Résumé :
The colonization of land by plants shaped the terrestrial biosphere, the geosphere and global climates. The nature of morphological and molecular innovation driving land plant evolution has been an enigma for over 200 years. Recent phylogenetic and palaeobotanical advances jointly demonstrate that land plants evolved from freshwater algae and pinpoint key morphological innovations in plant evolution. In the haploid gametophyte phase of the plant life cycle, these include the innovation of mulitcellular forms with apical growth and multiple growth axes. In the diploid phase of the life cycle, multicellular axial sporophytes were an early innovation priming subsequent diversification of indeterminate branched forms with leaves and roots. Reverse and forward genetic approaches in newly emerging model systems are starting to identify the genetic basis of such innovations. The data place plant evo-devo research at the cusp of discovering the developmental and genetic changes driving the radiation of land plant body plans. This article is part of the themed issue ‘Evo-devo in the genomics era, and the origins of morphological diversity’.

Résumé :
Critical to sustainable agriculture, agrobiodiversity conservation provides immediate benefits and retains options for climate change adaptation. Reframing conservation as sustainable seed innovation allows for a dynamic view of farmer contributions. Sustainable seed innovation entails in situ conservation and the innovation of new plant varieties through traditional practices. Farmer interviews from regions throughout India form the empirical basis, while the concept intellectual property-broad, integrated with evolutionary economics, informs theory. Sustainable seed innovation within India receives support primarily from nonprofit groups favoring open-source systems. Conserving natural and financial capital motivated farmers to adopt sustainable techniques, but farmers believed attracting additional innovators required development of new markets. India’s Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act recognizes farmers as plant breeders but does not provide incentive to innovate sustainably. Moreover, agricultural policies reinforced by an underlying discourse where “progressive” farmers follow unsustainable practices incentivizes formal innovations, at the expense of sustainable innovations of farmers.

Résumé :
The article explains what an innovative activity in the economy involves and unfolds how the main concepts of theory of innovation are applied into the agricultural sector. It is pointed out that agrarian innovation is the final stage of fostering novelties in the agricultural sector (plant varieties, livestock breeds, cultivation technologies, etc), which has resulted in economic, social, ecological benefits and expanded reproduction. The study reveals that applying the main concepts of theory of innovation into agriculture has its specific features, namely: integrating innovative technologies into processes occurring in the nature; producing living organisms, which can be objectives and targets of innovation. The author identifies the factors hindering the introduction of innovations in the agricultural sector. It has been found that the lack of financial support and instability of legislation in the country are the root causes. A lack of necessary information and new ideas are yet other prime obstacles which prevent innovation processes in agricultural units. It is demonstrated that an innovative activity in proactive enterprises is a key factor for effective growth and a sustainable increase in agricultural production. It contributes to positive changes in production technology and production structure, a significant shift in motivation. The results indicate that some innovative products such as new varieties and hybrids of agricultural plants, new livestock and poultry breeds, machines and mechanisms, tools and equipment, modern means of production, etc. are of high demand on the market of innovative products. It is claimed that agricultural studies play an important role in meeting the demand since they accelerate the growth of this field by generating and introducing innovations. The author suggests the following steps for strengthening innovation policies in agricultural units: bringing in new competitive technologies in crop and livestock production; introducing high-yielding breeds and crop varieties / hybrids resistant to diseases and climate change effects; applying bio-technologies which increase production of new healthy products; improving means and methods of land cultivation; cleaning and storing raw materials; using energy-efficient technologies and ecological innovations, that make it possible to increase yields and productivity, minimize losses and sustain the environment.

Résumé :
The knowledge requirements and the need to generate new inventions in both products and processes of modern plant breeding are highly demanding and on the frontiers of science. There is no self-sufficient technological capacity in the public or private sector capable of completely dominating such undertakings. In this general framework, the processes of open innovation, both public/private, public/public and private/private, are key to success.Despite the opportunities generated by open innovation processes applied to modern plant bre-eding, an increase in the innovation rate is not detected, as measured by the average increase in crop productivity. One possible explanation for this fact is that the genetic basis on which mo-dern plant breeding is being supported has been significantly narrowed by a lack of utilization or underutilization of genetic resources.Intellectual property rights are part of the variables of this complex equation and their applica-tion leads to three hypotheses that were tested against four real cases of open innovation applied in modern plant breeding in Argentina. In no case it was observed that the suppression of intellectual property rights has been considered a tool to promote innovation (hypothesis #1). On the contrary, what was observed is that the innovation was oriented towards those products or processes capable of being managed in an innovative way by some current intellectual property system, although protection is limited by the speed of technological advance. An alternative solution (hypothesis #3), is that the legal fra-mework to promote development should be reformulated in an integral way to adapt it to the de-velopments of modern plant breeding under open innovation processes. The decision for one or the other alternative is critical since the innovation rate resulting from the crops will depend on it.

Résumé :
Introduction. The automotive industry traditionally belongs to the innovation-active subsectors, where a large number of product and process innovations are produced annually, many newest engineering solutions are put into practice. In scientific literature there are numerous studies of innovation and investment potential at the macro, meso and micro levels of its manifestation, but scientists have not yet paid attention to the innovation and investment potential of the automotive industry. The purpose of the paper is development and testing the methodological tools for integral assessment of innovation and investment potential of the automotive industry. Results. In the article the authors propose an integral index of innovation and investment potential of automotive enterprises and a scale of interpretation of the values of this indicator. The integral assessment of innovation and investment potential of the automotive industry of Ukraine in the period 2014-2018 is done, in particular such automakers as: PJSC “Zaporizhzhya automobile plant”, сorporation “Bogdan”, PrJSC “Eurocar”, PrJSC “AvtoKrAZ”, PrJSC “BAZ”, PrJSC “Chasivoyarsky buses”, PrJSC “Chernihiv automobile plant”, PJSC “Cherkasy bus”. It was revealed that currently the leader of innovation and investment development of the automotive industry of Ukraine is PrJSC “Eurocar”, which is characterized by a high level of innovation and investment potential. This situation is due to the traditionally effective partnership on the basis of franchising and car assembly activities of PrJSC “Eurocar” with leading foreign automakers such as Škoda Auto, Volkswagen AG, Hyundai Motor Company. Other domestic automakers are characterized by an average level of innovation and investment potential, except for PrJSC “BAZ”, which is currently characterized by a low level of innovation and investment potential. Conclusion. In the period 2014-2018, the stimulators of the innovation and investment potential of the automotive industry of Ukraine were indicators of the cost of implemented investment projects, capital efficiency, material efficiency and productivity. Instead, mainly the destructive influence on the integral index of innovation and investment potential of the automotive industry of Ukraine in 2014-2018 was carried out by indicators of management efficiency, introduction of innovations, profitability of activity.

Résumé :
An important challenge for livestock systems is the mitigation of environmental impacts while ensuring food security, and feed additives are considered as one of the most promising mitigation strategies. This study analyzed the innovation landscape of feed additives to reduce methane emissions in ruminants. The analysis is based on patent data to evaluate the development, scientific importance, and market-level impact of the innovations in this field. The results reveal that the EU is on the innovation frontier, with substantial and quality patent production. The innovation field is dominated by private players, characterized by high specificity in the R&D pipeline. Additives derived from plant or botanical extracts, together with 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP), represent the emerging innovations, indicating a clear orientation toward more sustainable livestock systems. Despite the regulatory and semantic limitations related to the use of patent databases, data reveal a growing innovation activity at global level, which could lead to macroeconomic benefits for the entire livestock sector.

Résumé :
Synopsis In the wild, particularly in rapidly changing conditions, being capable of solving new problems can increase an animal’s chances of survival and reproduction. In the current context of widespread habitat destruction and increasing urbanization, innovativeness might be a crucial trait. In the past few decades, birds have proven to be a model taxon for the study of innovation, thanks to the abundant literature on avian innovation reports. Innovation databases in birds have been successfully employed to assess associations between innovativeness and other traits such as invasion success, life history, generalism, and brain encephalization. In order to more directly assess the causes of variation in innovation, a complementary approach consists in measuring innovativeness in wild-caught animals using problem-solving tasks that mimic innovations in the field. This method can allow for finer scale evaluation of ecological and neural correlates of innovation. Here, I review some of the most important findings on the correlates of innovation, with a particular focus on neural ones. I conclude by discussing avenues for future research, which I suggest should focus on neurobiology.

Résumé :
A new innovation paradigm is needed to answer the societal, economic and environmental challenges the world and companies are facing. The EU funded Horizon 2020 SPIRE Project “Coordinating Optimisation of Complex Industrial Processes” (COCOP) is combining technological and social innovation within a steel company pilot case (Sidenor). The project aims at reducing raw materials consumption (and energy and emissions reduction as well) by plant-wide optimisation of production processes based on a software solution and at the same time changing social practices. Key for COCOP is a methodology integrating technological innovation within a social innovation process of co-creation and co-development by involving (potential) users of the future software system and relevant stakeholders right from the beginning; thereby improving effectiveness and impact of the innovations and the implementation process. This involvement is instructed and measured by social key performance indicators (social KPIs) and operationalised in surveys (questionnaire and interviews) with future users, engineers and external experts (from different industry sectors not involved in the project). The article presents the results of the starting point of COCOP illustrating the future user perspective of the pilot steel company (Sidenor) contrasted by the view of external experts – seriously taking into account the interfaces between technology, human and organisation.

Résumé :
Purpose In megaprojects, changes in scope and organization may occur continuously. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how actors in a project network make sense of a safety-related process innovation introduced during the design phase. Design/methodology/approach An inductive single case study of an ongoing nuclear power plant project in Europe was employed to elucidate sensemaking processes using a narrative approach. Findings The empirical analysis yielded nine distinct narratives regarding the innovation each advancing a different account of the rationale for implementing the new method, and the subjects, objects and implications of the change. The findings suggest that actors’ differing framings of innovation may increase ambiguity and equivocality. Originality/value These insights augment existing knowledge of innovation management and system safety in safety-critical megaprojects by revealing project actors’ discrepant sensemaking processes with regard to innovations. To successfully manage sensemaking and its consequences for innovation adoption, managers need to take account of any such discrepancies in sensemaking processes.

Résumé :
Biotechnology applied to Plant Agribusiness (BPA) has become increasingly familiar. However, innovation effort determinants account for a gap that has yet to be fully investigated. Therefore, was examined the influence of technological cooperation and knowledge flow in the innovation efforts of countries. In methodological terms, 20,149 patents from the BPA sector were collected from the Derwent Clarivate database from 1998 to 2019. Regarding the main findings, it is worth highlighting the occurrence of greater innovation efforts in developed countries. However, from 2015 onwards, an increase in priority technologies was identified in developing countries, which then overtook developed countries in 2019. Finally, has been proven that technological cooperation has a positive effect on innovation efforts and that there is a tendency to generate new technologies with less reference to existing technological knowledge, perhaps as an avant-garde attempt to seek a competitive advantage, prioritizing new knowledge and, at the same time, technological distinction.

Résumé :
There are two primary forms of plant propagation: sexual and asexual. In nature, propagation of plants most often involves sexual reproduction, and this form is still used in several species. Over the years, horticulturists have developed asexual propagation methods that use vegetative plant parts. Innovation in plant propagation has supported breeding programs and allowed the production of high-quality nursery plants with the same genetic characteristics of the mother plant, and free of diseases or pests. The purpose of this Special Issue, “Innovation in Propagation of Fruit, Vegetable and Ornamental Plants”, was to present state-of-the-art techniques recently developed by researchers worldwide. The Special Issue has brought together some of the latest research results of new techniques in plant propagation in nine original papers, which deal with a wide range of research activities.

Résumé :
The development of innovation in a particular area cannot be separated from the diffusion of innovation. This diffusion of innovation occurs because of the process of social interaction by related actors in the region. This is explained by Rogers (2003), that the diffusion of innovation is a process when innovation is communicated or mentioned through certain channels for a certain period of time to members of a social system, which then becomes part of the social system. With the diffusion of innovation, an area will experience changes in certain conditions due to the impact of emerging innovations, which will play a role in developing the character of the region. As happened in Jenggot village, the emergence or entry of new patterns influenced changes in the market in terms and the direction of development of the existing batik patterns in the village. Batik patterns that were originally patterned and impressed monotonously with plant and animal-based patterns are becoming more contemporary and fashionable. The diffusion of innovation helps business owners either directly or indirectly in promoting their batik products. Thus increasing the value of the batik product itself.
