Résumé :
This paper presents a simple, computationally efficient and highly accurate numerical model for the study of free vibration behaviour of polygonal plates with variable thickness. The approach developed is based on the Rayleigh-Ritz method and the use of non-orthogonal right triangular coordinates. The deflection of the plate is approximated by a set of beam characteristic orthogonal polynomials generated using the Gram-Schmidt procedure. The algorithm is quite general and can be used to study plates with any combinations of clamped, simply supported and free edge support conditions and also different taper and geometric parameters. Several examples are solved and some results are compared with existing values in the literature. New results are also presented for tapered polygonal plates with different geometrical shapes and combinations of boundary conditions. For some polygonal plates, their mode shapes of free vibration are shown. The study of this problem is of practical importance for a better understanding of the vibration of polygonal plates which are commonly encountered in modern technology.

Résumé :
In the present paper, the geometrically nonlinear behavior of piezoelastic thin plates is studied. First, the governing equations for the electromechanically coupled problem are derived based on the von Karman–Tsien kinematic assumption. Here, the Berger approximation is extended to the coupled piezoelastic problem. The general equations are then reduced to a single nonlinear partial differential equation for the special case of simply supported polygonal edges. The nonlinear equations are approximated by using a problem-oriented Ritz Ansatz in combination with a Galerkin procedure. Based on the resulting equations the buckling and post-buckling behavior of a polygonal simply supported plate is studied in a nondimensional form, where the special geometry of the polygonal plate enters via the eigenvalues of a Helmholtz problem with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Single term as well as multi-term solutions are discussed including the effects of piezoelectric actuation and transverse force loadings upon the solution. Novel results concerning the buckling, snap through and snap buckling behavior are presented.

This paper presents an exact relationship between the natural frequencies of Reddy third-order plate theory and those of classical Kirchhoff plate theory for simply supported, polygonal isotropic plates, including rectangular plates. The relationship for the natural frequencies enables one to obtain the solutions of the third-order plate theory from the known Kirchhoff plate theory for the same problem. As examples, some vibration frequencies for rectangular and regular polygonal plates are determined using this relationship. [S0739-3717(00)01601-9]

Résumé :
A general solution for the problems of rigid stamp indentation on a curvilinear hole boundary of an anisotropic elastic body is obtained by employing the Stroh formalism, the method of analytical continuation, and the technique of mapping a closed curve to a unit circle. With this general solution, two typical curvilinear holes are studied. One is an ellipse, the other is a polygon. Since the transformation functions used in our solutions are not always one to one, some of the solutions are not exact but only approximate. For example, the solutions to the problems of anisotropic plates containing an elliptic hole and isotropic plates containing a polygonal hole are exact, but the solutions to the problems of anisotropic plates containing a polygonal hole are only approximate. Because the solutions presented in this paper are new and no other analytical solution has been found in the literature, the correctness of the present results can only be checked analytically by their reduced forms such as those for isotropic media or those for the stress boundary value problems. To show the generality of our solutions and to see clearly the physical behavior of the indentation problems two numerical examples are given, and their related hoop stress and stress contour are also plotted.

Résumé :
To investigate the maintenance effect of diaphragm-to-rib fatigue cracks via steel plate reinforcement, finite element models of different-shaped steel plates were established. Stress intensity factors at the crack tip before and after reinforcement were obtained, and the variations in stresses were studied. Polygonal steel plate reinforcements were then carried out on a real bridge based on the finite element calculation results. The changes in stress amplitudes and fatigue damage degrees at the crack tip were analyzed via the rain-flow counting method and Miner’s linear damage accumulating theory. The results show that both the polygonal steel plate and the rectangular steel plate could effectively eliminate the stress concentration and restrain the propagation of cracks. The stresses in other parts of the arc notch increased after reinforcement and polygonal steel plates had less influence. After the reinforcement in a real bridge, the cycle number of high stress amplitudes at the crack tip decreased significantly. The fatigue damage degree of the repaired part reduced by 70.1%, which verified the maintenance effect via polygonal steel plate reinforcement on diaphragm-to-rib fatigue cracks.

Résumé :
PurposeThis paper aims to describe the method for solving vibration problem of electro‐magneto‐elastic plate of polygonal (triangle, square, pentagon and hexagon) cross‐sections using Fourier expansion collocation method (FECM).Design/methodology/approachA mathematical model is developed to study the wave propagation in an electro‐magneto‐elastic plate of polygonal cross‐sections using the theory of elasticity. The frequency equations are obtained from the arbitrary cross‐sectional boundary conditions, since the boundary is irregular in shape; it is difficult to satisfy the boundary conditions along the surface of the plate directly. Hence, the FECM is applied along the boundary to satisfy the boundary conditions. The roots of the frequency equations are obtained by using the secant method, applicable for complex roots.FindingsFrom the literature survey, it is clear that the free vibration of electro‐magneto‐elastic plate of polygonal cross‐sections have not been analyzed by any of the researchers, also the previous investigations in the vibration problems of electro‐magneto‐elastic plates are based on the traditional circular cross‐sections only. So, in this paper, the wave propagation in electro‐magneto‐elastic plate of polygonal cross‐sections is studied using the FECM. The computed non‐dimensional frequencies are plotted in the form of dispersion curves and their characteristics are discussed.Originality/valueThe researchers have discussed the circular, rectangular, triangular and square cross‐sectional plates by the boundary conditions. In this problem, the author studied the vibrations of polygonal (triangle, square, pentagon and hexagon) cross‐sectional plates using the geometrical relation which is applicable to all the cross‐sections. The problem may be extended to any kinds of cross‐sections by using the proper geometrical relations.

Résumé :
For modern weapon systems, the most important factor in survivability is detection capability. Acoustic target strength is a major parameter of the active sonar equation. The traditional target strength equation used to predict the re-radiated intensity for the far field is derived with a plane-wave assumption. In this study, a near-field target strength equation was derived without a plane-wave assumption for a polygonal plate. The target strength equation for polygonal plates, which is applicable to the near field, is provided by the Helmholtz–Kirchhoff formula that is used as the primary equation for solving the re-radiated pressure field. A generalized definition of the sonar cross section is suggested that is applicable to the near field. In comparison experiments for a cylinder, the target strength equation for polygonal plates in near field was executed to verify the validity and accuracy of the analysis. In addition, an underwater vehicle model was analyzed with the developed near-field equation to confirm various parameter effects such as distance and frequency.

Résumé :
In this paper, a solar concentrator is designed in the form of a concave half-cylindrical mirror consisting of polygonal reflective surface plates. The plates are arranged to give a hemispherical shape to the design. These surfaces work to receive solar radiation and focusing by reflecting it to the receiver that is placed in front of the reflecting surfaces. The results are compared with a system consisting of a concave reflecting surface of the same dimensions to obtain a good criterion for evaluating the design performance. The results showed a low acceptance angle for the design for all the samples used due to the geometrical design nature. The optical efficiency affected by the angle of incidence greatly by all the samples used, which differ in the concentration ratio, width and location of the receiver.

Résumé :
The effect of chromium content in the range of 1 wt.%–4 wt.% on the microstructure and mechanical properties of controlled-rolled and direct-quenched 12 mm thick low-carbon (0.04 wt.%) steel plates containing 0.06 wt.% Nb has been studied. In these microalloyed 700 MPa grade steels, the aim was to achieve a robust bainitic microstructure with a yield strength of 700 MPa combined with good tensile ductility and impact toughness. Continuous cooling transformation diagrams of deformed and non-deformed austenite were recorded to study the effect of Cr and hot deformation on the transformation behavior of the investigated steels. Depending on the cooling rate, the microstructures consist of one or more of the following microstructural constituents: bainitic ferrite, granular bainite, polygonal ferrite, and pearlite. The fraction of bainitic ferrite decreases with decreasing cooling rate, giving an increasing fraction of granular bainite and polygonal ferrite and a reduction in the hardness of the transformation products. Polygonal ferrite formation depends mainly on the Cr content and the cooling rate. In both deformed and non-deformed austenite, increasing the Cr content enhances the hardenability and refines the final microstructure, shifting the ferrite start curve to lower cooling rates. Preceding austenite deformation promotes the formation of polygonal ferrite at lower cooling rates, which leads to a decrease in hardness. In hot-rolled and direct-quenched plates, decreasing the Cr content promotes the formation of polygonal ferrite leading to an increase in the impact toughness and elongation but also a loss of yield strength.

Résumé :
White porcelain with 祭(<i>che</i>, ritual), 壽(<i>su</i>, longevity), or 福(<i>pok</i>, good fortune) inscriptions made in Chosŏn royal kilns vary in when and how the letters were written, according their prouction date. From the second quarter of the eighteenth century, when the royal kilns at Kŭmsa-ri were in production, they increased in number and important changes were made to their styles.</br>Firstly, before the 1560s, the letter 祭 was written with brush or incised at the office where the plates were used, but after the 1560s, it was inscribed at the kilns to mark their purposes as ritual. In contrast, the letters 壽 and 福, inscribed to wish for longevity and good fortune were always written at the kilns from their early years until the privatization of the kilns, showing that different letters were written at different moments of production.</br>Secondly, how and where on the plates the letters 祭, 壽, and 福 were written differ according to the underglaze used. From the seventeenth century, the letters were exclusively written in underglaze iron-brown or cobalt blue. Most examples in underglaze iron-brown were written on the underside, inside the foot without a cartouche, or on the inside bottom of a bowl. But those written in underglaze cobalt blue are written on the inside bottom of a bowl with a circle-shaped cartouche. Thirdly, the changes to the shapes of the plates can be seen most clearly in the examples from the royal kilns at Kŭmsa-ri and Punwŏn-ri. Plates with polygonal-shaped high foot and body are characteristic of Kŭmsa-ri kilns, but this style appears only with 福 inscriptions — the plates marked with the letter 祭 have circular foots. However, in the case of Punwŏn-ri kilns, plates with both 祭 and 福 inscriptions were made in the same polygonal style as those of Kŭmsa-ri. There were also 祭 plates with high, circular foots, providing information for its stylistic changes. It is also notable that no royal kilns marked polygonal-shaped plates with the letter 壽.

Résumé :
In general, sound waves propagate radially outwards from a point source. These waves will continue in the same direction, decreasing in intensity, unless a boundary condition is met. To arrive at a universal understanding of the relation between frequency and wave propagation within spatial boundaries, we explore the maximum entropy states that are realized as resonant modes. For both circular and polygonal Chladni plates, a model is presented that successfully recreates the nodal line patterns to a first approximation. We discuss the benefits of such a model and the future work necessary to develop the model to its full predictive ability.

The method involves the use of two-dimensional orthogonal polynomials generated by the Gram-Schmidt recurrence procedure. For the cases of simply supported and fully clamped hexagonal and octagonal plates, the results obtained agreed very well with those existing in the literature. The frequencies and mode shapes for several hexagonal and octagonal plates subjected to mixed boundary conditions are also presented.

Résumé :
To investigate nonlinear bending of the functionally graded (FGM) plates with complex shape and resting on elastic foundation a variational-structural method (RFM) is proposed. Mathematical statement of nonlinear boundary value problems of plate bending is carried out in the framework of the classical geometrically nonlinear plate theory. To solve a sequence of linear boundary value problems obtained as a result of the linearization of the original nonlinear system of equations by the method of successive loadings and the Newton method, the method of R-functions was applied. Testing, as well as comparison of the obtained results with the results of other authors, made it possible to establish the reliability and effectiveness of the developed approach and apply it to study the stress-strain state (SSS) of thin plates with complex shape. A computational experiment was carried out for thin hexagonal plates with mixed boundary conditions for various types of external load and elastic foundation characteristics. The relationship between the greatest deflection of the plate and the load is obtained. The results are presented in the form of graphs.

Résumé :
The pursuit for cheaper energy is leading the current wind tower design to increased heights. Common wind turbine tower designs would generate unjustified costs for transportation and erection leading to inefficient use of materials. In order to reduce these costs, several simplified erection methods have been proposed. One of such is the hybrid lattice-tubular steel tower. For economic feasibility, built-up cold-formed polygonal cross-sections have been proposed for the lattice part. This article presents a numerical investigation of the failure modes of closed polygonal cross-sections. The first part contains a presentation of structural systems which incorporate elements composed of plates and cold-formed members. The evaluation of the polygonal sections is done by means of finite element analysis considering local and global geometrical imperfections and residual stresses generated in the fabrication procedure. A comparative study is performed between several finite element models to propose a corresponding European buckling curve for calculating the flexural buckling resistance. The results show that the design of polygonal sections can be done according to European buckling curves methodology.

Résumé :
A brimmed-diffuser augmented turbine (called a wind lens turbine: WLT) actively uses vortices around the brim to enhance its power output. However, the vortices are usually unstable and asymmetric. This study attempted to stabilize the vortices to enhance the power output of a WLT. Then, we investigated new approaches using vortex stabilization plates and polygonal brims in wind tunnel experiments and numerical simulations. Both approaches achieved a 1.5–3.8% increase in power output compared with a standard WLT. Our numerical simulations revealed a periodicity existing in a fluctuating vortex structure on the circular brim. Importantly, vortex stabilization plates and polygonal brims must be the same periodic scale to suppress the vortex fluctuation and stabilize the vortices effectively. In addition, a larger brim tended to enhance the stabilizing effects. We believe that this discovery provides an easy way to increase the power output of existing wind turbines. It is particularly important in light of advances in wind energy technology and the increasing wind energy market.

Résumé :
The wood anatomy of Didymopanax morototonii (Aubl.) Dcne. & Planch. and Pentapanax warmingianus (March.) Harms. are studied in their general and microscopic features. Both species share the most important anatomical features, described in the literature for the Araliaceae family. Didymopanax morototonii presents vestured and mostly scalariform pits and scalariform perforation plates in vessel members. Pentapanax warmingianus, on the other hand, does not have vestured pits and shows round or polygonal pits and mostly simple perforation plates in vessel members.
