An appeal to the novel “Poor Lisa” by Nikolay Karamzin in an extensive cultural and historical context provides an opportunity to pose a question on the transmission of culture, its “vertical” dimension. This makes it possible to distinguish between the characters according to their cultural types: Liza is a person of “soil”, endowed with ancestors’ sacred knowledge, while Erast is a man of «culture» out of touch with the ground. In this regard, it proves to be relevant not so much the social inequality of the characters, as noted by the researchers, as their different worldview, attitude to nature, love, etc. Parallel with the Russian folklore tradition, lyrics, where the concept of «love» is represented through the lexemes «sweetheart», «soul», «heart» are also challenging in this respect. It is to this archaic knowledge, the heritage of centuries, that Liza, the main character, is attached. Separation from love, a broken heart in this context is equivalent to the loss of life. Based on such representations, Liza’s act is considered from a different angle: death is the only possible outcome for the heroine, for her heart life. In the typological aspect, it is fruitful to refer to Montaigne’s Essays, to his statements on heart life, which is to a great extent consistent with the life of nature. At that time, Montaigne’s philosophy was well known to Russian literary figures.The methodological basis of the study includes structural-typological, comparative, and system-complex (culturological) research methods, ensuring a comprehensive approach to the analysis of the artistic text and making it possible to show the national space in Karamzin’s novel. The results may be interesting to both philologists and cultural scientists, and can also be used in courses on the history of Russian literature.

Ever since its publication the success of Fedor Dostoevskii's first novel Poor Folk has been ascribed primarily to the characterization of its “naturalistic” hero, Makar Devushkin, not to its sentimental heroine, Varen'ka Dobroselova. Although critics have continued to discover new merits in Poor Folk, in the end it is Devushkin who dominates the novel and on whom, in one way or another, most of its virtues depend. Not only is Devushkin the protagonist, he is also at the center of the novel's important innovations in style, theme, and characterization. Dostoevskii took the poor copying clerk, a type that for a decade had been used as a stock device—and most often the butt—of Russian comic fiction, and transformed him into the hero of a tragi-comic sentimental novel. This transformation was much abetted by Dostoevskii's use of the epistolary form— a form common to the sentimental novel of the eighteenth century, but long outdated in Russia by the 1840s—for it permitted the hero to tell his own story and, by so doing, to reveal the sensitive human being behind the comic mask.

Although subtitled “A Domestic Story,” Wilkie Collins's Poor Miss Finch (1872) offers a sensational plot bursting with secrets and mistaken identities. Many of the novel's plot twists and turns center on the transformation of the hero, Oscar Dubourg, from a wealthy white Englishman into a dark blue “Other” when he is treated with nitrate of silver after a serious head injury. While Oscar's medication cures him of his seizures, it also causes agryria, a skin discoloration, which turns him permanently dark blue. The hero's experience of this traumatic side effect is exacerbated by the reaction of his blind fiancée Lucilla, the title's “Poor Miss Finch.” In the novel, Lucilla's blindness leads her to distort visual concepts such as light and color in her imagination, resulting in her desperate fear of dark colors. The novel's central conflict arises when Oscar engages the help of Lucilla's companion Madame Pratolungo in hiding his new dark skin color from the blind heroine. Complicating this situation further is the arrival of Oscar's identical (but still white) twin Nugent, who deviously schemes to elope with the beautiful Lucilla by impersonating his brother.

Abstract The undesirable reception of Disney’s Mulan (2020) is attributable to complicated factors. This paper combs Hua Mulan’s images in Chinese literary and visual discourses, and confirms her as a virtuous epitome and a national heroine in Chinese mainstream culture, whereas in Mulan, she is portrayed as a warrior with magic “qi” and homosexual orientation, representing modern feminists’ pursuits for gender recognition and equality. Besides, the assertive collage of Chinese cultural elements severely impairs the authenticity of her story. Superficially, the arbitrary appropriation of Chinese culture causes the poor reception of the movie, which, however, if situated within the framework of Orientalism with a lineal examination of the Chinese-culture-related Hollywood movies, more underlying causes, ideological, political and commercial, can be uncovered. The film’s failure bespeaks the predicament confronted by contemporary Hollywood film industry. If Hollywood film producers want to reap lucrative gains from the booming Chinese film market, they should rectify their outdated condescending attitudes and do more in updating their production concepts, innovation, empathy and cooperation. This paper may be of significance as a reference to the practice and study of film adaptation, production and marketing across cultures.

This article emerges from a 2004–5 research project on audience memories of the 1957 British film Woman in a Dressing Gown. It provides general information on the project's objectives and methods before going on to detail one of its major findings: an unexpected degree of consensus among its participants when identifying the film's most memorable scene. The film's heroine makes an effort to improve her appearance by getting her hair done, before her transformation is suddenly and cruelly undone by bad weather; this scene stood out in participants' recollections to a greater extent than any other moment from the film. This article aims to account for the recurrent selection of that specific scene by offering a close reading of respondents' memories of it, with particular reference to the scene's central motif of a thwarted makeover.

Abstract Although critics have repeatedly referenced the stagey or cinematic elements that characterize Passing’s (1929) narrative structure and occasionally observed its gothic aesthetics, thus far no critic has attempted to contextualize Nella Larsen’s novel within the American stage and film culture of the early twentieth century or the concurrent revitalization of America’s interest in the Gothic in film and theater. Situated primarily in New York and helmed by many of the same individuals, the Harlem and Gothic Renaissances of the interwar years cooperated to reframe racial and aesthetic discourses, as Harlem art absorbed and reimagined gothic art, culture, and slang and imbued Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897) and its successors with covert racial commentary. This essay studies Nella Larsen’s Passing within this context, paying special attention to the influence of American racial discourse on Horace Liveright’s 1927 stage version of Dracula and its mutually influential relationship with black theater, art, and discourse. Melding contemporary archetypes of the Jazz Age vamp and gothic vampire to construct its liminal heroine, Clare Kendry, as a gothic figure in the vamp/vampire paradigm, Passing repurposes gothic elements to challenge racial binaries and to destabilize the racist status quo. This study suggests the significant extent to which Harlem Renaissance authors not only adapted the Gothic within their own literature but also reinvented and redefined it in the popular discourses of the twentieth century.

Abstract During the influenza epidemic of 1918-1919 in Winnipeg, several hundred predominantly Anglo-Canadian middle- and upper-class women volunteered to nurse and feed victims of the disease, particularly the poor of the city's north end. The contact between victim and volunteer, north and south, promoted a sense of social order, but was simultaneously unsettling for the women involved and for the broader community. The paper utilizes Mary Louise Pratt's notion of “contact zone” to suggest that the extraordinary qualities of social interaction during the epidemic, when lives normally lived apart intersected, were a source of social tension. This tension was partially resolved through limitations upon who fit the role of volunteer, principles of scientific management and professionalism, and the construction of an ideal feminine heroine. Individual women's volunteerism nevertheless reflected a more ambiguous experience.

Abstract The rarely discussed epigraph to Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles – ‘Poor wounded name! My bosom as a bed | Shall lodge thee’ – at first seems an odd choice. Tess is usually read as a tragedy; the epigraph’s source, Shakespeare’s The Two Gentlemen of Verona, is a comedy. The speaker of these lines in the play is a woman, the ‘wounded name’ a man’s, and the immediate context one of erotic playfulness as Julia tears up Proteus’s love letter and then tenderly gathers up the fragments. Yet the apparent mismatch works, because it gestures towards both the generic instability of Two Gentlemen, and the novel’s own unstable genre. Hardy recurrently raises the question of how Tess Durbeyfield’s story should be read. Tess’s ‘fall’ is at different times and for different people a fatal blot on her prospects, a venial error, and material for an amusing or satirical story. Novel and heroine hover between genres; generic interpretations are complicated by gender and class. Early reviewers who refused to read Tess as a tragedy may seem wrong-headed and puritanical in hindsight, but they were in some ways more alive to the novel’s generic slippages than many later readers. Hardy at once invokes and unsettles generic models, in his choice of epigraph and throughout the book.

The article explores the organization of space in two stories by William Faulkner, A Rose for Emily and Barn Burning. The analysis of spatial arrangements in both texts relies on the insights into the nature of literary space provided by Jurij Lotman, Janusz Sławiński, and Garbiel Zoran. In particular, Lotman’s notion of spatial relations as a topos modeling other, non-spatial ideas, Sławiński’s concept of „added–on senses” conveyed by the fi ctional space, and Zoran’s two methods of reconstructing space in a narrative, chronotopic and topographic, have proved especially useful and effective. In A Rose for Emily spatial relations model social relations, the contrast between the traditional South and the new South, as well as personal relations, showing the position of the heroine, Emily Grierson, in the community of Jefferson. In addition, Emily’s house serves as a means of illustrating the protagonist. In Barn Burning space appears largely as a challenge for the young protagonist, Sarty, and triggers his personal and moral growth. Two localities are the most important in this respect, the store in which the trial is taking place, and the magnifi cent residence of major de Spain. Furthermore, spatial relations in the story model the contrast between the poor and the rich in the American South.

The charming world of fairy tales used to be, for many ages, the favorite world for readers of fiction. Until the moment, these magical tales, their adventurous journeys, and happy endings provide a vital source of enchanting entertainment. Throughout her literary career, Angela Carter (1940-1992), a contemporary British novelist and a short story writer, shows interest in the employment of fairy tales in her works, producing what is called modern fairy tales. Her rewriting of these tales rendered her a remarkable woman advocate who calls for women’s legitimate rights and an appreciation and a recognition of their active position in societies, things that men enjoy and always receive. This paper tackles The Magic Toyshop (1967), Carter’s second novel. It discusses the fate of its young heroine, Melanie, and her siblings, Jonathan and Victoria, who have become orphans by the death of their parents in a plane crash while in America. Melanie journeys from her middle-class luxurious house to Uncle Phillip’s poor house located in South London. Like Cinderella, the orphan girl dreams of being a bride and marrying a handsome man while suffering under the oppression of a stepfather, Uncle Phillip. Unlike her, Melanie will be shocked to meet a different version of Prince Charming of her imagination.

Em Eracle (fim do século XII), romance octossilábico tripartite (6570 versos), Gautier adaptou a trajetória biográfica do soberano bizantino, do nascimento à morte. Especialmente na terceira parte da obra, o autor baseou-se na Reversio Sanctae Crucis, texto litúrgico que popularizou o mito heracliano no imaginário cristão ocidental. Na Reversio, cuja autoria era atribuída ao carolíngio Rábano Mauro, celebram-se o triunfo de Heráclio contra os persas e a recuperação da relíquia da Santa Cruz e de Jerusalém. Inicialmente analisamos o nascimento do mito em três autores da Alta Idade Média ocidental: dois da “tradição histórica” (Fredegário e o Cronista Moçárabe) e um da “tradição lendária” (Pseudo-Rábano). Depois, entramos no cerne da tese, com o exame da recepção e “literarização” da figura mítica de Heráclio por Gautier. Influenciado por uma linguagem simbólica, o clérigo introduziu as etapas da infância/juventude do herói (1ª parte do romance) e adaptou a narrativa da Reversio (3ª parte do romance). Com seu talento literário e liberdade imaginativa, Gautier potencializou determinadas características do basileus e originalmente inseriu outras, o que resultou num personagem singular. Da mesma forma, a “atualização” do conteúdo da Reversio tornou o governante bizantino um homem mais familiar ao público do século XII<br>This thesis analyzes the reception of the myth of the basileus Heraclius (ca. 575-641) by the French cleric Gautier d’Arras. In Eracle (late 12th century), tripartite octosyllabic romance (6570 verses), Gautier adapted the biographical trajectory of the Byzantine ruler, from his birth to his death. Especially in the third part of the work, the author was based in the Reversio Sanctae Crucis, liturgical text that popularized the Heraclian myth in the Western Christian imaginary. In Reversio, whose authorship was attributed to the Carolingian Rabanus Maurus, are celebrated the triumph of Heraclius against the Persians and the recovery of the relic of the Holy Cross and of Jerusalem. Initially we analyze the origin of the myth in three authors of the Western Early Middle Ages: two from “historical tradition” (Fredegar and Mozarabic Chronicler) and one from “legendary tradition” (Pseudo-Rabanus). Then, we enter into the core of the thesis, with the exam of the reception and “literarization” of the mythical figure of Heraclius by Gautier d’Arras. Influenced by a symbolic language, the cleric introduced the stages of the hero’s childhood/youth (1st part of the romance) and adapted the narrative of the Reversio (3rd part of the romance). With his literary talent and imaginative freedom, Gautier potentiated certain characteristics of the basileus and originally introduced others, which resulted in a singular character. In the same way, the “update” of Reversio content became the Byzantine ruler a more familiar man to the public of the 12th century

Previous issue date: 2013<br>Os Pelecaniformes são aves associadas aos ambientes aquáticos, estando em contato constante
com contaminantes de origem antrópica. Neste contexto, o presente estudo quantificou
concentrações de chumbo (Pb) e cádmio (Cd), metais não essenciais e tóxicos, relacionando-as
com as características de dois habitats, técnicas de forrageamento e níveis tróficos da garçabranca-grande
(Ardea alba) e do colhereiro (Platalea ajaja), no sul do Brasil. Amostras de
sangue, penas e ovos (separados em casca e conteúdo) foram coletadas para as duas espécies em
dois ninhais, um de ambiente exclusivamente límnico e outro predominantemente estuarino. A
concentração de Pb no sangue foi diferente entre os locais de amostragem, sendo maior nas
amostras coletadas no ambiente estuarino. Já a concentração na casca do ovo foi maior nas
amostras do ambiente límnico. Quanto ao Cd, a concentração sanguínea foi maior na garça do
que no colhereiro. Na pena e na casca do ovo, as concentrações foram maiores nas amostras
coletadas no ambiente límnico. Os resultados mostraram uma correlação positiva entre as
concentrações de Pb e Cd na casca e no conteúdo dos ovos, além de um alto índice de correlação
entre as concentrações dos metais na casca do ovo. Embora as concentrações destes metais no
sangue e penas das espécies estudadas sejam inferiores àquelas relatadas na literatura, as
concentrações dos metais nos ovos foram até 605 vezes maiores que aquelas relatadas para
espécies semelhantes amostras em outros ambientes aquáticos. Os ovos mostraram-se como
bioindicadores mais sensíveis que os demais tecidos analisados, permitindo a constatação de
contaminação por Pb e Cd nos ambientes úmidos na região sul do Brasil. Desta forma, foi
verificado que as aves aquáticas analisadas no presente estudo podem ser consideradas como
indicadoras/sentinelas quanto à contaminação ambiental por Pb e Cd.<br>Pelecaniformes are birds associated with wetlands, in close contact with contaminants of
anthropogenic origin. The current study quantified lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) concentrations,
both non-essential and toxic metals, in tissues of great egrets (Ardea alba) and roseate spoonbills
(Platalea ajaja), comparing with foraging techniques, trophic levels and estuarine vs. limnetic
habitats. Blood, feathers, egg content and eggshells were sampled in two colonies, the first one
limnetic and the second one estuarine. Pb concentration in blood differed between places, higher
in the estuarine colony, while concentrations in eggshell were higher in the limnetic colony. Cd
concentrations in blood were higher in egrets than spoonbills. In feathers and eggshells, Cd
concentrations were higher in samples from the limnetic site. Positive correlations between
concentration of each metal in eggshell and egg content were found, as well as a high correlation
among both metals in eggshell. Despite concentrations of both metals found in blood and
feathers were below those reported in other studies, concentrations in eggs were up to 605 times
higher than in other similar species studied elsewhere. In general, eggs seem to be more sensitive
bioindicators of contamination by metals in comparison with other tissues analyzed, indicating
Pb and Cd contamination in wetlands in southern Brazil. Therefore, waterbirds investigated in
the current study could be regarded as suitable indicators/sentinels of environmental
contamination by Pb and Cd.

Enseigner l'histoire militaire à l'école de l'air d'Athènes nous a donné la possibilité d'avoir accès aux archives de l'aviation, dans lesquelles nous avons souvent puisé afin d'en extraire des données historiques. Les documents primaires, donc authentiques, ont à la fois donné une image assez complète et plutôt captivante de l'action héroïque des aviateurs pendant les deux Guerres Mondiales. Des valeurs nationales, sources d'inspiration patriotique telles que l'héroïsme, le courage, le sacrifice de soi, l'abnégation, la solidarité, l'esprit scrupuleux et la fierté nationale, associées à des qualités d'efficacité, armes de la puissance patriotique, comme la compétence, le sang-froid et l'ingéniosité, pourraient-elles fournir, dans un cadre historique, militaire et dramatique marqué par la guerre, des témoignages directs de patriotisme? Fondée sur une méthode " sémantique ", nous avons recherché dans les sources primaires des éléments significatifs, considérés indispensables à la représentation de ce qui motivait vraiment ces officiers. Dans tous les cas, le résultat est que les valeurs nationales et les qualités d'efficacité, dont disposaient les aviateurs grecs durant les deux guerres, indépendamment de l'organisation de l'évolution de la nouvelle arme et des conditions, ont fourni des exemples directs de patriotisme. Après une recherche approfondie dans les archives de l'armée de l'air grecque, nous avons constaté l'existence d'un grand nombre de documents historiques sur la Catastrophe d'Asie Mineure, que nous pourrions étudier et analyser dans une future recherche.

Dissertação para obtenção do grau de Mestre no Instituto Superior de Ciências da Saúde Egas Moniz<br>As patologias Neurodegenerativas são doenças incuráveis e debilitantes, apresentando um caráter crónico com uma destruição celular progressiva e frequentemente irreversível. Os sintomas deste tipo de doenças caraterizam-se por alterações significativas nas capacidades cognitivas, motoras, fisiológicas e consequentemente sociais, afetando desta forma não só o doente, como todos os que com ele se relacionam. Estas alterações têm uma profunda influência na qualidade de vida quer do doente quer do meio que o envolve. As patologias neurodegenerativas com mais expressão são a doença de Alzheimer, Parkinson, e Hungtinton. Este grupo de doenças neurodegenerativas tem sido alvo de intensa investigação por serem preponderantes e pelo aumento do número de casos nos últimos anos. Muitos podem ser os fatores desencadeantes destas patologias, tais como agentes ambientais, propensão genética, e ainda mecanismos epigenéticos. Diversos estudos sugerem que a exposição a determinados químicos constitui um fator capaz de induzir este tipo de patologias. Entre estes encontram-se o consumo de substâncias psicoativas. A utilização, pelo homem destas substâncias é ancestral. Recentemente o número de diferentes substâncias de abuso tem vindo a aumentar, nomeadamente pelo aparecimento de substâncias de abuso
sintéticas, traficadas nas ruas, desde o início deste século. De uma forma geral todas as substâncias psicoativas ilícitas são profundamente nocivas por serem tóxicas e gerarem dependência. As substâncias de abuso mais consumidas, presentemente nas sociedades ditas desenvolvidas, são a cannabis, a cocaína, as anfetaminas e a heroína. A heroína é uma droga semi-sintética, derivada da morfina, extraída da espécie Paper somniferum, comumente designada por papoila do ópio. O consumo de heroína tem sido relacionado
com o desenvolvimento de patologias neurodegenerativas. São vários os números de casos reportados na literatura sugerindo que o consumo de heroína é indutor de síndromes Parkinsónicas, a doença de Alzheimer e de Leucoencefalopatia Espongiforme. Os mecanismos de toxicidade sugeridos incluem a formação de vacúolos na oligodendria, alterações mitocondriais e estados de hipóxia severos. Contudo, os mecanismos moleculares destes processos são ainda desconhecidos.

Dissertação de mestrado Integrado em Psicologia<br>Os estudos na área da memória autobiográfica têm mostrado que o seu papel no
funcionamento humano é extenso e de tal modo importante que auxilia na compreensão e
definição do self dos indivíduos orientando-os no seu mundo íntimo e pessoal. Défices ou
alterações nas suas funções, como a sobregeneralização da recuperação mnésica, foram
observadas em muitos quadros patológicos. Investigações prévias sugerem que a
sobregeneralização também está presente nos dependentes de heroína, mesmo abstinentes. O
objetivo principal deste estudo foi explorar a tendência dos heroinómanos evocarem
memórias autobiográficas sobregeneralizadas utilizando para esse fim uma metodologia
diferente. No presente trabalho recorreu-se a músicas como estímulos elicitadores porque,
enquanto estímulo, poderão permitir maior vividez e especificidade das memórias evocadas
do que as conseguidas com outro tipo de estímulos. Durante o procedimento, os participantes
ouviram excertos de músicas como pistas para a recuperação de memórias autobiográficas. Os
resultados indicam que não há diferenças quanto à quantidade e especificidade das memórias
elicitadas entre o grupo-alvo de homens heroinómanos abstinentes e um grupo de controlo,
não se verificando a sobregeneralização no primeiro grupo.<br>Research on autobiographical memory has shown that its role on human
functioning is vast and that it is vital to understand and define an individual’s self, guiding
them in their personal and intimate worlds. Changes and deficits in its function, such as the
overgeneralization of mnesic retrieval, were observed in several pathological situations.
Previous research suggest that this overgeneralization is also present in heroin addicts, even if
currently abstinent. The main aim of this study is to explore the tendency of heroin addicts to
retrieve overgeneralized autobiographical memories by employing an unusual methodology.
In this study, we have employed songs as triggering stimuli because, as stimuli, they may
allow for a greater specificity and richness of evoked memories compared with other types of
stimuli. During the experiment, participants listened to excerpts of songs as cues to retrieve
autobiographical memories. Results show no difference as to the quantity and specificity of
retrieved memories between the target-group of abstinent male heroin addicts and the control
group, also showing no evidence of an overgeneralization effect in the first group.

Os opiáceos são moléculas de origem natural ou sintética, cujos efeitos a nível da célula são transmitidos por recetores específicos, tanto a nível do sistema nervoso central, como do sistema nervoso periférico. As principais vias de administração de opiáceos incluem a via oral e intravenosa, embora os opióides possam também ser inalados ou fumados. A heroína é o opióide mais comumente vendido no mercado ilegal de drogas, sendo rapidamente metabolizada por desacetilação em monoacetilmorfina (6-MAM) e depois em morfina. Neste estudo realizou-se a validação de um método de confirmação de análise qualitativa do metabolito 6-MAM por cromatografia gasosa acoplada a espectrofotometria de massa, em urina humana. Para a validação da técnica recorreu-se a cinco parâmetros de validação, tendo-se obtido resultados aceitáveis. Concluiu-se que a técnica utilizada é altamente precisa e sensivel. O presente estudo irá permitir efectuar com rapidez e fiabilidade, as análises rotineiras dos colaboradores da Marinha.

AbstractHerman Melville’s “Benito Cereno” and Frederick Douglass’s “The Heroic Slave” both explore the ways in which power is inscribed into maritime technologies. A focus on the role of ships within these narratives reveals the way systems of power operate, and invites inquiry into the way those systems can be disrupted. The hapless qualities of Melville’s central figure, Amasa Delano, and the hypermasculine heroism of Douglass’s protagonist, Madison Washington, have received much scholarly attention. These aspects of the characters come into sharper relief when we consider the ship itself to be a legible, authoritative text. Delano’s notoriously poor reading of his situation stands in contrast to his accurate and detailed reading of the ship in its disarray. Relatedly, Washington’s nautical literacy parallels Douglass’s own well-known history with the printed word. The two stories present opposing looks at the nature of power as inscribed in the ship. For Douglass, power is there for the taking, systems can be overturned, and their technologies subverted. Melville’s text offers a dimmer view; his story and its concluding legal documentation suggests that systems of power are supported by a self-sustaining and self-justifying logic. These two visions imply different prospects for Black agency.

Abstract Frances Twinn, a graduate student working on the fiction of Elizabeth Gaskell, points to a troubling inconsistency at the heart of Ruth. The narrative opens with a depiction of the poor-but-genteel heroine apprenticed to a harsh milliner, Mrs Mason, in ‘an assize town in one of the eastern counties’. It is ‘many years ago’ (p. 3). We should picture, it seems, a sleepy county town like Ipswich or Norwich in the 1830s. The heroine, Ruth Hilton, is an orphan. Her mother had been the daughter of a Norfolk curate –– a ‘delicate, fine lady’ (p. 36); her father had been a farmer –– a good-hearted but tragically unlucky man. The delicate Mrs Hilton died early of physical exhaustion, unable to cope with the physical demands of being a farmer’s wife. He followed soon after of a broken heart and bankruptcy. Ruth, alone in the world, falls into the unfeeling custody of a ‘hard-headed’ guardian, who disposes of the waif to Mrs Mason so as to be rid of her, at the small expense of her indenture fee.

My allergy to this saintly, statuesque heroine, whom everyone else seems to adore, should disqualify me as a lover of Middlemarch, but I hope it won” t: when I first read the novel as a junior in college, its greatness made me shiver, but I shivered at, and with, poor Casaubon, struggling with an intractable book and a hectoring wife, and I do still. After all, Casaubon alone among the novel”s characters is doing something he doesn” t have to do. He has money, land, and a respectable position. Working on the shapeless Key to All Mythologies is a labor of sheer love. He flays himself on with the grotesque obsession that is another face of faith, while Dorothea glorifies herself by flailing about crying “What can I do?” I admit to a quirky bias against this floridly self-mortifying girl. She begins the novel by highhandedly rejecting two things I cherish: her dead mother”s jewels and Sir James Chettam”s offering of “a tiny Maltese puppy” (ch. 3, 28).

En el epígrafe extraído de la novela El Sexto, la vida se entiende como una potencia capaz de actuar sobre la muerte, pero donde el castigo por dicha acción es la misma muerte. Tenemos ante nuestros ojos el fundamento de la acción heroica-trágica: el desarrollo de la potencia de vida sin temer los límites de la muerte física. La luminosidad de la acción trágica nos rescata de las miserias terrenales y nos devuelve, así, nuestra dignidad humana: una dignidad más trascendental y menos mundana. Esta conceptualización de la vida como potencia heroica es el mensaje más vital que El Sexto de José María Arguedas otorga a su lector y que, sorprendentemente, la crítica ha pasado por alto. El estudio de la función política del heroísmo es el principal objetivo del presente artículo. El acto heroico en la obra surge como respuesta a las condiciones infrahumanas en la que viven los prisioneros del Sexto. Para entender la dimensión política del heroísmo es necesario, primero, analizar el espacio contra el cual se enfrenta: la cárcel como una máquina productora de locura y muerte. En segundo lugar, hace falta analizar la relación de empatía que se establece entre el protagonista y la locura, como una búsqueda afectiva que abre una nueva mirada sobre la realidad nacional.

Abstract Chapter 10 takes readers on a journey with Malik, a person of color living on an estate where his parents are the estate owner’s chauffeur and chef. Due to the generosity of the estate owner, Malik attends a private prep school, where he is one of two Black students and relatively poor compared to the White students. Malik’s acceptance to a 6-year medical program at Howard University was the start of his dream of becoming a physician. After failing an organic chemistry class, his dream came to an end. This caused Malik to start abusing Oxys (oxycodone), which led to heroin abuse, multiple stays in rehabs, and multiple recovery failures. Eventually, Malik initiated psychotherapy with a therapist who had a neuroscience-informed orientation for treating psychoactive substance abuse. The conclusion of this chapter details Malik’s struggle to achieve recovery, experiencing many slips, until he finally extinguishes the three-stage neurocircuitry of psychoactive substance abuse. His struggle ends when he achieves a state of recovered and reenters Howard’s 6-year medical program.

The epilogue discusses the contining role of secondhand commerce and style in the twenty-first century United States. Throughout the twentieth century, used goods economies codified and expanded, branching out into million-dollar industries. Vintage exhibitionism and elective poverty merged even more decisively at the end of the millennium. After habitual heroin user Kurt Cobain took his own life with a shotgun in 1994, styles straight-facedly called shabby chic, heroin chic, or poor chic enjoyed greater cultural currency than ever before. Voluntary secondhand dress persists precisely because it suggests both cultural and economic distinction, and shoppers continued to view secondhand venues as exceptions to the social and economic critiques of dominant capitalisms. Secondhand styles satisfy a desire to be seen as different than the average consumer dupe, as willing to invest time in the cultivation of originality without utilizing class and wealth privilege. The success of the 2013 song, “Thrift Shop,” by independent rappers Macklemore and Lewis—born and raised in the hometown of grunge, Seattle— attests to the continuing relevance of secondhand to popular culture.

INTRODUCCIÓN El uso de cocaína puede generar alteraciones psicomotrices (1). Sin embargo, hay pocos estudios sobre el uso conjunto de cocaína-heroína (speedball) y las alteraciones psicomotrices inducidas de forma aguda en una sala de reducción de daños (2,3). OBJETIVOS Analizar las diferencias psicopatológicas psicomotrices entre el uso agudo de cocaína y de cocaína-heroína en una sala de venopunción. MÉTODOS Este es un estudio observacional realizado en una sala de venopunción entre el 01/01/2009 y 31/05/2021. Se analizaron las diferencias sociodemográficas básicas y variables psicomotrices en función del uso agudo de cocaína o cocaína-heroína intravenosa. Análisis univariantes y bivariantes fueron realizados por cada consumo y no por información individual. RESULTADOS De 3707 episodios de venopunción asistida en la sala, 1079 correspondían a uso de cocaína y 77 a cocaína –heroína (el resto eran usos de heroína). Hay diferencias sociodemográficas y psicopatológicas de carácter motriz entre el uso de cocaína y cocaína-heroína (Tabla 1). INTRODUCCIÓN La asociación entre el consumo de drogas de abuso y los trastornos motores han sido descritos y estudiados, sin embargo, hay pocos estudios en sala de reducción de daño (1,2). Dado esto, es necesario investigar las relaciones entre las alteraciones psicomotrices y los correlatos clínicos asociados. OBJETIVOS Determinar y estuduiar si existe asociación entre la aparición trastornos motores tras los consumos de cocaïna y heroïna y sus correlatos clínicos. METODOLÓGIA Este es un estudio observacional realizado en una sala de venopunción entre el 01/01/2009 yel 31/01/2022 donde se analizan variables sociodemográficas y clínicas, relacionándolas con las alteraciones psicomtorices observadas inmediatamente despues de el uso de la sala de venopunción. RESULTADOS En el periodo analizado hubo 3765 venopunciones (92.5% realizados por hombres; edad media de 43.2±6.1 años). Observamos que antes de las 6 horas, el 26.4% de los pacientes presentan síntomas motores, siendo el temblor (12.8%) y el bruxismo (11.6%) los más frecuentes (p< 0.000). Se observa como la aparición de síntomas motores es más frecuente tras el consumo de cocaïna ( 67.4% p<0.000 ) que tras la administración de heroïna (3’6% p< 0’000). Los síntomas psicóticos se relaiconaron de forma positva y significativa con la presencia de alteraciones psicomotrices (ver Tabla 1). CONCLUSIONES La presencia de alteraciones psicomtorices en salas de venopunción es frecuente, presnetando unos correlatos con respecto variables sociodemográficas, al uso de ciertas sustancias, presencia de síntomas psicóticos. Estos datos deberían ser tenidos enm cuenta para protocolos en estas salas, siendo necesario además mayor investigación en esta área. REFERENCIAS 1. Leri F, Bruneau J, Stewart J. Material y métodos: Se estudia una muestra de pacientes con trastorno por uso de sustancias que realizan intentos de suicidio. Se divide la población según empleo de metodología violenta o no. Se considera metodología violenta: cortes, ahorcamiento, precipitación, defenestración, ahogamiento, armas de fuego, etc. Se considera metodología no violenta, por el contrario, la sobreingesta de fármacos sedantes y no sedantes. Se revisan las variables sociodemográficas, clínicas y evolutivas asociadas a la metodología distinguiendo también cada grupo según el tipo de consumo (alcohol, cocaína, heroína, cannabis, etc.). El estudio fue aprobado por el Comité de Ética e Investigación Clínica del Hospital Universitario Arnau de Vilanova. Resultados y conclusiones: Se trata de una muestra de 553 pacientes con conducta suicida y diagnóstico de trastorno por uso de sustancias. Respecto al consumo, observamos que, 85.5% consumía alcohol, el 26.2% THC, el 10.7% Cocaína, el 0.7% heroína y el 19.9% presentaban policonsumo de tóxicos. El alcohol lo consumían 47.1% mujeres, el THC 50.3% mujeres, la cocaína el 50.8% mujeres, la heroína 25% mujeres y el policonsumo 38.1% mujeres (p=0.002). La edad del primer intento también varió (OH, 39.2 años; THC, 30.7 ; cocaína, 36.9; heroína, 45.1; policonsumo, 34.4 años) p<0.001. A parte del diagnóstico por TUS (p<0.001), presentaban diagnóstico de trastorno de inicio en la infancia sobre todo los consumidores de cocaína (p=0.001) y trastorno del ánimo los consumidores de cocaína (33.8%), THC (31.7%), OH (29.1%) y policonsumo (12.7%), p=0.005. La metodología no violenta (sobreingesta de sedantes/no sedantes), la emplearon el 86% de los consumidores de OH, el 91% del THC, el 83.1% de los consumidores de cocaína, el 100% de los consumidores de heroína y el 77.3% de los policonsumidores.

Objetivos: Algunos autores, como el equipo de Blasco-Fontecilla, han hipotetizado sobre la reiteración de la conducta suicida como un posible comportamiento adictivo que se pudiera basar en mecanismos fisiológicos similares. Se pretende evaluar las características sociodemográficas, clínicas, evolutivas y relativas al consumo de los TUS que presentan reincidencia en los intentos. Material y métodos: pacientes TUS que realizan intentos de suicidio. Se divide la población según su reincidencia suicida. Se revisan las variables sociodemográficas, clínicas y evolutivas asociadas a la metodología distinguiendo también cada grupo según el tipo de consumo. El estudio fue aprobado por el CEIC. Resultados y conclusiones: 553 pacientes suicidas y diagnóstico TUS. Respecto al consumo, el 85.5% consumía alcohol, 26.2% THC, 10.7% Cocaína, 0.7% heroína y 19.9% policonsumo. A parte del diagnóstico por TUS (p<0.001), presentaban diagnóstico de trastorno de inicio en la infancia sobre todo los consumidores de cocaína (p=0.001) y trastorno del ánimo los consumidores de cocaína (33.8%), THC (31.7%), OH (29.1%) y policonsumo (12.7%), p=0.005. En cuanto a la reincidencia y los días de supervivencia desde el episodio diana aunque no fueran significativos (p=0.089 y p=0.617) sí orientativos. Consumidores de OH reinciden el 41.2% en una media de 786 días; consumidores de THC reinciden el 43.4% en 922 días, consumidores de cocaína reinciden el 49.2% en de 856 días, consumidores de heroína un 25% y los policonsumidores un 45% en 1017 días.

El uso de sustancias en pacientes con Esquizofrenia es una realidad cada vez más frecuente, llegando a un 80% de comorbilidad a lo largo de la vida. Cuando ambas patologías se dan en el mismo sujeto, las consecuencias de cara al pronóstico empeoran, especialmente por la repercusión del consumo de sustancias en una baja adherencia al tratamiento antipsicótico en este grupo de pacientes, lo que habitualmente predice recaídas psicóticas a medio plazo. El uso de fármacos agonistas opiodes, como la metadona, en el tratamiento de la dependencia a heroína es altamente frecuente, existiendo una amplia evidencia de su eficacia. Por otra parte, entre los síntomas de abstinencia aguda a opiodes se incluyen alteraciones afectivas como la disforia, y se han descrito serie de casos de psicosis tras la retirada de éstos. Se presenta el caso de un varón de 42 años, con diagnóstico de dependencia a heroína de varios años de evolución y Esquizofrenia Paranoide, que está en tratamiento sustitutivo con metadona y que, tras la retirada de este fármaco, presentó una reagudización de síntomas psicóticos que requirió ingreso hospitalario para estabilización clínica. Los pacientes duales con esquizofrenia se consideran especialmente graves, tanto desde la perspectiva psicopatológica como social. La aparición de síntomas psicóticos tras la desintoxicación de opioides en pacientes sin antecedentes conocidos ha sido descrita por varios autores, sugiriéndose que los opioides modulan la transmisión dopaminérgica en la fisiopatología de la psicosis. La desintoxicación de opioides y sus posibles complicaciones obliga a una adecuada vigilancia por parte de los profesionales. El periodo inmediatamente posterior a la desintoxicación de opioides puede considerarse como de alto riesgo de descompensación psicótica.

OBJETIVOS: Realizar una revisión bibliográfica sobre seguridad, eficacia y tasa de retención de tratamiento de la Morfina de Liberación Prolongada como alternativa terapéutica a la terapia de sustitución de opioides con Metadona a propósito de un caso atendido en la práctica clínica: un varón de 65 años con factores de riesgo cardiovascular, en tratamiento con Quetiapina por Trastorno Psicótico y Metadona desde hace 18 años, que presenta en ECG realizado en Urgencias un intervalo QT prolongado (QTc 560ms), por lo que se indica retirada de fármacos que prolonguen el intervalo QT. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Se realizó revisión estructurada en la base de datos PubMed con los términos: “Slow release oral morphine AND Treatment of opioid use disorder”, “Slow Release oral morphine AND Methadone”. Se seleccionaron artículos publicados desde 2015, incluyendo revisiones sistemáticas y meta-análisis. CONCLUSIONES: las revisiones sistemáticas y meta-análisis incluidos en la revisión evidencian que no existen diferencias significativas entre Metadona y Morfina de Liberación Prolongada en cuanto al uso de heroína y la tasa de retención de tratamiento. Según los resultados de estudios incluidos en la revisión, la Morfina de Liberación Prolongada consiguió una mayor reducción del craving por heroína que la Metadona. Dado que el tratamiento con Morfina de Liberación Prolongada ha demostrado ser no inferior al tratamiento con Metadona, debe ser considerado como alternativa terapéutica. Hay evidencia de que tanto Metadona como la Buprenorfina producen prolongación del intervalo QT, por lo que el tratamiento con Morfina de Liberación Prolongada cobra especial importancia en pacientes en los que aparece prolongación de intervalo QT, condición que puede evolucionar a una Torsade de Pointes, una arritmia asociada con elevada mortalidad.

INTRODUCCIÓN Los opioides tienen efectos analgésicas y sedantes y en medicina se usan para el tratamiento del dolor, su consumo de forma ''lúdica'' produce euforia y sensación de placer. La dependencia de los opioides es un problema de gran relevancia a nivel mundial, se estima que unos 32 millones de personas utilizan los opioides de forma ilícita, incluyendo los recetados. De estos, 9,2 millones consumen heroína, siendo esta la responsable de que 300000 personas sean tratadas por dependencia, unas 25000 hayan muerto y 100000 hayan contraído el VIH. Lo cual incrementa la atención sanitaria, la mortalidad juvenil y la delincuencia OBJETIVOS Actualizar los conocimientos de la dependencia a opioides Identificar líneas de tratamiento farmacológico más utilizadas en España para los mismos METODOLOGÍA Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica en PUBMED, MEDLINE, SCIELO y COCHARANE. Los desc utilizados fueron; Tratamiento sustitución dependencia opiáceos , dependencia a la heroína. Booleano: AND RESULTADOS Y CONCLUSIONES La dependencia de opiáceos es una enfermedad multicausal y crónica. . El perfil del paciente a tratamiento en la sustitución de opiáceos es varón 43,2 años de media, educación primaria, parado y que acude a tratamiento por iniciativa propia. Las principales líneas farmacológicas en España son el tratamiento con metadona, actualmente es el más utilizado. Y la buprenorfina presenta una efectividad similar, siendo más segura pues causa menos depresión respiratoria y menos alteración a nivel de SNC. Cabe destacar que el uso de ambas es vía oral, sin embargo, recientemente se ha aceptado el uso de buprenorfina subcutánea. Lo cual produce un aumento de la calidad de vida del paciente. Resulta interesante seguir investigando, ya que dar una buena atención reduce el gasto sanitario ya que disminuye la comorbilidad tanto psiquiátrica como física, facilita el cambio del estilo de vida y reduce la actividad criminal.

OBJETIVOS El objetivo principal fue evaluar el potencial adictivo de un Nuevo Opioide Sintético (NOS), el Isotonitaceno, en animales de laboratorio. Esta droga ha causado numerosas muertes en consumidores desconociéndose, además, los mecanismos de acción últimos por los que se producen sus efectos adictivos. Dado que este NOS es más potente que la heroína, opioide que suele consumirse por pacientes con Trastornos de Personalidad, consideramos de utilidad valorar las características adictivas de esta nueva droga sintética. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS Se utilizaron ratas Sprague-Dawley de ambos sexos en las que se evaluó la adquisición de la conducta de autoadministración intravenosa de Isotonitaceno (0’5 ug/kg) durante 19 días, comparada con la conducta de animales controles que se autoadministraron Vehículo (EtOH: Tween80: NaCl 0,9%, 1:1:8). A partir del día 20, se varió las dosis cada 3 días utilizando diferentes dosis de Isotonitaceno (0,125 ug/kg; 0,25 ug/kg; 0,34 ug/kg; 0,68 ug/kg; y 1,36 ug/kg) durante 12 días. RESULTADOS Y CONCLUSIONES A partir del noveno día se observaron diferencias muy claras entre ambos grupos, siendo estadísticamente significativa a partir del día 13. El análisis de la respuesta en función de la dosis muestra que el comportamiento de autoadministración es mayor a bajas concentraciones del Isotonitaceno, siendo la más consumida la de 0,125 ug/kg. Dada la validez ecológica del modelo animal de la autoadministración intravenosa de drogas, considerado como el mejor modelo animal que remeda la drogadicción en humanos, estos resultados sugieren que las propiedades adictivas del Isotonitaceno se adquieren y se mantienen con mayor facilidad a dosis bajas. Además, demuestran por primera vez en la literatura científica, que es posible conseguir que los animales se autoadministren este NOS, con lo que se abre el camino para futuras investigaciones neurobiológicas.
