This paper aims at highlighting the twofold role played by the Italian government in the attempt of supporting and motivating the growth of Italian banking activities in the Ottoman Empire, especially in its capital at the end of the first decade of the twentieth century. The activities of Banco di Roma and Società Commerciale d’Oriente will be analysed within a context of disloyal competition, envies and low blows. The paper will also underline the links existing among these institutions and the Italian government, which will remain their reference point in the Ottoman capital and will demonstrate how Italian banking activities in Constantinople, which depended on the bankers’ good relationships with the Italian political circles rather than on their real financial possibilities, were hindered by recurring conflicts and enmities in the national market. The article also aims to fill the historiographical void on the Italian banking activities in the late Ottoman Empire with the results of the research conducted in the historical archives of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bank of Italy and Banco di Roma.

Résumé :
A quantitative-qualitative study was performed to describe outcomes and experiences of women who gave birth in an out-of-hospital setting in Rome, Italy, between 2016 and 2018. A retrospective observational study was carried out through the collection of clinical and healthcare data of 96 women assisted in these 3 years. Among them 9 were transferred to hospital during labour. The main outcomes of the out-of-hospital deliveries (n = 87) were: intact perineum and no third- or fourth-degree perineal tear in 44,8% of cases, delayed cord clamping in 100% of cases (of which 26.4% were lotus birth) and exclusive breastfeeding in 94.3% of cases at 7 days after delivery and 93.3% at 3 and 6 months. The qualitative phase was conducted on 15 women and involved focus groups and in-depth interviews. It emerged that the choice to give birth in an out-of-hospital setting was mainly due to either the couple’s respect for birth physiology and intimacy or a previous negative experience of hospital birth.

Résumé :
The occurrence and the history of Neotropical mammal specimens in the collections of naturalistic museums in Rome, Italy, and their scientific utilization is here reviewed. These specimens belong to several scientific expeditions made after the discovery of the new Continent. The oldest specimens date back to the famous Museum of Athanasius Kircher at the Collegio Romano (1651) and to the Museo Zoologico della Università di Roma that was established inside the University of the Pontificial State (Archigymnasium) (1823). Many of these early specimens are now lost due to the complex history of Roman scientific museology, but some specimens are now available mainly in two institutions, the Museo Civico di Zoologia (established in 1932) and the Museo di Anatomia Comparata “Battista Grassi” of “Sapienza” University of Rome (1935). Among the numerous specimens, is noteworthy the presence of a hairy long-nosed armadillo, Dasypus pilosus, the first record in an Italian zoological collection and the 26th known specimen of this species in world museums. More recently, some Roman researchers have maintained a scientific interest for Neotropical mammals, including primates, with collaboration with South American mammalogists. A greater historical knowledge of scientific activities concerning the work of Italians researchers on Neotropical biodiversity should be pursued.

Résumé :
Abstract The paper presents the evolution and trends in the Master’s-level studies in aerospace engineering in Italy, looking at the past 20 years. In the year 2000, a major reform of the higher education in engineering took place in Italy, with the introduction of the so-called ‘Bologna system’ and the clear separation of Bachelor’s and Master’s degree studies. With this reform, a relatively high flexibility was given to universities to define their programme structures. The ministerial rules defined only broad subject areas within which courses and credits should be allocated. This reform allowed the diversification of the educational profile within each university and, even more relevant, allowed the creation of mobility across the country between Bachelor’s and Master’s study programmes. The paper will show the basic facts and figures in the six Italian universities participating in the Partnership of a European Group of Aeronautics and Space UniversitieS (PEGASUS) network (Politecnico di Milano, Politecnico di Torino, Università di Pisa, Università degli Studi di Napoli ‘Federico II’, Sapienza Università di Roma and Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna), elaborating on the impact of the potential workforce for the sector. Data have been collected from the official open data repository of the Italian Ministry of University, supplemented by information provided by the six universities under analysis. The comparative analysis shows two major results: the positive impact of the reform on the overall Italian higher education and, specifically, a greater appreciation of the aerospace curricula proposed in accordance with the new system.

This study was carried out within the project “Roma Hispana. Nuevas tecnologías aplicadas al estudio histórico, la musealización y la puesta en valor de Patrimonio Cultural español en Roma: la spezieria di Santa Maria della Scala” (Universitat de València Spain), which is funded by the Conselleria d’Innovació, Universitats, Ciència i Societat Digital of the Generalitat Valenciana (2020–2021) and authorized by the Sovrintendenza Speciale Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio (Special Superintendence of Archeology, Fine Arts and Landscape) of Rome, Italy. The spezieria di Santa Maria della Scala was the oldest apothecary in Europe managed by the order of Discalced Carmelite friars. Operating between the second half of the seventeenth century and the mid-twentieth century, over time it acquired great prestige, becoming known as the Pharmacy of the Popes. The aims of the “Roma Hispana” project are to study, musealize and disseminate the material and immaterial cultural heritage of this historical spezieria by combining physicochemical and cultural studies, new 3D technologies, and artificial intelligence. As a case study, in this paper we report the application of a laser scanner prototype for 3D color imaging of the spezieria’s sales room and use a simpler photogrammetry method to collect analogous data in the small nearby storeroom coupled to the high-power capabilities of the ENEA parallel computer facility. Digital data were collected to enable a virtual tour that provides a fully navigable, faithful, high-resolution 3D color model to render this ancient Roman apothecary accessible and usable to interested members of the public and experts in the sector (art historians, restorers, etc.). We also describe the 3D technology used to obtain three-dimensional images of the cultural assets of these spaces (mostly drug containers) and its results. The ultimate aim of this study is to achieve the virtual musealization of the heritage complex.

Résumé :
The health emergency caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has considerably exacerbated situations at risk of social exclusion, leaving many families and children on the “margins”. Children seem to be paying the greatest consequence, in the first place, as they risk seeing their right to participate in quality education limited. In light of this premise, in this article we will present the results of a research-training experience carried out in partnership with Save the Children within Mothers’ Spaces in Rome and Brindisi, Italy, in order to illustrate how the educational action of these services can be a useful starting point for reflecting on educational actions capable of actively involving children and families and orienting post-emergency educational practices towards social inclusion. In particular, we will focus on the actions taken with regard to the 0-6 age group, which has been considered the one most at risk compared to the problems caused by the pandemic, focusing attention on activities to contain the Learning Loss caused by the prolonged closure of ECEC services during the lockdown.

Résumé :
This paper introduces the Geophysical Museum of Rocca di Papa (Roma, Italy) where visitors can encounter a fascinating journey towards the Earth's core. The aim of the Museum, which was founded on February 26th 2005, is to make the language of Geophysics friendlier and to show the relationship between science and science fiction. The Geophysical Museum is housed in the historical Geodynamic Observatory, built in 1889 by the famous seismologist Michele Stefano De Rossi. The Museum explains the main topics of Geophysics through the use of posters, movie presentations and interactive experiments and presents the stages of scientific research that led to the modern definition of the Earth's internal model. The main focus of the Museum has been school students of all ages, with eight thousand visitors in two years. The Museum connects geophysics to the world of nature and by using science fiction techniques, shows that science is not only the product of certainty or established facts, but also the product of trials and failures. Visitors will find special importance given to seismology, with a special section of ancient and modern seismographs. There is also a room dedicated to a three-dimensional projection system where the visitor can enjoy movies about Alban Hills earthquakes to appreciate the geological evolution of volcanism in this area. Résumé :
The present Special Issue of The Open Civil Engineering Journal collects a selection of extended, reviewed and revised papers presented at the 1st FIMM French-Italian Meeting on Masonry, held in Marseille, France, from 24 to 25 October 2013. The organizers of the meeting were Prof. F. Lebon, Université d'Aix-Marseille Laboratoire de Mécanique et d'Acoustique (FR), and Prof E. Sacco, Università di Cassino e del Lazio Meridionale (IT). The main aim was to exchange new ideas and show the state of the art of different research groups active in France and Italy, two countries at the top of the world for the research on masonry. Universities involved were: Université d'Aix-Marseille (FR), Université de Montpellier 2 (FR), Université de Limoges (FR), Politecnico di Milano (IT), Università di Roma la Sapienza (IT), Università di Ferrara (IT), Università di Cassino e del Lazio Meridionale (IT). A Scopus enquire with keyword “masonry” ordered by country shows 1609 records for Italy and 274 for France, with a percentage contribution respectively of 12.5% and 2.1% on the global scientific production, putting thus in evidence the importance of a tight interaction between French and Italian research groups. After the success of the first edition, the 2nd FIMM French-Italian Meeting on Masonry, will take place in Milan, Italy, from 30 to 31 October 2014. The special issue collects three papers. Fouchal et al. [1] present an evolution of the interface model originally presented by Rekik and Lebon, including cracks and roughness, with a comparison with experimental data on specimens subjected to shear tests. In the second paper, Tralli et al. [2] report a comprehensive state of the art on the cutting edge numerical research devoted to masonry vaults. Finally, Addessi et al. [3] review some advanced homogenization, micro- and macro-modelling strategies suitable for the analysis of masonry in the inelastic range. I wish to thank all the authors for their valuable contributions. All manuscripts underwent technical peer review. I therefore also wish to thank all the reviewers for their critical comments which undoubtedly improved the original technical value of all contributions.

Résumé :
Abstract Angelo Secchi, an Italian Jesuit and prominent scientist of the 19th century, and one of the founders of modern astrophysics, observed the Sun regularly at the Collegio Romano in Rome, Italy, for more than 25 yr. Results from his observations are reported in articles published in the scientific journals of the time, as well as in drawings and personal notebooks that are stored in the historical archive of the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica Osservatorio Astronomico di Roma. The latter material, which reports solar observations performed from 1853–1878, includes original documents from Secchi and from a few of his close collaborators. The above unique material has recently been digitized for preservation purposes and for allowing the scientific exploitation of data not easily accessible so far. A total of more than 5400 digital images have been produced. Here we present the archival material and the new digital data derived from it. We also present results obtained from our primary analysis of the new digital data. In particular, we produced new measurements of the group number from 1853–1878, which will be available for future recalibration of the group number series.

Résumé :
The purpose of this paper is to describe a short term study abroad program that exposes engineering and nursing undergraduate students from the United States and Italy to an intercultural and interprofessional immersion experience . Faculty fr om Purdue University and Sapienza Università di Roma collaborated to design a technical program that demonstrates the complementary nature of engineering and public health in the service sector, with Rome as an integral component of the program. S pecifically, the intersection of topics including systems, reliability, process flow, maintenance management, and public health are covered through online lectures, in class activities and case study discussions, field experiences, and assessments. Here in, administrat ive issues such as student recruitment, selection, and preparation are elucidated. Additionally, the pedagogical approach used to ensure constructive alignment among the program goals, the intended learning outcomes, and the teaching and learning activitie s is described. Finally, examples of learning outcomes resulting from this alignment are provided.

Résumé :
Little has been written about Ezra Pound's extensive contributions to the Rome-based paper Meridiano di Roma between 1938 and 1943, though they provide important insight into the poet's thinking and state of mind during the last years of the Italian regime. I discussed these pieces in a preliminary way back in 1984 (in my Ezra Pound: Politics, Economics and Writing) but there has been surprisingly little interest in them since (even Robert Casillo's authoritative The Genealogy of Demons: Anti-Semitism, Fascism, and the Myths of Ezra Pound [1988] largely ignores them). The present essay explores the context and content of these pieces, looking especially at the selection Pound published under the title Orientamenti, a volume quickly destroyed when the Allies occupied Italy. Key issues are Pound's equivocal relation to the Italian regime, the obsessive, ideological cast of his thinking at this time, and his peculiarly restricted sense of what was happening at this climatic moment in modern history.

Résumé :
Abstract. Modern terrestrial laser scanners and photogrammetric imaging systems can provide highly accurate and objective as-built records of existing architectural, engineering, and industrial sites. This comprehensive digital recording benefits culturally significant places like heritage buildings, monuments, and other vital structures. The collected data can be instrumental in various ways, including aiding in conservation, management, monitoring and repair efforts and serving as an educational resource for scholars and the general public. These technical capabilities are especially well-suited for architecturally complex, ornate buildings like the Aachen Cathedral UNESCO World Heritage site. This paper describes the recent recording efforts at the Aachen Cathedral and is a comparative study of the previous documentation work done at the Cologne Cathedral. The 3D documentation of the Aachen Cathedral UNESCO World Heritage Site is an ongoing collaborative project between the Sapienza Università di Roma, Rome, Italy, Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland, and in partnership with RWTH Aachen University, and the Dombauhütte Aachen.

Résumé :
Résumé :
Analyzed the institutional and organizational support of educational activities of higher education institutions in Italy in the specialty “Tourism”, which is the key to the successful functioning of educational activities. The regulatory legal acts of Italian higher education institutions included in the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (as of 2020), including the legal framework of the Italian higher education system, statutory and intra-university documents, and the like, have been investigated. The institutional and organizational support of the educational activities of Italian higher education institutions is characterized and their features are revealed. The goals of educational programs in the specialty “Tourism” of each of the rating higher education institutions are clarified and the analysis of the main professional orientations of the graduates of the corresponding universities is carried out. The purpose of the article. Highlight the institutional and organizational support of educational activities of Italian universities, which train specialists in «Tourism», by solving problems on the analysis of legal documents of such free economic zones, presentation of institutional and organizational support of educational activities and identifying their features. The study used theoretical and empirical research methods, including: analysis of the implemented statutory documents in the Italian higher education system; analysis of the peculiarities of the autonomy of Italian universities; comparison of the legal basis for the educational activities of Italian universities. Thus, it was found that the institutional basis of the educational activities of the Free Economic Zone of Italy in public and private ownership are the statutory documents and internal university regulations, which are based on regulations approved by the Italian government. Such documents in each of the five free economic zones are SAPIENZA Università degli Studi di Roma “La Sapienza”; University of Roma Studies «Tor Vergata»; University of Genoa Studies; University of Perugia Studies; Università degli Studi di Catania – became: university statute; regulations on administration, finance and accounting; general organizational provisions of the university; code of ethics; rules of conduct for employees; educational regulations of the university, etc. In the case of the structural units of the Italian Free Economic Zones, they are largely identical, comprising the Rector, the Academic Senate, the Board of Directors and the Administrative Departments, and are funded by tuition fees and financial assistance from public and private universities from the Italian Ministry of Education. (Ministero dell'Istruzione, dell'Università e della Ricerca – MIUR) and the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Italy (Ministero dell'Economia e delle Finanze). As for the peculiarities of educational training «Tourism», their goals, requirements and professional orientation are more identical in all free economic zones – is the training of highly qualified personnel in the field of tourism, on entry, the presence of a document of complete secondary education and the possibility of further employment in tourism enterprises. own business, etc.

Aim of th study: we wanted to determine the cumulative incidence of GvHD and its outcome, in 3 periods :<2000; 2000-2010; >2010, together with predicting factors. Methods: we analyzed 3126 patients allografted in 2 transplant Centers between 1976 and 2018. Median age increased over the 3 periods from 32 (1-66) to 42 years (9-71) to 50 years (range13-74) (<0.00001). Results GvHD timing : The median day of onset of GvHD before year 2000 was day +14 (2-90), between 2001 and 2010 it was day +19 (2-98) and beyond year 2010 it was day +33 (2-98) (p<0.0001). There were 237 patients developing GvHD before day 14 before year 2000, 71 patients between 2001 and 2010 and only 8 patients beyond 2010 (p<0-0001). GvHD cumulative incidence. The cumulative incidence (CI) of GvHD grade II-IV was 47% before 2000, 24% between 2000 and 2010, and 16% after 2010 (p<0.00001). The CI of GvHD grade III-IV was 13%, 5%, 4% respectively in the three periods (p<0.001). Survival at 5 years of patients with GvHD grade II has remained unchanged in the 3 periods (52%, 44%, 55%, respectively , p=0.2); survival of patients with GvHD grade III-IV has improved from 15%, to 30% and 23% respectively (p=0.003). GvHD and donor type. The incidence of GvHD grade II-IV in HLA identical siblings (SIBS) was 25%, 19% and 14% in the 3 periods (p=0.0005), and for alternative donors, these figures were 43%, 34%, 21% (p<0.00001). Transplant related mortality (TRM). The CI of TRM for patients with grade II GvHD has not changed significantly (27%, 25%, 20%, p=0.1) whereas TRM for patients with GvHD grade III-IV has been reduced from 70% (<2000) to 49% (2001-2010) to 26% beyond year 2010 (p=0.002). Multivariate analysis on survival for patients with grade II GvHD . Significant predictors of survival, for patients with GvHD grade II, were the day of onset of acute GvHD (</>day 14), advanced phase of the disease, transplant year before year 2000, patients age over 60, and a donor other than an HLA identical sibling. When adding together these negative predictors , the 5 year survival was 28% for patients with 3-5 negative predictors, as compared to 56% for patients with 0-2 negative predictors Conclusions. We show a very significant reduction of the CI of GvHD with time, together with a very significant delay of the onset of the disease. TRM has been reduced in patients with grade III-IV GvHD, less so in patients with GvHD grade II. In the latter significant clinical predictors may allow the identification of patients at high risk, eligible for treatment protocols. Disclosures No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Résumé :
The aim of this work is to improve urban traffic viability through an appropriate choice of yielding and stop signs or red and green phases for traffic lights in junctions with two entering and one exiting roads (junctions of 2×1 type). We consider a macroscopic fluid-dynamic model able to capture the traffic evolution. We analyze different functionals measuring networks performance in terms of average velocity, average traveling time, total flux, density, stop and go waves, average traveling time, weighted with the number of cars moving on roads, and kinetic energy. Right of way parameters which optimize the latter two functionals are obtained. Simulations of simple junctions of 2×1type have been used to test the correctness of the analytical results. Then, global performance of optimization procedures has been investigated on Re di Roma Square, in Italy. In particular, we discuss cases in which the functionals are optimized locally at each junction for different values of right of way parameters. We show that for the chosen initial data the only algorithm for the maximization of velocity assures globally the best performance for the network, also in terms of average traveling times and kinetic energy.

Résumé :
In the present work, more than one hundred and thirty lithic artefacts rediscovered in several archaeological sites dating from the Upper Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages from Calabria (Southern Italy) were petroarchaeometrically characterised through minimally invasive techniques. In more detail, 110 specimens were found in the Grotta della Monaca site (Sant’Agata di Esaro), and the other 23 belong to a collection kept in the Museo Nazionale Preistorico ed Etnografico “Luigi Pigorini” (Roma), coming from several localities (Longobucco, Spezzano della Sila, Cicala, Gimigliano, Roccaforte del Greco, and Bova). For preservation needs, 2 small axes in polished stone and 2 obsidians collected from Grotta della Monaca were analysed by absolutely non-destructive techniques. Optical and electron microscopic investigations, sometimes integrated with wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction spectrometry, allowed us to ascertain that the source area of all the lithic tools was in Calabria, except for obsidians, which come from the island of Lipari (Messina, Southern Italy). For a small number of particularly favourable cases, it was possible to define with great precision the outcrop area of the used rocks given their textural and mineralogical features. The specific source area contained a pickaxe originating from Cetraro–Fuscaldo metabasalt (lawsonite–albite facies) outcrops and two small axes in polished stone, one derived from migmatitic metapelites from Palmi and the other from meta-ultramafic rocks from Curinga. The choice of the used lithologies, harder or softer, had to be linked to the use that humans had to make of the lithic artefacts.

Résumé :
In the presented article the author analyses depictions of sieges and capturesof Rome in the years 408-410 and 455 passed on by selected authors of Latin andGreek sources from the late antique. The scope of the research included sourcescontaining more extensive narratives, while sources containing only laconicannual information solely about the fact of capturing the city were rejected. Inthe depictions of the capture of Rome by Alaric in 410 the authors rather tendto seek supernatural reasons, and less often logical explanations of the origin ofthe events, contrary to the depictions of the year 455, where one can find almostexclusively rational justifications for the course of events, determined by politicalsituation. While discussing the events of the year 410 the authors oftentimescreate their own original digressions and allow for deviations from the historicreality. The relations about the year 455 are consistent and show only minor differences.Contrary to later opinions, the capture of Rome in 410 was not considereda gigantic tragedy outside Italy, although it was recognized as a breakthroughmoment. For the eastern historians these events are remote, taking place in landsfar from Constantinople and often their depiction is used to indicate the superiorityof the Eastern Empire over the Western Empire. Sacco di Roma by Genseric in455, which is referred more precisely and recognized as an element of significanthistory and politics of the East (Vandals corsair raids, Leo the Thracian’s expedition, recapturing Africa during the reign of Justinian I), is treated in an entirelydifferent manner.

Résumé :
The economic crisis generated by the current Covid-19 has scratched many of the certainties consolidated in the past, highlighting the fragility of the economic system and the need for a more efficient management of the investments. Extreme events, whether environmental, social, health and economic, trigger off shocks to which it is necessary to promptly react. Starting from these premises, many institutional investors are directing their capitals towards environmental interventions. In the real estate field this translates into promoting initiatives to improve the efficiency of the existing building heritage, in line with the concept of Circular Economy, and avoiding soil sealing. In the present research a composite indicator that allows to analyze the performance of different real estate investments (e.g. new construction, demolition and reconstruction, renovation, etc.) has been proposed. The performance is assessed with respect to the expected profitability, the specific characteristics of the market in which the initiatives are located and the different risk-return profiles that characterize the investors. The case study, relating to two different investments located in Rome (Italy), has allowed to test the effectiveness and the limits of the proposed indicator and the possible application fields.

Ulf G. Haxen: Rome – Cradle of the Hebrew Book The Royal Library in Copenhagen has, throughout the twentieth century, received two substantial collections of Hebraica and Judaica. In 1933 the library acquired the private library of chief rabbi and professor David Simonsen, which amounted to an impressive 40,000 manuscripts, books and correspondence of scholarly importance. Dr. Lazarus Goldschmidt escaped Nazi Germany in 1938 and managed to bring his 2,500 volumes of Hebraica and Judaica, including 43 immaculate and well preserved incunables, safely to London. His entire collection of rare Hebrew books was purchased by the Royal Library for a moderate sum in 1949 because Goldschmidt was “honoured to have his books incorporated in Bibliotheca Simonseniana.”Both scholars were recognised authorities in their own right, Simonsen as philologist in Semitics and specialist in Jewish booklore, and Goldschmidt as a renowned bibliophile and connoisseur of 15th century Hebraic incunables. His 46 rare incunables were eventually listed in Victor Madsen’s catalogue of incunables (1935–1963).The art of printing was born c.1455 in Mainz (Germany) with Johan Gutenberg’s printed edition of the bible. Among scholars it was generally believed that migrating Christian and Jewish apprentices carried the revolutionising “black art” of printing from Mainz to Spain and Italy. Coincidentally enough, the first two dated Hebrew works appeared in print thirty years after Gutenberg in the exact same year in southern and northern Italy respectively: these being the Rashi commentary on the Jewish bible issued 17th February 1475 in Reggia di Calabria and printed by Abraham Garton ben Isaac, and the Arba’ah turim in Piove di Sacco near Venezia published by Meshullam Cusi on 3rd July 1475.These two books were for a long time considered to be the first books printed with Hebrew types. The famous Christian scholar of Hebraica, Giambernardo de Rossi, who was the fortunate owner of the allegedly “first” cradle book from Reggia, subsequently published the first census of Hebrew incunables in Annales hebraica-typographica saeculi XV (1795). The scene was thus set for the future scholarly research of the undated incunables labelled “Roma, ante 1480” (Rome, before 1480) by de Rossi. The present essay discusses five of these incunables, all of which are described in Victor Madsen’s catalogue as printed in “Roma, ante 1480”; an approximated date which needs correcting. David Simonsen refers in passing to “the three printers of Rome” viz. Obadiah, Menasseh and Benjamin, as supposedly having been active in a printing press in Rome. The incunable with Salomon ben Abraham ibn Aderet (Raschba) Teschubot sche’elot. (“Answers to Questions”) dated “before 1980” is a case in point (#4332 in Victor Madsen’s catalogue), furnished with an earlier approximate publishing date c.1469–1472 no. 55 in the Offenberg census (1990) and eventually with REX online catalogue Inc. Haun in 2015.The best known printing press in Rome was created by the two German printers Conrad Sweynheym & Arnold Pannartz who established their first workshop at Santa Scolastica at Subiaco in the Sabine Mountains outside Rome in 1464, where they published several unique Latin works and introduced a Greek typeface. In 1467 they moved the press to the city of Rome in order to get closer to the reading and profitable public. In 1467 they moved the press to Rome in order to get closer to their reading public – and their profits. Here they were privileged to be housed in Palazzo Massimo by the proprietors Pietro and Francesco Massimo. What is more, they began working under the patronage of the respected humanist Giovanni Andrea Bussi, who was editor in charge. It is safe to conjecture that the Hebrew press was born in this milieu, as indeed suggested by Edwin Hall: “… a casual remark of Bussi in the preface to the Latin Bible hints at a possible connection between Sweynheym and Pannartz and what are thought to be the earliest printed books in Hebrew. These books, which contain no indication of date or place of printing, are the work of obscure printers named Obadiah, Manasseh, and Benjamin de Roma and constitute the most primitive surviving examples of printing in Italy.”I thank Dr. Ann Brener, Specialist in the Hebraic Section at the Library of Congress for supplying additional bibliographic references.

Résumé :
This article looks into the representations of the Italian literary salon in the print press during the 1880s. Special attention will be given to Matilde Serao’s mediation in the private as well as in the public sphere and to her double role as salon chronicler and salon attendee. Her views with regard to the artistic and political landscape of fin de siecle Italy will be examined through a series of chronicles on Pasquale Mancini, Baroness Magliani, Francesco De Renzis and the salon of the literary magazine Capitan Fracassa. The representations of these salons in the fortnightly periodical Cronaca Bizantina (Rome, 1881–1886) as well as in the daily newspaper Corriere di Roma (1883–1886) offered a new reading experience to a wide audience and encouraged the creation of an imagined community of salon attendees. Thus, salon participation will be studied through the prism of the periodical press, which interpreted salon life as a meaningful collective experience and a decisive factor in the formation of culture. Serao’s chronicle will also be viewed as an instrument of social critique, which raised questions on the rapid expansion of mass media, the growing demand for human progress, the withering away of politics and the growing importance of art as a means of personal expression.

Résumé :
С. Résumé :
This essay analyses the evolution of the Holocaust film genre in Italy through the paradigm of sacrifice, understood both as a process of martyrisation and Christianisation of the Holocaust, and from the point of view of the instrumental use of the figure of the national hero. Using the examples of the opening sequence of the deicide and the metaphorical crucifixion of Matteo Blumenthal at the end ofL’ebreo errante(The Wandering Jew, Goffredo Alessandrini, 1948); the sacrifice of Giulia inL’oro di Roma(The Gold of Rome, Carlo Lizzani, 1961), who follows her Jewish nature faced with the round-up of 16 October 1943 – the same fate suffered by Edith, the Parisian Jew inKapò(Gillo Pontecorvo, 1959); and the self-inflicted death of Guido, the narrative device used to justify the survival of the son inLa vita è bella(Life Is Beautiful, Roberto Benigni, 1997), this contribution will focus on the definition of the Christianised topos of sacrifice, connected to the conception and general use of the term ‘Holocaust’. The overall thesis, running through the analysis of these four films, is that the paradigm has contributed significantly to the creation of a context of conflicting memories, influencing therefore the formation of the religious, cultural, political or national identities that have been involved historically in the public and private memory of the Holocaust.
