Résumé :
In this paper, the dynamics of a micro-nano particle on the micro-thin plate driven by an acoustic signal was investigated, including the particle kinematics mode, kinematics equation, and trajectory control. According to Newton’s kinematic theorem, analyzing the forces acting on the particle, the kinematic modes of the driven particle are distinguished with specific mathematical conditions, which are classified as slide, bounce, and stable modes strictly planned on a thin plate area. Based on the theory of kinematic modal analysis, the simulation results reveal the distribution rules of particle motion modes against the driving signal or plate geometry. The particle kinematics equation governing the sliding movement on the thin plate was then derived in light of the interaction between the particle and driving signal, based on which, the particle trajectory was drawn and analyzed in detail. For the purpose of controlling the particle trajectory, the control problem was designed in accordance with a linear active disturbance rejection controller (LADRC). Further, a guidance law was proposed, and the corresponding controller was designed to realize the linear trajectory following.

Résumé :
AbstractThe recent proliferation of deformable plate tectonic modelling techniques has provided a new direction in the study of plate tectonics with substantial implications for our understanding of plate deformation and past kinematics. Such models account for intraplate deformation, yet are highly variable in their inputs, capabilities and applications. The aim of this commentary is to review recent contributions to this topic, and to consider future directions and major omissions. Through this review it is apparent that the current published deformable models can be subdivided into those that as an input either: (1) solely use plate motions to drive deformation, or (2) require stretching or beta factor. Deformable models are resolving some outstanding issues with plate reconstructions, but major simplifications and modelling assumptions remain. Primarily, obtaining model constraints on the spatio-temporal evolution of deformation is an outstanding problem. Deformable plate models likely work best when the kinematics of smaller plates are included. However, questions remain regarding how to define such blocks, and their kinematic histories, whilst some work suggests that inclusion of such entities is negated through quantitative restorations.

Résumé :
Previous studies on one-sided lapping allow to state that not only parameters of lapping elements (i.e. properties of workpiece, abrasive grains and lapping plate) impact on a lapping efficiency. Influential are also kinematics and dynamics of the process. It is crucial to control an average velocity of lapping (v), a distribution of tangential acceleration (at), a nominal pressure (p), a lapping time (t) and disposal of workpiece in separator.Based on kinematics equations and the tribological models, the dimensionless distribution of the material removal volume and the trajectories of abrasive grains cutting on the lap were numerically simulated. Obtained information about excessive wear on lapping plate was the starting point to work out non-standard, single-plate lapping systems. In this paper ideas of unconventional lapping systems were presented. After numerous simulations and careful analysis it was observed, that the most desirable system is radial lapping system. It was point out that other systems are not very different from the standard kinematic system. Generated trajectories of an abrasive grain were almost identical. What is more, effects of kinematical parameters on the trajectories, velocities and accelerations observed in radial lapping system are shown.

Résumé :
This paper proposes and develops a kinematics-based, systematic approach to determine the region of a plate to be rolled, in order to fabricate smoothly curved plates. The approach includes a kinematic analysis to calculate the plate’s curvature distribution, and, in addition, a linear regression analysis to determine the initial and final locations of the roller during the roll bending process. Three artificial cases and two real cases have been studied, and the results are in good agreement with field practices. This approach will play an important role in the automation and optimization of the plate forming process.

Résumé :
The present paper assessed the use of variable kinematic two-dimensional elements in the dynamic analysis of Lamb waves propagation in an isotropic plate with piezo-patches. The multi-field finite element model used in this work was based on the Carrera Unified Formulation which offers a versatile application enabling the model to apply the desired order theory. The used variable kinematic model allowed for the kinematic model to vary in space, thereby providing the possibility to implement a classical plate model in collaboration with a refined kinematic model in selected areas where higher order kinematics are needed. The propagation of the symmetric (S0) and the antisymmetric (A0) fundamental lamb waves in an isotropic strip was considered in both mechanical and piezo-elastic plate models. The convergence of the models was discussed for different kinematics approaches, under different mesh refinement, and under different time steps. The results were compared to the exact solution proposed in the literature in order to assess and further determine the effects of the different parameters used when dynamically modeling a Lamb wave propagating in such material. It was shown that the higher order kinematic models delivered a higher accuracy of the propagating wave evaluated using the corresponding Time Of Flight (TOF). Upon using the appropriate mesh refinement of 2000 elements and sufficient time steps of 4000 steps, the error between the TOF obtained analytically and numerically using a high order kinematics was found to be less than 1% for both types of fundamental Lamb waves S0 and A0. Node-dependent kinematics models were also exploited in wave propagation to decrease the computational cost and to study their effect on the accuracy of the obtained results. The obtained results show, in both the mechanical and the piezo-electric models, that a reduction in the computational cost of up to 50% can be easily attained using such models while maintaining an error inferior to 1%.

Résumé :
This paper establishes position error model based on parallel robot kinematics theory, and analyses position error of the 3-TPS hybrid machine tool. Firstly, to calculate position error of the movable plate caused by the parallel mechanism links, through error model of the parallel mechanism which is established through inverse kinematics of the hybrid machine tool. Then, according to the error model of constraint mechanism established by transformation matrix method, the position error has been simulated and calculated. Finally, this paper compares the effects of both mechanisms. The analysis indicates the link error of constraint mechanism has more influence on movable plate posture than parallel mechanism, and provides help with motion error compensation and kinematic calibration.

Eagles, Graeme. « Modelling plate kinematics in the Scotia Sea ». Thesis, University of Leeds, 2000. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/258/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
A new model of plate kinematics in the Scotia Sea region is presented in which continental crustal blocks and the signatures of seafloor spreading are defined semi-automatically using gravity and total field magnetic anomalies and some of their residuals, transformations and derivatives. This study is the first of the region to integrate gridded magnetic and gravity data in order to make reconstructions, and one of the first anywhere to make full use of gridded magnetic data in an inverse procedure. The context provided by the quantitative reconstructions allows qualitative assessment of visually-derived reconstructions of small movements in the region. The Scotia Sea floor consists of three large oceanic magnetic provinces: the west, central and east Scotia seas, and four smaller sub-basins, all enclosed within the elevated submarine and emergent Scotia Arc. The Scotia Arc consists of Mesozoic continental and Cenozoic island-arc fragments. Only the east Scotia Sea remains active; the west and central parts are the products of extinct spreading centres. West Scotia sea spreading is reasonably well described by tectonic flowlines expressed in satellite free-air gravity anomalies and magnetic reversal isochrons in total field anomalies. These data are combined in an inversion to reconstruct the west Scotia Sea's margins between its inception at thron C8 (- 26.5 Ma) and extinction at chron C3a (- 6 Ma). The results suggest strongly, and for the first time, that the west Scotia Sea formed as a small ocean basin whose passive margins were Tierra del Fuego and the central Scotia Sea, and not as a back-arc basin in the strict sense. During its growth the kinematics of the west Scotia Sea's margins approximated those of the South American and Antarctic plates. The small kinematic differences are suggested to be due to convergence at the `proto-South Sandwich-Discovery' subduction zone, to the east of the central Scotia Sea, and to dextral strike-slip (pre-C6 (N 20 Ma)) and oblique convergence (post-C6) at the North Scotia Ridge, the Mesozoic northern arm of the Scotia Arc. The most widely-accepted interpretations of the central Scotia Sea hold that it is a back-arc basin, but model flowlines about published reconstruction poles in the region show that instead it could have originated by accretion to the South American plate at the ancestral South American-Antarctic Ridge in the Weddell Sea, later to move eastwards as the eastern passive margin to the west Scotia Sea. Magnetic reversal anomalies in the central Scotia Sea are consistent with its accretion in this way during the Cretaceous, probably between chrons M4 and M20 (- 126-149 Ma). All of this material was hitherto thought to have been destroyed completely by subduction at the ancestors of the South Sandwich subduction zone. The central Scotia Sea is thus also re-assigned in the model to have an oceanic, rather than back-arc basin, origin. Hence, the bulk of the Scotia Sea floor formed as a consequence of the predictable movements of major plates following the break-up of Gondwana, with back-arc basins in the strict sense only forming small subbasins until the inception of the east Scotia Sea at or soon after C5c. The development of this much larger, oceanic, back-arc basin occurred following a change in the direction of relative motion at the West Scotia and South American-Antarctic Ridges at C6. This new model of Scotia Sea kinematics, presented as a series of reconstructions of total field and Bouguer anomalies, is the first to be both self-consistent and consistent within the context of known major plate motions. The new interpretation of the central Scotia Sea is at odds with previous reconstructions which place South Georgia in the heart of a reconstructed compact connection between Tierra del Fuego and the Antarctic Peninsula. The altered position of South Georgia, south of Maurice Ewing Bank (Falkland Plateau) helps explain the puzzling provenance of its turbidites and suggests, as previous workers have done, that it may be appropriate to redefine the genesis of at least the eastern part of the Rocas Verdes Basin as an oceanic basin formed by accretion at a propagating rift, rather than (as before) a rare example of a back-arc basin formed behind an east-directed subduction zone. Although the new model is self-consistent, it is not uniquely so for two of the small basins in the Scotia Sea (Protector and Dove Basins) whose age remains poorly defined. It can be speculated that either or both of these basins may have opened deep-water gateways in the Drake Passage region prior to spreading in the west Scotia Sea, possibly in the Middle Eocene. A very tentative correlation between such events and initial cooling prior to the onset of Antarctic glaciation, via the cooling effect of establishing an efficient Antarctic Circumpolar Current, is suggested.

The aim of this work is the development of two classes of new four-node and eightnode quadrilateral finite elements implemented into the commercial finite element (FE) code Abaqus for composite plates. Variable kinematics plate models are formulated in the framework of Carrera’s Unified Formulation (CUF), which encompasses Equivalent Single Layer (ESL) as well as Layer-Wise (LW) models, with the variables that are defined by polynomials up to 4th order along the thickness direction z. The two classes refer to two variational formulations that are employed to derive the finite elements matrices, namely the Principle of Virtual Displacement (PVD) and Reissner’s Mixed Variational Theorem (RMVT). Thanks to the static condensation technique, a Hybrid formulation based on the RMVT is derived. For the purpose of eliminating the shear locking pathology, two field compatible approximations for only the z−constant transverse shear strain terms, referred to as QC4 and CL8 interpolations, are extended to all variable kinematics CUF plate elements. Moreover, the QC4S and CL8S interpolations, are also introduced for the transverse shear stress field within RMVT-based and Hybrid mixed-based elements. Numerical results in comparison with those available in literature show that the proposed FEs are efficient for modeling a robust finite elements

Résumé :
Modern plate reconstructions, with evolving plate boundaries that document the breakup of Pangea hold vital clues for the factors affecting plate motions. Previous studies have evaluated the present-day plate arrangements and velocities, and therefore cannot capture the inherent plate behaviour over deep geological time. A handful of studies have used plate reconstructions to alleviate these temporal shortcomings, but have been limited by the small number of plate reconstruction timesteps, leading to conflicting suggestions that continents may both inhibit or promote fast plate motions. This thesis demonstrates that increasing portions of continental plate area significantly reduces plate velocities when using a post-Pangea plate reconstruction framework. However, plates with large continents exhibit short-lived (~5-10 Myr) but high-amplitude anomalous accelerations that are often related to plume head arrivals. The breakup of Pangea opened the vast Atlantic, Indian and Southern Oceans at the expense of the equatorial oceanic gateway that linked the Tethys and (proto-) Pacific. Refined reconstructions of this lost oceanic gateway, in the absence of preserved oceanic crust, required a synthesis of geological data from the continents that travelled on these now-subducted plates. By coupling the refined plate reconstructions to numerical mantle flow simulations, this thesis demonstrates that the short-lived (~10-15 Myr) subduction hiatus from the accretion of continental blocks at ~80 Ma along southern Sundaland resulted in ~200 m of dynamic uplift of the continental promontory, which was likely responsible for the enigmatic Late Cretaceous to Paleocene regional unconformity. The approaches presented in this thesis highlight the need for data-driven global plate reconstructions, coupled to geodynamic simulations of mantle flow in a global spherical mantle shell, to study both the global plate-mantle system but also address regional geological enigmas.

Résumé :
Abstract A prototype of a simple, footwear-testing machine which mimics the physiologic motions and forces of walking in one plane has been designed, developed and tested. Eleven ROTC students were measured and filmed to obtain information on the kinematics of the lower limb and the dynamic forces exerted by their footwear on the ground while walking across a load plate. A machine was then designed which uses the coupler curve of a fourbar linkage to simulate the planar kinematics of the heel-strike and toe-off portions of walking. A standard-issue U. S. Army combat boot is attached to the fourbar linkage’s coupler link on a prosthetic foot such that the heel and sole are close to the moving centrode of the coupler. The ground plane is the fixed centrode. Thus their relative motion approximates pure rolling. The boot is “walked” against a force-plate which is loaded by an air cylinder. This force plate is pulled away during the walking “backstroke”. The dynamic forces of impact are measured by two force transducers. These measured forces simulate the vertical physiologic forces of walking and the kinematics provides realistic physiologic motions to the boot in a vertical plane.

Résumé :
In this research, the simplest kinematical models of triangular and rectangular plate finite elements using the absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF) are presented. The ANCF is the finite-element large-displacement-and-rotation approach, which uses the inertial-frame nodal position vectors and their derivatives (slopes) only, without employing any rotation parameters or their equivalent. As a consequence, the kinematics of the elements becomes linear, simplifying the inertia part of the equations of motion, which is also linear. In contrary, due to the need for employing the Green-Lagrange strain tensor, the elastic forces normally appear in a more complicated highly-nonlinear manner than in other large-rotation formulations. In this research, to reduce the computational burden, two new plate elements are proposed that are the simplest possible triangular and rectangular elements in the fully-parameterized ANCF: they employ transverse slopes only, without using longitudinal slopes.

Résumé :
This paper describes a new parallel kinematics mechanism for Scho¨nflies motion: the Lambda-Quadriglide. The structure of Lambda-Quadriglide provides four degrees of freedom (DOF) with three translations and one rotation around a horizontal axis. Four linear actuators with the same direction are used, which allows the workspace to be particularly long in this direction. The special feature of this mechanism is the lambda-configuration, based on two kinematic chains acting directly on the traveling plate, and two other kinematic chains acting on the first ones. This configuration allows a large rotational angular range for the mobile platform. The design concept of Lambda-Quadriglide is introduced and kinematics models are derived. Optimization of the mechanism parameters and the workspace of the optimized mechanism are also presented. This architecture allows a physical implementation with no collision problems between the arms. Finally, the Lambda-Quadriglide prototype is presented, together with experimentation results.

Résumé :
In the present study, an improved higher order theory in conjunction with finite element method (FEM) is presented and is applied to study the nonlinear vibration analysis of shear deformable functionally graded material (FGMs) plates. The present structural model kinematics assumes the cubically varying in-plane displacement over the entire thickness, while the transverse displacement varies quadratically to achieve the accountability of normal strain and its derivative in calculation of transverse shear strains. The theory also satisfies zero transverse strains conditions at the top and bottom faces of the plate, and the geometric nonlinearity is based on Green-Lagrange assumptions. All higher order terms appearing from nonlinear strain displacement relations are incorporated in the formulation. The material properties of the plates are assumed to vary smoothly and continuously throughout the thickness of the plate by a simple power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. A C0 continuous isoparametric nonlinear FEM with 13 degrees of freedom per node is proposed for the accomplishment of the improved elastic continuum. Numerical results with different system parameters and boundary conditions are accomplished, to show the importance and necessity of the higher order terms in the nonlinear formulations.

Résumé :
This work was dedicated to the experimental study of oscillating plate propulsors undergoing a combination of heave translation and pitch rotation. The oscillation kinematics are inspired by swimming mechanisms employed by fish and other marine animals. The primary focus was on the propulsive characteristics of such oscillating plates, which were studied by means of direct force measurements in the thrust-producing regime. Experiments were performed at constant Reynolds number and constant heave amplitude. By varying the Strouhal number, the depth of submergence and the chordwise flexibility of the plate, it was possible to investigate corresponding changes in the generated thrust and the hydromechanical efficiency. It was possible to establish a set of parameters, including the driving frequency of the system, the ratio of rigid to flexible segment length of the plate, and the range of Strouhal numbers that led to a peak efficiency of approximately 80%. The experiments involving plates with various ratios of rigid to flexible segment lengths showed that greater flexibility increased the propulsive efficiency and thrust compared to an identical motion of the purely rigid plate. By submerging the plate at different depths, it was observed that the proximity of the propulsor to the bottom of the channel led to overall increase in the thrust coefficient.

Résumé :
Abstract Nonlinear dynamics analyses are utilized to explore some of the basic dynamics and stability of human standing/balance. Phase plane portraits, plots of angular velocity versus angular displacement, present kinematics of the system in a compact form and provide insight into the dynamics of the system. Poincaré maps depict the transient and steady-state motion, and provide information about the stability of the system. Five young adults with no known gait pathologies participated in this study. A motion analysis system and force plates were utilized to capture the displacements of each body segment and joint, and the shifting of body weight between feet. Participants were required to stand comfortably with one foot on each force plate. Phase plane portraits were constructed for each joint in each of the sagittal, frontal and transverse planes. Poincaré maps were constructed by identifying a shift in weight onto one foot and sampling the corresponding joint velocities at those times.
