Résumé :
Abstract: This article examines the impact of the School Achievement Indicators Program (SAIP) on the educational system. SAIP is a Canada-wide program involving the large-scale assessment of student achievement in mathematics, science, reading, and writing. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews conducted with the SAIP’s jurisdictional coordinators (n = 20) and from surveys sent to participating school boards across Canada (n = 147). SAIP’s impact is described using two dimensions: intrinsic versus extrinsic and positive versus negative. Results revealed that poor communication between the coordinators and various educational stakeholders plays an important role in the level of impact. Recommendations are made for learning evaluation programs.

Résumé :
Grain hardness is a major determinant of the classification and end-use of wheat. Two genes, Pina-D1 and Pinb-D1, have a major effect on this trait, so for wheat breeding programs it is important to identify the alleles of these genes present in elite germplasm. This study was conducted to identify the alleles present in southern Australian germplasm, and to determine if they affected quality characteristics other than grain hardness.Only 3 genotypes were identified. These were Pina-D1a/Pinb-D1a producing soft grain, Pina-D1a/Pinb-D1b producing moderately hard grain, and Pina-D1b/Pinb-D1a producing very hard grain. WW15 was the probable source of Pina-D1a/Pinb-D1b in most cultivars; however, Halberd represented another source. An important source of Pina-D1b/Pinb-D1a was the CIMMYT line Pavon, with sources from the old Australian cultivars Gabo and Falcon probably still present in modern germplasm. In an analysis of grain quality data from the Victorian Institute for Dryland Agriculture breeding program, the Pina-D1b/Pinb-D1a genotype had a significantly higher water absorption and significantly lower milling yield than the Pina-D1a/Pinb-D1b genotype, which indicates that these genes will impede the development of hard-grained cultivars that combine high water absorption and high milling yield.

Résumé :
Wheat is one of the most widely grown crops in the world. One of the traits that defines wheat quality is grain hardness, which is determined by puroindolines (PINA and PINB) proteins encoded with Pina-D1 and Pinb-D1 genes. In this study, the diversity of Pina-D1 and Pinb-D1 was evaluated in a collection of 271 Iranian common wheat (Triticum aestivum L. ssp. aestivum) landraces, whose kernels had previously been classified as hard or semi-hard based on PSI analysis. Three alleles previously described as associated with hard grain were detected in the collection: Pinb-D1b in 11 accessions, Pinb-d1ab in 175 accessions, and Pinb-d1p in 80 accessions. In addition, a novel allele tentatively named Pinb-d1ak was detected in Pinb-D1 and was characterized by a change at position 140 of the deduced protein (cysteine/tyrosine). On average, the accessions with this allele showed a lower PSI value than the accessions with other Pin allele. This means that this novel allele may be associated with harder grains than other Pin alleles and could be used by breeding programs targeting different grain hardness levels. This study highlights the importance of conserving and characterizing wheat genetic resources that could be used as sources of genetic variability in breeding programs.

Résumé :
Kernel hardness, one of the most important factors in determining the end-use suitability of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), is largely influenced by puroindoline proteins a (PINA) and b (PINB). Soft texture is wildtype (Pina-D1a/Pinb-D1a) with hard texture being determined by either Pina-D1 gene deletion or point mutations in Pinb-D1a. The objectives of this study were to determine kernel hardness indices (HI) and Pina-D1/Pinb-D1 allelic diversity in a diverse set of 81 Canadian (representing eight wheat classes) and 49 US hard spring wheat varieties. Varieties were grouped into two experimental sets grown in replicated trials in 2004–2006 at Saskatoon, SK. Variation existed among varieties with HI means ranging from 21.7 (CDC Zorba) to 72.7 (AC Morse) in exp. 1 and from 25.0 (HY320) to 66.1 (Norlander) in exp. 2. Only AC Andrew, CDC Zorba, and Red Fife were soft kernel textured and carried the wildtype Pina-D1a/Pinb-D1a alleles. The majority of Canadian varieties were Pina-D1a/Pinb-D1b (69%), while a greater frequency of US varieties was Pina-D1b/Pinb-D1a (55%). Only four varieties, all from Quebec-based breeding programs, carried the Pinb-D1c allele. On average, varieties with the Pina-D1b allele had significantly harder kernels than those carrying the Pinb-D1b mutation. Durum wheat (T. turgidum L. var durum) varieties, included as hard-kernelled controls, possessed significantly harder kernels (average HI = 71.2) than spring wheat varieties with Pina-D1b (65.3). Varieties carrying Pina-D1b (null PINA) were harder than those carrying hardness mutations at the Pinb-D1 locus, but considerable overlap in hardness was evident among genotypic classes. This work represents the first extensive Pin genotyping combined with HI phenotyping survey of Canadian wheat varieties, which is expected to aid breeders in understanding how Pina-D1/Pinb-D1 allele composition is currently associated with kernel hardness across Canadian wheat classes. Key words: Triticum aestivum, kernel hardness, puroindolines

Résumé :
The wide array of therapeutic responses to substance use/abuse suggests that there is not one best approach to solve the problems of any one adolescent or young adult. Indeed, most young people require a variety of therapeutic interventions, which may include inpatient treatment, ambulatory therapeutic groups, and individual counseling, as well as self-help groups. In choosing a therapeutic program, the physician must be circumspect when interpreting the reported success or "cure" rates of any of these modalities. Such citations often are misleading because frequently they fail to reflect accurately the therapeutic influence of several important patient population variables that distinguish the programs. For example, an outpatient program may report better "cure" rates than an inpatient program because the ambulatory program may have enrolled clients who have more limited substance use patterns and who are more committed to abstinence. Furthermore, there is no standard methodology for reporting "rates of success." Some programs simply report a compliance rate for clients who attend meetings or scheduled therapeutic sessions, some report the numbers of clients who complete the program without any reference to recidivism, and some report the numbers of clients who are "drug-free" after 1 year. Given these caveats, the experience of most clinicians suggests that many adolescents who experiment with the traditional "gateway" drugs (eg, tobacco, alcohol, marijuana) respond well to outpatient group and individual therapy, those adolescents committed to a substance use/abuse pattern respond best to inpatient or residential programs, and adolescents who have a psychiatric/behavioral problem complicated by substance use/abuse require formal psychiatric treatment. Single-drug programs such as methadone maintenance or Alcoholics Anonymous have limited applicability for treatment of most adolescents who suffer from substance abuse.

Résumé :
Lettuce is the main leafy vegetable, presenting the highest consumption and economic importance in the world. In the recent decades, concerns about vitamin A deficiency have led Brazilian researchers to develop cultivars with higher levels of carotenoids provitamin A. Therefore the experiment aimed to verify the genetic dissimilarity of biofortified lettuce genotypes, investigating the correlation between agronomic characteristics and the potential for use to increase the carotenoid content in future breeding programs. Ninety one genotypes were evaluated, with 86 lettuce strains from hybridization between cultivars Pira 72 versus Uberlândia 10000 (rich in carotenoids) followed by three successive self-fertilizations and 5 commercial cultivars (Grand Rapids; UFU MC BIOFORT1; Pira 72; Uberlândia 10000 and Robusta).During the course of the trial, were evaluated characteristics as chlorophyll content of the leaves, plant diameter, stem diameter and the number of leaves per plant were counted. Genetic diversity was represented by a dendrogram that was obtained using the hierarchical method of UPGMA and the optimization method of Tocher. There is genetic divergence between the lettuce genotypes analyzed, and the carotenoid content character contributed most significantly to the divergence between the evaluated genotypes. The UFU215#12 genotypes; UFU215#14; UFU215#2; UFU 215#1; UFU215#4; UFU199#3 and UFU199#2 have good agronomic characteristics and high levels of carotenoids, being promising to continue the biofortified lettuce breeding program, aiming to obtain new cultivars rich in carotenoids pro vitamin A.

Résumé :
Abstract The U.S.–Taiwan Partnership for International Research and Education (PIRE) “Building Extreme Weather Resiliency through Improved Weather and Climate Prediction and Emergency Response Strategies” was an NSF-funded grant between universities and institutions in the United States and Taiwan that intended to understand 1) weather forecast uncertainty during extreme precipitation events and 2) how emergency managers use such information to make decisions. In this reflective paper, graduate students from the project’s working groups, including climate, ensemble, microphysics, and decision science, share their experiences of being involved in this ambitious program. A notable strength of this PIRE was its opportunities for international collaboration and related cultural experiences; however, despite direct student involvement in PIRE, student experiences varied considerably (e.g., research experiences, cultural exposure). Recommendations for improvement are informed predominantly by U.S.-based graduate student experiences and are discussed with the intention of bolstering future interdisciplinary research for students and investigators. To this end, projects of this scale and scope could benefit from more frequent communication among leadership and research groups, as well as explicitly outlining and prioritizing interactions between groups to focus and strengthen collaboration toward the completion of interdisciplinary research goals.

Background. Studies have shown the great importance of early mathematical development as a predictor of subsequent success, which poses the question of how to organize preschool mathematical education with a view to the children’s age characteristics, including their cognitive development. In other words, mathematical concepts and actions should be formed with the help of teaching resources appropriate to the child’s development. Objective. To determine the e" ectiveness of three teaching resources (examples, models, and symbols) in formation of the concept of magnitude in older preschoolers (ages 6–7) with di" erent levels of executive function. Design. Four training programs (with 15 twenty-minute lessons each) were developed and conducted in a formative experiment for older preschoolers with di" erent levels of development of executive functions. ! e lessons addressed the concept of magnitude (length, area, volume), using di" erent types of teaching resources: exemplars (in traditional and game variants), models, and symbols. ! e total sample of 116 subjects (44% boys) was divided into 4 groups for each of the programs, plus a control group in which no sessions were conducted. ! e groups were equalized according to the initial level of development of concepts of magnitude and the level of development of executive functions. Results. ! ere was a statistically signi# cant increase in the quality of mastery of the concept of magnitude in three experimental groups (“symbolic,” “traditional,” and “traditional with imaginary characters”) compared with the control group. ! e formative e" ect of the “model-building” program showed no signi# cant di" erences from the e" ect of the child’s natural development (the control group). We also showed that children with a low level of regulation learned mathematical concepts more e" ectively with the “symbolic” program; children with a medium level of regulation with the “symbolic” and any variant of the “traditional” program; and children with a high level of regulation with the “symbolic” and “model-building” programs. Conclusion. ! e # ndings underline the importance of both the type of teaching resources used and the level of development of voluntary regulation, when teaching mathematics to preschoolers.

Macanputih is a village located in Kabat Subdistrict, Banyuwangi Regency, where most of its citizens work in the agricultural sector. This village is a village built by the Accounting Study Program of Airlangga University from October 2018. The problem that occurred in this village is the lack of public awareness in cultivating local potential in the village. After the first volume of community service was carried out, the other problems that arose were MSMEs and Farmers' Groups who had limitations in enlarging capital and licensing PIRTs on their products, even though the products were already well known and competitive. Seeing this problem, the Accounting Study Program of Airlangga University held a Accounting Village program, which is a sustainable community service to develop the potential possessed by Macanputih village, activities carried out in stages, ranging from training to the utilization of local potential, to economic development. Through this activity, it is expected that residents in Macanputih Village can work together with related parties in developing their villages. Another expected output is the formation of cooperatives to help with capital problems faced.

In today's global era, food safety and health is becoming more complex because food safety is multi-sectoral and multidisciplinary. As we all know, there is no doubt that quality assurance of food safety throughout the food chain is a must without ignoring the fact that more than 200 diseases are spread through daily food. This is the main reason for the government to create a Home Industry Food Production Certification (SPP-IRT) as a guarantee of health quality and food safety from MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) households. However, the lack of home industry products that have SPP-IRT is a challenge and a problem for the government, society, and MSMEs themselves. Through this mentoring program and by using community empowerment methods, it is hoped that it can increase knowledge related to SPP-IRT to the wider community, especially home industry activists. The result of this community empowerment is the widespread dissemination of information regarding Home Industry Food Production Certification and the increase in SPP-IRT registrants after this activity takes place. Of course, the success of this activity was accompanied by support from the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) and Padjadjaran University. The hope is that this program can solve the problem of the lack of MSME participation related to the registration of SPP-IRT for their products.

Résumé :
Glutenin genes were known to influence maximum dough resistance (Rmax), dough extensibility (extensibility), and dough development time, whereas puroindoline genes were known to influence grain hardness, flour water absorption (water absorption), and milling yield. These are important determinants of grain quality of wheat in Australia. This study was conducted to investigate the combined effect of these genes on Rmax, extensibility, dough development time, water absorption, and milling yield in a large dataset assembled from the breeding programs based at Horsham, Victoria; Roseworthy, South Australia; and Wagga Wagga, New South Wales; for at least 10 seasons. The effect of the glutenin genes on Rmax, extensibility, and dough development time was confirmed, as was the effect of the puroindoline genes on water absorption and milling yield. In addition, puroindoline genes were shown to significantly affect extensibility and dough development time. The Pina-D1a/Pinb-D1b genotype increased extensibility, dough development time, and milling yield relative to the Pina-D1b/Pinb-D1a genotype. Both of these genotypes are present in cultivars classified as hard-grained in southern Australia. Therefore, the allelic composition of both glutenin and puroindoline genes is required to predict the grain quality of hard wheat in southern Australian breeding programs. The glutenin and puroindoline genes in combination accounted for more than 50% of the genotypic variance for these traits, except for milling yield, but a substantial proportion of the genotypic variation could not be attributed to these genes, indicating that other genes affecting the traits were present in the populations of these wheat-breeding programs.

Résumé :
Based on numerous examples from this country and abroad, we now have a reasonable idea of how we can reduce substantially the incidence of low-weight births, child abuse, adolescent pregnancy, school failure, and school dropout. The most effective long-term strategy appears to be the development of a comprehensive, coordinated, community-wide approach focused on preventing low- and medium-risk families from becoming high-risk as well as providing intensive services to those who already have reached a high-risk status. The best results can be obtained when all levels of government and the private sector work together. In this partnership, the best outcomes appear to result when the state and federal governments, private corporations, or both provide technical assistance, additional funding as needed, and help in setting program standards, and when the community maintains local control over establishing priorities and implementation strategies. However, to reach these goals and to maintain program support over the long time periods needed to show positive results (4 to 8 years), it is necessary to become skilled in social marketing techniques to turn program need into demand and to develop a strong local and statewide advocacy group to facilitate passage of needed legislation and prevent funding cutbacks. Pediatricians can modify their practices to make them more supportive to families and can work with other community leaders to bring about the changes in attitudes and about the changes in attitudes and funding priorities at the state and community levels that will be necessary to develop more effective preventive programs.

Résumé :
PurposeTransnational learning has become a mainstream issue in recent years due to the rise of global education. There are many kinds of overseas learning, including degree-seeking, joint/double degree, student exchange, internship, service learning and so on. The scope of learning may involve research, teaching/learning and community service. The purpose of the case study is to investigate how the Taiwanese students participating in an international internship project of the US–Taiwan Partnerships for International Research and Education (PIRE) acquire professional knowledge and soft skills, including cross-cultural awareness, interdisciplinary communication, skill development and social networking. It also explores how a joint research project contributes into a collaborative educational program.Design/methodology/approachTo better understand participants' experiences in the PRIE, this study held three focus groups and seven in-depth interviews on the students, faculty members and project managers for data collection.FindingsThree major findings are shown in the study. First, participants agreed that the overall learning experiences in knowledge acquisition or skill development have been positive. Second, participants obviously expressed their greater interests in intercultural interaction with the locals, which did not happen quite often during the internship. Third, the extent of interest in applying for the PIRE deg ree program after the internship program is escalating year by year.Research limitations/implicationsMore investigation into participants’ social and cultural engagement in similar project will be needed for future research.Practical implicationsThe results will be implicated into other cross-border education project evaluation.Originality/valueThis study manages to investigate the cross-border research initiative from different participants' perspectives and received comprehensive feedbacks.

Résumé :
Abstract A once-weekly optimized dosing regimen of erlotinib (ERL) in the polyposis in rat colon (Pirc) model [1] was a reliable predictor of antitumor efficacy in familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) patients [2]. Pirc rats are increasingly used as a translational tool for FAP studies. Based on transcriptomic data from FAP patients receiving ERL plus sulindac (SUL) vs. placebo [3], we determined the timing of changes in interferon-γ signaling in Pirc adenomas, while performing additional dose titration. In rats that were given ERL administered at 5 mg per kilogram of body weight through oral gavage (two times a week) and that received a diet containing 125 parts per million of SUL, a regimen referred to as SUL125+ERL5x2, significant suppression of tumor growth was observed. This combination represented half of the standard of care SUL dose and about one-quarter of the ERL dose in FAP patients. In adenomas collected after one year of treatment from SUL125+ERL5x2 treated rats, the expression of genes related to the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I (β2m, Cnx, Psmb8 and Tap1) and MHC class II (RT1-A2, Cd74, RT-1Bb, Cd74, and Ciita) was increased, compared to vehicle controls, excluding a subset of adenomas that remained resistant. Through the use of multiplex mass cytometry (CyTOF), an increase in tumor-infiltrating CD4+ T cells was observed in adenomas from the SUL125+ERL5x2 treatment group. Administration of single or combined agents increased CD68+ cells and reduced the presence of Foxp3+ and Arg1+ cells in Pirc adenomas. The natural history of adenomatous colon polyps indicated an increase in MHC gene expression as tumors increased in size; however, this trend reversed markedly in fully occluding lesions. Additionally, expression of MHC-related factors increased in Pirc colon adenoma and murine colon carcinoma cells treated with ERL±SUL, resulting in enhanced CD8+ T-cell activation and IL-2 secretion. In conclusion, treatment with intermittent low doses of ERL±SUL increased MHC gene expression and induced changes in the immune cell component in the tumor microenvironment of Pirc rat adenomas. A subset of non-responsive adenomas could benefit from additional immunopreventive approaches, with implications for possible clinical applications in both hereditary and sporadic colorectal cancer.

The aim of the study was to verify the association of clinical relapses and brain activity with disability progression in relapsing/remitting multiple sclerosis patients receiving disease-modifying treatments in Poland. Disability progression was defined as relapse-associated worsening (RAW), progression independent of relapse activity (PIRA), and progression independent of relapses and brain MRI Activity (PIRMA). Data from the Therapeutic Program Monitoring System were analyzed. Three panels of patients were identified: R0, no relapse during treatment, and R1 and R2 with the occurrence of relapse during the first and the second year of treatment, respectively. In the R0 panel, we detected 4.6% PIRA patients at 24 months (p < 0.001, 5.0% at 36 months, 5.6% at 48 months, 6.1% at 60 months). When restricting this panel to patients without brain MRI activity, we detected 3.0% PIRMA patients at 12 months, 4.5% at 24 months, and varying from 5.3% to 6.2% between 36 and 60 months of treatment, respectively. In the R1 panel, RAW was detected in 15.6% patients at 12 months and, in the absence of further relapses, 9.7% at 24 months and 6.8% at 36 months of treatment. The R2 group was associated with RAW significantly more frequently at 24 months compared to the R1 at 12 months (20.7%; p < 0.05), but without a statistical difference later on. In our work, we confirmed that disability progression was independent of relapses and brain MRI activity.

Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment Inc. for PALSave, an affordable education initiative that will combat rising textbook costs and their detrimental effects on student success and retention. The average cost of textbooks annually is about $1,300. Research from The Student Public Interest Research Groups and U.S. PIRG Education Fund shows that some students have to borrow more to pay for college, are likely not to buy required materials at some point, and might even drop a class because of text prices. PALNI offers the PALSave program in response to this need and to help provide a proactive solution to textbook affordability. The grant will enable PALNI to support course transformations using course materials which are free to students, focusing on Open Educational Resources worldwide.

Case studies of three music education spaces will present acoustical measurement data with architectural features of the rooms compared to criteria from Sabine (1964), Pirn (1978), Gade (1988), Wenger (2008), and Tsaih (2011) among others to assess the sound qualities of the spaces. Among other qualities, reverberation time, room volume, hearing each other, and speech intelligibility are evaluated. Data are also compered to the Norwegian Standard NS 8178-2014. The case studies show how these criteria can be achieved given very different architectural systems employed in the rooms and describe the limits of where the qualities cannot be achieved due to the limits of program, budget, site, or space. Efforts are made to make each surface in the rooms acoustically productive in an optimized design to the extent practicable.

Résumé :
The Sagayen National High School (SNHS) in Asuncion, Davao del Norte, has not been exempted from the enduring struggle caused by the perennial problem in reading. The result of the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (PIRI) conducted to its Grade 7 students has provided a backdrop of the reality that besets our students in the secondary schools. The College of Teacher Education and Technology, through the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) Department, answers the challenge via the “Summer Big Brother/Sister: Learning is Fun Project”, a project in the Integrated Reading Enhancement Approach to Developing Readers (i-READR) Program: A Community Extension Program to a Participatory Action Research. This was designed to eventually transform frustration-level readers into “grade-level” readers, implemented in three years. Through Participatory Action Research (PAR), the Project provides for these identified “frustration-level” readers to develop the necessary skills not just to “make sense” of the written word but, more importantly, overcome the invisible yet more serious consequences of their condition. This is in consonance with PAR, which, according to McTaggart (1997), encourages capacity development and capacity building of all who participate. Findings reveal that struggling readers have more serious social problems that are caused by their inability to read. Enhancements in the existing reading program are also necessary to cater to the growing reading-related needs of the learners.

Padelegan village is a village that has a variety of processed seafood. Padelegan village has several MSMEs managed by the des aitu community itself. MSME products produced are in the form of processed marine products. Such as anchovy krispi, crab crackers, rengginang lorjuk, and others. The problem experienced by MSMEs in Padelegan Village is that they do not have a PIRT permit which has an impact on product distribution. The solution to this problem is the existence of Pirt permits which will have an impact on product distribution because consumer confidence increases. Community service activities through the Independent Community Service grant program aim to assist MSME actors in applying for Pirt permits. The method of community service consists of several stages, namely preparation, discussion, implementation and assistance, monitoring and evaluation. The method used in this service is to provide assistance in the management of household industrial production certificate (PIRT). The results of this service activity are in the form of Pirt permits owned by partners

As part of Pediatrics in Review's ongoing focus on quality improvement, we present for the use of our readers this self-assessment exercise taken from the American Academy of Pediatrics' Ambulatory Care Quality Improvement Program (ACQIP). ACQIP is an educational program for pediatricians that embodies the concept of continuous quality improvement. It has been implemented successfully in physicians' offices, health maintenance organizations, and hospitals. Currently, more than 2000 physicians worldwide are enrolled in ACQIP. The program is designed to help pediatricians evaluate their practices by comparing themselves with other physicians in similar practices and communities. Pediatricians in groups can use ACQIP to analyze practice variations within the group. Three aspects of care are addressed: • Practice management • Delivery of preventive care • Patient satisfaction Each year, a theme is selected. In 1992-1993, the first year, the theme was immunizations. The 1993-1994 program focused on telephone management, developmental assessment, and management of asthma. ACQIP is being used by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) as a vehicle to disseminate and implement its new practice parameters on asthma, neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, otitis media, gastroenteritis, head trauma, febrile seizures, and urinary tract infections. This year's exercises (September 1994 to August 1995) will be on otitis media and hyperbilirubinemia and will be based on the parameters.

Résumé :
OBJECTIVES/SPECIFIC AIMS: The purposes of this study are to examine the relationships among sleep characteristics (duration, efficiency), stress biomarkers, and child behavior problems among toddlers living in socioeconomically disadvantaged homes and how these characteristics change over time from age of 12 months to 24 months. Aim 1: examine changes in subjective and objective sleep characteristics from 12 to 24 months of age. Aim 2: examine changes in stress biomarkers from 12 to 24 months of age. Aim 3: examine the cross sectional and longitudinal relationships between sleep characteristics and stress response. Aim 4: examine the cross sectional and longitudinal relationships between sleep characteristics and toddlers’ child behavior problems. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: In this cross-sectional study we are recruiting parents with healthy toddlers from early head start programs and a community clinic to prospectively examine the relationships among sleep characteristics, stress biomarkers, and children’s health. Data on sleep characteristics will include subjective and objective measures of sleep duration and efficiency and parental interactive bedtime behaviors to assist their toddlers’ sleep initiation. Multisystemic biomarkers of stress including cortisol, CRP, IL-6, and BMI, will be measured individually. The associations between sleep characteristics and the biomarkers, considered as a latent variable of the stress response, will be explored. Health measures will include secretory IgA and parent-reported behavioral problems. Generalized linear models will be used in the data analysis. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: To date we have obtained objective (9 days/nights of actigraphy) measures of 33 toddlers’ sleep and subjective measures of parenting interactive behaviors. Using the Parental Interactive Bedtime Behavior (PIBB) Survey and subscales [active physical comforting, encourage autonomy, settle by movement, passive physical comforting (PPC), social comforting], we are currently reporting on the associations between PIBB and toddler’s sleep characteristics. The sample included 33 toddlers (mean age=1.33 years, SD=0.54). The toddlers’ sleep duration averaged 8.22 hours (SD=0.86). There were statistically significant moderate associations between sleep duration and parents’ PPC (r=−0.41, p=0.02). Intra-individual variability in the amount of wake after sleep onset was also significantly associated with total PIBB and PPC (r=0.37, p=0.05; r=0.52, p=0.002, respectively). Intra-individual variability in the amount of sleep fragmentation within toddlers was significantly associated with total PIBB (r=0.36, p=0.05). DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT: Although active physical comforting (eg, rocking to sleep, patting or rubbing child’s back) is most commonly associated with sleep patterns in infancy and toddlerhood among samples of higher socio-economic status, findings from this study suggest a stronger association between PPC (eg, presence of the parent in the room to fall asleep) and less sleep duration and more individual variability in night wakings. The biomarker data are currently being analyzed and results will be presented within the year. Taken together, these preliminary results and pending results will inform future intervention development that may address the role of parenting behavior in promoting health sleep early in life.

Résumé :
This study aimed to examine the effects of implementing a learning model for manufacturing engineering drawing on students’ learning achievement in Vocational High School (VHS) in Sleman, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This study employed the quantitative descriptive method. The population in this study was all students of class XII of the mechanical engineering program at some VHSs. Using proportionate stratified random sampling, 142 out of 240 students from five VHSs were selected as the research participants. The results of this study show that the five VHSs implemented different learning models, namely project-based learning and discovery learning models. The percentage of Project-based Learning Model implementation in state vocational high schools SMKN 1 Sayegan and SMKN 2 Depok is 79%. Meanwhile, the percentage of discovery learning implementation in SMK Muhammadiyah Prambanan, SMK Nasional Berbah, and SMK Piri Sleman is 72%. Therefore, based on the student learning achievement, project-based learning is better than discovery learning.

Résumé :
Background. People with alcohol-addicted parents are at risk of psychoactive addictions, co-dependency, and suicidal behavior. Most studies of these people are aimed at confirming the inevitability of the impact of negative childhood experiences on their lives, and thus do not seek to identify resource factors which would allow them to overcome the negative emotions they experienced. Objective. The purpose of this study was to create a model of resource factors which would allow people with alcohol-addicted parents to overcome the negative emotions they experienced. Design. The participants were 58 healthy individuals (17 men and 41 women; M=25.2; SD=4.4) whose parents were alcohol addicts (they were participants in the 12-step recovery program "Adult Children of Alcoholics"), and 50 healthy individuals (15 men and 35 women, M=24.2; SD=3.7) whose parents were not alcohol addicts. The participants completed the questionnaires "Interpersonal Guilt," "Family Emotional Communication," and "Coping Strategies," and were interviewed on the resource factors which allowed them to overcome negative emotions. We used the content analysis of the interviews and latent variable modeling to analyze the questionnaires. Results. The model of resource factors (CFI=0.895, RMSEA=0.064) showed that the rules set by the parental dysfunctional family (the taboo on the expressing emotions, and external well-being) were associated with being unable to recognize current negative emotions and with avoiding problems. The ability to recognize negative emotions was connected with the participant’s willingness to accept responsibility for his/her life. The resource factors which allowed these subjects to overcome their negative emotions included: communication with relatives and friends; keeping a diary of emotions; and participating in recovery programs. Conclusion. Our model of resource factors explains the mechanism connecting dysfunctional family rules with the resource factors and negative emotions experienced by people with alcohol-addicted parents.

Résumé :
Last month's issue of Pediatrics in Review contains the questions asked of participants in the Ambulatory Care Quality Improvement Program (ACQIP) exercise on the management of acute exacerbations of asthma in children. The answers of those who completed that exercise, which was part of the 1993-1994 program, are summarized in this article. In addition, pointers for clinicians are presented as well as practical "pearls of wisdom" from subscribers. Readers who wish to evaluate their own practices may use this exercise and should consider enrollment in the ongoing ACQIP program. Further information may be obtained through the Division of Quality Care of the American Academy of Pediatrics. [See table in the PDF file] Quality Pointers for the Office Management of Acute Exacerbations of Asthma in Children TREATMENT Goals of Treatment: General treatment goals include helping patients to maintain "normal" pulmonary function rates, maintain normal activity levels, prevent chronic and troublesome symptoms (eg, nocturnal coughing or dyspnea), prevent recurrent exacerbations of asthma, and avoid adverse effects from asthma medications. The principal goal of management for the acute exacerbation is the recognition of early indicators, such as a worsening peak expiratory flow rate or forced expiratory volume over 1 second or an increase in symptoms, and early treatment to reverse these symptoms.

Résumé :
Onion is a crop of significant socioeconomic importance to Brazil. Onion germplasm with adaptation to tropical and sub-tropical conditions has played an important role in the development of this crop in the country. In this context, we studied the genetic diversity in a germplasm collection potentially useful for the development of cultivars for tropical and subtropical regions. The genetic variability of 21 accessions/cultivars that have been used as germplasm and/or were developed by onion breeding programs in Brazil was evaluated via RAPD markers. The following accessions were included in the study :'Red Creole', 'Roxa IPA-3', 'Valenciana 14', 'Beta Cristal', 'Diamante', 'Composto IPA-6', 'Aurora', 'Bojuda Rio Grande', 'Alfa Tropical', 'Pêra IPA-4', 'Primavera', 'Belém IPA-9', 'Crioula Alto Vale', 'Conquista', 'Pira-Ouro', 'Vale-Ouro IPA-11', 'Franciscana IPA-10', 'Serrana', 'CNPH 6400', 'Petroline', and 'Baia Periforme'. From the 520 primers used in the initial screening only 38 displayed stable polymorphisms. They produced 624 amplicons, of which 522 (83.7%) were monomorphic and 102 (16.3%) were polymorphic. An average similarity coefficient of 0.72 was calculated among accessions based upon this subgroup of polymorphic amplicons. This allowed the discrimination of this germplasm collection into six groups with only one of them comprising more than one accession. The main group was formed by 16 accessions ('Diamante', 'Composto IPA-6', 'Aurora', 'Bojuda Rio Grande', 'Conquista', 'Pira-Ouro', 'Serrana', 'Vale-Ouro IPA-11', 'Baia Periforme', 'Primavera', 'Franciscana IPA-10', 'Belém IPA-9', 'Crioula Alto Vale', 'Petroline', 'Pêra IPA-4' and 'Alfa Tropical'), for which the genetic origin (with few exceptions) can be traced back to the variety 'Baia Periforme'. The populations 'Red Creole', 'Roxa IPA-3', 'Beta Cristal', 'CNPH 6400', and 'Valenciana 14' comprised a set of five isolated groups, showing genetic divergence among them and in relation to main 'Baia Periforme' group. This germplasm displayed a relatively low genetic diversity, with the predominance of materials originated from the base population 'Baia Periforme'. There are, however, some accessions, which can add genetic diversity to this germplasm and they can be exploited by onion breeding programs aiming to develop cultivars for tropical regions of the world.
