Texte intégralThis study seeks to understand how to design the places of play through the analysis of the relationship between the environment and the behavior of children in recreational areas of multifamily residential buildings that act as the new "street" for children’s leisure, because this has been the place of playing children. Nowadays, with the growth of cities, people reduced their daily appropriation of public space due to increased violence, insecurity and widespread circulation of cars. Consequently, parents do not allow their children plays in the street, so outside the residential limits. Because of this urban context and the increase of the built area in the city, increasing the urban land cost, that the houses are being replaced by vertical buildings that supposedly offer greater security, many of these with a very small area in the apartments. To the child, as the possibility of free play and socialization, left leisure spaces of buildings, which generally work as a selling point, part of a process of "placemarketing". Current projects for children's play in buildings are sometimes composed of flashy elements, entertainment, many colors, characteristics that enchant and sell, because they transmit the visual sensation of a pleasant place for children. However, many scholars of child development approach other positive physical characteristics in spaces for this audience. This study investigated this issue in order to understand how buildings recreation areas projects must be designed to satisfy the necessities of child development, through the analysis of recreational area of a building and a vertical condominium in Porto Alegre-RS, each one of the buildings were built of different construction company and have different physical characteristics. The places were observed most frequently used by children and types of interaction between them, which showed that there is a relationship between the environment and how children interact with each other.

Division within a city is commonplace, if not inevitable, whether geographically, politically, or by income, race or ethnicity. The extreme environment of polarized cities therefore has a significant relevance within urbanism and the study of the built environment of cities in general. The physical markers of dichotomization imposed on the urban landscape, whether in the form of walls, roads, fences or zones of vacant or patrolled land, become a significant presence and extremely meaningful element within the segregated city, and very much so in any future transformation or redevelopment of the city. The question of how to deal with these physical manifestations of conflict and segregation is a key issue within any post-conflict reconstruction and development within these cities, and is the main concern of this thesis proposal. Belfast, in the province of Northern Ireland, is one such polarized city, with the Peacelines manifesting the sectarian tensions between neighbouring communities and the conflict at large. These Peacelines, and surrounding interface areas are the site of this thesis, which attempts to deal with many of the issues associated with architectural intervention in, and the future possible urban morphology of the polarized city, in a specific and complex urban situation.

Public participation, though an integral part of Western contemporary planning practice, is largely viewed as lacking by academics, planning practitioners, and the public at large. The obstacles to more effective planning engagement are abundant: while critique from the lenses of academics and practitioners have been focused in the realm of institutional or structural issues or lack of interest or capacity on the part of the public, this thesis argues that a greater consideration of how people understand and engage with place on an everyday level is necessary. This thesis examines play in the context of planning and place, arguing for play as a component of public participation practice. It proposes play as a participation method that creates space for navigating different understandings of the built environment. Playful engagement with the built environment-whether in the form of manipulation of objects or in movement through space-provides a different lens through which participants view their surroundings. This thesis finds that this engagement with the built environment in this space of play allows for a reconciliation of differing understandings of place and a cultivation of agency within participants.

Texte intégralStadsbarn har idag på grund av trafik och andra hot en begränsad utomhusarena att vistas på. Skolgårdar fyller därför en viktig funktion och det är viktigt att dess utformning gynnar alla barns behov av aktiviteter och utveckling. Syftet med detta arbete var att ta reda på vilken roll skolgårdens utformning har för elevernas val av aktiviteter. Undersökningen gjordes delvis ur ett genusperspektiv. Frågeställningarna under arbetets gång var: Hur ser skolgårdsmiljön ut? Hur utnyttjar eleverna skolgårdsmiljön i sina aktiviteter? Vilka aktiviteter ägnar sig eleverna åt på skolgården? Finns det platser och aktiviteter på skolgården som är genusfria/ genusbundna? Som teoretisk ram valde vi att utgå främst från Lev S Vygotskijs utvecklingspsykologiska teori där leken lyfts fram som en källa till utveckling samt Johan Asplunds forskning kring miljö och platsidentitet. Undersökningarna baserades på direkta observationer av skolgårdsmiljön och elevernas aktiviteter, samt kvalitativa intervjuer med elever och pedagoger för att ta reda på deras perspektiv kring skolgårdens utformning. Arbetet var avgränsat till en jämförelse mellan två olika skolgårdar i Stockholms innerstad. Barnen som deltog i undersökningen var från årskurs ett till årskurs tre på båda skolorna. Resultatet visade att skolgårdens miljö både kan gynna och begränsa barn i sina val av platser och aktiviteter. Små rum med naturinslag bidrar till att miljön är tolkningsbar på olika sätt, barnen får inspiration och öppnar upp sin tankevärld. Skolträdgården, med många rörliga naturinslag som växter, vatten och stubbar, uppmuntrar barns kreativa förmåga och fantasi. Skolträdgården är en plats som innehåller upplevelsemässiga aspekter. Asfaltsytan på skolgården är ett bra underlag för både bollspel och många andra regellekar. Aktiviteter på skolgården äger rum oavsett hur miljön ser ut. Barn har ett behov av att röra på sig samt utvecklas motoriskt, kognitivt och socialt genom valet av olika lekar och aktiviteter. Vår studie visade att traditionella könsroller kan suddas ut genom att pedagogerna uppmuntrar aktiviteter som bryter mot tidigare föreställningar kring manligt och kvinnligt. Pedagogerna har en viktig roll som goda och inspirerande förebilder. Den viktigaste slutsatsen i studien var att en rik miljö bidrar till mer inspiration i valet av aktiviteter än om miljön är torftig. Om alla platser på en skolgård känns trygga och om det finns en variationsrik miljö med mycket naturinslag så skapas stora förutsättningar för att aktiviteter och lust äger rum på precis hela skolgården.

Finally, through the projected financial analysis, the fulfillment of the short, medium and long term objectives will be confirmed, as well as scalability; ensuring growth over the years.
