflection in the definitions of the named adjective, as well as to the interpretation of the same terms in different industry systems. The прямий adjective is ambiguous. However, it is interpreted differently in common use and in professional use. Only a few values out of eight are embodied in term systems. We highlight the terms with existing and hidden motivation. Existing motivation (intralingual) can focus on the meaning of the concept correctly and incorrectly. The motivation of many terms is perceived differently by professionals and non-specialists, educated and uneducated people. A special, professional meaning may not at all hint at the meaning of the components of the word, and may not be tied to it. In the definitions of the term, the adjective may be repeated, and may be replaced by a synonym, or even be absent, which does not always correctly focus on its meaning.

Résumé :
Introduction: Active surveillance is a strategy to delay or prevent treatment of indolent prostate cancer. The Prostate Cancer Research International: Active Surveillance (PRIAS) criteria were developed to select patients for prostate cancer active surveillance. The objective of this study was to compare pathological findings from PRIAS-eligible and PRIAS-ineligible clinically low-risk prostate cancer patients. Methods: A D’Amico low-risk cohort of 1512 radical prostatectomy patients treated at The Ottawa Hospital or Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre between January 1995 and December 2007 was reviewed. Pathological outcomes (pT3 tumours, Gleason sum ≥7, lymph node metastases, or a composite) and clinical outcomes (prostate-specific antigen [PSA] recurrence, secondary cancer treatments, and death) were compared between PRIAS-eligible and PRIAS-ineligible cohorts. Results: The PRIAS-eligible cohort (n=945) was less likely to have Gleason score ≥7 (odds ratio [OR] 0.61; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.49‒0.75), pT3 (OR 0.41; 95% CI 0.31‒0.55), nodal metastases (OR 0.37; 95% CI 0.10‒1.31), or any adverse feature (OR 0.56; 95% CI 0.45‒0.69) compared to the PRIAS-ineligible cohort. The probability of any adverse pathology in the PRIAS-eligible cohort was 41% vs. 56% in the PRIAS-ineligible cohort. At median followup of 3.7 years, 72 (4.8%) patients had a PSA recurrence, 24 (1.6%) received pelvic radiation, and 13 (0.9%) received androgen deprivation. No difference was detected for recurrence-free and overall survival between groups (recurrence hazard ratio [HR] 0.71; 95% CI 0.46–1.09 and survival HR 0.72; 95% CI 0.36–1.47).Conclusions: Low-risk prostate cancer patients who met PRIAS eligibility criteria are less likely to have higher-risk cancer compared to those who did not meet at least one of these criteria.

Rhetoricians, orators, and public speakers of all stripes, if asked the question, which Greek or Roman deity they should invoke in case of need, would surely answer ‘Hermes’ or ‘Mercury’. Members of this profession who also read early Latin-Old English glossaries might therefore be surprised to learn that the deus oratorum was none other than Priapus! This came as good news to me as one who occasionally looks for novel ways to arouse an audience. However, as I reflected further on the meaning of Épinal Glossary 10v32, my expectations wilted. Oratorum must be a simple error for hortorum, ‘of gardens’. Priapus may be fecundus, but he is not facundus.

Résumé :
Galeus priapus sp. nov. is described from specimens collected on the slopes of the seamounts and ridges of southern New Caledonia and Vanuatu. It is the first Galeus species recorded in these areas. G. priapus is characterised by the presence of a conspicuous crest of enlarged denticles on the dorsal caudal margin, the absence of similar crest on ventral caudal margin, and extremely long and slender claspers in adult males that extend posteriorly to the anal-fin origin. The body coloration, which is plain greyish brown with large dark blotches on dorsal and caudal fins and their bases, closely resembles its sibling G. gracilis, a northern Australian and Indonesian species. An identification key to Indo-Pacific Galeus species is provided.

Résumé :
The article presents Martial’s epigrams nos. 4.4 and 6.93, which form a mini-cycle. They share a common topic, the same motifs and an analogical form of a priamel. In both poems the bad scent of the protagonist (Bassa and Thais) is compared to other unpleasant smells. Among these comparisons there are certain recurring odours: sulphur, fish, goat, leather, dyed material and bad breath. The epigram 4.4 is built as a synthetic priamel, 6.93 is an analytical one. The comparison of this pair of epigrams with another mini-cycle 3.65 and 11.8 lead the author the conclusion that Martial imitates his earlier poems in the ones written later. This phenomenon may be called a peculiar imitatio et aemulatio.

Résumé :
Objective: to study the anatomical-topographical relationship between the prostate gland (PG) and the vascular structures responsible for erection, to justify the new concept of erectile dysfunction pathogenesis after brachytherapy of prostate cancer (PCa).Materials and methods. The study included 66 patients with verified or suspected PCa. All patients performed magnetic resonance imaging 1.5 T in accordance with the established protocol (hybrid method of visualization of internal pudendal arteries (IPA)). 16 patients simultaneously performed computed tomography on a topometric tomography. The resulting images were analyzed using the Eclipse 4.0 (Varian Medical System, USA) system, which provides 3D models of PG, pelvic bones and critical structures of interest: IPA, cavernous crura and penile bulb.Results. The average volume of PG was 44.9 ± 18.7 (14.4—98.0) cm3. The width of penile bulb was 1.83 ± 0.38 (1.1—2.93) cm. According to the implantation technique of in brachytherapy, the damage to penile bulb can be observed in less than a fifth of patients — 18.5 % of cases.Analysis of the 3D models showed that the overlay of the distal third of the IPA on the predominantly anterior and, in part, lateral aspects of the PG was noted in 58 (87.9 %) of 66 observations. The average value of PG in a group with no interference was 25.7 ± 3.9 (18.2—29.9) cm3, with its presence — 47.6 ± 18.4 (14.4—98.0) cm3. The average length of the IPA, coinciding with the projection of the PG on the right and left is virtually no different (p >0.05) and is about 2.5 cm, and the maximum remote point of this combination lies in relation to the outer contour of the gland within 1 cm. The correlation analysis showed a strong direct correlation between the volume of PG with all the parameters of mutual spatial anatomy of the prostate and IPA (R = 0.63—0.71; p <0.0001).Conclusion. The anatomical-topographical relationship between PG and critical structures, among which the IPA plays a special role, points to the likely predominantly traumatic genesis of erectile dysfunction after PCa brachytherapy, as well as a number of other invasive procedures performed by perineal access (saturation biopsy).
