Résumé :
The AlSi10Mg alloy was processed by selective laser melting using both hot- and cold-build platforms. The investigation was aimed at defining suitable platform pre-heating and post-process thermal treatment strategies, taking into consideration the peculiar microstructures generated. Microstructural analyses, differential scanning calorimetry, and high-resolution diffraction from synchrotron radiation, showed that in the cold platform as-built condition, the amount of supersaturated Si was higher than in hot platform samples. The best hardness and tensile performance were achieved upon direct aging from cold platform-printed alloys. The hot platform strategy led to a loss in the aging response, since the long processing times spent at high temperature induced a substantial overaging effect, already in the as-built samples. Finally, the standard T6 temper consisting of post-process solution annealing followed by artificial aging, resulted in higher ductility but lower mechanical strength.

Résumé :
Abstract. Microphysical and radiation measurements were collected with the novel AIRcraft TOwed Sensor Shuttle (AIRTOSS) – Learjet tandem platform. The platform is a combination of an instrumented Learjet 35A research aircraft and an aerodynamic bird, which is detached from and retracted back to the aircraft during flight via a steel wire with a length of 4000 m. Both platforms are equipped with radiative, cloud microphysical, trace gas, and meteorological instruments. The purpose of the development of this tandem set-up is to study the inhomogeneity of cirrus as well as other stratiform clouds. Sophisticated numerical flow simulations were conducted in order to optimally integrate an axially asymmetric Cloud Combination Probe (CCP) inside AIRTOSS. The tandem platform was applied during measurements at altitudes up to 36 000 ft (10 970 m) in the framework of the AIRTOSS – Inhomogeneous Cirrus Experiment (AIRTOSS-ICE). Ten flights were performed above the North Sea and Baltic Sea to probe frontal and in situ formed cirrus, as well as anvil outflow cirrus. For one flight, cirrus microphysical and radiative properties displayed significant inhomogeneities resolved by both measurement platforms. The CCP data show that the maximum of the observed particle number size distributions shifts with decreasing altitude from 30 to 300 µm, which is typical for frontal, midlatitude cirrus. Theoretical considerations imply that cloud particle aggregation inside the studied cirrus is very unlikely. Consequently, diffusional growth was identified to be the dominant microphysical growth process. Measurements of solar downward and upward irradiances at 670 nm wavelength were conducted above, below, and in the cirrus on both the Learjet and AIRTOSS. The observed variability of the downward irradiance below the cirrus reflects the horizontal heterogeneity of the observed thin cirrus. Vertically resolved solar heating rates were derived by either using single-platform measurements at different altitudes or by making use of the collocated irradiance measurements at different altitudes of the tandem platform. Due to unavoidable biases of the measurements between the individual flight legs, the single-platform approach failed to provide a realistic solar heating rate profile, while the uncertainties of the tandem approach are reduced. Here, the solar heating rates range up to 6 K day−1 at top of the cirrus layer.

Résumé :
Abstract To test, evaluate and characterize new integrated circuits (ICs) for high temperature application no easy, cheap or portable platform is available. On the other hand, industrial applications require more and more high temperature circuits. To solve all these problems, a novel and modular platform was developed by IMMS, which allows for heating ICs up to 300 °C. The main feature is the portable high temperature fixture with integrated heating capability combined with a reliable method to contact the device. This way the device can be operated and heated at the same time. The platform was applied to a high temperature sensor interface which conditions signals from Wheatstone pressure sensors. Due to the modularity, the presented platform can be adapted to characterization as well as demonstration scenarios. By observing the circuit during heating and cooling processes, the performance can be recorded in real time by the integrated single board computer.

Résumé :
In a district heating engineering project, the design of the heating route is an indispensable but laborious process. This paper proposes a planning indicator to measure the suitability of a candidate heating route, and provides an intelligent method and a convenient tool for the preliminary design of the district heating route. The Fengrun heating engineering project was chosen as a case study. The remote sensing imagery and OpenStreetMap were used as the data sources. First, the remote sensing imagery was classified into five classes and converted into binary images. Second, the district heating route planning indicator was defined based on the cost function. The cost function and the updating strategy of the ant colony system algorithm were modified according to the heating route selection requirement. Additionally, the parallel computing technology was adopted to improve the efficiency. With the help of the open source Cesium engine and the three-dimensional (3D) WebGIS technology, an interactive route design platform that combined our algorithm was finally provided. The optimum routes by the platform were compared to the corresponding sequential algorithm, the route selected manually, as well as the commercial ArcGIS platform. The proposed algorithm can get 28 candidate routes with better indicator values than the manually selected route. Compared to the corresponding sequential algorithm, our algorithm improved the efficiency by 4.789 times. The proposed 3D WebGIS tool is more applicable and user-friendly for the heating route design.

Résumé :
The growing importance of bio-based products, combined with the desire to decrease the production of wastes, boosts the necessity to use wastes as raw materials for bio-based products. A waste material with a large potential is spent sugar beets, which are mainly used as animal feeds or fertilizers. After hydrothermal treatment, the produced chars exhibited an H/C ratio of 1.2 and a higher heating value of 22.7 MJ/kg, which were similar to that of subbituminous coal and higher than that of lignite. Moreover, the treatment of 25 g/L of glucose and 22 g/L of fructose by heating up to 160 °C led to a possible application of spent sugar beets for the production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. In the present study, the maximum concentration of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural was 3.4 g/L after heating up to 200 °C.

Résumé :
AbstractTwo adult Podarcis muralis whose normal movements incorporated the flat top of a wall, frequently paused so that they were looking outwards from an edge ("scan" posture), especially during longer (≥9 s) periods immobile. Investigations of the posture on raised wooden platforms in outdoor enclosures, using two juvenile lizards, showed that (1) lizards spent significantly more time on platforms than would be expected from random movement, and this was not because wood is a favoured substrate for basking; (2) lizards which were immobile on platforms spent significantly more time at edges than would be expected by chance; (3) body orientations at 67.5-112.5° to the edge were the most frequent and these were maintained for significantly longer periods than the remaining orientations; exceptions were from 0800-0900 h when orientation was often parallel to the edge facing the sun and from 1200-1300 h with only a thin strip of shade at 45°, into which the lizards fitted themselves. Lizards basking in the laboratory beneath a tungsten bulb at the edge of a raised platform adopted outward-facing orientations when the platform height was ≥6 mm. When presented with a choice between basking more effectively (i.e. rapid heating rate) or adopting the "scan" posture at an edge with a lower heating rate or with no heating, they opted for the former. Podarcis sicula, P. filfolensis, Lacerta viridis and L. vivipara all showed an excess of outward-facing orientations when the basking bulbs were place near edges of platforms, but Psammodromus hispanicus did not. Only the two Podarcis species, however, spent more time on raised platforms than would be expected by chance when basking was possible at many sites in an arena.

Résumé :
The energy performance of a variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system was evaluated using an occupancy-emulated research building in the southeastern region of the United States. Full- and part-load performance of the VRF system in heating and cooling seasons was compared with a conventional rooftop unit (RTU) variable-air-volume system with electric resistance heating. During both the heating and cooling seasons, full- and part-load conditions (i.e., 100%, 75%, and 50% thermal loads) were maintained alternately for 2 to 3 days each, and the energy use, thermal conditions, and coefficient of performance (COP) for the RTU and VRF system were measured. During the cooling season, the VRF system had an average COP of 4.2, 3.9, and 3.7 compared with 3.1, 3.0, and 2.5 for the RTU system under 100%, 75%, and 50% load conditions and resulted in estimated energy savings of 30%, 37%, and 47%, respectively. During the heating season, the VRF system had an average COP ranging from 1.2 to 2.0, substantially higher than the COPs of the RTU system, and resulted in estimated energy savings of 51%, 47%, and 27% under the three load conditions, respectively.

Résumé :
The design of the suspended nonlinear heating system of modular-trigger and platform furnaces for firing vermiculite and other bulk materials is considered. Previously, the design of linear heating systems did not provide homogeneous heating of thermographed materials, the material in the clutch zones suffered sufficient thermal energy. In addition, overheating of the central zone increased the frequency of the impact of the heaters themselves, which affected the reliability of the furnace. The use of a nonlinear heating system has changed this distribution to the opposite. The power of the intuboxic heater exceeded the power of the central 1,2‒1,36 times depending on the ratio of the diameters of thin and thick (diameter of 4 mm) of the heaters. At the same time, not only their electrical power increased, but the heat radiation streams, falling onto the surface of the supply, which led to an increase in the temperature of the material being processed. The obtained values of the temperature of the vermiculite grains in the fitted zones of the firing module exceed the temperature of the vermiculite in the central zone by 26 %, while it is sufficient for high-quality material intimidation. Due to the use of nonlinear heating system, temperatures were redistributed on heated surfaces in favor of relatively cold previously intuition zones: the heat picture has changed to the opposite, that is, the cold cloth zones have become relatively hot. Résumé :
Fast and fully automated deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) amplification methods are of interest in the research on lab-on-a-disc (LOD) platforms because of their full compatibility with the spin-column mechanism using centrifugal force. However, the standard procedures followed in DNA amplification require accurate noncontact temperature control as well as cell lysis at a low temperature to prevent damage to the LOD platform. This requirement makes it challenging to achieve full automation of DNA amplification on an LOD. In this paper, a fully automated LOD capable of performing cell lysis and amplification on a single compact disc of DNA samples is proposed. The proposed system uses micro-carbon to heat DNA samples without damaging the LOD as well as a noncontact heating system and an infrared camera sensor to remotely measure the real temperature of the amplification chamber. Compared with conventional DNA amplification systems, the proposed system has the advantage of full automation of the LOD platform. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed system offers a stable heating method for DNA amplification and cell lysis.

Résumé :
District heating is seen as an important concept to decarbonize heating systems and meet climate mitigation goals. However, the decision related to where central heating is most viable is dependent on many different aspects, like heating densities or current heating structures. An urban energy simulation platform based on 3D building objects can improve the accuracy of energy demand calculation on building level, but lacks a system perspective. Energy system models help to find economically optimal solutions for entire energy systems, including the optimal amount of centrally supplied heat, but do not usually provide information on building level. Coupling both methods through a novel heating grid disaggregation algorithm, we propose a framework that does three things simultaneously: optimize energy systems that can comprise all demand sectors as well as sector coupling, assess the role of centralized heating in such optimized energy systems, and determine the layouts of supplying district heating grids with a spatial resolution on the street level. The algorithm is tested on two case studies; one, an urban city quarter, and the other, a rural town. In the urban city quarter, district heating is economically feasible in all scenarios. Using heat pumps in addition to CHPs increases the optimal amount of centrally supplied heat. In the rural quarter, central heat pumps guarantee the feasibility of district heating, while standalone CHPs are more expensive than decentral heating technologies.

Résumé :
An anti-/deicing component of composite materials for wind turbine blades is usually carried out under heating conditions. In order to study the ice adhesion properties of composite anti-/deicing component under heating conditions, an experimental platform for measuring ice adhesion force on composites was set up. Based on the heating parameters such as the heating temperature, heating voltage, and heating time, the experiments of ice adhesion of composite anti-/deicing component under deicing conditions were designed by orthogonal analysis. In this article, ice adhesion forces on composite anti-/deicing component were measured at −9.74°C, −11.58°C, −14.1°C, and −16.84°C by the proposed experiment platform, and the real ice adhesion forces under various heating parameters were measured. Through the analysis of experimental data and fitting method, the relationship between various factors and ice adhesion on composite anti-/deicing component was expounded. The influence weight of each heating parameter on the ice adhesion was analyzed. In addition, the mathematical model of ice adhesion on composite anti-/deicing component under deicing condition was established to describe the influence of deicing variables on ice adhesion in the experiments. According to the fitting function of the experimental data, the relationship between the heat consumption of composite anti-/deicing component and ice adhesion force in the process of heating is in accordance with the inverse power exponential expression, which reveals the internal relationship between ice adhesion force and energy consumption.

Résumé :
Probing quark matter is one of the important tasks in the studies of neutron stars (NS). Some works explicitly consider the existence of quark matter in the appearance of hybrid star (HS) or pure quark star (QS). In the present work, we study the roto-chemical heating with accretion in HS and QS, and compare their chemical evolution and cooling features with pure NS. Different from HS and NS, there are two jumps in the chemical evolution of QS, which results from the fast direct Urca (Durca) reaction causing the fast recovery to chemical balance. However, the sudden change in the chemical evolution doesn’t provide an obvious heating effect in the thermal evolution. Differently, the roto-chemical heating effect appears both in the accretion phase and spin-down phase of the HS, and the heating platform in the accretion phase relies on the accretion rate. Larger accretion rate results in larger chemical deviation, higher and longer heating platform, and earlier appearance of the heating effect. Interestingly, with the disappearance of the heating effect in the accretion phase, the surface temperature drops fast, which is another possibility of the rapid cooling trend of the NS in Cas A. Furthermore, the surface temperature of the QS is obviously lower than the HS and NS, which is a latent candidate for the explanation of the old classical pulsar J2144-3933 with the lowest known surface temperature.

Résumé :
Combined use of thermal analysis techniques can realize complementarity of different characterization methods. Comprehensive thermal analysis with both thermogravimetric analysis and differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA) can measure not only mass change of a sample but also its temperature change during programmed heating-induced reaction or phase transition processes, thereby obtaining multiaspect thermal information of the material such as dehydration, structural decomposition, phase change and thermal stability. This study proposes and develops a MEMS chip-based TG/DTA microsystem that integrates both programmed heating and detecting elements into a TG chip and a DTA chip to enable the microinstrument performing TG/DTA joint characterization under microscope observation. The TG chip contains a self-heating resonant microcantilever to measure heating-induced mass change of a sample and the DTA chip is with a microheater and a temperature-detecting thermopile integrated on a suspended thermal-insulating diaphragm. Only nanogram and microgram-level samples are needed for the TG and DTA chips, thereby achieving safe measurement to energetic materials such as strong oxidants. The chip-based microinstrument surpasses the state-of-the-art commercial TG/DTA instruments that have, in the long term, suffered from large sample-amount (milligram level) requirements and have been unable to measure energetic materials. Compared with commercial instruments, the chip-based microinstrument is advantageous given its more accurate analysis, much higher heating rate, much smaller instrument volume and much lower power consumption, etc. The microinstrument has been fabricated by using wafer-level MEMS techniques. Testing results show that the mass-detection sensitivity of the TG-chip is as high as 0.45 Hz/pg in air and the temperature sensitivity of the DTA chip achieves 2.9 mV/K under the high heating rate of 25 °C/s. The strong oxidant of KMnO4 is analyzed with the TG/DTA joint characterization under microscopic observation. At the same time as microscope observation of the thermal decomposition phenomena, two-step thermal decomposition process of KMnO4 is identified and the thermal decomposition temperatures are obtained. The TG/DTA microinstrument is promising to be applied for study of various materials.

Résumé :
Aluminum alloys processed through selective laser melting possess unique features of microstructure, defect morphology and mechanical properties. Constitution of fine cellular dendrites results from the high-cooling rate of the melt pool during the consolidation process. Investigation of the microstructure by scanning electron microscopy identifies supersaturation of Si particles as a secondary strengthening mechanism. On the contrary, platform heating that induces coarser microstructure leads to migration of Si particles from the Al matrix to the eutectic phase. As a result, tensile strength is reduced by ~3%, while fracture strain is increased by ~17%. Fine-grained structures exhibit a lower amount of plastic damage accumulation as well as delayed crack initiation as determined by the applied measurement techniques. Finite element models of the investigated configurations are obtained using scans of computed tomography under consideration of process-induced defects. Comparison of modeling and experimental results concluded that dominant fatigue damage mechanisms are related to the loading regime from low-cycle (LCF) to very-high-cycle fatigue (VHCF). Thus, process-inherent features of microstructure and porosity have different quantitative effects concerning the applied load. In VHCF, a material configuration with platform heating possesses an improved fatigue strength by ~33% at 1E9 cycles, concerning the material configuration without platform heating.

Résumé :
N-Glycan analysis is routinely performed for biotherapeutic protein characterization. A recently introduced N-glycan analysis kit using RapiFluor-MS (RFMS) labeling provides time savings over reductive amination labeling methods while also providing enhanced fluorescence (FLR) and mass spectrometry (MS) responses. This article demonstrates the semiautomation of this kit using an Andrew Alliance pipetting robot that promises further gains in productivity. This robotic platform uses standard manual pipettors and an optically guided arm to facilitate the automation of manual procedures. The manual RFMS protocol includes two heating and cooling steps during protein denaturation and de-N-glycosylation. However, the current Andrew Alliance automated platform cannot move reaction tubes to and from different heating blocks. As a result, samples prepared using the automated procedure remain in a computer-controlled Peltier effect heating block, requiring reoptimization of denaturation and de-N-glycosylation temperatures. Using hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography to monitor the RFMS-labeled glycan profiles, the authors demonstrated the reproducibility of the automated protocol with percent relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 9%–19% for the total area and 0.8%–20% for the relative areas of major and minor glycoforms. Overall, the automated platform presented here proves to be a convenient and reliable solution for N-glycan preparation and analysis.

Résumé :
Abstract Laminates or sequential build-up (SBU) laminate comprised of dielectric materials, metal traces, and metal vias not only serve as the mechanical support for the silicon integrated circuits (ICs), but also electrically connect ICs to ball grid array (BGA); by way of an embedded power delivery structure. Electrical current required to power the ICs is carried through spatially distributed metal traces and vias. The non-uniformity in the power distribution may induce hotspots due to parasitic Ohmic heating; especially in regions with high current density. Electrical packaging engineers need effective tools to identify, quantify, and mitigate hot spots in the laminate. Thermoelectrical multiphysical simulation provides a robust platform integrating the electrical, and thermal analyses for the study of joule heating in a complex design. Conventional simulations simplify detailed laminate wiring layout as a single planar with effective orthogonal material properties. Such simplification provides a solution to the inherent simulation challenges encountered with a complex design (i.e. tiny characteristic lengths, high aspect ratios, excessive computational time and resources). However, simplification comes with a price. Information required to optimize the detail trace and via wiring physical design is unavailable in a solution incorporating an effective laminate; laminate joule heating as well as non-uniform trace wiring are left out. The laminate temperature profile is averaged based on effective material properties. Without accurate joule heating evaluation, the hotspots cannot be identified or quantified. Overheating inside the laminate compromises signal speed and integrity, raises reliability concerns, and may even trigger catastrophic damage of dielectric material breakdown. This work introduces an iterative approach integrating the detailed laminate electrical computer aided design (ECAD) and package design to simulate the joule heating with minimum simplification. The iterative loop enables constant update of temperature (thru thermal simulation platform) and power distribution (thru electrical simulation platform) in each trace layer and via. An accurate temperature dependent Joule Heating assessment is achieved upon convergence. The solution captures the dependence on temperature of the material properties and of the Joule heating itself. The package level structure including an IC with a power map is incorporated to simulate in-situ package operating condition. After thorough investigation and analyses of laminate joule heating phenomena under different conditions, a predictive curve for maximum temperature rise percentage has been proposed to guide laminate wiring layout physical design and optimization. A ratio exceeding 4–5% joule heating to IC power is recommended as the check point for simulation to assess laminate overheating issues with detailed trace layout information.

Résumé :
To meet the indoor heat load demand of greenhouses in China rural areas in winter, the authors proposed and designed a novel biomass heating system in greenhouses. The system uses biomass flue gas as the thermal working medium and heats the shallow soil inside the greenhouse through the buried flue gas-soil heat exchanger, thereby improving the indoor thermal environment of the greenhouse. To further study the heating system performance, we built up the heating experimental platform in a plastic greenhouse. Through testing the actual operation effect of the biomass heating system of the plastic greenhouse, no taking any heating measures system, the biomass heating system of the plastic greenhouse can improve the air average temperature and the soil average temperature 5.1 °C and 8.2 °C, respectively. The greenhouse biomass heating system is very economical, compared with the greenhouse without heating system, which can bring a 105% excess return rate for farmers every year. This study has obvious significance to promote the sustainable development of rural agriculture and the efficient utilization of rural biomass resources.

Résumé :
A platform for a flexible, smart sensing system using available hardware components for monitoring the operation of a greenhouse is presented. The smart sensor is based on a ZigBee MCU embedded system with multiple connectivity options to facilitate digital or analogue sensors as well as the necessary peripherals for energy management and programming/debugging. A number of physical parameters may be simultaneously monitored by each node, such as temperature, relative humidity, CO2, light intensity, soil pH / moisture through appropriate sensors. Basic functions, such as sensor differential detection and measurement consistency may be performed at the smart sensor. A central node, also acting as the Zigbee network coordinator will concentrate the various measurements through the wireless network, act as a local display and also forward the information to a back-end. The back-end will provide proper measurement visualization (including history) through any web-enabled device, as well as services such as alert notification in hazardous situations (e.g. flood / heating failure).

Résumé :
This paper describes the development and implementation of an electronic platform for energy management in public buildings. The developed platform prototype is based on the installation of a network of wireless sensors using the emerging Long Range (LoRa) low power long-range wireless network technology. This network is used to collect sensor data, which is stored online and manipulated to extract knowledge and generate actions toward energy saving solutions. In this process, gamification approaches were used to motivate changes in the users’ behavior towards more sustainable actions in public buildings. These actions and the associated processes can be implemented as public services, and they can be replicated to different public buildings, contributing to a more energy-sustainable world. The developed platform allows the monitoring and management of the heating/cooling, electric power consumption, and lighting levels. In order to validate the proposed electronic platform, sensor information was collected in the context of a university campus, which was used as an application scenario in public buildings.

Résumé :
Control approaches of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems in buildings have been proposed in the past years for minimizing energy consumption and maintaining occupants’ comfort. However, recent studies have shown that context-driven control approaches using Internet of things and data stream processing technologies could further improve energy saving in heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. In this article, an intelligent control approach using a state feedback technique is introduced to regulate the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system according to the actual context. The proposed thermal state feedback control was then implemented and deployed in our EEBLab to study its effectiveness in a real-setting scenario. The performance of the proposed control was evaluated in a real test-site by deploying a control card that links the controller with the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. A smart mobile application for real feedback control was also developed and deployed to dynamically adapt the controller to context’s changes. The mobile application and the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system communicate and exchange data under a data acquisition and visualization platform. In this article, a holistic platform that combines Internet of things and data stream processing technologies was developed and deployed in a real-setting scenario. Experiments have been performed, and results are reported to demonstrate the effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed approach in terms of energy saving while maintaining a comfortable room temperature. The proposed state feedback control outperforms the proportional–integral–derivative and ON/OFF approaches in terms of energy consumption while providing acceptable thermal comfort by allowing a neutral thermal sensation with ± 0.30 of predictive mean vote and less than 7% of predicted percentage of dissatisfaction.

Résumé :
Plasmonic heating finds multiple applications in cell manipulation and stimulation, where heat generated by metal nanoparticles can be used to modify cell adhesion, control membrane currents, and suppress neuronal action potentials among others. Metal nanoparticles can also be easily integrated in artificial extracellular matrices to provide tunable, thermal cueing functionalities with nanometer spatial resolution. In this contribution, we present a platform enabling the combination of plasmonic heating with localized temperature sensing using quantum dots (QDs). Specifically, a functional nanocomposite material was designed with gold nanorods (AuNRs) and QDs incorporated in a cell-permissive hydrogel (e.g., collagen) as well as an optical set-up combining optical heating and temperature imaging, respectively. Specific area stimulation/readout can be realized through structured illumination using digital micromirror device (DMD) projection.
