Résumé :
OBJECTIVE: Popular (i.e., nonclassical) musicians have higher rates of mental health disorders and mental health service utilization than the general population. Little is known, however, about how popular musicians perceive mental health interventions in terms of overall satisfaction and therapeutic benefit. METHODS: An online client satisfaction survey was sent to all musicians and family members who received mental health services through a nonprofit mental health organization in Austin, Texas, between July 2014 and June 2015 (n=628). RESULTS: 260 individuals (41.4%) responded to the survey, of whom 94% (n=244) were musicians. A majority of musician respondents were male (60%) and white (82%). 87% received counseling, 32% received psychiatric medication treatment, and 8% received addiction recovery services. 97% of musicians (205/211) rated their counselor as ‘very good’ or ‘excellent,’ 88% (64/79) rated their psychiatric providers as ‘very good’ or ‘excellent,’ and 94% (17/19) rated their addiction recovery specialists as ‘very good’ or ‘excellent’ (nonsignificant between all categories, p>0.05). 89% of musicians receiving counseling, 84% receiving psychiatric medication treatment, and 95% receiving addiction recovery services agreed or strongly agreed that their symptoms and overall functioning improved as a result of their treatment (nonsignificant between all categories, p>0.05). CONCLUSION: Popular musicians express strong provider satisfaction and overall benefit when mental health interventions are accessible, affordable, and delivered by professionals familiar with their concerns. More research is needed to understand the unique psychosocial stresses popular musicians face to inform treatment planning for this high-risk, underserved population.

Su, Meng-Xu, Zhan-Jiang Han, Ying Liu, Zhen Zhao et Jia-Ju Wu. « Compensatory Growth and Physiological Protective Mechanisms of Popular talassica Kom. × Popular euphratica Oliv. in Response to Leaf Damage ». Forests 14, no 9 (25 août 2023) : 1713. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/f14091713.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The compensatory growth and defensive capabilities of woody plants after damage are crucial to their large-scale promotion and economic value. Here, Popular talassica × Popular euphratica were subjected to artificial defoliation treatments that simulated leaf damage [25% (D25), 50% (D50), and 75% (D75) leaf removal] to study the growth, anatomical, and physiological characteristics. The results showed that D25 and D50 treatments significantly increased the growth parameters, such as leaf length, leaf area, and specific leaf area, but did not affect the distributions of root and stem biomasses compared with the CK. However, the D75 treatment significantly decreased most growth parameters. The time required for the chlorophyll content to recover increased along with the damage intensity as follows: D25, high-flat-high; D50, low-high-flat; and D75, low-flat-high. Furthermore, leaf damage significantly reduced stomatal density, whereas the stomatal width, area, opening, and Pn significantly increased by 8.59%, 8.40%, 23.27%, and 31.22%, respectively, under the D50 treatment, generating a photosynthetic compensation response. The leaf anatomical parameters increased along with damage intensity, except spongy tissue thickness, which decreased, while the stem anatomical parameters showed trends of first increasing and then decreasing, reaching maxima under the D50 treatment. The enzymes showed an increasing and then decreasing trend as the damage time increased. After 1 d of treatment, CAT, POD, and PAL activities peak at D75, in contrast to a peak of SOD activity at D50. Overall, these findings indicate that it is advisable to keep the amount of leaf damage within 50%. The leaf damage can have an impact on the growth of P. talassica × P. euphratica. They adjusted their resource allocation strategy and physiological defense capacity by increasing the chlorophyll content, improving photosynthetic capacity, changing stem and leaf anatomy, and increasing defense enzyme activity levels, thereby improving their damage tolerance and adaptability.

Résumé :
OBJECTIVE: To identify popular beliefs regarding the treatment of senile cataract in patients enrolled in the community health programs on eye rehabilitation. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was carried out using an interview questionnaire that was applied to 776 subjects drawn from a non-probabilistic sample in five cities of the state of São Paulo. The sample was made up of 47.2% males and 52.8% females, aged 50 to 96 years (average age 71.6 years). RESULTS: Of the total of subjects studied, 41.9% had never attended school, and 78.5% were no longer in the employment market. Most (85.1%) credited the sight restoration to cataract surgery. Among those unconvinced, 47.4% asserted that sight restoration depended only on God's will. A greater proportion of women than men (p 0.0000) believed in the association of cataract and menopause, maternity, and menstrual periods and they admitted using herbal and rose teas for treating cataract. CONCLUSIONS: Misbeliefs related to the causes and treatment of senile cataract were identified, most probably of sociocultural basis, indicating the need of education on the subject.

Résumé :
Objectives. The aim of this study was to determine current physiotherapy practice in private clinics across the UK in the management of whiplash-associated disorder (WAD) injuries. Design. All treatment reports provided to a private health care company between January 2008 and July 2010 (N=365) were included and analysed to determine the following: the treatments favoured in the management of whiplash; the number of sessions used on average; and the main reasons for discharge. Results. Joint mobilisations, stretches and mobility exercises were favoured in the management of acute whiplash treatment and were used in 74%, 68% and 61% of cases, respectively. The most popular treatments in chronic whiplash, in order of preference, were: stretches (73%), joint mobilisations (69%) and soft-tissue massage (63%). On average, physiotherapists used 4.46 sessions and 7.21 modalities per patient. Although the outcome measures were limited to reason for discharge, the majority of patients were discharged because of ‘treatment complete/self management sufficient’, which may be assumed to be a favourable recovery for 79% of patients. Conclusion. This study found that physical therapists across the UK generally use evidence-based modalities in the treatment of whiplash. However, there remains a need to emphasise and embrace a more educational and active approach to the management of these injuries. The study recommends a protocol for treating WAD that includes supplementing therapeutic modalities with an exercise component, and routinely providing information and advice to ‘act as usual’.

Résumé :
Light-emitting diode treatments are an established therapy in many medical aesthetic clinics. Most machines are designed for facial treatment and work by non-thermal photobiomodulation-stimulating fibroblast proliferation, collagen synthesis and growth factors. They use mainly blue, red and near infrared light and are efficacious in treating acne, psoriasis, photorejuvenation and wound healing. The treatment has relatively few side effects and has a short downtime. They tend to be used in combination with other treatment modalities, such as radiofrequency, skin-tightening and lasers, but can be used as a standalone treatment. Treatment protocols vary but usually require several treatments over a few weeks, with the effects taking 3 to 6 months to become evident. Recently, light-emitting diode masks have become popular, but their evidence base for effectiveness is currently weak.

Résumé :
Light therapy (LT) has become increasingly popular in various countries around the world in the last decade. For instance, according to a recent survey carried out in Germany in 1992, 13% (n = 56) of all German psychiatric hospitals (n = 422) used LT for different treatment indications and another 8% indicated their interest to do so. Among university facilities LT is even more popular, with a percentage of 57%. Although the most frequently used treatment indication for LT is seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or its subsyndromal form (S-SAD) it is apparent that other forms of depression e.g. non-seasonal forms, either acute or chronic are also a target for this new treatment modality. There is a number of studies supporting the use of LT for SAD (for review), however there are just a few studies for non-seasonal depression or for the other treatment indications (for review).

Résumé :
Influenza viruses cause acute respiratory infections responsible for significant mortality and morbidity around the world. Various factors, such as antigenic drift, allow influenza strains to avoid being fully suppressed by seasonal vaccines. This has led to the increased scrutiny of antivirals as treatment and prophylaxis options for seasonal outbreaks and potential pandemics. Unfortunately, many influenza antivirals suffer from a lack of adequate clinical trials, as well as a lack of toxicity data. This is especially true of umifenovir (arbidol), a drug popularly used for the prevention and treatment of influenza strains in China and Russia. Neuraminidase inhibitors, though widely prescribed, display a potential for future resistance. Adamantanes, while proven to be effective in treating influenza A, are already encountering rapid and widespread cross-resistance and are effectively obsolete. Baloxavir marboxil, a newer antiviral, shows promise in treating acute uncomplicated influenza and may avoid the development of resistance when co-administered with other antiviral drugs. Indeed, the low genetic barrier to resistance associated with influenza antivirals could potentially be overcome by co-administration with other antivirals. This review explores the most widely prescribed antivirals for influenza treatment, their mechanisms of action, and the data currently available about their susceptibility to resistance and efficacy.

Coffee, one of the most popular beverages in modern world, is obtained from the beans of perennial bush Coffea. The distinctive aroma and taste of coffee is obtained by thermal treatment (roasting) of raw coffee beans. There are different degrees of roasting that can be divided according to the color of the grain: easy, medium, dark and Italian. The most famous types of coffee used in the production of beverages are Arabica and Robusta. Raw coffee beans contain a certain amount of caffeine, sugar, essential oil, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Roasting the grains leads to the loss of dry matter through formation of carbon dioxide, water and volatile products of pyrolysis. Coffee also has a moderate healing effect, while in overdoses it causes rapid heartbeat, insomnia, even euphoria.

AbstractThe study of medieval European popular religion is broad and diverse, drawing upon a variety of sources and addressing a multiplicity of questions. Underlying that diversity, however, is a single quest: to unearth and analyze religion as it was experienced and practiced by the "common folk".1 For the past twenty years women have been explicitly and deliberately included in that analysis. Evident in the literature, however, are diverse and divergent opinions concerning both the ways by which to ascertain and interpret women's practices and beliefs, and their significance for the study of popular religion. This article explores those opinions and some of their implications.

Résumé :
A product’s utility has evolved over time. In today’s world, the commodities possess the power to define us. Every product that we own today, through its branding, reflects our social status, values and vice versa. It is difficult to refute the negative influence of capitalism that we witness in form of obsession with possession. The aim of the paper is to study the extent to which the products of the modern society like the protagonists in the following two movies suffer; whether it is possible to imagine an end of consumerism and not the world or has it become an inherent part of the late capitalist world in which there is no completeness but the perennial emergence of substitutes (objects). This paper studies the aforementioned issues through the movies “Fight Club” and “Confessions of a Shopaholic”. The first section of the paper uses the case of soap industry as the foundation and analyses “Fight Club”. The second section examines the role of credit card companies in compulsive buying disorder through “Confessions of a Shopaholic”. Despite the similarity between the two movies on the grounds of the modern world “suffering”, the paper highlights the difference in their treatment of the main theme of consumerism and links it to the gender politics. The final section draws a comparison between the endings of the two movies and investigates the premise of disorder in “Fight Club” and its existential threat to capitalism.

Résumé :
Part 1 of this review [MPPA 1999;14:171-9] described the overall goals of the paper as follows: to increase the reader’s understanding of what types of common psychological problems popular musicians face; how individual, family, and sociocultural factors interact in the development and maintenance of these problems; and how interventions need to address all of these factors. The ecological transactional model developed by developmental psychologists Cicchetti and Toth was presented as the contextual background for understanding the development of an individual’s psychological resiliency or vulnerability to symptoms. The model posits four interacting levels as crucial to an individual’s “ecology”: the self, the family, the community, and the culture. The first part of this review explored aspects of each of these levels, including occupational risk factors as characteristic of the community and culture of popular musicians. Part 1 ended with a brief discussion of the creative process, similarly from an interactive systems perspective.

The break-up of socialist Yugoslavia caused, among other things, the dissolution of a common past of people who lived on that territory. Newly independent states were needed a new past for creating a new collective identities. This need caused a powerful wave of reinterpretation of history but also the specific attitude towards the recent socialist past. As these processes have had a relatively wide scale, that also reflected on popular culture, what can be seen in the case of films, as one of the most important segments of popular culture. In this regard, it will be considered the ways in which treated socialist past in terms of criticism or nostalgia in films made during the last decade of the twentieth century in the countries formed after the breakup of socialist Yugoslavia.

According to the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2021 report, between 720 and 811 million people in the world faced hunger. Therefore, transforming food systems for food security, improved nutrition and affordable healthy diets for all is important issue in the fight against hunger. Healthy diets can also play a considerable role in increasing the sustainability of food systems. But can all healthy diets also be considered sustainable diets? Sustainable diets are low in environmental effects, culturally acceptable, accessible, economically viable, nutritionally adequate, safe, and healthy. As can be understood from the definition, being healthy can actually be considered as one of the conditions necessary for the sustainability of diets. While examining diets in terms of sustainability, aspects such as environmental effects, cultural acceptability and economic accessibility should also be evaluated. The aim of this review is to evaluation sustainability of popular diets eaten for their health effects, applied by many people to achieve weight loss, or to prevent or provide treatment for various diseases.

Résumé :
INTRODUCTION: It has been well documented that schizophrenia presents a better clinical course in developing countries. Although there are many epidemiological studies showing this association, little research has been conducted to investigate the local representation systems for schizophrenia in these countries. OBJECTIVES: This study focuses on cultural factors of schizophrenia, namely the local representation systems for the disease, as well as what is locally understood as deviant behavior and its acceptability, and mechanisms of social-cultural insertion or exclusion of patients with schizophrenia in Cape Verde, Africa. METHODS: Randomized open interviews were carried out with the relatives of patients under treatment at the mental health out patient service of the Batista de Sousa Hospital (São Vicente Island) between the years 1994 and 1995. Interviews dealt with patients' life histories and disease related to problems, strategies employed by the family to cope with such problems, and comments on the social and family burden. RESULTS: 20 interviews with close relatives of 10 patients were analyzed. The study focused on three main categories explaining schizophrenia: "tired head" (cabeça cansada), "nervous" (nervoso), and supernatural categories (like "sorcery" or "witchcraft"). The interviewees expressed their opinions, either explicitly or not, on whether their relatives truly had a disease. CONCLUSION: Characteristics of local categories for schizophrenia found in Cape Verde can be regarded as a less stigmatized way of dealing with the disease. It is reasonable to suppose that the understanding of such cultural factors could lead to better outcomes in the treatment for schizophrenia in this country, and also in others, where similar conditions can be identified.

Résumé :
The study on development of solid termite bait matrix and its efficacy against the Heterotermes indicola was performed in the Termite Laboratory, Entomology Division, Nuclear Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA), Peshawar, during 2023. The study was performed with completely randomized design (CRD) with different treatments i.e., developed bait, patent bait, popular wood and blotting paper. Each treatment was replicated three times. The laboratory experiment consisted of no-choice, free choice and aggregation test. While the semi-field experiment consisted of free choice test. During the no-choice test of the laboratory experiment, H. indicola showed a consumption rate of 6.29% for the popular wood and developed bait. However, in the blotting paper treatment, the termites consumed only 2.81%. In terms of choice test conducted in the lab, the popular wood exhibited the highest weight consumption percentage of 2.87%, while the patent bait displayed the lowest weight consumption percentage of 2.25%. Under the choice test maximum number of termites were attracted towards popular wood (77.00 Number of termites) while minimum number of termites were attracted towards patent bait (54.66 Number of termites). Whereas, in aggregation test, of the lab experiment, maximum number of termites were also aggregated towards popular wood (37.77 Number of termites) while minimum termites were aggregated for patent bait (25.22 Number of termites). In the case of free choice under semi-field conditions, the highest number of termites were observed on popular wood i.e., 380.00 followed by the developed bait, which recorded 293.50 termites. On the other hand, the lowest number of termites were recorded on the patent bait i.e., 231.50. Similarly, when considering the maximum consumed weight in percentage, popular wood exhibited the highest value at 16.24%, closely followed by the developed bait at 15.67% while the patent bait displayed minimum consumed weight percentage of 12.89%. In overall experiments it is concluded that among all the tested treatments, termites mostly consumed popular wood and developed bait. Since the developed bait showed promising results in attracting termites, it is recommended to continue refining its formulation. Conduct additional research to identify the key components or additives that enhance its attractiveness and consumption by termites. This optimization process can help maximize the effectiveness of the bait as a termite control strategy. Adding more popular wood saw dust in the bait may achieve more significant and desired results and can also prove to be cost efficient rather than adding more cellulosic material.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to quantify and qualify the commercials in the Super Bowl. Design/methodology/approach This study is a content analysis of the placement of popular music in Super Bowl advertisements over a ten-year period (2005-2014). Findings More than a quarter of the commercials analyzed contained popular music. Although the use of popular music in commercials vacillated from year to year, popular music was most often observed in the product category of beverages; the music treatment most often used was original vocals; and song lyrics were most often relevant to the narrative of the commercial, rather than the brand. Originality/value This study extends the growing body of Super Bowl advertising research to popular music in commercials and provides a benchmark for all future research in this area.

Résumé :
CAM therapies have become increasingly popular in pediatric populations. Yet, little is known about children's preferences for CAM. This study examined treatment preferences in chronic pediatric pain patients offered a choice of CAM therapies for their pain. Participants were 129 children (94 girls) (mean age = 14.5 years ± 2.4; range = 8–18 years) presenting at a multidisciplinary, tertiary clinic specializing in pediatric chronic pain. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were used to examine the relationships between CAM treatment preferences and patient's sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, as well as their self-reported level of functioning. Over 60% of patients elected to try at least one CAM approach for pain. The most popular CAM therapies were biofeedback, yoga and hypnosis; the least popular were art therapy and energy healing, with craniosacral, acupuncture and massage being intermediate. Patients with a diagnosis of fibromyalgia (80%) were the most likely to try CAM versus those with other pain diagnoses. In multivariate analyses, pain duration emerged as a significant predictor of CAM preferences. For mind-based approaches (i.e. hypnosis, biofeedback and art therapy), pain duration and limitations in family activities were both significant predictors. When given a choice of CAM therapies, this sample of children with chronic pain, irrespective of pain diagnosis, preferred non-invasive approaches that enhanced relaxation and increased somatic control. Longer duration of pain and greater impairment in functioning, particularly during family activities increased the likelihood that such patients agreed to engage in CAM treatments, especially those that were categorized as mind-based modalities.

Résumé :
Exceedingly popular in their day, Russian vaudevilles and opera-vaudevilles of the first third of the nineteenth century are not available in modern orchestral scores. Although many of these musical comedies are known to be adapted from French works, for the most part the original French titles are unknown, as are the differences in French and Russian treatments of musical numbers. Focussing primarily on Pisarev's Babushkiny popugai [Grandma's Parrots] (St. Petersburg, 1819), this article compares the original French vaudeville with its Russian adaptation on several points: libretto, performance venues, and musical treatment, the latter based in part on manuscript sources of Alexei N. Verstovsky's orchestral scores.

Résumé :
The use of plants for medicinal purposes for the treatment of diseases is an approach used for many years in a popular way, through teas and other preparations. Based on the promising results that these plants can provide, today there are already several studies and studies that prove the efficacy in the treatments of various diseases through phytotherapy. This study aims to evaluate the use of phytotherapy as an adjunct treatment for asthma symptoms and to point out the problems arising from the lack of information on herbal treatment in general. The data were obtained through a field research conducted at the unifeso pneumopediatric outpatient clinic with the guardians of children with asthma. After a critical literature review, it was evaluated whether the species used have scientific evidence for the expected pharmacotherapeutic activities or whether they are used only based on reports based on popular knowledge. Through this research it was observed that in fact the most used species can promote the relief of asthma symptoms.

Résumé :
Six bread wheat genotypes were evaluated in three separate irrigation regime experiments to compare the response of agronomic performance and to identify genotypes with high yield potential under drought stress. The first irrigation treatment (I3) was given normal water irrigation (about 7000 m3 ha-1, according to recommendation for Qassim Region). The second (I2) and third (I1) treatments were given 2/3 and 1/3 of water amount of the first treatment, respectively. Factorial experiments in randomized complete block design with three replications were conducted during 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 seasons in the arid environment of central region of Saudi Arabia. Measurements were taken on days to heading, plant height, number of spikes m-2, number of kernels spike-1, 1000-kernel weight and grain yield. The drought susceptibility index (DSI) and water utilization efficiency (WUE) were calculated. The results revealed that effect of irrigation regime was highly significant for all traits, except days to heading. All studied characters were significantly decreased by reducing the amount of irrigation water. Grain yield showed maximum sensitivity as affected by moisture-stress. Means over environments indicated the existence of sufficient genetic variability among the genotypes for all the characters studied. Giza 171 recorded the highest values for most yield characters, while genotype 'Sama' was the lowest for the most yield characters. Giza 171, Sakha 93 and IC-1 recorded highest grain yield and WUE, based on average over irrigation treatments. Giza 171, Sakha 93 and IC-2 can be considered as drought stress tolerant genotypes.

Résumé :
Introduction Cardiovascular diseases are the most numerous group of diseases prevalent in the world. They are a challenge for many health systems, in terms of keeping life comfortable and also economics. The cause of selected disease entities is too much cholesterol in the blood. The most popular treatment for hypercholesterolemia is based on statins. Many patients are affected by intolerance to these drugs, so an important issue is the discovery and improvement of alternatives to statins. Purpose of work The purpose of this review is to collect literature data on the latest treatments for hypercholesterolemia with drugs other than statins and ezetimibe. Materials and methods Materials are from a review of recent literature available in PubMed. To search for articles, we used keywords such as: bempedoic acid, non-statin therapy, cardiovascular risk, inclisiran, alirocumab, cardiovascular disease, dyslipidemia, evolocumab. Summary Treatment of hypercholesterolemia with statins remains the most popular management strategy. Intolerance to treatment with these drugs creates serious clinical problems for patients. Recently, we could see the emergence of new drugs as alternatives to statins. As the results show, the new drugs can effectively replace statins in the hypolipemic treatment especially of patients who cannot be treated with them.

Résumé :
Distal radius fractures account for nearly 1 of every 5 fractures in individuals aged 65 or older. Moreover, increased susceptibility to vertebral and hip fractures has been documented in patients a year after suffering a distal radius fracture. Although women are more susceptible to hip fractures, men experience a higher mortality rate in the 7 years following a distal radius fracture. Traditional approaches to distal radius fractures have included both surgical and nonsurgical treatments, with predominant complaints involving weakness, stiffness, and pain. Nonsurgical approaches include immobilization with or without reduction, whereas surgical treatments include dorsal spanning bridge plates, percutaneous pinning, external fixation, and volar plate fixation. The nature of the fracture will determine the best treatment option, and surgeons employ a multifactorial treatment approach that includes the patient’s age, nature of injury, joint involvement, and displacement among other factors. Historically, closed reduction and percutaneous pinning have been the most popular approaches. However, volar plate fixation is quickly becoming a popular option as it minimizes tendon irritation, reduces immobilization time, and decreases risk of complication. The goal of treatment is to restore mobility, reduce pain, and improve functional outcomes following rehabilitation. The aim of this review is to summarize the most common treatments and importance of early referral to hand therapy to improve functional outcomes.
